Summertime Blues! 

I don’t know what it’s like in your part 

of the country, but here in the northeast 

we seemed to have gone directly from 

winter into summer with no real spring to 

speak of. With the temperatures heating up 

so quickly we started the summer season 

much sooner than we’d expected to. 

FOR those retailers and wholesalers who 

sell “fun-in-the-sun” merchandise they are 

in their glory to be able to kick off their sales 

season earlier than expected. For sellers of 

spring apparel and the like, not so much as 

we had a very brief spring weather season. 

WE expect that summer clothing and 

accessories will be a hot commodity this 

year. After a cold and wet season shoppers 

are looking for good shopping experiences 

and trendy new merchandise. Statistics are 

also showing that many shoppers are going 

back to brick-and-mortar stores, which is 

answered prayer for many of us retailers. 

RESORT and novelty stores in local 

tourist towns will do very well this year, 

with the price of airline tickets and gas 

higher than expected. Many vacationers 

will be “stay-cationers” and not venture far 

from home. Make sure that your stores are 

stocked properly to take advantage of the 

influx of locals and tourists. 

FOR those businesses who are not 

fueled by summer sales, this is THE time 

to work on your strategy for the upcoming 

holiday season. The summer will really fly 

by and smart retailers have already started 

their back-to-school programs just as 

their customers first toe goes into the 

ocean or pool.

IF your business is super slow during 

the summer you may want to consider 

bringing in some seasonal merchandise. 

There are furniture stores that add patio 

furniture and accessories for the simmer, 

Try to find merchandise that compliments 

your current offerings. Let’s be real, if you 

run a jewelry store you’re hard pressed to 

add pails and sand shovels to the mix! 

SOME retailers that do no business in the 

summer months often close for a period of 

time til their season restarts. We have a ski 

shop that has a big summer sale and then 

closes until September every year. They 

save on salaries and overhead as well as the 

depressing chore of 50-hours a week in a 

store with no shoppers or activity. 

JUST remember to focus on spending 

some time for your holiday sales planning. 

We do a big percentage of our annual 

sales and we should use our downtime to 

strategize for it. Summer is a great time 

to visit all of the trade shows to find new 

merchandise and suppliers. Next month, 

ASD Market Week in Vegas, a show we’ve 

been media sponsors since 1981, offers this 

great opportunity. And, we follow our own 

advice by promoting our magazines to all 

the show attendees during the summer. 

LAST and most importantly this month is 

to celebrate the freedom and liberty that we 

enjoy this Independence Day. Keep those 

who have fought for our freedom in your 

hearts and prayers as you enjoy all that we 

have been fortunate to have in our lives. 

And, in this election year – it means ALL of 

us no matter what side of the aisle!

Claire’s Celebrates 50 Years of Hello Kitty 

CLAIRE’S will mark the 50th anniversary of Hello Kitty with a “Hello Kitty, Hello World” yearlong 

effort. Launching on Wednesday, the project will span in-store activations, digital takeovers, exclusive 

collaborative product drops as well as a global campaign. 

THE campaign features oversize Hello Kitty x Claire’s products. Using CGI, the images show an 

earbuds case that has been given wheels and morphed into a car; bucket caps spilling out of 

a train car; and a necklace hanging off the side of an apartment building. The images and an 

accompanying video were brought to life by 3D artist Kirill Emelyanov. 

“2024 marks a milestone year for Hello Kitty, and 50th anniversary celebration includes offering 

her fans super-cute and limited-edition products. It wouldn’t be complete without a celebratory 

collection sold exclusively at Claires,” said Jill Koch, senior vice president of brand management 

and marketing at Sanrio. “Both Hello Kitty and Claire’s have inspired creativity and personal style for 

generations, and we are happy to be celebrating this incredible anniversary together.” 

FOR the initial launch, the company has included product such as a luggage tag, an embossed 

leather backpack, a water bottle, keychain, bucket hat and more. The range includes a pendant 

necklace featuring gold-colored sterling silver as well as lab-grown diamonds. 

AS the year progresses, the effort will include additional product drops at local Claire’s stores as 

well as on the retailer’s site. 

“FOR the past 50 years, Hello Kitty has been a globally recognized representation of friendship, 

kindness, and self-expression, the values that Claire’s has championed over the past six decades,” 

said Claudia Lima-Guinehut, Claire’s EVP and chief merchant officer. “As a longtime friend of Hello 

Kitty, we’re proud to honor the beloved character and share her message around the globe.” 

Zara Sales Show Growth Streak 

IF consumers are tightening their belts amid inflation and cost-of-living concerns, they are still 

buying them at Zara. 

THE high street brand’s parent company Inditex continued its growth streak, though the sales 

progression moderated in the three-month period to April 30. 

THE Spanish fast-fashion behemoth said sales in the fiscal first quarter of 2024 rose 10.6 percent 

at constant currency to 8.2 billion euros. 

THE growth rate is a tick down from last year’s 15 percent first-quarter growth and a full-year 

increase of 18 percent at constant currency, as the company benefited from a high street shopping 

boom. “Inditex’s sales comparables now become tougher, partly due to consistently strong trends 

last year,” he added. “We now expect trends gradually to normalize. 

THE continuation of double-digit sales growth demonstrates Inditex’s strength against rival H&M, 

where sales have been flat for several consecutive quarters. 

ZARA has stayed competitive in the Chinese market, where it launched live-streaming last 

November. The concept has been a hit there, and the company will now expand that to the U.K. 

and U.S. in the coming weeks.

with what you were going to say next, that

LISTENING WITH YOUR BODY 

When you are genuinely interested in 

what your prospect has to say, your facial 

expression and body language will convey it. 

How? Look directly at the prospect. 

You might lean slightly forward as you 

respond appropriately with phrases such as, 

“Really?” or “Then what happened?” Your

facial expression, whether one of interest, 

concern, or amusement, will indicate to 

your prospect you are following what he 

or she is telling you – and you cannot fake 

facial expressions. 

Keep in mind that your facial expressions 

and body language will give you away if you 

are not actively listening. (It might be worth 

your while to invest some time in books or 

the internet about body language and what 

different postures or mannerisms convey. 

You would learn, for example, not to listen to 

a prospect with your arms and legs crossed, 

which indicates, “I don’t believe you” or “I 

don’t want to hear this”. 

CLARIFYING WHAT YOU HEAR 

Active listeners ask questions to help 

clarify a fact or opinion the prospect has

People buy your product or service not 

because they understand it, but because 

they feel you understand them. Listening 

builds trust. It demonstrates your sensitivity 

and understanding, and it helps you gain the 

important information you need in order to 

meet your prospects’ needs.

a poor listener (and therefore a do-nothing 

salesperson) and a good listener / good

As the name implies, closed-ended 

questions bring the topic of conversation to

There is an important place for closedended

Instead, use the open-question. Openended
