Police rescue seal at
start of ‘silly season’
POLICE HAVE been involved
in the unusual apprehension
of a seal, found on a road in
Lincoln in the dead of night.
At 3am on June 8, police
received a report that a seal
was on the road, near the
Ellesmere Rd and Edward St
intersection.
Rolleston police responded
and after arriving at the scene,
Constable Bryan McQueen’s
coat was deployed as a tactical
measure. From there, the seal
“cuffed itself” by wriggling
down the sleeves in an effort to
escape custody.
“It worked out perfectly for
us,” McQueen said.
He was unsure how the seal
came to be on the road.
“We can only assume it’s
come up the water race from
Lake Ellesmere.”
Once captured, its release
was approved by the Department
of Conservation, and the
seal was transported to the
Estuary, near New Brighton.
But it was an unruly passenger,
doing anything it could to
let police know its displeasure.
“It wasn’t very happy to be
riding with police.
“It was trying to chew up
the dash of the police car, and
anything else it could sink its
teeth into,” McQueen said.
Once at the Estuary, the
officers freed the feisty seal
from its fluffy cell by carefully
cutting open the sleeve of Mc-
Queen’s jacket.
“We sacrificed the jacket to
keep the wee fella safe, and it
was a worthwhile sacrifice.”
The seal’s adventure comes
at the start of a period often
referred to as ‘seal silly season’.
“From June – September, we
start to see young seals begin
to explore their environment,
often showing up in unexpected
places,” DOC marine
science advisor Dr Jody Weir
said.
Kekeno, or New Zealand fur
seals, are marine mammals
that spend considerable time
on land, typically resting
but occasionally exploring.
Although they are usually
found on rocky shores, their
natural curiosity sometimes
leads them several kilometres
inland.
A ROLLESTON couple will have
to fight the Public Works Act if
they want to try and stop their
business and family home from
being bulldozed.
Christchurch RV Centre owner
Tony Stuart and partner Allicia
Beirne don’t want to sell the Jones
Rd property, which has been their
home since 2021. They run the RV
centre on the ground floor and
live upstairs.
They spent about $5 million
buying the property and building
their home and business.
Now NZ Transport Agency
Waka Kotahi wants to take the
site under the Public Works Act
1981 to build a flyover.
The land is set to form part
of the $125 million upgrade for
Rolleston, which the Government
has funded as part of its Roads of
Regional Significance.
NZTA says the project will
result in better connections for
people and businesses in the area,
and make travel times through
and around Rolleston more
reliable.
Couple don’t want to move business,
• From page 1
This month, NZTA announced
it was heading into final design
stages with construction
scheduled to start in late 2025
subject to consenting, property
purchase and funding. The plan
will deliver a flyover joining the
two sides of Rolleston and the
Dunns Crossing Rd roundabout.
Beirne said the timeline makes
“no sense” to them.
“We’ve been told we can stay
for up to two years, but if they
are starting in 2025 that makes
no sense.
“We don’t want to move, we’ve
got our house here, we’re in zone
for a good school, and that’s important
to us,” Beirne said.
In current designs, the flyover
will occupy their whole property,
with NZTA requesting it
under the Public Works Act in
December.
They said WSP, the project
acquisition agent, verbally
offered them $10,000 in
additional compensation –
allowed under the Public Works
Act – to agree to hand over their
property, but only if they signed
on within six months.
“If you sign by a certain date
you get $10,000, but there was no
valuation,” Stuart said.
The couple said the $10,000
was never put in writing. When
Selwyn Times asked about the
offer, WSP referred all questions
to NZTA.
Stuart said they are yet to
look for a new location, because
they do not know how much
NZTA will pay for the Jones Rd
property.
NZTA did not respond to
questions from Selwyn Times
about when it needed the land or
when compensation for the RV
Centre would be finalised.
Prior to moving to Rolleston,
the RV Centre was on Main
South Rd, near the Sockburn
roundabout. Stuart said they
needed a site that was visible
from a main road.
“We looked around for years
before buying this because we
wanted to be seen from the main
road,” said Stuart, adding that
customers often came to the
store because they saw it when
driving past.
Under the Public Works
Act, people are entitled to full
compensation to ensure their
financial position remains the
same. There may be additional
compensation given to assist
with relocation, loss of business
or legal fees.
COMMITTED: Christchurch RV Centre owner Tony Stuart
and partner Allicia Beirne have called the Jones Rd
property their home since 2021, living upstairs and running
their business downstairs. PHOTOS: DANIEL ALVEY
If they don’t agree to sell, the
Crown has the power to take
the land without agreement.
This is known as compulsory
acquisition.
Across the road from the RV
Centre is Tailored Energy Solutions
Ltd, which was approached
by WSP to sell a section of its
land, including a public weighbridge
owned by the company,
used by about 600 trucks a
week.
Owner Glenys Perkins said
they are yet to hear what compensation
they will be offered.
NZTA did not respond to
questions from Selwyn Times
about when it would need the
land currently occupied by the
weighbridge, or if it plans to
relocate it.
In its plan, NZTA says the
Weedons Interchange will be
the main northern access to the
industrial area for large trucks.
It is anticipated other vehicles
heading to the northern end of
Rolleston will also use the interchange.
The roundabout at Dunns
Crossing Rd will be the southern
freight route into and from the
industrial area.
INVESTIGATION: Police are making inquiries after cannabis was found in a building at
Greenpark Huts that was damaged in a fire on Friday.
PHOTO: DANIEL ALVEY
Cannabis found after
Rolleston Residents Association
chair Mark Alexander said he
personally has concerns with
trucks coming over the flyover to
head south.
