Life can be stressful so if you want a destress or have a physical
Jam making
with a little help from
Mallett’s Home Hardware.
If you’ve been blessed with an
abundance of juicy strawberries in
the garden this summer, too many to
enjoy with fresh cream and a sprinkling
of sugar, consider making jam with the
rest.
As with most forms of the culinary arts, there
are a few items of equipment that will make
light of the task in hand and secure your chances
of success. Pop in to see us at Mallett’s Home
Hardware where you’ll find our in-store
display of pans, jars, utensils and accessories
that are invaluable not only for making jam
but marmalades and chutneys too.
A preserving pan will always be better than a
saucepan. Manufactured from stainless
steel with a wide flat bottom for even heat
Truro City Rangers
As we move from spring into summer,
as we enjoy the heat of summer, wildlife
around us has been blooming (provided
we still have some rain). An interesting
species to look out for basking on rocks
or hiding in the grass is the slow worm
(Anguis fragilis).
When you first look at
a slow worm, you’re likely
to think it is a snake and
when you hear its name
you are likely to think it’s
a type of worm. It is in
fact neither. The slow
worm is a legless lizard,
the difference being it
can shed its tail
(something we saw
happen on Coosebean
Cycle Track this year after
a magpie attack) and that
it blinks with its eyelids.
distribution, which is a key element in successful
jam making.
Temperature is everything. You need to cook
jam quickly and evenly – hence the preserving
pan, but you also need to know when it reaches
its optimum setting point. So invest in a jam
thermometer to cut out the guesswork.
Airtight jars are vital for storing your jam and
can easily be decorated with our range of labels
and jam pot covers to create that home-made
feel which is perfect when giving as a gift.
Jam is essentially three ingredients – fruit, sugar
and water. The rest is down to alchemy and the
proliferation of recipes you can find in all good
cookbooks.
Slow worms are much smaller than snakes and
have a golden-grey colour, males are lighter in
colour while females are larger, darker on their
sides and have a dark stripe running down the
back.
Mating season occurs in May, where males
become aggressive towards each other and
during courtship the males will bite the head
or neck of the female as they intertwine their
bodies. This courtship can last for up to 10 hours!
Eggs are incubated inside the female with an
average of 8 young appearing during summer.
Slow worms are protected under the Wildlife and
Countryside Act 1981, this means it is an offence
to kill, injure, or sell them, so if you spot them
while cutting your grass its best to slip on a pair
of gloves and carefully move them to safety!
GARDENING
Truro Garden
Share seeks
volunteers
In a previous edition of Truro Together
we shared a survey seeking people’s
views on setting up a garden share
project in Truro. The project is now up
and running and is seeking volunteer
gardeners and garden owners.
The project matches garden owners who
cannot manage all or some of their garden
with people wanting land to grow food. A
coordinator helps the partners to decide a
few basic arrangements, such as how often
the gardener will tend the garden each week,
whose tools will be used, and how water is
accessed.
Lesley was the first garden owner to join the
project. The vegetable plot at the back of her
house had become overgrown, and she wasn’t
able to manage it on her own. Lesley’s garden
was used as a pilot with the project founder,
Nigel, being the gardener. The ground was
prepared over winter, with a cover of mulch
ensuring that the overgrown vegetation
rotted back into the soil. The first crops
included broad beans and chard, and in
May seedlings were planted out including
beetroot, kale, spinach, and courgettes.
The potential benefits are multiple, including
help with managing gardens, gains in mental,
physical, and social well-being and increased
provision of fresh produce. The intention is for
the produce to be shared between the garden
owners and volunteers, and where agreed to
local food banks and larders. The approach to
gardening is organic and wildlife friendly with
gains in biodiversity and soil health.
If you are interested as a volunteer gardener or
garden owner or know someone who might be
please get in touch. Volunteer gardeners are
welcome even if they don’t have much
gardening experience but are keen to learn.
