Celebrate Matariki with
Tīrama Mai light show
CHECK OUT new
commissioned artworks, take
home a free tree, and soak
in the city sights illuminated
by Tīrama Mai this Puaka-
Matariki.
The city council’s annual
Tīrama Mai event starts at the
weekend, celebrating Puaka-
Matariki in the heart of the city.
Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Art
Centre, Te Pae and Riverside
Market will feature a range of
art and lighting installations
each evening from 5pm until
10pm, from tomorrow until
Sunday, June 30.
City council manager of
events and arts Lucy Blackmore
said the annual event, which
celebrates the Puaka and Matariki
stars through art and light
installations, projections, music
soundscapes and storytelling is
always evolving with new commissioned
works.
“An installation of
Papatūānuku, titled MOTHER,
will stand four metres high and
two metres wide, featuring a
stunning design by Xoë Hall, lit
up from inside,” Blackmore said.
It will be in the North Quad of
The Art Centre.
“We’ve also partnered with
Trees for Canterbury to give
away 2000 small native trees
over the festival. Planting a new
tree in your backyard is a great
way to celebrate the time of
renewal that Te Tau Hou (the
Māori New Year) brings, and we
encourage people to take up this
opportunity.”
On select nights, the giveaway
will be based in front of Te
Pae.
Te Pae has close to 10 installations,
including new lightbox
artworks and a projection animation
by Ariki Creative.
“Other giveaways during the
festival include light-up yo-yos
from our sponsor, Orion, for the
young and young of heart, and
a free sausage sizzle run by The
Hits FM,” Blackmore said.
There will also be storytelling
and kapa haka performances on
select nights. The “test night” for
Tirama Mai is this evening.
The Arts Centre will be
hosting a number of events,
including Te Waiatatanga Mai
o Te Atua (Song of the Gods),
a brand-new exhibition at the
Observatory tower which tells a
version of the Ngāi Tahu creation
story, as written down in
1849 by Matiaha Tiramōrehu.
The Matariki Midwinter
Celebration invites attendees to
honour a loved one who made
a significant impact this year,
while the two-night Garden
City Mākete will feature local
artisans, live performances, and
food offerings. There will also be
kapa haka in the Great Hall.
Matariki
Matariki, the Māori
New Year, is a time of
cultural and spiritual
significance. The
annual event marks
the appearance of
the Matariki star
cluster, also known as
Pleiades, in the early
morning sky.
When these nine
stars become visible, it
signifies the start of a
new year in the Māori
lunar calendar.
Matariki comes
from the phrase
“Ngā mata o te ariki
Tāwhirimātea”, “the
eyes of the god
Tāwhirimātea” and
translates to “little
eyes”, highlighting the
stars’ role as important
markers of time and
seasonal change.
The exact date
varies each year, as it
is determined by the
appearance of the
Matariki star cluster in
the predawn sky.
But this year, the
public holiday lands on
Friday, June 28.

Neighbouring homes sell on same day
Three neighbouring homes have
been sold at the same time for a
combined total of $3.17 million.
It was no coincidence that the
owners of three properties in
Prestons Park decided to auction
their houses off at exactly the
same time.
The new builds on Timara
Cres were deliberately launched
for sale on the same day and
sold at the same auction by the
same real estate agent, OneRoof
reported.
One of the homes was bought
by an Auckland woman. She told
OneRoof she is planning to move
to the South Island.
The other two homes sold were
purchased by locals.
The listing agent, Harcourts'
Andrew Steel, told OneRoof he
had brought the three properties
to auction on the same day in the
hope of attracting more buyers.
His colleague Jonny Nicholls
also listed a slightly larger livedin
property a few doors down
and ran his marketing campaign
over the same three-week period.
Seven bidders turned up at
Harcourts Grenadier’s auction
room, OneRoof reported.
Steel has already sold about
20 properties in the subdivision,
including five houses on Timara
Cres.
The first home to sell under
the hammer was a threebedroom
property with lake
views. It was picked up by the
Auckland buyer for $1.32m after
ON THE BLOCK: Three new builds on Timara Cres, Prestons,
all sold at auction at the same time. Pictured is the house at
No 41.
strong competition from two
other eager bidders, OneRoof
reported.
