ROBBIE TIMO is at an age
where he should be relaxing
others get battered and
bruised.
But the 55-year-old’s
enduring fitness sees him
he runs out with Sumner’s
division 2 side in what will be
his 500th game for his beloved
David Bain
thought to
be living on
outskirts of
Cambridge
• By Laine Priestley
DAVID BAIN is believed to be
living in the Waikato on a $1.27
million lifestyle block with his
family.
Bain, who has changed his
name by deed poll to William
David Cullen Davies, had been
living in Christchurch before
reportedly moving to Australia in
2017 with his wife Liz Davies and
their children.
Bain was acquitted in 2009 of
the murder of his family in Dunedin
in 1994 after years of legal
battles to overturn the original
guilty verdicts.
A neighbour told the Otago
Daily Times Bain had been living
a few houses down the road from
him for “a few years now”.
“I was working with him . . .
about a year or so ago.”
Liz Davies is listed as a teacher
at a primary school in the Cambridge
area and residents spoken
to by the ODT said the family
had been rumoured for years to
be living on the outskirts of the
Waikato town.
David Bain was found guilty
of the murder of his five family
members – Robin, 58, Margaret,
50, Arawa, 19, Laniet, 18, and
Stephen, 14 – in May 1995 and
jailed for life with a minimum
term of 16 years.
DESPITE BEING 22km behind
schedule, Emma Timmis is
confident she’ll make up that
distance to take her fourth
Guinness World Record.
Timmis is halfway through her
attempt at breaking the record
for the greatest distance on a
treadmill in seven consecutive
days. The record is 833km, and
she’s passed the 375km mark in
less than 44 hours.
Timmis began her attempt on
Sunday and runs from 5.10am
until 10pm daily at the Ngā Puna
Wai Sports Hub. She has been
doing everything on the treadmill,
from eating and drinking to
chatting with her support crew,
but takes 30-minute breaks every
four hours to eat solid food and
change her shoes and socks and
the dressings on her feet.
The long distance athlete and
artist said the past four days have
been a rollercoaster due to struggling
with stomach cramps and
vomiting.
“There’s been ups and downs.
The first day was great, the
second day was terrible, the third
day was terrible.”
However, she remains positive,
and is grateful for her “dream
team” support crew.
“There’s four people in the support
crew, two in the morning,
two in the evening, and they’re
just going above and beyond to
do everything for me.
“A record like this doesn’t happen
without an impeccable crew.”
Timmis is also raising funds
for mental health and addiction
recovery charity The Speed
Freaks.
Fifty-six fundraisers have
joined her, each setting a goal
to walk or run from 5km up to
85km in seven days. So far, they
have raised more than $5600.
Deal struck on future of A&P show
reserves, the compliance and
financial risks for the Association
of running a full show in partnership
with Event Hire, precluded a
combined event,” said board chair
Stewart Mitchell.
“It’s disappointing that our
financial and resourcing issues
have forced the cancellation
of this year’s NZ Agricultural
Show. However, the Association
welcomes the involvement of
Event Hire in providing a number
of fun days out on Canterbury
Anniversary weekend.
“The Association has commenced
planning for a new and
exciting Show format in 2025 and
thanks Event Hire for their positive
and professional approach to
these discussions.
“We look forward to working
with them as details are finalised
in coming weeks.”
Emma pushing through
pain in record attempt
Timmis holds the world
record for running the length
of New Zealand (female) in 20
days, 17 hours, 15 minutes and
57 seconds. She also holds the
record for the longest journey by
elliptical cycle in a single country,
(7951km) and accidentally accidentally
smashed the 48-hour
treadmill world record last year
(340.36km).
Timmis will complete her run
on Sunday evening, and hopes to
celebrate with plenty of sleep and
a massage.
Timo ready to celebrate then step back
• From page 1
“Sumner’s a unique club and I
know that everybody that comes
over to play at Sumner just likes
the atmosphere, where it is, the
grounds,” said Timo, a school
teacher at Te Aratai College in
Linwood.
“You look around, you got the
hills, you got the beach, you got
Taylors (Mistake), it’s just a nice
place to play.”
Timo said his lifestyle
helps him stay fit and
ready to go, week on
week. He bikes from
his home in Papanui to
work as often as possible.
“I bike to work most
days as much as I can,
I’ve still got the
gym membership
at Ultra
Fitness in
Cranford
St.”
And no Sumner player would
be complete without a recovery
trip to the surf on a Sunday
morning.
Timo said it would be a special
moment to run out for the 500th
time for the club he first joined
“It’s just special for the club
and the community, really, I’ve
watched it grow over the years
into what it is now, I’m
really proud of the
place it’s at . . . and
really proud of the
people behind the
club that make
sure it happens
year in, year out.
“The committee,
the volunteers,
everybody that
makes sure
that the
club
stays up on its feet.”
Being older than his teammates
and opponents, he sometimes
gets a few jibes but says it’s
all in good fun.
“Once we start playing, it
doesn’t matter what age you are,
you’ve still got to do this and do
that.
“Plus I’ve got my own tricks I
can bring out.”
But this season will likely be
his last at senior level.
“I’m glad to get to 500 this
weekend and then I’ll be just
counting down,” he said.
“Finish the season, get that
done, then do golden oldies.
“It can be tough, it’s a pretty
full-on game. I’ll just do whatever
I can to finish the year and
then be happy with that.”
But before then, he’s looking
forward to the weekend’s celebrations
at the club’s headquarters
in St Leonard’s Square.
“There’ll be lots of friends, lots
of people I’ve known around
some of the clubs too, they’ll be
there and that’s great.
“Over the years I’ve known
so many people throughout the
different clubs and made lots of
friends and it’s been really good.”
Bain received an ex-gratia payment
He was granted name
Herald reported.
The suppression order was extended
at his second appearance
last week when he indicated he
was seeking a new lawyer. It was
continued further yesterday after
the new lawyer told the court
he had not had time to “trawl”
through all of the information.
