I’m reading this before the General Election 

I am very keen to read the statements from all eight 

candidates standing in the Leyton and Wanstead 

constituency. It will help me decide who deserves my 

vote on 4 July. 


I am not that bothered about reading the candidate 

statements as I will be voting for the party I want to win, 

regardless of the individual standing.

Evergreen Field development approved: 

construction could start later this year 

A planning application 

to build a block of flats 

on Evergreen Field was 

approved last month, 

with developers 

looking to start work 

later this year. The site 

– a patch of fenced-off 

land on Wanstead High 

Street, next to Christ 

Church Green – has 

not been used since 

1967, when two homes 

that stood there were 

demolished. The 

approval paves the way for the construction 

of a four-storey development, including a 

children’s day nursery on the ground floor 

and 24 flats above. A new public open space 

equating to just under half the total site area

A disability awareness festival will take 

place on Christ Church Green this month. 

“Audiences will be entertained by outstanding 

disabled talent, Paralympians Samanta Bullock 

and Lilly Mills and star guests Rozalla, Baby D 

and Alison Limerick. This is the borough’s only 

inclusive and accessible festival for everyone,” 

said a spokesperson for One Place East. The 

Disability Festival in the Park – taking place on 

17 July from 12 noon to 7pm (free entry) – will 

also feature information stands, workshops,

Work to improve the waterscapes 

in Wanstead Park 

The City of London Corporation is planning 

work to improve the waterscapes in Wanstead 

Park. “The first part of our project will see 

the creation of a new reed bed at Heronry 

Pond. Work is due to start here after the 

nesting season in the early autumn. This new 

reed bed will also help improve biodiversity 

and mitigate the impact of climate change,” 

said a spokesperson. The Heronry Pond was 

constructed between the 1720s and 1740s 

alongside the other ornamental lakes around 

the southern and eastern sides of the park. 

A new website devoted to architecture and 

architectural history in Wanstead has been 

launched. “Wanstead is unique as a London 

suburb in having a wide variety of buildings 

of different types and from different eras. 

Most of the information is already in the 

public domain, but I wanted to bring it all 

together as a complete picture and make it 

easy to comprehend and analyse,” said local 

resident Ray Weekes, who has a master’s 

degree in Architectural History from Birkbeck.

for a summer showcase

School’s pre-loved shop

Four homes across Aldersbrook and the Lake 

House Estate will open their gardens to the 

public on 7 July as part of the National Garden 

Scheme. “The diverse garden at 19 Belgrave 

Road is busting at the seams with plants. At 

4 Empress Avenue, the garden is divided in 

two, with a cutting bed and wildlife areas. 

