GROUND CONTROL: Airman Ron will be collecting 

funds for rescue helicopters again this year.

AIRMAN RON will be 

back out in the community 

fundraising for Canterbury 

rescue helicopters. 

But he will not be walking 

90km like he did in 2022. 

Instead, he will be collecting 

funds outside Halswell and 

Wigram New Worlds for the 

Westpac and Roa Mining 

rescue helicopters. 

Ron Towner gained the 

nickname ‘Airman Ron’ two 

years ago when he raised 

$91,000 while walking 90km 

in the area around his home 

before his 90th birthday. He 

received national recognition 

for his efforts and appeared on 

TV show Seven Sharp. 

Ron was inspired to take up 

the challenge after one of his 

friends noticed him going on 

daily walks. She said he looked 

like Captain Tom Moore, a 

retired British Army officer 

who, in 2020, raised more 

than £32.79 million (NZD$60 

million) for the National Health 

Service while walking 100 

lengths of his garden before his 

100th birthday. 

The Canterbury rescue choppers’ 

latest campaign, which 

will be held in August, is called 

Back to Base. 

The now 91-year-old encourages 

retirees to take part.

“I think you need to be doing 

something when you’re old, 

rather than just sitting around,” 

Ron said. 

Participants can choose from 

four distances – 9km, 49km, 

97km, and 155km – and can 

complete their chosen distance 

through walking, running, riding 

or skiing, all while gaining 

sponsors. 

The distances reflect the regular 

routes the air rescue service 

takes around Canterbury. 

Back to Base Crew chief Rick 

Knight said the challenge is 

about getting fit and boosting 

mental well-being, while 

directly supporting the critical 

training and equipment the 

rescue helicopters depend on. 

“Whether it’s hitting the gym, 

the golf course, or the great 

outdoors, this challenge is a 

chance to push limits and show 

creativity. 

“Our message is to sign up, 

start training, seek sponsorship, 

and support the crew to 

get Back to Base in August,” 

Knight said. 

Participants who fundraise 

more than $100 will receive 

a free medal to mark their 

achievement. 

Ron served for the Royal Air 

Force in England from 1948 to 

1951.

Knitting on the tram

KNITTERS AND crocheters 

took a ride on one of the city’s 

historic trams to celebrate 

World Wide Knit in Public Day. 

The global event takes place 

every year on the second 

Saturday of June. 

It encourages people with 

a love for the craft to come 

together in a public place to knit 

and crochet items as they meet 

new people. 

Ninja knitter Sally Brown 

organised the ‘Knit on the tram’ 

event, which she believes offers a 

range of benefits. 

“It’s about, you know, making 

beautiful things – the gloves, 

the scarf and things like that but 

it’s about getting together with 

other people. 

“You don’t have to knit, I 

mean, you don’t have to chat, 

you can just knit, you can chat 

and knit. It’s about well-being 

really and that’s why it’s so 

popular now.” 

The knitting crew enjoyed a 

free loop on the tram, before 

continuing onto Turanga library 

for a cup of a tea and a scone. 

Community organisation 

Volunteering Canterbury 

also joined the fun as part of 

its ‘Knit for purpose’ initiative, 

which saw volunteers create 

blankets by knitting small 

squares together.

Spectacular, followed by two 

weeks of KidsFest. 

The fireworks show at New 

Brighton pier on Saturday, July 

6 starts at 7.30pm and runs for 

about 15 minutes.

“This year the soundtrack accompanying 

the fireworks display 

has an 80s theme, featuring 

iconic hits by Queen, Whitney 

Houston, Bon Jovi, Talking 

Heads and more.” 

The event zone at the Marine 

Pde car park, north of the pier, 

will feature 80s fever, Blackmore 

said. DJ DZJ will be hosting fun, 

family-friendly entertainment 

from 5.30pm to 8pm, with food 

vendors onsite. 

A free bus ride home on the 

Route 5 or Route 60 bus will also 

be offered this year, with additional 

connecting services. 

