Surprise gift for brigade
AKAROA volunteer
firefighters have received a
heartfelt surprise after a weekly
training night.
Rebecca and Ross Herring
dropped by with a painting
to recognise the firefighters
help during the massive
deluge on the peninsula last
year.
Rebecca and Ross and their
two dogs were put up at the fire
station after the hillside around
their home and property began
to shift dramatically in the
early hours of July 23.
After being assisted by the
brigade, the fire station was
quickly converted to allow
the Herrings to shelter from
the storm.
Said Rebecca: “I am no good
at baking, but I can paint.
This painting is in recognition
of the amazing Akaroa Fire
Brigade, who evacuated us and
our two dogs, when we made
an urgent call for help.
“We suffered major landslides
on our property, which
also threatened our home. We
are deeply grateful for their
amazing support and help that
night.
“Akaroa is truly blessed to
have such outstanding people
who volunteer their time,
courage and bravery to keep us
safe, especially when we need
them most.”
Moorings at
a premium
as wharf
upgrade
looms
• By Dylan Smits
BOATIES ARE being urged to
give up moorings they rent in
Akaroa Harbour if they are not
being used.
Moorings will be in short supply
when the new $19.1 million
wharf is being built, meaning
there won’t be enough for all of
those who currently rent space.
Environment Canterbury could
not say yesterday how many
moorings were currently rented.
They cost $290 a year.
It would not be
known until the
city council approved
resource
consents for the
upgrade of the
wharf how many
moorings would
be available.
Harbourmaster
Guy Harris
Guy Harris said the solution was
for people who don’t use their
mooring to relinquish them
during the rebuild which starts
late next year. It is scheduled to be
completed in 2027.
Boat owner and Akaroa Yacht
Club member Johnny Bell said he
understood ECan’s move.
Much-needed refresh, repair
work coming for Esplanade
WORK IS about to start on a
refresh of Sumner’s Esplanade
walkway.
From July 8, the city council is
restoring the rock seawall between
the walkway and the beach, and
updating the walkway seating on
the seaward side of the concrete
seawall.
The city council is also investigating
the installation of an
accessible ramp running from the
walkway to the beach.
City council acting head of
parks Rupert Bool said the
changes will be made as a result of
a 2019 assessment of the seawall.
“We found about half of the
seawall – some 600 metres – had
eroded and needs to be topped
up with more rocks to get it back
to its original height, which will
mean better protection from
swells and storms,’’ Bool said.
“All the bench seats are in an
average to poor condition and
need to either be repaired or
replaced.
“We’re replacing them with new
ones that will be in the same style
as the furniture you can see along
the newly completed Te Ara Ihutai
Christchurch Coastal Pathway.
“The 20 new bench seats will
be evenly spaced in the locations
people use most often,” Bool said.
“We’re installing four of them
in new spots that will give people
different views of the coastline
– on the seaward side of the
walkway and on top of the rock
seawall.
“We’re very mindful of wildlife
along this area. There’s currently
no sign of activity from lizards
and penguins, but we’ll be
keeping a lookout for them during
construction. We’ve timed the
work to start outside the penguin
breeding season,” Bool said.
The city council expects the
seawall restoration to take eight
weeks to complete, and will work
closely with the contractor to keep
disruption along the Esplanade
walkway to a minimum. The
furniture is set to be renewed in
mid September.
The Life of Dai by Dai Henwood
A deeply moving and profoundly uplifting story about living with joy, even in
the face of adversity.
‘Part memoir and part masterclass in finding hope and
joy in the face of unthinkable challenges. This isn’t a book
about cancer, it’s a book about living’ – Jaquie Brown
Dai Henwood wanted to be a comedian even before he
knew what a comedian was. He always knew there was
something special in being able to make people laugh.
Over a 25-year career, the much-loved Kiwi entertainer
and TV host has won every major comedy award in New
Zealand. But in January 2023, Dai shared publicly that
three years earlier he had been diagnosed with stage 4
bowel cancer. Perhaps the ultimate teacher for what really
matters, Dai’s incurable cancer has shown him a new way
of living that embraces small moments of perfection and
cherishes things we often overlook. As well as showing us
how laughter can be a wonderful medicine – and there are
many laughs in his book – Dai teaches us that often the gifts
we’ve been searching for are right in front of us, if only we
could see them.
Surf Like A Woman by Pauline Menczer
Becoming World Champ when women weren’t welcome on the waves
In the 80s and 90s, surf culture was toxic,
especially towards women. But Pauline Menczer
- a dirt-poor, chronically ill, freckle-faced teen
from Bondi - defied insults and intimidation to
ride the waves. The reason: she simply loved
to surf. But when Pauline’s determination
propelled her onto the pro circuit, her battle
for acceptance and equality didn’t end there.
The endemic sexism of the industry meant
prize money for women was a pittance, while
sponsors ignored her because she was gay
and didn’t have the beach babe look. Despite
these challenges, Pauline became the 1993
World Champion and played a key role in
bringing greater equality to the sport. This
is the inspirational story of a true underdog
battler, whose fearlessness and grit broke down
the door of surfing’s boys’ club for the next
generation of women.
A FAMILY home on a sizeable
marketed the
property with
One Roof renovated
homes on large
sections rarely
came on the market in Sumner.
The three-bedroom, twobathroom
home attracted more
than 60 groups throughout the
week campaign. Thursday’s
auction drew three buyers, with
bidding opening at $2m and the
property selling for $2.25m.