1 Clavering Road features a kitchen garden 

and chicken coop. And 39 Dover Road has an 

Edwardian layout,” said a spokesperson. The 

gardens will be open from 12 noon to 5pm

Wanstead High School is seeking donations 

of unwanted school uniform items. “We are 

coming to the end of the school year, so 

would all parents and guardians of Wanstead

East London Shakespeare Festival 

comes to Wanstead Park 

A local swan rescue volunteer has been 

praised for her work by the BBC Springwatch 

Wildlife Hero Awards. “I’ve been a rescuer 

for The Swan Sanctuary for many years, and 

through this I have built up a great network of 

supporters. This year, many of them messaged 

to say they had nominated me for the 

award, and I was greatly surprised when the 

Springwatch team got in touch to say I was 

on the shortlist!” said Gill Walker, who was one 

of 32 finalists from over 1,750 nominations. To

The East London Shakespeare Festival will 

stage its last open-air performance of the 

season in Wanstead Park on 3 August. “Our 

productions are family friendly and we 

welcome everyone to bring a picnic and join 

the fun!” said Ursula Early and Rosie Ward, who 

founded the touring festival in 2020. This year’s 

production is the romantic comedy Much Ado 

About Nothing, to be performed in the Temple 

garden at 3pm and 7.30pm. “There’ll be 

contemporary twists and turns and audience

The Wanstead Fringe has been given free use 

of two local theatre spaces for the duration 

of the festival (7 to 28 September). “We want 

theatre-making to be accessible and don’t 

want people to avoid putting on their show 

due to extortionate venue costs. So, we 

are very thankful to The Bull and Wanstead 

Methodist Church for offering their spaces to 

us, and we hope to present as many amazing 

shows as we can,” said a spokesperson. The 

application deadline for theatre productions is

The Deynecourt Gardens rain 

garden was established in 2022 

Rain gardens are helping to reduce flood risks 

across Redbridge while boosting biodiversity. 

“The eco-friendly water drainage systems 

feature plants, shrubs and other greenery and 

are designed to absorb rainwater and drain it 

away slowly to help stop sewer systems from 

becoming overwhelmed,” said a Redbridge 

Council spokesperson. There are now 11 rain 

gardens across the borough – including one 

on Deynecourt Gardens in Wanstead – which 

have the capacity to collectively absorb and 

store around 113,400 litres of rainwater.

Redbridge covered 

by four of them: Ilford

Earlier this spring, two areas of 

Wanstead Flats were once again 

enclosed to protect the sites 

for ground-nesting Skylarks. A rope 

enclosure replaced the earlier plastic 

fencing and signs explained the rationale. 

This seemingly inoffensive action was 

understood and accepted by nearly 

everyone as a practical way to encourage 

the safe breeding of one of London’s 

last remaining Skylark nesting sites. 

Not accepted by all, however – the rope has 

been cut on several occasions. The reasoning 

behind this vandalism is not entirely clear, but 

seems to relate to a belief that Wanstead Flats, 

as part of Epping Forest, is common land and 

that the public therefore ‘own’ it. Furthermore, 

there is a belief that enclosing forest land 

must be sanctioned by Parliament through 

amending the 150-year-old Epping Forest Act. 

The roping off of small sections of Wanstead 

Flats is therefore seen as an outrageous 

limitation of people’s right to roam wherever 

they want, and the potential loss of a 

breeding Skylark colony is the price we must 

pay for access to the whole of the Flats (and 

presumably the rest of Epping Forest) at 

all times. 

So, is the City of London Corporation 

overstepping their remit in roping off these 

areas, even to protect an endangered species? 

The answer is that they have every right to do 

so, and indeed have been taking measures 

like this ever since the 1878 parliamentary act 

gave them the remit to manage Epping Forest 

as ‘conservators’.

‘common’ right in Epping Forest. Queen 

Victoria famously dedicated Epping Forest “for 

the enjoyment of my people forever,” but she 

did not confer ownership. The forest is owned 

and managed by the City of London (through 

a charity called Epping Forest). 

Over 150 years, the conservators have 

constantly balanced public access and their 

responsibility to protect “the natural aspect”. 

While the 1878 Act prohibits enclosures in 

the forest, it also permits the conservators 

to put up fences in certain circumstances, 

and areas of the forest also have closures to 

protect them (such as bridleways in winter). 

The 1878 Act also specifically prohibits the 

injuring or disturbance of animals and birds. 

But this isn’t just about the law and sanctions; 

it’s about enabling flora and wildlife to 

flourish alongside the increasing numbers of 

people enjoying the freedom of the forest. 

That’s why there are codes of conduct, 

such as the one requesting dog owners 

to respect seasonal site signage and keep 

dogs on a lead in certain areas, to protect 

rare species. 

And finally, the Skylarks have been on the 

Flats a lot longer than any of us. In 1892, a local 

resident wrote of his enjoyment of “a walk 

across the breezy Flats to watch the 

Skylark rise.” A temporary fence 

seems a small price to pay 

for this pleasure today.

notably that 

of cattle

FEST-ABLE 

Mark Nicholas founded the Laugh-Able comedy night in 2019 to give acts 

with disabilities and mental health conditions a platform. This month, 

he will launch Fest-Able – a festival of 16 shows – in Wanstead 

When I first started comedy five 

years ago, I vividly remember 

being booked with another 

performer who was forced to drop out 

because they couldn’t get their wheelchair 

into the venue. Having a disability myself 

(autism), I was sympathetic to the cause, 

and upon investigating the comedy scene 

further, I found this was a common barrier 

to many acts with physical disabilities. 

