Residents still waiting as
repairs to street delayed
• By Dylan Smits
WORK TO reopen a Lyttelton
street has been delayed after being
closed at one end for nearly two
years.
Ross Pde residents are frustrated
by what they consider another
broken promise from the city
council which told Bay Harbour
News in February a retaining wall
at the site would be finished by
this month.
Ken Claydon said a city council
letter last week informed residents
of a delay in designing the
retaining wall and road repair,
which will only be completed this
month, with construction starting
about the end of the year.
“They’re full of it, because it’s
been two years for a simple retaining
wall,” said Claydon.
Claydon and his partner Kathy
Bessant have continued to deal
with numerous inconveniences on
their “truck-wide” street since part
of the road slipped down a slope
in July 2022 after heavy rain.
The street is closed at the Ross
Tce entrance.
“Deliveries are still a problem.
It’s really hard getting in and out
if you’re not a capable backer,” said
Claydon.
FRUSTRATED: Ross Pde residents Ken Claydon and Kathy Bessant at the Jacksons Rd
entrance to their street. They want to see the city council make progress on the reopening
which has been delayed until the end of the year.
As far as Claydon can tell, no
city council staff or contractors
have visited the street recently
and there have been no obvious
changes at the site.
“When we had our own
council (Banks Peninsula District
Council) it would have been done
immediately after the slip.”
Council city streets maintenance
manager Steve Guy said
“the work has been delayed due
to several issues which have now
been resolved’’.
He said this was later than the
city council hoped, “due to the
design phase taking longer than
expected’’.
Guy did not respond to questions
from Bay Harbour News
about what the issues which
caused the delay were..
Guy said a retaining wall was
necessary to make the road safe,
after which remediation and
repair work will be carried out at
the slip site.
“We’re expecting to have
detailed design on the construction
project completed at the
beginning of June and from there,
subject to approval, construction
will start in late 2024.”
Quotes sought for upgrades
to Little River Domain
• By Dylan Smits
PROPOSED upgrades to the
Little River Domain will require
about $180,000 in city council
funding.
City council staff have
encouraged the Awa-iti Reserve
Committee to get exact costings
on three key projects at the
domain.
The Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū
Banks Peninsula Community
Board also advised the reserve
committee to get quotes for the
projects when it accepted the
committee’s triennial plan at its
May meeting.
Reserve committee chair
Dean White is now seeking
quotes from contractors and
funding options in addition to
the city council.
The committee’s first priority
is the repair and maintenance of
the heritage tennis pavilion.
An initial estimate by the
committee last month put the
cost at $30,000.
“After some neglect over the
years it is in need of repairs to
ensure its longevity. The funds
requested will be used to prevent
further decline in the state of
UPGRADE: The Awa-iti Reserve Committee has requested
city council funding for three projects at the Little River
Domain. It wants to repair the heritage tennis pavilion,
replace field lights and install information boards.
the building including weather
board repairs, ensuring the
building is weather tight and
painting,” said White.
White said the pavilion
would be a community asset
once repaired, and could help
reinvigorate the disestablished
tennis club. He hopes to have
the pavilion repaired by next the
end of next year.
The committee is also requesting
funding for new field lights
at the domain.
“The current field lights are
outdated and inefficient, and the
addition of new lights would not
only enhance the safety
and security of the area for
sports training, but could also
provide a necessary landing
zone for emergency medical
helicopters,” White said.
He believed the Banks Peninsula
rugby and netball clubs
would benefit from brighter
lighting during evening trainings.
The committee estimates
replacement lights would cost
about $150,000.
“The lights are a long-term
project, a good to have not a
must have. Unlike the pavilion,
which is wasting away.”
The committee also wants
funding for information boards
around the domain, explaining
the history of the area, the pavilion
and the nearby library.
The estimated cost is about
$5000.
“I believe that investing in
these projects will not only
preserve our heritage and
enhance our domain but
also contribute to the overall
health and well-being of our
community,” White said.
by Dai Henwood
A deeply moving and profoundly uplifting story about living with joy,
even in the face of adversity. ‘Part memoir and part masterclass in
finding hope and joy in the face of unthinkable challenges. This isn’t a
book about cancer, it’s a book about living’ – Jaquie Brown
Dai Henwood wanted to be a comedian even before he knew what a
comedian was. He always knew there was something special in being
able to make people laugh.
Over a 25-year career, the much-loved Kiwi entertainer and TV host
has won every major comedy award in New Zealand. But in January
2023, Dai shared publicly that three years earlier he had been
diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer.
Perhaps the ultimate teacher for what really matters, Dai’s incurable
cancer has shown him a new way of living that embraces small
moments of perfection and cherishes things we often overlook.
As well as showing us how laughter can be a wonderful medicine –
Wrong place, wrong time
for fire-lighting youngsters
• By Dylan Smits
A GROUP of youngsters could
not have picked a worse place to
try light fires – behind the Akaroa
Fire Station.
They were spotted playing with
matches and setting patches of
grass on fire in a bush area of
Stanley Park.
