GROUND CONTROL: Airman Ron will be collecting
funds for rescue helicopters again this year.

AIRMAN RON will be
back out in the community
fundraising for Canterbury
rescue helicopters.
But he will not be walking
90km like he did in 2022.
Instead, he will be collecting
funds outside Halswell and
Wigram New Worlds for the
Westpac and Roa Mining
rescue helicopters.
Ron Towner gained the
nickname ‘Airman Ron’ two
years ago when he raised
$91,000 while walking 90km
in the area around his home
before his 90th birthday. He
received national recognition
for his efforts and appeared on
TV show Seven Sharp.
Ron was inspired to take up
the challenge after one of his
friends noticed him going on
daily walks. She said he looked
like Captain Tom Moore, a
retired British Army officer
who, in 2020, raised more
than £32.79 million (NZD$60
million) for the National Health
Service while walking 100
lengths of his garden before his
100th birthday.
The Canterbury rescue choppers’
latest campaign, which
will be held in August, is called
Back to Base.
The now 91-year-old encourages
retirees to take part.

“I think you need to be doing
something when you’re old,
rather than just sitting around,”
Ron said.
Participants can choose from
four distances – 9km, 49km,
97km, and 155km – and can
complete their chosen distance
through walking, running, riding
or skiing, all while gaining
sponsors.
The distances reflect the regular
routes the air rescue service
takes around Canterbury.
Back to Base Crew chief Rick
Knight said the challenge is
about getting fit and boosting
mental well-being, while
directly supporting the critical
training and equipment the
rescue helicopters depend on.
“Whether it’s hitting the gym,
the golf course, or the great
outdoors, this challenge is a
chance to push limits and show
creativity.
“Our message is to sign up,
start training, seek sponsorship,
and support the crew to
get Back to Base in August,”
Knight said.
Participants who fundraise
more than $100 will receive
a free medal to mark their
achievement.
Ron served for the Royal Air
Force in England from 1948 to
1951.

Knitting on the tram

KNITTERS AND crocheters
took a ride on one of the city’s
historic trams to celebrate
World Wide Knit in Public Day.
The global event takes place
every year on the second
Saturday of June.
It encourages people with
a love for the craft to come
together in a public place to knit
and crochet items as they meet
new people.
Ninja knitter Sally Brown
organised the ‘Knit on the tram’
event, which she believes offers a
range of benefits.
“It’s about, you know, making
beautiful things – the gloves,
the scarf and things like that but
it’s about getting together with
other people.
“You don’t have to knit, I
mean, you don’t have to chat,
you can just knit, you can chat
and knit. It’s about well-being
really and that’s why it’s so
popular now.”
The knitting crew enjoyed a
free loop on the tram, before
continuing onto Turanga library
for a cup of a tea and a scone.
Community organisation
Volunteering Canterbury
also joined the fun as part of
its ‘Knit for purpose’ initiative,
which saw volunteers create
blankets by knitting small
squares together.

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS will be off
to a cracker start with the annual
Winter Fireworks Spectacular,
followed by two weeks of
KidsFest.
The fireworks show at New
Brighton pier on Saturday, July
6 starts at 7.30pm and runs for
about 15 minutes.
Said city council manager of
events and arts Lucy Blackmore:
“This year the soundtrack accompanying
the fireworks display has
an 80s theme, featuring iconic hits
by Queen, Whitney Houston, Bon
Jovi, Talking Heads and more.”
The event zone at the car park
on Marine Pde, north of the
pier, will also feature 80s fever,
Blackmore said. DJ DZJ and The
Hits FM will be hosting fun,
family-friendly entertainment
from 5.30pm to 8pm, with food
vendors on site.
A free bus ride home on the
Route 5 or Route 60 bus will also
be offered this year, with additional
connecting services.
KidsFest begins the same
day as the fireworks. Now in its
33rd year, it offers more than
200 activities for kids aged 0-17
during the winter school holidays.