“Truck drivers pay road users
by the kilometre, which means
they will take the shortest route.
It means you will probably have
a procession going overbridge,
Kidman (St), Tennyson (St).”
Alexander also had concerns
about traffic stacking on Hoskyns
hut destroyed by fire
• By Daniel Alvey
A DERELICT building at
Greenpark Huts which was
destroyed by a fire last week
may have been used to grow
cannabis.
Lincoln Volunteer Fire Brigade
was called to the hut just before
9am on Friday. It was already
well ablaze, and took about three
hours to fully extinguish the fire.
Police are now investigating
after cannabis was found at the
property.
“The fire itself is not a police
matter, however a small amount
of cannabis was located within
the address which police
attended the scene for. All
equipment and plants were
destroyed (in the fire), and
inquiries are ongoing.”
Fire and Emergency specialist
fire investigator Mitchell Jeffery
said the cause of the fire was not
suspicious.
He said the exact cause was
yet to be determined as the
building was too unsafe for
investigators to enter.
Jeffery said the building still
had power and, from outside,
the fire appeared to have started
in the main living area.
“We are going to speak to the
owner and he might be able to
inform us of what was in that
room that may have potentially
started it.”
Nearby residents spoken to
by Selwyn Times said they knew
who owned the hut, but no one
had spoken to them or seen
anyone in the building.
• From page 1
“Young seals, still dependent on their
mother’s milk, tend to venture further
afield during this period. It’s common to
find them on roads, in backyards, or even
on living room sofas,” Weir said.
This year has been particularly challenging
for New Zealand’s fur seals, with
more than 1000 deaths due to starvation
along the Kaikōura coast.
Last year, seals were spotted in unexpected
places, such as the car park of KFC
in Papakura and Bunnings in Whangarei.
In these instances, DOC intervened to
relocate the seals safely back to the water.
“Most seals people encounter are
healthy, and behaviours like regurgitating,
sneezing, coughing, or crying are normal.
“People should enjoy observing them
from a distance and contact DOC only
if they are in immediate danger, such
as being on a road, severely injured, or
tangled in debris,” Weir said.
HOW YOU CAN HELP PROTECT SEALS
If you see a seal that is severely injured, being harassed, or in danger,
please call 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468)
Watch out for seals on roads
Keep dogs at a safe distance
Educate others on how to behave around wildlife
Never touch, handle, or feed a seal as they can be aggressive if
threatened. It is also a breach of the Marine Mammals Protection Act.
Maintain a distance of at least 20m from kekeno if possible, and
avoid getting between the seal and the sea
Give seals space if encountered on or near a beach
Always keep dogs on a leash and away from seals
Ensure small children are at a safe distance and under control when
watching seals
Interactive strategy
for district’s future
A NEW interactive website showing
possible future scenarios for Selwyn has
gone live.
The website showcases the council’s new
long-term strategic vision, Waikirikiri Ki
Tua Future Selwyn, which has been created
to navigate growth over the next 50-100
years.
Selwyn is the fastest growing region in
the country, with a projected population of
140,000 as early as 2050.
The website, which went live on Monday,
allows people to discover how the strategy
will guide future growth and connectivity.
Users can adjust data to see the potential
impacts of a changing population and the
projected scenarios, based on a changing
climate.
District councillors endorsed the draft
of Waikirikiri Ki Tua Future Selwyn for
public consultation last week.
Waikirikiri Ki Tua Future Selwyn looks
at intergenerational well-being, sustainability,
resilience, growth, change and
development.
It is based on community engagement
from previous Long-Term Plans (2021-
31 and 2024-34) as well as the Greater
Christchurch Spatial Plan.
Mayor Sam Broughton said Waikirikiri
Ki Tua Future Selwyn will play a key role
in determining how the district grows
and invests in its various areas and towns.
It will guide the council’s work and the
projects it plans to deliver over the next 50
to 100 years.
“As the fastest-growing district in the
country, Waikirikiri Ki Tua Future Selwyn
is vital to making sure our district grows
in a way that benefits everyone for generations
to come,’’ Broughton said.
“It’s about building vibrant, resilient
communities that are well-connected and
in tune with our natural environment. This
strategy will help us embrace new opportunities
and innovations while celebrating
our heritage. It’s our roadmap to a future
where everyone in Selwyn can thrive.”
From July 1 until August 4, Selwyn communities
will be invited to have their say
on Waikirikiri Ki Tua Future Selwyn and
give feedback.
Findings will then inform the direction
for area plans – looking at where and how
different parts of the district grow – which
will be brought back to the community for
feedback later in the year.
GEOFF HILL has won his battle
with NZ Post to resolve a lost
parcel.
It took a month for NZ Post
to investigate the West Melton
resident’s missing delivery.
It was resolved a day after
Selwyn Times followed up.
Hill ordered a jacket online
for about $50. The tracking code
provided by NZ Post said it
had been delivered on April 22,
but when he went to check his
letterbox, there was no parcel
there.
Hill said it wasn’t unusual for
parcels to be marked as delivered
when they had made it to the rural
delivery depot, but when it didn’t
show up at all, he contacted NZ
Post on May 5.
“I put in three inquiries. One
resulted in a message on my
phone saying they were looking
into it and would come back to me
and they never did and the (other)
two inquiries they just didn’t
answer.”
Hill said NZ Post told him the
item had been misdelivered, but
would not say where.