Contact Truro Garden Share:
trurogardenshare@gmail.com or contact
Nigel Unwin on 07834 609 958 or
Sarah Wetherill on 07891 524 293.
The hope is that the project will develop into
a community run ‘patchwork garden farm’.
The Alverton Hotel
The Alverton Hotel are throwing a
ruby-themed ball to celebrate their
40-year anniversary as a Cornish hotel.
The Ruby Ball on the 7th September marks the
four-decade milestone of the convent turned
Cornish operated hotel in Truro.
This year, the team at The Alverton Hotel in
Truro are delighted to celebrate 40 years since
their Grade II* listed building was transformed
into the hotel we all know today. Built in the
1800s, from manor house to Cornish convent,
The Alverton has a colourful and fascinating past.
In 1984, the religious convent was converted into
a grand countryhouse hotel, making its mark in
Cornish hospitality. Since then, The Alverton has
welcomed hundreds of thousands of guests from
around the world to stay in Cornwall.
To mark the 40-year anniversary, The Alverton are
throwing a ruby-themed ball in The Great Hall on
the 7th of September. The Great Hall is the hotel’s
spectacular wedding and events venue, featuring
the similar jaw-dropping, gothic-revival architecture
that can be found in Truro Cathedral.
“Truro is such a vibrant city, and we are proud
to support the residents and the wider county,
whether it’s with our plastic-free initiatives, charity
fundraisers, or community events. The Ruby Ball
is a chance to get everyone together to raise a
glass to The Alverton, and its bright future ahead.”
The Ruby Ball promises to be a memorable and
glamorous affair. A cocktail and chocolate fountain
reception, four-courses created by Executive
Chef Nick Hodges, drinks and dancing with a live
performance from Falmouth Soul Sensations is all on
the agenda, and the dress code is head-to-toe red.
Tickets are on sale for £75 per person.
For those who can’t make the party, the Cornish
hotel will also be offering a ruby twist on their famous
afternoon tea menu exclusively throughout September.
in front of you’ll find colorful shop front - Truro
Wool run by the lovely Julie who is knitter
extraordinaire! Next door to the right is Cornish
owned and family-run jewellers - Douglas Hughes.
They design beautiful affordable bespoke jewellery
to buy from their showroom, or why not commission
them to design that ultra special piece.
Turn left from St Mary’s St Mews and you’re in New
Bridge Street. There’s the White Hart, dating from
the 1760s (at least), still using its original name, and
extending a friendly (and often musical) welcome to
one and all.
New Bridge Street owes its existence to Truro
Turnpike Trust. Formed in 1755, the Trust set about
improving Truro’s roads. In the 1770s it constructed
a new bridge to replace ‘steppings’ over the
River Allen.
Land to east and west of New Bridge Street was
occupied with tanning, tin smelting and boat
building. The 1888 Lake’s Directory portrays a hive
of different businesses, making and mending,
trading from the same premises you see today.
The Ferris family made a fortune from the tannery
trade, and became developers, owning much
property close-by, including the silted-up
medieval pool which is now the car park. Here
a tangle of workshops, yards, stores and sheds
accommodated many of the artisans who built
C18th and C19th Truro - Ferris projects employing
them to execute designs by Truro’s leading
Georgian architect, Philip Sambell.
On the riverbank east of New Bridge Street, behind
the St Clement Inn and Roundhouse, John Cooper
Furniss made his fortune manufacturing Cornish
Fairings - the best ginger biscuit in the world!
As well as giving his name to the only still-visible
island in the Truro delta valley - now a lovely garden
to be found by nipping along the Riverside Walk
by Cashbrokers, Furniss was a charitable Victorian
entrepreneur. He would have loved the Oxfam shop
being close neighbours.
Langdons made bicycles and then changed course
to become chandlers. Their premises by the bridge
(now occupied by Bridge Antiques) may be the
oldest building in the street. Just opposite is a fine
doorway which opened on to Enys Quay, beside the
Polish Shop Rogolik.
