Countrypoliceman keeping children safe
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Senior Constable Ken Terry ‘‘lives and
breaths’’ children’s safety.
‘‘I love my job keeping children safe, and
working with young people. It is a
privilege,’’ he says.
The country policeman’s work takes him
into more than 40 schools in the
Waimakariri and Hurunui Districts,
where he is highly regarded, trusted and
loved for his commitment to road safety, by
students,school staff and school
communities.
Constable Terry’s passion for road safety
education, ajob he has been doing in
North Canterbury for over 13 years, and
his genuine concern for the wellbeing of
students,has seen him awarded the
prestigious annual Yellow Ribbon Road
Safety Hero Award.
The accolade recognises individuals
who demonstrate exceptional dedication
to promoting road safety within their
communities.
His tenure in road safety with the NZ
Police as aSchool Community Officer was
one of the key reasons he was chosen from
over 30 other nominees for the award.
Constable Terry was presented with the
award in Auckland, during the Yellow
Ribbon Road Safety Alliance Hui.
Aspokesperson for the Alliance says it is
honoured to recogniseSenior Constable
Ken Terry for his outstanding dedication
and unwavering commitment to road
safety.
Regional rate to rise by 17.9 percent throughout Canty
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Canterburyratepayers will have to
dig deep into their pockets as
Environment Canterbury proposes a
17.9 percent rate increase.
It is lower than the 24.2 percent it
had proposed, after the regional
council found savings, including
delaying some transport projects,
after two days of intensive debate.
Lighting up ... Canterbury AA District Council chairman John Skevington and Senior Constable Ken Terry tie on the front and rear light
sets during avisit to Leithfield School as part of the Be Safe Be Seen initiative, which involves distributing cycle lights to school children.
Acting chairperson Craig Pauling
says while there were some tense
negotiations, he is pleased with the
outcome.
The councillors voted on 15 main
resolutions, with several resulting in
close division among the 16
councillors, he says.
‘‘Even though it was tense
throughout, there was good support
at the end, and people felt there was
some good give and take in the room,’’
Councillor Pauling said.
‘‘The feeling in the room was, ‘we
have done all we could have’.’’
More than 1300 submissions were
received on the draft Long Term
Plan, with 153 making oral
presentations during the hearings,
which held over four days.
‘‘We tested the water with some
bold options in our consultation and
the response demonstrated there
were mixed views, with some saying
Get peace of mind with an
Annual Care Plan
One off payment or instalments can take care of
your pet’s routine health needs for anentire year
we needed to deliver more, while
others identified we could make
savings or prioritise work,’’ Cr
Pauling says.
Savings were made by delaying
some of the proposed public
transport projects, including
delaying work on amass transit
business case until year 2and
postponing bus route improvement
work until year 3.
Market gives back to Kaiapoi
By SHELLEY TOPP
Kaiapoi Saturday Market
stallholders are giving back to the
community that has supported them
for around 20 years.
The stallholders of the notforprofit
market, which was established
in 2005, have donated $500 to the
Kaiapoi Food Forest.
They also plan to donate $500 to the
Kaiapoi Menz Shed.
‘‘We want to give back to the
community which has supported us
Constable exemplifies the spirit of the award
From Page 1
His workexemplified the spiritofthe
Road Safety Hero Award, and the
Alliance extended its deepest gratitude
for Constable Terry’s ongoing efforts to
make roads safer for everyone.
Constable Terry, who is in his 38th
year with the New Zealand Police is
‘‘absolutely chuffed’’ with the award.
He had no idea there was such an
award, or who had nominated him when
he was told he had been selected.
However, Constable Terry says being
acknowledged at anational level is an
absolute thrill.
He says it is his passion for people,
and helping them navigate our busy
roads, that is his main driver.
Accidents remain etched in his mind
like most police, he says, and he
remembers every fatal crash vividly.
He also sees the devastatingimpact
accidents have on families and
communities.
He says the programme has endured
in North Canterbury in spite of it being
immeasurable through statistics and
Many submitters supported river resilience
From Page 1
‘‘It makes sense to delay this work so we
haveabetter idea of where the
Government and Waka Kotahi (New
Zealand Transport Agency) are
heading,’’ Cr Pauling says.
‘‘Some councillors thought we should
be more cautious, but if we don’tput it in
the plan, we don’tget anythingfrom
Waka Kotahi.’’
Around threequarters of submissions
supported the council increasing its
spending on ‘‘river resilience’’,
including flood protection, and pest and
weed control.
The council is proposing to invest$25
forall those years,'' Shirley Gollan, a
stallholder from Fernside, and
market coordinator, says.
The notforprofitcommunity
market is held nearthe Kaiapoi
River in Williams Reserve, every
Saturday morning.
Every stall holder is charged $5 to
take part.
However as the Waimakariri
District Councilallows the
organisers to hold it in the reserve at
no cost, they have decided to put that
money back into the community to
figures.
Constable Terry was nominated by
the Canterbury /West Coast Automobile
Association District Council, who noted
Ken has been the driving force behind
the highly successful Be Safe Be Seen
cycle light initiative for school
children.
He will continue to deliver the
programme until he retires, ‘‘which
won’t be along time away’’, he says.
Mark White –AACanterbury/West
Coast Councillor andnominator of Ken,
says NZ Police are very fortunate ‘‘as
are we as parents and grandparents to
have an individual like Ken who lives
and breathes children's safety’’.
‘‘Ken is talked about in suchhigh
regard in schools andinour wider
community.
‘‘Ken's passion for road safety and his
genuine concern for the wellbeing of
our children have made him an
invaluable asset to our community.
‘‘This award is asmall, but fitting
recognitionofhis tremendous
contributions,’’hesays.
million ayear, over the next 10 years, to
boost flood protection.
There was strong support for a
districtwide rate for river resilience in
Selwyn, and the council was considering
similar options from the Ashley
Rakahuri River and other rivers in
South Canterbury.
Cr Pauling says it would need support
from the community, local councils and
ultimately central Government.
‘‘Over the last five years we have been
gettingmore and more requests for how
we might move forward in addressing
our rivers.
‘‘It is recognition that rivers are
important to everybody.’’
He says river resilience was anational
issue, as disruption to bridges on major
thank them for their support.
‘‘We really appreciate the support
we get from the council and the
community,’’ Shirley says.
‘‘We couldn’t exist without that
support.
‘‘Councillor Brent Cairns is very
good.
‘‘He pops around everySaturday
morning to see how we are going.’’
During the colder months the
market usually attracts around 10
stalls, but in summer and spring
there can be 16 or more.
The Be Safe Be Seen initiative,
which involves distributing cycle
lights to school children for their
bikes, has received overwhelmingly
positive feedback.
‘‘The programme's success is a
testament to Ken’s dedication and
his ability to engage with the
community, particularly the
schoolchildren who eagerly
participated in the road safety
education classes and light
giveaways.’’
John Skevington –AACanterbury/
West Coast Council Chairperson, has
spearheaded the AA bike lights
project, wholeheartedly supported
by other AA councillors.
‘‘Having police officers like Ken
has been essential to getting our AA
bike lights project off the ground.
‘‘It’s been alot of fun and agreat
privilege working with him, and
other Community Constables in
Canterbury, to roll out this road
safety initiative to children who ride
bikes to school.’’
routes could affect the whole country.
‘‘Room for rivers’’ was an important
conversation and could be achieved by
buying land, such as Environment
Canterbury buying land beside the
Ashburton River.
Another example was the
Waimakariri District Council’s land
purchase on Lineside Road, beside the
Cam Ruataniwha River.
‘‘By acquiring the land we can do
something great for the community,’’ Cr
Pauling says.
Council staff will now finalise the
LongTerm Plan before it is audited by
Audit New Zealand, and adopted by
councillors on June 26.
Grizzly find ... Rat detector dog Evie locates acache of decayinganimal carcasses which were illegally dumped in the AshleyRakahuri
Regional Park, near Ashley Village recently.
Dumped carcasses attract rats
By SHELLEY TOPP
Illegal dumping of animal carcasses
along the AshleyRakahuri River ,near
Rangiora, is causing the rat popularion
to explode.
The rotting carcasses are providing
easy fodder for the rodents and other
predators, including feral cats and
harrier hawks.
All prey on the endangered birds
living along the river.
The problem has become so bad that
the volunteer trapping work being done
in the AshleyRakahuri Regional Park to
keep the predators under control has
become ineffective.