He also spoke to the delivery
driver in the middle of May who
suggested it may have been stolen
someone for half an hour to tell
WE’RE
me they will pass it on,”
By the beginning of this month,
Hill had still not received a
definitive answer on the location
of his jacket, so he contacted
Selwyn Times.
Within a day of Selwyn Times
making inquiries, Hill was given
an apology and offered a refund.
item as a gesture of goodwill,” an
NZ Post spokesperson told Selwyn
NZ Post said it appeared the
jacket was stolen.
“It seems likely in this
instance the item was stolen
after it was delivered – which is
disappointing,” the spokesperson
said.
While happy with the refund,
Hill believed NZ Post only
responded due to Selwyn Times
“I’d run out of options and I
think if we’d left it, they would
have done nothing.”
THE PRICE to register a dog in
the district is set to increase.
The fee for the first dog will rise
from $60 to $75 and the fee for a
second dog will rise from $45 to
$55.
Early registration for the first
dog will rise from $45 to $60 and
Susan Atherton said the price
increase was to cover an extra staff
member as well as upgrades to the
pound, including better insulation
and more kennel space, as well as
continuing free microchipping.
“We want to provide a great
the best I can do.
“I’m very mindful of cost
Even with the increase, Selwyn
has the lowest fees compared
with neighbouring councils.
Christchurch’s first dog fee is $128,
while Waimakariri’s fee is $133.
The council’s 2022/23 annual
report said 17,326 dogs were
registered in the district.
Dunsandel artist’s rekindled love of
painting starting to pay dividends
• By Isabella Adams
FOR DUNSANDEL artist Brett
Pettit, painting is something he
can’t seem to get away from.
After taking a hiatus for more
than 10 years, he’s found a new
appreciation for his craft, and is
using this time to brush up on
his skills and celebrate his recent
success at the Selwyn Art Show.
Born and raised in Australia
to New Zealand parents, he was
immersed in the creative world
for as long as he can remember,
describing his family as a “doit-yourself”
crowd. His dad was
a builder, and his mum enjoyed
sewing.
Pettit wasn’t any different,
developing an interest in
painting when he was 13. He
recalled going to the library
and issuing art books, trying to
imitate them at home.
By 18, he had moved to
Kaikōura, and, unsure of his
future after finishing high
school, took up odd-jobs
including building and signmaking
to pay the bills.
Then, his neighbour asked
him to paint a mural for their
new business, the first whalewatching
operation in the town.
Pettit was unsure at first, but accepted
the job to help them out.
He also won an art competition
at about the same time.
These events changed the
trajectory of his life, and helped
him realise he could take
painting more seriously.
So that’s what he did.
Pettit carried on building and
sign-making, and also gained his
commercial pilot’s licence, flying
scenic flights for a few years.
He also painted murals and
landscapes around Kaikōura in
a traditional realism style.
He could not name a
specific piece of his that he
liked the most, but described
the Kaikōura scenery as his
favourite to paint.
“It’s not just the sea, it’s not
BACK TO BASICS: Brett Pettit hopes to develop his artistic skills in order to broaden his
paintings in the future.
just the mountains, it’s not just
the wildlife. (Kaikōura) is such a
diverse environment.”
Pettit eventually moved to
Dunsandel with his wife in
the mid-2000s, and used his
building and painting skills to
renovate an 1884 wooden church
into their home.
He reflected on his time renovating
the church, which he still
lives in with his wife and three
children, aged 18, 16 and 13.
“It’s quite a high building, as
churches are, and has all the
lovely old kauri timbers that you
just don’t get in modern housing.
“It had been painted
throughout the years, and so
I was intent on stripping all
that back to the original timber
work,” Pettit said.
“And so here I am up on a six
metre scaffolding, lying upside
down sanding the ceiling beams.
“That was something I
wouldn’t do again.”
Pettit eventually paused his
PEOPLE’S CHOICE: Pettit’s
presentation at the recent
Selwyn Art Show.
painting work in 2012, due to
the 2008 financial crisis slowing
down business.
He spent the next 10 years
being a self-described “house
husband”, taking care of the
kids while his wife worked as a
primary school teacher. He also
did the occasional spot of home
maintenance and landscaping.
Pettit began painting again
in 2022, and didn’t realise how
much he had missed it.
“In the last year or so I have
got back to it quite dedicatedly,”
he said.
“I just really noticed there
was a contrast there (during the
hiatus) and falling back into
(painting) and appreciating
the joy and satisfaction I didn’t
know I was missing until I got
back into it.”
Pettit found out about the
Selwyn Art Show through
Facebook, and submitted his
work to try and get his foot back
into the door of the industry.
“I’m at that stage where I’ve
got a pile of paintings here that
I’ve been focusing on, getting
back into art, doing the best I
can and lifting my game.
“And then (the art show)
popped up on Facebook and I
DO-IT-YOURSELF: The
1884 wooden church Pettit
renovated into a home for
his family.
thought, well, there you go, that’s
just down the road. I’m going to
have to get in there.”
Pettit submitted nine pieces
he’s worked on over the last
12 months, detailing different
landscapes from Kaikōura to
the Mackenzie Basin. He also
presented a print of a painting
he did prior to his hiatus.
Winning the people’s choice
award at the end of the weekend
was a pleasant surprise for Pettit,
and meant a lot.
“To be acknowledged by people
that they like the work, I took
that to heart,” he said.
Winning the award was just
what he needed to get back into
painting, and he now considers
it his full-time job, while also
going back to basics to broaden
his skills.
“I’m just really stripping
things back and just realising
how much more there is to
learn,” Pettit said.