KidsFest begins the same 

day as the fireworks. Now in its 

33rd year, it offers more than 

200 activities for kids aged 

0-17 during the winter school 

holidays.

What's Behind the 

Allure of an Award? 

If you drive past any real estate company 

at this time of year, particularly those 

belonging to the same brand as we do, 

you’ll probably notice some kind of award 

marketing at play. Acknowledgment of 

success for client service, sales volumes 

(dependent on the size of the office, 

company or franchise), auction excellence 

and property management are the most 

common. 

There’s a strong desire to compete for the 

public’s attention and it can’t be easy for 

anyone to decipher exactly what it all means, 

which is why I’ve often been asked ‘how can 

there be so many number-one offices or 

franchises?’. 

It comes down to metrics, or measurements 

that allow you to track performance and 

productivity. 

In Harcourts, one such metric looks at the 

size of an office based on the number of 

consultants they have and then how they 

compare to other offices of the same size 

across New Zealand, hence number one, two 

and three awards for small, medium and large 

offices. 

There are also international awards, which 

look at productivity based on the volume of 

revenue produced. Next come the awards 

for consultants, which acknowledge 30 

consultants working for our brand out of 

almost 500 consultants in our fair city. 

Then there are awards for the top 20 

consultants in New Zealand (out of over 2,500 

in total) and the top 20 internationally (out of 

a staggering 6,800 agents across 10 countries). 

Yes, I know that’s a lot of acknowledgement 

and it’s a little confusing, but if you cut 

through the rhetoric, it’s worth considering 

the following: should I work with an individual, 

team or company that is award-winning? Will 

working with people acknowledged for results 

and performance make a difference to the 

price that’s achieved? 

I happen to believe it does, but there are 

questions to ask first. 

Are their results staggering or paper thin? This 

question refers to both the agents and the 

companies. 

Is their award local or international, and is it 

for doing more than any other company could 

or does do? 

Are their consultants household names, 

achieving consistently year on year, or even 

rookies who have come along, fresh and 

fabulous, with the energy to take the world 

on? 

And, finally, when you contact them, do 

they respond with purpose and exceptional 

knowledge? 

Although it’s hard to gauge which are the 

‘best’ awards, it’s those coveted ‘number 

ones’ which herald a company or individual 

that’s worth investigating and considering. 

After all, when you’re thinking, what am I 

going to do with my precious family home or 

investment property, it’s vital to get it right. 

And getting it right starts with knowledge, so 

here’s what I know for sure. 

We are lucky here in Christchurch that there 

is a tremendous amount of excellence and 

expertise across a number of different offices 

and franchises, but of all the many businesses 

the one I know the best is the one I’m part of. 

And what awards did we win? 

The number-one residential office for 

Harcourts in NZ (Papanui). 

The number-one office for income, income per 

sales consultant, number of auctions, auctions 

per sales consultant … and the number-one 

office out of almost 870 internationally. This 

large scoop of awards has been an annual 

occurrence year after year after year for our 

Papanui office, as the award for NZ’s top 

franchise for income per sales consultant has 

been for our company. 

In addition to this, this year there was 

an excellence award for our property 

management division and our snazzy 

best-presented (yes, that’s also an award) 

Spitfire Square office. Our incredible team of 

consultants were also award-winners across 

local, national and international platforms, 

and I’m constantly in awe of their staggering 

results. 

Cameron Bailey, the number-one agent 

across every brand in NZ and the international 

number-one for Harcourts stands out as the 

ultimate professional, and this time he was 

joined internationally by Michelle Fu and 

Mark Wang. On other occasions it’s been Mary 

Turnbull and Mark O’Loughlin. 

Although it’s usually my preference to let 

actions do the talking rather than words, 

this year – a year full of turmoil and change, 

where all most people want is some certainty 

and a safe place to land – I thought I’d shine 

a light on a group of people and a company 

that epitomizes what it means to be awardwinning. 