There are fears that if animal
carcasses continue to be dumped along
the river, rodent numbers will become
uncontrollable which could see the
population of endangered birds living
there wiped out.
‘‘Putting out traps and expecting the
rats to walk in is insufficient,’’ Ashley
Rakahuri Rivercare Group (ARRG)
operations manager, Grant Davey says.
In 2019 an entire 48 nest, blackfronted
tern/tarapiroe colony, and more
than 100 gull chicks, were destroyed by
rats along the river.
Since then the rodent problem has
continued to worsen.
Three weeks ago, Grant found several
dead sheep and the remains of a
butchered cattle beast, which had
recently been dumped, on the north
bank of the river about akilometre
downstream from Ashley Village. In a
ditch nearby he found the remains of
‘‘This area has been afavourite
dropping area for dead animals for
years,’’ he says.
Another popular dumping place is the
north bank of the river just upstream
from the Cones Road bridge.
Other ARRG trappers have also
reported the remains of pigs and deer
being dumped on both sides of the river
six or seven kilometres upstream from
Rangiora.
In recent years rat detector dogs have
proved valuable assets in the battle to
prevent the river area becoming
overrun with rodents.
Rat detector dog Evie, owned by Grant
and his wife Val, has recently proved to
be invaluable along the river.
After only afew months on the job the
young Welsh springer spaniel quickly
surpassed the number of rats caught by
trappers along the river during the same
time.
‘‘Our trapping programme simply
doesn't work. We need to try other things
hence the dogs,’’ Grant says.
But with so many rats now camped
along the river feasting on the illegally
dumped rotting carcasses, controlling
rodent numbers is mission impossible
for one dog, and hiring professional dog
handlers with their rat detector dogs is
prohibitively expensive.
Environment Canterbury (ECan)
stinking mess the carcasses create, but it
is costly and timeconsuming work for
them.
Fly tippers caught dumping rubbish,
including animal carcasses, in the the
park face an instant $750 fine.
However, with ECan completing 13
carcass removal jobs so far this year at
the AshleyRakahuri Regional Park and
Waimakariri River Regional Park, plus
23 removals last year and 24 in 2022, the
threat of afine seems to be an
ineffective deterrent to flytippers.
ECan’s manager parks and forests
Chuck Dowdell says that on average over
the last five years the regional council
has dealt with acarcass removal job
every two weeks.
‘‘Dumping carcasses in the parks is
inconsiderate to park users and
environmentally unacceptable. We bury
carcasses where they will not have any
impacts on the environment or people’s
wellbeing.’’
However with digger hire and staff
time this can cost hundreds of dollars
for each removal and thousands in total
each year, with all costs funded from
regional council rates.
‘‘We encourage the public to advise us
of any flytipping they see and provide us
with photos if possible,’’ he says.
This can be done by emailing the duty
ranger at: duty.ranger@ecan.govt.nz or
phoning ECan on 03 353 9007.
The stealth with which fly tippers
operate makes it difficult to catch them
dumping rubbish.
However, it is hoped that the
installation of motionsensitive, nightcapable,
cameras in the region’s parks
this month will help.
Hit British rock musical at Rangiora HS
BySHELLEY TOPP
We Will Rock You, ahit musical based
on the music of British rock band Queen,
is in production at RangioraHigh
School.
The show, which is being coproduced
by the school’s director of performing
arts and teacher of commerceand
dance, Bex McLean, and the school’s
business manager, David Lowe, will
open in the school’s hall on Wednesday,
June 19, at 7pm, and run until Saturday,
June 22.
It will be the school’s first theatrical
production since 2017 when High School
Musical, which was based on the popular
television film of the same name, was
produced.
We Will Rock You will showcase the
large number of talented performing
arts students at the school.
The long delay in getting back up on
stage to do another theatrical
production was largely due to the
complications caused by the Covid10
pandemic.
However, producing abig theatrical
event such as this is ahuge for those
involved, so getting the timing right to
begin was crucial.
The time came when Bex was
appointed director of performing arts at
Rangiora High School last year.
It was anew role for the school, and
Bex was keen to provide ‘‘ourtalented
performing arts students with achance
to shine both on stage and back stage’’.
She received great support for her
idea to produce We Will Rock You from
the school board and principal Bruce
Kearney.
‘‘Rangiora High School is strong in a
number of sports, but we also havea
huge number of actors, singers, dancers,
musicians, technical (sound and
lighting) and visual arts students who
deservetohave their talents
represented too,’’ Bex says.
‘‘This show promotesthe arts and
gives it an equal standing to our sports
teams. The teamwork,friendships
formed and opportunity it providesfor
ourschool’s performing arts students to
feel partofsomething special, and part
of ateam, is important to me.’’
Bex hopes the school and wider
community will support everyone
involved with the show by attending.
Thereare 70 students and 20 staff
working on the musical, plus anumber
of pupils and staffhelping behind the
scenes.
This includes the school’ssound and
lighting team, with students also
assisting in frontofhouse, backstage,
hair and makeup, costuming and coproducing.
Aformer Rangiora High School pupil,
Jacob Coxhill, also has arole in the
show, playing Galileo, and ateacher,
Nigel Mills, who is atalented actor and
singer, will play the role of Buddy.
‘‘It takes an absolute team effort to
producethis `beast' as there are so many
moving parts,’’ Bex says.
We Will Rock You tells the futuristic
story of agroup of ‘‘Bohemians’’ who are
fighting to restore freedom of thought in
an Orwellian society where ‘‘Planet
Earth’’ has been renamed‘‘Planet Mall’’
and all non computergenerated music
has been banned.
The show is being directed by Bryony
Jamison, awidely experienced
thespian, who is singing tutor/advanced
senior drama at Rangiora’s Hartley
School of Performing Arts and also
works as an apprentice with the Jesters
and the Court Theatre in Christchurch.
Tickets are $25 each, via online
ticketing platform Humanatix.
Rocking the look ... Rangiora High School pupils Cassia Hendriks, aged 17, left, Heidi
Huge tourism benefits as dark sky nation
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Becoming adark sky nation could have
huge benefits for New Zealand tourism,
says Tourism Minister Matt Doocey.
The Royal Astronomical Society of
New Zealand believes New Zealand
could become the world’s dark sky
nation, an idea which Mr Doocey, who is
also Waimakariri MP, says he supports.
To become adark sky nation the
country would need to cut light
pollution, such as outdoor lighting, to
allow for greater stargazing and
astronomy.
Tourism New Zealand research
indicated more than 70 percent of
people thinking about visiting New
Zealand were interested in stargazing,
Mr Doocey says.
The best times for stargazing were
during the ‘‘offpeak and shoulder
seasons’’ for tourism, which meant
protecting New Zealand’s night skies
could provide an economic boost when
tourist towns were otherwise quiet.
‘‘It is something Iamkeen to
encourage,’’ Mr Doocey says.
‘‘We want to grow tourism because we
know it brings jobs to rural New
Zealand.
‘‘Tourism is very seasonal, so we need
to be looking at how we can market and
promote New Zealand during those
shoulder and offpeak periods.’’
Mr Doocey says an economic impact
report commissioned by Enterprise
North Canterbury last year showed a
dark sky trail would provide an
economic boost in the region.
The report said adark sky reserve
could generate $4.6 million of visitor
spending in Waimakariri and create up
to 24 jobs.
The Oxford Dark Sky Group obtained
dark sky park status in January for the
Dark sky ... The Oxford Observatory is keen to protect Oxford's night sky from light
pollution.
the Dark Sky International.
Oxford Dark Sky president Raul Elias
Drago said there was no cost to the
group, thanks to support from the
community, the Waimakariri District
Council, OxfordOhoka Community
Board and Government agencies such as
the Department of Conservation.
The group was now planning to apply
for dark sky reserve status, which would
incorporate the town of Oxford.
Mr Doocey says the Oxford example
showed how communities coming
together could achieve economic
benefits at little cost.
5
Enterprise North Canterbury has
been working with other regional
tourism organisations (RTOs) to develop
aCanterbury dark sky trail.
The Aoraki Mackenzie International
Dark Sky Reserve was established in
2012, while the Kaikōura Dark Sky Trust
is about to apply for dark sky sanctuary
status and interest is growing in other
Canterbury communities.
‘‘I would encourage RTOs to think
about whether dark skies should be part
of their destination management plans,’’
Mr Doocey said.
‘‘There is real potential for aground
up approach and Iwould be really
supportive of that.’’
