BEST MATE’S LIFE

MALCOLM LYALL is imploring
people to skill up on first aid after
he had to use his training to save
his father-in-law.
It was Lyall’s 67th birthday on
Saturday, May 11. To celebrate, he
held a dinner with close friends
and family at his Prebbleton
home.
Lyall, who is Selwyn’s deputy
mayor, was in the kitchen carving
meat when he heard his 92-yearold
father-in-law Eddie Willett
coughing.
Eddie was choking on his dinner.
Lyall said it wasn’t unusual
for Eddie to have the odd minor
choking incident, but he was always
able to pull himself out of it.
But then Lyall’s wife Nicola
called out to Lyall and said her
dad was not coming right.
“By the time I turned around,
his lips were blue,” Lyall said.
Lyall rushed over to Eddie
and gave him a hard slap on the
back, hoping that would clear the
blockage. It did not work.

A COMMUNITY advocacy
group is calling for more safety
measures at intersections.
Lincoln Voice has launched
a petition to get flashing stop
signs installed at dangerous
intersections.
In the five years to 2023,
10 people died and 78 were
seriously injured due to drivers
failing to stop or give way at
intersections in the district,
New Zealand Transport Agency
Waka Kotahi data shows.
Said Lincoln Voice
spokesperson Denise Carrick:
“We propose the installation
of flashing stop signs at all
major junctions. These signs
are proven to draw drivers’
attention more effectively than
standard stop signs, particularly
at night or during adverse
weather conditions.”
In recent years, Lincoln Voice
has focused on fighting the
1710-home Lincoln South subdivision,
which it officially gave
up earlier this year. It has now
turned its focus to other issues
in the community.
In 2016, former Selwyn police
sergeant Dan Harker helped
get the flashing warning signs
installed on four intersections,
after being prompted by fatal
crashes he had attended.
Lincoln Voice launched the
petition for road safety week last
Monday. It also teamed up with
the Selwyn Community Patrol
and the Lincoln Volunteer Fire
Brigade to make a video.

Lincoln Voice also wanted
measures to reduce speed

“Implementing speed bumps
or rumble strips before the stop
signs can help reduce vehicle
speed, ensuring drivers approach
these intersections with
caution,” said Carrick.
The petition also advocates
for regular trimming of trees,
hedges and bushes to improve
visibility and safety.
“The council has a fundamental
obligation to ensure the
safety of its residents and road
users. Unfortunately, the current
state of the roads between
Lincoln and Christchurch does
not meet this obligation,” Carrick
said.
The petition has been sent to
the council.
Said a council spokesperson:
“We have received the petition
from Lincoln Voice and would
like some time now to review
this before we respond.”
The petition had 455
signatures as of 3pm Monday.

The two people sitting either
side of Eddie held him up while
Lyall performed lifesaving abdominal
thrusts.
“I applied the Heimlich
manoeuvre multiple times over
a few minutes and managed to
clear the blockage and get some
air flow.”
Lyall said he did not think
when it happened – he just
kicked into gear.
“When dear old dad choked
I clicked straight into first aid
mode. I was saying: ‘Come on
Eddie, come on’.”
After clearing Eddie’s airway,
they carried him to the kitchen
to put him into the recovery
position.
Nicola and another friend had
already called 111, one using a
cellphone and the other on the
landline.
About 30 seconds before
St John and a fire crew from
Wigram arrived, two volunteer
firefighters from Cromwell,
who had been visiting family in
Prebbleton, came through the
back door to help.
“They (paramedics) in and
found he had gone into cardiac
arrest. On my kitchen floor, they
cut his clothes off and did what
they had to do.”
The paramedics cleared everyone
from the kitchen so they
could work on Eddie.
“As I got up to leave, they
were performing CPR on him,”
said Lyall.
He and the others waited
nervously as the minutes ticked by.
“It was all a jumble; I sat down
on the couch and took a few
deep breaths because I was
exhausted.
“I heard one of them say
‘We’ve got a pulse’ and that’s
when a sigh of relief went

Christchurch Hospital, with
daughter Nicola accompanying
him in the ambulance.
Lyall and his other guests
stayed at the house, had dessert
and some tea and chatted about
what had unfolded, while Nicola

Lyall said it took a while for the
adrenaline to subside.
Later that night, he joined
Nicola at the hospital.
Eddie is now recovering
in Burwood Hospital and
remembers little from the
incident.