Everyone looking at the home
was local, Still said. Two of the
bidders knew each other, while
the new owners lived close by,
with their children attending the
school across the road.
Still told One Roof the current
owners were moving to a smaller
house nearby. The owners before
them had also lived there for
KEEP IT LOCAL: A Sumner family is moving around the
corner to their new home on Hardwicke St.
about 20 years.
She said Sumner was more
expensive than other suburbs
in the city, with properties on
the Esplanade typically fetching
higher prices.
“Once you get here – you
move up or you downsize – but
mostly people stay. It’s got
so much to offer,” she told
OneRoof.
“Number one, it’s got the
beach. Number two, everyone
can walk everywhere unless they
are up the hill of course, and it’s
a great community.”
“Because of this new wharf,
people are going to lose their
mooring. They’ve got to put those
boats somewhere else. So yeah, I
can understand why they want to
do this,” Bell said.
People need permission from
ECan if they leave their mooring
vacant for more than six months.
An ECan spokesperson said it
was now communicating with all
mooring renters about what the
future holds.
The spokesperson said ECan
would not take back the unused
moorings at this stage.
“At this stage, we would prefer
to work with the mooring owners
to find an appropriate solution.”
Harris said vacant moorings
can be a hazard for nearby
boats.
he said.
Vicar’s shift into filmmaking
nets two award nominations
• By Dylan Smits
COULD WELL known
community figure John McLister
be the next Peter Jackson or
Taika Waititi?
“No, I don’t think so,” he
laughed. “I’m more interested
in capturing the social history
of people. That’s quite a niche
audience.”
However, the 66-year-old vicar’s
new career is off to a roaring
start with nominations for two
film awards.
McLister is a Christchurch
finalist in the Vista Foundation
48 Hours short film competition
and a nominee for best tertiary
film in the Doc Edge Film Festival.
Both awards will be presented
at ceremonies tomorrow night.
“For me, as a first-time person
having a crack at it, it’s nice to
see two films as finalists. It’s
quite rewarding to get that level
of approval,” he said.
McLister’s short film for the 48
Hour competition, The Reserve,
is about a mother and son who
get separated while walking in
the woods.
Following competition rules,
the 5min film was produced over
two days in May and has horror
and psychological themes.
It was produced by McLister,
with Jae Hulbert directing and
Clint Thambi on cinematography.
McLister is deeply involved in
the Lyttelton community as the
vicar at Holy Trinity Anglican
Church and the chaplain at the
seafarers’ centre.
“Everyone’s been pretty supportive
(of my film-making). I
think when people see you’re really
enjoying something, they’ll
tell you to go for it.”
A year ago, McLister decided
to pursue a lifelong curiosity and
enrolled in Yoobee’s film school,
New Zealand’s largest.
“I thought to myself, if I don’t
have a crack at this now, I’ll
regret it.”
At high school McLister
enjoyed filming, with one of the
country’s first video cameras
sparking his interest in making
stories.
“Life carries you in different
directions, but it never went
away,” he said.
He submitted his student
documentary Heritage Heroes to
Doc Edge, which is running in
Christchurch until Sunday and
online until July 31.
For the film, McLister took a
tour of Ferrymead Heritage Park
and interviewed a tram driver,
and print shop volunteers about
their work.
“I was just blown away by
their dedication. They’re kind of
unsung heroes.”
He enjoyed his time at Yoobee
and felt welcomed by his much
younger classmates.
“It was funny at times because
I was old enough to be the
grandfather of some of these
students. It was good for me,
because it put me in touch with
people who I wouldn’t naturally
interact with at my age.”
Despite the age gap, McLister
said he managed to find common
ground with students due
to their joint creative pursuits.
He linked up with Hulbert and
Thambi through the course.
The trio want to start a
production company and
film many short movies and
documentaries around Lyttelton
Harbour.
“It’s a beautiful area for making
stories, and where Jae and
I both grew up, so we want to
show it off.”
Documentary filmmaking is
his favourite genre.
“A lot of documentaries are big
stories about people who do big
things. They’re great stories that
have to be told, but what about
the average person? Someone
who works a nine to five but then
spends 10 hours a week volunteering,”
he said.
McLister’s wife Yaeko and
children Joe and Caeli have been
supportive of his filmmaking too.
“My wife has known I’ve
wanted to do it for a long time.
So she’s been very patient and allowed
me to go off and do these
things.”
Creating The Reserve was a
challenge for the crew as they
had just 48 hours to write, film
and edit the movie.
Teams only received their
genre at the start of the event,
so the crew scouted out multiple
locations in advance.
“We went to a lot of place
to scope out where we could
possibly film. We could have got
a musical, we could have a got a
mystery, we had to be flexible.”
The Urumau Reserve in Lyttelton
was perfect for a moody
horror short.
“We wanted to highlight the
area a little because it has a sort
of uniqueness and ambience.”
McLister’s team received the
‘real-time’ genre which meant
the movie couldn’t have any time
skips. Edits were still allowed.
As producer, McLister took on
a managing role for every aspect
of production.
“It was a good team effort. We
all did our part to make it work
while filming it in just one day.”
Thambi is also a finalist for the
48 Hour cinematography award.
Later this year, McLister will
start work on a documentary
about Lyttelton Times journalist
Samuel Crombie Brown and
his reporting during the 1881
invasion of Parihaka.
