Apocalypse book in
running for top award
• By Dylan Smits
A GOVERNORS Bay author will
know in August if her futuristic
young adult novel has won a
category in the New Zealand
Book Awards for Children and
Young Adults.
Melanie Dixon is a finalist in
the best first book and young
adult fiction categories.
“It’s really exciting. Amazing
to be recognised on a list with
famous authors like Tessa
Duder,” she said.
Dixon made the list for her
novel New Dawning.
Set hundreds of years in the
future after devastating sea level
rise, Dixon’s novel tells the story
of a secluded society surviving in
post-apocalyptic Lyttelton.
A work of an illustrator from
Diamond Harbour is also in the
running for an award.
Art tutor Rebecca Gibbs
illustrated Rere Atu Taku Poi! Let
My Poi Fly! by Tangaroa Paul,
which has also been shortlisted
in the best first book category.
Gibbs said the illustrations
were a “labour of love”. She is
pleased a text in english and te
Recreation
land could
rates relief
• By Dylan Smits
TAYLORS MISTAKE bach
owners have been refused rates
relief for a 73ha recreation area
they own, which could prompt
them to sell it.
But they are in talks with the
city council to see if the bach
licence fees they pay could be used
to alleviate the costs of maintaining
the land.
The group owns the block behind
the beach through the Taylors
Bach owner
Malcolm Mc-
Clurg said the
company was
spending about
$15,000 annually
on rates, weed
maintenance for
Malcolm
the land. Without reduced costs, it
may decide to sell.
“It could put a stop to this great
community asset. That would be
a shame.”
A city council spokesperson
said “there is no current scope for
rates relief for this property”.
FIREFIGHTERS called in a
helicopter and four-wheel-drive
vehicle to fight a large scrub fire
in Port Levy which could not be
accessed by road.
A group of nearby road workers
alerted the Diamond Harbour
Volunteer Fire Brigade to the
fire after spotting smoke coming
from a remote farm paddock.
Eight firefighters rushed to the
scene of the 3ha blaze down a dirt
track off Port Levy-Pigeon Bay Rd
about 11.20am last Wednesday.
Chief fire officer Frank Watson
said the area could only be
accessed using the brigade’s fourwheel-drive
vehicle.
He said the cause of the fire
was not suspicious. However, the
size of the fire and the rugged
terrain meant they had to call in
a helicopter to dump monsoon
buckets on the blaze.
“It took 10 minutes just to
get up to the fire. Probably 30
minutes walking. That’s why we
really needed the chopper.”
There was no water available
within 1km, forcing the
helicopter pilot to fly back and
forth from Port Levy to refill the
monsoon bucket.
Firefighters also cut down large
sections of tussock in the area to
slow down the blaze.
The Trevor Crowe Story
TOUGH: Firefighters had to use shovels to create a firebreak
and extinguish the hotspots.
“It was a matter of going
around manually and cutting
those down and then sort of
extinguishing the fire around
them.”
Between driving to the scene
and getting home, the crew spent
about eight hours on the job.
Watson said a bulldozer would
typically be used to smother a fire
of this type, but none could reach
the area.
The crew also had to hand-dig a
firebreak around the perimeter of
the blaze, which stopped it from
spreading further.
The fire crew had to continually
coordinate with the pilot about
which areas were more effective
to dump water on and which were
better for hand tools.
“A lot of people say firefighting
is quite glamorous, but you look
at situations like this and in
reality it’s a lot of hard, physical
work,” Watson said.
A section of native bush next
to the farmland also had to be
protected from the fire.
The crew had to wear masks
to protect themselves from the
smoke.
Watson said Banks Peninsula
was still “extremely dry”. He said
people need to remain cautious
when lighting fires, even though
the area was in an open fire
season.

The Ritual Effect by Michael Norton
The Transformative Power of Our Everyday Actions
In this ground-breaking and inspiring
guide, a renowned Harvard psychologist
demonstrates how turning everyday habits
into rituals can improve our work, our
relationships and our lives. Think of the
quirky traditions that you keep up with
your friends. Or the unusual ways that you
and your family mark special occasions.
These are rituals- practices that are imbued
with symbolic meaning. And they have the
power to turn black-and-white moments
into technicolour. Along the way, Norton
shares stories from sporting superstars
(Serena Williams always bouncing the ball
five times before her first serve) Rituals can
help us to forge winning teams, heal families
experiencing grief and encourage us rise to
challenges, big or small. Now it’s time to
create yours.