In response, NZ Police, NZTA and
partners are coming together this
June to collectively target people
in Canterbury who continue to

People will be reminded of the
consequences through education
and advertising, backed up on the
ground by Police vehicle checks,
enforcement and driver education.
Mayor Sam Broughton says, it’s
good to see our community take
a responsible approach to sober
driving.
“Together, we are shifting beliefs
and behaviours about drink
driving. This is being led by our
young people and a generational
change in attitudes to drunk
drivers’.
“Our Selwyn community is well
aware of the expectation to
arrange a safe ride home. This
June, Selwyn District Council is
joining forces with our road safety
partners to focus on the risk
drunk drivers place on all other
transport users.”

“I remember going over for
dinner then nothing after that
until I was in the ambulance,”
said Eddie.
“I’m just thankful to be here.”
Lyall, who lost his father at 19,
said he treats Eddie like his
dad.
“He’s my best mate,” Lyall said.
Eddie lives by himself just
around the corner from the
Lyalls, after moving north from
Oamaru. Lyall visits him every
day for a cup of tea and sometimes
a whisky.
“I take him to the pub and he
has a couple of pints every Friday
night and if he doesn’t get to go
the pub he gets very sad-faced,”
Lyall joked.
Lyall has had regular first aid
training for 50 years. Now he
is encouraging others to do a
course.
“I’ve spent 50 years as an electrician
and for the first 15 years

aid because you never know, it
might be your relative, it might

Destructive blaze
caused by ashes

ASHES FROM an indoor heating appliance
sparked a blaze on a Rolleston property last
week.
Crews from Lincoln and Leeston were
called out to battle the fire in Goulds Rd
about 1.30pm on Thursday.
Five day old embers from the fire place
had been put outside to cool but they blew
into a nearby hedge, causing it to catch fire
which then spread to a double garage.
Lincoln fire brigade chief Richie Bee said
the blaze took about 20 minutes for the
crews to contain.
Bee also said the owner’s quick-thinking
prevented the fire from spreading to the
house on the property.
The garage was destroyed and about 20
metres of hedge damaged.

Big project focus means no rates relief

RATES WILL likely remain
the same after more than
1500 submissions, four days
of hearings and two days of
deliberations.
While the final figure is yet
to be calculated, it is unlikely to
vary much from the proposed
15.6 per cent rise the council
consulted the community on.
Councillors spent two days
making changes to its 2024-34
draft Long Term Plan based on
the submissions.
Feedback ranged from asking
the council to cut costs or to
build new facilities.
During deliberations,
councillors generally followed
the recommendations of council
staff with no major projects cut
from budgets.
It is anticipated double-digit
rises will continue for the next
three years, but rates will go no
higher than 16 per cent after
councillors decided that would
be the maximum.
The maximum rates rise for
the last LTP was set at 6 per
cent.
Selwyn, along with all other
councils, is battling cost
increases.
Since the last LTP, interest
rates have gone from 2.5 per
cent to 6 per cent, roads are
27 per cent more expensive to

cent more expensive, and the
cost of bridges is up 38 per cent

the changes before the final
version is signed off on July 3.
The Big Decisions
Councillors had three big
decisions to debate.
Big decision one is to build
three new park-and-ride facilities
in the district, two in Rolleston
and one in Lincoln which will
cost $11.6 million for all three
sites. But construction will rely on
co-funding from NZ Transport
Agency Waka Kotahi which will
fund 51 per cent of the cost.
The plan will add $4.67 to rates
in 2025 and $17.73 from 2027
onward.
Big decision two was broken
into two parts – a new community
facility and library for Leeston
and upgrades to Leeston Park.
The council decided it
would retain $19m to build the
community centre and library, but
construction would not start until
more consultation was done.
During the submission process,
council executive director of
community services and facilities
Denise Kidd said there were some
interesting submissions which
needed further investigation.
To do that, the council will
establish a working group with
community members. The impact
on rates will be $33.41 per year.
For Leeston Park, council
decided to continue with
landscape improvements which
will cost $3.4m, adding $117.18 to
rates over 10 years.
The council will also look
at a rifle range building at the
park and explore options for a
multi-use facility for small-bore
shooting and archery, but neither
has any funding committed.
Big decision three will see a
recreation facility with two indoor
courts built in Darfield. It will cost
$11.28m and will be built in 2027
and add $18.18 to rates per year.

