returns after snag 

THE HUGELY popular 

Take a Kid Fishing will return 

to The Groynes in September. 

Organisers have announced 

the event is back on the calendar 

this year, after it was cancelled 

in 2023. 

Said Kids Fishing Trust 

trustee Dave Denton: “We are 

thrilled to bring back the Take 

a Kid Fishing event to Christchurch. 

“Despite the setbacks of last 

year, we remain committed 

to our mission of creating 

memorable experiences that 

inspire a lifelong love of fishing 

and conservation in our youth.” 

Unforeseen challenges led to 

last year’s community event being 

cancelled. 

On Facebook, the group said 

late notice from North Canterbury 

Fish & Game that release 

of hatchery-reared commercial 

origin salmon into The Groynes, 

which would not be approved 

under their revised national policy, 

had led to the cancellation. 

Denton said this year’s event 

promised to be a day of fun, 

learning, and bonding between 

generations. 

“Fuelled by the support of 

our sponsors, volunteers and 

the local community, we have 

redoubled our efforts to make 

this year’s event bigger and better 

than ever before.” 

Take a Kid Fishing will be 

held on Sunday, September 29. 

Denton said the day was 

designed to introduce children 

to the joys of fishing while 

fostering a deeper appreciation 

for our natural environment. 

“From casting lessons to 

tackle demonstrations, our 

experienced volunteers will be 

on hand to provide guidance 

and encouragement every step 

of the way. Free loan fishing 

equipment is available. 

“In addition to the fishing 

activities, attendees can 

look forward to educational 

sessions, conservation, and live 

demonstrations throughout the 

day. Families are encouraged to 

pack a picnic and make a day 

of it, enjoying the scenic beauty 

of The Groynes while making 

lasting memories together.”

Christchurch to cast lines, 

reel in some fun, and create 

unforgettable moments on the 

water.

New facility a welcome 

addition to high school 

PAPANUI HIGH School’s new 

science and maths block has 

finally come into fruition after 

five years. 

The block, named Tuke, 

opened last week after being in 

development since 2019. It has 

22 classrooms, with each room 

expected to hold 30 students. 

The block was named and 

blessed by Ngāi Tūāhuriri. Tuke 

is Māori for measurement of 

length and distance. As both 

aspects are important for science 

and mathematics, it was deemed 

an appropriate name for the 

block. 

Principal Robert Gilbert said 

the opening of the block was 

a momentous occasion for the 

school, and students are “elated” 

to be using it. 

“Every single student gets to 

go through that building, so it’s 

lifted the students’ sense of connection 

with their learning and 

they’re very proud of the new 

space.” 

Gilbert said the teachers felt 

the same way. 

“To have a state-of-theart 

facility for science and 

mathematics is just brilliant.”

Bridge 

repairs a 

joint effort 

THE REPAIRS to a pedestrian 

overbridge in Strowan will be 

completed within a matter of 

weeks. 

The Hartley Ave overbridge 

has been closed due to safety 

concerns, and is acknowledged by 

the city council as a vital and safe 

route for many Strowan families. 

The $44,500 repairs are funded 

by the city council and the Ministry 

of Education, an agreement 

that was reached in the weeks 

leading up to the repairs commencing.

King’s Birthday Honours 

list 

Meri Gibson 

Fendalton resident Meri Gibson 

has been made an Officer of the 

New Zealand Order of Merit 

(ONZM) for services to dragon 

boating and breast cancer 

awareness. 

Gibson is a leading figure in the 

sport of dragon boating as a participant, 

coach, and administrator 

in New Zealand and internationally, 

with a focus on the participation 

of breast cancer survivors. 

Gibson joined the Abreast 

of Life (ABOL) dragon boat 

team made up of breast cancer 

survivors in 2006. She has held 

numerous roles within the club 

including president. 

In 2007, she was instrumental 

in establishing the Aoraki Dragon 

Boat Association, the sport’s governing 

body for the South Island. 

She was president from inception 

until 2017 and was appointed its 

first life member in 2018. 

In 2008, she became a board 

member of the New Zealand 

Dragon Boat Association and was 

chair until 2018. 

In 2009 she was a founding 

member of the Oceania Dragon 

Boat Federation. 

She was appointed in 2014 as 

a member of the International 

Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission, 

and subsequently as global 

president in 2018. During her 

leadership of the commission, 

membership has grown 50 per 

cent to about 15,000 paddlers 

from 39 countries. 