The Hazelbourne Ladies Motorcycle and
Flying Club By Helen Simonson
The Hazelbourne Ladies Motorcycle and Flying Club captures
the ambitions, frustrations, and inevitable tragedies
of women and men emerging from the Great War. It is
the summer of 1919 and Constance Haverhill is without
prospects. Now that all the men have returned from the
front, she has been asked to give up her cottage and her job
at the estate she helped to run during the war. While she
looks for a position as a bookkeeper or (horror) a governess,
she’s sent as a lady’s companion to an old family friend
who is convalescing at a seaside hotel. Despite having only
weeks to find a permanent home, Constance is swept up
in the social whirl of Hazelbourne-on-Sea and its colorful
inhabitants, most notably, Poppy Wirrall. But things are
more complicated than they seem in this sunny pocket of
English high society. As the country prepares to celebrate
its hard-won peace, Constance and the women of the club
are forced to confront the fact that the freedoms they gained
during the war are being revoked. This is a timeless comedy
of manners, refreshing as a summer breeze and bracing as
the British seaside.
‘We’re using our
land to provide a
community asset’
• From page 1
They said it does not qualify
for non-rateable status under the
Local Government (Rating) Act,
and the owners and activities do
not meet the requirements of the
city council’s rates remissions
policy.
McClurg said the bach owners
are not surprised by the refusal
of rates relief, but are still
hopeful the city council will
approve the use of the $150,000
in accrued licence fee income to
offset costs.
“Now our approach is going
to be pushing for the use of the
licence money and talking with
council about how to get that
done,” he said.
The 30 bach owners have
debentures and pay rates on
the hilly area behind the beach,
which is popular with walkers,
cyclists and paragliders.
Most expenses come from
rates, weed control, and fence
maintenance. The company’s
biggest challenge is having these
costs with no income.
“We’re using our land to
provide a community asset. So
what we’re hoping to do is see if
the council could assist us in the
costs that occur.”
The city council spokesperson
said no decision has been made
on the use of licence fees or
any other form of city council
support.
The future of the land came
into focus after the decision in
2019 to grant new licences for
35 years to Taylors Mistake bach
owners, who resided on city
council-owned land.
At the start of the decades-long
battle, the bach owners formed
the land company and bought
the block in 1989 from a private
developer as leverage in negotiations
over the licences.
“The original land was bought
with the loans as a back-stop in
case the baches were removed.
It was a bargaining tool with the
council.”
With their licences now secure,
the land company is considering
transitioning from a debenture
holding to a shareholding, meaning
members would become part
owners rather than only loaning
money.
Now surveying bach owners
on their interest, McClurg said
a shareholding could encourage
further development due to
members having more direct
responsibility.
“The tricky issue is if a number
of debenture holders choose not
to become shareholders, we will
have a smaller number of people
having to carry the burden of the
costs.”
McClurg said the use of licence
fees would help in the transition
to a shareholding as bach owners
who take part will likely have a
significant new expense.
Green light for new school, fire station
• By Dylan Smits
THE GO-AHEAD has been
given for city council land in
Diamond Harbour to be sold for
a Maori immersion school and
new fire station.
But how much the land will
be sold to Te Poho o Tamatea
Ltd and Fire and Emergency
New Zealand for is still yet to be
determined.
The sites are on a city councilowned
39ha block bordering
Whero Ave and Hunters Rd,
which has a rateable value of
$5.35 million.
The school is on 8ha block and
fire station on 0.5ha block. A
council spokesperson said the
rateable value of these blocks was
still to be determined, which will
factor into the negotiations.
Concerns over traffic around
the school have been debated
in Diamond
Harbour.
The
community
wants
continued
consultation
with the city
council and
the school
Rangimarie over its traffic
Parata plans.
Takurua Te Pā
board chair
Rangimarie Parata Takurua said
the decision has given school
planners enough assurance
to start developing a detailed
transport plan, which she hopes
will be released by the end of the
year.
“There’s still a lot of design
and master planning work to do
to answer some of the burning
questions that the community
has about access and parking.”
Diamond Harbour Community
Association chair Graeme
Fraser hopes there will continue
to be consistent public engagement
from Te Pā and the city
council.
He said Te Pā’s increased
assurance should not mean less
community consultation.
