• By Sam Coughlan
ROBBIE TIMO is at an age
where he should be relaxing on
the sidelines, watching others
get battered and bruised.
But the 55-year-old’s
dedication to rugby and
enduring fitness sees him
continue to battle it out on the
field against opponents decades
younger than himself.
On Saturday the 55-yearold
prop notched a unique
milestone when he ran out for
Sumner’s division 2 side in their
31-20 win over University of
Canterbury – his 500th senior
appearance for the club.
He said it was a special
moment.
“I never thought it would
the atmosphere, giving back to
the community. It’s been a big
Confusing
roadworks
information
sees new
idea floated
• By Dylan Smits
A NEW system for giving
the public advance notice of
roadworks closures in Banks
Peninsula has been floated, as a
result of recent confusion.
In the past three months, there
have been three maintenance
roadworks closures on Governors
Bay Rd, one in March and two in
May.
Governors Bay Community
Association chair John Bannock
said residents have been confused
by conflicting information
displayed on the city council
website and roadside signage.
“They’re very rarely saying the
same thing. So that’s set up an air
of confusion straight away.”
Bannock has suggested putting
city council staff in charge of
communications during maintenance
on critical routes, like
Governors Bay Rd.
Currently, when there are major
roadworks, city council staff are
in charge of communicating with
the public. When there
are maintenance works,
contractors are in charge of
communications.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
The Tuscan Daughter
by Tessa Harris
A country at war. An impossible choice. A woman who will risk
everything to be free. Tuscany, 1942: having moved from England
to the beautiful city of Lucca before the outbreak of war, Lizzie
Thornton adores her job as tutor to eight-year-old Cristo –
despite the fact that his father, Count Antonio de Falco, is
a notable fascist and supporter of Mussolini. Then war is
declared, and Lizzie is suddenly regarded as an enemy in the
country she loves so much. When new tutor Vincenzo Baldini
arrives, Lizzie is exposed to a new secret world; Vincenzo is actually
a member of the Italian resistance, running an anti-fascist propaganda
magazine. Lizzie, desperate to be part of the fight, joins Vincenzo’s unit,
and soon she is head over heels in love. But when someone from her past
reappears and threatens to overturn her new life, Lizzie must decide if she has
the strength to fight for what, and who, she truly wants. Based on true events,
The Tuscan Daughter is a heartbreaking story of one woman’s resilience in the
face of fascism, perfect for fans of Mandy Robotham and Kate Quinn.
and will be on hand to share top tips
and advice and answer any questions.
Event manager Juliet Dickson says
the Home & Leisure Show is the “go
by David Walliams, Adam Stower
From million-copy bestselling author David Walliams comes a laugh-out-loud
animal space adventure.
Chump the chimpanzee was always being silly.
He would: - make rude noises from BOTH ENDS…
- pick his nose with his little toe…
- eat the skins of bananas, hurling out the tasty part inside.
NASA’s scientists thought he’d be the PERFECT chimp to send into space.
Little did Chump know that he had been selected for a deadly-dangerous
mission. If a chimp could orbit Earth, then chances were a human could too.
With Chump the chimp at the controls of a spacecraft, what could possibly go
wrong? As it turned out, EVERYTHING.
Blast off with Chump, and encounter dog space pirates, evil insects, and
the silliest chimpanzee who ever lived in this wildly funny space opera, fully
Bannock believes city council
staff with a better knowledge
of affected communities’ needs
should deliver communications
on these routes, rather than
contractors.
“I don’t think a contractor
working out of Lyttelton would
consider that Diamond Harbour
and Port Levy would be affected
parties,” Bannock said.
He said having the contractor
communicating road closures for
maintenance work gave them too
much workload.
However, city council head of
transport Lynette Ellis said her
team has “full confidence” in
contractors’ abilities to deliver
effective communications to
residents.
She said the Governors Bay
resurfacing work in May “was no
exception”.
“Our maintenance contractors
work on approximately 2415
projects a year across the entire
network, therefore if council is to
manage all communications for
this work we need to rely on our
contractor teams.”
Ellis declined to comment
on the merits of giving council
staff responsibility over
communications for critical
routes only.
Bannock feels the transport
team is missing his point.