Gibson was named captain 

of the New Zealand Black 

Dragons senior B women’s 

team at the Dragon Boat World 

Championships in 2019, and 

was chef de mission for the New 

Zealand Black Dragons campaign 

at the Dragon Boat World 

Championships in 2023.

A career in health governance has 

seen Strowan’s Jane Cartwright 

made a Member of the New Zealand 

Order of Merit (MNZM). 

Cartwright has served the community 

for many years as a chair 

and director in health, disability 

and education, in both paid and 

unpaid roles, prioritising people 

on the margins who find it difficult 

to access health services. 

Cartwright is a respected senior 

leader in non-government organisations, 

district health boards, 

primary health organisations and 

local government. 

While with Healthlink South 

CHE in the 1990s, she oversaw the 

closure of Sunnyside Hospital and 

opening of Hillmorton Hospital, 

a specialist psychiatric/mental 

health service provider. She oversaw 

the 1999 closure of Templeton 

Hospital, and the movement of 

residents into the community or 

into Brackenridge Estate. 

As board chair of Brackenridge 

Services from 2013, she has led 

major improvement in services 

provided to people with intellectual 

disabilities.

Reminder: Don’t bin your batteries 

REPEATED FIRES across the 

city’s kerbside recycling service 

have prompted a reminder to 

dispose of common household 

batteries correctly to keep these 

potentially hazardous items out 

of rubbish and recycling – and 

stop fires from occurring. 

The reminder comes after 

firefighters battled a blaze at the 

Eco-Drop on Parkhouse Rd last 

week. Fire and Emergency NZ 

said the fire was reported just 

before 2.30am on Tuesday. 

The blaze at 

the transfer 

station and 

recycling centre 

was “well 

involved” and 

four crews were 

needed to bring 

it under control.

year there have 

been 13 fires

tonnes of household batteries out 

of rubbish and recycling trucks

“It is free to dispose of most 

common unwanted household 

batteries safely through the 

scheme and we really encourage 

people to use this,” McNeil said. 

If you have a device such 

as a vape where the battery is 

embedded or difficult to remove, 

it can be taken to one of three 

council EcoDrop resource 

recovery centres, located at Styx 

Mill, Metro Pl and Parkhouse 

Rd, along with one at Mitre 10 

Papanui. 

“Batteries and any items containing 

batteries such as vapes, 

electronic devices or tools don’t 

go in kerbside bins. 

“If put in wheelie bins, batteries 

can become damaged and cause 

a fire, potentially harming members 

of the public,” McNeil said. 

“They contain numerous 

components that are bad for the 

environment and when not use 

they can deteriorate and become 

hazardous. 

“Collecting batteries before 

they deteriorate means they can 

be recycled appropriately, saving

Suspected

THE NEW Brighton hot pools are 

closing for a week for unscheduled 

repair work. 

He Puna Taimona will close its 

doors from Monday to Sunday, 

June 23. The closure will allow 

contractors to inspect and fix a 

suspected leaking pipe underneath 

the pools. 

The city council expects to 

reopen the facility on Monday, 

June 24.

unavoidable, but it will ensure

The facility offers five heated

Community feedback sought 

on upgrading Marine Pde

TWO OPTIONS for upgrading 

a section of New Brighton’s 

beach-front street are being put 

to the community for feedback. 

The New Brighton community 

asked the city council for road, 

safety, and accessibility improvements 

on Marine Pde between 

Hawke St and Bowhill Rd. 

Options have been developed 

alongside the Waitai Coastal- 

Burwood-Linwood Community 

Board and residents can now 

select their preference. 

The first option, which is 

expected to cost $4 million, 

includes an asphalt surface 

between Hawke St and the New 

Brighton Surf Club, and improved 

safety for pedestrians at 

the Hawke St intersection. 

This option will result in the 

loss of around 18 car parks. 

The second option, with an 

estimated cost of $4.5 million, 

includes a chipseal surface, safe 

speed platforms with pedestrian 

crossing points, and painted 

cycle lanes. 

This option would see the loss 

of about 115 car parks to make 

room for the proposed painted 

cycle lanes. 

City council transport planning 

and delivery manager Jacob 

Bradbury said the main difference 

between the two options 

was the type of road surface. 

“Because a chipseal surface 

isn’t as expensive as asphalt, for 

a similar budget we can include 

additional upgrades like cycle 

lanes,” he said. 