“I hope that certainty
doesn’t imply there’s no
turning back. We’d like
to think that there’s still
a case to be proven in
terms of the feasibility
and impacts on the local
community.”
A recent survey from
the city council showed
Diamond Harbour
residents were divided on
creating the school, with many
citing traffic concerns.
WE ARE
MOVE A
Parata Takurua said there was
a large amount of work to do
before all residents’ questions can
be answered.
“We will have
milestones along the
way where we will
check in.”
The decision requires
the land to be sold at
market value, with
the three parties now
Graeme Fraser
employing private
valuers to negotiate a
figure.
“It will be rigorously debated,
I’m sure, about what market
Airman Ron out in
labour of love
force for choppers
• From page 1
The story is about gender nonconformity.
Rangi is a boy who
loves doing haka but performing
poi is his favourite, even though
his classmates say it is just for
girls.
When the lead poi performer
falls sick before a school
performance, Rangi has to take
her place.
Dixon and Gibbs say its an
honour that work from the area
is being showcased.
“There are so many talented
people around here and with
us being pretty early on in our
careers, getting recognised is
great,” said Gibbs.
Dixon says living near the
harbour inspires people to write
and illustrate.
“For me, just living down from
where Margaret Mahy used to
live. There’s definitely something
here which encourages creativity.”
The awards ceremony is
in Wellington on August 14.
Category winners receive $8500
and also go into the running for
the Margaret Mahy Book of the
Year, with a further $8500 prize
money.
AIRMAN RON will be back out
in the community fundraising
for Canterbury rescue
helicopters.
But he will not be walking
90km like he did in 2022.
Instead, he will be collecting
funds outside Halswell and
Wigram New Worlds, in
participation with the Westpac
and Roa Mining rescue
helicopters.
Ron Towner gained the
nickname ‘Airman Ron’ two
years ago when he raised $91,000
while walking 90km in the area
around his home before his 90th
birthday. He received national
recognition for his efforts and
appeared on TV show Seven
Sharp.
Ron was inspired to take up
the challenge after one of his
friends noticed him going on
daily walks. She said he looked
like Captain Tom Moore, a
retired British Army officer
who, in 2020, raised more
than £32.79 million (NZD$60
million) for the National Health
Service while walking 100
lengths of his garden before his
GROUND CONTROL:
Airman Ron will be
collecting funds for rescue
helicopters again this year.
100th birthday.
The Canterbury rescue choppers’
latest campaign, which will
be held in August, is called Back
to Base.
The now 91-year-old encourages
retirees to take part.
“I think you need to be doing
something when you’re old,
rather than just sitting around,”
he said.
Participants can choose from
four distances – 9km, 49km,
97km, and 155km – and can
complete their chosen distance
through walking, running, riding
or skiing, all while gaining
sponsors.
The distances reflect the regular
routes the air rescue service
takes around Canterbury.
Back to Base Crew chief Rick
Knight said the challenge is
about getting fit and boosting
mental well-being, while directly
supporting the critical training
and equipment the rescue helicopters
depend on.
“Whether it’s hitting the gym,
the golf course, or the great
outdoors, this challenge is a
chance to push limits and show
creativity.
“Our message is to sign up,
start training, seek sponsorship,
and support the crew to get Back
to Base in August,” Knight said.
Participants who fundraise
more than $100 will receive
a free medal to mark their
achievement.
Ron served for the Royal Air
Force in England from 1948 to
1951.
Surprise plan for huts but
residents still have to go
• By Daniel Alvey and Geoff
Sloan
GREENPARK Huts residents
who will be forced out of their
homes are shocked Ngāi Tahu
will build a facility at the site
after they have gone.
The 32 bach owners were due
to vacate their homes at the end
of this month. But they have
been given a one-year reprieve,
with Ngāi Tahu extending the
date to June 30, 2025.
In 2020, Ngāi Tahu told hut
owners it would not renew their
leases and said people would
have until June 30 this year to
leave and clear the site of any
structures.
In its reasons for ending hut
leases, Ngāi Tahu cited sea level
rise, issues with wastewater
removal and drinking water
supply, and the cultural
significance of the area.
Ngāi Tahu says it will help
with some costs including
project management fees,
asbestos testing, capping of
drinking water bores and the
decommissioning of septic
tanks.
But Bay Harbour News can
reveal Ngāi Tahu plans
to establish a centre of
excellence for mahinga
kai on the site.