Mr EliasDrago, who is also the Royal
Astronomical Society of New Zealand
(RASNZ) secretary, said anational
approach was needed, perhaps led by
the Department of Conservation.
‘‘The Department of Conservation has
been very supportive regionally,’’ he
says.
‘‘The Rangiora office supported our
application and other regional offices
have supported other applications, but
every time each regional office is doing
the same thing.
‘‘If the work was done nationally, we
wouldn’t have to replicate the work in
every region.’’
Mr Doocey has accepted an invitation
to speak at the New Zealand Starlight
Conference in Tekapo in October, which
is organised by RASNZ and the Aoraki
Mackenzie International Dark Sky
Reserve board.
‘‘We are hoping to use the conference
as aspringboard to advance the
discussion around becoming adark sky
nation,’’ Mr EliasDrago says.
Niue became the world’s first
International dark sky nation in 2020.
Proud ofcouncillors
As the Local Government sector
grappleswith the challenges of the
viability of individual Long Term Plans,
and for councils up and down the
country to demonstrate their fiscal
responsibility, at alocal level Ifeel
proud of the integrity that elected
membershave brought to this intensive
process.
Local Government thereforehas arole
to champion, and change our
sustainability position for now, and for
future generations.
The broad focus area for change
withinLocal Government is funding and
financing, water resources inclusive of
fresh, waste and stormwater,climate
change, transport, and the Resource
Management reform with the Fast Track
delivery of projects that may have
regional and national benefits.
These issues are individually matters
of significance notwithstanding the
cumulative impact.
Around the electorate with
STUART SMITH MP FOR KAIKOURA
Water use improved
Many years ago, Iworked on the Ceres
Farms in Wongan Hills, 187 km north of
Perth in the heart of the Western
Australian Wheat Belt.
Last month, Iwas able to return for a
visit anddiscovered that with the
adoption of newtechniques and
technology, it has improved production
and environmental outcomes.
They are not mutually exclusive.
Early settlers cleared the bush,
resulting in water ‘running’ off the
surface and pooling in low lying areas
where it eventually evaporated,
leaving the salt behind.
To address this, Ceres Farms
changed cultivation and soil
management practices by deep ripping
which breaks up apan that builds up
over time as ‘fines’ migrate through the
soilprofile and form apan.
Stubble is now‘crunched’ and
incorporated into the soil rather than
beingburntwhich builds up humus in
the soil.
Salt buildup makes bore water
brackish, and not suitable for human
consumption, so drinking water is
piped from Perth.
While subsidised, is expensive.
To address this issue, Ceres Farms,
along with its changed cultivation and
soil management practices, installed a
desalination plant in 2018 to treat the
salty groundwater in alowlying area
of over 30 hectares.
that of the subsidised Perth scheme
While in Western Australia, Ialso
visited the Margaret River Wine
Region to look at how they handle
public tastings in their cellar doors.
This is of great interest given my
Members Bill —the ‘Sale and Supply of
Alcohol (Cellar Door Tasting)
Amendment Bill —isonthe order
paper.
Margaret River is the home of Cape
Mentelle Wines founder David
Hohnen, who also founded iconic
Marlborough winery Cloudy Bay.
Wine tastings at cellar doors attract a
charge ranging from $10 AU —often
waived with asubsequent purchase.
New Zealand’s alcohol licensing for
cellar doors is out of step, and the
Cellar Door Bill, if passed into law will
bring our legislation into line.
It is Budget day (May 30). I am in
always, it is great to hear your views on
what matters most to you, so Ican
Schools bulging at the seams as building projects reviewed
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Crunchtime is fast approachingfor two
North Canterbury schools bulging atthe
seams.
Woodend School and Te Kura oTuahiwi
are on the Ministry of Education’slist of
352 building projects under review.
The review is not expected to be
completed until July.
Te Kura oTuahiwi, a Māori immersion
and bilingual school between Kaiapoi and
Rangiora, was due to receive five new
classrooms and anew hall, with building
set to begin last December and be
completed next month.
But it was delayed and is now on hold,
pending the review.
Principal Dot Singh said the project was
designed to take the school’s capacity to
230 students.
For now the school is sitting at its
present capacity of 160, with another 33
pupils preenrolled to start later this year.
‘‘Now we are wondering where we will
put all of those tamariki.
‘‘Ifeel they (the Ministry) will come to
the party in some form, it just might not be
how we planned it.’’
WoodendSchool principal Andrew
Retallick said his roll was continuing to
grow faster than anticipated.
The school roll hit 480 students last
week and looked set to reach at least 520
by the end of the year.
‘‘I’ve had 70 students enrol so far this
year and we have 50 Year 8s leaving at the
end of the year, so it shows you how much
we are growing.’’
The site’s capacity is around 490 and by
using the school library as aclassroom, Mr
Retallick said the school could cater for
around 510 students.
The school’s growth comes on the back
of the booming Ravenswood subdivision.
‘‘The toughest part is the uncertainty
and having no clear direction, but Ican’t
do anything about it until Iget some
direction from the Ministry,’’ he said.
Schools around the country are feeling
the pressure while they wait for an update
from the Ministry of Education’s review.
Education Minister Erica Stanford
announced an inquiry in February, which
immediately put the brakes on the
projects.
At the time, Ms Stanford said the scope
of the building works were ‘‘unrealistic
and unaffordable’’.
Ministry of Education Te Tai Runga
(South) Hautū (leader) Nancy Bell said
there were no updates on the North
Canterbury building projects.
‘‘We continue to work closely with the
schools in our planning to deliver roll
growth teaching spaces to accommodate
the schools’ inzone rolls as required.’’
NEWS
The North Canterbury News, May 30, 2024
Passion ignites new life at Mocketts Motors
As the youth unemployment rate
rises to almost double the national
employment rate, experts are
suggesting employers don’t want
to take achance on young people.
But in the Hurunui District, the
Mayors Taskforce for Jobs
scheme is having apositive effect
on young people, helping them
get in to jobs with willing
employers in the predominantly
rural district.
Petrol and passion are igniting new life
into an historic Culverden workshop.
New owneroperator of Mocketts
Motors, Chris Gudsell says his vision was
to get the workshop up and running for the
community, and to pay homage to the
history of the site.
‘‘There are just so many stories about
this building.’’
With 20 years experience in almost all
facets of the automotive industry, Chris
reopened Culverden’s historic Mocketts
Motors in November 2023, bringing the
iconic building to new life.
He says the community quickly started
dropping by to share their own stories,
and connections with the business, which
has stood at the heart of Culverden on
SH7 since the start of the 20th Century.
Aplaque on the wall lists the workshop
businesses previous owners.
Mayor Marie Black points to her own
familial connection to the workshop.
‘‘This faćade has sat at the heart of this
community ever since Iremember. It
defines Culverden,’’ she says.
Chris says when the building was
opened there was so much history stored
away in it.
Photographs and vintage memorabilia
rescued from the back rooms are helping
New life ... Owneroperator of Mocketts Motors Chris Gudsell (left), automotive
engineering apprentice Marco Shepherd, Hurunui District Mayor Marie Black, and Hurunui
Council’s MTFJ Programme Lead Chris Sutherland and MTFJ Youth Connector Anna
Scott, look under the bonnet of Chris’s orangeandblack 1971 Valiant Pacer 3speed, which
can be spotted at the workshop when its not at acar show.
to create amuseum and automotive
vintage display that will soon be open to
the public.
His passion is shared by his new
automotive engineering apprentice,
Marco Shepherd, aged 20, who started his
apprenticeship one month after Gudsell
opened for business.
‘‘I did my apprenticeship while flatting
with Marcos father, aNorth Canterbury
mechanic,’’ says Chris.
‘‘Its coming full circle to give back.’’
Mrs Black says to support Chris in
providing an opportunity of alifetime to a
local young person, Hurunui Mayors
Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ) arranged the
apprenticeship under the MTFJ
programme.
‘‘With my dad being amechanic, I’ve
been into cars all my life and then this
Kai
7
opportunity came along to turn my hobby
into acareer.
‘‘My mum could see this coming amile
away,’’ says Marco.
‘‘Being back in the engine pit has
brought back memories. The first time I
was in the engine bay was when my dad
was working on a1969 Dodge Charger. I
was about five years old.’’
Its not just the connection with the past
that Chris and Marco bring to the
business. Mocketts Motors now has its own
website, Facebook and Instagram pages,
and they are soon to launch aYoutube
channel.
