The INs and OUTs
of the SSAC
BY RICHARD WARD
Another month has whizzed by, full of fun and
activities. In last month’s ECHO I announced that the
Board had decided that we have a dire need for a paid
Office Manager to be a constant at the front desk during
our open hours. It is with great pleasure that I can announce that as
of July 17 th Pam Demers was hired to fill that position. She will be a
familiar face to those who use the Centre as she worked regularly at
the front desk. As a volunteer she attended all the tutorials and web
instruction to learn how to use the new MySeniorCenter (MSC)
system and then took it upon herself to teach other volunteers.
She was elected to the SSAC Board at the recent AGM but to take
up the paid position, she had to resign. We were surprised and
delighted when she expressed interest in this position as Office
Manager. There could be no better candidate. She knows the MSC
system thoroughly, is highly organised and has a very pleasant
manner with both members and volunteers alike. Pam will be at the
front desk 9am to 3pm as a consistent voice to the membership and
minimising the stressful burden the MSC system had imposed on
our wonderful office volunteers.
1979
In the light of Pam’s move to the Office Manager position,
we now have two Board positions available, one being for
Maintenance Director and the other is the Director at large.
If you are interested in joining the Board let me know at
president@myssac.com, and I can give you some insight into
the requirements of the position.
Gill Smith has a redefined position as Manager of Operations
& Engagement. She will be continuing her great work with
activity and rentals coordination, and community outreach,
but will not be responsible for MSC or front office operations.
She works in the back office and will be posting drop-in and
appointment availability times five days per week between 11
am and 3 pm. Elsewhere in this edition you will find details of
our new office organisation and availability of services.
Sadly, I must report that we are losing an incredible volunteer
to the SSAC, as Chris O’Brennan leaves us and returns to live
in Squamish. Twice a Board member, Chris has been a tireless
worker for the Centre. She was a regular office worker, and in
addition, she was the major work horse facilitating our two
successful Flea Markets last year. We had planned to hold
a Flea Market in August, but now with the loss of Chris we
sadly are not able to take on that challenge. You may also be
aware of the embroidered and cut out greeting cards on sale
from the display in the main corridor. Chris makes all of these
and all the proceeds from sales she donates to the SSAC. To
date that donation is approaching $1,500. We will miss her but
are so pleased to see how happy she is to be surrounded by
friends, whilst living in a modern top floor condo with a view
of Garibaldi. We cannot thank her enough for her service. Our
loss is Squamish’s gain.
Recent heavy rains have shown one thing, we had some leaky
gutters needing repair. There needed to be some corner gutter
repairs plus all gutters were recaulked. In addition, on the
upper roof, extra flashing needed to be installed to ensure
that all water was directed to the gutters and not allowed to
continue getting behind the fascia. It was essential to get this
taken care of once identified, and at a cost of around $1,700,
is another example of the sizable ongoing maintenance costs
that we incur. There is need however, for some vigilance
concerning the state of the roof. We have a tin roof that
2
| July 2024
SEASHELL ECHO | SECHELT SENIORS ACTIVITY CENTRE NEWS
equires a protective coating to prevent it from rusting
away. There are large parts of our roof where the
protective coating has weathered away, with some
minor rust at the edges. We will be getting quotes
for the cleaning and recoating of the roof. This may
well cost in the order of $10,000 but is necessary to
avoid complete replacement of the roof in the not-toodistant
future.
With the changes in the office management and
vigilant monitoring of maintenance issues and stable
finances, we feel we are positioned well to continue to
offer the best quality and economical services of the
Centre to our members. As always, we want the SSAC
to be a welcoming place for you to come to. “Your
home away from home”.
Pickleball
3 rd Annual Serge Planidin
Memorial Dinking Tournament
On Saturday June 15 th we held the 3 rd Annual
Serge Planidin Dinking Tournament. Not
to be confused with a drinking tournament.
The Dink is a shot in Pickleball which
essentially is a soft drop shot usually played from close
to the net. A dinking game can be played by using only
the 7-foot region either side of the net, referred to as
the “Kitchen”. Our tournament involved a partial round
robin of 32 players on two courts.