Mahinga kai means
‘to work the food’. It
relates to traditional
food gathering practices,
as well as protecting
ecosystems and habitats
species are found in.
Almost all residents were
unaware of the centre until they
were told by Bay Harbour News.
Resident Ross Wilson said the
Ngāi Tahu plan was a double
standard.
“It would be nice to find out a
bit more about that, and we will
in time, but it seems very strange
if they’re going to put that on
here when they’re talking about
NOT IMPRESSED: Greenpark Huts resident Ross Wilson said the Ngāi Tahu plan to build a
mahinga kai centre was a double standard.
sea level rise,” Wilson said.
Resident Don Brown, who is
Ngāi Tahu, found out about the
plan in a meeting with the iwi on
May 26, two days after
the extension was given.
He had asked for a
meeting to discuss his
personal situation, and
how the iwi could help
him relocate to another
home on the lake, not at
Greenpark Huts.
“They offered me
a home occupied
by a former pakeha
fisherman, but it was totally
unsatisfactory.”
Brown said tikanga (custom)
had not been carried out to
remove tapu since a person had
died at the home, and therefore
he could not take it.
It was at that meeting he asked
what the plans were for the
Greenpark Huts land.
He was told it would become a
centre of excellence.
“When my son and I asked
at a meeting with Ngāi Tahu
when can we expect that?
The answer was unknown. Is
there a budget? No.”
Brown has a centuries-old
connection to Te Waihora Lake
Ellesmere, which started well
before Ngāi Tahu arrived in
Canterbury in about 1690.
Brown traces his whakapapa
back to pre-Ngāi Tahu Ngati
Māmoe and Waitaha, iwi which
used the lake as a valuable food
source 400-500 years ago.
He has lived in his bach for
about 30 years.
He uses it as his connection
to Te Waihora Lake Ellesmere and
is regularly fishing the lake and
engaging in mahinga kai.
kai, why not just leave Don
Brown and his hut here.”
Te Taumutu Rūnanga chair
Dr Liz Brown confirmed the
plans for the centre, but did not
respond to questions from Bay
Harbour News about what was
going to be built, when and at
what cost.
Liz Brown is Don Brown’s
second cousin. She also did not
respond to questions about why
the iwi was looking to establish
a centre, given the reasons cited
for the huts’ removal, which
include climate change concerns.
Hut owners were sent a letter
from Ngāi Tahu chief executive
Ben Bateman about the year-long
extension.
“We have heard from a
number of leaseholders that
more time is needed to ensure
leaseholders are well-informed
about their demolition options,”
Bateman said in the letter.
He also said the time would
allow people to get Government
support to find alternative
housing. Ngāi Tahu would
continue discussions with
residents. Brown said the
extension was just dragging out
the inevitable.
“It just gives people false
hope.”
Wilson said the extension has
given people “breathing space”.
“It was a huge relief to the ones
who are still out there. But a lot
of them are saying they (Ngāi
Tahu) are just tormenting
us with another year of
pressure.”
Bach owner Kane Scarrott’s
family has owned a hut since
1953. Scarrott also has a bach of
his own. He said the extra year
makes no difference.
“I’m not going anywhere, there
is no grounds for them to make
us leave,” Scarrott said.
NEWS 19
NZ’s most stolen car drives
higher insurance premiums
• By Mahvash Ikram
SOME PEOPLE are paying
nearly $3000 a year to insure
their Toyota Aqua cars, with
one insurer denying cover
unless the vehicle has an
immobiliser.
The high price was because
the Toyota Aqua is the most
stolen car in the country, data
from three insurance companies
reveals.
Cove Insurance says it is
simply too much of a risk
without an immobiliser.
“That level of risk doesn’t
work for anyone – the customer
having the car stolen, us at
Cove or our other customers
paying higher premiums to
cover it,” the company said.
“We wanted a solution
that would allow people to
keep their cover in place at
a reasonable price and an
immobiliser solves the issue
by dramatically reducing the
risk.”
But that was not enough to
put off drivers from buying
the fuel efficient cars.
For 22-year-old software
engineer Kian Jazayeri, buying
a Toyota Aqua as his first car
WORTH IT: Despite being New Zealand’s most stolen
car, the Toyota Aqua is, for some people, still a good buy.
was a no-brainer.