Judge Paul Kellar said he
would extend one last time to
allow the man’s lawyer a fair
chance to make submissions on
the matter.
He remanded the man in
custody until June 25, when
suppression would be decided.
Surprise plans for huts but residents
• By Daniel Alvey and Geoff
Sloan
GREENPARK Huts residents
who will be forced out of their
homes are shocked Ngāi Tahu
will build a facility at the site
after they have gone.
The 32 bach owners were due
to vacate their homes at the end
of this month. But they have
been given a one-year reprieve,
with Ngāi Tahu extending the
date to June 30, 2025.
In 2020, Ngāi Tahu told hut
owners it would not renew their
leases and said people would
have until June 30 this year to
leave and clear the site of any
structures.
In its reasons for ending hut
leases, Ngāi Tahu cited sea level
rise, issues with wastewater
removal and drinking water
supply, and the cultural
significance of the area.
Ngāi Tahu says it will help
with some costs including
project management fees,
asbestos testing, capping of
drinking water bores and the
decommissioning of septic
tanks.
But The Star can reveal Ngāi
Tahu plans to establish a centre
of excellence for mahinga kai on
the site.
Mahinga kai means ‘to work
the food’. It relates to traditional
NOT IMPRESSED: Greenpark Huts resident Ross Wilson said the Ngāi Tahu plan to build a
mahinga kai centre was a double standard.
food gathering practices, as well
as protecting ecosystems and
habitats species are found in.
Almost all residents were
unaware of the centre until they
were told by The Star.
Resident Ross Wilson said the
Ngāi Tahu plan was a double
standard.
“It would be nice to find out a
bit more about that, and we will
in time, but it seems very strange
if they’re going to put that on
here when they’re talking about
sea level rise,” Wilson said.
Resident Don Brown, who is
Ngāi Tahu, found out about the
plan in a meeting with the iwi
on May 26, two days after the
extension was given.
He had asked for a meeting to
discuss his personal situation,
and how the iwi could help him
relocate to another home on the
lake, not at Greenpark Huts.
“They offered me a home
occupied by a former pakeha
fisherman, but it was totally
unsatisfactory.”
Brown said tikanga (custom)
had not been carried out to
remove tapu since a person had
died at the home, and therefore
he could not take it.
It was at that meeting he asked
what the plans were for the
Greenpark Huts land. He was
told it would become a centre of
excellence.
“When my son and I asked at
a meeting with Ngāi Tahu when
can we expect that? The answer
was unknown. Is there a budget?
No.”
still have to go
Brown has a centuries-old
connection to Te Waihora Lake
Ellesmere, which started well
before Ngāi Tahu arrived in Canterbury
in about 1690.
Brown traces his whakapapa
back to pre-Ngāi Tahu Ngati
Māmoe and Waitaha, iwi which
used the lake as a valuable food
source 400-500 years
ago.
He has lived in his
bach for about 30 years.
He uses it as his connection
to Te Waihora Lake
Ellesmere and is regularly
fishing the lake and
engaging in mahinga kai.
“If you’re going to
build a centre of excellence for
mahinga kai, why not just leave
Don Brown and his hut here.”
Te Taumutu Rūnanga chair
Dr Liz Brown confirmed the
plans for the centre, but did not
respond to questions from The
Star about what was going to be
built, when and at what cost.
Liz Brown is Don Brown’s
second cousin.
She also did not respond to
questions about why the iwi was
looking to establish a centre,
given the reasons cited for the
huts’ removal, which include
climate change concerns.
Hut owners were sent a letter
from Ngāi Tahu chief executive
Ben Bateman about the year-long
extension.
“We have heard from a number
of leaseholders that more time is
needed to ensure leaseholders are
well-informed about their demolition
options,” Bateman said in
the letter.
He also said the time
would allow people to get
Government support to
find alternative housing.
Ngāi Tahu would
continue discussions
with residents.
Brown said the extension
was just dragging
Don Brown out the inevitable.
“It just gives people
false hope.”
Wilson said the extension has
given people “breathing space”.
“It was a huge relief to the ones
who are still out there. But a lot
of them are saying they (Ngāi
Tahu) are just tormenting
us with another year of pressure.”
Bach owner Kane Scarrott’s
family has owned a hut since
1953. Scarrott also has a bach of
his own. He said the extra year
makes no difference.
“I’m not going anywhere, there
is no grounds for them to make
us leave,” Scarrott said.
Support pours in for
orphaned daughters
ALMOST $273,000 has been
raised for two young Christchurch
girls whose parents died from
cancer within the same week.
Nigel and Marjan Joyce
died from brain and breast
cancer respectively, leaving behind
their two daughters aged 8 and 4.
A Givealittle page set up by
family friend Angela Hawkins has
had a huge response.
“Every single bit helps as the
Joyce family prepares for the next
chapter in life and supports the
girls on their new path,” Hawkins
told the NZ Herald.
“Your contributions help keep
the memory of their parents alive
and aid the girls in thriving and
growing in their new normal,
surrounded by a caring and
amazingly supportive family.”
Hawkins told the Herald
she started the page on May
24, saying Nigel had been
diagnosed with a brain tumour,
while Marjan was shortly after
diagnosed with triple-negative
breast cancer.
The Givealittle page says: “In a
devastating turn of events, Nigel
had a health crisis on Anzac Day
and is now in end-of-life care with
TRAGIC: Marjan and Nigel Joyce with their two daughters.
approximately two weeks to live.
“After just finishing radiation
treatment and being told her
breast cancer had gone, tragically,
Marjan began experiencing vision
loss and seizures three weeks ago,
which has now been diagnosed
that the cancer had spread
through her brain.
“Their family is beyond
devastated and is doing their
best to support each other and
maintain some semblance of
normalcy for their two young
girls during this unimaginable
situation.
“This page is set up to support
the girls and the family as they
navigate this heart-wrenching
time. As parents, this situation
strikes a deep chord, and as we
look at the faces of our loved ones,
we can only begin to imagine the
pain they are enduring.”

