PAGE 4 - SOUTH & CANAL WINCHESTER MESSENGER - June 16, 2024 American Pickers return The American Pickers will return to Ohio. They plan to film episodes of The History Channel hit television series throughout the state in August 2024. American Pickers is a documentary series that explores the world of antique “picking” on The History Channel. The show follows skilled pickers in the business, as they hunt for America’s most valuable antiques. They are always excited to find historically significant or rare items, in addition to unforgettable characters and their collections. The Pickers are on a mission to recycle and rescue forgotten relics. Along the way, they want to meet characters with amazing stories and fun items. They hope to give historically significant objects a new lease on life while learning a thing or two about America’s past along the way. The Pickers have seen a lot of rusty gold over the years and are always looking to discover something they’ve never seen before. The American Pickers TV Show is looking for leads and would like to explore your hidden treasure. If you or someone you know has a unique item, story to tell, and is ready to sell, the show would like to hear from you. The Pickers do not pick stores, flea markets, malls, auction businesses, museums, or anything open to the public. Send your name, phone number, location, and description of the collection with photos to: americanpickers@cineflix.com or call (646) 493-2184. Teen Ambassadors The office of Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost is accepting applications for the Teen Ambassador Board for the 2024-25 academic year. TAB — which is designed for high-school juniors and seniors from public, private, charter and online schools statewide, including home-schooled students — offers young people an opportunity to engage with state government officials and discuss issues affecting their lives. “This program allows Ohio teenagers to gain firsthand experience in law and government,” Yost said. “It’s a chance for our future leaders to have their voices heard and to play an active role in shaping their communities.” Board members serve a one-year term, during which they convene twice in Columbus to collaborate and advise the Attorney General’s Office on matters relevant to teens. The ideal applicant is a motivated, enthusiastic self-starter who has an interest in law and government, seeks to develop leadership skills, and wants to make a difference. Board members participate in small group projects, attend presentations, meet with Yost, and interact with assistant attorneys general and elected officials. The submission deadline for applications is Sept. 15. For more information about the program or to apply, visit www.OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov/TeenAmba ssadorBoard. Parental Notification Act Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost is making the public aware of a state law giving parents oversight of their children’s use of social media websites as well as online services and products aimed at children. The Parental Notification by Social Media Operators Act, approved by the Ohio General Assembly took effect on Jan. 15. www.columbusmessenger.com The Ohio Attorney General is charged with enforcement of this law, which applies to websites, services and products that are targeted to children or reasonably expected to be accessed by children. Operators must obtain parental consent before establishing accounts for children under the age of 16. They also must present parents with a list of censoring or content moderation features. When consent is granted, operators must then send written confirmation of the account to the parent or legal guardian. When consent is not given, operators must deny the child access to the platform. In cases in which operators fail to provide notification or a parent wishes to terminate a child’s access, parents should contact the website operator who then has 30 days to terminate the child’s access. If parents are unsuccessful in the account being deleted, they are encouraged to file a complaint with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office at OhioProtects.org. OhioProtects.org features frequently asked questions regarding the law and offers additional resources for parents seeking information on the upcoming regulations. The village of Lockbourne never forgot the airmen’s dedication and precedent-setting service to their country and started work in March 2023 to install a memorial in the village’s Veteran’s Park honoring the Tuskegee Airmen and others who served at the base. “Rob Stroup, author of ‘Crossroads of Liberty,’ approached the village about installing a monument in Lockbourne to commemorate the history of Lockbourne / Rickenbacker Air Force Base,” said Lockbourne Mayor Christie Ward. Lockbourne Air Force Base was named after the village of Lockbourne. Ward said the base is not only part of the village’s history, but also that of Hamilton Local Schools and throughout Hamilton Township. She said so much of the base’s history and historical buildings were destroyed with development in and around Rickenbacker and the village wants to ensure that history is not lost, but preserved for generations to come. Rediscover Lockbourne is spearheading the wall project through donations, book sales, and other fundraisers. The cost of the project is estimated at $600,000 for 10 to 12 black granite panels installed on the east side of Veteran’s Park in the center of the village. “We hope to unveil the Memorial Wall in summer or fall of 2026, which is the 80th anniversary of when the Tuskegee Airmen arrived at Lockbourne Army Air Base,” said Ward. “Funding can be a roadblock. We have applied for Ohio State Capital Budget monies for the project. If we receive monies from the state, we can move forward with the project in the timeline we have set. If not, we will have to raise the money at a grassroots level and that may take time.” On June 12, the village, Rediscover Lockbourne and the Ohio Memorial Chapter Tuskegee Airman, Inc. held an open house in Lockbourne’s Historical Hall and Event Center for the memorial wall project in conjunction with the 2024 Columbus Air Show. “Designing Local is the design firm for the project and is responsible for the construction phase,” said Ward. “We have partnered with the Tuskegee Airmen Ohio Memorial Chapter, Motts Museum, 121st ARW and Hamilton Township High School on this project. Students from Hamilton are providing feedback and have been very engaged in preserving the legacy of the base and its connection to the school.” According to Ward, students said the wall is important to them because it shows how men and women overcame obstacles. They also felt it is important to tell the history of their community and central Ohio, not only to their generation, but to their children, and grandchildren. “Lockbourne Air Force Base was the last home of the Tuskegee Airmen,” said Ward. “No other community in the country can claim that. They were brought here to fail. Instead, they strove for perfection under the leadership of then Col. Benjamin A. Davis Jr. It was the best run base in the country at that time. Their success contributed to the integration of the military. We anticipate the memorial wall to bring visitors to the region from all over the country. There is not a monument like this anywhere else.” Donations can be made through Rediscover Lockbourne at P.O. Box 73, Lockbourne OH 43137. “Crossroads of Liberty” books are on sale at the village office for $20. All proceeds benefit the Memorial Wall Project.