I hope you’ll allow my deep pride to show on 

this singular occasion.

Pop-up puppet 

show proving 

a hit with crowd

HAROLD THE singing, 

dancing puppet has been 

hanging out in the central 

city – and he’s just one 

marionette putting a smile on 

people’s faces. 

Puppeteer Jacim Thompson 

has been performing lunchtime 

shows at Cashel Mall, to 

the delight of young and old 

passers-by. 

“The children – their reaction 

is amazing. 

“I actually let kids have a 

go as long as they’re gentle 

with (the puppet). If I can see 

they’re not going to mash it 

about. 

“And you can see the look 

on their face of how much 

natural movement it can 

get and, wow, this is not a 

PlayStation game but it feels 

so much fun,” he said. 

Thompson became interested 

in the craft earlier this 

year after finding puppets 

at a relative’s house. He now 

makes his own marionettes 

on a 3D printer. 

“I’m constantly thinking 

about what puppet I could 

make and how can I bring a 

smile to people’s faces, and 

what other functions I could 

add, and what music can I 

learn,” he said. 

Thompson posts videos of 

his performances on social 

media. 

He has given the puppets 

their own names and personalities, 

including ‘Psymon the 

mushroom’ and ‘Boney the 

skeleton’. 

“So now I’m working on a 

teddy bear. I’ve got my little 

alien there who I’m hoping to 

get to blow bubbles, but I’m 

having trouble with that at 

the moment. I’ve got quite a 

few more in the works that I 

haven’t thought of names for 

yet,” he said. 

Thompson has been 

encouraged by the popularity 

of his performances and 

hopes to take his show to 

other locations around the 

city.

recent Northcote School cross 

country 

POSITIVITY AND participation. Two 

words to best describe the atmosphere 

during the cross country at Te Kura o 

Matarangi Northcote School. 

All the students participated and tried 

their best to score points for their whānau/ 

house groups. Those on the sidelines, after 

participating in their own activity, even had 

the energy to cheer on their peers. 

Northcote’s cross country event 

included an obstacle course. As soon as 

students passed the starting line, they were 

energetically running to jump over the 

benches used as hurdles and crawling under 

the wooden platforms of their playground. 

The sense of excitement lingered until the 

end. This was Northcote’s own spin on cross 

country racing, implementing what they 

called ‘the fun aspect’. 

There was an emphasis on ‘changing 

the concept’ of cross country to cater to a 

wider variety of preferences. This involved 

lessening the competition of racing 

and instead focusing on recreation and 

participation, which yielded fruitful results. 

When asked, both teachers and students 

responded that the ‘fun aspect’ made it a lot 

better. 

Northcote School’s sports coordinator 

Rebecca Low, when asked what her hopes 

for the day were, said; “Basically, everyone 

has fun so that it’s not just about winning, 

but it’s also about helping other people, 

teamwork, resilience, and adding a few 

obstacles to create a fun aspect to it.” 

Staff member, Sue Innes said: “Some older 

children were helping the little ones out. It 

was really good to see.” 

It wasn’t all up to the students though. The 

staff at Northcote worked hard to put the 

activity together with resources from their 

school and managed to make it interesting 

and challenging for everyone involved. 

There was a strong sense of community 

at Northcote and everyone was supporting 

and encouraging each other. This was 

shown by some students eagerly expressing 

their heartwarming thoughts. 

One student, when asked why their 

house group would win that day, said it 

was because they were “trying their best at 

running’’. 

Another, when asked what the favourite 

part of their day was, answered with a 

wholesome, “cheering on people who may 

lose or win’’. 

Any feelings of tiredness were overcome 

by waves of encouragement from supportive 

teachers and classmates. The day ended with 

a recitation of familiar songs and a rush of 

gratitude to teachers via the students.

