T
oke Makinwa is our
cover girl for this edition!
For many reasons, this
edition holds – and
will continue to hold a
special place in my heart.
I first met Toke Makinwa in
2006 during the interview session
for her cover in the November/
December edition of Today’s
Woman Magazine, that year. A
close friend of mine was working
with the Magazine at that time
and invited me to a luxury hotel
in Lagos where the said interview
and photo session was to be held.
Well, let’s say after waiting for
over 4 hours for the star and justpublished
author to show up, I fell
in love with her at first sight.
Since then, toke has gone
up the ladder and ticked many
boxes in my book on what a
complete role model should be.
She has had many setbacks, but
has never allowed any of them to
set her back! Trust me when I say
you will enjoy this edition, and the
feature on our cover girl!
As usual, we have an
overdose of the best fashion
stories and photos that will
make you lick the pages –
literally.
Brace yourself and fasten
your seat belts because BIG
things are coming up at
Glamsquad! We have a lot in
the pipeline, and we cannot
wait to unleash it all out.
Enjoy this edition as you
have enjoyed it all before it,
and most importantly, thank
you for subscribing.
With lots of love,
The 2024 Met Gala, an elaborate
fundraiser for the Costume Institute
at the Metropolitan Museum of Art,
was held on Monday in New York
City. The event theme was “Sleeping
Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,”
with this year’s exhibition spotlighting
“precious masterpieces of fashion”
using technology, Vogue announced
in November 2023.
The 2024 Met Gala co-chairs included Jennifer
Lopez, Bad Bunny, Zendaya, and Chris Hemsworth,
while Loewe’s creative director, Jonathan
Anderson, and TikTok CEO Shou Chew were the
event’s honorary chairs.
Complementing the theme, the dress code for
the event was “The Garden of Time,” inspired by
J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story of the same name.
The story takes place in a “utopia of leisure, art,
and beauty” but has an undercurrent of dystopia,
according to Vogue.
Take a look at how the celebrity attendees
interpreted the theme with their red carpet looks.
Toke Makinwa: A Tale of Resilience and
Success
Love her or not, one thing is undeniable
about Toke Makinwa: her unwavering
determination. Over the past decade, she has
faced numerous challenges that would have
made many give up, yet she continues to
bounce back, evolve, and inspire.
Born on November 3, 1985, in Abuja as the
second child to parents from Idanre, Toke’s
early life was marked by tragedy. At the age
of nine, she lost her parents in a fire accident
and was subsequently adopted by Mr. and Mrs.
Akinyelure. Her secondary education took place
at Federal Government Girls College in Oyo, and
she later graduated from the University of Lagos
with a bachelor’s degree in English Language
and Literature.
Toke’s career in entertainment began with a
failed stint in London, but in 2010, she auditioned
for and was hired by Rhythm FM in Lagos as a
presenter. She quickly became known as the
voice behind “Rhythms of the Night,” a late-night
show featuring serene melodies. Despite an
earlier brief tenure in radio as a teenager, she
was initially discouraged by her foster mother.
In 2011, she joined Tosyn Bucknor and Oreka
Gordis on Cecil Hammond’s TV show “3 Live
Chicks,” where they discussed a variety of topics.
Toke’s career continued to rise as she cohosted
“The Morning Show,” engaging listeners
with interesting topics. Her emotional moment on
air reading the Dana Air crash manifest in 2012,
where a friend was a victim, showcased her
vulnerability and relatability.
Petite, stylish, and charming, Toke soon
received offers to anchor events for major
brands and was featured in significant editorials.
In 2012, she hosted the Most Beautiful Girl in
Nigeria pageant, mingling with beauty queens
from across the country. She also became
an ambassador for UAC Nigeria and signed
endorsement deals with brands like Maggi,
Lipton tea, and Chicken Republic. By the end of
that year, she was recognized as an outstanding
female presenter at the Nigeria Broadcasters
Award ceremony.
In 2014, she co-hosted “Moments with Mo”
alongside Mo Abudu, interviewing a diverse
range of guests. Her marriage to long-time
boyfriend and fitness expert Maje Ayida in
January 2014 ended shortly after due to Maje’s
infidelity. Toke has since shared relationship
advice on her video blog and published a
memoir, “On Becoming,” detailing her life
experiences.