Recreation
land could
be sold off
• By Dylan Smits
TAYLORS MISTAKE bach
owners have been refused rates
relief for a 73ha recreation area
they own, which could prompt
them to sell it.
But they are still hopeful the
bach licence fees they pay could
be used to alleviate the costs of
maintaining the land owned
through the Taylors Mistake Land
Company.
Bach owner
Malcolm McClurg
said the company
was spending about
$15,000 annually
on rates and maintenance
for the land
behind the beach.
Without reduced
costs, it may decide to sell.
Malcolm
McClurg
“It could put a stop to this great
community asset. That would be
a shame.”
A city council spokesperson
said rates relief was refused because
the land does not qualify for
non-rateable status.
McClurg is still hopeful the city
council will approve the use of the
$150,000 in accrued licence fee
income to offset costs.
The city council spokesperson
said no decision has been made
on the use of licence fees.
WOLF DECOYS are being used
to scare canada geese away from
the display gardens and picnic
areas at the Botanic Gardens.
Director Wolfgang Bopp
told Morning Report the sheer
number of birds was the problem.
“They’re large birds and for
any large animal, what goes in
the front, comes out in the back
and that’s quite a lot.
“If we only had a couple of
them, five or six across the
gardens, that wouldn’t be a
problem.”
He said picnic-goers should be
able to put their rug on the lawn
without having to contend with
a lot of geese faeces.
The black cut-out wolf and
coyote decoys were placed
around the gardens by rangers.
There is writing on the decoys
to identify they are being used
for predator control.
Bopp first heard about the
decoys from Clearwater Golf
Club.
It started placing wooden
cutouts of wild coyotes on
the course in 2021 to scare off
canada geese and unwanted
“foreign bogeys” that invaded
the fairways.
At the time, the club said
the decoys stopped geese from
“going on the fairways” and they
were “no longer the problem that
they were before”.
Wolf plan a howling success
SCARE TACTICS: The black cut-out wolf and coyote decoys were placed around the
Botanic Gardens by rangers to scare off canada geese.
Bopp is hoping the decoys
have a similar impact at the
Botanic Gardens.
“They actually gave us
one of the decoys, which
we then just traced over
and cut out our own
ones,” he said.
The decoys are moved
every day, Bopp said.
“(The ranger) will
move them every day
and he’s actually going as far as
Wolfgang
Bopp
barking at the geese at the same
time. Now he’s finding that as
soon as they see him they
think: ‘Oh right, okay, let’s
move on’.”
The decoys did not work
100 per cent of the time,
but Bopp said they appeared
to be keeping the
geese off the lawns.
“So far the wolves, a
natural predator of geese,
are working well.
“Our rangers often move them
around so the geese don’t get
used to their presence.
Bopp reminded visitors not to
“feed the geese”.
“It’s bad for the environment,
spreads disease, and creates
stress and competition among
the birds.
“We’ve also had our wolves
stolen and injured, so please let
our team know if you see any
suspicious behaviour.” – RNZ
Green light for new school, fire station
• By Dylan Smits
THE GO-AHEAD has been
given for city council land in
Diamond Harbour to be sold for
a Maori immersion school and
new fire station.
But how much the land will
be sold to Te Poho o Tamatea
Ltd and Fire and Emergency
New Zealand for is still yet to be
determined.
The sites are on a city councilowned
39ha block bordering
Whero Ave and Hunters Rd,
which has a rateable value of
$5.35 million.
The school is on 8ha block and
fire station on 0.5ha block. A
council spokesperson said the
rateable value of these blocks was
still to be determined, which will
factor into the negotiations.
Concerns over traffic around
the school have been debated
in Diamond
Harbour.
The
community
wants
continued
consultation
with the city
council and
the school
Rangimarie over its traffic
Parata plans.
Takurua Te Pā
board chair
Rangimarie Parata Takurua said
the decision has given school
planners enough assurance
to start developing a detailed
transport plan, which she hopes
will be released by the end of the
year.
“There’s still a lot of design
and master planning work to do
to answer some of the burning
questions that the community
has about access and parking.”
Diamond Harbour Community
Association chair Graeme
Fraser hopes there will continue
to be consistent public engagement
from Te Pā and the city
council.
He said Te Pā’s increased
assurance should not mean less
community consultation.
“I hope that certainty
doesn’t imply there’s no
turning back. We’d like
to think that there’s still
a case to be proven in
terms of the feasibility
and impacts on the local
community.”
A recent survey from
the city council showed
Diamond Harbour
residents were divided on
creating the school, with many
citing traffic concerns.
Parata Takurua said there was
a large amount of work to do
before all residents’ questions
can be answered.
“We will have
milestones along the
way where we will
check in.”
The decision requires
the land to be sold at
market value, with
the three parties now
employing private
valuers to negotiate a
figure.
“It will be rigorously debated,
I’m sure, about what market
Graeme Fraser
POTENTIAL: The 39.02ha
block of council-owned
land is currently used
for grazing, but the
sale of two sections has
been approved for the
construction of Māori
immersion school and
fire station.
value means,” said Parata
Takurua.
Banks Peninsula city
councillor Tyrone Fields was
pleased with the decision and
believes city council consultation
should continue.
“I expect us to have open and
honest communication on all
the issues affecting Diamond
Harbour.”
Fields said there is “a long way
to go” before the facilities can be
built.
“They need to be able to meet
all sorts of criteria before a sale
can be enacted.”
The decision notes the
community’s traffic concerns
and requests city council
staff report on the ability of
Diamond Harbour’s transport
infrastructure to handle
increased traffic.
Feasibility studies, creating a
building design and successful
resource consents will also be
required for the two builds to go
ahead.
Icy fine for driver
on school run
POLICE HANDED out some
chilling tickets yesterday
morning, with one woman
driving her children to school
in Wigram fined for having
an ice-covered windscreen.
Senior Sergeant Paul Robertson
said an officer noticed
the woman’s vehicle swerving
across the centre island
towards the kerb on the other
side of the road about 8.30am
on Wednesday.
She was stopped and fined
$150 for driving with an obscured
windscreen (right).