Mother-son duo team up in short horror film
A Diamond Harbour mother and
son star in The Reserve.
Annabelle and Josh Wear
needed to learn their parts
and put on a convincing
performance in just one day of
filming.
Fourteen-year-old Josh is a
Cashmere High School student
who dreams of becoming a professional
actor.
“He’s wanted to be an actor
forever. Josh wandered up to me
one day and said ‘alright Mum,
when are you going to get me
an agent’,” said Annabelle.
With limited opportunities
available in the South Island,
Josh starting acting in Yoobee
student films.
The pair were only shown the
script for The Reserve on shoot
day.
“As an actor it was exciting,
because you basically have to
embody a character in one day,”
Annabelle said.
“It was a good 20-minute
walk up the hill with everybody
lugging make-up, gear and
fabric. It’s just an amazing
pressure cooker.”
Josh’s passion for acting
sparked his mother’s interest in
appearing on screen.
“I originally went along to the
first audition for Josh and I read
with him. The director was like
‘oh I want you in the film as well’.
I think I’m a secret actor because
I love it. I absolutely love it.”
Happy with supporting roles,
Annabelle wants to help her son
shine by acting alongside him.
“I’m cool with being the
sidekick. It’s about helping Josh
to get these opportunities.”
Josh will appear in the Court
Theatre’s junior production of
The Little Mermaid next month
as Chef Louis.

TRANSFORMATION: The Ferrymead Regional Park area will be turned
into coastal wetland in a boon for native plants and animals. Approved in
December, the plan will see tidal connections restored allowing the land
to the return to its natural state.
Ferrymead Park
to be restored to
coastal wetland
• By Dylan Smits
ENVIRONMENTAL development
at Ferrymead Regional Park and the
surrounding pasture will start soon.
The $1.4 million plan will see natural
tidal zones reconnected and more native
species planted to restore the area to coastal
wetland.
“The development plan reflects
the council’s emphasis on climate
resilience and responding to the
ecological emergency,” said city
council acting head of parks Rupert
Bool.
The development area sits between
Tunnel Rd and Bridle Path Rd,
with the golf club and heritage park
located within.
Stage one of the development
will likely be under way early next
month at the latest, said Bool.
The pines along the Ōpāwaho
River Track will be cut down over
about six weeks to prepare the
estuary edge for the planting of
about 12,000 native species.
It will take about four weeks to
complete the plantings.
The lower Avoca Stream and connected
saltmarsh will then be planted with more
natives with a start date not yet set.
Heathcote city councillor Sara Templeton
said the development is the result of nearby
residents pushing for natural restoration.
“Making sure we have native species
thriving near the estuary is really
Rupert
Bool
Sara
Templeton
important,” she said.
Stage two will see tidal connections
with the estuary restored at five waterways
which flow from the Avoca Stream near
Tunnel Rd.
This will encourage natural regeneration
of the pasture land west of the golf club
alongside planting wetland natives.
Work on stage two will start
some time next year, with the
whole plan expected to be fully
implemented by 2030.
These projects will see most of
the land north and west of the golf
club restored to coastal wetland.
Bool said the city council has
worked out a transition plan with
the farmer who uses paddocks
within the area for grazing
livestock.
“We will be gradually removing
grazing from the paddocks that
can be seen from the Tunnel Rd
motorway within Ferrymead
Regional Park,” Bool said.
“Planting and retiring areas of
the paddocks will occur gradually
and it is likely that there will be
some areas that are grazed until the
site is fully developed as habitat.”
Bool said the phasing out of paddocks
over time will allow the farmer to make
long-term plans for new grazing areas.
The Waihoro Spreydon-Cashmere-
Heathcote Community Board approved
the development plan in December last
year.

Custom bat maker decides
to pull stumps on business
• By Dylan Smits
WHEN CRICKET star Peter
Fulton scored a triple century for
Canterbury in 2003, he used a
Governor bat.
Now, it’s the end of the innings
for the bat’s maker and Governor
founder, Graham Sercombe, as he
retires after 32 years of producing
custom cricket bats.
Fulton’s score of 301 not out,
from 445 balls, against Auckland
was the sixth triple century by a
New Zealander and the first in 50
years at the time.
“It’s cool to see on TV and
that, but I don’t know how much
attention you really get from it,”
Sercombe said.
He crafts bats and other
cricket gear out of his Governors
Bay workshop aiming for a
personalised, quality product
rather than quantity.
The 62-year-old is an aircraft
engineer at Air New Zealand
and has also worked in coaching
and administration at various
Christchurch sports clubs.
Now looking to purchase a
home in the city and a caravan in
the North Island, he is closing up
shop.
“It felt like the right time and
I’m keeping the netting side
of the business so I’ll still have
connections with people in that
sense.”
Governor bats are made from
high-grade English willow
sourced from J.S. Wright and
Sons, the oldest bat willow
supplier in the world.
“It’s always been a part-time
hobby-business. It’s hard for
me to make a lower level bat
because then you have to produce
numbers. So I’ve mainly hit the
custom-made side of the market.”
He is selling his equipment to
Gavin Cox Furniture which will
start crafting the bats.
Sercombe has made about 300
bats since starting Governor,
selling mostly in New Zealand but
with some going to American and
European customers.