The Enys family had traded from Truro since about
the C14th. Amongst other imports, tea is now sold
by Tugboat. Exports would have included Truro
Holiday advice from
Citizens Advice
If you’re planning a holiday this year,
the chances are you’ll have the relaxing
break you deserve, but there are a
few things you can do in advance to
help your holiday go smoothly. That
includes the golden rule of getting
travel insurance and brushing up on
what your rights are if something goes
wrong.
The first thing to do is check if your passport
is in date. Renewing can take several weeks
so you don’t want to leave this until the last
minute. You can check the validity of your
passport for your trip on GOV.UK by seeing
the entry requirements of the country you’re
travelling to. This is especially important if
you’re flying to Europe as EU countries no
longer accept passports that are more than ten
years old. If your passport was issued pre-Brexit
then the expiry date might be more than ten
years from the issue date, but if it’s older than
ten years, you’ll need to get it renewed for EU
travel - even if it’s still in date.
Flight delays and cancellations could happen to
any of us, so it’s worth knowing what your rights
are if this happens. If your flight is delayed long
enough, your airline has to give you access
to food and drink vouchers, phone calls and
emails, and accommodation if you’re delayed
overnight. If your flight is cancelled, you have a
legal right to a full refund or replacement flight
to help you get to your destination.
Bags going missing is another classic
holiday nightmare. But you do have a right
to compensation if your airline delays, loses
or damages your checked-in luggage. The
Citizens Advice website shows you how to
do this.
You might also get compensation for other
things, like a day trip getting cancelled, or
if you paid for a deluxe room but only got a
standard one. This will depend on whether
you booked a package holiday, made ‘linked
travel arrangements’ or organised the holiday
yourself as an independent traveller, so it’s
worth checking to see what compensation
you can get.
Finally, Citizens Advice says you should get
travel insurance, as it can cover many of the
things already mentioned, like flight delays
and lost luggage, but also things like a holiday
cancellation and medical emergencies. You
should get insurance as soon as you book a
holiday to make sure you’re covered from
the get go, but check first to see if you’re
covered for what you need through an
existing insurance policy or through your
bank account.
Hopefully you won’t face any problems
while on holiday, but early planning and
preparations can go a long way. If something
goes wrong and you need advice on a
consumer problem, check the Citizens Advice
website at citizensadvice.org.uk
How minimalist
are you?
What really matters? Whether we’re spring
cleaning our houses or reassessing how we
spend our precious time and energy, this is
an important question that the concept of
minimalism asks.
Aside from the art movement, minimalism exists as
the idea of keeping only what you need and what
serves you in your life, removing sources of clutter
and overcrowding. Making space for what matters
most and dedicating ourselves deeply to what we
truly care about could be a way to find more peace
and purpose in the frantic pace of our daily lives.
Perhaps we can begin with the stuff. A minimalist
home is not only less expensive and easier to
maintain, it also has positive impacts for the
environment as consumption is reduced. The
effects of overconsumption are evident by the
rapidly deteriorating health of our planet and the
ecosystems we depend on for food, water and
survival. Pollution of all kinds pervades our precious
environment. Could this be an outward reflection of
all the ‘stuff’ we have accumulated in our homes and
lives?
Instead of buying more, let’s focus on reducing,
reusing and recycling. Instead of buying lots of
stuff, the money saved could be spent on buying
higher quality and more sustainable products, such
as organic hemp or linen clothing to serve you a
lifetime.
An excellent example of this was the Sustainable
Fashion Show at Climate Action Day in Amersham
on Saturday 23rd March where students from the
local secondary schools either hand-crafted outfits
made from recycled materials or upcycled their
charity shop finds! Clothes are not the only things
we can declutter. Technological gadgets, household
appliances and the consumption of many
other things can be reduced for a cleaner home
and cleaner planet. Mahatma Gandhi echoed this
belief: ‘Live simply, so others may simply live’.