He also is trying to get his
work back on the market, and
says this will dictate if he keeps
going.
“If and when I sell these
works, that will sort of solidify
the direction I go because there’s
only so many walls I’ve got in
my house here,” Pettit said.
“I can’t keep painting what I’m
doing without getting feedback
from the market.”
Breakdown of cost
analysis needed
IN RESPONSE to the letter
from Steph and David Withall
(Selwyn Times, June 12) re
Long Term Plan costings and
support.
Why is the cost for major
projects always published,
but the increase to rates to
cover each item never
mentioned?
Usually, these projects are
subject to targeted rates so
accurate costings are calculable.
When money is borrowed, the
true total cost with interest and
fees with repayments must be
identified by law.
The present situation only
asks if a project has support,
the true cost and increase to the
rates is never mentioned.
Consideration on supporting
such proposals may be different
when it is known how it affects
each individual ratepayer.
- Bill Woods, Springfield
Running stop signs is a daily
occurrence travelling from
Christchurch to Leeston and
back.
The worst intersection is
Weedons Rd crossing Shands
Rd from both directions. So
often drivers pull out directly
in front of you. I have had
numerous heart-stopping
moments. Vehicles exiting
Selwyn Rd onto Shands Rd also
regularly fail to come to a halt.
Some of the worst
intersections could do with
cameras to record and fine
blatant drivers.
At least three times I have
been bumped by a following car
whose driver assumed I would
‘jump’ the lights. I have slowed
down on amber only to have
one or more following drivers
overtake and drive through a
red traffic light.
Final clash a chance for Prebbleton
to exorcise demons of past defeats
• By Sam Coughlan
PREBBLETON have a score to
settle in the combined country
final this weekend.
The side came through a nailbiting
semi-final against Waihora
at Rhodes Park on Saturday to
win 25-24, coming from behind to
claim the spoils.
Now they’ll meet Glenmark-
Cheviot – who got up over
Southbridge 41-35 in the other
semi-final.
Glenmark have been the form
team in the competition, topping
their pool ahead of Prebbleton
and beating them 29-14 in the
round robin.
It’s a result Prebbleton captain
Kerry Gray said they’re desperate
to rectify.
“It is unfinished business.
Having lost to Glenmark earlier
in the season, it’s our chance for
redemption against them.”
It’s not the only box to tick –
Prebbleton lost at this stage of
the competition last year, going
down to Ashburton Celtic before
watching their opponents lift the
trophy.
Having already exorcised some
demons with a quarter-final win
over Celtic this year, Gray said
going one better was the goal.
“We were disappointed we
didn’t finish the way we wanted
to last year, and we didn’t get the
result, so this final has been what
we’ve been gunning for this year.
“We’ve got two boxes to tick on
Saturday.”
Gray believes Glenmark will
consider themselves favourites for
the match – but he was adamant
HARD-HITTING: Prebbleton
centre Adam Birby takes the
ball into contact.
the two are evenly-matched.
“They will believe they’ve got
the upper hand, because of the
game that’s happened in the past.
“But that’s not the mindset we
have. We don’t feel like we’re the
worse team.
“I feel like we’re going in as
equals and the better, smarter
team on the day will prevail.”
He said the team were already
getting excited for the weekend.
“Everyone’s pumped. The group
chat is going non-stop, everyone’s
already excited and ready to go.”
In the weekend’s other matches,
Darfield claimed seventh place in
the competition thanks to their
38-37 victory over Methven, while
West Melton thrashed Lincoln 48-
22 in the 13th/14th place playoff.
Springston consigned Hornby
to the wooden spoon with a 41-10
win in the playoff for 19th/20th
place.
All teams have a bye this
weekend apart from Glenmark-
Cheviot and Prebbleton, before
the Coleman Shield resumes next
week.
Club celebrates stalwart’s service, success
THERE WOULD be few
people who have dedicated
16 consecutive years to the
administration of their sports
club, and probably fewer still who
have won championship titles in
each of those 16 years.
Such has been the contribution
of Heather Murdoch to the Tai
Tapu Bowling Club, which saw
her awarded life membership at its
annual meeting on June 15.
Club president Tim Pavey said
Heather has been an outstanding
contributor, a stalwart not just
to the Tai Tapu club but to the
Ellesmere area and bowling more
generally.
A club committee member
since 2008, Heather has served
as president and trustee, remains
the club tournament organiser,
sponsorship arranger and match
convener, and has been a regular
delegate to Ellesmere Bowls.
Along with that, Heather has
amassed an impressive array
of 42 club championship titles,
including 14 as women’s singles
champion.
DEDICATION: Heather Murdoch has contributed to every aspect of the Tai Tapu Bowling
Club – working as an administrator for 16 years and also winning a swathe of titles on the
greens. She was presented with her life membership award by club president Tim Pavey.
Heather’s involvement has
extended beyond the boundaries
of Tai Tapu – she has been key
to bowls administration in the
wider Ellesmere area since 2008,
including as convenor of the
Ellesmere match committee
since 2015/16 and Ellesmere
women’s selector for the last three
seasons.
She also has 12 Ellesmere
championship titles to her name
and was awarded a Gold Star in
the 2022-23 season after picking
up her 10th regional title.
“The time and effort spent
administering the sport, all on
a voluntary basis, cannot be
underestimated and Heather’s
involvement goes well over and
above what could be expected of
an ordinary club or committee
member,” said Pavey.
“In a more general sense,
Heather is a source of knowledge
about the game, often called
to interpret rules or determine
questions, mentor new players,
act as an unofficial umpire and
ensure that events run without a
hitch.