Five Life Lessons from
Toke Makinwa
Toke Makinwa, a Nigerian
media personality, television
host, vlogger, and author, may
not be everyone’s favorite, but
she has undoubtedly achieved
significant success. Her book
“On Becoming” narrates her
journey through life’s struggles,
her marriage, and her faith in
God. Here are five lessons we
can all learn from her:
1. RESILIENCE
No matter how many times life
knocks you down, what matters
is your comeback. Toke’s ability
to bounce back and stay true
to her goals, even after a bad
divorce and media shaming,
is commendable. She rose
above adversity, securing
endorsements and writing her
book.
2. HARD WORK
Success doesn’t come easy;
it requires hard work. Toke
embodies the career-driven,
real boss lady, demonstrating
that hard work is an essential
ingredient in achieving
success.
3. DRIVE AND PASSION
Passion fuels your profession,
and for Toke, her passion for
impacting lives has driven her
career as a media personality.
Despite the challenges, her
drive and passion keep her
moving forward.
4. IGNORE THE NAYSAYERS
There will always be critics
trying to pull you down. Toke’s
advice: let them talk, but
don’t let them stop your shine.
Focus on your goals and keep
moving forward.
5. It’s Never Too Late
It’s never too late to turn a new
leaf or pursue your dreams.
Toke’s story shows that no
matter the setbacks, you can
always rise above them, learn
from your mistakes, and do
better.
On Bleaching Her Skin
Toke has openly admitted that
bleaching her skin was the
“dumbest” thing she ever did.
Grateful for her good genes
and financial resources that
mitigated the side effects, she
candidly shared this during an
interactive session on social
media.
Eager to Be a Mother
In an Instagram post
celebrating Mother’s Day
2024, Toke expressed her
anticipation of becoming a
mother, confident that it will
happen soon. She shared her
joy in celebrating the day as a
godmother.
Return to Reality TV as Gulder
Ultimate Search Anchor
Toke continues to shine as
the host of Gulder Ultimate
Search, a survival reality TV
show. Her journey from being
relatively unknown in 2010 to
becoming a celebrated media
personality is a testament to her
hard work and determination.
Book Review: “On Becoming”
by Toke Makinwa
Toke’s memoir, “On Becoming,”
reveals her traumatic
experiences, insecurities,
and journey to self-discovery.
Despite the challenges, she
has owned her shortcomings
and used her story for selftherapy.
The book is engaging,
well-written, and showcases
the loyalty of her friends who
supported her through tough
times. While the message may
seem confusing at times, Toke’s
transparency and honesty
make it a compelling read.
Toke Makinwa’s New Fragrance
Collection
Toke recently unveiled
her latest unisex perfume
collection under Toke Makinwa
Beauty. The launch event,
held in Lagos, was attended
by celebrities and fans,
including the Lagos State
Commissioner for Arts and
Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka.
REPORTAGE
The collection features three
distinct scents: Vogue, Dive,
and Intense. Toke shared that
she had been working on the
products for three years and
was thrilled with the positive
reception.
Conclusion
Toke Makinwa’s journey is one
of resilience, hard work, and
determination. Despite facing
numerous challenges, she
continues to rise and inspire
others. Her story is a testament
to the power of perseverance
and staying true to one’s goals.
Toke soon
received offers
Best Fashion Combos of
According to our Editors
Maryjane Obilor
At some point during the week, we all face a familiar feeling: the panic of not knowing what to wear.
Despite having a closet full of dresses, pants, skirts, shirts, and more, figuring out how to put together
a cute outfit often leaves us stumped. But there’s one styling trick that rarely fails and can make our
fashion dilemma vanish within minutes: color blocking. Pairing two vibrant colors together—like an
orange top with pink bottoms, or a green dress with a blue blazer—is a surefire way to transform basic pieces
into statement-making looks.
Ahead, we’ve gathered 20 different color and fashion pairings to inspire your next outfit:
2
Green and Blue:
Since blue is a primary color
used to make green, the two
darker tones complement
each other well. Pair them
with white shoes
to add a lighter
touch.
1
Pink and Green:
Green and pink make a
classic combination. The
earthy green tones perfectly
balance the floral hints of
pink. Try wearing a pink top
with green bottoms to look
like a rose.
3
Pink and Red:
Pink and red aren’t just
for Valentine’s Day. A red
crocheted sweater looks
fashionable with pink
metallic pants.