So, I set myself a mission to change this! 

With the help of a lovely London promoter 

and local advocacy project, One Place 

East, and with the support of Redbridge 

Libraries in providing an accessible venue, 

the Laugh-Able comedy night was born on 

8 November 2019. 

Our first show was a huge success! A 50-plus 

audience turned up to see so many wonderful 

acts with different disabilities, including our 

headline act, Aaron Simmonds. Aaron, and 

many others, were very impressed with the 

accessibility of the night and how many other 

disabled folk came out to support this event. 

Although, Aaron did comment that Ilford 

station itself was not accessible! 

Even during the pandemic, we continued 

to provide incredible nights via Zoom in 

which we attracted TV comedians such as 

Rosie Jones! 

Coming out of Covid, I continued to work 

with One Place East and Redbridge Libraries 

to achieve several funding bids to deliver 

comedy workshops to local residents with 

disabilities and mental health conditions, 

which has led to said residents performing 

in our monthly showcases. In 2022, this was 

formally recognised by the European arts 

organisation Amateo. 

After the pandemic, the decision was 

made to move the Laugh-Able events from 

Redbridge Central Library to Wanstead Library, 

something that has been a big hit with local 

residents, as demonstrated in May 2023 when 

Robin Ince headlined to a 60-strong audience, 

our highest attendance yet! Robin said of the 

night: “What’s nice is a comedy club where 

people don’t feel they have to put themselves 

into a shape of what a lot of comedy clubs 

expect… and it meant they could be 

themselves… it has a great playfulness to it.” 

This month, we are embarking on our most 

ambitious project yet: Fest-Able. A festival of 

16 shows, showcasing professional and the 

most up-and-coming acts with disabilities 

or mental health conditions on the comedy 

circuit. I’ll be opening the festival on 3 July 

with my first ever hour-long show (Mark 

Nicholas: This Isn’t The Autistic You Are Looking 

For). Another notable performance will be 

Live At The Apollo star Spring Day, who will be 

bringing her show EXvangelical to Wanstead 

on 22 July. I look forward to seeing you all 

there!

New lease of life 

Kavita Rana from local solicitors Edwards Duthie Shamash takes a look 

at the long-awaited lease extension reforms, the implementation of 

which will be on the new government’s to-do list 

The long-awaited reforms to the 

extension of leases have been 

officially approved. The Leasehold and 

Freehold Reform Act became law on 24 May 

2024. It is important to note the new law 

requires further implementation before it 

takes effect and will be in the hands of the 

new government. The act aims to enhance 

the benefits for leaseholders. 

A key change under the reforms is the length 

of term for a standard lease extension, which 

will be significantly increased. The current 

length of term to extend a lease for a flat is 90 

years. Under the reforms, this increases to 990 

years for houses and flats. In the long run, this 

means fewer lease extensions – which attract 

the payment of hefty premiums – should be 

required. 

The act also seeks to favour leaseholders in 

respect of any challenges to unreasonable 

service charges at the First-Tier Tribunal 

(Property Chamber). It is intended this 

procedure will be made less expensive and 

more focused and easier to navigate for 

homeowners. Currently, leaseholders bear 

the burden of legal costs in respect of any 

challenge to service charges, which inevitably 

makes it a difficult decision as to whether 

to bring an action where, more often than 

not, the legal costs outweigh the charges in 

dispute. However, the reforms remove the 

presumption that leaseholders will bear the 

costs of any service charge challenge. The 

reforms also aim to bring greater transparency 

in respect of the demand for service charges 

by introducing a standard form for invoices. 