CRAFTY: Graham Sercombe has been making cricket bats
out of his Governors Bay workshop for the past 32 years,
including the bat used by Peter Fulton, right, when scoring
a triple century for Canterbury. Now he is retiring his brand
and looking to travel.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
“It’s just people who love cricket
and love having something a bit
special about their bat.”
Sercombe has enjoyed showing
his bat-making process to
customers and several school
groups over the years.
“That’s always been good. Some
people have even just come and
had look without any intentions
of buying, but I knew they were
interested in the process.”
To craft a Governor bat,
Sercombe presses the willow so it
bounces balls rather than denting
the bat.
“The pressing process is one of
the biggest things about getting
really great quality out of a bat.”
Sercombe’s two sporting
passions are cricket and
badminton.
In his early 20s, he played
for Old Boys Collegians and
for a season in England in the
Middlesex County League.
His favourite part of the process
is when he seals the sticker on a
finished product.
“You can see what you’ve done
when it’s finished and it looks
great. It’s very satisfying.”
He hopes any cricketer who has
used a Governor will celebrate
a legacy of a high-quality,
personalised bats.
PHOTOGENIC: The SPCA
• By Shelley Topp
THE SPCA is calling on dog and
cat lovers to enter their animals
in the organisation’s Pets of the
Year 2025 calendar competition
fundraiser.
This year New Zealand’s
largest animal charity has
two calendar categories, cat and
dog, says the SPCA’s chief executive
Todd Westwood.
‘‘This is a chance to put
your pet photography skills to use,
and capture your furry friend’s
fabulous side. Or maybe you have
a gem already on your camera,’’ he
says.
‘‘While the top 12 fundraisers
will be our monthly stars,
any pet profile which raises more
than $150 will be guaranteed a spot
inside the calendar.’’
Every dollar raised as part of
the Pets of the Year competition
goes directly into funding the
SPCA’s work.
‘‘As your pet’s photo generates
donations, sick, injured and
vulnerable animals around New
Zealand will get the help they need
because of it,’’ Todd says.
• To enter go to
petsoftheyear.spca.
nz. Choose a favourite photo
of your cat or dog and create
a profile that captures their
essence, then share their
profile with family, friends
and colleagues to help you
fundraise. Entries close on
Sunday, July 28, at 10pm.

OUR PEOPLE
LPC Joanne
Farmer’s
pioneering
pilot career
Joanne Farmer, a prominent
face at the Lyttelton Port
Company for over two
decades, has recently retired
from the bridge piloting
vessels in and out of the
harbour.
She was the first woman in New Zealand
to obtain her Master Foreign-Going (MFG)
Certificate, command a vessel and become
a harbour pilot.
Her journey at sea was always in
her blood. Her grandparents were in the
shipping industry, and her father worked
as a fisheries inspector.
Along with former LPC Pilots John Clarke
and Finlay Laird, Joanne belonged to the
Lyttelton Sea Venturers. They all applied
to the Union Steam Ship Company for
apprenticeships, were all accepted and
all piloted in Lyttelton.
Joanne went through the Union Steam
Ship Company fleet and earned her second
mate’s certificate. She then got a job as
a third mate on the Aotea (P&O NZ) and
worked with Roselyne Yeandle, another
New Zealand female marine pioneer.
In 1990, Joanne gained her master’s
certificate, and after leaving Hong Kong,
she joined Jardine Ship Management.
She spent 10 years with Jardine sailing
around the Mediterranean, up the Amazon
and around ports in Brazil, Japan, British
Columbia, the United Kingdom and the
United States.
Joanne says her greatest achievement
as a pilot was her first solo pilotage – the
Dong Wong 529 into Z berth in a howling
southerly.
“There were no tugs, 8 metres clear ahead
and 8 metres clear astern. She went in
perfectly, never to be repeated,” says Joanne.
She also recalls when she met her brother
at the pilot ladder, was escorted to the
bridge and dutifully handed a piping hot
cup of tea.
“Lyttelton has always been home, and
when I got a call that Lyttelton Port Company
was hiring, well, the rest was history.”
Joanne retired from piloting this year
and now works as a marine project specialist.
She says she would highly recommend
a career as a pilot to anyone.
“Piloting is extremely rewarding, and
every day is a school day,” she laughs.
Joanne Farmer spent
over two decades on the
bridge piloting vessels in
and out of the harbour.

LPC leads
New
Zealand for
biodiversity
LPC staff cleared
LPC Gollans Bay
Covenant Site above
the quarry.
LPC is the first New Zealand
company to sign up as an early
adopter of publicly reporting
nature-related issues.
How does LPC intend to respond to naturerelated
financial risks and dependencies?
Like climate-related disclosures, companies
are encouraged to understand their financial,
social and environmental risks to nature loss
and how they plan to respond.
LPC follows the frameworks Taskforce
on Nature-related Financial Disclosures
(TNFD) and the Science-based Targets for
Nature (SBTN).
What is LPC doing?
LPC is the only New Zealand company to
commit to disclosing our nature-related risks
and dependencies this financial year. LPC is
working with other organisations to assess
impacts, develop targets and take action.
According to the World Economic Forum,
global biodiversity decline is one of the top
10 risks to our future. The global economy
depends on nature, yet habitats and
biodiversity are in poor health.
New Zealand is one of the 200
governments worldwide to commit
to urgent action for nature.
Our Environment and Sustainability team
has been working through the steps needed
to understand LPC’s impacts on nature and
how LPC depends on nature. Soon, we will
be working with others at LPC to identify
our most significant risks and opportunities
relating to nature and where we will
prioritise to take action.
