Coolcations 

We share holidays that are cool in more ways than one. 

Summer months in mainland Europe have become hotter 

with our changing climate. Last July, daily average 

temperatures were between 17°C and 32°C, while 

heatwaves in some Greek destinations surpassed 40°C. 

“If you’re a sun-worshipper who enjoys the heat, then 

you’ll be overjoyed,” says Karen Noble, Sovereign Luxury 

Travel’s Regional Destination Manager. 

“But we’ve also noticed a trend in guests asking us 

for destination suggestions that won’t be too hot, 

particularly if bringing younger family members along.” 

If you can travel towards the end of summer and into 

September and October, or in the springtime, you'll notice 

more agreeable temperatures in places such as the Greek 

and Spanish islands. But we also recommend a few tropical 

destinations, where at certain times of the year, it's typical 

to experience hot sunny days with quick heavy showers that 

cool you off. 

But as far as we’re concerned, it’s never just the temperature 

- be it sweltering or mild - that makes a holiday cool. As we 

highlight over the following pages, it's also the vibe of your 

resort, unique experiences, and all-important attentive service.

CASALE PANAYIOTIS 

CYPRUS 

What is it? 

A delightfully rustic hotel that's been forged from a revitalised village tucked 

up in the stunning Troodos Mountains. In its former days, Kalopanayiotis was a 

thriving spa town! 

What makes it cool? 

The experiences here are second to none, with opportunities to learn how 

to harvest honey, make mountain cheeses or baskets, or enjoy a Cypriot 

wine-tasting with an expert. And did we mention the ancient spa rituals, 

including ice mist and a snow cabin? 

Best time to go? 

The Troodos Mountains are milder than the rest of Cyprus, so they are ideal for 

summer with highs of 26°C and lows of 17°C, and early autumn.

AL MAHA, A LUXURY COLLECTION DESERT RESORT & SPA 

DUBAI 

What is it? 

This unusual five-star oasis resort is designed like a traditional Bedouin Camp. 

It lies amid the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, just an hour from Dubai 

International Airport. 


You’re staying in the desert! Unique experiences include camel treks, desert 

wildlife safaris, archery, and fine dining under a blanket of stars! It’s also an 

adults-only experience, with a lavish spa and the chance to stay in a luxurious 

Arabian suite with a private pool. 


Dubai Desert gets cool at night and hot during the day. We recommend 

November to March to avoid the occasional sandstorm. January is the coolest 

month when temperatures range from 14°C and 25°C.

BON SOL RESORT AND SPA 

MAJORCA 

What is it? 

Located in the exclusive coastal retreat of Illetas in southwest Majorca, it’s 

a four-star hotel with its own little beach that’s absolutely packed full of 

character. Expect plenty of sunspots, mini-golf, and complimentary yoga! 


Every single room is uniquely styled and a far cry from resorts you typically find 

in the Balearics. There are quirky elements, too, such as a tunnel to get to the 

pool! This suave hotel has exceptionally warm and caring service, having been 

owned by the same family since the 1950s. 


If you like heat, August is great, with expected highs of 30°C, but it's also 

perfect in autumn and spring, when it's both cooler and quieter.

SANTA CATALINA, A ROYAL HIDEAWAY HOTEL 

GRAN CANARIA 

What is it? 

A swanky, historic five-star hotel in the heart of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria 

that boasts four restaurants, one of which holds a much-coveted Michelin star, 

two bars, and an exclusive rooftop area with a magical swimming pool! 


Oozing with Canarian charm, this iconic hotel is a celebrity bolthole! Back in 

the day, guests included opera soprano Maria Callas, writer Agatha Christie, 

and eminent political leader Winston Churchill. More recently, it's sheltered 

Brad Pitt, Marion Cotillard, and Prince Charles. 


Gran Canaria is excellent all year round, and this northern corner is slightly 

milder than the south. November through March boasts sunny days without the 

crowds, with average lows of 16°C and highs of 25°C. 


MINOS BEACH ART HOTEL 

CRETE 

What is it? 

Located in a gorgeous waterfront setting just 800 metres from the glamorous 

town of Aghios Nikolaos lies this unusual hotel where, as the name suggests, it’s 

like staying in a cool, contemporary art gallery that meets barefoot luxury! 


You'll find stunning works of art at every turn and a fabulous sculpture park 

among its tranquil gardens. It also takes Cretan culture to new heights with 

many excursions. Our favourite activity? Tucking into a floating breakfast in your 

private pool! 