The reforms will allow leaseholders to acquire 

their freehold in a more cost-effective manner 

and with greater ease. Currently, leaseholders 

need to pay the freeholder’s costs when 

seeking to acquire a share of the freehold. The 

reforms will abandon this. 

The current law requires leaseholders to own 

a property for two years before qualifying 

for a lease extension. Under the reforms, this 

requirement will no longer be necessary. This 

means an extension can be obtained upon 

purchase of the property. 

The reforms also have a significant impact 

on commercial property owners where there 

is a mixed-use (residential and commercial) 

building. The current law only allows for the 

purchase of a freehold in a mixed-use building 

provided the commercial units occupy less 

than 25%. This figure now increases to 50%. 

The above is not an exhaustive list of the 

reforms, and it is important to note that whilst 

the reforms have become law, the secondary 

legislation to implement the reforms may not 

be enforceable until 2025/2026. If in doubt, 

seek legal advice to achieve the best outcome 

for your circumstances in light of the reforms.

I 

was born in Yerevan, Armenia, where I fell 

in love with drawing and painting during 

my secondary school years. Family life 

and moving countries a number of times in 

my twenties and thirties, however, meant 

I did not have the opportunity or headspace 

to touch a pencil or a brush again for 

around 38 years. 

I eventually settled in England and now live 

in Woodford with my family. I fell in love with 

the local area the moment we walked down 

Snakes Lane East towards our new home 

17 years ago. My emotional connection to 

the area has only grown stronger over the 

years, having experienced the nature on our 

doorstep not only through my own eyes 

and heart but through those of my now late 

mother, my beloved husband, my daughter 

and my grandchildren. 

I began to paint again after my mother was 

diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. The pain of 

watching her rapidly deteriorate was too 

strong and I needed to release it somehow, 

so I tentatively started to experiment with 

drawing and painting. 


The one silver lining of my mother’s disease 

was that she loved going for walks around 

the local area, and the one thing she did not 

rapidly lose was her love of nature. Those 

walks with my mother kept me relatively sane 

during those difficult times and also opened 

my eyes to the beauty of our local park – Ray 

Park – and the path that runs along the River 

Roding behind it. And since my grandchildren 

were born, the local parks and wilder pockets 

of Epping Forest, including Wanstead 

Park, have been like a second home to my 

whole family! 

Every flower, creature and scene in the 

local parks and along the river and forest 

paths – their vibrant colours and textures – 

have inspired me greatly and shaped me as 

an artist. 

At first, I was a lone wolf, but over time, as I 

slowly recovered from losing my mother to 

Alzheimer’s, I longed to join the local artistic 

and wider community. So, in 2023, I joined Art 

Group Wanstead and Essex Art Club and have 

since formed friendships with some wonderful 

artists. We have exhibited together and 

supported each other during exhibitions in 

Wanstead Park and Wanstead House, Hawkey 

Hall, Epping Forest Visitor Centre and, most 

recently, the fayre at Eton Manor RFC. I love 

the welcoming atmosphere of these events 

and getting to know the local community. 

It is a blessing and a privilege to live on 

the doorstep of Epping Forest and I love 

painting it! The beauty of it is everywhere; 

we just need to look up and see it.

More than social 

Get your walking shoes on for pleasure, community connections and 

health and wellbeing benefits, says Wanstead resident Liz Hickson, 

founder of Social Knitworks and now Social Walking 

The pandemic may seem a long time 

ago now, and although it was such 

a terrible time for everyone in so 

many different ways, one of the good 

things that came out of it is that it got 

many people active again, either cycling 

or walking. I know I loved my evening 

walks and found them to be a really great 

way to process what was happening in the 

world around me. It was also a great time 

to put my phone on silent and ignore the 

buzzes, pings and beeps that we are everincreasingly 

addicted to. 