“In Christchurch it’s very
flat, so it’s basically the best
place for the car and just one
of the fuel savings that comes
from it.
“I’m only filling up fuel like
$80 per month or even like
$80 per month-and-a-half
really.”
He bought it second hand
for $10,000.
But what he saved in fuel,
he paid for in his insurance
premium.
“I’m paying around $250
per month for comprehensive
and theft (insurance). I’m
still wondering whether I
should go with third party instead,
just to save that money,”
he said.
AA Insurance head of motor
claims Beau Paparoa said
the high number of claims
involving Aquas affected the
owners’ premiums.
He said while AA insurance
encouraged its customers to
install security features such
as immobilisers, that would
not reduce the premium.
“Definitely that is one of
many factors that will be
built into considering what
premiums we charge,” said
Paparoa.
“Our premiums are
calculated across a number of
other factors as well. We take
a really close look at what the
full cost of claims are and we
want to make sure that we’re
collecting enough money to be
able to pay for those claims.”
AMI Insurance data also
showed the Toyota Aqua had
been the most stolen car for
two years running.
Favio Nazareno and his
girlfriend bought their Aqua
in 2023. Within 12 months,
their insurance premium went
up by nearly 25 per cent from
$946 to $1180.
The insurance company
told them the increase was
influenced by a range of
factors – including location,
type of car, number and types
of claims.
But Nazareno said those
factors had not changed in the
year he owned the car.
Despite the theft data,
Paparoa said the Toyota Aqua
was a good buy.
“They’re a pretty cool car
actually, economical and the
right price range for a lot of
people.”
TREASURES FROM THE PAST
John Grubb – the accidental arrival
• By Liz Grant
JOHN GRUBB, who arrived in
Ōhinehou Lyttelton in 1848 and
went on to be a true stalwart of the
community, had no plans to settle
there when he left his homeland of
Scotland the previous year.
Several generations later, his
descendants look on his legacy
with great pride. John and his
wife Mary were the great-greatgreat-great-grandparents
of Abbie
Montgomery, pictured here with
her father and daughter. Her links
with Lyttelton are even stronger.
“My maternal great-great-greatgreat-grandfather,
Mathew Lee
Joyce also arrived in Lyttelton
before 1850 and I have no doubt
John Grubb and Mathew Joyce
would have crossed paths all those
years ago.”
Montgomery says it is very
special to her that she has been
able to trace these family links,
and to pass their stories on to
future generations.
John Grubb was born in 1817
in Tayport, Fife in Scotland. As
a young man he was apprenticed
to the shipbuilding trade and in
1847 was a ship’s carpenter on the
barque ‘General Palmer’ sailing
between Melbourne and London.
Badly damaged by storms,
the ship made for Wellington for
repairs but was in such a poor
state it was condemned, stranding
John Grubb literally on the other
side of the world from his home.
These were the days when the
Canterbury Association was
preparing for the arrival of their
settlers. Grubb was contracted
by Captain Joseph Thomas, the
association’s surveyor, to help
build a jetty in Cavendish (later
Erskine) Bay for the association’s
ships.
Many settlers bought land in
England off plans the Canterbury
Association had prepared for
prospective emigrants.
John was the first person to buy
land having already arrived in
New Zealand. On July 1, 1851, he
bought Town Section 45, at what
is now 62 London St, Lyttelton,
for £23. The cottage he built was
the first permanent residence
in Lyttelton and is one of the
oldest surviving houses from that
era of European settlement in
Canterbury.
Grubb wrote to Mary, who was
living back in Dundee, that he
was well paid and “I like the place
well”.
His plan was to establish a
shipbuilding business in Lyttelton.
He arranged for Mary and their
three daughters to sail to New
Zealand on the first Canterbury
Association ship, the ‘Charlotte
Jane’. Mary was to bring more
tools including crosscut saws, an
axe, an adze, steel chisels, a braceand-bit,
and a plane.
By the time the family arrived
on December 16, 1850, John had
built a V-hut for them all to live in.
That tight fit got even tighter with
the arrival of their first son the
following year, also named John.
Fortunately, John senior
had a plan. On the London St
section he built a simple cottage
using rimu and kahikatea for
the weatherboard cladding, and
kauri for the floor. It had a kitchen
and living room downstairs
and two bedrooms upstairs,
accommodated by the highpitched
roof.
