SECHELT SENIORS ACTIVITY CENTRE NEWS
Providing The Best
Service Possible
BY RICHARD WARD
It’s been another great month at the Centre. Lots of activities.
Lots of rentals. Lots of good food consumed. At the May
board meeting Treasurer Alison Kowalewski reported another
positive balance in the monthly profit and loss sheet. The
MySeniorCenter (MSC) membership system is showing its value,
validating the decision to implement it. One negative consequence
however is the increased stress level imposed upon our many
wonderful office volunteers. The growing membership base has also
increased the business of the front desk tremendously. Handling the
many requirements for running the MSC software and attending to
the myriad office needs is tremendously challenging. This is unfair to
them, and we need to address this issue. Therefore, we plan to hire an
Office Manager, who would be a constant at the front desk, in control
of MSC operations, and a consistent voice responding to member
requirements and questions during open hours. This position will be in
addition to current staff member Gill Smith who will be the Manager of
Operations and Engagement. She will continue the great work she does
coordinating activities, rentals, communication needs and community
outreach. She’s the driving force behind the Echo.
SOUTH COAST
1979
Treasurer Alison Kowalewski presented a budget projection
for 2024 year at the May Board meeting, showing that we
are in a strong financial position and indicating that we could
cover the additional cost of close to $40,000 for the new
position. However, one requirement of the budget projection
is an increase in SSAC membership fees to $40, but with no
increase in activity fees, which will remain $4 and $6. The
Board consequently voted in favour of the hiring and the
increase in membership fees starting in September 2024.
Also included in the projection was $35,000 in anticipated
donations to the General Revenue Program. Last year we
were very fortunate that over $46,000 was donated to this
program. Despite our strong revenue from meals, activities,
and rentals we still are dependent on donations to allow us
to bridge the gap between expenses and revenue. We are
confident that moving forward we will be able to continue
to provide high quality affordable services and activities to
our members.
On the topic of donations, the Affordable Lunch Program
launched in September 2023 has been a tremendous success
as members have shown their generosity to others, to contain
meal costs. Since September, over $6,500 has been donated
to this program. The donation box on the lunch counter alone
generates an average of just over $50 per week. In September
we set a target of $10,000 to offset revenue deficit on kitchen
operations. At that time, we stated that frozen entrees would
be held at $6 and $8, and no hot entrée would be over $12.
Moving forward that will still be the case, but with slight
adjustment. All hot entrees will be $12, there will be no $11
options. The two exceptions will be Friday Fish and Chips
staying at $10 and one other hot entrée will be offered on a
particular day each week at $10.
We do have a shortage of volunteers to wash dishes using
the sterilizer/dishwasher and to hand wash pans. So, if you
are able bodied and would like to volunteer for 4 hours a
week please check in at the front desk and fill in a volunteer
information sheet. The SSAC operates because of over 150
volunteers generously giving of their time. Thanks so much to
all of them.
Bingo at the SSAC
Catch the Bingo Fever!
It was a great day on May 21 st as we presented
the winning amount of $1,284 to the winner
of the progressive game, Patricia Melville,
who is one of our
regular attendees at
the Bingo session. We
normally have 25 to 35
regular attendees at
the afternoon Bingos
held in the dining room.
However, the progressive
game builds in value
week to week. To
accommodate a bigger
crowd, we had to move
into the auditorium for
two Tuesday sessions.
Lucky Winner!
Congratulations to Patricia
Melville for winning our $1,254
Progressive Jackpot.
On May 21 st with the 59 th number called, the limit
for the progressive game that day, Patricia called
“BINGO” and won her prize.
In an earlier edition of the ECHO we announced
that we would be buying more kiosks for the
MySeniorCenter (MSC) system to better deal with
the number of members scanning in for various
activities, events and lunch etc. At that time, we said
that this would cost approximately $10,000 over
and above the original $10,000 cost of the initial
setup. BC Gaming requires a separate gaming account
for Bingo profits. That is where the initial $10,000
payment for the MSC system came from. To pay for
the additional kiosks and scanners we forecasted
that the gaming account would build up to another
$10,000, by the last session of Bingo, which will be
at the end of June when we stop for our summer
vacation. We are pleased to announce that as of May
21 st the account balance surpassed $10,000.
We couldn’t successfully offer Bingo to our SSAC
membership without the consistent efforts of our
enthusiastic volunteers, including Chris Twaits,
Jan Baines, Debbie Campbell, Chris Kuck, Audrey
McConnachie, Eryl Shindel, and Chris Hadaway.
Bingos are held Tuesdays at 2:30pm – 4:30pm (doors
open at 2pm) in the Dining Room unless a larger
crowd necessitates a move into the Auditorium.
Our schedule moving forwards is:
On May 25 th SpinDrift Street was back! With Garth
Bowen, Randy Shepherd and Charlie Veaudry, we
were not disappointed. The Auditorium was filled
with many people dancing and enjoying great music.
There were many regulars, but also new people came to our
dance. Many commented that they loved the atmosphere and
our dancing floor and are planning to come back again.
Some people who come to our monthly dances were
commenting that it will be good if we have also some foods
available for them to purchase.
We listened and ordered locally made fresh Coastal Crust Pizza.
So leave some space in your tummy and try some delicious
pizza at our next dance.
On June 22 nd we will welcome back Blue Western, with Mike
Evans, Warren Allan, Archie MacLean, Ken Gustafson and
Garth Bowen. They are known to play country classic from
Merle, Waylon, Dwight, Maverick and more.
It will be again a good time to get together with your friends
and have a fun evening listening and dancing to tunes that we
all know. I have to say that we are so fortunate to have such a
beautiful facility in SSAC to hold our monthly dances.
There will be one more fun evening happening in June. Friday
June 7 th we are having the Line Dance Workshop and Dance.
The beginners’ lessons will be from 6:30 to 7:30 and then we
beverages to purchase.
Many thanks to everyone who comes to SSAC dances for your
Robert MacGregor Ronald
September 2, 1950 - May 1, 2024
Rob did not “go gentle into that
good night”. Although he raged
against his diagnosis for the past
year, he passed peacefully and
was grateful to be able to choose
where and when to say goodbye
to his loved ones. The sound of
bagpipes, played by a family friend,
accompanied him on his journey, as he requested.
Rob was a proud Scot who moved to Canada with
his parents, Bill and Jane, when he was four. He
graduated from Kitsilano High and was a bus driver
with BC Hydro/Transit then worked in maintenance
with Coast Mountain Bus Co. until his retirement. He
had lived with his wife Toni on the Sunshine Coast
since 2000, in Davis Bay for the past eight years.
He was a familiar sight in Davis Bay walking the
seawall. The dogs will be missing him – he always had
treats at the ready. He was an animal lover and lived
with many pets over the years. He had other loves,
swimming at the Aquatic Centre and friendships
made there, his garden, travelling, reading, singing,
and brushing up on his general history knowledge. He
was a great (armchair) Jeopardy contestant.
In recent years he enjoyed volunteer work with the
Bargain Barn, the Book Faire and was also a travel
ambassador on the ferries. He was a 32 degree
Ancient Freemason. He was a loyal and trusted friend
to many. Known as “the talker”, he never hesitated to
chat with anyone and often found common ground.
Rob was a good man. He will be missed by his wife
Toni, children Sarah and Chris, and grandson James.
He leaves many loved family members and friends in
the new world and old.
Friends and family who were staying close and
supportive. In his final days he was so happy to visit,
reminisce, and have a wee dram of Scotch with many
visitors, as he wanted. Hug your loved ones. There
will be no service as he requested.