I’ve always been quite active but I think what 

the pandemic taught me is that walking 

is good for mental health – and I began to 

crave my walks, noticing how much better 

I felt after. And, over the course of 2020 and 

2021, I learnt so much more, not only about 

my immediate surroundings but also Epping 

Forest more broadly. 

Fast forward to 2023 and I became a leader 

for Capital Walkers. But having established 

Social Knitworks in 2019, I began to wonder 

whether I could also set up Social Walking, a 

group for people who don’t want to travel too 

far for the start of a walk, but who also want to 

walk five miles or more with people from their 

community. After a few posts on Facebook, 

Social Walking was tentatively born. Still in 

its infancy, so far we have done Saturday 

walks from Wanstead through the forest to 

Chingford, and also a walk through the forest 

from Loughton to Theydon Bois, as well as 

two Friday evening walks of four miles, both 

of which have ended at The Cuckfield (which 

is rapidly becoming the social focal point of 

Social Walking). We also teamed up with my 

rambling group on a Sunday in April to walk 

from Leytonstone, across Wanstead Flats and 

into Wanstead Park to see the bluebells, and 

after returning to Wanstead, yes, you guessed 

it, some of us headed to The Cuckfield for 

Sunday lunch! 

For me, it’s great to see walkers making new 

community connections and discovering 

things about the area in which they live. I love 

showing people what I discovered on my 

pandemic walks, from how to get to Chingford 

off-road to the stories and history of Loughton 

Camp (it’s amazing the forest on our doorstep 

has so much history). 

Social Walking is open to everyone. The only 

ask is you must be able to walk at around two 

and a half miles per hour for five to seven 

miles, but we will always include a break. 

In addition to the community aspects of Social 

Walking, there are also the associated health 

benefits, including improved mood, stress 

relief and increased energy (with a boosted 

blood flow to muscles and the brain). There is 

also evidence that brisk walking is linked to 

improved sleep quality and that walking in 

nature can improve self-esteem.

Reverend Reflections 

In the eighth of a series of articles, Revd James Gilder of Wanstead Parish 

explains plans for a Heritage Lottery Fund bid to repair the tower of 

Christ Church, which is struggling to stay upright 

Thanks to everyone who has dropped 

in to see us since we started opening 

Christ Church every weekday from 

9am to 3pm. It’s really lovely that so many 

people pop their head through the door, 

often to have a bit of peace and quiet in 

the middle of a busy day. I would say that 

Christ Church offers a cool haven from the 

heat, but it’s been more of a roof against 

the rain this year! 

Many people in Wanstead have a connection 

with Christ Church. Maybe they were 

christened here, married here, or attended 

funerals here. For a church which is actually 

pretty well hidden from the High Street, it 

is a very well-known local landmark, and a 

constant in the lives of many Wanstead folk. 

Sadly, Christ Church is under threat. Having 

been built in mid-Victorian times (and, 

unfortunately, having been built slightly on 

the cheap!) the building is showing its age 

– particularly the glorious tower and spire, 

where the coping stones on the buttresses 

are now struggling to keep the weight of 

the tower upright. Did you know that Christ 

Church’s tower is actually built of London 

brick? Its stone cladding is really just an 

elaborate facade, designed to make it look 

more ancient than it is! Unfortunately, the 

stone that was used has been eroded by the 

weather (and not helped by some bad repair 

work in the 1950s, which used the wrong 

cement), and all this means we are looking to 

find £600,000 just to keep the tower in one 

piece. This is a very daunting sum of money 

for a voluntary organisation to find – and what 

we are hoping to do is apply to the Heritage 

Lottery Fund (HLF) for help. 

Unfortunately, the HLF ends up with far more 

bids than they can possibly support – so we 

need to put together a really good bid to 

ensure we get the cash. The HLF will only 

give churches money if the project benefits 

the wider community too, and that’s fair 

enough. So, we are looking at finding ways of 

altering the nave interior to be more flexible, 

so it can also be used by community groups 

during the week. The plan is to preserve the 

very best of the existing interior – everything 

in the chancel and the lady chapel would 

remain exactly the same, for example – whilst 

brightening up the back of the church and 

creating some new usable space, with better 

heating, lighting and access. 