A sweet, salty, savoury slice of winter 

Beetroot and feta filo 

pie is a good idea for 

today and tomorrow, 

writes Nigel Slater. As 

are white chocolate and 

lemon truffles, any time 

Beetroot and feta filo pie 

Serves 6 

Ingredients 

6 sheets filo pastry 

2 medium onions 

2 Tbsp olive oil 

3 cloves garlic 

1 red chilli 

1 lemon 

600g spinach and/or beetroot 

leaves and stems 

400g beetroot 

200g feta cheese 

75g parmesan 

100g butter 

Instructions 

• You will need a metal baking 

tin with shallow sides, about 

30x20cm. 

• Defrost the pastry, keeping 

it covered to prevent the leaves 

drying out. Preheat the oven 

to 200°C. Peel the onions and 

slice finely. Warm the oil in a 

saucepan, add the onions and 

cook until soft and pale gold – a 

good 20-25 minutes. Peel and 

crush the garlic and stir into the 

onions once they have started to 

colour. An occasional stir stops 

them burning. 

• Finely chop the chilli, 

removing the seeds if you want 

a milder heat, and add to the 

onion. Finely grate the zest from 

the lemon. Wash the spinach 

or beetroot leaves and, while 

they still hold a little water, put 

them in a pan over a moderate 

heat. Cover tightly with a lid 

and let them cook in their own 

steam for a couple of minutes 

until wilted. Drain, then squeeze 

the water from them with your 

hands. 

• Peel and coarsely grate the 

beetroot and stir into the cooked 

onions. Don’t be too thorough, 

unless you want pink onions. 

Crumble the feta into the onions, 

keeping the pieces large. Add the 

lemon zest, then finely grate and 

add the parmesan. 

• Melt the butter in a small 

pan and remove from the heat. 

Brush the base of the baking tin 

with a little butter, lay a sheet of 

filo over it, slightly overhanging 

the tin, then brush with butter 

and add a second one. Brush 

this, too, then spoon the beetroot 

filling over it. Place a sheet of 

pastry over that, brush with 

butter, then add a second and 

butter that. Take 2 more sheets, 

dip them in the butter, then put 

them loosely on top of the pie. 

• Bake for about 30 minutes 

until the pastry is crisp, golden 

and translucent. 

• Remove from the oven and 

leave for 10 minutes to settle 

before slicing. 

Chocolate and lemon 

truffles 

Makes 30 

Ingredients 

350g white chocolate 

75g unsalted butter, diced 

150ml double cream 

Salt, a pinch 

4 tsp lemon zest 

2 tsp lemon juice 

To coat 

200g dark chocolate 

Crystallised orange pieces to 

decorate 

Instructions 

Chop the chocolate into small 

pieces and put them in a 

heatproof bowl. Find a saucepan 

in which the bowl will sit neatly. 

Half fill the pan with water, 

put the chocolate, butter and 

cream and a pinch of salt into the 

bowl and set it on the pan over 

a moderate heat. Make sure the 

base of the bowl doesn’t sit in the 

water. 

• Let the water simmer until 

the chocolate has started to melt. 

Avoid the temptation to stir the 

chocolate — it will seize on you 

— and make certain it doesn’t get 

too hot. 

• As soon as the chocolate has 

melted remove it from the heat 

and stir very gently, just enough 

to bring the cream and chocolate 

together. 

•Stir in the lemon zest and 

juice, then set aside, covered 

with a plate in the fridge. Test 

the mixture regularly to check its 

texture. It should be firm enough 

to roll. 

• Remove small scoops of the 

truffle mixture (I make them 

about 2 tsp each) and place on 

to kitchen parchment. Let them 

firm up again in the fridge for a 

few minutes. Meanwhile, roughly 

chop and melt the dark chocolate 

over a pan of hot water, removing 

it from the heat as soon as it is 

melted. Using kitchen tongs or 

a skewer dip the truffles into the 

melted chocolate then return to 

the parchment. 

• Add a piece of crystallised 

orange or lemon to each one, then 

chill them in the fridge until the 

chocolate has set crisp.