Sheffield Pool
The Sheffield Pool has been
thrown a lifeline after being up
for demolition due to its age and
condition – the pool tub is 70
years old and is leaking.
While 61.2 per cent of
submissions supported the
closure, submissions from the
Sheffield area wanted the pool to
remain, but it will be handed over
to the community to be run and
funded by a community-run legal
entity.
The council will keep the pool
open for this summer while the
group is established. But there
is still a clock on the pool, if no
agreement is decided by June
30 next year, the pool will be
demolished.
Broadfield Gardens
Despite interest from the
community, the council will not
buy Broadfield Gardens.
The highly rated garden on
Selwyn Rd is currently on the
market. Despite 13 submitters
asking the council to buy the
gardens and keep them publicly
owned, council staff said it would
be too costly.
It is understood the gardens
have a sale price of about $2m,
with the council estimating it
would cost about $200,000 per
year to run.
Staff recommended that those
who want the gardens retained
form a trust to buy the site and
retain community ownership.
Strategic partnerships
Some community groups have
received boosts in their funding
as part of the council’s strategic
partnerships.
Over the next three years, the
following groups will receive
funds from the council: Selwyn
Sports Trust ($140,000), Lincoln
EnviroTown Trust ($150,000),
Te Ara Kākāriki Greenway
Canterbury Trust ($130,000),
24/7 Youth ($100,000), Waihora

VINZ worker killed
in motorcycle crash
TRIBUTES HAVE been paid to
a motorcyclist killed in a crash
in Rolleston.
Shafie Bin Sulaiman, 52, died
after the crash on Jones Rd at
about noon on Saturday, May
18.
He was pronounced dead
at the scene shortly after
emergency services arrived.
There were no other vehicles
involved. Police inquiries into
the circumstances of the crash
are ongoing.
Shafie worked at VINZ in
Rolleston for six years after
immigrating to New Zealand,
from Singapore, in 2015.
His profile on vinz.co.nz
states Shafie had a wide range
of experience, having served as
a soldier in Singapore’s military
for 24 years.
His wife Shafie Angellina
posted about the loss on
Facebook.

Bringing four string fun to the community

THE DARFIELD Ukulele Group,
or ‘Dugs’ as they like to be known,
have staged a free concert at their
local library, to help celebrate New
Zealand Music Month.
The humble ukulele is the toddler
of stringed instruments, with
the players keen to show off its
distinctive sound for the town’s
music lovers.
The Darfield group was formed
in 2018, quickly growing to about
20 members.
Group leader Adele Langlands
has been teaching music for more
than 25 years.
“We talked about having a
group, making it more community
style rather than just
one-on-one tuition. So we decided
we’ll give ukulele a go, and (it was)
amazing.”
She said it was all about people
just having fun.
“There’s all sorts of variety of
backgrounds. Some of them have
played classical music, the piano,
cellist or whatever, and others
have never touched an instrument
before. But it’s the type of instrument
you can learn quite quickly
and join in. Even if you can’t play
it perfectly it doesn’t matter.”
One player reckons the ukulele
is one of the easiest instruments
to learn.
“I’ve tried the guitar, but I just