It’s quite exciting (and a bit daunting) and I’m 

really pleased that lots of people from the 

community have already come forward to 

help, because whilst change to a building we 

love is always hard, there does seem to be a 

general recognition that, if we don’t act now, 

there is sadly a possibility we won’t have this 

lovely building at all in 10 years’ time. If you

Like the Piccadilly Line, the Central Line 

was extended east and west in the 

1930s as London Transport sought to 

monopolise travel in the suburbs. 

The chief executive of the company, Frank 

Pick, had brought in architect Charles Holden 

in the mid-1920s to oversee an overhaul of 

the network’s stations. He wanted Holden 

to design new, dynamic-looking station 

buildings and to harmonise the various visual 

elements within – signage, lighting, posters 

– to create what we would call today a brand 

image. Holden’s Piccadilly Line stations, such 

as Arnos Grove, Southgate and Sudbury 

Town, were received rapturously in the 

architectural and national press, and visited by 

both architects and transport networks from 

overseas looking to create something similar. 

By the late 1930s, Holden had stepped 

away from designing Tube 

stations, becoming enmeshed 

in designing new buildings 

for the University of London 

in Bloomsbury. He returned 

to design three tube stations: 

Wanstead, Redbridge and Gants 

Hill, which would prove to be his 

last work for the Underground. 

The stations were designed as 

a part of the 1935–40 New Works 

Programme to extend and rebuild some of the 

network’s stations. Unfortunately, World War II 

intervened, causing Holden to alter his 

original designs to accommodate a lack of 

materials and funds. 

On paper, the stations were more daring than 

the finished products we see today. Holden’s 

office produced many different designs for 

Wanstead, finally going for a rectangular ticket 

hall with a ventilation tower. The ticket hall 

and tower were to have glass bricks to bring 

illumination to the interior, as well as a carving 

of St George and the Dragon by Joseph 

Armitage. The finished building doesn’t have 

the glass bricks or the carving but keeps the 

final plan. 

The completed building – which finally 

opened on 14 December 1947 – was 

constructed of prefabricated concrete panels 

finished in grey render with black tiles around 

the station entrance. Its austere finish looks 

forward to post-war brutalism, much like 

the unfinished concrete of earlier Holden 

stations like Arnos Grove and Cockfosters. 

Inside, the ticket hall is spacious and plain, 

with glass bricks letting in light onto the 

escalators. This station, as well as Redbridge 

and Gants Hill, were used as air raid shelters 

during World War Two, with the tunnels in 

between used by Plessey Electronics for 

manufacturing munitions.

Away from home 

In the third of a series of articles charting the experiences of a 

Wanstead-based travel writer, Carole Edrich talks about deadlines, dining 

out and Dutch art, and teases her Wanstead comedy night this month 

While freelance journalists occupy 

the same place in editors’ priorities 

as the Taliban give to women’s 

football, columnists are different. Like 

seagulls, they get everywhere, do what 

they want, and often leave others to sort 

out their doings. 

I’ve always wanted a travel column. Not 

needing commissions means I could be more 

strategic and arrange trips that would feed 

both the column and my stand-up events, like 

the one coming up in Zoology. One recently 

landed! It hit like a gift from one of those 

seagulls. Hard and sudden and a total surprise. 

BlowUp The Hague, I decided, would make a 

perfect start. It fit my target demographics, 

would make for great stand-up material and 

have me home with loads of time to write 

before the deadline. 

But within hours of the trip’s confirmation, 

Editor-Arcee called to ask if I could deliver it 

three whole weeks earlier. My mouth said: 

“Yes, of course!” while my head was going 

‘aaargh!’ and I went into such a big spin that 

it took some days to locate my wits, put them 

back in their place, and decide on my column’s 

new theme. 