The four-bedroom, twobathroom
home a few doors
down was bought by a local
family for $1.0175m after just
two bids.
Bidding on Nicholls' listing, a
large four-bedroom home on the
other side of the street, opened
at $1.2m, with three locals
competing to secure the home.
The winning bid was $1.432m,
OneRoof reported.
Nicholls believed the sale price
was the highest for the street.
A fourth property on the same
street failed to meet the reserve
at Thursday's auction and now
has an asking price of $1.249m,
OneRoof reported.
FOR SALE: The property at 35 Timara Cres is several doors
down from the other two and does not have a water
outlook.
Teachers run to raise funds for sick mum
• By Jessie Curran
TWO TEACHERS raised more
than $1000 a day for each day
they pounded the pavement.
Daniel Kahura and Thomas
Tennent ran 21km before work
for 21 days to support Kahura’s
sister, Kylie Kahura, who has
stage 4B Hodgkin lymphoma.
Kahura and Tennent both
attended and now teach at St
Thomas of Canterbury College.
Kylie, 35, a mother of four,
received her diagnosis in 2022.
Despite the all-clear after
chemotherapy, her cancer
returned with increased
aggression late last year.
“Now it’s just a waiting game,”
said Kylie, who awaits further
scans after she completed
another round of chemotherapy,
blood transfusions, and a stem
cell transplant.
She is now enjoying spending
time with her family.
Kylie said she was “truly
blown away” by the support
from the pair and wider
community.
“I am just so grateful and
blessed,” she said.
Tennent, 33, proposed the
idea to Kahura after reading
a book by ultra-runner Ned
Brockmann.
“I was not an ultra-runner
by any means, but I wanted to
do something to make other
people’s lives better,” he said.
Supported by family, friends,
FINISHED: Daniel Tennent, right, and Daniel Kahura, back left, meet Kylie Kahura and her
children PepaMo’ale, Eli Mo’ale, and Faith Mo’ale at the finish line of the final stint.
and the wider community, the
pair trained for eight weeks
before their first run on April 1.
In the two months that
followed, the high-school friends
raised $22,000 through private
donations and their Givealittle
page.
Kahura, 30, said he was
thankful for the support and
generosity of the community.
“I feel super blessed for the
people who have shown their
love and donated to help support
my family.”
But going into the running
challenge, the pair were not
without their doubts.
“I knew doing them back-toback
was going to be tough,”
said Kahura, who feared
he would fail the challenge
after he experienced serious
achilles tendon and lower back
problems.
Tennent, who gave up many
hours of sleep and time with
family, even experienced a
severe case of rhabdo one week
after finishing the last run.
Rhabdo is when muscle breaks
down, releasing contents into
the bloodstream that can be life
threatening if left untreated.
“We made sacrifices and went
through hard times to help
someone who’s going through
harder times than us,” said
Tennent. He has now recovered.
Craig Watson, head of
supportive care for the Cancer
Society Canterbury West Coast
and Otago Southland, said the
financial burden on families
after diagnosis is significant.
“I know of people refusing
treatment because they have had
to choose between travelling to
treatment, or putting food on
the table for their families,” said
Watson.
He said community support
was vital to get families through
a diagnosis.
Kahura and Tennent said
they were thankful they had
experienced the of power of
people.
“It’s important to celebrate the
small wins,” said Kahura.
Pupils going gaga over pit
• By Isabella Adams
THANKS TO community help,
a new gaga dodgeball pit has been
installed at Isleworth School in
Bishopdale.
The idea came after year 6
pupils played the game at a school
camp two years ago. The dream of
installing one at the school finally
came to fruition this year.
A gaga pit is a pit filled with
sand, used to play gaga dodgeball.
New sensory park a
space to inspire play
A DESERTED residential
playground has been brought
back to life as a sensory nature
play park.
Te Kohanga Taiao Sensory
Nature Play Park opened last
weekend on Brooker Ave in the
red zone after two businesses –
Hummingbird Coffee and The
Green Lab – teamed up to work
with the city council on the
project.
Nestled within restoration
plantings thanks to the efforts
of Avon-Ōtākaro Forest Park
Trust, the new park aims to
serve as an educational hub and
a nature haven to encourage
a deeper connection with the
environment.
