The Verde River supports a significant regional 

wildlife population and is one of the few rivers in 

Arizona that flows year-round. Along the 36-milelong 

Verde River Greenway, visitors can explore a 

lush habitat that is exclusive to the Verde Valley. 

The 3,300-foot elevation guarantees comfortable 

temperatures for activities such as hiking, 

canoeing, bird watching, picnicking, fishing, or 

even wading in the cool water.

u The Verde River is the last river in Arizona still 

flowing all year long for its entire length. 

u The Verde River’s riparian zone (Verde River 

Greenway) supports about 2/3 of all lifeforms 

in Arizona.

u The Verde River is 192 miles long, and it is 

boatable with canoes and kayaks for more than 

130 of those miles year-round. 

u The trees and plants along the Verde River form 

the “Frémont cottonwood and Goodding 

willow forest type”, among the most 

threatened forest types in the U.S. Less than 

325,000 acres remain anywhere in the world. 

Vermilion Flycatcher 

u The Verde River supports about 240 species of 

birds and is one of the most diverse and 

productive birding spots in the United States. 

Birds like the Bald Eagle, Common Black Hawk, 

Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Bell’s Vireo, Song Sparrow, 

Great Blue Heron, Belted Kingfisher, and many 

more are “riparian obligates”, meaning they only 

live along a river or other waterway. 

u The Verde River supplies fresh drinking water to 

more than 2 million people in Maricopa County, 

and it is the least expensive water supply in that 

county. 

VERDE LOCALS 

The Verde River provides a rich habitat for a diverse range 

of wildlife, which changes with the seasons. Visitors 

can spot Great Blue Herons, Common Black Hawks, 

and numerous ducks and waterfowl. The river also 

supports a variety of mammals, reptiles, and amphibians 

such as coyotes, raccoons, mule deer, beavers, frogs, 

turtles, snakes, and toads, which depend on it for their 

survival. The Verde River and the riparian corridor 

surrounding it are home to nearly twenty threatened or 

endangered species, including the Yellow-Billed Cuckoo, 

Southwestern Willow Flycatcher, and Lowland Leopard 

Frogs. 

u Thousands of acres of farmland are irrigated by 

the Verde River’s water, both in the Verde 

Valley and downstream.

Hike, bike, horse ride, or off-highway vehicle 

(OHV) trails are plentiful in the Verde Valley. Stop 

by a visitor center or outfitter for local insights 

and recommendations. Let’s go!

Local outfitters offer hikes and horseback, bike, and ATV 

rentals– each are a great way to see less traveled parts of 

the Verde Valley. Outfitters typically provide all necessary 

equipment. See page 52 for outfitters and tour operators. 

Hike the Jail Trail, beginning under the “Gateway to 

the Verde River” archway at the edge of Old Town 

Cottonwood will lead you on a one-mile stroll from the 

town’s former Jail (now Seeds Natural Fiber Clothing 

store) at 1101 N. Main St. in Cottonwood, cutting through 

a dense riparian area which leads you to the Verde River. 

The Jail Trail follows the river for about a mile and then 

offers a choice to continue your hike into Dead Horse 

Ranch State Park or, loop back into Old Town. Rated easy. 

Dead Horse Ranch State Park 

Bike, Hike, or Horse Ride the Lime Kiln Trail (rated 

Moderate/Intermediate) is 14.7 Miles One-Way. The trail 

connects Dead Horse Ranch State Park to Red Rock State 

Park. The trail follows a portion of the historic Lime Kiln 

Wagon Road and, is named after a lime kiln used in the 

late 1800s to heat limestone to separate and recover the 

lime – used in mortar for construction. The Lime Kiln Trail 

provides hikers, equestrians, and mountain bikers with 

stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including 

red rock formations and the Verde River. The trailhead 

is located off Dead Horse Ranch Road. The trail starts 

relatively gentle and becomes more technical as you 

move out of Dead Horse Ranch State Park and into the 

desert country where mountain bikers can pick up the 

pace as the trail provides a clear line of sight through the 

slightly rocky and sparsely vegetated landscape.

DEAD HORSE RANCH STATE PARK 

The park rests along the banks of the Verde River. It 

offers a range of recreational activities and camping, 

as well as cabins. With a phenomenal trail system, the 

park is ideal for wildlife viewing, bird watching, fishing, 

hiking, biking and horseback riding. Equestrian trail 

rides are available in the park. Over 200 species of birds 

have been identified in the immediate confines of the

FORT VERDE STATE HISTORIC PARK 

Experience life through the eyes of a frontier soldier at 

Fort Verde State Historic Park. The fort was a base for 

General Crook’s U.S. Army scouts and soldiers in the 

1870s and 1880s. They were charged with preventing 

Apache and Yavapai Indian uprisings in the late 1800s. 

Its officers’ quarters are open to visitors and a museum 

is located in the old headquarters building. Fee area.