“We really want the community 

to let us know what they 

would prefer, to help inform the 

community board’s decision.” 

Both options also include replacing 

the kerb and gutter from 

Lonsdale St to 142 Marine Pde 

with a flat gutter, replacing the 

pedestrian refuge island at the 

entrance to the New Brighton 

Surf Club, and installing a zebra 

crossing on Marine Pde near the 

intersection of Hawke St. 


The project will be funded by 

the Christchurch Regeneration 

Acceleration Fund (CRAF), a 

Government fund for transport 

projects.

IT’S ALMOST time for dog owners to 

register their furry friends. 

Dog registration notices will arrive in 

residents’ mailboxes by the middle of June. 

“This is slightly later than usual, but we 

want to assure dog owners that their pups 

paperwork is on its way,” said city council 

animal services manager Lionel Bridger. 

Owners must pay their dog’s registration 

by June 30 for responsible dog owners 

(RDO) and normal dog owners by July 

31. Owners who fail to register their dog 

could face a $300 fine. 

“Registration fees mean we can provide 

things like free microchipping to all 

dogs in Christchurch, free education 

programmes, dog parks, 24/7 dog control 

and our animal shelter,” said Bridger. 

“We also have our RDO status, which 

recognises good and responsible pooch 

owners by discounting their fee.” 

To apply for an RDO status, apply 

online from August 1 to qualify for the 

discounted rate next year. 

Dog registrations are renewed each 

year and are valid from July 1 through to 

June 30. 

Registration fees can be paid online, at 

a city council customer service centre, or 

by calling 941 8999 and paying over the 

phone. 

If dog owners do not receive a form by 

July 1 they should contact the city council 

on 941 8999.

Citrus flavours to bring the sunshine

As the weather gets cooler, the 

season for citrus fruits is fast 

approaching, offering a fantastic 

and fresh respite from the often 

heavier and more bland winter 

seasonal foods. I’ve made the 

most of these zesty fruits in this 

citrus treat that can bring some 

much needed sunshine to the 

darker months. 

Orange, lime and 

raspberry cake with zesty 

cream cheese icing and 

orange-lime curd (gf) 

Ingredients 

2 oranges (or 5x mandarins) 

2 limes 

1 ¼ cups caster sugar (250g) 

2 ½ cups ground almonds (250g) 

1 tsp baking powder 

6 eggs, lightly beaten 

1 cup frozen raspberries 

Instructions 

1. First, wash and dry your 

oranges and limes then place in 

a saucepan filed with water over 

a medium heat. Bring to a gentle 

simmer and cook for about 40 

minutes, until the skin of both 

fruits is soft. Drain and allow to 

cool. 

2. Heat the oven to 160°C and 

butter and line a 20cm spring 

form cake tin. 

3. In a blender or food 

processor, blend the citrus until 

smooth then add the remaining 

ingredients (except raspberries), 

blending until fully combined. 

You may need to scrape down 

several times. 

4. Pour the batter into your 

prepared cake tin then dot with 

the frozen berries, pushing them 

into the batter if necessary. Bake 

for about 50 minutes until set in 

the middle. Allow to cool fully in 

the tin before turning out. 

5. Once fully cooled, top with 

zesty cream-cheese icing, orange 

and lime curd, freeze dried 

raspberries and decorate with 

edible flowers. 

Orange and lime curd 

Ingredients 

Zest and juice of 3 oranges 

Zest and juice of 3 limes 

1 cup of white sugar 

4 large eggs 

115g cold butter, cut into small 

pieces 

Instructions 

1. Zest the oranges and limes first, 

then juice them using a citrus 

juicer or squeeze by hand. 

2. In a medium-sized heatproof 

bowl, combine the orange juice, 

lime juice, orange zest, lime zest, 

and sugar. Mix until the sugar is 

mostly dissolved. 

3. In a separate bowl, lightly 

beat the eggs. Then, add the 

beaten eggs to the juice and sugar 

mixture, whisking continuously 

until well combined. 

4. Place the bowl over a pot 

of simmering water, making 

sure the bottom of the bowl 

does not touch the water. Cook 

the mixture, stirring constantly, 

until it thickens enough to coat 

the back of a spoon. This should 

take about 10-15 minutes. The 

curd will continue to thicken as 

it cools. 

5. Once the curd has thickened, 

remove it from the heat. Stir 

in the butter pieces a few at a 

time, ensuring each piece is fully 

melted and incorporated before 

adding the next. 