landscape isn’t changing – it’s
changed, got dressed and left the
sheds.
The Players’ Association
has laid down an ultimatum
to change the governance or
they will force an even greater
disruption.
Its chief Rob Nichol has
put the blame squarely at the
provincial unions for stopping
the introduction of a new model
as the unions struggle to keep
control.
The NPC and the community
game need to have a completely
separate amateur body. This
new body would realise it is
unsustainable to fly around the
country and stay in hotels and
pay players, in what should be
an amateur competition.
The salary cap for the NPC is
$1.1 million with some unions
reporting spending up to $1.4m
– money that doesn’t need to be
spent. That excludes coaches and
support staff.
The crowds don’t warrant it
and the viewing audiences don’t
justify it.
The competition format needs
to change.
One option could be a
conference system with North
and South Island conferences,
with the winner of each
conference playing in a final.
It should have a promotionrelegation
component for
something to aspire to. This
could also open up the door for
an extra Heartland team for the
South Island to be introduced,
such as Canterbury Country.
There will be many differing
ideas on how a new format
should look:
• Removing payments to
players.
• No day training but after
work sessions, with player and
team reviews done online.
• They bus to and from games
where they can, saving money
on expensive flights. Look at
the situation South Canterbury
ended up with, missing out on
a shield challenge due to the
costs of flights, stopping players
having a shot at the shield.
• Games played at parks with
no television requirements,
allowing them to be played at
local domains for everyone to
watch local players they identify
with. The success of Canterbury
v Auckland last year at Rangiora
Showgrounds proved it can be
done.
• The Super Rugby franchises
will have scouts looking at
these games and there is still
an opportunity for someone
that has slipped through to get
picked up by a franchise.
Now to the professional game.
Let’s be honest, most of the top
players have played minimal or
any club rugby or even NPC.
Look at the case of young
Jamie Hannah, ex Christchurch
Boy’s High. He is a great young
player with real ability. Straight

With any change there will
be issues, like where does the
Ranfurly Shield fit in. Does
it become an FA Cup style
competition? Is a new format
going to be manageable? Where
does the women’s professional
game sit? There are more
questions than answers and
many things that need to be
solved, but change needs to
happen and staying with the
status quo is not the answer.

THE CRUSADERS have
stumbled and bumbled through
the season. With one highlight
being the win over the Chiefs
in round six and a low light in
round 9 being well beaten by the
Force.
They can now add another
highlight to a struggling season
with the win over the Blues.
Both sides had motivation for
the game – the Blues cement
themselves at the top, and the
Crusaders need to get themselves
away from the bottom.
The Crusaders showed real
grit with a plan to take it to the
Blues at scrum time and in the
tight with the backs starting to
show some real direction in an
up tempo game plan.
What a great story seeing Antonio
Shalfoon previously from
Lincoln High School. A few
weeks ago his game time was
running out for Springston in
the combined country competition.
He played well and showed
the need for a big tight head lock
in that Crusaders pack.
Does Saturday night’s win
smooth over the lumps of the
season? Definitely not and a
robust review will be needed
from their training (why do
they have so many non-contact
soft tissue injuries?) to the make
up of the coaching group and
management.
But let’s enjoy the moment
and that can be sorted later on.
Rob Penney may have woken up
on Sunday with a headache, but
hopefully because he has had a
couple of celebratory beers and
not over the issues of the past
week.
The Crusaders still require a
lot of results to fall their way to
make the eight so they will need
to fight like they are the third
monkey on the ramp to Noah’s
Ark, and brother it’s starting to
rain.