32
www.glamsquadmagazine.com
4
Green and Purple:
This combination might
be surprising, but it works
beautifully. A green skirt can
support the blue and purple
tones in a top for a cohesive
look.
FASHION
5
Purple and Orange:
Purple pairs well with bright
orange. Try a purple
turtleneck with an orange
leather coat to play with both
color and texture.
6
Pink and Blue:
Pink and blue are a classic
pairing seen in cotton
candy, sunsets, and
nurseries. This blend works
just as well in clothing,
balancing feminine and
masculine tones.
7
Green and Yellow:
This outfit layers beautifully
while playing with color
blocking. A long, canary
yellow blazer over a ruffled
green skirt elongates the
upper body and brightens
the outfit.
10
Orange and Yellow:
For an outfit that radiates warmth,
pair orange with yellow. An orange
top with a yellow skirt creates a
flame-like look.
8
Blue and Orange:
Color blocking isn’t limited
to tops and bottoms.
Accessorize with a contrasting
color, like an orange vest over
a blue top, to add warmth to
cool tones.
11
Orange and Green:
To channel an earthy vibe,
combine orange with green.
The warm orange balanced
by muted green creates a
down-to-earth ensemble.
9
Purple and Pink:
For a Barbie-inspired look,
pair pink with purple. A pink
skirt with a purple top or a
pink dress covered by a
purple button-up achieves
this playful style.
12
Blue and Red:
Red, a warm color, pairs
well with blue for color
blocking. While navy and
red work, brighter blues
create a striking look.
34
www.glamsquadmagazine.com
13
Red and Green:
Red and green are opposites
on the color wheel, making
them a perfect pairing for a
cohesive look.
FASHION
14
Red and Yellow:
Two primary colors, red and
yellow, complement each
other. Pair a bright red dress
with pastel yellow pants for
a balanced look.
16
Pink and Orange:
Bright colors like pink and
orange draw attention. A
hot pink hoodie with peach
orange pants or a dress with
a blazer works well.
15
Red and Orange:
Velma from Scooby-Doo
had it right with her orange
turtleneck and red skirt.
These warm colors are great
together.
17
Purple and Yellow:
A light purple coat over a
darker purple dress with
yellow boots creates a striking
outfit. Switch the colors
around for different effects.
Gucci dazzled
London with a starstudded
show at
the Tate Modern,
marking the debut
Cruise collection for creative
director Sabato De Sarno, who
joined the brand last year. The
event drew a glamorous crowd,
including Kate Moss, Dua Lipa,
Daisy Edgar Jones, and Little
Simz.
The collection, described
as “Englishness with an Italian
accent,” played with purposeful
contradictions, subverting
traditional dress codes and
celebrating cultural intersections.
The show notes highlighted
a “sense of tension between
different ideas and ideals,
different identities.” Workwear
merged with street style, delicate
pieces had a tough edge, and
traditional British textures like
tartan and tailoring received a
revitalized Gucci twist.
Gucci’s connection to the
UK capital runs deep. It was in
London, working as a hotel porter
at The Savoy in 1889, that young
Guccio Gucci was inspired by
the stylish guests to start his luxury
leather-goods company.
“I owe a lot to this city; it has
welcomed and listened to me,”
said De Sarno. “The same is true
for Gucci, whose founder drew
inspiration from his experiences
here. The House’s return is driven
by a desire to immerse in its
distinctive essence, its creative
force that harmonizes contrasts.
Today we celebrate that spirit.
Tate Modern is the perfect venue,
with its Turbine Hall embodying
the city’s essence and inclusivity.”
The New French
Riviera Hair Trend
That Suits Everyone
Daniel Rodgers
They say you can’t be what you can’t
see – but there is one exception to
the rule. Those not actually living the
Riviera lifestyle can still embody the
spirit of the South of France via their
hair – and nothing is chicer for summer
than Bardot bangs. One of Google’s top
trending search terms right now, Bardot
bangs are inspired by Brigitte Bardot,
the French actor who is synonymous
with perfect hair.
Lived in, slightly messy and with
plenty of volume and definition,
Bardot’s blonde lengths were the
epitome of beachy – but it is her bangs
we’re paying specific attention to today.
A great example of fuller curtain bangs,
in her silver screen heyday they skimmed
her eyebrows (framing her deep almondshaped
eyes), and graduated into the
rest of the cut, peaking in the centre of her
forehead, in line with her centre parting.