“With winter officially
setting in, this is a clear reminder
for motorists to think
about safe winter driving,”
Robertson said.
“It is important to ensure
your car is safe, roadworthy,
and well-equipped for winter
driving, with a safe spare
tyre, lights, brakes and
windscreen-wipers all working,
and a clean windscreen
inside and out.
“If you are ever in this situation,
there are ways to safely
and quickly defrost your
windscreen, and we urge
drivers to do so before they
head out.
“It is also important to
allow extra time before your
drive, in order to check over
your vehicle, and safely drive
to the road and weather
conditions.”
Protesters
silence
minister
THE CLIMATE Change Minister
was drowned out at a conference
by School Strike 4 Climate
activists on Tuesday.
Minister Simon Watts was
invited to speak at a conference in
Christchurch run by the Environment
Defence Society.
The protesters interrupted his
speech, chanting “climate over
profit” and “stop the greenwash.”
When asked by RNZ about
the interruption, Watts said the
Government was committed to
“meeting our climate change
targets” and will “continue to use
opportunities to engage with the
public on how to meet them”.
Environment Defence Society
chief executive Gary Taylor said
he did not blame the minister for
leaving. He said he had been looking
forward to what the minister
had to say.
“On the one hand, 50 years ago
I might have been one of those
young people protesting because
there’s a lot of anxiety about
climate change from the younger
generation, but the bottom line is
it wasn’t the time or place.”
It would make it harder for the
EDS to encourage dialogue with
government ministers, Taylor
said.
Comedian embracing happiness
after incurable cancer diagnosis
Dai Henwood headlines
a sold out Comedy
Night at the Lincoln
Event Centre on
Saturday. Today he talks
about his journey with
bowel cancer
IT WAS ALMOST a relief when
his cancer diagnosis was classed
as incurable, comedian Dai
Henwood says.
Prior to that, he was on a mission
to be cured.
“When there was this intent to
cure, there was so much pressure
on every scan, so much pressure
on every blood test, because I
wanted it to be gone, I’m fighting
for it to be gone,” Henwood said.
“And then when it was sort of
incurable, it was like, Okay, we’re
in maintenance mode.”
During Henwood’s 25-year
career he has won many major
comedy gongs, including the Billy
T Award, he’s a regular on the
country’s longest running comedy
programme, 7 Days – and
he’s hosted many shows including
Family Feud,Dancing with the
Stars and Lego Masters.
His latest project is a memoir,
The Life of Dai, co-written with
his friend and fellow comedian
Jacqui Brown.
Henwood was diagnosed in
2020 when the country was in
lockdown.
“It felt like a country-wide
sleepover, where no one knew
what was happening. No one
knew what to do.
“I remember going to a
supermarket and there was a guy
in a full wetsuit with a snorkel.
Everyone was doing everything
on the fly.”
His own experience with bowel
cancer was sadly similar to many
others, he said.
“I was misdiagnosed, I had
symptoms in 2017 and I saw my
GP and then I actually saw a bowel
specialist and they missed it.
POSITIVE: After being diagnosed with incurable bowel
cancer in 2020, Dai Henwood decided he would squeeze
all the life out of whatever time he has left.
PHOTO: FACEBOOK
“I didn’t fit the bell curve of
who was allowed a colonoscopy.
So, I didn’t have a colonoscopy at
that stage. And then finally, when
symptoms got very bad, with a lot
of rectal bleeding, my GP really
pushed for colonoscopy, and I had
one in 2020. So that was almost
three-and-a-half, four years after
my symptoms came up.”
Now Henwood is on a mission
to help others living with cancer.
“I’m just trying to help people
reframe things, realise that if
you’ve got cancer, you are living
with cancer, you need to really
squeeze the sponge and squeeze
every moment of life out.
“And that doesn’t mean
ticking [the] bucket list often,
running around the world, and
mortgaging your house to go to
Disneyland.
“It means just enjoying the
moment and that could be sitting
in looking at a beautiful
tree. It could be playing snakes
and ladders with your kids could
be giving your spouse a real hug.
You’re living, so live now.”
Despite undergoing sometimes
draining treatment, he was as
busy as ever, he said.
“I love my job when I’m
performing – that is when I’m at
my most zen, I don’t think about
anything.
“And cancer is one of those
things, anyone with a chronic
disease will know this, you think
about it. 24/7. So, if you can
have a moment where it’s not
in your mind, and for me when
I’m performing, that’s when all
I’m thinking about is the next
joke, the next interview question,
and that takes me out of it for a
moment, so it’s a real tonic.”
How he responded to cancer
was what defined him, not the
cancer itself.
“I’m going to live; I’m going
to be happy. Happiness and
unhappiness happen in two
different parts of the brain, you
can have heaps of happiness and
heaps of unhappiness all at the
same time.
“So, I just thought, I’m gonna
try and top that happiness up as
much as I can. And how do I do
that – tools like meditation really
helped for me.
“Hot and cold therapy really
helped for me, like jumping in
an ice bath because you literally
can’t think about anything but
how damned cold you are.”
Not that he did not have dark
moments, he said.
“I don’t want anyone to get this
idea that I’m walking around,
dancing on rainbows, with a
smile on my face all the time,
I struggle, I have very dark
moments. I have a lot of tears. I
have times where it’s hard to get
out of bed.”
The world was neither fair nor
unfair, he said.
“Fairness and unfairness are a
human construct, the universe
isn’t fair or unfair, it’s just events,
and how you respond to the
event is what defines you.”
His response was to “fill my
body with love”.
“I send love to my cancer. A lot
of people, and I’m not judging
anyone here, everyone’s journey
is different. A lot of people are
sort of ‘F cancer I’m in this fight’,
whereas I have been sending love
to myself, I actually believe that
love is the answer to so much.
“And you can only start by
really loving yourself. And it’s
something I’m working on, just
trying to fill my body with love
and happiness. And I believe that
that will help me overcome this.”