“I think it’s unreasonable to
expect contractors to determine
the extent of contacts required
for some roads.”
He voiced his concerns at the
Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks
Peninsula Community Board
meeting on June 10.
“I really think that the council
needs to understand that the
Banks Peninsula area isn’t a
town. We don’t have multiple
detour options.”
The community board
requested staff advice regarding
community notifications.
Bannock hopes the community
board investigation process
will change the minds of the
transport team.
He also said communications
through more channels would
help the affected residents better
adapt their personal schedules.
“Even a poster in the typical
places people visit would be a big
help.”
Banks Peninsula city councillor
Tyrone Fields did not have a view
on Bannock’s idea, but believed
staff would find a solution.
Mid-winter plunge all for a good cause
• By Dylan Smits
A DARING group jumped into
the wintry water of Governors
Bay to help pay for its jetty
restoration.
Sunday’s relatively warm
weather was encouraging for the
45 jumpers who raised $2077 for
the cause.
Jetty Trust secretary Louisa
Eades is pleased the mid-winter
jetty jump and swim met its
funding goal.
“There was a lot of whooping
and excitement when people got
out of the water. It feels really
good to get in the water and get
THERE ARE growing efforts
to preserve and restore the
Diamond Harbour gullies, as
the surrounding land opens for
development.
The three gullies sit on the
39.02 ha block of city council
land, which recently had two
other sections sold for a Māori
immersion school and fire
station.
On Sunday, more volunteers
are wanted for a planting day at
the school gully.
out again,” she said.
Some participants showed
their enthusiasm by jumping in
multiple times.
“We were really lucky with the
weather. The sun came out and
it was actually a really beautiful
day,” Eades said.
Members from the Canterbury
Open Water Swimming Association
also swam to the buoy in the
bay after their jump.
Eades and Jetty Trust chair
Prue Miller also had a go,
jumping off the jetty dressed as
Superwoman.
“It was actually nowhere near
as bad as I thought,” said Eades.
More volunteers wanted for gully planting day
Diamond Harbour
Community
Association
chair Graeme
Fraser has taken
a leading role
in organising
the native tree
plantings.
“A lot of
people walk
Graeme
Fraser
them all the time. We’ve always
got pretty good turnouts for the
planting days,” he said.
Volunteers were able to plant
1000 trees in the gullies last year,
Winter Warmer Deals!!
After the jump, participants
were treated to a well-earned
sausage sizzle with hot drinks
while they dried off.
The jetty trust has $465,000
left to pay on its loan from the
city council, which helped fund
the rebuild.
If the city council includes
funding for the jetty in its final
Long Term Plan, the loan will
decrease to $240,000.
• Donations can be made
to support the jetty rebuild
until June 30 at https://
givealittle.co.nz/cause/midwinter-jetty-jump-andswim
and plan to surpass that with
2000 plantings in 2024.
Since the 1980s, changing attitudes
among residents have led
to an increase in conservation
efforts and an appreciation of the
gullies’ natural beauty.
Also the chair of the Diamond
Harbour reserves committee,
Fraser says the group has
the goal of creating a natural
landmark for residents and
visitors.
Residents were consulted
by the city council in 2021 on
whether sections of the land
block should be sold, and protecting
the gullies was the most
common topic raised.
“People have different ideas
about the development of the
land, but everyone was saying
they want the gullies protected.”
The final conservation status
of the gullies has not yet been
determined, with options
including designating them
as a city council conservation
covenant, or official reserve area.
Once the land sales for
immersion school Te Pā o
Rākaihautū and the fire station
TEAMWORK:
Prue Miller (top
left) and Louisa
Eades were
among the 45
jetty jumpers.
are finalised, the gullies will
receive a new status.
Te Pā did not respond to
requests for comment, but in its
proposal report for purchasing
the section, the school agreed
with “protection and enhancement”
for the gullies.
Fraser believes the city council
and Te Pā will work to protect
the gullies in the future.
The mostly barren school gully
is now the focus for planting
after Sam’s gully and Morgan’s
gully received attention in the
past.
Timo, a schoolteacher at Te
Aratai College in Linwood,
said he received a lot of well
wishes before the game on
Saturday.