JEROME STATE HISTORIC PARK 

The Douglas Mansion at Jerome State Historic Park is a 

museum devoted to the mining history of Jerome and 

the Douglas family. It features photographs, artifacts, 

minerals, a period room and a “3-D” model of the town 

including the underground mines. There is mining 

equipment on display outside along with a picnic area 

offering a beautiful panoramic view of the Verde Valley.

OAK CREEK CANYON 

The “switchbacks” of Oak Creek Canyon may seem a bit 

unnerving but are well worth the drive to the top. The 

Scenic Overlook offers a fantastic view of the Canyon and 

beyond. There may be Native American hand-made jewelry 

and craft items to pick up as an authentic souvenir. Oak

RED ROCK CROSSING, CATHEDRAL ROCK AND 

CRESCENT MOON RECREATION AREA 

At Crescent Moon Recreation Area, visitors walk along Oak 

Creek and see impressive views with unbelievable photo 

opportunities of Cathedral Rock. Fee area. Sedona Ranger

RED ROCK STATE PARK – CENTER FOR 

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION 

Hiking trails navigate a lush riparian corridor along Oak 

Creek and beautiful vistas of the surrounding red rocks. 

The park acts as an environmental education center with 

visitor center displays, presentations on the area, a butterfly 

and hummingbird garden, and interpretive paths. Guided 

bird walks are available every Wednesday and Saturday 

morning led by rangers and volunteer naturalists. Fee area.

ROCKIN’ RIVER RANCH STATE PARK 

Visit Arizona’s newest State Park! Rockin’ River Ranch 

State Park is a 209-acre park located at the confluence of 

West Clear Creek and the Verde River. This peaceful former 

ranch now provides bountiful recreation opportunities 

like hiking and fishing in the heart of central Arizona. 

Trails wind through a mature mesquite bosque and under 

towering sycamore and cottonwood trees along the banks 

of the Verde River. This scenic riparian area provides rich 

habitat for birds and wildlife like javelina, deer, beaver, 

and otters. The day-use park is now open for visitors on 

Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays in Camp Verde. Fee Area.

SLIDE ROCK STATE PARK 

Slide Rock State Park offers an easy walk along the 

homestead and the flourishing famed Oak Creek apple 

orchard. Continue on to the stairs and trail that leads to Oak 

Creek, where water rushes through natural red rock sluices. 

In the summertime, kids and adults love to ride the water 

down these sluices, sunning themselves afterward on the 

rocks. 928.282.3034. 



Ancient 

Ruins 

Ancient Ruins can be found throughout 

Arizona, but some of the best-preserved cliff 

dwellings are in the Verde Valley. The ancient 

Sinagua culture thrived in the Verde Valley from 

approximately A.D. 600 to A.D. 1400. 

The Sinagua’s legacy includes petroglyphs 

(pecked or scratched images) and pictographs 

(painted images). 

HONANKI RUINS 

Honanki held one of the largest population centers in 

the Verde Valley, primarily occupied from 1130 through 

1280. Consisted of about 60 rooms and a number of 

pictographs. The 700-year-old well-preserved ruins 

and the rock art on the walls are fascinating. Coconino

Montezuma Castle National Monument 

MONTEZUMA CASTLE NATIONAL 

MONUMENT AND MONTEZUMA WELL 

This ancient cliff dwelling dates back to 1150. The 

Castle stands in a cliff recess 100 feet above the valley, 

just 4 miles north of Camp Verde. The Castle is one 

of the most well-preserved cliff dwellings in North 

America. Montezuma Well, a detached unit of the same 

Monument, located about 11 miles north, is a natural 

limestone sinkhole through which 1,500,000 gallons of 

water emerge each day from an underground spring. 

Both places have a short, ⅓ - ½-mile trail to see the 

archaeological remains, as well as a picnic area. Both 

are served by the Visitor’s Center at the Castle. Fee 

area. Open daily at 8am. Located at 2800 Montezuma 

Castle Road off Interstate 17 at exit 289, Camp Verde.

PALATKI RUINS 

Palatki (Hopi for “red house”) is a cliff dwelling 

sheltered in a Supai sandstone overhang, 

constructed by the Southern Sinagua people who 

inhabited the area from approximately 650 to 1300. 

A most outstanding pictograph site, walls display 

art from archaic cultures extending back over 

6,000 years to the work of the Sinagua, the Yavapai, 

and the Apache Tribes of historic times. Coconino 

National Forest near Sedona. For reservations call

TUZIGOOT NATIONAL MONUMENT 

Approximately 800 years ago, this Sinagua pueblo 

was home to the Native American population once 

inhabiting this area. The site is comprised of 42 acres 

including hiking trails (one wheelchair accessible) 

and a complete museum. Visitors can walk through 

the various rooms of the pueblo ruin to view this 

ancient civilization. Images etched in stone help tell 

the tale of daily life. Open daily at 9am. Fee area.