Around The World in 18 Plates would have 

me eating out in London as research, which 

would be fun to do with my friends. We 

visited Badiani Gelato (smooth, traditional, 

tasty Italian yum in Canary Wharf), Paro in 

Covent Garden (an East Ender’s spicy ode to 

Calcutta with stops at Iran, Goa and Bethnal 

Green) and Elondi (a perfectly portioned, 

mouth-wateringly wonderful Sunday 

lunch in a light and airy spa-like haven in 

Stratford Westfield). However, despite the 

magic words ‘press’ and ‘urgent’ and more 

than 50 emails, my gastronomic research 

moved forward at a similar speed to that of a 

heavily drugged snail. 

I changed the theme again to ‘getting lost in 

London’, filed to my deadline, and hated every 

word. Next morning I woke up in a sweat, 

worked on it until I only hated every other 

word, and submitted the new, marginally less 

awful version at OMG in the morning. 

I went to BlowUp The Hague anyway. It’s 

not a series of Dutch demolitions or a vivid 

explosion of tulips but an annual arts festival. 

This year, a lush, environmentally sensitive, 

temporary pontoon gallery of inflated 

sculptures by great Dutch designers. I’ll use 

it – and the vibe of the city – as a metaphor 

for the Dutch approach to sustainability. And 

there was gin. 

From perfect start to perfect storm, I got the 

thing written on time. That’s not the end of 

the story. To discover the last twist, taste four 

great wines and hear more of my mad travel

POLICING BY CONSENT 

Inspector Chris Russell, who oversees neighbourhood policing for north 

Redbridge, reflects on the Hainault sword attack and emphasises his 

desire for police officers to earn trust in the community 

Hello again from your Neighbourhood 

Inspector for north Redbridge. I 

was asked following my last article 

in March: “What does north Redbridge 

actually cover?” So, to clarify, I cover all 

Redbridge wards north of the A12 (plus 

Wanstead Park ward). 

In April, we saw the horrific sword attack 

in Hainault where 14-year-old Daniel 

Anjorin tragically lost his life on his way to 

school. Four other people suffered serious 

injuries, including two police officers, who 

were bravely protecting the public and 

attempting to arrest the attacker. My Safer 

Neighbourhoods Teams (SNT) were on scene 

within minutes, along with colleagues from 

emergency response and the town centre 

teams, and the suspect was arrested and 

taken to custody. He has since been charged 

and remanded to prison and now awaits 

trial. My thoughts go out to all those who 

were affected by this horrendous crime and 

continue to piece their lives back together 

since that awful day. For anyone who would

directly or indirectly impacted, please call 

Victim Support (0808 168 9111), who offer a 

range of services that may help. 

In the aftermath of the attack, we immediately 

ensured Hainault and the surrounding 

areas received additional, daily reassurance 

patrols, along with setting up the Hainault 

Engagement Hub at Hainault Library in 

collaboration with our partners from the 

council. This provided a fixed location the 

community could attend to speak with 

local officers. We also held discussions with 

local faith leaders, schools and at youth 

engagement events, and door-knocked in the 

area so everyone could access a police officer 

and raise any concerns they had. 

Policing does not work in isolation, and we 

are reliant on you, the public and our partners 

in almost everything we do. Community 

engagement and partnership work are the 

foundations of what neighbourhood policing 

is all about and are key in maintaining the 

Peelian principles of policing by consent. 

Although much has changed since the 

creation of the Metropolitan Police Act back 

in 1829 (often referred to as the creation 

of modern-day policing), Sir Robert Peel’s 

principles remain just as relevant today and 

form the basis of what my neighbourhood 

teams do. 

We have fantastic officers working in 

Redbridge who care deeply about improving 

your quality of life. We attend a variety of 

community events to see as many of you as 

possible and hear about your concerns and 

ideas for safety in your local area. Policing 

is only successful if we have your support 

and trust, and I am very conscious that trust 

is earned.

safety walk and talk event in Wanstead 

Park on 7 July, departing from the tea hut