6. For an extra smooth curd, 

you can strain it through a finemesh 

sieve to remove the zest and 

any pieces of cooked egg. 

7. Pour the curd into clean 

jars or containers. Allow it to 

cool to room temperature before 

covering and store in the fridge 

for up to 2 weeks. 

Zesty cream-cheese icing 

Ingredients 

250g cream cheese, softened 

100g softened butter 

3 cups (375g) sifted icing sugar 

Zest of 2 limes 

1 tsp vanilla extract 

Instructions 

1. Ensure the cream cheese and 

butter are both softened to room 

temperature. 

2. In an electric mixer with the 

whisk attachment, beat the cream 

cheese and butter until smooth 

and creamy. 

3. Gradually add the sifted 

icing sugar, beating on low speed 

until well combined and creamy. 

Increase speed and whip for 3-5 

minutes until light and airy. For 

an extra smooth icing, replace the 

whisk attachment with paddle 

attachment and beat at a low 

speed for another 5 minutes. 

4. Fold in the lime zest and 

vanilla extract until evenly 

distributed then ice your cake.

Hybrid CRV RS a premium performer 

HONDA HAS entered rarefied 

air territory with a premium 

hybrid version of its new 

CRV SUV, complete with a 

breathtaking $67,000 price sticker 

making it the most expensive 

CRV ever sold here. 

Two of the three models on 

offer for our market are fitted 

with the energised 140kW 

1.5-litre turbocharged petrol 

engine from the previous CRV. 

It delivers cameo performances 

in the price leading $53,000 fiveseat 

AWD, and Sport seven-seat 

$57,000 and the 2WD Sport we 

road tested earlier this year. The 

undoubted jewel in the CRV 

crown is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder 

hybrid reserved for the range 

topping $67,000 RS model that’s

This two-motor hybrid set-up 

has the deep reserves of torque 

that provide the ideal stage 

to deliver effortless all-round 

driving performance. 

Disappointingly, AWD is off 

the menu for now in the 7-seat 

Sport and RS hybrid. 

The hybrid system comprises 

two compact electric motors 

connected to a 1.5-litre turbo 

petrol engine, and a lithium-ion 

battery for a combined power 

output of 135kW and 315Nm of 

torque at just 2000rpm. 

It offers a smooth, responsive 

and refined driving experience, 

although this tapers off on the 

open road, where the vehicle is 

working harder.

8; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 8; Styling 6; Value 

for money 6; Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating.

The hybrid system has plenty 

of appeal with its deft balance 

between power and torque to 

master our undulating roads. 

Around town there is plenty to 

like about its nippy performance, 

and tidy fuel economy. A muchimproved 

constant variable 

transmission (CVT) is a good fit 

with the hybrid powertrain, and 

somehow they seem made for 

each other. 

This sixth generation CR-V 

is longer and wider than before 

with more cabin and load 

carrying real estate. One of the 

more impressive growth areas 

is the extra 16mm worth of 

legroom. 

The RS carries its newly 

anointed premium luxury SUV 

status with ease, underlined 

by the extensive use of quality 

materials and plastics throughout 

the cabin. 

Heading an exhaustive 

manifesto of luxury features is 

leather seating ,a power operated 

sunroof, wireless Apple CarPlay/ 

Android Auto viewed on a 

nine-inch display, and wireless 

charging. 

There are a couple of glaring 

omissions from a features list 

that seemingly had every base 

covered. One is the absence of 

a head-up display and the other 

retracting exterior mirrors. 

I would have expected both 

in an SUV such as this that’s 

recently taken up residence in 

this lofty price bracket. 

The CRV uses the latest version 

of Honda’s excellent Sensing 

safety system. Torso airbags have 

been added to complement the 

rear curtain airbags. 

Like the 7-seat CRV we put 

through its paces recently, the 

RS runs with the same comfort 

orientated suspension tune. 

Generally, body roll is well 

managed, helped along in that 

department by the new CRV’s 

extended length and increased 

width. 

To its credit, the suspension 

reacts decisively to effectively 

counter sudden and unexpected 

deviations in the road and oozes 

competence and composure. 

As commendable as those 

attributes are, it’s never going 

to cement the CRV a place 

alongside the very top ride and 

road-holding luminaries in the 

mid-sized SUV class. However, 

it’s not that far off, and with 

further suspension fettering and 

finessing it could break into this 

elite group.