Four firefighters who had been
watching from the station told
them to ‘knock it off’.
“They were bored basically,
but it was a really stupid thing to
do,” said chief
fire officer Mark
Thomson.
He said there
is a large amount
of residential
property
bordering Stanley
Park which could
have been put at
risk if a large fire
started.
The crew spent about 30
Mark
Thomson
minutes inspecting the nearby
manuka trees for burns and
doused small areas which the
youngsters had ignited with the
matches.
“We then just put a thermal
camera on to make sure
everything was put out properly,
INTERRUPTED: Four Akaroa volunteer firefighters stopped
kids from lighting fires with matches in Stanley Park on
Sunday.
because manuka is very
flammable,” Thomson said.
He said people playing with
matches or attempting to light
fires was a major concern.
“Especially when there’s houses
near the manuka and manuka is
very flammable.”
Thomson said given February’s
damaging Port Hills fires, it was
everyone’s responsibility to be fire
safe regardless of age.
Artist’s cathedral window tribute
• By Dylan Smits
A LITTLE RIVER artist’s rusted
interpretation of the Christ
Church Cathedral window
symbolises the city’s rebirth, and
will feature in a charity art show
which starts on Friday.
Jane Downes’ Steel Rose Window
uses the circular mandala
art form of the original window
which represents the post-earthquake
recovery journey back to
peace and normalcy for Christchurch.
“I use the mandala form
in many of my works as the
perfect geometry gives a
sense of calm, balance and
harmony,” Downes said.
She often rusts her work,
which in this case represents
the city’s transformation
since the earthquakes.
“It can be interpreted as
a historical message about the city,
how things have transformed over
time with the recovery.”
Proceeds from the Ferrymead
Rotary Club Art Show on Friday
and Saturday will help fund the
club’s community initiatives.
These include supporting
students to attend the National
Science and Technology Forum,
providing teaching materials for
the House of Science educational
programme, meals for families
at Ronald McDonald House, and
Bob
Thayer
funds to assist Estuary Fest.
Artists will highlight and sell
their pieces with proceeds split
between them and the club’s
projects.
“It’s a great opportunity to get
your work out there to a different
audience,” said Downes.
Art show co-coordinator
Bob Thayer hopes visitors will
appreciate the range of art
available and the opportunity to
support community initiatives.
Canterbury University students
will also display their
work.
“We’re keen on supporting
youth in the community
as up-and-coming
artists and it gives the
public an opportunity to
buy works at a reasonable
price,” Thayer said.
It will be the first chance
for many of the students
to exhibit and make money off
their art.
The opening night auction will
feature works donated by other
artists including Kathrine Mateer,
Rae Manson, Linda Burns, Jackie
Hancock, Tricia Hewlett and
Lynette Colton.
Entry costs $20 on Friday for
the auction evening, drinks and
nibbles included, from 6-9pm.
A gold coin donation is needed
for the Saturday show which runs
from 9am-4pm.
SCULPTOR: Little River artist Jane Downes’ Steel Rose Window will be auctioned off by the
Ferrymead Rotary Club with some of the proceeds going towards community initiatives.
LAYBY WELCOME
THE HUGELY popular Take a
Kid Fishing will return to The
Groynes in September.
Organisers have announced
the event is back on the
calendar this year, after it was
cancelled in 2023.
Said Kids Fishing Trust
trustee Dave Denton: “We
are thrilled to bring back the
Take a Kid Fishing event to
Christchurch.
“Despite the setbacks of last
year, we remain committed
to our mission of creating
memorable experiences that
inspire a lifelong love of fishing
and conservation in our
youth.”
Unforeseen challenges led
to last year’s community event
being cancelled.
On Facebook, the group
said late notice from North
Canterbury Fish & Game that
release of hatchery-reared
commercial origin salmon
into The Groynes would not be
approved under their revised
national policy, which had led
to the cancellation.
Denton said this year’s
event promised to be a day of
fun, learning, and bonding
between generations.
“Fuelled by the support of
our sponsors, volunteers and
the local community, we have
redoubled our efforts to make
this year’s event bigger and
better than ever before.”
Take a Kid Fishing will be
held on Sunday, September 29.
Denton said the day was
designed to introduce children
to the joys of fishing while
fostering a deeper appreciation
for our natural environment.
“From casting lessons to
tackle demonstrations, our
experienced volunteers will be
on hand to provide guidance
and encouragement every step
of the way. Free loan fishing
equipment is available.
“In addition to the fishing
activities, attendees can
look forward to educational
sessions, conservation, and live
demonstrations, throughout
the day. Families are
encouraged to pack a picnic
and make a day of it, enjoying
the scenic beauty of the
Groynes while making lasting
memories together.”
He invited families across
Christchurch to cast lines,
reel in some fun, and create
unforgettable moments on the
water.
is so beautiful. I was in
shock when I first got out here.
I’ve never seen anything like it in
my life,” said Simpson.
The footballers plan to run free
weekly sessions at the Diamond
Harbour Rugby Club, with individual
trainings also available.
They want to give kids passionate
about football the opportunity
to excel.