It's a little gem during September and October and late springtime when the 

weather is pleasant and rain-free. If you prefer the heat, visit in July or August.

Consider Rhodes 

Crete is the biggest island and is bursting with natural 

beauty and fascinating historical sites that feature in the 

great Greek ancient myths, so it’s no wonder that it pulls in 

a crowd. Equally brilliant is Rhodes, which is home to the 

same style of architecture, with whitewashed towns that 

straddle gorgeous turquoise bays and marinas bursting with 

al fresco tavernas, boutiques, and bars for a lively evening. 

And the landscapes? Well, they are beautiful, with vast 

pine forests, olive groves, and sweeping hills dotted with 

traditional mountain hamlets, monasteries, and ancient 

windmills, which are great for outdoor activities. 

It also packs a punch with its history, such as the authentic 

walled city of Rhodes Old Town, which holds 200-year-old 

legends, or Lindos with its hillside acropolis and ancient 

ruins that date back to Trojan times! 

If you like Santorini... 

How about the Peloponnese? 

The sunrises and sunsets of Santorini over the caldera are 

world-famous, yet you’ll be equally blown away by the 

ones in Peloponnese, we promise. 

On the southwest coast of mainland Greece and 

overlooking the beautiful sparkles of the Ionian Sea, the 

Peloponnese is often overlooked - and wrongly so, in 

our opinion. In fact, it’s the least visited region in Greece 

despite its rich history of the Olympics. This means you can 

have a truly authentic holiday that guarantees genuinely 

warm hospitality, even from passersby. 

If you liked Skiathos... 

You’ll love P arga 

Skiathos is an undeniably cosmopolitan island with its 

glittering harbours, secluded beaches, and pine-forested 

hills - but then, so is Parga on Greece's Ionian coast! 

With its worry-free, relaxed ambience, Parga is a rising 

star in the Greek islands, and no wonder, with its pictureperfect 

coastline of emerald waters brushing tiny bays. 

Just like in Santorini’s Oia Village, you can purposefully 

lose yourself in the alleyways of pretty historic villages, 

using the horizon of the sea as your compass when you’re 

ready for some downtime on a golden sandy beach or 

wish to cool off exploring underwater worlds with some 

snorkelling. 

Peloponnese is also famed for its rolling vineyards and 

olive groves, where you can watch grapes and olives 

being harvested and taste-test them on a tour. And that

for a spot of winter sunshine.

I first heard about Sovereign Luxury Travel many years ago when a 

local travel agent recommended the company. Back then, we had 

a lovely holiday in the Canary Islands, and the organisation of it all 

was fantastic. 

We don’t get to have a proper holiday that often as my husband 

Ivan has his own business, and we’re usually busy looking after our 

grandchildren, plus we live in a very pretty place in the countryside 

that is hard to tear ourselves away from. 

When we have travelled, we’ve always tended to visit my family in 

Germany, my aunt, who had a villa in Italy, and my son, who lived 

in Abu Dhabi for five years. 

The private transfers to and from the resort were an excellent 

experience - the cars were luxurious and immaculate and the 

drivers were courteous, helpful, and gave us a lot of information 

about the island. 

The resort and all its facilities were clean, well-looked after and 

maintained. In our suite the espresso machine and the beverage 

facilities were always replenished and the towels were changed 

daily, which was spot on. 

But what stood out was the staff, who were 

responsive and friendly and delivered very good 

service. My husband is very talkative, and it was 

lovely how approachable the staff were but also 

never over-the-top in trying to serve us. 

We decided against all-inclusive and instead opted for the 

Preferred Club, which was great. There was a special room with 

glass doors by the reception area that we could access from early 

morning to about 7pm at night. 

But I love the sun and the Mediterranean waters, and I like feeling 

sun-kissed in the winter, so I persuaded my husband that we should 

have a proper break. It’s lovely to have something booked and in 

the diary to look forward to! 

This held a small seating area and a little corner with cold drinks, 

including bottles of water, and a selection of fruit and yoghurts. 

You could go and have a glass of champagne there or as much 

tea or coffee as you liked. I’m not much of a drinker but I discovered 

Aperol spritz for the first time. 

We got in touch with our Personal Travel Planner, Leanne King, last 

November and gave her our budget and a suggestion of when we 

wanted to go. 

I’ve always found that choosing your holiday 

destination is a bit like finding the right school for 

your children! You have a whole list of what you 

like and go through it comparing all the details. 