‘‘We’ve set up aGoPro over one engine
bay for putting together videos. Marco has
brought that side into things, with great
input and ideas,’’ says Chris.
Hot rods, classic performance cars, and
classic vintage cars, are both Chris’s and
Marco’s passion, with some very special
cars coming into the workshop.
All get the attention to detail that has
helped Chris build up aloyal customer
base that travels from all over South
Island, and further, to the Culverden
workshop.
An immaculately restored 1960 Ford
Thunderbird, 1961 Volvo 544 LHD and a
1963 Triumph Herald are just afew that
have come through the workshop doors.
‘‘Marco is being exposed to abroader
range of experience than in most
workshops,’’ says Chris. ‘‘He can go from
stripping an engine to changing brake
pads.’’
Mrs Black says MTFJ’s success is its
grassroots connections with local
communities, which allows for tailored
solutions to help young people into
employment and training.
‘‘Mocketts Motors holds aspecial place
in Culverden, with its connections to the
community for over 100 years. Its really
rewarding to see that community
connection continuing today.’’
Mt Hutt snowexpress
ByROBYN BRISTOW
Alove for the ski slopes and an
adventurous spirit will take Cara Luxmore
to the ski fields of Mt Hutt this winter.
Cara, atour bus driver, is offering abus
service from Rangiora to Mt Hutt five days
aweek when the ski resort opens on June
14.
Courtesy of her mum Lynn Proctor, and
step dad John, Cara, will drive their
22seater bus to the slopes from Thursday
to Monday with eight pick up points along
the way.
Asolo mum,and atour bus driver for
Oceania in the summer months, Cara
decided to give the Mt Hutt run acrack to
fill in the winter months, and to help pay
the bills.
Cara, whose adventurous spirithas seen
her involved in extensive touring and truck
driving, including underground gold
mining, has Class 2to5driver licences.
She describes herselfasslightly mad,
funny, easy going, professional and
friendly, and says she is not one to sit
around waiting until the summer months
to get back to work.
Her first stop to get her venture off the
ground was North Canterbury Enterprise
where she was encouraged to go to Work
and Income (Winz), to see if there was any
assistance available to help her hit the
road to Mt Hutt.
There she was introduced to mentor
Judy Celmins, who has encouraged her to
get the venture on the road, and help with
aBusiness Plan to help her access agrant
through Winz to help the project become a
realty.
Cara says having the bus provided by her
mum and step dad, with whom she has a
great relationship, is providing the
momentum to get the show on the road.
Afew alterations means the bus can
accommodate passenger’s ski gear.
Snow express ... Cara Luxmore in her
22seater bus ready to head to the ski slopes
at Mt Hutt.
PHOTO: SUPPLIED
Awebsite —snowexpress.co.nz — is up
and running, and is the vehicle for
bookings for the $55 trip to and from the
skifield.
Cara plans eight stops along the way —
Rangiora, Cust, Oxford, Waddington,
Coalgate, Glentunnel, Windwhistle and Mt
Hutt Lodge.
‘Then it is straight to Mt Hutt by about
8.30am to allow people to start skiing by
9am,’’ she says.
‘‘People will book and pay on line. If
people who haven’t are waiting at one of
the stops, they will miss the bus if there is
no room for them.’’
Cara’s website will also have tips and
‘‘tricks’’ on how to keep warm on the
mountain, and she will also run ablog.
As she prepares for her first trip up the
mountain she is also considering making
the service available to Waimakariri
school groups.
Waste is no match for the latest
The new German manufactured
56tonne compactor is only the second
of its kind in New Zealand, bought to
shred and squash waste in the regional
landfill owned by Transwaste
At $1.4 million dollars the compactor
is one of the most expensive machines
Transwaste Chairman Mr Gill Cox
says the new compactor will ensure the
landfill can accommodate as much
waste as possible within the smallest
practical space.
‘‘The weight of the compactor
combined with the design of its 7tonne
wheels ensures waste is shredded and
squashed into the smallest space,’’ Mr
Cox says.
‘‘With this new machine we can fitthe
maximumamount of waste into the
space available, making best use of the
landfill.
‘‘Expanding the landfill with new
contoured and lined cells is an
expensive process so the more waste we
can fit into an existing cell represents a
huge saving.’’
The compactor is also very fuel
efficient reducing carbon emissions, a
factor in the decision to buy it.
The German manufactured
compactor has wheels designed to
shred and compact waste as it runs over
the landfill.
It’s capable of compacting around
1500 tonnes of waste every day. Design
improvements include abonnet that
opens hydraulically to allow easy access
to servicethe engine, and an air
filtration system in the cab to keep out
dust from the landfill.
Hayden Leach, regional manager
Canterbury Landfill and Energy, says
the new compactor is avery
sophisticated piece of purposebuilt
machinery.
‘‘The compactor arrived without its
wheels, whichhad to be fitted
separately by aspecialist from the
supplier who took two days to get the
compactor fully assembled ready to
operate.’’
The team who will operate the
compactor had two days of dedicated
training from the supplier before they
could operate the machine.
National Breast Cancer Appeal Day last
Thursday saw amultitudeofpink ribbon
activities around the region.
At the Skurr Centre in the Rangiora
Showgrounds, four friends hosted a
Pink Ribbon morning tea for about100
guests, raising $2565 for The Breast
Cancer Foundation
Lifelong friends Sammy Schwind,
Amalia Jennings, Charlotte Turner and
Carol Thompson created the event to
honourmembers of their families and
friendswhose lives had been touched by
Sammy lost her mum to breast cancer
and thought holding amorning tea
would be agood way to raise funds for
The Breast Cancer Foundation.
More people than expected attended
the function which impressed the four
friends.
Sammy says it was so wonderful to see
everyone there.
‘‘The people of Rangiora havebeen so
generous to us. Many businesses kindly
donated goods and services to our
raffles and silent auction, and lots of our
friends helped us out by baking all the
wonderful cakes and scones for the
morning tea.’’
Some of the items offered were a
weekend at Hanmer, clothes vouchers, a
handbag and manymore.
The morningtea was ahigh tea with
trays of creamedscones, tea and coffee,
sandwiches and cakes on each of the
tables.
Sammy says there was even alolly
table, which was donated byone woman,
who handmade everything on it.
‘‘Next year, we are already planning
for acombined Pink Ribbon/ Blue
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Fish and Game is unimpressed with a
proposal to ban hunting dogs from the
Ashley Rakahuri River estuary during
duck shooting season.
The Waimakariri District Council is
consulting on anew Northern Pegasus
Bay Bylaw, which includes banning all
dogs on the spit and the Ashley
Rakahuri River and Saltwater Creek
estuary.
The bylaw governs what activities
are allowed on the district’s beaches.
The new rules will remove an
exemption which has allowed holders
of Fish and Game hunting licenses to
take their dogs into the estuary area
during gamebird hunting season.
The measures are designed to
protect ecological values and bird
habitats around the estuary and
wetlands.
But Fish and Game North
Canterbury game bird specialistMatt
Garrick was not impressed with the
proposed ban.
He said he corresponded with the
council ayear ago, but had not had any
further contact.
‘‘I explained that duck season does
not overlap during critical, sensitive
periods,such as nesting, so there
would be no conflict with dogs used for
game bird hunting.’’
He said he requested data to
demonstrate game bird hunting and
dogs in the winter was having an effect
on the estuary's bird life, but had
heard nothing further.
The estuary is home to threatened
bird species including wrybills, blackbill
gulls,banded dotterels, blackfronted
terns and pied oystercatchers,
some of which are also endangered.
Acouncil spokesperson saidstaff
reached out to Fish and Game North
Canterbury in January and May last
year to inform the organisation it was
conducting areview of the bylaw.
‘‘Based on feedback we received
from the public consultation on the
bylaw, which ran for three months over
summer of 2023/24, we are now
proposing to exclude all dogs and this
would include hunting dogs.
‘‘We welcome any feedback on the
proposed changes to the bylaw from
Fishand Game and any other group or
individual.’’
Hurunui ratepayers are facing arevised
rates hike of 10.98 percent.
Hurunui District Council staff have
taken afinetooth comb to the 2024/34
Long Term Plan budgets to find some
savings, after earlier proposing arates
riseof12.37%.
Councillors gave clear instructions to
staff to find some savings during
deliberations earlier this month.