THE CRANE PETROGLYPH HERITAGE SITE 

The Crane Petroglyph Heritage Site is the largest 

known petroglyph site in the Verde Valley and, one 

of the best preserved. The Southern Sinagua rock 

art legacy comprised of 1,032 individual petroglyphs 

on 13 panels at this site is known as the Beaver 

Creek Style. The Crane Petroglyph petroglyphs are 

traced to between A.D. 1150 and 1400. Coconino 

National Forest, 2.8 miles east of the junction of I-17 

and SR 179 on FR 618. Watch for the entrance on 

your right less than one-half mile past the Beaver 

Creek Campground. Fee area. 928.592.0998

The Verde Valley Archaeology Center and Museum 

explores the history of the Hopi Tribe and Yavapai- 

Apache Nation with exhibits of local archaeological

Birding 

The Verde River is home to over 200 migratory 

and resident bird species, making it one of the 

most diverse and productive birding locations in 

the US. 

The Verde Valley boasts several Audubon Important 

Birding Areas (IBAs) such as Lower Oak Creek, Tuzigoot, 

and Camp Verde. These IBAs are located near water and 

attract nesting birds and migratory species that stop in 

the Valley during their seasonal journeys. Spring is the 

peak season for birding, but bird enthusiasts can still 

spot a variety of birds throughout the year in the area’s 

canyons, grasslands, and elevations. Whether walking 

a path, meandering along the riverbank, or hiking up a 

canyon, birdwatchers are sure to catch a glimpse of the

Annual Birding Festivals 

Described as “the friendliest 

birding festival,” the annual

The event takes place on the 

last full weekend of April each 

year and provides a great way to 

experience the growing hobby

the Sedona Hummingbird 

Festival is a must-see event 

during the first weekend 

of August. This is the time 

when Sedona’s hummingbird 

population is at its highest and

Small Towns 

The small towns of the Verde Valley showcase the best of Arizona’s quaint communities. All are within 

a 30-mile radius with an estimated population of 66,000 - each offering visitors a unique experience. 

In the shadows of Mingus Mountain and in the heart of 

the Verde Valley, Cottonwood offers a distinctive historic 

district lined with shops, art galleries, restaurants, and 

tasting rooms on its Main Street. 

History is alive in nearby Clarkdale, whose homes and 

buildings still reflect its early copper smelting heritage. 

Four specialized museums focus on Native American 

cultures, international copper art, the local railroad, and 

town history. 

Cornville/Page Springs offers wineries, tasting rooms, 

and a few wonderful dining options. This area provides 

a relaxed take on some of Arizona’s most pristine highdesert 

scenery. 


Camp Verde, located in the geographic center of Arizona, 

is rich in history and offers a variety of recreation and 

outdoor activities to experience and enjoy. 

A Verde Valley excursion wouldn’t be complete without 

a journey up the hill to Jerome, the “City in the Sky.” 

Once a thriving mining camp of 15,000, Jerome acquired 

“ghost town” status by the 1960s. Today, entrepreneurs 

have restored many of the quaint buildings that cling 

to the mountainside and the town now dishes out artsy 

boutiques and panoramic views in equal measure.

Lake Montezuma/Rimrock & Beaver Creek 

Lake Montezuma/Rimrock is one of the smallest towns in the Verde Valley but, the area offers big attractions for 

outdoor enthusiasts and aspiring archaeologists alike! Located 6 miles north of Camp Verde, off Interstate 17. 

Visit Montezuma Castle and Montezuma Well National Monuments and the The Crane Petroglyph Heritage Site 

– the largest known petroglyph site in the Verde Valley. Fish, play in the creek or birdwatch in Wet Beaver Creek

The City of Cottonwood began as a campground 

and stop-over for travelers to Oak Creek, Beaver 

Creek and Camp Verde. It was one of three main 

crossings over the Verde River. Cottonwood became 

a supplier of fresh produce to the copper miners in 

Jerome in the early years of the 20th century. Today, 

it is the commercial hub of the Verde Valley with a 

growing population of approximately 13,000.

PAGE SPRINGS FISH HATCHERY 

Nestled among the pines of the Coconino National Forest, 

the Page Springs Fish Hatchery offers a cool retreat from 

the desert during hot summer months. The Page Springs 

Hatchery is the largest state-run hatchery producing 

750,000 fish annually to stock Arizona’s lakes, ponds, and 

streams. The Hatchery provides 57% of the stock trout in 

Arizona. 

The Hatchery provides a self-guided tour path and families 

will enjoy the recently completed nature trail bordering 

Oak Creek. Kids of all ages will enjoy the show ponds to 

view the hatchery’s finest and largest trout. Designated by 

the National Audubon Society as an Important Bird Area 

(IBA), the Hatchery is considered the premier birding area 

for the Verde Valley where over 200 bird species have been

Founded in 1912, Clarkdale, with a current population 

of around 5,000, is unique in American history as 

Arizona’s first model company town. A product of the 

City Beautiful movement, Clarkdale housed smelter 

workers of the United Verde Copper Company, owned 

by railroad baron and copper tycoon Senator William A. 

Clark. Today, Clarkdale Historic District, comprising 387

Jerome was at one time the most talked about 

Wild West mining camp in America - it’s now 

listed on the National Historic Register. 

Its population went from 15,000 in its heyday to a “ghost