I wanted a holiday that would guarantee the chance for us to relax, 

without having to journey too far. Leanne was brilliant and very 

professional. My husband had lots of questions, and she was very 

responsive to all of them. 

Leanne suggested several options based on our conversations. 

After reviewing the different resorts, we landed on Secrets 

Lanzarote Resort & Spa due to the room description of the Junior 

Suite Ocean View Room, which was more than adequate, and 

because it was close to the marina. We’d never been to Lanzarote 

before, but we weren’t really inclined to explore on this holiday. 

Depending on the time of the day there would be a fresh selection 

in the Club room: pastries in the morning, tiny sandwiches and dips 

and veggies. It was perfect as we didn’t want a proper lunch and 

this tied us over until our evening meal. 

Originally Ivan had plans to do various activities 

like horseback riding, but it just wasn’t required. 

We both caught up on our reading and the days 

flew past. And you need to recharge! 

Ivan likes to stay fit while on holiday and he says the gym was 

wonderful. We both used the spa and had a lovely, professional 

massage and facial in a calming environment. 

Right from the first day, I bonded with one of the waitresses, and 

I thought it was really sweet that she made a point of coming to 

say goodbye.

SUN & SERENITY IN LANZAROTE 

The food was brilliant. I don’t think it could have been 

any better, and I’m a fussy eater! There is such a variety of 

restaurants and options that I even had sushi one evening. 

The World Café restaurant is where you have a buffetstyle 

breakfast or evening meal. However, the chefs cook 

everything fresh for you out front. As they cook, the chefs 

make recommendations - adding a little something to a 

piece of steak or extra chilli to a stirfry - which really did 

make them perfect. 

There’s an hour of entertainment each evening, which 

we felt they got completely right. There was something 

new every night, from contemporary flamenco dancing to 

Bollywood to a swing band or even an opera singer. 

We are now considering returning to Secrets Lanzarote 

Resort & Spa over Christmas because it would be lovely not 

to have to cook the Christmas dinner for a change!

Emma Hopkins, shares her experience of crafting 

luxury holidays. 

I’ve always loved travel and used to work for a sister travel 

company many years ago, so it was great to join Sovereign Luxury 

Travel last year. My specialism is our short-haul destinations. 

A typical day starts at 8:50 a.m. when our team has our morning 

meeting. Then, it’s straight to work crafting holidays for our guests! 

We aren’t your typical run-of-the-mill holiday provider: we take 

time to ask questions and get to know you so that we can match 

the right hotel and holiday to the right guest. 

I absolutely love planning our guests' 

holidays. I know that I’m not just crafting 

holidays but also creating memories. 

Our guests' requirements are varied. Some might want to know 

about the food quality, while others want to ensure that their 

room is a good size or has a great view. I’m always in close 

contact with our accommodation partners so that I can 

share requested information - like the thread count of 

the bedding, what cocktails are on the bar menu, or if 

there’s a pillow menu, for example. 

I recently had a guest who was unwell but 

wanted to travel, and it felt great to give her 

that service and confidence to book a holiday 

and have something to look forward to 

while undergoing treatment. She really 

appreciated the small gifts we showered 

her with during her holiday, and I feel 

proud that we could give her such a 

good experience. 

I’ve seen far more extended 

families travelling together. 

I guess grandparents, 

parents, children, aunties, 

uncles, and siblings want 

more time together, 

and these holidays 

are lovely to plan.

Our ‘added touch of luxury’ is our 

attention to detail and all the little 

things we add on and consider. 

Probably the quirkiest request I received 

was from a guest who wanted no other 

nearby resorts or hotels, and it was fun 

identifying the best fit for them. 

Most guests are keen to have a quick 

transfer, and one of the most common 

questions I receive is how far their 

accommodation is from the airport! 

I also often get asked if there’s a shuttle 

bus into any nearby towns. 

It’s great to see guests keen to get out 

and immerse themselves in the local 

culture. 

All our Personal Travel Planners and 

operations team stay well-informed by 

regularly visiting our destinations and 

experiencing the accommodation for 

ourselves, which is a real perk of the job! 

INTO MYKONOS 

My recent work trip was to Mykonos, 

a beautiful Greek island that I hadn’t 

visited before. 