“Her contribution is exemplary
by any measure and recognition
by way of life membership shows
the club’s appreciation,” he said.
On receiving the award,
Heather said she was totally
surprised, adding that she gets
a great deal of satisfaction from
contributing to the club.
“When I belong to a club, I
expect to be fully involved,” she
said.
“But perhaps what I am most
proud of is the way the Tai Tapu
club consistently punches above
its weight in winning regional
titles.”

Country rugby needs to find its DNA
Bevan Sisson
Rugby matters
RUGBY, AND in fact sport, can
duplicate many areas of life. One
of these is a tendency to create
buzz words and slang to give the
impression they are keeping up
with the times.
One of sport’s latest is “what is
the team’s DNA” which means,
in real speak, what are they
known for and what is their
history.
With rugby going through
a recent review to figure out
how the sport will look in the
future, it is a good time for the
grassroots game to find out its
DNA is.
There is nothing more grassroots
than heading to a club
game, getting chips and a hotdog
and then watching the juniors do
ball duties after playing earlier
in the day. But how does country
rugby’s representative season fit
in the future? What is country
rugby’s DNA?
At present, the local country
rugby highlight is the annual
Southbridge Shield game played
between Ellesmere and North
Canterbury.
It has a great history –
originally named the Delargey
Shield, it was donated in 1922
by Pat Delargey, president of the
Ellesmere sub union and owner
of the Southbridge Hotel. It was
renamed the Southbridge Shield
in 1932.
To hold this trophy has real
GRASSROOTS: The annual Southbridge Shield match
between Ellesmere and North Canterbury is the highlight
of the country rugby representative season.
prestige and for this reason it
should be a standalone fixture
played on King’s Birthday
weekend. The rest of the senior
competition can then have the
long weekend off.
The town competition
currently has the King’s Birthday
round as a bye, so it would put
the Southbridge Shield game as a
standalone fixture.
However, the end of year rep
season for country teams is a
long way from what country
rugby is about.
There used to be Canterbury
Country (best of Ellesmere
and North Canterbury) which
could test themselves against
town’s Metro team but that was
disbanded around 2017. This has
left country rugby in no man’s
land. For the CRFU, country
rugby is like the drunk uncle at
Christmas – they’re not really
sure what tactic to take.
For the country-based players,
is it really a motivation at the end
of the year to play a mix of teams
that don’t have any connection to
country rugby?
At present, Ellesmere and
North Canterbury will play
Waitaha, the Cantabrians and
Canterbury Pasifika, with a
bye thrown in, then finish up
with the important Southbridge
Shield fixture.
Ideally, country rugby would
be a stand alone entity, but the
CRFU would not want the two
sub unions to break free from
the Canterbury umbrella for
many reasons, but none greater
than the registration numbers in
the country region are critical to
CRFU funding.
But is it time for the likes of
Ellesmere/North Canterbury and
their respective boards to look
for greener pastures to ensure
the future for their unions?
It astounds me that our closest
neighbour, Mid Canterbury, has
only four division 1 teams but has
a spot in the Heartland Championship,
when Ellesmere and
North Canterbury have 16 teams
between them and miss out.
A Canterbury Country team
in the Heartland Championship
would bring great benefits to the
region, with local players getting
an opportunity to play rep rugby
closer to their DNA.
Or, allow these two sub
unions to become part of Mid
Canterbury’s Heartland selection
without being classed as loan
players, again allowing local
country players an opportunity
for meaningful representative
rugby.
It is in the interest of both
North Canterbury and
Ellesmere’s boards to look at
what is best for their growing
areas and not be used as a fill-in
for the CRFU rep season.
CANTERBURY will play a pre-season
NPC match against Otago at Foster Park
in Rolleston on August 2.
The Farah Palmer Cup side will also
play the last match of their regular season
at Prebbleton Domain, against Hawke’s
Bay on September 14.
Rolleston club president Nicky Ruki was
delighted to host the NPC fixture.
“Hosting a high-level representative
game will be a first for the club and our
community, it’s a momentous occasion,”
she said.
“With the growth in population in
Selwyn and in particular Rolleston, we’re
incredibly excited to support this event
whilst showcasing our facilities.”
Prebbleton president Jeromy Knowler
said the club had worked hard to develop
a women’s programme, so to host a Farah
Palmer match was “a great reward for all
those who have contributed to that”.
A NEW SELWYN combined secondary
schools rowing team could take to the
water next season.
Darfield High School, which formed
the region’s first school rowing team
last year, is planning to join forces with
Ellesmere College, Lincoln High School
and Rolleston College in competition. The
team will train at Lower Selwyn Huts.
The combined team will be coached by
Pat McQuinn, who coached New Zealand
fours and eights teams in a world cup
regatta in the 1970s. McQuinn coached
the Darfield High teams last season.
The schools will be holding an
information session for interested
students from years 7-13 at the Rolleston
rugby clubrooms at Foster Park on
Sunday, June 30 at 2pm.
It is hoped the combined schools will
be together in local regattas, and compete
individually at events like the South
Island secondary schools championships,
and the national Maadi Cup.
Selwyn District Council shares
vision for future growth
The Council has unveiled its vision and aspiration
for the district for the next 50 to 100 years.
Selwyn is the fastest growing region in the country
with a projected population of 140,000 as early as
2050. Waikirikiri Ki Tua Future Selwyn is the vision
to navigate this incredible growth.