Speaking at Tuesday’s council
meeting, chief financialofficer Jason
Beck said savings had been found across
several budgets.
The staffallocation for this year has
been reduced from 155.41 to 150.05 full
time equivalent and the councillors’
mileage allowance has also had atrim.
The pain is expectedtocontinue, as
the council is predicting a14.49% rates
hike for the 2025/26 financial year, Mr
Beck said.
But the rate rises from year 3were
expectedtodrop below 5%.
The council consultedoninvestment
in roading, the development of the
Queen Mary Historic Reserve in
HanmerSprings and rating for
stormwateractivities.
Provision has also been made to
replenish the coastal bund at Amberley
Beach.
Abund is atype of embankment which
protects against the sea.
Amberley Beach ratepayers will be
levied $303.56 ayear, an increase from
$258.83 ayear, which was requested by
the residents’ group.
Chief executive Hamish Dobbie said
the council was also exploring
purchasing land at acost of $1 million as
it plans for future proactive relocation
as part of the Amberley Beach Coastal
Adaptation Plan, which was adopted last
year.
It would be debt funded and paid off by
atargeted rate, once an agreement has
been reached with residents.
The final 2024/34 Long Term Plan is
due to be adopted at the next council
meeting on June 25.
Milestonefor WoodfordGleninDecember
By JOHN COSGROVE
Woodford Glen Speedway celebrates 50
years of racing this December, and
helpingtopreserve all the memories
experienced at the Kaiapoibased
speedway is author Lindsay Richards.
Lindsay is producing the official
history of the track and fondly
remembers being there on the opening
night on Saturday, December7,1974.
He spent those first years setting up
the drivers’ club up and working with
the original owners Errol Inwood and
Ron Rutherford to get things running
successfully, all while campaigning a
saloon car himself for acouple of
seasons.
Lindsay was the first presidentofthe
Woodford Glen Speedway Association
(WGSA) which eventuallypurchased
WoodfordGlen —named after owners:
InWOOD and RutherFORD —in1979. It
required alot of fundraisingand the
help of some members who underwrote
the $100,000 bank loan.
‘‘We worked hard promoting the
speedway and paid off the loan in just
two years,’’ says Lindsay.
Over the next decade, WGSA
negotiated with surrounding land
owners to buy or swap parcels of land to
eventually settle on 28 acres of freehold
land which hosts the speedway’s
extensive facilities today.
Lindsay, who also served as Clerk of
the Course and promoter, says it was
hard work in those early decades.
‘‘We were competing against
Ruapuna’sestablished speedway track,
but eventually, we emerged with our
own lineup of stockcars,modifieds and
saloon car racing.’’
The Christchurch Speedway
Association is the second oldest
Speedway club in New Zealand and
built the Ruapuna track in 1949.
Memories ... History author Lindsay Richards surrounded by 50 years of memories from
Woodford Glen Speedway.
PHOTO: JOHN COSGROVE
‘‘They were tough butfun times,‘‘ says
Lindsay, ‘‘We have had many good bits
and some bad bits but we are still here
today.’’
The idea for ahistory book has been
brewing for several years.
‘‘Ten years ago at our fortieth,
someone asked why hasn’t abook
chronicling the history of the track, and
the club since 1974, been written yet.
‘‘‘Now when we meet, often at
funerals,someone always asks about
the book, so now that I’m retired I
started to write it.’’
Initially, despite his years working in
the media, Lindsay has found the job
taxing.
‘‘All the information from those early
yearsisinhard copy format and had to
be collated by hand from meeting
programmes, media stories and
yearbooks. ‘‘Luckily there have been
some very good books written already
about speedway in New Zealand and
they had lots about the early years of
the speedway.’’
He says it’s now getting easier thanks
to the internet as he can even find out
lap times and race wins from 20 years
ago online.
‘‘It is still hard factchecking the
stories Iknow about or havebeen told,
but it’s getting easier now that
Palmerston Northbased Speedway
New Zealand board member, Tim
Savell has offered to help me with the
book's layout. With his and many others'
kind help, we should have it available
well before December.’’
Fond Memory
One of Lindsay’s favourite memories is
taking the then Prime Minister, David
Lange, for aride in aMonster Truck
Kiwi Thunder.
It was afivetonne Nissan Navara King
Cub, standing four metres high and
powered by an 800hp Chev V8 engine. It
was being campaigned around
speedway tracks in the country during
1987/88.
‘‘The guy who built and drove the
truck, Mike Parkes from Auckland, was
staying with me, prior to doing acar
crush event at Woodford Glen on the
coming Saturday night.
‘‘The rig was parked outside my
house in Shirley Road, and created so
muchtraffic congestion, from people
slowing down to look at it, that the
policeasked if it could be relocated to
side road instead,’’ he says.
That weekend was also the 1988 Lady
Wigram Trophy race.
‘‘We had arranged for the truck to
drive slowly around in agrass area in
front of the spectator barriers during
the lunch break.’’
This was atime when Mr Lange, was
pursuing his own motor racing passion,
racing his Ford Laser in the AGC Ford
Laser TX3i National Championships at
the Wigram meeting that very day.
‘‘As the monster truckapproached
the pit area, the Prime Minister walked
across to have abetter look.’’
He duly climbed aboard and was
taken for aride.
Caution urged as nitrate research continues
By DAVIDHILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
A group of Waimakariri farmers is
hoping to assist Environment
Canterbury in getting abetter
understanding of the state of local
groundwater.
The Waimakariri LandcareTrust has
been in talks with Environment
Canterbury about working together to
conduct testing later this year to better
understand nitrate levels in the
district’s groundwater.
EnvironmentCanterbury’s 2023
groundwater survey, of 349 wells across
Canterbury, was released earlier this
month and showed high nitrate levels
and E. coli in some water sources.
Recent water testing by Greenpeace
has also raised alarm bells.
But Oxford dairy farmer and trustee
Cameron Henderson says the sample
sizes were too small to give aclear
understanding of the state of
groundwater.
He hoped testing would be conducted
during the next irrigation season.
‘‘We want to build abetter picture of
where the nitrates are coming from.’’
Mr Henderson says therewas ‘‘no
disputing the data’’ about nitrate levels
in groundwater, but more testing was
needed before drawing conclusions.
‘‘We know there are high levels of
nitratesinsome areas, but is it dairying?
‘‘It might end up being dairying, but
we don’t want to point the finger in the
wrong direction before we haveenough
data.’’
Cam Henderson ... Waimakariri Landcare Trust trustee says building apicture of where nitrates are coming from is important.
Waimakariri district was ‘‘a 20 to
30year phenomenon’’, but the ‘‘lag
time’’ of groundwaterflowing
downstream meant some of the nitrate
contamination could date back much
earlier.
Scientific studies showed
groundwater had a‘‘lag time’’of50years
or more to flow downstream before
Environment Canterbury acting
groundwater science manager Davina
ANorth Canterbury polled Hereford
bull has been selected from 23 bulls,
representing eight breeds, to join the
LIC Beef team for this coming AI
season.
Beechwood In Time 7, asixyearold,
belongs to Rob and Mary Ann
Burrows of Ashley.
He is at Xcell Breeding Centre in
Woodend having 10,000 straws of
semen collected, having come through
the Beef and Lamb Progeny test at
Pāmu’s Renown dairy farm in the
Waikato.
Atotal of 635 calves by the 23 sires
were reared to amean weight of 85kg
at the farm. In Time came out as areal
all round bull for low birth weight to
above average growth —two traits
which usually contradict one another.
His calves were born seventh
shortest for gestation length, fourth to
lightest at birth giving good calving
ease, and were fifth to seventh
heaviest at weaning —200, 400, and
600 day weight.
His dairy beef index of $138 is also
well above the average, says Rob.
‘‘All of In Time’s calves are polled,
as he doesn’t carry the horn gene.
‘‘Also his friendly temperament has
obviously come through in the dairy
cross calves who were easily reared,
and fourth placed to reach 89kg out of
the shed. They also thrived out in the
paddock.
Christchurchbased Anzco Foods’
$60.9 million profit after tax is going
against the tide of major meat
processors recording losses.
The company owned by Japan’s
Itoham Yonekyu Holdings posted a
relatively strong result in difficult
trading conditions for the year ending
last December despite it being adrop
from the previous year’s $147.7m
profit.
It stacked up well against Alliance
Group’s nearly $70.2m net loss on the
back of arecord $73.6m profit, and the
joint ChineseKiwi owned Silver Fern
Farms’ loss of $24.4m from apositive
$189.3m the year before.