Visible
Geology
offers a new
way to teach
geology
in the
NEWS
• By Geoff Sloan
TWO OF the city’s biggest tech
success stories have combined
forces to try and change the
way geology is taught in the
classroom.
Leading geoscience software
company Seequent and game
development studio CerebralFix
have launched a free, 3D web
application called Visible
Geology.
Seequent chief executive
Graham Grant said inspiring
the next generation of
earth scientists is critical to
understand how the planet’s
resources are used and solve
some of its most urgent and
complex challenges.
“This is about bringing
a highly simplified and
conceptual approach to
understanding the ground to
students who are new to the field
to lower the barrier to entry and
make it easy to understand this
amazing hidden world of the
underground.”
It comes as concerns grow
over the falling number of earth
science university graduates.
Seequent hopes the new
software might help encourage
young people to learn about the
key concepts of geology through
an immersive and interactive
Said Grant: “Everything we
manufacture, make, consume
in the world, including
the internet, relies on the
underground.
“And that’s for water, heating,
energy, the things we construct,
the materials in our cellphone.
And without earth scientists to
understand the underground,
these things can’t be.”
Software engineer
earns Apple award
for cooking up app
SENIOR SOFTWARE engineer
Devin Davies has made history
by becoming the first New
Zealander to win a prestigious
Apple design award.
The 27-year-old from
Christchurch app development
company Smudge was one of 14
people to receive the award at
the Apple Worldwide Developers
Conference in Cupertino,
California, on Monday.
Davies was recognised for his
part in creating the augmented
reality cooking app, Crouton,
which is available on the Apple
App Store.
The app gained popularity
after featuring in the Wall Street
Journal and on The Late Show
with Stephen Colbert.
Davies originally created
Crouton in his spare time in
2019. The popular meal planning
app allows users to scan, save
and store recipes.
The latest version even bring
recipes to life using augmented
reality.
“Crouton is a safe place for
your recipes from wherever
you find them – websites,
cookbooks, your grandma’s
scribbled note. It makes it super
easy to meal plan, so your
shopping and cooking are made
RECOGNITION: Devin
Davies received an Apple
design award for his work
on the augmented reality
cooking app Crouton.
simple,” said Davies.
“I started Crouton for myself
and my family.
“I genuinely had no idea it
would take off like this. The
last few months have been a
whirlwind.
“It’s still a bit hard to believe
it’s real. Winning this award is
top of the bucket list for me, it’s
not something I ever thought
would happen.”
Crouton has been downloaded
more than 160,000 times since it
was launched.
A GOVERNORS Bay author will
know in August if her futuristic
young adult novel has won a
category in the New Zealand
Book Awards for Children and
Young Adults.
Melanie Dixon is a finalist in
the best first book and young
adult fiction categories.
“It’s really exciting. Amazing
to be recognised on a list with famous
authors like Tessa Duder,”
she said.
Dixon made the list for
her novel New Dawning. Set
hundreds of years in the future
after devastating sea level rise,
Dixon’s novel tells the story of
a secluded society surviving in
post-apocalyptic Lyttelton.
Christchurch and Banks Peninsula
writers and illustrators are
represented across six categories
in this year’s
awards.
Author and
former literary
director of the
Word festival,
Rachael King,
has been shortlisted
for the
junior fiction
award for The
Grimmelings.
The 13-year-old protagonist of
the story, Ella, utters a wish and
a curse on the same day, unwittingly
unleashing a malevolent
mythical creature with links to
her own family’s tragic past.
King spent 2022 working fulltime
on The Grimmelings, thanks
to a Creative New Zealand grant.
She said Christchurch was a
thriving city to write in.
“I spent many an hour in
Tūranga, looking through books
on folklore and using its excellent
working spaces.
“I’ve also been lucky enough
to take advantage of the artist
studios at Christchurch City
Council-owned Toi Auaha
community arts facility, which
provides affordable space for
artists to work – quite a visionary
project. And of course Word
creates a vibrant hub for readers
and writers.”
King said the Christchurch
nominees were “just the tip
of the iceberg” in terms of the
wealth of children’s books created
in the city.
Renowned author Gavin
Bishop, who has written and
illustrated more than 70 books,
has been shortlisted in the nonfiction
and illustration categories
for Patu: The New Zealand Wars.
A comprehensive, illustrated
history of the New Zealand
wars, Bishop tells the story of the
battles while interweaving the
history of his own ancestors.
Hilary Jean Tapper has made
the shortlist for the picture book
award for illustrating At The
Bach by Joy Cowley. A story
that encapsulates Kiwi beach
holidays, Tapper’s soft-colour
illustrations are described as
having “a nostalgic and dreamy
quality”.
A work of a Diamond Harbour
illustrator is also in the running
for an award. Art tutor Rebecca
Gibbs illustrated Rere Atu
Taku Poi! Let My Poi Fly! by
Tangaroa Paul, which has also
been shortlisted in the best first
book category. Only the author
has been shortlisted, as it is not
Gibbs’ first book.
TALENTED: Author Melanie Dixon has been shortlisted in
two categories of the NZ Book Awards for Children and
Young Adults for her novel New Dawning.
Thursday June 13 2024 The Star
TOP SHELF: Christchurch and Banks Peninsula authors and
illustrators have made the finals in six award categories.
Gibbs said the illustrations
were a “labour of love”. She is
pleased a text in english and te
reo Māori is getting recognised.
Gibbs and Dixon said it
was an honour work from the
Banks Peninsula area was being
showcased.
“There are so many talented
people around here and with
us being pretty early on in our
careers, getting recognised is
great,” said Gibbs.
Dixon said living near the
harbour inspired people to write
and illustrate.
“For me, just living down from
where Margaret Mahy used to
live. There’s definitely something
here which encourages
creativity.”
The awards ceremony is
in Wellington on August 14.
Category winners receive $8500
and also go into the running for
the Margaret Mahy Book of the
money.
Cook vandalism ‘low-life’
So sad to see the statue of
Captain Cook defaced. He
was one of the world’s greatest
navigators and seamen and was
sent on his voyages to further
human knowledge.