“We both were speaking
about how to give back our
knowledge and experience of
what we’ve learned in Germany
to the younger generation,” said
Simpson.
In Germany, Simpson played
for teams including Fortuna
Köln and Gingichashvili for
Phönix Lübeck.
SKILLS: Now living in Diamond Harbour, Nomads players Nick Simpson (left) and Robert Gingichashvili are offering free
kids coaching and mentoring services. The pair used to play professional football in Germany.
However, playing football
in New Zealand has required
adapting to a different style.
“In Germany and Europe, it’s a
bit more physical and tactical. I’d
say Kiwis are very, very athletic
and fit, so that changes the
football,” said Simpson.
Their aim is for the Nomads to
qualify for the National League
championship, which takes the
top two teams in the Southern
League.
They also hope to be mentors
as well as coaches to interested
youngsters.
“Football has always been
my passion and pride, and I’ve
wanted to be a professional
footballer since I was six. We
want to help guide them, not
only on the pitch but off the
pitch,” said Simpson.
Gingichashvili believes his
experience in a range of football
clubs will be helpful for coaching.
“I trained from amateur football
to professional football all by
myself. I don’t want other kids
to be in the same position where
they don’t know what to do or
who to ask about advancing.”
Throughout their football
careers, Simpson and
Gingichashvili have faced the
challenges of harsh coaches and
rejections.
“That stuff used to affect me
a lot when I was younger, so if I
can help these kids bounce back
and get over mental obstacles,
that would be really rewarding,”
said Simpson.
The drive to Christchurch for
training is worth it.
“We would rather drive the
50 minutes than live in the city.
We just love it here so much,”
Simpson said.
sessions can contact Simpson on
Premium CX-90 joins Mazda’s ranks
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
MAZDA HAS launched a twopronged
attack on our medium
and large SUV market with its
CX-60 and CX-90, a couple of
genuine standouts that should
have their rivals worried.
The CX-90 is a worthy flagship
that’s wider, longer, and more aggressively
proportioned than any
current Mazda. Joining Mazda’s
respected SUV range, these two
are the first products to launch
off Mazda’s new Large Product
platform, bringing fresh new designs
paired with highly efficient,
electrified power trains.
Both the CX-60 and the CX-
90 are the most important new
models for Mazda in a generation.
Easily the largest and most imposing
model is the highly specified
$92,990 CX-90 Takami inline
six being evaluated here, amidst
claims about it using less fuel and
producing fewer emissions from a
fair lump of an engine.
The CX-90 is offered exclusively
with Mazda’s most powerful
production engine ever – a 3.3L
inline six-cylinder motor featuring
48V mild-hybrid assist technology.
Engines of this type and size are
almost a throwback to the 1980s
and 1990s, to the large Ford and
Holden Aussie sixes back then.
Of course those motors and this
newcomer have absolutely nothing
in common, apart from similar
engine capacities.
The CX-90 motor is a totally different
beast, with 254kW of power
and heaps of low speed heft thanks
to 500Nm of torque.
Not surprisingly it’s easily outpointed
in just about every direction
on the performance compass
by this mighty new sophisticated
and refined six. It’s a highly accomplished
and well-crafted
motor, and a class standout for
smoothness and refinement that
not only equals, but also betters a
number of more costly rivals.
This is one of the most relaxing,
yet responsive, luxury SUVs I have
driven in the $100k price bracket,
with excellent low-speed throttle
response and pulling power.
This new generation motor has
Ratings out of 10: Performance 8; Handling 7; Build Quality
8; Comfort 8; Passenger and Load Space 8; Value for
money 8; Road test avg consumption 10.2L /100km; Safety
– ANCAP crash rating 5 star.
Overall points out of 10: 8
a new polished gear-changing
companion in the form of a freshly
developed 8-speed automatic.
That’s two extra ratios than the
long serving 6-speed automatic
that’s still a mainstay of the
current Mazda range.
The CX-90 Takami offers voluminous
amounts of people and
load space and seven-seat versatility.
Mazda have got the luxury
detailing right with a 12-speaker
Bose surround sound system, 360
View Monitor camera system plus
Adaptive LED Headlights with
glare-free high beam. Black Nappa
leather trim with heated and ventilated
front seats and bright roof
rails give the CX-90 a good nudge
even further up Quality St.
Mazda i-Activsense safety
throws an all-encompassing security
blanket around the vehicle’s
occupants, with 10 airbags radar
cruise control and blind spot
monitoring with vehicle exit warning
function. The system isn’t done
there, with a driver fatigue monitoring
camera and a lane-keep
assist with departure warning.
For its size and weight, body roll
is well disciplined and managed
even when travelling briskly over
undulating roads.
The all-wheel drive system
brings commendable stickability
and tenacity to the road holding
and handling party.
Mazda sets a high benchmark
for consistently communicative
and nicely weighted steering, and
this vehicle delivers.
I admire how the CX-90 intelligently
blends exceptional luxury,
space, pace, ride and road holding,
to create one of the most convincing
large premium luxury sevenseat
SUVs on our market.