It captures the Council’s long-term strategic vision
and aspiration for intergenerational wellbeing,
sustainability, resilience, growth, change, and
development. It is based on extensive community
engagement from previous Long-Term Plans
(2021-31 and 2024-34) as well as the Greater
Christchurch Spatial Plan to provide a detailed,
evidence-based framework and direction
for growth.
Mayor Sam Broughton says Waikirikiri Ki Tua
Future Selwyn will play a key role in determining
A love for volunteering in Selwyn District
This week, 16-22 June, National Volunteer Week
celebrates the collective contribution of the
thousands of volunteers who enrich Aotearoa
New Zealand.
In Selwyn, we have over 240 Civil Defence
community volunteers split across 30 teams, an
Emergency Support Team of 26 volunteers and a
Response Team (NZRT21) of 35 volunteers.
how the district grows and invests in its various
areas and towns. It will guide the Council’s
work and the projects it plans to deliver for the
community over the next 50 to 100 years.
You can view Waikirikiri Ki Tua Future Selwyn at
selwyn.govt.nz/future. You will also be able to
give feedback from 1 July.
Volunteering for the last 10 years, Lois has helped
open and run evacuation centres for people
impacted by flooding and wildfires. Lois says she
was honoured to be nominated.
“The Selwyn community as a whole thrives on
the work of many volunteers, from sports groups,
through to many other community organisations,
they all help to hold the community together.”
Major artwork a
taonga for Rolleston
Selwyn District’s newest public artwork
Toro Atua will be officially opened at a free
public opening ceremony from 5.30pm
Saturday 6 July.
Made up of twenty shimmering, stainless-steel
figures on poles up to four metres tall, the
artwork will be a distinctive landmark in
Rolleston Town Centre.
Dr Areta Wilkinson (Ngāi Tahu) was
commissioned to create Toro Atua by a panel
from the Rolleston Residents’ Association, the
Selwyn District Council, SCAPE Public Art and
Ngāi Te Ruahikihiki ki Taumutu. SCAPE Public
Art fund-raised over 50% of the project budget
to supplement historical Rolleston funds for a
public artwork.
Toro Atua is another sign of the district, coming
of age, says Mayor Sam Broughton, “not only
are we the fastest growing centre in the region,
but we are also becoming more confident in
embracing and celebrating our distinctive
landscape and cultural heritage.”
The sculpture draws on the cultural narrative
for Te Ara Ātea gifted by mana whenua, Ngāi
Te Ruahikihiki ki Taumutu.
SELWYN RURAL LIFE
Flaunt our rural paradise:
annual Garden Bird Survey
• By Isabelle Teresa
Between Saturday 29 June and Sunday 7th July, can
you spare one hour to sit and gaze at your garden?
You’ll be contributing to an important nationwide
study that has been running since 2007. Basically,
people observe their garden for an hour of their
choosing within that week, fill out the tally sheet
of which birds they see and hear, and how many of
them, and send it in. All info is on
www.gardenbirdsurvey.nz
Manaaki Whenua–Landcare Research (with its
head office in Lincoln!) crunches the numbers,
uses statistical methods to address the variables,
and publishes the observed trends in garden bird
populations over the past 5 and 10 years according
to direction (decline or increase) and size (rapid to
shallow). Results are shown nationally and regionally.
The website makes it easy for all ages to participate
and enjoy. For species identification, there are
excellent photos and brief descriptions of frequent
garden birds, with males and females shown when
their appearance is different. Hear a bird but not see
it? Enjoy the audio samples, courtesy of DOC.
Parents among you will spot that the survey week
includes the first school holiday weekend, so this is
the perfect home activity. As well as the survey itself,
other resources will carry your kids well into the
holidays. Colouring competition entries go online
for voting for the People’s Choice prize. Print out
the stylishly colourful and realistic bird masks. Tips
for creating bird-friendly gardens cover plantings,
feeding and water, and bug hotels.
Teachers will appreciate the curriculum-related
resources to help them turn students into “citizen
scientists for the day”.
For adults, there’s decent prizes up for grabs in the
all-ages photography competition.
Last year, 900 Cantabrians took part. Regional
results showed a rapid increase in pῑwakawaka/
fantails and moderate increase in kererū/NZ pigeon
over the last 10 years, compared with shallow
increases nationwide. Looks like all those local
biodiversity planting projects are paying off.
The survey focuses on 22 common garden species,
and the tally sheet gives space to add two “any other”
birds. Rural Selwyn, this is where we can spice
things up! My rural gardens have been shared with
pheasants, quails, herons, kingfishers, kāhu/swamp
harriers, Canadian geese, black shag and little owls.
Fill out the survey and let’s open NZ’s eyes to the
paradise in our own backyard.
SAD? Turn to winter traditions
• By Isabelle Teresa
Living rurally, nature and the seasons
dominate most aspects of our lives. In
winter, seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
affects many, especially as frosty/sunny
days give way to weeks of grey and rain. In
one sense it’s normal to hibernate, sleeping
and eating more. But for some, this plunge
in energy becomes months of depression.
Fortunately for us in New Zealand,
within the next 10 days two highly
symbolic and nature-based winter events
will occur – Winter Solstice on Friday 21
June, quickly followed by Matariki, marked
this year on Friday 28 June.
Both events have powerful histories and
traditions which, unsurprisingly, have
rise offers predictions about what the
coming year will bring, helping people look
to the future.
The importance of ritual
Consider making a ritual to acknowledge
this time. One of the simplest is the
centuries-old tradition of planting garlic at
winter solstice and harvesting it at summer
solstice. (This works in plant pots too.)