How dependent is LPC on nature?
We rely on raw materials for our projects
such as cement, timber, asphalt and rock to
fuel our machinery. Our business depends
on nature’s health to support the trades
that use fisheries, agriculture, timber, dairy,
recreational vessels, etc.
We rely on the quality and quantity
of freshwater to operate and the harbour’s
ability to dilute and buffer the run-off
we discharge. Nature’s storms and tides
determine the state of the channel and the
need for dredging.
How much impact do LPC’s activities
have on the surrounding environment?
Dredging, reclaiming the seabed and
shoreline, discharging pollutants into the
air, land and water and utilising land for
our activities all impact nature. We have
mapped the extent of our activities and
the habitats they overlap with.
Compared to the time before the
Port existed in Whakaraupō in 1860, we
are calculating how our activities have
changed the environment and impacted
biodiversity.
Local
companies
turn bark
waste into
garden
products
Local companies have found
an innovative way to turn
bark waste collected at the
Lyttelton Port log yard into
useful garden products such
as potting mix, soil conditioner
and garden chips.
The bark is mixed with recyclable sawmill
waste and forest operations residue in the
raw material mix.
This initiative is the result of a
collaboration between Port operators,
forest companies and Intelligro, a leading
manufacturer of landscaping products.
Forestry management and consulting
and harvest management company Laurie
Forestry says that Intelligro and several
other companies have been using the clean
bark for a long time. The challenge is finding
a way to use lower-quality material.
The system has been refined into a vast
operation using raw materials from as far
away as Picton.
The bark is screened and mixed with
other materials, including clean bark from
sawmills, and used to create highly soughtafter
nursery blends.
At the Lyttelton Port, bark falls off
trucks as they are unloaded and swept
into a storage area.
Intelligro then collects the accumulated
bark and uses it as a byproduct in compost
production.
Waste Management’s sweeping
programme sweeps up dust, collects
the bark and adds it to the pile.
Also, after each shipment, residue bark
is swept into storage for Intelligro to collect
and load between log loading operations.
“The bark has gone from being a problem
residue to a sought-after commodity
and helps to cover some of the costs of
maintaining the yards,” says a representative
from the company.
“This is a fine example of what can happen
when you get a team of people working
together so that all parties benefit from
the relationship.”
night and day.
LPC recently removed Jetties 4 and 5 as
part of our ongoing Port redevelopment
project. These jetties were old and no longer
fit for purpose.
Their removal created a shallow-water
area that could pose a hazard to Port users.
For safety, LPC has set up a demarcation
zone with lights and markers to indicate
the shallow-water area.
A line of eight steel piles with lights
marks the eastern boundary, while five
yellow buoys with lights mark the southern
boundary. The western boundary is the
existing Jetty 6.
Lyttelton Port Company reminds all Port
users to stay clear of the demarcation zone
and avoid entering the shallow-water area.
Coal yard
shines with
intelligent
LED lights
Have you noticed how bright
the coal yard is these days?
Lyttelton Port Company has
installed new lights on 10
poles covering the 9-hectare
coal site.
These are not just ordinary lights but smart
lights that can be controlled using an iPad
in the Coal Supervisor’s office.
“We can change the lighting set-up with
just one tap on the control pad,” says Project
Manager David Jones.
“We can also switch on and off or dim
individual lights to suit the working
conditions in the yard.”
David says the new system allows them
to pre-set lighting configurations for
different lighting situations.
“The new LED lights are much better than
the old sodium lights. They make the coal
yard brighter and reduce the glare for the
drivers,” says David.
The poles vary in height from 12 to 30
metres, and the number of lights on each
pole depends on the lighting needs for the
coal yard and the road.
The poles also have to support a
weight of more than 40 kilograms of
lighting equipment.
The poles have two types of lights:
smaller ones for the road and larger
ones for the coal yard.
So next time you see the coal yard
glowing, you’ll know it’s thanks to the
new intelligent LPC lights.
600 fanworms
discovered at
Te Ana Marina
Diver holds fanworms
found in the harbour
that likely originated
from a vessel travelling
from overseas.
A large, tube-dwelling worm
lurks beneath the surface
of the water in Lyttelton
Harbour, attaching itself
to vessels and structures.
This Mediterranean fanworm (Sabella)
was detected in Lyttelton Harbour in 2008,
the first time it was found in New Zealand.
It likely originated from a vessel travelling
from overseas. The fanworms grow in dense
clumps and, with their fan-like appendages,
block light and food to native species,
starving them.
Over the years, Biosecurity NZ, the
Canterbury Regional Council (Environment
Canterbury) and Lyttelton Port Company
have undertaken efforts to reduce the
fanworm population within the inner
harbour and stop the spread into the wider
Lyttelton Harbour and beyond.
In 2021, LPC and contract divers removed
900 fanworms from the jetties and
pontoons in the inner harbour. Six-monthly
surveillance since this time has shown that
the population is increasing again.
Jetties 4, 5 and 6 were removed to stop a
potential source population of fanworms.
To date, 210 fanworms have been removed
with the jetty piles. A recent dive survey
of Lyttelton Harbour, jointly funded by
Environment Canterbury and Biosecurity
NZ, has shown that fanworms have not
spread outside the inner harbour, which is
encouraging.