Its design encourages children
to discover nature by feeling
Community group Menzshed
gave a helping hand to install the
pit, while building supplies company
Baier helped with materials.
Teacher Vicky Taggart said the
school was incredibly grateful for
the support they received.
“Menzshed came in and built
everything for us with the support
of our caretaker, Ian, which
was fantastic. (Baier) gave us a
pretty reasonable discount and
different textures of leaves and
wood, to smell a variety of native
plant aromas, and listen for the
variety in natural sounds like
tapping on wood and rustling
leaves.
“This kind of opportunity
to invent play, to utilise
found materials and discover
interesting spaces to play
are really important for our
children’s sense of independence,
creativity and confidence,” said
city council play advocate Louise
Van Tongeren.
“The play spaces are
deliberately set up to inspire
children to head off and explore,
without being overly prescriptive
about what to actually do.”
Children learn through all
of their senses – for some that
supported us through the process
by giving us the wood. So we really
appreciated that as well.”
Taggart said pupils are obsessed
with the pit, and haven’t stopped
talking about it since it officially
opened on May 27.
“(They’re) absolutely loving it.
There is big groups of children in
there, every morning tea, lunch
time, and they’re coming in after
school to play the game as well.”
FREEDOM: Te Kohanga Taiao Sensory Nature Play Park has
been set up to encourage children to explore the space
without restrictions.
PHOTO: NEWSLINE
is running and climbing and
others may learn better through
sensory elements, Van Tongeren
said.
“When we provide spaces
that allow for other kinds of
exploration, including calmer
play experiences, we are being
much more inclusive of a wider
range of needs within our
community.”
Once a former residential area,
the park is now home to multiple
wētā ‘hotels’ and ‘apartments’
made at workshops held at
Phillipstown Community Hub.
These are warm and dry spaces
where ecologically important
native wētā, bees and wasps can
keep safe from predators like rats
and birds.
The park has been designed
HELPING
HAND:
Menzshed
helped out
Isleworth
School by
building
the gaga
dodgeball
pit.
to significantly increase and
encourage the biodiversity of the
area.
A recent ‘bioblitz’ held at the
site as part of the City Nature
Challenge uncovered more than
100 different species of plants,
insects, spiders and fish in just a
few hours.
Council community
partnership and residential
redzone ranger Sarah Mankelow
says the Avon Ōtākaro River
corridor will be a green spine
that stretches from the city to
the sea.
“The opportunity to restore
and protect the river that runs
through the heart of our city and
plan ahead for climate change is
a once in a lifetime opportunity.
“Created for community by
community, it is a beautiful
space for all ages and abilities to
picnic, play and enjoy.”
The Avon-Ōtākaro Forest
Park Trust will take on the
kaitiaki role of ongoing care and
maintenance of the play space.
Cross country success for para athletes
• By Sam Coughlan
A GROUP of para athletes from
Papanui High School have seen
huge success at the New Zealand
secondary schools cross country
championships at QEII Park.
Cody Lamond, Adi Pathak
and Bronson Ditford swept the
medal places for the junior boys’
2km race in the T20 classification
while Lee West and Lachlan
Oakes placed second and third
in the senior equivalent, both on
Saturday. Josh Rae won the senior
boys T38 2km race.
The T20 classification is for
athletes with an intellectual
disability and T38 is for those
with co-ordination problems such
as cerebral palsy.
Papanui High sports coordinator
Sarah Lamb said giving
disabled athletes a platform to
shine has been a focus for the
school in recent years.
“We always enter our athletes
into the para events,” she said.
“We go to all the Canterbury
secondary school events that offer
the para events. We’re always at
those events, and sometimes we
are the only school.
“The attitude of the staff is that
just because they have a disability,
whether it be intellectual or
physical, it doesn’t mean they can’t
run or they can’t play basketball,
and that’s what I love about the
Kimi Ora unit that we have
and the events that all our para
athletes do.”
TEAM: Lee West, Cody Lamond, Toby Paterson and Oliver
King after a race at the national secondary schools cross
country competition.