The trend chimes with a wider movement in
hair, says hairstylist Halley Brisker, who works with
everyone from Lily James to Kaia Gerber. “We’re
seeing a move away from harder and sharper
looks towards softer, more gently flattering
ones,” he says. “We could even narrow
this movement down to a particular
era: the ’70s.”
Working on both angular and
rounder faces (“they can soften
sharper features or frame a
rounder face,” explains Brisker),
Bardot bangs are a timeless
style that transcends the trend
cycle. Which is why they worked
so well on Bardot back in the
’60s and ’70s, and continue to
look fresh – and incredibly chic
Working on
The key thing to note about
Bardot bangs is the texture. For
a lived-in, day-two finish, apply
Hershesons’ Zhoosh spray into
roots and rub until it’s absorbed,
or Brisker loves Olaplex’s 4D Dry
Shampoo to “keep bangs oil-free
while plumping and providing
texture along the way”.
Brisker also recommends
getting reacquainted with the
velcro roller for optimal Bardot
bang styling. “I love
a velcro roller,” he
enthuses. “Blow the hair
BEAUTY
The Best Concealers for
Mature Skin, According
to Experts
Chioma Esiu
If your goal is to cover up dark spots, under-eye
circles, and other blemishes, concealer will be
your makeup best friend. However, as skin matures,
it’s crucial to choose the right formula to
avoid creasing and caking throughout the day.
To achieve a flawless look, experts recommend
selecting lightweight, hydrating concealers with a
satin or radiant finish. Adopting a “less is more” approach
is essential. Heavy, full-coverage formulas
are more likely to settle into wrinkles and fine lines.
What to Consider
Key Ingredients
“Look for products with hydrating ingredients like
hyaluronic acid or glycerin,” advises Anna Chacon,
MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Miami.
“These ingredients help prevent the concealer from
settling into fine lines and wrinkles.”
Coverage
Concealers typically offer light, medium, or full coverage.
Experts, including Dr. Chacon, suggest opting
for light to medium coverage. “High-coverage
concealers can look caked on and unnatural,”
says Aimee Carr, a professional makeup artist and
founder of Voodoo Makeup. “They can also be drying,
so stick to something lightweight but buildable.”
Finish
Concealers come in various finishes, including satin,
radiant, and matte. “While finish is based on personal
preference, I recommend satin or radiant finishes
for a plump, youthful glow,” says Dr. Chacon.
How We Selected
Women’s Health editors and contributors constantly
test top-rated cosmetics and skincare products,
including concealers for mature skin. Recently, we
evaluated more than a dozen options, with over
half personally tested by our anonymous testers and
in-house editors. We also consulted four experts—
three makeup artists and a dermatologist—to gather
their recommendations.
Our picks effectively cover dark under-eye circles,
blemishes, redness, and other signs of aging
like sun spots, without caking or creasing. Read on
to discover our list of the best concealers for mature
10 Top Must-See
Africa Honeymoon
Destinations
Grace Ode
Getting your
honeymoon just
right is essential,
but with so
many incredible
destinations to choose from,
how do you decide on the
perfect spot? While there are
numerous romantic places
around the world, few can offer
an unforgettable experience
like an African honeymoon.
With soft-sand beaches, endless
savannahs teeming with wildlife,
and some of the most idyllic
scenery on the planet, Africa
has all the ingredients for a
honeymoon you’ll never forget.
Africa’s honeymoon
destinations are as diverse as
the continent itself. Whether you
choose a single destination or
a combination, Africa offers
luxury accommodations in
spellbinding locations, discreet
service, sumptuous cuisine,
total privacy and exclusivity,
and world-class travel logistics.
Indulge in candle-lit dinners
on a tropical beach or under
a starry sky in the wilderness,
make the most of your private
guide for bespoke safari
activities, or simply soak up the
sun beside your private pool.
Where should you
honeymoon in Africa? Since
1998, we’ve tailor-made African
honeymoons for thousands
of newlyweds from across the
globe – and even some of our
own! Here is our expert advice
on the best African honeymoon
destinations:
Tanzania
1
The Serengeti National
Park provides the stage
for Africa’s famous Great
Wildebeest Migration, but
Tanzania is also a land of big
cats, massive elephant herds,
and thriving chimpanzee-filled
rainforests. With Zanzibar and
its Indian Ocean islands like
Pemba and Mnemba within
easy reach, it’s the perfect
‘bush-and-beach’ African
honeymoon destination. Enjoy
expertly guided game drives,
hot-air ballooning, walking
safaris, night drives, off-road
game viewing, and mountain
biking in private game reserves.