Anzco’s turnover of $1.83 billion was
behind on $1.90b in 2022.
Chief executive Peter Conley said a
focus on core business activities and
growing returns from strategic
investments was key to the success.
He said the result was pleasing
considering the challenging business
environment the sector experienced
last year.
The Covid19 recovery brought an
upswing in tourism and restaurant
business was countered by the global
impact of rising costs and interest
rates, as well as consumers facing
higher living costs, he said.
‘‘The recovery in China has been
slower than anticipated and this
coincided with difficult trading
conditions for some key products in
other markets.
‘‘With astrong global reach, Anzco
managed to effectively navigate
market pricing challenges for beef
and lamb at various stages of the
season.’’
Mr Conley said amajor project
during the year was the depopulation
and repopulation of cattle at its Five
Star Beef operation, as part of the
programme to eradicate Mycoplasma
bovis.
Five Star Beef was out of the market
for about six months.
‘‘The depopulation, cleaning and
repopulation had aconsiderable
impact on our staff, customers, and
suppliers working with the Five Star
Beef business.
‘‘We’re grateful to these affected
parties for their ongoing faith in our
highly valued products and continuing
to work with us as we reestablish this
business.’’
He said acore focus was buying
livestock to meet customer
expectations both domestically and
offshore.
‘‘During the year Anzco’s China
office became operational, and with
our other offshore offices in Japan,
Australia, North America, the United
Kingdom and Europe, contributed to
our strategy of getting closer to our
customers and delivering increased
revenue from our red meat products.’’
Anzco says its valueadd food and
healthcare businesses performed well
and continued to grow their
contribution to the company’s result.
The company continued to invest in
lower emissions technologies to
improve its environmental
compliance and performance.
Native shelterbelts explored
for biodiversity benefits
Canterbury researchers are
exploring how planting native
shelterbelts and hedgerows on
farms can deliver biodiversity
benefits and make good business
sense.
Native hedgerows and shelterbelts on
farms can help boost biodiversity.
While stands of weatherworn
macrocarpa and pine are still a
common sight in rural Canterbury, a
growing number of farmers are planting
native trees on their land.
Conservation biologist and University
of Canterbury |TeWhare Wānanga o
Waitaha senior lecturer in the School of
Biological Sciences Dr Sara Kross, is
leading aseries of projects aimed at
better understanding this trend.
Her team is investigating how the
conservation and rewilding potential of
increased native planting can coexist
alongside the commercial imperatives
of farming.
‘Noncrop’ planting features such as
shelterbelts, hedgerows, and bush
blocks are of particular interest to the
researchers.
‘‘These features provide shelter for
crops and livestock, as well as
preventing erosion and runoff,’’ Dr
Kross says.
‘‘But they are also important for
biodiversity and because those habitats
exist at the field margin there’s alot
more interaction with the farmland and
the way it’s managed.’’
She sees huge potential for farmers to
assist the establishment of ‘green
corridors’ of native plantings across
Canterbury.
‘‘These pathways of habitats can
provide food, water, nesting, breeding,
and migration sites for native species
including birds, lizards, and
invertebrates.’’
While this could significantly
improve biodiversity on the plains, Dr
Kross acknowledges this goal can be at
odds with the commercial side of
farming.
‘‘Most farmers are really passionate
stewards of their land and want to leave
it in better condition.
‘‘At the same time, their farms are
businesses and that creates ahierarchy
of needs.’’
She hopes the new research will show
that improving biodiversity and
meeting economic goals need not be
mutually exclusive.
Encouragingly, similar research from
around the world has shown an overall
positive impact for farmers who
develop native habitats on farm
margins.
‘‘There aren’t just ethical or aesthetic
reasons to plant natives,’’ says Dr Kross.
‘‘It has the potential to deliver real
production and financial benefits in the
long run.’’
While it’s not known how much
Canterbury land is planted in noncrop
features, an early part of the research
will see UC PhD student Mary Buford
Turnage use remote sensing technology
to map existing plantings.
‘‘We’re hoping to use methods that
will allow us to differentiate between
the native hedgerows and the exotic
shelterbelts,’’ says Dr Kross.
‘‘That will also help us to see where
the gaps are and to map connectivity.’’
Anumber of plant nurseries now
specialise in advising farmers in the
choice of natives to suit their
requirements.
FARM MAINTENANCE
The North Canterbury News, May 30, 2024
19
Maintenance cuts costs
By JOHN COSGROVE
Fences around paddocks on farms are
not one of those install and forget about it
items.
Scott Heasley of Heasley Fencing and
Contracting has been working in the
industry for 30 years.
He says it is one of those annual jobs
farmers need to factor into their
maintenance schedules.
‘‘At this time of the year, if the farmers
are up in the high country, they will want
to loosen their wires off for the snow and
frost.’’
It pays to loosen them off alittle bit for
the winter to stop fences getting flattened
in the snow, Scott says
Normally, individual fencing wires are
tensioned: Electric wire 2.5 mmm are be
strained to 100 kgs, and plain wires 2.5
mm strained to 150 kgs.
Too high astrain puts too much stress
on the fence.
‘‘Let them off afraction, and don’t over
tighten them to save you having abill
come summertime.’’
The North Canterbury contractor says
farmers are hurting at the moment, and
fence maintenance now, will help save
time and money in the future.
Another important element Mr Heasley
advises is to use New Zealand standard
wires.
‘‘There are only two good products on
the market NZWire and Waratah Wire.
‘‘They’re made to meet NZ
specifications and the fence lines we
install with them are expected to last a
minimum of 50 years.’’
‘‘If built properly, agood fence should
last 50 to 100 years, using highquality
steel wires and posts, then you will get
that longevity out of your fences.
‘‘General maintenance is key. Use highquality
products, wire with NZ wire mark
is of ahigh quality, and will last.’’
Fence maintenance .. Maintenance on farm
fences can save time and money later.
PHOTO: SUPPLIED
Electric fencing also needs regular
maintenance.
Follow the safety guidelines, making
sure it is turned off before you start any
maintenance work on your portable or
static lines.
The first step is to look at the wires,
looking along their entire length for
frayed or exposed bits caused by bites,
rips or chaffing.
Then look at the mains power source, it
will tell how much voltage is being
delivered to the system.
If there is not enough power, then it
may not be reaching the far away
paddocks.
Check the joint clamps for any signs of
wear or corrosion. Use afault finder to
see the amount of volts running through
your system.
High numbers indicate losses caused
by faulty or worn parts.
If you have recently upgraded or
expanded the system, make sure the
earthing systems used matches the new
higher voltages.
Think safety first —always.
Kaiapoi improves its quarter-final hopes
RUGBY
Collated BY PETER WILLIAMS
At least one Kaiapoi supporter is
known to have abandoned, what
he believed to be asinking ship,
when he left his team’s Club Day
at half time.
Kaiapoi at that point was
trailing Ohoka by 026.
The disillusioned supporter
was disgusted at what he saw as
an awful performance against an
impressive Ohoka outfit.
It took asecondhalf Houdini
act of mammoth proportions to
refloat Kaiapoi’s chances of
qualifying for the quarterfinals.
However, that is what
eventuated with Kaiapoi running
in 33 unanswered points in the
second half.
Instead it was Ohoka whose
chances of proceeding further in
this seasons Luisetti Seeds
Combined Counctry competition
took afatal blow when it failed to
defend its 26 point lead. Just over
amonth ago Ohoka had been top
of the Group Btable after 4
consecutive wins to open the
competition, but now 4
consecutive losses leaves it
languishing in eighth place with
no chance of progressing to post
section play.
In Pool Athe quarterfinalists
have been known for some time.
GlenmarkCheviot who is top of
this pool is the only team already
assured of ahome quarterfinal,
while main interest in this Pool
on the final day of roundrobin
play on Saturday will be in the
clash between Prebbleton and
Southern who are locked
together in second position. The
winner will get the advantage of a
home quarterfinal
Pool Bthough is much closer.
Waihora has virtually sealed the
top spot, but Celtic, Southbridge
and Kaiapoi are all locked
together on 27 points, just two
ahead of Darfield. Despite its
heroics last Saturday, Kaiapoi is
still arguably in the most
vulnerable position, as it must
travel to Darfield.
The winner of that match is
guaranteed to proceed, but if
Kaiapoi falters its only hope will
be if either Celtic or Southbridge
stumble against Ashley or
Springston respectively.