“There were heaps of
messages on Facebook
and once I posted
a few more photos
afterwards there was
more photos and things
and comments,
which was
awesome.”
That included a phone call
from All Blacks coach Scott
‘Razor’ Robertson – a proud
Sumner man who played with
Timo in his early days with the
club.
“He called me up just before
lunch and wished me all the best,
which was good,” said Timo.
Robertson’s son Cass was
alongside Timo in the
Sumner team – one
of many father/son
combinations he’s
played with or
against.
“Guys I used to
play with, their
kids are playing
now, or I’ve been
coaching them,” he
said.
“Or they’re
making
their
senior debuts for other clubs
and things, sometimes it is
weird, they’ll tell me ‘my dad’s
watching’.”
With a big crowd down at
St Leonard’s Square for the
occasion, Timo said it was good
to have their backing.
“It was quite a big crowd.
Sometimes they get that many at
club day, but that was good.
Age is unfortunately catching
up with the prop. This will be his
last competitive season.
“I think I’ll just slowly taper
off, just keep contributing to the
team and still help those players
progress and make sure they’re
doing what they should be doing.
“I’ll just offer as much as I can
with them and finish the year off
and then that’ll be me.
“It’s going to be real tough, I’ve
been going there for so long, I’ve
played so many games now. But
I’ll still be able to contribute to
the club, help the coaches and
especially the juniors.”
But if he got a call on a Saturday
morning asking him to fill in?
“Head right to my boots and
head on down!”
Never say never.
GOOD TIMES: Timo flanked by team-mates Greg Digby
(left) and Danny Tarres following a match.
Below – refereeing a junior game for Sumner.
LEGEND: Sumner veteran
Robbie Timo played his
500th game for the club at
the weekend.
Rediscovering history: Ancestors’
History often forgets the earliest marriages between Māori women and pākehā men and
the cross-cultural exchanges which shaped colonial life on Banks Peninsula.
Reporter Dylan Smits spoke with Georgia Hampton, a descendent of one of these marriages
about her dissertation discussing the misconceptions New Zealanders today have about
these unions
GEORGIA HAMPTON is the
fourth great-granddaughter of Ngāi
Tahu noblewoman Hari Tiki and
American whaler Seth Howland.
The 23-year-old’s paternal
grandmother Heather is particularly
interested in genealogy and spent
time about 20 years ago researching
Tiki and trying to find her still
unknown resting place.
“I remember her showing me
pictures. We’d work on ancestry.
com together, so it’s always been a
bit of a family project,” she said.
The research sparked the 23-yearold’s
interest in history and her Ngāi
Tahu roots.
“My dad got really interested by
this stuff. It probably made him
want to do a history degree.”
Helping to dispel myths about her
ancestors and the common Māori
and pākehā marriages in the 19th
century is a passion for the history
buff, who now works researching
items in the Canterbury Museum
collection.
Tiki is believed to have been
born into a high-status family at
Waikākahi pā in 1816.
It was a community of many Ngāi
Tahu hapū near Birdlings Flat.
TRAVELLER: Seth Howland
was a whaler who lived in
Māori communities on Banks
Peninsula in the first half of
the 19th century. During the
attacks by Ngāti Toa on Ngāi
Tahu in 1830, Howland is
believed to have assisted Ngāti
Toa chief Te Rauparaha during
an assault on Akaroa Harbour.
Hare Tiki was captured and is
believed to have been gifted
to Howland as a reward. There
is no known photo of Tiki.
During the attacks by Ngāti Toa
on Ngāi Tahu in 1830, Tiki was
captured in Akaroa Harbour by
Ngāti Toa chief Te Rauparaha.
Seth Howland likely had a close
relationship with Ngāti Toa chief Te
Rauparaha, due to him providing
transport for war parties attacking
Ngāi Tahu.
This close relationship may have
led to him being ‘gifted’ Tiki as a
reward for his assistance.
Tiki being ‘high-born’
may have seen her being
viewed as a prize befitting
Howland.
Howland and Tiki
lived together without
a formal Christian
marriage for about
20 years and lived
in Port Levy and
Pigeon Bay, before
eventually settling
in Okains Bay
to raise their
children.
