South & Canal Winchester Messenger - June 16th, 2024
PAGE 12 - SOUTH & CANAL WINCHESTER MESSENGER - June 16, 2024 Beekeeper group marks its fifth anniversary The Fairfield County Beekeepers Association marked its fifth anniversary with a new meeting place and full Beginner Beekeeping classes. FCBA formed in 2019 to give beekeepers in or near Fairfield County a place to mingle with other beekeepers, learn about best management practices, provide outreach to the community about honey bees and the environment, and attract and train new beekeepers. When the club was told last November that it needed to find a new meeting place, the Central Ohio Coon Hunters Club, on Coonpath Road, offered their club house as a meeting place and a big open field for FCBA’s apiary. The Coon Hunters Club does conservation projects and plans to create an insect-friendly field of wildflowers. They were hoping to attract some bees and other pollinators to their property. Each November, news about the FCBA Beginner Beekeeping Scholarship goes out to schools, 4-H and agriculture groups, and to military veterans. The club offers scholarships covering a class, hives and bees, plus year-long mentoring for the scholarship recipients. Then in early spring, before the bees come out of their winter clusters, FCBA offers day-long educational trainings about how to begin beekeeping. The club helps newcomers get their woodenware hives and order bees. Once spring weather comes, the club offers twice monthly training in their training bee yard (apiary) for the new beekeepers. Experienced mentors are also assigned to those “NewBees” that want them. The club meets monthly, providing an educational speaker at each meeting, a chance to win a bee related door prize (all donated) and time to hang out and talk bees with other beekeepers. FCBA member volunteers do many outreach activities, like presentations for adult or young people’s groups and provide a huge display of hands-on artifacts about bees, activities for kids and a live observation hive at many festivals and fairs around Fairfield County. FCBA will have a live demonstration in the bee yard and a booth of hands-on artifacts for the Central Oho Coon Hunters Family Day in June. FCBA also sells raw, local honey from its members. FCBA meets every month except December on the third Tuesday of the month, at 7 p.m. The training bee yard is scheduled to meet at the club apiary on the property, at 6 p.m. on the Tuesday of the club meeting. There is typically another training yard demonstration on another Tuesday in the month, at 6 p.m. as well. Information about scheduled bee yard dates are on the group’s Facebook page. Visitors are welcome to attend a meeting to learn more. Information can be found on the club website at fairfieldcountybeekeepers.org and on the Facebook page, www.facebook.com/groups/fairfieldcountybeekeepers.org. Yearly membership is $15 for a single and $25 for a family One can join online at Square store, tinyurl.com/fcbashop. You don’t have to be a beekeeper to join. CW City Council Canal Winchester City Council meetings are held on the first and third Monday of every month. Meetings begin at 7 p.m. The meetings are open to the public. Council meets in work session at 6 p.m. prior to each city council meeting to discuss legislative items and other issues of the city prior to being included on a city council agenda. The first work session of the month focuses on finance/economic development items and the second monthly work session focuses on service/safety items. While each work session includes specific areas of focus, other items may be brought before council as needed. Obetz Police news Obetz Police Chief Mike Confer reported at the May 13 Obetz City Council meeting that the Flock cameras installed in Obetz have picked up “at least five stolen vehicles.” He also said there has been extra traffic enforcement on Groveport Road and Rathmell Road. www.columbusmessenger.com w June 16, 2024 2024 - - SOUTH & CANAL WINCHESTER MESSENGER -- PAGE 13 Wood and fabric weave a family’s history Years ago, when my grandmother gave up her belongings because of ill health and moved to a nursing home, I told my mother and aunt I wanted to be the next in line for my grandparents’ dining room set. Linda Dillman Places Consisting of a wonderful old sideboard, matching oak table and chairs, and a simple glass fronted hutch (which I didn’t want at the time, but later gratefully rehomed from a cousin), the set was the keeper of so many memories of our small family. It served many purposes throughout the decades and it occupied center stage in my grandparents’ dining room. My grandpa played cassette tapes of classical music on a small, boxy player sitting in the middle of the sideboard. Sunday afternoons were filled with music as my grandma fixed after-church lunches for all five of us–me, my parents and my grandparents. On holidays, the numbers swelled to include my aunt, uncle and cousins. During the week, the dining room table sometimes turned into a makeshift cutting board, where my grandma carefully turned fabric into mosaic pieces she handcrafted into heirloom quilts. Her stitches were so even, it gave the appearance they were done by a machine. I remember so many times visiting my grandparents and seeing a quilt in progress carefully stretched on a frame in the dining room. It was strategically located beneath a north window with bright sun and forsythia framing the view. Throughout the years and thousands of miles that the table set and sideboard traveled with us across America and the Pacific Ocean to Japan, it endured. It was a silent witness to birthdays and holidays in a foreign land, served as a project assembly line, and absorbed the tears of emotional highs and lows. We once had the opportunity to purchase a handsome, eight-seat rosewood table set in Japan just months before we CW Library Branch transferred back to the states. At the time, 1989, Lazarus was selling a similar set for over $10,000. This one was priced at $3,000. Right before we signed the order, my husband turned to me and asked what we were going to do with my grandparents’ dining room furniture. We would never have the space for two large sets, even if one was repurposed. I looked at him, at the beautiful rosewood dining room table, and told the salesperson, sorry, but we would not be placing the order. Over time, I reupholstered the chairs many times, but never removed their original yellowing faux leather covering. I just could not throw away the fabric that once touched not only my grandparents, but relatives I only knew through memories shared throughout the years. Eventually, the glue holding the chairs together began to dry, causing the legs and supporting cross bars to loosen. The chairs became wiggly despite my best efforts and my husband I started talking about getting them repaired. Generally, this happened after the latest family dinner, but the talk went on for years. One day we finally loaded up the chairs–I carted the captain’s chair in my hatchback and a side chair in the front seat and my husband wrestled the rest into his car. He found a qualified and experienced furniture restorer not far from where we live. A week later we got a call the chairs were ready and we picked them up later that afternoon. The wiggle was gone. The chairs felt more solid than the day they first came into our stewardship. They were loaded back into our cars in the same order they were delivered to the restorer. On the way home, I held onto the chair the same way I put my hand across one of our daughters when they were small when I had to stop fast. I don’t know why I did that. The chair was secure in the seat, but I felt protective of it. My grandpa passed away in 1978, a year after our first daughter was born. My grandma passed away in 1983, a year after our second daughter was born. Maybe the old oak chair brought them close to me again. Maybe it made me reconnect with their memories. All I know is they hold the stories of our family deep within their wood and fabric and it is up to me to pass that along.