The low-life vandals who
carried out these acts would
notunderstand the concept of
furthering human knowledge,
since they act like dogs,
spraying their mark about.
That is the level of their
intelligence.
Whatever their puerile
message is, they could have done
it without ruining everyone
else’s appreciation of Cook’s
endeavours.
- Paul Grainger, St Albans
A huge thank you
Some 20 months ago I was
diagnosed with a disease that
seems to appear far too regularly
these days.
However, this letter is not
all about me but is about the
excellent care I have received
from, primarily, Pacific
Radiology Southern Cross,
Burwood Radiology plus the
respiratory, urology, radiation
and oncology units
at Christchurch Hospital.
The doctors, nurses and staff
have all been so professional in
their approach and we have also
John’s Field of dreams
Volunteering at the Air Force Museum of
New Zealand has more than satisfied John
Field’s ambition to find a role with purpose,
mental stimulation and connection with
people.
“It’s far exceeded my expectations, it
is a joy to come to volunteer,’’ one of the
museum’s newest volunteer guides says.
John never served in the forces but grew
up at air bases. His father was a fighter
pilot in the RNZAF during the war in the
Pacific, and then served in the RAF after
the war.
So, when John finally retired after a long
career teaching and latterly in property
management, he thought volunteering at
the museum was a way to honour his dad’s
service.
“I guess the core reason I’m here is to
honour the commitment of dad
and his mates for giving me the
life that I’m able to enjoy – they
sacrificed a lot for us.’’
And that family service lives
on in John’s son, who is serving
in the RNZAF as an aircraft
engineer.
“I thought I could make a
worthwhile commitment that
would honour the service of my
dad and my son.’’
Six months after he first put
his name badge on, John is still
looking forward to his shift each week and
enjoys the diverse visitors he meets in his
role as well as the companionship of his
volunteer workmates.
“Most New Zealanders have some sort of
connection with the services, be it Army,
Navy or RNZAF.
It gives me a lot of joy to find out their
stories while they’re here.’’
Like all the good things in life, he feels
like he’s got much more out than he’d put
in.
“I learn a lot and get a lot of satisfaction
from talking to the other guides – who
willingly share their knowledge. It’s like a
university 101 course every day!’’
He also likes the flexibility being part of
a large team brings with the ability to move
shifts to fit around other commitments.
Surging UC staying focused
on securing spot in playoffs
• By Sam Coughlan
AN UPTICK in form has seen
Canterbury University rocket
up the Metro Premiership table
to sit behind table-topping
Burnside.
The side won just one of their
first four games of the season
but have been consistent since
then, winning their last four on
the bounce – one of which was
a 37-34 over competition leaders
Burnside.
Head coach Daniel O’Brien
said the side were always confident
the results would come.
“We’ve probably had a tough
draw to start with and we knew
that was always going to be the
case,” he said.
“If you look closely at those
results, one was a draw, and two
of them were losses by six points
or less, against teams that are
traditionally in the top four or
five in the comp.
“So from the outside in, it
might have looked like it was
dire straits for us, but we knew
we were just continuing to
evolve our game.”
O’Brien said his side don’t put
much focus on table position
– the most important thing
for them was finishing inside
the top eight and making the
playoffs.
GOING LONG: Canterbury University’s Ollie Burra shapes to kick during his side’s 38-7 win
over Belfast.
“We went into the season not
really putting that No 1 place
up there. I think last year we
probably took a few people by
surprise finishing top.
“This year it’s not really been a
focus. It wasn’t last year, but this
year definitely not.”
The side topped the table at
the end of the round-robin in
2023 but were knocked out by
Linwood in the semi-finals.
UC hold the DCL Shield but
O’Brien said it’s not the sole
focus of the season.
“Weekly we talk about the
importance of the DCL and
the history behind it. To get
your name on it you have to
be holding it at the end of the
season, and we went pretty close
last year.
“So definitely there’s some
motivation in the background,
but it’s certainly not what drives
us to try and improve and evolve
as the weeks go on.”
This weekend UC take on
run was ended by New Brighton
last week in the ‘battle of the
Bays wary ahead
of FC Nelson clash
• By Sam Coughlan
FERRYMEAD BAYS will brave
the unknown in their Chatham
Cup third-round away clash with
FC Nelson on Sunday.
The two sides have never met
before, which makes preparation
tricky for Bays head coach Alan
Walker.
“We do a little bit of
preparation all the time
on the opposition, their
strengths and weaknesses,
but obviously we don’t
know how they set up,
what they do and where
their strengths and
weaknesses are,” Walker
said.
“So we’ve got to focus on
ourselves more than anything.”
FC Nelson caused an upset
against Southern League side
Nelson Suburbs in the last round
of the Chatham Cup, coming
from behind to win 2-1.
Walker said he anticipated
Alan
Walker
a tough test against the side,
who play in the Nelson Bays
premiership – a step below the
Southern League.
“I know that they’ve got some
good players because I know
some of them. The likes of Billy
Scott, Labu Pan, Mark Johnson,
Wesley Olea – there’s
four of them that we
know of that are all good
players.
“So, they’ll be decent.”
The Chatham Cup
is arguably the last
competition Bays have
left to play for – they’re
comfortably placed midtable
in the Southern
League and were knocked out
of the English Cup by defending
champions Christchurch United
on Tuesday night, losing 2-1.
Walker said the potential of a
bumper tie against a team from
the North Island would be a big
motivator for his side.
The earliest they can meet a
team from outside the Mainland
region is the quarter-finals in
the fifth round – Chatham Cup
matches are played between local
teams before then.
“We’ve got a talented group.
We’ve got a lot of good young
players as well,” Walker said.
“To give them the opportunity
of pitting themselves against
some of the better teams from
the north, that’s got to be the
target.
It has rocketed the Kaiapoi club
Linwood have won the
Sub-zero training worth the effort
for Henley-bound rowing crews
• By Jessica Tavendale
AVON ROWERS are just weeks
away from competing in one of
the most prestigious regattas in
the world.