Possibly pretty desperate to
leave the V-hut, the family moved
into the cottage even before the
doors and windows had been
fitted. Their first kitchen table was
made of boards laid across biscuit
casks from the ‘Charlotte Jane’.
Between 1853 and 1861, John
and Mary had two more sons and
four daughters. John was also
busy with community projects
and was a foundation member
of the Canterbury Kilwinning
Masonic Lodge No 23.
With now 10 children, the
original cottage desperately
needed to be expanded. Probably
between 1864 and 1868, a new
two-storey addition was built at
the front of the building.
Despite additions and
alterations, Grubb Cottage is in a
relatively original condition, even
down to the light fittings. Mary
Grubb died in Lyttelton in 1886,
John died in 1898, and is buried in
the Lyttelton Anglican cemetery
on Canterbury St. Grubb himself
died in 1898 and is buried next to
his wife.
The Grubb family continued to
own and live in the cottage until
it was sold in 1961. It changed
hands several times before the
Christchurch City Council agreed
to buy it on March 30, 2006.
In recognition of its
architectural significance, it
had been registered in 1996 as
a Category II historic place by
the New Zealand Historic Places
Trust (now Heritage New Zealand
Pouhere Taonga).
The Grubb Cottage Heritage
Trust was established in 2007,
taking on responsibility for care
and conservation of the cottage.
Michael Williams, chair of the
Grubb Cottage Heritage Trust,
says that since 2007, 17,000 people
have visited the cottage, including
many descendants, some coming
from as far away as Scotland.
With thanks to Michael
Williams and Abbie Montgomery
for their contribution to this story.
ADVERTISING FEATURE
A building with high visibility on the main route
into the thriving seaside suburb of Sumner in
Christchurch has come to the market.
Leased to popular hospitality brand Joe’s Garage,
the property is located at 19 Marriner Street, the
gateway into the village and one block back from
the beach.
Investment sales specialist Courtney Doig of
Colliers says the vendors have owned the
property for the past eight years but have
changed their original plans and have decided
to sell at auction on June 27.
“Options within the heart of Sumner village are
rarely available, especially at this entry-level
category. This site enjoys excellent profile and is
in the heart of several new developments.
“It offers numerous opportunities for the astute
investor to either maintain the current set up and
benefit from the established Joe’s Garage business,
consider future repositioning of the modern
improvements, or explore long term redevelopment
options,” Doig says.
Sitting on 569sq m of land, the building is 131sq m.
It was formerly a house but was bought by the Joe’s
Garage franchisor back in 2009 and converted into
the café which is always in high demand.
The vendor says they’ve loved owning the site
but are keen to consolidate now that they are
approaching retirement age.
“It’s a great spot, right in the heart of Sumner.
We’ve loved it. We love the whole vibe of the
restaurant and we’ve always looked after the
building to make sure it’s well maintained.”
Sumner itself has long been one of the most
sought-after residential suburbs in Christchurch
and now the village is undergoing a considerable
transformation.
“There’s a real buzz in the village and a lot of excitement
about the opening of the cinema and other new
commercial and residential developments,” Doig says.
Work is poised to get underway on the first stage
of luxury two and three-bedroom apartments
in a $120 million development on the corner of
Marriner Street and The Esplanade while a $14 million
colonial style complex beside Joe’s Garage, on
the corner of Marriner and Burgess Sts, will feature
12 apartments and townhouses plus three shops.
The cinema is being extensively refurbished and
has been leased to high-end operator Silky Otter.
Around the corner in Nayland Street, the
SuperValue supermarket was recently expanded
to cope with growing demand and a new
hospitality offering is set to open later this year.
BYD’s Dolphin as nimble as its namesake
CHINESE ELECTRIC car giant
BYD took New Zealand by
storm more than a year ago with
its Atto3 urban SUV, and are
looking to make a similar impact
here with its recently launched
smaller sibling the Dolphin.
BYD has moved with the speed
of light from an unknown here
two years ago, to a brand most
with a smidgen of interest in
motoring will have heard of.
While it isn’t expected to
emulate the sales feats of the
Atto3, BYD are still expecting
big things from their smallest
car, which they say is brimming
cutting‐edge electric vehicle
tech, and a high level of standard
equipment. So the Dolphin is
the first model in BYD’s “Ocean”
series, and aiming to make a big
splash on our EV market, with its
distinctive design making a more
emphatic visual statement are
than the benign looking Atto3.