Serge Planidin was a mainstay of Pickleball at the SSAC.
As an organiser and coach, he devoted many incredible
years to the Centre, always having time to teach anyone
who showed interest in the game. He was particularly
insistent that the game should be a soft game with
many dinks. Therefore, it is particularly appropriate
that we named the dinking tournament in honour of
his memory.
The 32 players were divided in to two groups playing
partial round-robin games on each of the two courts.
Each played 8 games with randomly selected and
different partners each game. At the end of 8 games the
two players with the highest scores from each court
played in a 4 player 2 game final to determine a champion.
Our champion was Glynn Lord, with co-finalists being
Steve Clifford, Aldo Tacchi and Bruce Fraser. Each will
receive a small, engraved glass trophy. The tournament
Tournament winner Glynn Lord (extreme left) with the finalists.
went off without a hitch and was organized and run by
Richard Ward, with the assistance of Gill Poulton and
Chris King serving as court marshals. Chris Hadaway
was again invaluable setting up the nets, tables and
chairs. The tournament was a lot of fun for players and
spectators alike, and four lucky players received a door
prize of pickleball passes. We will be holding a similar
tournament in early December. This will be called
the SSAC Picklemas Dinkathon, with pot luck food
contributions by the attendees to properly celebrate
the Picklemas festive season.
Book Signing
On Sunday June 23 rd , Eileen Connors and Dale Macdonald, introduced
their new books – Miracles Do Happen and Meant to Be.
These long-time Centre members and volunteers were joined by many
who enjoyed discussing the books and eating delicious cake. Eileen and
Dale have generously donated the proceeds from the sale of their books
to the Centre. Thank you so much! Watch for the announcement on
when the books will be available for sale.
Policies & Procedures
Communication
BY BERT CARSWELL
POLICY 8 - COMMUNICATION
The Centre requires an effective strategy of
communication procedures for the membership,
visitors, and the local community.
PROCEDURES
The Communications Committee will be responsible
for the following media:
1. The Communications Committee will update and
manage procedures surrounding Bulletin Board
usage within the Centre.
2. Community Board in the Entryway - all notices
will be read by the Manager to ensure the content
is not immoral or offensive and will be signed
and dated (with current date). Unsigned notices
will be removed and discarded. This Community
Board will have the following notice posted at the
top: “The SSAC does not endorse any product or
service promoted through this medium.”
3. Outside Sign, Lobby Monitor, Internal Bulletin
Boards other than Entryway are only used to
promote SSAC events and activities. These
may not be used by non-members, or by anyone
promoting ‘for-profit ‘ advertising or promotion.
4. The Bulletin Board and Pamphlet Rack near
and in the entryway are re-designated as the
“Community Resource Information B.B.”. The
Communications Committee is responsible for
monitoring the suitability of material.
5. All remaining Bulletin Boards will be consistently
labeled and identified as Centre Activities Only
and divided and labeled as to type of information.
6. The Echo Newsletter is published monthly, at the
beginning of the month. The Echo is coordinated
by the Manager, who will consult with the
Communication Director or a member of the
Executive if there are any questions. Proofreading
is the responsibility of the Communications
Committee. Notices in the Echo may be posted
by the Centre and by members. ‘For-profit ads’ by
members, and material from outside individuals/
groups are charged according to established rates.
resources for advertising and promotion. The
weekly sponsored CR (Coast Reporter) ad is the
responsibility of the Manager.
8. Email notices to be used only for notices of General
Membership, Annual General Membership and
Special Membership meetings, and for emergency
notices. This list will be maintained by the Board
Secretary or delegate.
9. Any additions, updates or deletions to the SSAC
Website content will be primarily maintained by
the Manager or delegate. In the event the Manger
is not available, the Technical Committee members
will be asked to maintain the Website. See Policy
16, Technical Committee, page 34
10. Outside Agency Surveys requesting a survey must:
a. provide credentials.
b. submit their survey to the Board for review and
approval prior to commencement.
11. Any use of the SSAC name and logo, must be
June 22 nd was this month’s dance with Blue
Western putting everyone in a dancing mood.