Pop-up puppet
show proving
a hit with crowd

HAROLD THE singing, dancing
puppet has been hanging out in
central Christchurch – and he’s
just one marionette putting a
smile on people’s faces.
Burwood puppeteer Jacim
Thompson has been performing
lunchtime shows at Cashel Mall,
to the delight of young and old
passers-by.
“The children – their reaction
is amazing.
“I actually let kids have a go as
long as they’re gentle with (the
puppet). If I can see they’re not
going to mash it about.
“And you can see the look on
their face of how much natural
movement it can get and, wow,
this is not a PlayStation game but
it feels so much fun,” he said.
Thompson became interested
in the craft earlier this year after
finding puppets at a relative’s
house. He now makes his own
marionettes on a 3D printer.
“I’m constantly thinking
about what puppet I could make
and how can I bring a smile to
people’s faces, and what other
functions I could add, and what
music can I learn,” he said.
Thompson posts videos of his
performances on social media.
He has given the puppets their
own names and personalities, including
‘Psymon the mushroom’
and ‘Boney the skeleton’.
“So now I’m working on a
teddy bear. I’ve got my little alien
there who I’m hoping to get to
blow bubbles, but I’m having
trouble with that at the moment.
I’ve got quite a few more in the
works that I haven’t thought of
names for yet,” he said.
Thompson has been
encouraged by the popularity of
his performances and hopes to
take his show to other locations
around the city.

CELEBRATION: Members of Avonside Girls’ High School’s Z Club received
certificates to mark the group’s 30th anniversary.

marks 30 years of
service, advocacy
AVONSIDE GIRLS’ High School’s Z Club
celebrated its 30th anniversary on Friday.
Z Club is run by the members of the
Zonta Club of Christchurch-Canterbury,
and encourages girls to follow principles
of service and advocacy within their
communities.
Each year the club supports a local
charity with service and fundraising.
This year, it is supporting Good Night
Sleep Tight, an organisation that provides
warm winter bedding and clothing for
children and families who are struggling
financially.
Z Club was started in 1994 by Janet
Messervy, a long-standing Zonta member.
She now lives in Auckland but flew down
especially for the special anniversary
celebration.
Since 1994, eight more clubs have
formed, plus two Golden Z Clubs in
universities.
Speakers at the more formal part of the
celebration were Phillippa Jacobs-Lory,
governor of Zonta New Zealand and a
member of the Christchurch-Canterbury
club, Avonside principal Catherine Law,
past-principal of Sue Hume, and Anna
Arps, a trustee of Good Night Sleep Tight.
The keynote speaker for the event was
Zarah Dittmer, a former Avonside student
and Z Club member.
Dittmer, now a police officer, is a
passionate advocate for Z Clubs in schools
and spoke about her time at Avonside and
her police work.
There were other guests helping Z Club
celebrate their milestone – Sarah Lilley,
the teacher who supports the Avonside
Z Club, members of Zonta clubs from
across Christchurch, representatives
from Aviva and Good Night Sleep Tight
plus current members of Z Club who all
received a certificate of attendance.
Before moving through to the canteen
for afternoon tea, a celebration cake was
cut by Milly Carson, the current president
of Z Club.

Not sure of its pedigree, but it’s a
first-time caller to our market but
was most likely used in selected
American Lexus models, where
the brand is a luxury market
colossus. In the F-Sport, with a
couple of decent sized batteries,
it makes a mighty 273kW of
pulsating power.
For those wondering what a
performance-oriented Lexus
hybrid would go like, the short
answer is with sensational pace,
and remarkable smoothness.
It impresses on so many fronts.
The crisp shifting auto is hard
to fault, largely because it rarely
deviates from the high standard
it sets.
Flat-folding rear seats create
a generously proportioned
rear cargo compartment with
passenger space both front and
rear hovering around the large
luxury class SUV norm. Some
will lament the loss of a third row
of seats, a popular feature in the
previous model.
The settings of the independent
suspension are firmer for the
F-Sport in recognition of its new
powerhouse performance status.
With AWD fighting its corner,
grip and traction are exceptional
and a master stroke by the Lexus
suspension tuning crew.
Given its extra height and
weight, the test vehicle was nimble
and easy to manipulate over
twisty terrain. Such road-holding
athleticism has been created while
still retaining just the right level of
ride comfort.