Recreational vessels are the most significant
source of spread. Environment Canterbury
funded fanworm removal at Te Ana Marina.
Over two days, divers hand-picked 600
invasive fanworms from the pontoons, piles
and vessels at the marina, one measuring
70 centimetres long.
LPC is working on a Te Ana Marina
Biosecurity Plan, and the marina team are
doing a great job screening new vessels that
wish to visit. Vessels must prove they have
a clean hull before entering the marina and
maintain this during their stay.
Te Hapū Ngāti Wheke strongly advocates
for a clean hull policy for Lyttelton Harbour.
By collaborating with other organisations,
we hope to reduce the risk of fanworm
within Lyttelton and stop its spread to
other locations.
Dry Dock
safety
upgrade
Since the dock was opened
in January 1883, workers
and crew have been able
to walk on the stone steps
and concrete altars without
handrails or barriers to protect
them from a fall.
However, as the oldest of two working
dry docks in New Zealand, the Lyttelton Dry
Dock has a category 1 heritage status. This
means approvals are required from Heritage
NZ Pouhere Taonga and Christchurch City
Council before works can be undertaken,
which could potentially damage or alter
the stone and concrete structure that was
originally installed in the 1880s.
Alongside in-depth discussions with those
who use the dock daily, the project team
looked to engineering and heritage specialists
to design approaches that would meet the
needs of the workforce, be structurally sound,
and limit the impact on the historic fabric.
The innovative solution has been to install
over 200 ground anchors, which, across the
four top altars, will support over 1km of
horizontal lines that workers can clip onto.
New stairs at the head and gate ends of
the dock also utilise the ground anchors for
structural support. The frames, treads, and
landings slot into specially designed brackets
fixed to the ground anchor, holding the bulk
of the weight. All other fixtures and fittings
rest lightly on the dock structure, meaning
that if they are removed in the future, all
that remains is the ground anchors.
The new stairs have been designed
specifically to meet the bespoke requirements
of the dry dock and can be adjusted
depending on whether the dock is dry and
vessels are under repair or when the dock is
flooded and vessels are entering/exiting over
the sill. These innovations include handrails
that can be removed or folded out, stair
flights that can be lowered or raised, and
whole sections that can be removed.
Artist impression of
stairs in the Dry Dock
From August, dry dock customers, ship’s crew,
and workers who use the dry dock as a place
of work will be able to access the dock floor
and walk around the altars using new safety
systems designed to prevent the risk
of falling from heights.
Not since the electrification of the dry
dock in 1926 has this historic place seen such
a major shift in the way that work will be
carried out. Continuing to invest in safer
systems to protect workers from a fall from
height, this year LPC are installing new stairs
and fall protection lines.
TREASURES FROM THE PAST
The grand old lady of Lyttelton Port
• By Carl Bonniface
THE FIRST meeting of the newlyformed
Lyttelton Harbour Board
was held on January 18, 1877,
with one of the first things on the
agenda being plans to order a new
tug boat.
Up until then, Lyttelton Port
was at the mercy of the Cameron
Brothers, who owned the only
tug, Titan. After discussing it
thoroughly, the board ordered
a new tug at the cost of £9,000
(about NZ$2.7 million today)
from the Laird Brothers, pioneers
in the construction of iron-hulled
ships. They were located at
Birkenhead, opposite Liverpool,
on the bank of the River Mersey.
The new tug PS Lyttelton was
an iron paddle-wheel steamer
powered by twin diagonal
compound steam engines. She left
Birkenhead on August 19, 1878.
She was rigged as a brigantine
in London before being sailed
out to New Zealand via the Suez
Canal, arriving at her home port
Lyttelton on November 21, 1878.
On her arrival, the sails and
mizzen mast were removed and
the paddle wheels fitted. She was
also fitted with a steam-powered
fire extinguishing pump, which
could throw a stream of water up
to 65 metres. This was handy to
extinguish ship fires and also to
help the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire
Brigade deal with large warehouse
fires in the port town.
The first master of the tug was
Captain JW Clark, originally from
Tasmania, who had previously
commanded several ships on the
trans-Tasman trade route.
Clark remained master until
1886 when he was appointed Port
Lyttelton’s harbourmaster.
Under Clark’s leadership PS
Lyttelton performed two notable
salvaging feats.
In 1882, after a storm at
Timaru when several vessels were
wrecked, PS Lyttelton travelled
south and towed off the barque
City of Perth, taking her to
Dunedin. The barque had lost
her rudder so the tow was very
difficult.
A short time later, PS Lyttelton
towed the barque Hobson off
Ninety Mile Beach in Northland
and brought her to Lyttelton. The
old tug certainly got around!
At the official opening of the
Lyttelton Dry Dock on January
3, 1883, PS Lyttelton was used to
convey the ladies, dressed in all
their finery, from the ‘Town Jetty’,
across the harbour to the dry
dock. The tug was dressed “in an
exceedingly tasteful manner” with
bunches of toetoe and bouquets of
geraniums.
After the ceremony, around
700 gentlemen gathered in the
new export shed to celebrate
The original brass binnacle from paddle steam tug Lyttelton
inscribed brass plaque. PHOTOS: CARL BONNIFACE
the momentous occasion. The
party cost the Harbour Board
£533, (more than $160,000 today)
including £240 ($73,000) for wine.
The speeches went on into the
night.