The club is sending men’s and
women’s eights to the Henley
Royal Regatta on the River
Thames in Oxfordshire.
It attracts more than 300,000
visitors each year to watch 300
races spread across six days of
elite competition. The regatta
includes events for the top clubs,
schools, universities and national
teams across the world..
Elite rowers often compete at
the regatta as a build up to the
Olympics.
“It’s an exciting opportunity,
we are walking into the unknown
a little bit”, said Avon
Rowing Club manager and head
coach of the men’s crew travelling
to Henley, Logan Keys.
“This is the second time the
club has attended Henley and
the first with both a men’s and a
women’s crew.”
Avon sent a men’s eight in
2017. They were eliminated in the
first round.
New Zealand elite rowers
regularly attend the regatta but
clubs sending crews to the event
is rare.
Avon crew member Arlia
O’Sullivan said training in a
New Zealand winter for the
northern hemisphere racing
wasn’t fun.
“Winter is pretty horrible . . .
initially I can’t be bothered but
once I get out there and warm up
after a lap or two I’m fine, but I
definitely do miss the summer,”
she said.
Because four of the women’s
eight study in Dunedin, training
together is a challenge.
“It’s cold for us training in
Christchurch but those girls in
Dunedin are on a whole different
level of cold,” said O’Sullivan.
The crew take turns driving
to Dunedin or Christchurch so
they can all train in the boat
together. Occasionally they have
met in the middle to train at
Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel.
“Our training camps in Twizel
are next level. Nobody wants to
go out rowing when it’s minus
four degrees and your oar is
completely frosted over,” said cox
Bella Murray.
“But that’s when we remember
our why, and we push through it
as a squad.
“I do think that while the
girls are managing university
and work, it’s been pretty
challenging for them to keep up
good standards with training
TRAINING: Arlia O’Sullivan, left, Saskia Klinkenberg, Bella Murray, Manaia Butler and Katie
Bell are part of the Avon eight who have endured winter training sessions, including
in sub-zero temperatures at Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel, on their way to the prestigious
Henley Royal Regatta.
and eating and sleeping enough
. . . [but] they’re a bunch of
determined girls, they do it and
they get it done,” said Murray.
“The training has been a step
up for the girls. They are used to
doing 16kms in a summer season
session. Now they are doing up
to 24km in a single session,” said
Murray.
It is costing each rower about
$5000 to get to Henley.
Said Keys: “It’s an expensive
endeavour but potentially a once
in a lifetime opportunity”.

Penney’s future in hands of his players
Bevan Sisson
Rugby matters
I AM OF an age where you were
sent home with a report card that
needed to be signed off by your
parents. Regular comments on
mine were: “Needs to try harder
– easily distracted C–.”
What would Rob Penney’s
report card mention after the
2024 Super Rugby season?
Penney played his club rugby
for the mighty Burnside team
before playing more than 100
games for Canterbury.
He then turned out for Marlborough,
before embarking on a
coaching career which involved
roles as Crusaders assistant coach
in 2005, Canterbury head coach,
NZ U20s, Munster in Ireland, the
Shining Arcs in Japan, then the
Waratahs, back to Japan and now
at the Crusaders for 2024.
The last few months would
no doubt have been his most
challenging; arriving back to a
province he has deep connections
with, and also a public which
doesn’t take losing easily.
With a well-documented injury
list and high profile players gone
to greener pastures, it didn’t
exactly create the perfect start.
ROUGH START: After a debut Super Rugby season to forget, questions are being asked about
Crusaders coach Rob Penney’s future with the franchise.
PHOTO: GETTY
But injuries and retirements
are part of the game and other
franchises were similarly hit.
One factor to consider is the
coaching set-up.
It is important a coaching
group has a similar philosophy
regarding selections, game plans,
and culture. That’s why the likes
of Joe Schmidt added Mike Cron
to the Australian set up; Tony
Brown stayed loyal to Jamie
Joseph and Scott Robertson has
surrounded himself with coaches
he knows and trusts.
Once you have created a
coaching and management
group, you tend to take them
with you as you progress.
Penney stepped into a coaching
group like an arranged marriage.
Already locked in were Dan
Perrin, James Marshall, Matt
Todd and Tamati Ellison, who
has been part of the Crusaders
set-up since 2021.
Did that combination click?
With the added pressure of
Sisson’s views. Email
barry@starmedia.kiwi
Keep responses to 200
words or less
losing, did it create some internal
finger pointing which then added
to the lack of cohesion?
Teams pick up when not all
is right within the management
group and small cliques can
develop as players back their
favourites.
When the Crusaders board
meet to do their inevitable report
and discuss the look of the next
few years, the player reviews
will be paramount to how long
Penney calls Rugby Park home.
If the players’ leadership group
highlight a concern with regard
to selection strategies, game plan
confusion, and a fractured culture,
then his time is done.
If it shows the coaching group
is in sync with each other, the
atmosphere was great and it was
just a on-off year with a number
of outside factors, then he stays.
Does Penney deserve to see out
his contract? I believe so.
Aside from Ellison, who is
spoken highly of within the
playing group and is respected
enough that Robertson
added him to the All Black
management team, Penney
should pick his own coaching
set up and re-advertise the other
assistant roles.
If he believes the group he has
is the one for him, then great.
They can move forward. If, deep
down, he knows they didn’t click
then he should be allowed to
move them on.
At the end of the day it’s his
name in the headlines so he deserves
to control his own destiny.
My report card rating for
Penney: C+. Has room for
improvement.
Women’s rugby ‘a different product’
Star News Facebook
page commenters
react to Sisson’s column
last week on women’s
rugby
Super Rugby Aupiki was just
a poor product. The standard is
pretty low. If it can’t earn enough
to cover its costs, changes are
needed. Yes, NPC needs some
hard decisions taken too. Back to
an amateur competition maybe
played in zones with a national
playoff? Maybe women’s game
needs to focus on sevens where
they are actually quite good?