Many thanks to the band for a country-rockin’
good time! Also thank you to Colleen and
Krystyna who were on hand to lead the line dances.
(Don’t forget line dancing is offered 3+ days a week –
not only great exercise and fun but good for cognition
too!) There was also some two stepping, free style and
other dancing – all fun to watch even if dancing isn’t
your thing.
The line dance workshop was held on June 7 th – led by
Jay Alexov. There were some regular attendees but also
a few new people, including one young couple getting
ready for their upcoming wedding – congratulations to
them both!
July’s dance will be on the 20 th with the Creek Big
Band. Some of you will remember them from the New
Year’s dance. Get ready for some swing, Latin, light rock
and jazz music (be there or be square). Doors open at
6:30 pm with the beer wine and cider bar open.
Thanks to all the volunteers who help with the dances,
they couldn’t happen without you!
Bus Trips
The Truth
About Our Bus Trips
We are very fortunate to have a 21-seat
bus to use for trips. We now have a
bus committee with the mandate to
generate as many viable bus trips as
possible. The more trips we have the more likely we
are to meet the expenses required to keep the bus
running.
Unfortunately, there are considerable costs associated
with maintaining and insuring it. With any trip
comes the commensurate cost of fuel and the driver
honorarium. These costs are even higher when the
trip involves a ferry trip over to the mainland where
the cost of ferry fee, fuel and driver honorarium is over
$400. Therefore, at $40 per passenger we need at
least 10 people to simply break even on the trip costs.
However, this does not provide any income to
contribute to the yearly expense of maintaining the
bus. To make that happen we need at least 15 paid
passengers on bus ferry trips. That is why we have
had to cancel Casino trips when the ridership is too
low. You will note that for all our future trips we have
had to impose a minimum ridership of 15 to avoid any
cancellation.
On a safety and liability note, moving forward (excuse
the pun) you are required to sign a waiver the first
time you travel in the bus. Also, you must wear your
seatbelts at all times, and there must be no walking
around on the bus while it is in motion.
The bus committee has done a great job in putting
together the trips listed here. Tickets for the Tea &
Trumpets series of 6 performances on Thursday
afternoons at the Orpheum theatre Vancouver (October
2024 to June 2025) sold well. We have 15 members
who have paid for their series tickets and will pay the
bus fare as each performance approaches. There are 6
seats left available for each trip. If you obtain your own
tickets directly from the Orpheum, you are welcome to
pay for one of those bus seats and come along for the
ride, either for single performances or the series.
Please support the bus trips so that we can afford to
keep it on the road. If you have ideas for trips, feel free
to write them down and drop them off at the front
desk. The bus is also available for rental to non-profit
organisations. In July 2025 we will review and report on
the bus finances after a full year of trips organised by
the committee.
Appreciation Lunch
Celebrating our Volunteers
It is only because of the efforts of over 150
volunteers that the SSAC can run so well, or
even at all. That is why Friday, the 28 th June was
one of our most important days of the year. It
was the day of the Volunteer Appreciation Lunch.
They say there is no free lunch. Well, although the
attending volunteers had complimentary tickets for the
lunch, they indeed had already paid their way with all
their invaluable hours of volunteer work at the SSAC.
The lunch is one way that the SSAC board members
can show how much they appreciate the work of the
volunteers. President Richard Ward was the Master
of Ceremonies and made a toast to the volunteers
and then there was a special presentation to “Super
Volunteer” Chris O’Brennan as she leaves us to move to
Squamish.
Nearly 60 volunteers attended the lunch, where Chef
Emily and her crew outdid themselves and produced
an outstanding buffet. There were plenty of delicious
dishes to choose from. Two challenging word and
numerical games occupied the revellers whilst they
waited for their turn at the buffet. One challenge was
to make as many 4 or more letter English words out of
the word SUNSHINE. Each letter could only be used
once in any word.
Charlotte Wrinch entertained the crowd with her
beautiful music. For those volunteers who could not
make it to the lunch, thank you for everything you do
for us, and hopefully we will see you at this special
lunch next year.