Included here is a photograph
of the Terra Nova, best known as
Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s ship
on his fateful second attempt to
reach the South Pole in 1910, but
here she is accompanied by PS
Lyttelton in Lyttelton Harbour in
1904.
How did this come about? Well,
during Scott’s first Antarctic
expedition of 1901-1904, his ship
Discovery became trapped in pack
ice in McMurdo Sound. Terra
Nova, accompanied by the SY
Morning, was sent to the frozen
continent to free Discovery and
was photographed in Lyttelton
with PS Lyttelton on her way
home.
Captain Scott was so impressed
with Terra Nova, he used her for
his second expedition.
Around this time, PS Lyttelton
was starting to show her age, even
though she was re-boilered in
1901.
As merchant vessels arriving in
Lyttelton were getting larger, the
Harbour Board decided to replace
her with a more powerful and
manoeuvrable tug.
A new vessel was ordered
from Ferguson Brothers of Port
Glasgow in Scotland.
The Canterbury arrived in
Lyttelton on September 10, 1907.
PS Lyttelton went out to meet her
and escorted her into the inner
harbour. The new tug had a name
change in 1911 to Lyttelton, and is
the much-loved vessel still visible,
moored in the harbour today.
The old paddle steam tug’s
service ended with the arrival of
the new vessel, and she was sold
to the Devonport Steam Ferry
Company for £3500 ($1m) and
headed to Auckland.
In 1912 she was again sold,
this time to the Kauri Timber
Company to tow rafts of kauri
logs between Whangaroa and the
Coromandel ports.
In 1945 her superstructure was
destroyed by fire. On October 5,
1955, she was towed across the
Hauraki Gulf and run ashore at
Lagoon Bay on Coromandel’s
Takatu Peninsula, for use as a
shingle hopper for the Subritzky
Shipping Company.
After the shingle trade ceased
in the mid-1970s (nearly 100 years
after her launch in August 1878)
her hull became slowly buried in
shingle drifts. A sad ending for a
grand old lady of the sea that was
part of the colourful history of
Lyttelton.
Recently, the original brass
binnacle from the compass on the
PS Lyttelton was gifted to the Tug
Lyttelton Preservation Society by
the Naval Point Club Lyttelton.
It will take pride of place in their
museum.
Te Aratai College:
Celebrating Who Our Learners Are
A “culturally responsive pedagogy” is a term
that many outside of the education sector
may have heard from time to time but have
little grasp of what we are speaking to. What
this means for us at Te Aratai College is an
endeavour to deliver accessible teaching and
learning that values an individual’s culture. It is
a genuine attempt of our kaiako to recognise,
celebrate and utilise ākonga for their unique
and meaningful identities and backgrounds.
We recognise as educators our tried and true
purpose is to teach, but a culturally responsive
pedagogy also aspires to ensure all our
students feel their cultural identity is strong,
secure and fundamentally valued along the
way.
It can be seen and heard in the karakia recited
at the beginning of Tāhuhu classes. It can be
found in the cultural narrative of our building
names, gifted to us by Ngāi Tūāhuriri for our
recent rebuild.
Our commitment to cultural responsiveness is
also addressed in our practice of ako and mahi
ngātahi, a philosophy of not only sharing the
content, context and responsibility of teaching
and learning between student and teacher
but also in the wider community with ongoing
kōrero and consultation with whānau. Perhaps
the best example of this is our Wā Whakanui
conferencing we hold in Term 3 of every year.
These conferences replace the traditional
parent-teacher interviews where
whānau are given 10 minute intervals to
digest a student’s progress by individual
subject teachers.
Sāmoa students participating in preparing and
sharing an Umu to celebrate the culmination of
Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa - Samoa Language
Week. It is also found in Te Roopu Kapa Haka
o Kimihia, the school’s Kapa Haka group about
to depart for The National Secondary Schools
Competition. This group is a combination of 5
kura from around Christchurch, also including:
Christchurch Girls High School, Christchurch
Boys High School, Cashmere High School and
Haeata Community Campus.
Using this practice ensures we are upholding
the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and when
we succeed it benefits every learner. For all
ākonga, we must work to ensure they all feel
they belong within the learning environment
we provide and a sound, clear kaupapa is
shared with the community that is focused on
the potential of ‘all’ learners to thrive without
compromising who they are.
So what does this look, sound and feel like
in our learning community? In the classroom,
it is expressed through wānanga – decisionmaking
and learning practices that are
responsive to a range of relevant contexts. It
maintains, advances, and shares knowledge
and develops intellectual independence, while
assisting the use of knowledge regarding
āhuatanga Māori (tradition) according to
tikanga Māori (custom). This can be found in
our science classes where Y10 students learn
about genetics and cancer, and how singer
Stan Walker identified that the mutated CDH1
gene was expressed in his whakapapa.
Instead, Wā Whakanui is a presentation
delivered by our students to their whānau,
sharing and speaking to 3 pieces of their
best work. These are empowering, inspiring
presentations where the self-determination and
success of our ākonga is evident for their loved
ones.
Our commitment to strong community bonds
is also ever-present in events like our Gagana
The success from these competitions is
more than placing on the day, it includes
creating a sense of whanaungatanga,
personal success and a sense of
belonging and identity within the
kaihaka for all ākonga to be proud of
their culture and who they are.
A school is not an island where we prepare our
students for the ‘real world’ outside. A school is
part of that real world, where the experiences
and expressions are as real and lived as
anything that flows in, through and beyond it.