Though startling
by modern
cultural standards,
Hampton says it is
possible Tiki had
more say over this
‘sale’ than many
would expect.
ANCESTRY:
Georgia Hampton
is the fourth greatgranddaughter
of Hare Tiki and
American whaler
Seth Howland.
mixed union leaves lasting legacy
“Going in to it, you were
always told she was like a Māori
princess, given in marriage.
When you dig deeper you start to
see the different power dynamics
at the time.”
Hampton believes there is
plenty to learn from looking back
at these mixed marriages.
“I think we can learn a mutual
Howland was born in New
Bedford, Massachusetts, in about
1808.
He was an established whaler
new life on the frontiers of the
British Empire, even abandoning
his wife and children in the
United States to do so.
While living with Tiki in Port
to refuse the 1848 Canterbury
It was later claimed the Crown
After discovering her roots,
Hampton reviewed the Ngāi
Tahu blue book containing the
whakapapa (ancestry) of the iwi.
“Through the ancestry, I’ve
started to learn about my, and
our ancestors, connection to Port
Levy and Koukourārata. That’s
opened a few doors for me.”
Hampton was then able to get
an internship working at the
Ngāi Tahu archives last year.
There she met fellow intern
Elizabeth Wells and they
discovered their shared ancestry
with Tiki and Howland.
The couple’s daughter, Huldah
Howland, is a key figure for
people tracing their ancestry
to the early Māori-pākehā
marriages in Banks Peninsula
due to her having nine children.
In 1863, Huldah Howland was
the second Okains Bay woman
of Māori ancestry to be married
in the Christian tradition in her
nuptials to lawyer James William
Wells.
On her death in 1916, she was
survived by her husband and
nine children.
In her 1916 obituary, she was
described as being “of a very
kindly disposition and was
highly respected by all who knew
her.”
In her last year of studies,
Burial site mystery
The burial site of Hare Tiki is unknown despite research
from Georgia Hampton and her grandmother.
About 20 years ago, Heather Hampton made it her
mission to locate Tiki’s resting place.
Despite only being related to Tiki through marriage
to her husband Barry Hampton, she was interested in
discovering a family mystery.
“She’s kind of taken up that research on behalf of the
family. She’s really into like genealogy and pulling those
different narratives together,” said Georgia Hampton.
Heather Hampton went to Okains Bay and spoke to
museum founder Murray Thacker in search of clues,
but to no avail.
“She started a lot of conversations, but wasn’t really
able to get anywhere.”
At the time there were also rumours Tiki was buried
in Queens Charlotte Sound, but investigations by
Heather Hampton found nothing.
There is no record of Tiki’s death, but it is believed she
died relatively young. This is because her two daughters
who lived until adulthood, were raised by another
woman.
There are records of Seth Howland being buried
in Okains Bay Cemetery, but there is no remaining
headstone to help locate the exact spot.
Hampton wanted to understand
whether Māori women like
Tiki were able to maintain their
culture when marrying pākehā.
Men like Howland, who
worked at whaling outposts in
Banks Peninsula, were isolated
from connection with their home
countries.
They even felt far removed
from other migrants in
Canterbury and the North
Island.
Numbering 1000 at most
before the Treaty of Waitangi,
these often ‘rough’ men became
reliant on and intertwined with
the fabric of Māori communities
in Okains Bay, Akaroa, and Port
Levy.
LEGACY: Huldah Howland and her husband James William
Wells. She was the second woman to be married in pākehā
tradition in Okains Bay. Her husband-to-be, lawyer James
William Wells, had to walk all the way to Akaroa to obtain a
marriage licence. Huldah Howland had nine children making
her a key common ancestor for people tracing their lineage
back to early Banks Peninsula marriages between Māori
women and pākehā men.
accounts of intercultural marriage
“Out there, they were really,
really isolated so I think that
would have played a big part
in how close the European and
Māori communities were in all
their interactions.”
Far from the picture of forced
assimilation of Māori, Hampton
found an ‘amalgamated’ culture in
the first half of the 19th century,
with marriage connections playing
a large role.
The contemporary accounts
from Christian missionaries
detailed the lifestyles and
worldviews of male pākehā
settlers, but with a striking lack of
information on the Māori women
they married.