There are also proven positive psychological
impacts of decluttering your external and internal
space. The money you spend on stuff can instead
be spent on activities and trips to enhance your
experiences and enjoy time with loved ones. A
sense of freedom and happiness can also arise
from detaching from material possessions,
allowing you to focus more on aspects of your life
that you truly value. This could include personal
development, relationships and hobbies. The
online blog ‘Becoming Minimalist’, written by
American author, Joshua Becker, says: ‘Minimalism
is the intentional promotion of the things that bring
you joy and the removal of those that do not’.
The benefits of minimalism have been advocated
since ancient times across countless cultures
including the Chinese author Wu-Men (1183-1260)
wrote: ‘Ten thousand flowers in spring, the moon
in autumn, a cool breeze in summer, snow in
winter. If your mind isn’t clouded by unnecessary
things, this is the best season of your life.’
We all know the feeling of rushing from person to
person, place to place, project to project.
Minimalism is not just the decluttering of ‘stuff’
from your home, but also identifying what
unnecessarily drains your time and energy,
allowing space for new ideas, creativity and peace.
Is Cornwall a
leader in UK wind
farms?
The geographical location of
Cornwall creates ideal conditions for
wind energy production. As most
residents of Cornwall will know,
consistent and strong winds come
from the Atlantic Ocean allowing for
the effective use of wind turbines.
The hilly terrain and expansive areas also provide
optimal sites for reliable turbine instillation.
The country’s first commercial wind farm was
established in Delabole (a Cornish village) in
1991. Since then, the region has embraced
wind power as a crucial component of its
renewable energy strategy, aiming to achieve
carbon neutrality by 2030. (Vaughan, 2017)
Many of the wind farms in Cornwall are owned
and operated by private companies as well as
independent power producers. In the case of
the previously mentioned, Delabole Wind Farm,
it was initially developed by a local cooperative
and is now owned by Good Energy, a renewable
energy company. This wind farm consists of 10
turbines with a total capacity of 9.2 megawatts
(MW), generating enough electricity to power
around 7,000 homes annually. (Daly, 2021)
Another significant player in Cornwall’s wind
energy sector is Cornwall Council itself. In 2020,
the council invested in the region’s first smart
grid-enabled wind turbine, which it owns and
operates. This turbine has a capacity of 3.3 MW
and is estimated to generate enough green
energy to power over 1,440 Cornish homes
each year. (Holmes, 2021)
Cornwall is at the forefront of integrating wind
energy into the grid through innovative projects like
the Cornwall Local Energy Market (LEM).
This EU-funded trial, led by Centrica, aimed
to increase the amount of renewable energy
deployed by managing the electricity network m
ore efficiently. The LEM brought together Cornish
homes and businesses via an online platform,
allowing network operators to buy energy
flexibility from local sources, helping to balance
grid demand and capacity. (Holmes, 2021)
The smart grid-enabled wind turbine owned by
Cornwall Council is also designed to make small
adjustments to its output, smoothing peaks and
troughs in electricity supply and demand on the
grid. This capability allows for greater reliance
on zero-carbon energy sources. (Holmes, 2021)
To conclude, Cornwall’s ideal geographical
conditions, coupled with its driven community
in wind energy, have placed the region as a
leader in this renewable sector. With a mix of
private and public investments and innovative
grid integration projects, Cornwall is playing a
pivotal role in the UK’s transition to a net-zero
future, effectively utilising wind power as a crucial
component of its renewable energy strategy.
John Rowe and
the Enchanted
Fairy Trail
Recently, I had the pleasure of
spending some time walking around
the Enchanted Fairy Trail with John
Rowe - the instigator and craftsman
behind the construction and creation
of the beautiful fairy doors.
If you haven’t had a chance to visit - it’s a
magical place that is filled with nature spirits,
fairies, elfs and Cornish Piskies. Let your
imagination run wild… Children and adults -
young and old will enjoy walking through this
woodland area, admiring and marveling at the
unique display of fairy doors.
Lovingly made deer out of a church pew in honor of
Jean McNaughton. John has named her Mc.
