NAHB AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL<br />

TRANSFORMERS<br />

Of particular concern, the price of distribution transformers<br />

are up 72%, . Wait times for distribution transformers<br />

often can take from 12 to 24 months, and in some isolated<br />

cases, the lag time approaches three years. These delays<br />

are worsened by the fact that transformer prices have<br />

soared 72% since the start of the pandemic. NAHB is urging<br />

Congress to utilize the Defense Production Act and oppose<br />

efforts by the Department of Energy to increase the energy<br />

conservation codes.<br />

ENERGY CODES<br />

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development<br />

and the U.S. Department of Agriculture have implemented<br />

a policy where they will insure mortgages for new homes<br />

only if they are built to the 2021 International Energy<br />

Conservation Code (IECC).NAHB is calling on Congress to<br />

include a provision in the fiscal year 2025 Transportation,<br />

Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies<br />

Appropriations bill to prevent HUD from using any funds to<br />

implement the 2021 IECC for all HUDand USDA-financed<br />

newly constructed housing.<br />

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT FUNDING<br />

A severe shortage of labor in the construction industry is<br />

worsening the housing affordability crisis through higher<br />

home building costs and construction delays. In any given<br />

month, there is a shortage of roughly 400,000 construction<br />

workers, and home builders will need to add 2.2 million<br />

new workers over the next three years just to keep up with<br />

demand.<br />

HBAMWG LOCAL CHAPTER UPDATE<br />

This 2024 year has already been proving to exceed our expectations<br />

as an association. We are one of the current fastest growing<br />

HBA’s in Georgia. This year alone, we have had a 26.4% increase<br />

in members. Additionally, our<br />

retention rate has increased<br />

to 90% retention for builder<br />

members and 84% retention<br />

for overall membership.<br />

As we continue in our efforts<br />

to provide the building<br />

industry with advocacy,<br />

networking, education,<br />

community service, and<br />

savings, we would like to<br />

highlight some great news this year to date: 82% of our builder<br />

members utilize our association for continuing education credits<br />

towards their licensure renewal at a discounted rate<br />

Our builder members on average receive $1,588.75 from HBA<br />

rebates through our state association, HBAG. We have added<br />

more general membership meetings for our members to connect<br />

with one another; making the total count to 10 meetings annually.<br />

We have added new events to increase member experience<br />

and networking opportunities in a more relaxed setting, like our<br />

Cornhole Tournament.<br />

Our community relations has improved by working locally with<br />

veterans to promote PTSD training and suicide awareness training,<br />

school systems to increase engagement for workforce development<br />

and trade skills education, local animal shelters, to push for more<br />

funding towards heartworm medications and supplies, and children<br />

in all 10 of our counties foster care systems for hygiene products,<br />

clothing, and all other needs.<br />

Black women to make a significant impact. Here’s<br />

how Black women in construction can contribute to<br />

workforce development and forward-looking strategies:<br />

Diversifying the Workforce<br />

Black women can play a crucial role in diversifying the<br />

construction industry, which has traditionally been maledominated.<br />

By entering the field in greater numbers, they can<br />

bring new perspectives and solutions to the table, enriching<br />

the creative and problem-solving processes within the sector.<br />

Leadership in Sustainable Practices<br />

With the industry’s shift towards sustainability, Black<br />

women can lead the way in green building practices. Their<br />

expertise can help to steer projects towards more ecofriendly<br />

materials and processes, thus contributing to<br />

Atlanta’s vision of environmental stewardship.<br />

Educational Outreach and Mentorship<br />

Black women in construction can help shape the future of<br />

the workforce through educational outreach. By mentoring<br />

young women and girls, especially those from minority<br />

communities, they can inspire the next generation to pursue<br />

careers in construction, engineering, and architecture.<br />

Advocacy for Inclusive Policies<br />

By taking active roles in policymaking and advocacy, Black<br />

women can influence the development of inclusive policies<br />

that ensure equal opportunities for all individuals in the<br />

construction industry. This can lead to a more equitable<br />

Involvement in or creation of training and certification<br />

innovation, and community upliftment.<br />

Innovation in Construction Technology<br />

As Atlanta embraces smart technologies in construction,<br />

Black women can contribute to innovation by being at the<br />

forefront of technological advancements, from 3D printing<br />

in building processes to the use of AI and machine learning<br />

for project management.<br />

Championing Affordable Housing<br />

Black women can leverage their unique perspectives to<br />

advocate for and participate in the development of affordable<br />

housing projects. This can help address one of the major<br />

challenges in Atlanta’s urban development, ensuring that<br />

growth benefits a broader spectrum of the population.<br />

Enhancing Project Management<br />

Black women with skills in project management can lead<br />

complex projects, ensuring that they are completed on time<br />

and within budget, while also meeting the high standards<br />

required by the modern construction industry.<br />

Additional Ways NABWIC Can<br />

Benefit Black Women in Construction<br />

The National Association of Black Women in Construction<br />

(NABWIC), provides advocacy and support in the above<br />

areas by:<br />

1. Promoting Education and Training: Increasing access to<br />

educational programs and vocational training opportunities<br />

is vital for empowering black women in construction.<br />

Scholarships, apprenticeship programs, and mentorship<br />

initiatives can help provide necessary skills and support.<br />

2. Mentorship and Networking Programs: Establishing<br />

mentorship programs that connect black women with<br />

experienced professionals in the industry can provide<br />

guidance, advice, and a strong support system. Networking<br />

events and forums tailored to their needs can also create<br />

valuable connections.<br />

3. Advocating for Equal Opportunities: Construction<br />

companies and industry leaders need to actively advocate<br />

for equal opportunities, eliminating gender and racial<br />

biases in hiring, promotion, and compensation practices.<br />

Implementing inclusive policies and fostering a culture of<br />

diversity will help break down barriers.<br />

4. Enhancing Visibility and Representation: Highlighting<br />

the achievements and successes of black women in<br />

construction through media coverage, conferences,<br />

and industry events is essential. Increasing visibility and<br />

NABWIC’s newest project is to be a historian for the<br />

achievements of Black Women in Construction. By<br />

implementing these solutions, Atlanta can pave the way for<br />

a more inclusive and equitable construction industry, where<br />

black women thrive and contribute their unique talents and<br />

perspectives.<br />

Economic Empowerment<br />

Through Entrepreneurship<br />

By founding and leading their own construction firms,<br />