The students’ success was
recognised when the regional
relay teams were selected to run
on Sunday. Of the eight chosen
to represent Canterbury in the
para relays across the junior and
senior teams, seven were Papanui
High students. Both the junior
and senior Canterbury para teams
won their relay.
And the benefits go beyond
simply sporting success.
“What these students get from
that isn’t just about the running or
whatever it is they’re competing
in, it’s all the other stuff that
they’ve learned, giving them
confidence that they’re learning
life skills,” Lamb said.
“They get that feeling of being
included as a team because often
students with disabilities don’t
get the opportunity to feel like
they are part of a team and they
are included in things that other
children their age are doing, so
that’s a massive thing for them.”
Papanui High were awarded
the most inclusive school award at
the cross country championships.
Lamb said it was down to the level
of inclusiveness promoted at the
school.
“Here at school and in daily life,
our para athletes are included in
the mainstream school as much as
possible.
“Daniel (Wordsworth, who
placed fourth in the junior boys
4km), as he was passing the para
athletes, he was giving them a
cheer, while he was running his
own race,’’ Lamb said.
“He was saying ‘come on, you
know, you’re doing really well,
keep going’ and a couple of the
para athletes came back, and they
said, ‘Daniel told us we had to go,
so we went,’ so it’s just really nice
to see that relationship.”
Fresh flavours to keep out the cold
A chill in the air calls for
something warming,
writes Nigel Slater
Coppa, fig and gorgonzola
tarts
One of the ready-rolled frozen
pastry sheets works perfectly
here. If you don’t have coppa, use
thin slices of pancetta, torn into
stamp-sized pieces. The tarts are
at their best when eaten straight
from the oven, while the cheese is
still soft and melting. A few salad
leaves would be good on the side.
Ingredients
Makes 4 tarts
320g puff pastry
4 figs
250g mozzarella
200g gorgonzola
4 heaped Tbsp creme fraiche
2 Tbsp thyme leaves
80g coppa
a little beaten egg
Method
• Line a baking sheet with
parchment. Preheat the oven to
220°C. Roll the pastry out to a
rectangle roughly 36cm x 23cm.
With the longest side towards
you, cut down into 4 rectangles,
measuring 9cm x 23cm. Place
each one on the parchment-lined
baking sheet. Using a sharp
knife, score a second rectangle
inside each one, leaving a 1.5cm
rim around the edges, taking
care not to cut through the
pastry. Chill in the fridge for
20 minutes. (This prevents the
pastry from shrinking in the
oven.)
• Cut each fig into 6 wedges.
Tear the mozzarella and
gorgonzola into small pieces and
drop them into a bowl. Add the
creme fraiche, the thyme leaves
and a grinding or two of black
pepper.
• Bake the pastry in the
preheated oven for 8 minutes
until it is just starting to colour
and crisp. Remove from the oven
and, using the back of a teaspoon,
push the inner rectangle of
pastry down to form a hollow.
• Spoon the filling into the
hollows, tucking pieces of coppa
and slices of fig into the filling.
Brush the pastry rim of the tarts
with a little of the beaten egg,
taking care not to let it run down
the sides of the pastry.
• Return the tarts to the oven
and bake them for a further
10-15 minutes, until the pastry
is crisp and golden. Eat straight
away, while they are still warm.
French beans and cabbage
Lovely lemony, mustard and basil
notes going on here. This would
be good with the tarts above,
but would also work as a main
course salad, especially if you
introduce some smoked mackerel
or mussels, steamed and pulled
from their shells.
I like to use one of the pointed
spring cabbages, though a crisp
round white cabbage is also
fine. I leave the darker, crinklyleaved
Savoy types for the winter
months. This is a salad I like
to serve just warm rather than
chilled, when the flavours are
at their fullest. The beans need
their stems removing, but not
the tender, curving points that
make these late-season beans so
elegant.
Ingredients
Serves 4 as side dish
250g French (haricot) beans
450g cabbage
50g hazelnuts
2 Tbsp tarragon leaves
10 medium-sized basil leaves
Dressing
1 Tbsp Dijon mustard
2 Tbsp red wine vinegar
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp honey
150ml olive oil
Method
• Make the dressing first. Put the
mustard in a small bowl, then
stir in the red wine vinegar and
lemon juice, honey and a good
pinch of sea salt, then beat in
the olive oil, either with a fork or
small whisk. Set aside.