“It was frustrating going
through them. I don’t know
whether it was unintentional
or they just didn’t think that
they were important enough to
include.”
Hampton finds the limited
descriptions of the Māori wives
by the missionaries patronising at
best and insulting at worst.
Pākehā men like Howland who
did live in Māori communities,
and accepted the tikanga
(customs) of the iwi, were
sometimes accused of “going
native” by missionaries and
wealthier settlers.
“It wasn’t the case for Seth, but
there are examples of pākehā
draw.”
Tiki and Howland also followed Tiki did maintain a strong link
Māori marriage customs which to her iwi, even later in life, by
accepted unions based on the visiting Port Levy regularly after
length of time living together, moving to Okains Bay.
rather than a ceremony in
Hampton hopes New
Christian marriages.
Zealanders today will reconsider
Hampton said limited historical preconceived notions about
accounts mean it is difficult to these women and accept their
know what Tiki and Howland’s experiences of marriages varied
marriage was like on an interpersonal
level, and how they spent “You can’t take all these women
significantly.
their daily lives.
and marriages and do sweeping
“It’s unfortunate that we don’t generalisations. They’re all so
have any idea really. There’s only different. It really depended, in
particular, on the husband and
how open he was in engaging with
that ‘Māori sphere’.”
Hampton said Māori women’s
status in pre-European society was
misunderstood by early settlers.
If a high enough rank, they had
choice over their husband and
took part in decision-making in
their iwi and hapū.
“It wasn’t like all these women
had autonomy, but it’s not like
they were all subservient to their
husbands either.”
Hampton said some women
having the freedom to venture
out on their own to meet and
marry pākehā whalers showed
their increased level of autonomy
compared to European women.
The ‘cultural amalgamation’
between ‘Māori and pākehā in
Banks Peninsula did not last
forever.
As more wealthy and established
people settled and Ngāi Tahu was
further alienated from its land,
the influence of Māori women’s
culture on their husbands,
children and communities
diminished.
In a sign of changing times, the
couple married in the Christian
tradition at Port Levy in 1857 and
Tiki and her children were then
baptised.
Hampton said most Māori
women who married pākehā
maintained connections with their
iwi and hapū, but the same cannot
be said for all their children.
Many lost their language, tribal
identity and wealth.
To celebrate a rich family
history, Hampton is helping to
organise a family reunion for all of
Huldah Howland’s descendants at
Tūtehuarewa Marae in Port Levy.
Planned for November,
Hampton hopes about 50 to
100 people will attend the
commemoration, focused
on building connections and
discussing the family history.
During the final phase of
the Coastal Pathway Project,
construction activities took place
in an area known to provide
habitat for kororā, commonly
known as white-flippered
penguins – a species classified as
“at risk – declining’’.
Recognising the significance of
this habitat, the Coastal Pathway
Group, in collaboration with
the city council and contractor
Fulton Hogan, diligently pursued
a project that prioritised quality
while minimising disturbance
to both human and penguin
populations.
From the project’s inception, the
council obtained a Wildlife Act
Authority from the Department
of Conservation, enabling the
capture, handling, and relocation
of penguins by a DOC-approved
penguin handler along the
580m-long rock revetment along
the eastern end of the Moncks
Bay pathway section between the
Christchurch Yacht Club and
Rapanui/Shag Rock.
Rigorous surveys, conducted by
ecologists and a specially trained
penguin tracking dog, identified
active burrows and provided
valuable insights into kororā
behaviour, including breeding and
moulting patterns.
After seven surveys spanning
the pre-breeding and breeding
seasons from August to November
2023, a total of four active burrows
were identified – crucial shelters
for the penguins. Within these
burrows, ecologists observed signs
of at least four adult penguins
Sorry we’re in your way
Expect delays at the
Dyers Pass/Colombo roundabout
We’re making the roundabout way safer for
everyone. Improvements will include pedestrian
crossings, new road markings and safe speed
platforms.
In addition to these safety improvements, we’re currently
making critical and unforeseen repairs to wastewater pipes.
Work will be completed by late July.
We know road works are disruptive for you. We’ll work hard to
minimise disruption and keep traffic flowing.
Ngā mihi nui, thanks for your patience.