Namibia
2
This friendly and easytraveling
country boasts
excellent wildlife viewing in
Etosha National Park, but its best
African honeymoon destination
is the Namib Desert. During
Namibia’s dry season between
June and October, the Namib
is a mesmerizing land of silent,
primal beauty and night skies
overflowing with stars. Visit the
famous Sossusvlei dunes, walk
up a dune to greet the rising sun,
or take a hot-air balloon flight
for a bird’s-eye view. Explore the
desert with expert local guides
on the lookout for unique wildlife.
sports, hiking, and mountain biking.
Stay at the iconic North Island, a
private jungle-clad granite island
favored by royalty and rock stars, for
unashamed but gentle indulgence.
Your palatial villa comes with its own
pool and can convert into a private
cinema. Enjoy bespoke dining,
whether at the restaurant or in your
Experience Africa’s wildlife as
it was in the days of the first
European explorers. Safari in
Botswana to see elephants in their
tens of thousands, big cats, wild
dogs, and rivers full of crocodiles
FOOD
The Best Foods to Help
You Keep in Shape
[Part II]
Chef Amaka Obiena
I
t seems like every day we wake up to a new “superfood” that will change your life.
With the abundance of information available, how do you know what’s actually good for you?
Here are the top 10 foods you should be eating to help you keep in shape,
according to our experts:
1. FISH
“Eat plenty of fish, which are high
in healthy omega 3 fatty acids, and
smaller portions of red meat to reduce
your risk of diseases like stroke, heart
disease and cancer.” – Bob Canter,
professor of surgery at UC Davis Division
of Surgical Oncology
2. BROCCOLI OR ANY OF THE CRUCIFEROUS
VEGETABLES
“These foods are rich in nutrients including
glucosinolates, which are key in detoxification
processes. These are best served raw or quicksteamed
for five to ten minutes.” – Alex Nella,
pediatric registered dietitian
3. BEETS
“No matter which color – red, yellow, golden
– or which part – root or greens – they contain a
wonderful variety of protective carotenoids. Evidence
suggests their dietary nitrates can be converted to
nitric oxide and improve endurance exercise.” – Alex
Nella, pediatric registered dietitian
4. SPINACH AND OTHER LEAFY GREEN
VEGETABLES
“These are packed with lutein and
zeaxanthin: nutrients that can help protect
against macular degeneration.” – Jeffrey
Caspar, professor of ophthalmology at the
UC Davis Eye Center
FOOD
5. KALE
“It’s a green leafy veggie that I love chopped in
salad or cooked with onion and garlic. It is nutrient
dense, has lots of antioxidants and can help lower
cholesterol.”
– Brandee Waite, director of the UC Davis Sports
Medicine fellowship
6. QUINOA
It is a tasty grain you can cook in
savory or sweet dishes. It is high in fiber
and protein and has a low glycemic
index compared to some other carbs.”
– Brandee Waite, director of the UC
Davis Sports Medicine fellowship
7. ALMONDS
“Almonds have a lot of vitamin E, which
protects against macular degeneration
as well as cataracts. I recommend eating
just a handful a day.” – Jeffrey Caspar,
professor of ophthalmology at the UC
Davis Eye Center
8. MANGOS
“They are low calorie, high in fiber and
vitamins A and C. They also have other vitamins,
minerals and antioxidants and have been linked
with multiple health benefits. Plus, all my kids like
them, so it is something we can all agree on.”
– Bob Canter, professor of surgery at UC Davis
Division of Surgical Oncology
9. BLUEBERRIES
“Blueberries are excellent frozen because
they will cool down your oatmeal with bonus
fiber and antioxidants. They contain resveratrol,
like red wine without the alcohol, hangover
or extra calories.” – Alex Nella, pediatric
registered dietitian
10. MEDITERRANEAN DIET
“We know that physical fitness helps your mental health, so
in general, eat throughout the day and don’t miss meals or
depend on snacks too much. Ideally, eat a Mediterraneanstyle
diet with lean meat and lots of vegetables and make
sure you keep your weight within a healthy range.” – Peter
Yellowlees, professor of general psychiatry and chief wellness
officer at UC Davis Health