• In a dry, shallow pan, toast
the hazelnuts over a low to
moderate heat, moving them
around the pan so they colour
evenly. When they are toasted
and fragrant, remove from the
heat and roughly chop. Then
chop the tarragon leaves and
basil and stir together with the
hazelnuts into the dressing.
• Bring a deep pan of water
to the boil and salt it lightly.
Remove the stalk and (if you
wish) the pointed tips of the
beans. Drop the beans into the
boiling water and let them cook
for 3 or 4 minutes until they
have darkened and will gently
bend without snapping. Remove
the beans from the water with a
draining spoon and set aside. Let
the water come back to the boil.
• Shred the cabbage into fingerthick
strips, removing the core
as you go, wash under running
water, then drop into boiling
water. Leave to cook for 1 minute,
then drain into a colander, shake
dry and add to the beans. (Make
sure to shake the cabbage well,
so the dressing does not become
diluted.)
• Toss the beans and cabbage
with the dressing and pile
generously on to a serving dish.
Forester still an excellent all-rounder
NOW THE ELDER statesman
of the Subaru NZ family, the
passing years haven’t diminished
the appeal of the latest generation
of the iconic Forester SUV, the
perfect vehicle for active Kiwi
lifestyles.
Versatility, practicality,
advanced safety technology and
its go-anywhere AWD provides
owners with the peace-of-mind
and confidence to explore out
back and beyond.
Now almost six years old, it
still remains a hugely capable and
roomy SUV and was good enough
to win the 2018 NZ Motor Writers
Guild car of the year award. It
was a deserved winner of this
coveted title with its already much
admired symmetrical AWD.
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
Ratings out of 10: Performance 7; Handling 7; Build Quality
for money 8; Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 7.5
Like all vehicles, even the
Forester’s most affordable
iteration, the Sport has gone up
in price by $7k since 2020 and is
now $46,990.
The next step up the model
ladder is the $51,990 X-Sport with
its distinctive orange exterior and
cabin accents, making it the real
standout in the Forester range.
Carrying the luxury model
mantle, and with ease, is the
Premium priced at $56,990.
Hybrid options are offered from
$52,490, and cost just $1k extra in
the Premium. For this road test
we check out the price-leading
Sport.
If a long new vehicle warranty
is important to you, the Forester
comes up short with just a threeyear
unlimited warranty, leaving
it languishing behind most of its
competitors’ new vehicle stakes,
where a five-year warranty is now
the norm.
Under the bonnet is a new but
hardly ground-breaking normally
aspirated 136kW 2.5-litre motor
that continues to adopt Subaru’s
signature horizontally opposed
4-cylinder boxer engine layout.
However, the new motor offers
ample rather than an abundance
of performance. It doesn’t
take long behind the wheel to
appreciate what a smooth and
refined motor it is, especially
Established
since 1982
during open road driving.
Engine noise is well muzzled,
although it sounds thrashy when
worked hard at higher revs, and is
a motor that doesn’t really enjoy
the driver bullying it past the
5000rpm mark.
The motor drives through a
proven Lineartronic Continuously
Variable Transmission is one of
the best all round CVTs in the
mid-sized SUV class.
This Forester is the roomiest,
most versatile version yet with
impressive cabin comfort and
extensive use of quality materials,
while those getting in and out
of the vehicle will appreciate the
wide door openings. A larger
and wider cargo area add to the
vehicles appeal and load carrying
credentials.
The suspension, in unison
with the symmetrical AWD,
offers confident and reassuring
road hold on a range of different
surfaces typical in this neck of the
motoring woods.
With its balance, poise and
agility, the Forester is hard to
ignore if you are in the market
for an excellent all-round midsized
SUV that thrives in our
confronting driving conditions
and weather. The ride tends to
become a bit fidgety over high
frequency bumps, opening
the door for some unwelcome
suspension noise.
A class leading 220mm of
ground clearance means you
will be going off road in places
other SUVs would not even
contemplate. This, together with
the Forester’s X-Mode system to
manipulate the AWD, and you are
in a vehicle with genuine crosscountry
capabilities, that could
open up new adventures in out of
the way places.