Garlic symbolises health and protection in
many cultures. The simple act of planting
is (literally) a very grounding action, gives
you a positive image to hold on to, and
embodies your hope and trust for the
future.
much in common to guide us through this
time.
Embrace the dark
This month in the Māori lunar calendar is
“Pipiri”, which means “to cling together”.
A Māori whakataukī/proverb for this time
is: “Ka pipiri ngā mea katoa i te whenua
i te mātao, me te tangata”/ “All things on
earth contract because of the cold; likewise
people.” In other words, be reassured
that it’s natural to slow down and huddle
together. After the busy seasons of growth
and harvest, it’s a much needed time to
rest and reflect, individually and together.
Matariki is traditionally honoured by
gathering in the dark, with a pre-dawn
ritual to view the rising Matariki/Pleiades
star cluster. Winter solstice is our longest
night. Canterbury will have just under
nine hours of daylight, with sunrise at
8.03am and sunset at 4.59pm.
In both traditions, the names of those
who have passed are spoken on this night.
Look to the light
Winter solstice rituals were typically held
round a bonfire, to summon the sun.
Nowadays, a logburner or a lit candle are
good options too! Celebrate that the days
will get longer from this point. Matariki
is known as the Māori New Year, with the
rise of this cluster marking the turning
point. The appearance of the stars as they
HOME PROFESSIONALS
Dealing with Canterbury
nitrates
With recent reports on high
nitrate levels in some local water
supplies, the first step is to get
your water tested. Also, if your
water comes from on-site wells,
this should be tested annually as
nitrate levels can change. If the test
shows nitrate levels higher than the
Drinking Water Standards for New
Zealand, you need to address this.
Solutions are not one-size-fits-all,
so approach an expert company
to recommend a suitable solution
for your supply and needs. Flow
requirements differ greatly from one
home to another, and your water
may also contain unwanted metals,
dissolved solids, and organisms such
as E.coli that need to be reduced
or removed. Other common issues
with Canterbury water can include
high iron and manganese, water
being hard and low pH levels.
Nitrates are difficult
contaminants to eliminate.
Sediment and carbon filters
don’t remove them, and boiling
the water actually increases the
nitrate concentration as the water
evaporates.
Ion exchange and reverse
osmosis (RO) are the best pointof-use
devices for removing
nitrates from drinking water. Ion
exchange is a good option for
groundwater and municipal whole
house nitrate removal, because the
waste volume can be significantly
lower than other treatment
technologies such as RO.
Ion exchange devices pass your
water through a tank filled with
resin that absorbs and removes
over 90% of nitrates. It operates
much like a household water
softener. In fact, ion exchange water
filtration is common in producing
bottled water and in-home water
treatment systems. However, it is
not designed to remove impurities
such as bacteria and viruses.
Reverse osmosis is our number
one recommendation for treating
nitrates in your drinking water.
It effectively removes up to 95%
depending on your original water
temperature, quality and system
pressure.
RO is best as a point-of-use
treatment, normally an underbench
unit in the kitchen, where
the treated water is only used
for drinking water and food
preparation. RO units produce
low flow, with some only treating
190 litres per day. RO units strip
out just about everything, even
the good minerals, which is why
a remineraliser filter must also be
used to put the magnesium and
calcium back into the water.
Using RO for whole house
supply requires a storage tank and
pump, and possibly other filtration
depending on the water quality,
which makes it a more expensive
option.
HeatStore: innovative fires
to transform your home
We all know that a blazing fire makes a home feel so
cosy. But did you know you can light up some fires by
wi-fi when you’re on the way home? And set some fires
for a steady temperature overnight?
HeatStore offers many innovative and stylish pellet
and wood fire options. The expert team loves listening
to customer needs then recommending options to suit
all requirements and homes.
Blaze King fires are highly popular for their
innovative and energy-efficient features. Clean air
technology raises the temperature of the smoke to
burning point, so these log burners can last 12 or more
hours without having to be stoked. And excitingly,
new catalytic technology enables the fire to produce
thermostatically-controlled heat all night long.
“People really enjoy waking up to a warm home
without worrying about the fire going out during the
night. They can then add more wood to the fire when
they get up, turn up the heat and they’re in a cosy home
no matter what the time of the day,” says HeatStore
Business Manager David Chalklen.
“Generating heat from otherwise wasted energy in
smoke allows for a much cleaner burn, easily meeting
and raising the bar for log burners available in New
Zealand and Environment Canterbury’s ultra-low
emission burner (ULEB) standards.”
For a stylish alternative, HeatStore is the sole stockist
of the Ravelli pellet fires from Italy. Their unique design
is sleek and luxurious to suit any décor. New in-store
this season is Ravelli’s Whisper 7, which is whisper
quiet, with no convection fan, and gives off radiant
heat.
Did you know that the advantages to pellet fires
include the ability to obtain instant heating, and to
turn the fire up and down? Pellet burners can even be
operated by wi-fi so you can get them started while
on your way home and walk straight into a cosy
home. They also feature 24-hour timers for added
convenience.
HeatStore’s showroom at 2/472 Blenheim Road has
Cost-effective ways to tackle condensation
• By Isabelle Teresa
While the new housing developments
rolled out across Selwyn’s larger towns will
be fully insulated and double-glazed, it is
still the reality for many of our residents –
as across all of New Zealand – that we are
living in older homes.
Many households are now waking up to
the sight of water droplets running down
the inside of their windows.