How to cultivate
the best beans
THERE ARE three things in life
you can count on: Death, taxes,
and broad beans. Here’s how
to cultivate the great gift of the
garden.
Vegetables
Traditionally, broad beans are
sown from March until mid-
May, to stand through the winter
and bear crops in early summer.
Renowned for their hardiness,
broad beans are a favourite
vegetable with many southern
gardeners, as not only do seeds
germinate in cold ground but the
plants prefer heavier soils.
The soil for broad beans should
be well drained and enriched
with plenty of compost. Phosphates,
supplied by adding bone
dust or superphosphate, will
encourage healthy growth. Applying
lime at the rate of 50g per
square metre some time before
sowing sweetens sour, acid soils.
Tall broad bean plants need
to be supported, and they can
provide excellent windbreaks for
tender spring crops. Site the rows
where they will be useful shelter
for the likes of lettuce, outdoor
tomatoes and French beans.
Sow broad beans in double
rows, about 20cm apart, with the
seeds placed about 10cm apart
and 5cm deep. Sow a few extra
seeds at the end of rows to transplant
into any gaps.
If you are growing redflowered
or other heritage broad
beans and want to save seeds, be
aware they will cross-pollinate
with other broad beans within
bee-flying distance and may not
breed true.
Flowers
Gladioli should be lifted this
month, even if the tops still look
a bit green. Lift them and trim
the tops, but do not cut them
off completely. Put the corms
in paper – not plastic – bags on
which the colour or variety is
written and hang in a cool, dry
place to ripen. When the foliage
is completely dry, it can be
removed and the gladioli stored
in boxes or paper bags, but that
is not essential.
Hyacinths can still be planted,
but do not delay if you want
spring blooms. For good spikes
of flowers, the bulbs should be
in rich soil with some bone dust
added to promote bulb growth.
Snowdrops and crocuses can
be planted for a spring display,
too.
Tulips give good results when
planted later in autumn than
other bulbs. They like a rich soil,
with fine river sand under each
bulb to improve drainage.
Hardy annuals, biennials and
perennials can still be planted for
late spring and summer displays
but, as with bulb planting, it is
important to get on with it.
Sweet peas may still be sown
in pots or boxes under shelter.
If this cannot be provided, wait
until spring and place where the
plants will flower.
For those serious about their
sweet peas, trenches for them
can be prepared now. Make them
1m wide and two spades deep.
Mix garden compost, autumn
leaves, seaweed, stable manure or
other organic material into the
subsoil. Replace topsoil, enriched
with bone meal or superphosphate
and crushed limestone
(50g per m each).
Annuals sown earlier for
spring flowering can be thinned
as soon as they can be handled,
leaving 5cm divisions. Further
thinning is necessary as the
plants become larger until they
are finally 20cm or more apart.
Chrysanthemums which have
finished flowering should be
cut down to within 15cm of the
ground to encourage growth
from the basal shoots.
Dahlias left in the ground from
year to year usually produce the
earliest blooms, but unless your
garden is very sheltered this is
not recommended, because hard
frosts can kill the tubers, turning
them to a slimy mess.
Lift them carefully and store
in damp sawdust for the winter
under shelter, ideally in temperatures
between 2 and 5 degrees
Celsius.
If you must leave dahlia tubers
in the ground, they can be protected
from frosts by piling extra
soil over them or covering the
ground with bracken or scrub.
Make a note on the calendar to
lift them in early October and
replant single pieces with a bud
attached.
Fruit
Fruit trees will start appearing
in nurseries soon, and many garden
centres supply a list of what
they will be stocking. If you
want particular varieties, it pays
to get in early.
That applies particularly to
double and triple-grafted apples,
pears, plums and apricots. Check
with fruit trees need pollinators
and choose accordingly.

Stylish, smooth EV ticks all the right boxes
THE ID.4 IS A milestone on
the road to full electrification
for German automotive giant
Volkswagen, clocking in as the
company’s first vehicle built on a
dedicated EV platform.
Volkswagen put a tentative toe
into the pure EV pool three years
ago with an all-electric version of
their iconic Golf hatch.
However, it failed to spark a
lot of interest and was hardly
ground-breaking, sharing
the same platform as internal
combustion engine Golf variants.
It was also held back by a
mediocre real world EV range of
around 200km, before needing
to be tethered to an electric fast
charger to get amped up again.
The first version of the larger
ID.4 mid-sized SUV debuted in
Europe in 2021, with the iteration
sold here launched in 2022.
Covid and supply issues saw it
make a belated arrival in this
part of the world towards the end
of 2023.
There’s plenty going for the
ID.4 in terms of space, technology,
performance, and versatility.
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
For our market, it’s a two
model show comprising the
generously appointed PRO for
$74,990 that’s under scrutiny
in this road test, or the more
lavishly appointed $79,990 PRO+.
Both go the EV distance better
than most, with a real world
electric ranges of 519km.
The ID.4 has the standard
SUV body shape, with its
sibling the ID.5 opting for
a more sophisticated coupe
like appearance. Personally, I
preferred the clean-cut and less
intricate styling of the ID.4.
Getting behind the wheel of
the ID.4 is a tad surreal with the
vehicle sensing your presence
and automatically starting when
you sit in the driver’s seat using
the smart key.
The test car had heaps of heft
from a beefy 77kWh battery
and an electric motor producing
150 kW of power and 310 Nm
of torque. This is more than
enough and with some to spare,
to shift this decent sized SUV
with genuine zip, cocooning
you in silence, whether it’s a laid
back around town excursion, or a
lively open road dash.
Throttle response is
exhilarating and addictive.
Standing start acceleration
provided by the electrified system
makes most conventional engines
look like slouches.
A single speed automatic is
super efficient and its computer
brain’s task of choosing what gear
to select is about as easy as it gets.
The ID.4’s exceptional brake
energy recovery system is among
the best in the EV class.
An electric motor acts as
a generator to make braking
more efficient. Energy released
during braking is converted
into electricity and fed into the
battery.
Using the steering wheel
paddles, you can adjust the
amount of energy recuperation,
and soak up a truly empowering
experience.
A roomy and welcoming cabin
has an abundance of usable
passenger and cargo space.
Instruments and controls
are designed with meticulous
Germanic attention to detail, and
are easy to read and use.
There’s a 12-inch central touch
display, multifunction steering
wheel, push button start, heated
front seats and steering wheel,