He also works closely with Truro Rangers to
preserve the woodland for nature’s wildlife
including installing bat boxes high in the trees
and also traditional bird boxes. The team like
to encourage visitors to take litter home with
them - so please observe the sign!
John channels his energy into creating
beautiful hand crafted fairy doors for all sorts
of people. Some who have lost loved ones but
also for those people alive who have touched
their hearts.
John has helped so many people over the
years. People feel joy, admiration and also
comfort when visiting the enchanted trail
and John fills their hearts with positive
energy. Many visitors far and wide have
visited.
John also works with local artists and they help
him with some of the more finer and intricate
door decorating. Simone Campbell is one
such artist. However another very dear friend
who helped John for many years was a lady
called Jean McNaughton. Sadly she died 18
months ago and in her memory, John made
a wooden deer in her honour. John loves to
reuse pieces of wood or discarded materials
and the body of the deer is actually made out
of a church pew!
This summer if you are visiting Truro or live
locally take a walk to this lovely magical
space and make sure you thank the fairies,
elf’s, nature spirits and Cornish Piskies for
looking after the Enchanted Trail, protecting
the Fairy Doors and all that visit.
This year’s Summer Reading
Challenge theme is ‘Marvellous
Makers’ and will begin in July.
This will be a celebration of the creative
arts exploring how stories can be told
through reading and the wide variety of
creative arts. Just read a total of 6 books
over the summer holidays. Come in to see
us each time you’ve read two books, and
you can collect stickers and prizes along the
way, and then receive a medal and certificate
on completion.
Love the Reading Challenge and talking about
books, but too old to take part? We’re also
looking for volunteers, aged 12-16 to help
deliver the challenge. You’ll talk to the
children about the books that they’ve read,
give out the stickers and prizes as well
as helping with any activities during the
holidays.
If you’re interested, please email
truro.library@liscornwall.org.uk or pop
in and see us.
Safe cycling Truro
to St Agnes
Chiverton multiuser bridge is open!
Following some delays in the
construction process the Chiverton
multiuser bridge was completed in
April.
With its design reflecting the adjoining
Cornish Mining World Heritage site, its blue and
yellow colour scheme and spanning 48 metres
it makes for an iconic landmark. Supporters
and representatives of the agencies involved in
the delivery of the bridge gathered to mark its
opening. Horse riders and their horses were also
there to try it out. The structure was designed to
accommodate horses and so has high parapets
to ensure the animals cannot see to the road
below. A group of friends dubbed the ‘Pink
Ladies of St Agnes’ because of the pink cycling
jackets they wear were keen to be some of the
first people to cycle across the bridge. They
are looking forward to being able to cycle to
their weekly swimming session at Truro College
once the Saints Trail path is complete, later
this year.
The Saints Trail runs from the bridge along the
south side of the A390 and will eventually cross
to the north through the centre of the new
Langarth junction when this is complete towards
the end of this year. The trail will then continue to
the Langarth Park and Ride site when it will join
the existing shared path via Threemilestone into
Truro.
As we write this the trail currently terminates just
after the Penstraze junction (coming from the
St Agnes direction) and cyclists have to join the
traffic to cycle onwards to Truro. The road here
is narrowed due to the road works and it is very
busy with heavy traffic. However, we are hoping
that when you read this, a temporary safe route
will have been put in place to make it safe to
cycle. Please check Cornwall Council’s Saints
Trail website for the latest update on this.
The Council’s vision is for a segregated path from
Threemilestone to the MacDonalds roundabout
along the A390 utilising land for the Langarth
development as this becomes available. It will
also be possible to cycle on the segregated path
along the Northern Access Road running through
the new Langarth development to Treliske
hospital when this is completed in summer 2025.
A direct section of the off-road Saints Trail along
the B3277 Teagle Straight into St Agnes has not
yet been delivered but remains an aim. In the
meantime, people will be able to cycle the back
road route via Wheal Butson to get between the
bridge and St Agnes.