The Dolphin offers a WLTP
combined electric range of a
fair to middling 340km for the
standard 45kWh battery model
and more respectable 427km
range for the extended 60kWh
variant. High performance is also
achieved when recharging – an
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
80kW DC charger can replenish
the battery from 30 per cent to 80
per cent in about half an hour.
Core to the BYD electric
range of vehicles and giving it a
genuine point of difference, is its
advanced Blade Battery. It allows
for increased energy storage and
greater driving range, because
its construction accommodates
significantly more cells than
a conventional lithium-ion
phosphate battery used in most
EVs.
BYD has released a functional
new customer app that’s available
to download from NZ app stores.
Among other things, it turns
your vehicle on, controls the air
conditioning, checks your battery
charge, and raises or lowers the
windows, all at the touch of
a button when your phone is
within 3G cellular service.
A 150,000km new vehicle
warranty with a six‐year roadside
assistance package provides
reasonably peace-of-mind
motoring. An even healthier dose
of that comes with an eight-year
or 160,000km (whichever comes
first) warranty on the Blade
Battery.
The extended range Dolphin
provided for this road test use a
single front-wheel-drive electric
motor producing 150kW and
310Nm of torque. This potent
power and torque double
whammy is enough to barrel
through the 0-100km/h dash in
a zippy seven seconds. This is
five seconds ahead of the more
modestly powered standard
range model and the more
invigorated EV to drive in the
sub $60k price bracket.
The Dolphin is ultra smooth,
with instant acceleration
ensuring there is never a dull
moment, and it puts a smile on
your face when it blasts off from
standing starts.
There is power and plenty of
it when, and where, you need
it. Open road driving and hills,
especially with 2-3 passengers
on board, gobbles up the battery
range fairly quickly. The single
speed transmission works
seamlessly with the electric
motor, and so it should. With
one ratio, what could possibly go
wrong?
The classy interior is designed
with expansive curves to create
the illusion that the occupants
are wrapped in waves.
However, these don’t wash
over the fact that this isn’t the
most generously proportioned
cabin, even for a small EV. It’s
much narrower and cramped
Ratings out of 10: Performance 8; Handling 7; Build Quality
7; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 5; Value for
money: 7; Safety – Five Star ANCAP rating.
Overall points out of 10: 7
than I expected. That hemmed
in feeling is exacerbated by over
sized front sport seats. These
largely block the forward view
of rear seat passengers, already
grappling with a lack of leg and
shoulder room.
Don’t get me started on the
tiny 384L luggage capacity in the
rear hatch. These people and load
space or the lack of it, are the
two biggest let downs with this
vehicle.
This is a highly efficient and
technologically advanced car,
and you are constantly reminded
by the plethora of premium
features. These include a 12.8-
inch rotating touch screen,
with voice integration. A large
panoramic sunroof is a stunner.
Made of high‐strength acoustic
and thermally insulated doublelayer
grey glazing, with a glass
area comparable to that of a large
luxury car. It is also equipped
with a 97 per cent sunshade to
keep you cool when the summer
heat goes on.
The Dolphin is packed with
safety and advanced driver
assistance features. It leads the
way with seven airbags, forward
collision warning, and driver
fatigue monitoring. It isn’t
done there, with autonomous
emergency braking, rear collision
warning, rear cross traffic
alert, rear cross traffic brake,
lane departure prevention and
emergency lane keeping assist.
To ensure no safety stone was
left unturned, owners enjoy the
safety and security of adaptive
cruise control, while a panoramic
camera provides you with 360‐
degree visibility for safe vehicle
manoeuvring.
You get one of the most
enlightening small EV
experiences around with smart
lighting technology that provides
a broader beam of light to assist
visibility when driving at night.
All this proves BYD really is an
EV producer full of bright, new
ideas.
Unlike the Atto3’s more comfy,
easy-going driving nature, the
Dolphin, just like the wonderful
creature it’s named after, is
nimble, fun, and playful.
This vehicle sits on the cusp
of performance hatch territory,
with its strong and relentless
acceleration and sharp yet deftly
balanced road holding, that holds
its shape and composure through
the most demanding corners,
with polish and poise. It really
relishes our undulating roads
where it can show its handling
abilities.
The steering is big step up
on the Atto3’s fair-to-middling
effort, offering plenty of road feel,
is nicely weighted, and reacts
promptly and accurately to the
driver’s commands.