Kaiapoi vOhoka
In agame of two halves it was
Kaiapoiwho came back from
being 260 down at half time to
snatch alate, dramatic win over a
gallant Ohoka side.
It was club day at Kaiapoi.
Ohoka flew out of the blocks,
enjoyingalions share of
possession and territory.
Attackingfrom everywhere
and making alot of metres
around the ruck and on the
edges, its ability to go back to the
short side andfind amismatch
was impressive. Ohoka scored
regularly throughout the first
half dotting down four tries. Scott
Allinconverted 3. It was looking
good for the away side as it
entered half time.
Afrustrated Kaiapoi side came
out in the second half,
eliminating the errors it was
making inthe first, and holding
on to the ball for long periods of
time. It scored quickly through
blindside flanker Sid Coster and
from there started to make
regular breaks and trips into the
Ohoka 22.
Eventually the pressure told
with Bailey Counihan scoring,
converted by first five Lance
Taylor. Ohoka received two
yellow cardsaround this time,
and the gaps started to show.
Strong running by second five
CyrilReece, and apowerful
scrum, had Kaiapoi scoring two
more tries to left wingShak
Bassi, andnumber 8Chris Smith.
Taylor converted both, tying the
score at 26all.
As the game entered the final 7
minutes Ohoka missed along
range penalty goal that would’ve
seen it take the lead. Then after a
hectic 2minute period, the game
changed. Acharge down and
break from Kaiapoi half back Leo
McConchie, was followed by a
turnoverand break from Ohoka,
whichled to atackle and ball
strip from Reece, who galloped
30 metres,being pushed on by a
vocal home crowd saw him claim
the match winner with 90
seconds left on the clock. Taylor
converted. Ohoka received the
ball from the kick off but was
unable to find any gaps, and
Kaiapoi completed adramatic
comefrombehind victory.
For Kaiapoi centre Isaiah
flanker, turned hooker Jared
Gilmore were standouts. For
Oxford vHurunui
This match was played out
between two very evenly
matched teams but as a
spectacle, it disappointed.
Most of the first half was played
between the two 22s and neither
side really looked like scoring
until Harry Muir, who was having
agood match for Oxford at first
five, broke the deadlock in the
36th minute. Not to be outdone
Hurunuiswept straight on to
attack and aconverted try to Josh
Cavanagh gave it anarrow 75
lead at the break.
Five minutes into the second
half Dan Brooker,who got
throughapower of work for
Oxford, gave his team a107 lead
which it retained formost of the
rest of the match. During this
period Hurunuihad the
territorial advantage but staunch
Oxford defence, with George
Prain, Jesse Houston and Ben
Foster to the fore, snuffed out any
chances Hurunuicreated.
The turning point came in the
72nd minute when tireless
Hurunuiflanker, Gus Waghorn,
was sinbinned for failing to roll
away after atackle. With its
opponents down aman, Oxford
sensed an opportunity and
consecutive tries to Houston and
Brooker sealed aClub Day
victory for Oxford. Hurunui
struck back right on time when
Cale Dobby crossed.
While the final scoreline
flattered Oxford, it did deserve
its 4try to 2victory. Prop Ben
second half.
GlenmarkCheviot vWest Melton
GlenmarkCheviot started well at
Magpie Stadium (Cheviot),
consistently applying pressure
on the visitors.
The pressureproved too much
for West Melton with aHarry
Allen try to start the points off for
the day. GlenmarkCheviot kept
its foot down by dominating set
piece, particularly the scrums.
Off the back of this strong set
piece, the backs enjoyed front
foot ball, with some great inter
play which lead to Jake Vincent
bagging adouble in the first half,
in what was amanofthematch
performance.
Angus Gibb, again proved
incredibly tough to contain,
making an immense amount of
post contact metres to
continually get Glenmark
Cheviot on the front foot. Ethan
McDuff rounded out the first half
with awalk over try.
West Melton came out in the
second half much more strongly,
especially stand out performer
Ilaisa Gabrieli, who was aforce
on the left wing. He lead West
Melton to anumber of line
breaks, and large periods of
dominance in the second half.
Andrew Zuppicich, Glenmark
Cheviot, dropped the ball over
the line, but made up for this
later with atry in the 81st minute.
GlenmarkCheviot 41 (Harry
Allen, Jake Vincent (2) Ethan
McDuff, Andrew Zuppicich tries,)
beat West Melton 19.
Springston vAshley
Intent on apositive start, it took
only 10 minutes for Ashley to go
out to a10nil advantage with
tries to Matt Kippenberger from
alineout drive, and Korbyn Gray
who dashed 60 metres to score
the visitors second try.
Goal kicking lapses again
plagued Ashley’s game plan and
would later prove to be its
Achilles heel .
Springston, somewhat shocked
by the start, knuckled down and
its forwards went to work being
rewarded with aconverted try
after 14 minutes.
From then on the story of the
day, from Ashley’s viewpoint, was
missed kicks, mistakes, penalties,
alot of frustrating rugby with
many attacking opportunities
going unrewarded with last pass
errors.
Ashley’s solitary points in the
second half came from another
try to Matt Kippenberger when
the visitors finally put together a
well worked attack in the 64th
minute. Both sides then had
opportunities to go on and win
the game with Springston
drawing level in the 74th minute
with atry.
With both sides reduced to 14
players, fading light and training
lights turned on, winter rugby
which started in full sunlight was
reduced to arather sombre
affair, reflecting Ashley’s
fortunes. With 3minutes to go,
Springston had apenalty kick to
win the game. It hit the cross bar
bouncing back into the field of
play. An unfortunate injury in the
ensuing ruck resulted in Ashley’s
Jack Regan needing assistance to
leave the field. The time taken
for treatment of Regan reignited
the Ashley side and from the
penalty abreak out by Korbyn
Gray went the length of the field.
This foray was rewarded with a
kickable penalty opportunity, but
Ashley opted for alineout option,
touch was missed, and the game
was over.
Springston 15 drew with Ashley
15 (Matt Kippenberger (2),
Korbyn Gray tries).
Robbie Stokes is hoping to claim backtoback
wins in his Ford Fiesta AP4
when the Canterbury Rally returns
this weekend.
Stokes won the event last year in a
Ford Escort, the first time the event
has been won in a2WD car for 36
years.
His younger brother Jack Stokes,
with co driver Sarah Faulkner, will
also be competing in the event, and is
out for redemption after crashing out
on the final stage in 2023.
Stokes Motorsport, based in
Waikuku, has had avery successful
start to the season.
Robbie, alongside new codriver
Sarah Brennan, has secured second
overall at the first two rounds of the
New Zealand Rally Championship
(NZRC).
On the back of these two
performances, the pair lead the
national championship.
Jack has shown great pace in his
rookie year of the NZRC. He has
achieved two podium finishes in his
Ford Fiesta R2 at the Otago and South
Canterbury Rally’s, even after losing
time in the latter event due to a
snapped gear stick.
The Canterbury Rally is not part of
the NZRC but will count towards the
South Island based Mainland Rally
Championship.
‘‘Heading back to local roads for the
Canterbury Rally is always ahighlight
for us.
‘‘This is where Igot my first rally
win, and it would be awesome to be
able to do that again especially with
friends and family supporting,’’ says
Robbie.
‘‘We are really proud to have Team
Hutchinson Ford backing us this
season. As ateam we are finally
getting the results we knew were
possible and to have their support
helps us to focus on the driving.’’
The Canterbury Rally will be held
on Sunday, June 2.
Eleven North Canterbury locals will
be competing in the event which has
eight stages covering atotal of 140km.
Most will be held in theOkuku and
Ashley Forest, with plenty of
spectating opportunities.
The final stage will be held at
Ruapuna Motorsport Park with the
first car due to start at 3.55pm. Entry is
$5 per person, or $10 acar with all
proceeds going to the Cancer Society.
Saracens’ stalwart Geoff
Cherry was celebrating his
200th senior match for the
club, but there was little else
to celebrate at Southbrook
Park.
An accomplished Methven
team were relentless from the
kickoff and got away to a210
lead in as many minutes.
Shocked saracens finally able
to get their hands on the ball
and strung together multiple
phases to allow flanker Dave
Addison to cross over near the
posts. Oscar Burney slotted the
conversion. This gave
Saracens some confidence.
They managed once again to go
on the attack and crossed over
in the corner but
unfortunately the winger
dropped the ball over the line.