A 30-colour ambient light
palate lets you have a lot of fun
around choosing the mood of the
cabin, from bright and bouncy to
laid back and chilled.
Safety is paramount, and the
ID.4 delivers in emphatic fashion
with a coveted 5-Star ANCAP
safety rating. This was earned
through leading-edge safety
tech such as front assist with
predictive pedestrian and cyclist
protection. side assist with rear
traffic alert warns the driver of
collisions with other vehicles,
cyclists, pedestrians and static
obstacles. New assistance systems
are also at play to increase safety.
For example when a door is
opened, exit warning alerts you
if another vehicle or a cyclist is
approaching from behind. It does
this with sound, and visually via
a light signal on the inside of the
exterior mirror housing
All the excellent ride and road
holding traits associated with
Volkswagen are embodied in the
ID.4.
The suspension sees
Macpherson struts fitted at the
front and a multi link set-up
at the rear. Both work their
magic to deliver an immensely
satisfying drive, that’s right out of
the top drawer.
Rear-wheel drive offers
effective traction over most
road surfaces from the good,
the bad, and the down right
hideous. It confidently moves
over these with the electric drive
system expertly transmitted
power across a raft of different
driving situations. Because of the
intelligent electric motor design,
maximum torque is available in
almost an instant.
The high-voltage battery fits
snuggly into the floor of the
ID.4 between the axles, with its
low centre of gravity giving the
vehicle exceptional agility and
balance during brisk cornering.
With its solid and compact
European feel, the test ID.4, had
a genuine and desirable point of
difference over many of its peers.
This is decidedly advantageous
in one of the fastest growing and
most competitive segments of
our new car market.
The test vehicle was subjected
to an unrelenting assortment of
bruising bumps and potholes,
on a couple of lengthy drives on
rural roads, that didn’t show a
shred of country hospitality. I
emerged from this experience
with a deeper respect of the ride
comfort and handling talents of
this outstanding EV.