- Steve Walsh
I’m trying to get my head
around the logic in this opinion
article. Professional women’s
rugby is new to the scene in New
Zealand. It provides a different
rugby product. Let it find itself
and let the public show what they
want. Personally, I enjoy Aupiki
as a rugby watch. It brings back a
lot of the aspects of the game lost
in top level men’s professional
code.
- Rick Horsfall
In professional sport, money
matters. Does the product on
the field generate money off
the field? If it doesn’t, then a
timeline/forecast for when that
can happen is pretty important.
If that forecast isn’t met, then
it’s gotta go. Look at the ARU
UNSUSTAINABLE: A
crowd of only 2500
turned out to watch
Matutū play the Blues
in Invercargill in March.
PHOTO: GETTY
situation with Melbourne, an
unsustainable team that is now
binned.
What is very probable is the
more profitable men’s game props
up the women’s name, à la NBA
and WNBA. How long can NZR
sustain that though?
- Matt Carnihan
First off, as for Matatū, the
South Island has traditionally
played in white jerseys, not the
current budget teal look. Which,
to be honest, looks nothing more
then a training jersey at best.
Yes, image and quality product
is important. The women’s
game has been focused more
on personalities that in most
cases do not resonate with the
public. We need four teams and
we can sustain four teams with
a genuine, trans-Tasman comp,
played alongside the men’s comp.
Otherwise, once the Warriors
field a women’s team next year,
the horse will have bolted.
- Paul Steele
Pathetic analysis of women’s
game. Men’s crowds are crap!
You obviously haven’t heard
of plans of sponsorship in the
future. NZR will most probably
spend their share on elite. Stuff
the grassroots.
- Gabe Grace
It’s time to cut this fair PC
crap. Let’s be honest here, it’s
all paid for via the men’s comp.
The skills are poor, if not on
the embarrassing side. I’m all
for participating, but in no way
should rugby be a professional
sport for women.
- Darren O’Leary
The NZRFU has underfunded
the women’s game for years. They
have set up a not fit-for-purpose
Aupiki competition that is
making it difficult for the Black
Ferns 15s to keep up with the
might of what the English and
France rugby unions are doing.
I do believe that the attitude
of New Zealand needs to change
towards women’s rugby and see it
for what it is – rugby.
In England, they get it. Punters
turn up because they love rugby
as a game. They get a lot of
publicity and people are invested
in them as players.
I think the NZRFU needs to
make it a priority for a Aupiki
competition and make it easier
for people to buy supporters’ gear
to develop that brand awareness
and tribalism that other teams
enjoy.
- Shelley Guðmundsdóttir
It is sport and needs to be
looked at differently. If you get
rid of every sport that doesn’t
make money we will only have
the ABs and where are they
going to come from as every
team under them does not make
money. Maybe cut back on the
number of assistants and hangers
on that are getting paid.
- Brian Johnstone
Doesn’t matter how you spin it,
women’s rugby is a bloody joke.
Running one off then dropping
the ball or knocking on. So
bloody boring I wouldn’t go if
you gave me tickets to a box with
free beer. Watching the grass
grow is more interesting.
- Jim Smith
I bet you no one can name
the starting 15 from their local
Aupiki side, because no one cares
and a very small number of those
have probably ever been to a
game live too.
A SPOT IN the Super Rugby
Pacific final will be up for
grabs tomorrow night when
the Blues welcome the ACT
Brumbies to Eden Park.
The action will then
continue on Saturday when the
Hurricanes take on the Chiefs
at Sky Stadium in Wellington.
The Blues and Brumbies
kick off at 7.05pm while the
Hurricanes and Chiefs game
will start at 4.35pm in front of
what is expected to be a sellout
crowd.
The Chiefs were first to book
their semi-final berth with
a win over the Queensland
Reds last Friday before the
Hurricanes secured home
ground advantage for their
semi clash with a 47-20 win
over the Melbourne Rebels.
The Blues cruised past the
Fijian Drua 36-5 in Auckland
last weekend to secure their
semi, while the Brumbies
progressed with a 32-16 victory
over the Highlanders in
Canberra.
We need your help to fill our beds.
Cholmondeley Children’s Centre has
23 beds for tamariki to stay during
times of whānau stress or crisis. On
average just 17 of these beds are filled
due to resourcing constraints.
Every empty bed is a missed
opportunity to support a child in need.
Donate today to give Canterbury
tamariki a safe place to sleep.
Cholmondeley Children’s Centre provides
short term emergency or planned respite care
for tamariki when they need extra support due
to complications at home.
Cholmondeley is an independent charity
and costs just under $3,000,000 per year to
run. 20% of this figure is met by Government
funding, and the remaining 80% comes from
the generous support of the Canterbury
community.
out in force
for choppers
• By Isabella Adams
AIRMAN RON will be
back out in the community
fundraising for Canterbury
rescue helicopters.
But he will not be walking
90km like he did in 2022.
Instead, he will be collecting
funds outside Halswell and
Wigram New Worlds for the
Westpac and Roa Mining
rescue helicopters.
Ron Towner gained the
nickname ‘Airman Ron’ two
years ago when he raised
lengths of his garden before his
100th birthday.
The Canterbury rescue choppers’
latest campaign, which
will be held in August, is called
Back to Base.
The now 91-year-old encourages
retirees to take part.
Sign up for the Back to Base Challenge at:
www.airrescue.co.nz/back-to-base
complete their chosen distance
through walking, running, riding
or skiing, all while gaining
sponsors.
The distances reflec the regular
routes the air rescue service
takes around Canterbury.
Back to Base Crew chief Rick
Knight said the challenge is
about getting fit and boosting
mental well-being, while
directly supporting the critical
training and equipmen the
$91,000 while walking 90km
rescue helicopters depend on.
before his 90th birthday. He
received national recognition
for his efforts and appeared on
TV show Seven Sharp.
Ron was inspired to take up
the golf course, or the great
outdoors, this challenge is a
chance to push limits and show
creativity.
“Our message is to sign up,
friends noticed him going on
daily walks. She said he looked
like Captain Tom Moore, a