The island isn’t large - just 33 square 

miles - so it can be a surprise to see 

the runway size! If you enjoy a quick 

transfer, then Mykonos is a brilliant bet - 

our hotels are just 10 to 15 minutes from 

the airport. Despite the proximity, you 

never hear planes going overhead - 

although you sometimes see them. 

With just a three-and-a-half-hour 

flight from London Gatwick, enjoying 

Mykonos on a long weekend that mixes 

both relaxing and exploring is perfectly 

feasible. Alternatively, we can arrange a 

10-day itinerary where you get to explore 

Mykonos and neighbouring islands. 

Mykonos Town itself is absolutely fantastic. 

You can start at one end and explore the 

streets filled with flowers and olive trees 

before heading to the six windmills and 

Little Venice. It’s pretty popular for locals 

to sit along the wall and hang their feet 

over the side with a few drinks as the waves 

crash up. 

I was told to look out for Peter, the resident 

pelican who hangs around Little Venice, 

but sadly, I didn’t spot him. Maybe you’ll 

have better luck? 

The cuisine in Mykonos is absolutely 

amazing and very healthy. You’ll find the 

freshest ingredients, and even something 

simple like a Greek salad is fantastic with 

the local olive oil and fresh feta cheese. 

The lanes of Mykonos Town are filled 

with boutique shops selling trinkets and 

jewellery and little restaurants! Wander 

around, and you’ll see people tucking 

into flavoursome, healthy gyros, perfectly 

spiced souvlaki, or cooling ice cream. 

You may not have tasted 

Greek wine because they don’t 

produce enough to export, but 

the local wine is excellent! 

Mykonos can be a little blowy due to 

the Arctic winds, but you’ll find ideal 

temperatures most of the year. Visit from 

mid-May to early June, and September 

right through to early November for 

temperatures around 20°C! I was surprised 

to learn that locals can comfortably 

sunbathe on the beach in November. 

You’ll find plenty of safe Blue Flag beaches 

that are great for watersports and 

younger families. 

Mykonos is also great if you fancy a private 

pool in your accommodation, as many of 

the island’s hotels offer this. I recommend 

the Leading Hotels of the World, 

Mykonos Grand Hotel & Resort.

Canarian sheep and some 

cows/goats, and the lightly 

smoked queso palmero cheese, 

both from Gran Canaria, as well 

as queso majorero, a goat’s milk 

cheese from Fuerteventura. 

KNOW YOUR MOJO 

Mojo is a delicious spicy sauce made with garlic, olive oil, 

cumin, salt, and vinegar. Choose from mojo picón or rojo, 

a hotter red sauce often made with red chilli peppers, 

or mojo verde, a still-kicking but more herby green sauce 

made with green peppers and coriander. 

PAPA! POTATO! 

Potato varieties - and dishes - are 

all the rage in the Canaries, from 

the ‘old’ potato, the papas antiguas 

de Canarias, to the favoured black 

potato, papa negra. It will never 

taste as good as in the Canary 

Islands, as the volcanic soil gives it a 

distinctive flavour. 

Don't miss the popular 

appetiser papas arrugadas, 

which translates as wrinkled 

potatoes. Small potatoes are 

cooked in seawater to make 

them soft on the inside and 

crinkly and salty on the outside. 

They are always served with 

mojo (sauce) - and best enjoyed 

with a chilled sundowner!

SWEET TOOTH? TRY THESE DESSERTS 

Bienmesabe, which translates as tastes good to me, is a soft purée 

made from ground almonds, egg yolk, sugar, lemon zest, and 

cinnamon that's often served with ice cream. 

Gofio is a nutritious flour made from toasted corn and wheat 

cereals and is as old as the first settlers in the Canaries! It's 

often mixed into soups and stews, but you may also find it at 

breakfast mixed with milk and sugar in a puréed form known 

as gofio escaldado. You can visit an ancient granary at 

Cenobio de Valerón in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. 

Did you know that goat is the meat of choice in 

Fuerteventura and Lanzarote? It's surprisingly 

good, too! Goats are reared locally and 

cooked tenderly in traditional stews using an 

aromatic blended base called a sofrito. 

Príncipe Albertos: a classic dark 

chocolate and nutty mouse named 

after the fashionable 1970s head 

of Monaco. 

Frangollo: A dish made from millet flour, 

almonds, lemon zest, and raisins. 

DINE OUT IN STYLE 

Tenerife’s bees produce delicious honey using pollen from 

the tajinaste plant, which grows on the Mount Teide volcano 

crater. There are also local wines named after this flower.