This is why we believe that a successful kura,
a school that delivers success for its precious
taonga, is engaged with the communities,
histories and identities of all that come to tread
life and experience into its busy halls.
Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 lively and refined
EXPECTATIONS are high on
any new model replacing a top
seller, even more so when it
happens to be the GLC SUV, a
sales star for Mercedes-Benz the
producer of some of the finest
luxury vehicles on the planet.
Is the second generation of the
popular GLC up to the challenge?
It certainly makes a strong
start, by offering features for the
New Zealand market that were
pricey options packages, part of a
more generous range of standard
equipment. The GLC is new, but
faces off against the same old
adversaries such as the BMW X3,
Audi Q5 and Lexus NX.
The only model sold here is the
GLC 300 4MATIC priced from
$113,900 and was the chosen
one for this road test. There is
only one $6900 option package.
It comprises MBUX Augmented
Reality for Navigation, GUARD
360 ° Vehicle Protection Plus,
Burmester 3D surround sound
system, Digital Light, Adaptive
Highbeam Assist Plus, and heat
and noise-insulating acoustic
glass.
The generation two GLC is
longer which helps unlock an
additional 50 litres of boot space
while there are a host of other
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
worthwhile enhancements over
the previous model.
The ones you will notice most
are new body-coloured wheel
arches, tapered running boards
and 20-inch AMG bi-colour alloy
wheels.
It keeps making every post
a winner, with a bold overhaul
of the passenger compartment
that follows the lead of its C-
Class sibling, and banishing
almost all buttons and switches.
These are replaced by a central
portrait-oriented display screen
that becomes the go-to for most
vehicle’s functions, including the
latest generation of the company’s
lauded MBUX infotainment
system.The exterior adds
improved aerodynamics creating
less wind resistance and noise
and better fuel consumption.
This model has increased
in size almost everywhere
compared to its predecessor.
It’s 60mm longer, the rear track
width is up a whopping 23mm
and the wheelbase receives a
15mm stretch to 2888mm. The
width is unchanged from the
previous model at 1890mm, but
still remains among the best in
its class.
The luggage capacity has
increased significantly to a
generous 620-litres. The rear
seat backrest can be split-folded
in a 40:20:40 ratio. Electrically
operated unlocking of the rear
seat backrest is activated by
push-button switches on the
left and right side of the rear
seat backrest, or via controls
in the load compartment. A
power tailgate is standard and
operated via the ignition key, a
switch in the driver’s door, or the
unlocking handle on the tailgate.
The GLC 300 features a 48V
electrical system and secondgeneration
Integrated Starter
Generator (ISG), providing
support off the mark and in
the low rev range. This, in
tandem with turbocharging,
ensures strong and seamless
power delivery. The electrical
system with its ‘gliding’, boost
or recuperation function yields
further fuel consumption
reductions.
The ISG can provide an
additional 17kW of power and
200Nm of torque and recuperate
higher electrical outputs than
a belt-driven starter generator.
It also sees the engine start
quickly and quietly, making the
transition from stop to start
barely discernible from the
drivers seat.
The combination of these
systems ensures smooth power
from a 190kW turbocharged
Ratings out of 10: Performance 8; Handling 7; Build Quality
9; Comfort 8; Passenger and Load Space 5; Value for
money: 7; Safety – Five Star ANCAP rating.
Overall points out of 10: 8
four-cylinder engine producing
400Nm of torque – up 30Nm on
the outgoing model. This ensures
improved strength and flexibility
through the rev range. Lively
and supremely refined, it shifts a
solid luxury SUV with verve and
purpose that is up a good notch
on the previous engine.
This latest GLC power plant is
another in a long line of recent
smaller capacity Mercedes
motors that emphatically prove
you can do more, in fact a
lot more, with less. The main
takeaways from this engine
for me were its smoothness
and linear power delivery
that collectively provides a
memorable driving experience.
A sophisticated and highly
organised 9-speed automatic
effortlessly reels off gear changes
with accuracy and precision.
There is an abundance of
usable passenger and load space
that eclipses the old model. It
bristles with high-quality cabin
materials such as Artico seats,
upper dash and door linings;
wood grain dashboard trim; and
piano black finish for the centre
console. Wireless smartphone
integration and charging are
standard.
This is the best equipped GLC
yet with features including a
panoramic sunroof and headup
display, front seat electric
adjustment, memory settings and
heated seats.
There is also a new addition to
the Mercedes-Benz SUV range.
Targeted towards journeys over
rougher terrain, the “transparent
bonnet” shows an image on the
central display screen of any
lurking ground obstructions
directly in front of, or below
the front of the vehicle, as well
as the angle of the front wheels.
This clever tech finds a safe path
through challenging terrain
fraught with hazards.
With the press of a button,
Dynamic Select lets you adjust
the suspension to suit a variety
of driving scenarios. Adaptive
damping with its comfort and
sport modes allows you to add
some interesting variations.
Ride quality is impressive with
the test vehicle easily absorbing,
without fuss, a variety of road
surfaces I lobbed its way, to
try and generate a bit of angry
suspension noise or bump thud,
but came up empty handed.
The handling is agile and well
balanced with good grip and
traction, with much of this down
to how the suspension and 4WD
system work as one. This isn’t a
serious off-roader and doesn’t
claim to be. However, it’s well
suited for tackling skifield access
roads, or traversing well-formed
tracks.