This is condensation. Warmer inside air
holds moisture, which is released at the
place where the temperature suddenly
changes. Condensation happens naturally
in all homes, to varying degrees, in all
seasons. Simple daily acts such as cooking,
boiling water and showering can cause
it, even in summer. However, in winter,
people start seeing it in their bedrooms,
and this is when it suddenly feels more
serious.
Condensation can bring health risks
to people of all ages and, in the worst
scenarios, if it turns to black mould, these
risks dramatically escalate.
Assuming for the purposes of this article
that you can’t throw lots of money at
the problem, these actions will make a
difference, for little or no cost.
• Whenever possible, open the window
while you shower or cook. If it’s just
too cold or wet to do that, use an
extractor fan for a short period of
time.
• Each morning, wipe any moisture
from the inside of your windows,
windowsills and walls, to remove it
from your home and decrease the
likelihood of these areas becoming
mouldy or damaged.
• If home on sunny days, throw open
your curtains, windows and doors.
Welcome the sun’s natural heat and
circulate ventilated air. Be punctual
about closing them all again as the
sun starts to go down.
• Whenever possible, hang your daily
towels and your washing outside
to dry. If you have to hang damp
washing inside, put it in a room with
the door closed and windows open.
Logistics:
• Keep beds and furniture away from
walls, so air can circulate.
• Never sleep on mattresses directly on
the floor.
• Consider keeping wardrobe doors
slightly open.
Use the supports available:
Canterbury-based charitable trust,
Community Energy Action –
www.cea.co.nz – offers warmer
homes insulation and heating grants,
independent energy advice, free recycled
curtains, rainwater tanks, funding
for expired wood burners, and more.
Subsidies of up to 100% are available to
eligible homeowners, and some supports
are also available for tenants and social
housing.
STOP BIRDS
Leaves, snow, hail & vermin from
blocking & damaging your spouting
Quality materials: BHP Colorbond steel mesh with unique patented louvre
Building blocks
to a new home
When building a new home, here’s a reminder
to pay attention to some of the fine details...
Anyone intending to build a new home
should have the builder’s contract checked
out by an experienced lawyer.
A payment schedule can also minimise
financial risks. Issues that you may have to
deal with include:
the deposit, guarantees and warranties
If you want to compare building
companies, it’s important to get down
to finer details such as how many power
points there are per room, the type of
windows you are having or which paint
finishes are included.
Questions to ask builders include:
• Do you have a
completion guarantee
and how does it work?
• Is there a loss of
deposit guarantee?
• Is the company a
Registered Master
Builder and does
it use third-party
written guarantees?
• What is the schedule
for payments?
• How are the deposit
and progress
payments
administered?
• Are they held in a solicitor’s trust fund?
• Will the master franchisor complete
the build if the franchisee goes out of
business
• What are the exact specs?
• Are the prices fixed?
• What is excluded from the build?
• Are there any restrictions on
driveways or any other connections?
• Can you speak with clients who have
just completed a build?
Do your homework before you decide on a
building company and you will have a less
stressful time once the building process
starts.
Your guide to all things Real Estate
in the Selwyn District
Let’s get cosy
With the weather taking a decidedly
chilly turn and fewer hours of daylight,
curling up on your sofa in front of the TV
with a hot drink sounds like the perfect
way to spend an evening, right?
And if you’re hoping to turn your home
into a cosy retreat to hide away until the
springtime, then read on – because we’ve
rounded up some top tips to ensure your
snug and warm right through winter.
Keep heat in
First things first – keep the heat in.
This one sounds obvious, but you may be
surprised to discover just how much heat
you’re losing from your home. Windows
- especially older, draughty ones – are the
main source of lost heat in our homes;
so, if you can afford to, replace them
with double or even triple glazed units. If
replacing windows is out of your budget,
then buy some self-adhesive, spongy
weather strips, which are usually under
$20, or window film kits that you can fit
yourself quite easily.
You may also want to invest in some
thick, lined curtains, which will help keep
even more heat in.
Don’t forget your floors
What you place on your floors can have
a big impact on how warm your house
is – fitted carpets help to keep heat in
compared to exposed floorboards.
However, if you love the look of wooden
floors, then a room-sized rug is a good
option to warm things up. A new rug
will also update your room and can be
swapped out whenever you fancy a change.
Accessorise for added cosiness
You can really ramp up the cosy vibes
by splashing out on cushions, throws and
snuggly blankets – perfect for cuddling up
on the couch.
Go for a mix of throws and cushions in
faux fur, chunky knits, velvet and wool
to create a super cosy living space. If you
prefer to keep things simple, you can
stick to one colour or clash and contrast a
range of colours and patterns to add some
interest to your interiors.
Bring in a warming glow
You can create an illusion of warmth
and cosiness with your lighting. You want
to aim to create soft background lighting,
so banish harsh, bright lights in favour of
more gentle, warmer-toned bulbs.
Table lamps are a great way to introduce
a cosier feel to rooms, choose warm LED
bulbs or those that are dimmable.
Candles are another great way to make
things feel homely and relaxing – go for
scented candles to add a subtle scent to
your rooms.
Light a fire
Nothing says cosy quite like a roaring
fire, does it?
If you’re lucky enough to have a
fireplace or log burner, get your chimney
professionally cleaned once a year to
address any maintenance issues and ensure
it’s safe to use. Make sure you’ve stocked
up on enough dry, untreated wood to keep
you toasty all winter long - a “hot mix”
with a good balance of soft and hardwood
is popular – and don’t overload your log
burner with wood as this will create an
inconsistent burn and waste fuel.
No log-burner? No problem – because
you can pick up flame-effect electric
heaters that look just as good as the real
deal for under $200.