Terrific T-bucket
You’ve likely seen the eye-catching
1923 Model T hot-rodded out as a
T-bucket with the number plate “Katys
1” over the last 3–4 years, joining local
Christmas parades, including Leeston
and Lincoln. Apart from owners Katy
and Trev, one of its regular passengers—
Koopa the dog—with his leather jacket,
flying helmet, and goggles also catches
everyone’s attention!
In 1978, starting with the body,
windscreen, and various pieces, Trev,
with his boilermaker/welding experience,
drew up the chassis on butcher paper
on the lounge room floor. Constructed
from tube steel, only two T-buckets in
New Zealand are known to have this
type of chassis rather than box steel. This
project was a labour of love, taking many
months to hand tool the chassis.
The key was first turned in 1980,
and the day was memorable as the
house nearly burned down due to
an unattended oven pot roast. In the
excitement of the occasion and hosting
drag racing legend Ron Colett, who built
the engine, the pot roast was forgotten,
and the pan caught fire.
Over the years, Trev and Katy used it as
a drag racing car with slicks, a roll cage,
and differential gearing. Katy raced for
5–6 years at Ruapuna in the Street Class
and said she enjoyed “giving the young
boy racers a bit of a fright” off the start.
The car was tuned to get off the line fast,
and Katy could hold her own, achieving
a 12.2-second quarter mile. With family
involvement in drag racing, their son
Morgan did a 10.04-second quarter
mile. In the late 1990s, the T-bucket
had a complete motor rebuild and was
returned to the road as a hot rod. It now
features a Chev 305 engine, 3-speed auto,
9” diff, and Hoosier Quick Time tyres on
the back.
Katy’s T-bucket stands out with its
unique features. It boasts a vertical fuel
tank, a creation of Trev’s, positioned
behind the seat, allowing a spacious boot
to accommodate all the essentials. Katy
proudly states, “I can fit a full week’s
groceries in that car.” This is not just a
show vehicle; it serves as a daily driver.
It also comes equipped with a full hood
and curtains, stowed under the seats and
ready to be pulled out when needed.
The T-bucket has become a familiar
sight at most Canterbury events, often
seen cruising around the region and
even used for daily commutes. Katy
asserts, “It’s not some precious little
vehicle hidden in a garage, and every
stone chip on it has been earned.” Last
year, it made a memorable appearance at
the Whangamata Beach Hop. It’s been a
car that the whole family has cherished,
with the four children using it on special
occasions, including taking their friends
for a ride, picking up the grandkids from
school, and even serving as a wedding
car.
It’s great to know that a car from 1923
is still an everyday runabout, grabbing
attention and causing a stir

at the West Melton Rifle Range over the
period 2-3 June inclusive.
The activity will involve personnel from the
RNZAF Security Force Operators Course,
RNZAF Base Woodbourne, Blenheim.
Training will involve personnel conducting live
night firing on the West Melton Rifle Range
from 5pm to 10pm.
A series of intermittent weapon firing will be
heard in the local area during the times given.
The RNZAF takes fire risk seriously and will

Sizing up a house design
Those looking to build a new
home are likely to tour show homes,
checking features, noting the number
of rooms and spaciousness of each,
and making mental comparisons
with their existing living quarters
and what they perceive they will need
in their home.
There is no one ideal house size.
Determining square metre size
depends on one’s stage in the family
life cycle and lifestyle. Young couples,
older people downsizing and those
living on their own may want smaller
homes whereas families often seek
space.
Visiting show homes is a good way
to get a spatial impression.
Many building companies have
more than one show home. This
allows them to demonstrate the
range of work they do, the quality of
their workmanship, and to feature
house designs they have on their
books. These homes also provide
examples of the features that can be
incorporated into a new home.
Show homes vary in size. Some are
less than 200 square metres, others
may be around 210m², 220m² or
closer to 240m². A smaller home
may not always feel less spacious.
It depends on design and layout.
A larger home may offer the
opportunity for extra living area in
a separate lounge, a laundry room
inside the house rather than in the
garage, wider entry and hallways, and
larger rooms overall. Extra features
such as walk-in pantries, ensuites and
walk-in robes in the main bedroom,
and additional storage cupboards can
also be accommodated as the square
metres increase.
Building smaller will not
necessarily equate to a significantly
cheaper price. While building
companies work on a square metre
build figure, certain costs are still
incurred such as for the drain laying,
plumbing, kitchen, bathroom, toilet,
and garage with the latter less costly
to build. Adding extra bathrooms
and the like will add more to the final
price however, if the square metres
are taken up in living and bedroom
space or a wider hallway then the
cost is proportionately less. Higher
specified features will certainly
increase the cost of the build.
Making comparisons in both size
and features when viewing show
homes and house designs will help
you determine the size of home to
build. Weigh your needs and wants
against any budgetary constraints,
ensuring you have all the facts and
a clear idea of costs before making
your final decision.