Methven maintained their
pointaminute spree taking a
427 lead into halftime.
The second half brought more
of the same with Saracens
managing only aconsolation
Culver Formula FirstRookie-of-the-Year
By JOHN COSGROVE
Fernsideschool pupil Jackson Culver is
the youngesteverrace winner and
Formula First Rookie of the Year in New
Zealand motorsport history.
The 12yearold from Loburn in North
Canterbury, won the Formula Firstendofseasonrace
at Manfield, with afaultless
performance in the onehour endurance
race.
He is the youngest at 12 years and 225
days, to do so in the 56yearhistory of the
category, and to take thecoveted RookieoftheYear
title.
He is younger than other nowfamous
drivers such as Scott Dixon, Nick
Cassidy, and Liam Lawson to take
victory in aFormula Firstsingleseater
racing car. They achieved their wins at
the age of 13.
Jackson benefited from gaining his
nationalmotor racing licence when the
age limit was lowered to 12.
His debut race win came one
weekend after he secured Rookieof
theYear in the New Zealand Formula
First Championship, 212 points clear of
his nearest rival.
He finished sixth overall for the
eightround championship when he
amassed 22 top10 finishes over the 25
races, eight times in the top six.
‘‘From what Iwanted to achieve at
the start of the season, to what I've
achieved, I'm happy,’’says Jackson.
He says he came into the pits after
finishing the final race and he didn't
know whether he had won it or not.
‘‘I asked afew people and they said
I'dwon, and then it took acouple of
minutesfor me to realise I'd won this
race.’’
Jackson started karting when he was
six and over the years has won many
titles and races.
He spent last year racing karts in
Australia beforehestepped up to the
Formula First series.
Jackson's father,Paul Culver,a
property and business investor, says
every three weeks they wereonaplane
to somewhereinAussie, from January
to the end of August.
‘‘He missed the winter series in
Formula First, but we received a
special dispensation from Motorsport
New Zealand, which meant he could
start in the summer national series
based on his karting successes.’’
Paul has had alifetime interest in
motorsport. ‘‘I did abit of karting and
rallying when Iwas younger, now Ilook
forward to spending time with my four
childrenand helping my two sons in
motorsport.’’ Jackson, meanwhile, will
race in the upcoming 2024 Formula
First winter series at Manfield.
Cheviot teen takes step towards ultimate motocross goal
By SHELLEY TOPP
Cheviot teenager Richard Spencer has
become New Zealand’s fourth fasted
motocross rider in his class.
He achieved the result in the 1316 yearold
85cc class, at the threeday New
Zealand Junior Motocross Nationals,
which were held last month at Flipp’s
Motocross Park Circuit in Himatangi, near
Levin.
The new ranking is another important
step towards Richard's ultimate goal of
becoming an international motocross
rider representing New Zealand.
It was achieved competing against a
classy field of 30 young riders, including
Levi Townley,who has raced extensively
overseas, and is the son of Ben Townley,
winner of the 2004 MX World
Championship, and Brodie Court from
Australia, who finished first and second
respectively.
This followed ahard fought battle to the
very end between North Island rider Bo
Phillips and Richard. Their battle
resulted in athirdequal draw but after a
count back Richard, who suffered two
serious crashes in race 3, was placed
fourth.
Richard, aged 14, was initially ‘‘double
classing’’ at the nationals, also entering
the 1214 125cc class.
He rode three races of the five in that
competition, but had to pull out after the
last crashinthe 85cc eventtoallow the
heavy bruising he sustained to go down.
However, even though he missed
competing in two races of the 125cc
competition,points earned in the first
three races enabled him to finish 12th in
that class competing against 28 riders.
Richard has been riding motocross
since he was twoyearsold. His parents
Fiona and Danny are sheep and beef
farmers in the Ethelton Valley, near
Cheviot. Fiona says both Danny and
Richard are motorbike mad and they both
use them to get around the farm. Their
passion for the motocross sport is taking
the family on ‘‘an amazing journey, with
some major ups and downs since 2018’',
Fiona says.
In December 2021 Richard broke his
femur at the Rat Track SuperCross in
Nelson which kept him away from
Motocross powerhouse ... Cheviot Area
School pupil Richard Spencer, aged 14, of
Cheviot, with his motocrossbikes at his
parents' farm in the EtheltonValley, near
Cheviot.
competition for almost ayear. Then, soon
after being given the all clear to race again
Richard broke both his arms in an
accident riding at afriend's farm. That
required more surgery and another three
months away from racing. ‘‘Neither
accident has fazed the young rider. ``He
has come back faster than before,’’ Fiona
says.
Richard, who was awarded the Cheviot
Lions Sportsperson of the Year Award in
2021, is fortunate to have the sponsorship
and support of numerous North
Canterbury businesses, Fiona says. Taylor
Shearing of Cheviot, Amuri.net of
Culverden, Bob McLeary Yamaha of
Rangiora, and Davaar Logging of Greta
Valley have been with Richard since the
beginning. Brendan Esler Builders of
Amberley, DynoworxinAshburton and
Moto SR in Taupo have also played ahuge
part in Richard’s support network and
helping him get to the next level. But
23MX Coaching, which is run by Marshall
Phillips of Kaiapoi, has been one of the
biggest assets to Richard’s performance in
the last two years, Fiona says.
‘‘Marshall has kept Richard to atraining
programme, both on and off the bike,
which Richard has followed with
commitment and the hard work has
certainly paid off.’’ He also took time off
work to follow the riders he coaches to the
What’s happening in your
community...
Setting the Record Straight onNitrates
Therehavebeensomereports in the medialately
discussing nitratelevelspredominantly in privatewells
in theWaimakariri andotherneighbouringdistricts.
Iwould just like to clarify afew things.
The testing was carried out byGreenpeace.
They allege that several public water supplies
have concerning levels of nitrates present inthe
samples. In Waimakariri this includes the Oxford
Rural No. 1supply.
This is simply not true.
Council drinking water supplies are tested monthly
for nitrates inaccordance with the Drinking Water
Quality Assurance Rules which sets out source
water monitoring requirements.
Theresults across allCouncil watersuppliesare all
less than 50 percentofthe MaximumAllowable Value
(MAV)under theDrinkingWater Standards(which
aligns with WorldHealthOrganisationguidelines), this
meanstheyare alllessthan5.65mg/L.
Taumata Arowai, the water services regulator,
is responsible for making sure drinking water
suppliers provide safe drinking water. Taumata
Arowai have set the MAV for Nitrate-N indrinking
water at11.3mg/L, which isinline with the
guidelines from the World Health Organisation
and other international standards including the
European Union and Australia.
This meansnitrate levels in theOxfordRural No 1supply
andall otherWaimakaririCouncil watersuppliesare
well within thesafedrinkingwater standard.
For private well owners inthe district who have
been alarmed bythe levels alleged byGreenpeace,
I would suggest having their water tested by
aregistered laboratory, so they have all the
necessary and factual information.
If residents are currently not on council water
supplies but would like todiscuss their options,
then they can contact our customer services team
and beput in touch with staff to talk about their
water supply options.
Council recently conducted hearings to listen to
people’s submissions on the Long Term Plan (LTP).
Iwould like tothank everyone who took the
time to come along and speak, we really do
value your feedback.
The next stage inthe process isfor Council to
deliberate onall the all the feedback received
from the community which will help to inform our
decision making.
The final decision on the LTP will be signed off
next month.
Road Safety Week activities
Orange road cones, stop /gosigns
and traffic lights were part of the
lessons at Ashgrove School last
week.
Staff from Waka Kotahi New
Zealand Transport Agency,
Waimakariri District Council,
Beca and Corde visited the
school on Wednesday, May 22, to
talk about Road Safety Week.
Beca school road safety work
programme leader Heather Law
says Ashgrove School was one of
16 schools around the country
chosen for aspecial road safety
session last Wednesday.
Year 2and 3students from
Ashgrove School heard a
children’s story on road safety,
before going outside for some
practical lessons.
‘‘It is anice way to give alittle
back to the community we live
and work in,’’ Heather says.
The story, Queen of the Road’’,
about amum who is astop / go
sign traffic controller, was
written by Heather’s mum,
Jennifer Beck, of Auckland. Once
outside, the children learned
how to set up temporary road
signs, place orange road cones in
the right place, how to use traffic
lights and about stop /gosigns.
Follow the sign ... Ashgrove School students learn how to use the Stop