Double Glazing makes
a home warmer
Heat is retained in winter and kept out in
summer while condensation and noise from
outside are reduced.
Modern double glazed windows and
doors are more effective than their earlier
counterparts and far superior to single
glazing which allows heat to escape
through the glass even when there are
thermal curtains.
Double glazing works in much the same
way as a thermos flask where the silver
surface on the inner glass lining reflects
back the temperature of its contents.
Heat is retained in winter and kept out in
summer while condensation and noise
from outside are reduced.
Overseas, triple glazing is very popular
while double glazing is more common in
New Zealand. Both have a gap between
the layers of glass resulting in less heat
transference. The wider the gap, the more
warmth is retained in the home with less
chance of condensation.
The technology around double and
triple glazing has advanced significantly
over the years leading to greater efficiency
though not all products are equal with the
insulation ratings varying between the
various market options.
Ratings depend on the components
used and how the windows and doors
are constructed. Factors are the type and
emissivity of the glass and width between
the panes. Products with an Energy Star
have better thermal performance.
Low-emissivity (low-e) glass, limits the
amount of ultra violet and infrared light
transmitted through the glass; the lower
the level, the more reflective the glass
reducing heat loss by twenty to thirty
percent. The result is a warmer home in
winter while the sun is reflected back
keeping the heat out and the home cooler
in summer.
The minimum air space between each
pane of glass in a double glazed window is
usually ten to sixteen millimetres. Twelve
millimetres is recommended for warmer
parts of New Zealand while the optimum
for Canterbury is from fifteen to seventeen
millimetres.
A step up is argon gas filled windows;
an economic and natural gas. Argon gas
is heavier than air so affords three to
nine percent greater insulation than air
filled double glazing and improved sound
proofing. The window or door unit is
completely sealed so perfectly safe and the
gas used for residential windows is nontoxic.
It is also used in retrofitted windows
to increase energy efficiency especially
where the gap between the glass panes
needs to be less than usual to fit into an
existing timber window frame.
Double glazing is now standard in
new homes with additional options like
argon gas and low-e glass filled windows
becoming increasingly popular due to the
increased benefits they offer, especially as
the additional funds invested are said to
be quickly recouped by the energy savings
made.
If building or renovating, it is worth
investigating the options on the market
and budget permitting, choosing windows
and doors that not only look good but
also offer high performance in terms of
heat retention, noise reduction, deflection
of the effects of the sun and reduced
condensation.

What is the current market doing
in Selwyn?
There have been increased properties
available for rent in the Selwyn area.
These properties rent within a reasonable
timeframe, provided landlords are realistic
about rates and prepared to meet the
market.
What are tenants looking for in a
rental property?
Generally, tenants want to feel warm and
safe in their homes. They seek properties
with good heating and window coverings
to help with cooler weather and save
money on heating, and adequate storage.
Privacy from the street and neighbours
is also important to tenants, so landlords
should consider window coverings that
offer privacy while allowing tenants to open
them.
What do owners look for in
tenants?
Fundamentally, landlords want tenants
who will meet their obligations under
the Residential Tenancies Act, keep the
property clean and tidy, and pay their rent
on time.
What should tenants be aware of ?
When selecting a property, tenants should
avoid landlords unfamiliar with the various
legislation a landlord must follow, or who
asks for more information than legally
required (where the tenant works, for
example). If a landlord does not hold smoke
alarm records or complete and provide a
full healthy homes statement, the tenant
should consider what other breaches the
landlord may commit during the tenancy.
Pet bonds have not yet been introduced
into law, so a landlord should not request
them. During a tenancy, tenants should be
aware that breaches of the Act (damage,
rent arrears, low cleaning standards, etc)
may prevent them from securing another
rental, particularly during a tight market.
Unfortunately, there are scammers out
there, and tenants should never hand over
any money without viewing the property,
particularly when a landlord is requesting
this with some urgency.
What should landlords be aware
of ?
Landlords should be aware of the myriad
of regulations to follow now – this includes
the Residential Tenancies Act, Privacy
Act (specific rules about what a landlord
can ask a tenant and at what stage of the
application process they can ask), the
Health and Safety at Work Act, the Building
Code, healthy homes and smoke alarm
regulations. Fines for failing to comply
with smoke alarm regulations carry a max
penalty of $7200, and WorkSafe breaches
can reach hundreds of thousands. Many
clients don’t realise their insurance relies on
numerous landlord obligations, including
documenting evidence of quarterly
inspections. When selecting a tenant, a
landlord should base their decisions on
a selection of facts around rental history,
ability to pay rent, credit and background
checking, and finding the tenant that will
be the best fit for their style of property.
A happy tenant is likely to stay longer,
maximising their investment.
