Courses for employers,

employees and those

looking to boost their

earning potential!

Why do we offer what we offer?

At Shipley College, we tailor our

adult qualification courses to meet

the specific skill requirements of

the Bradford region, and we do

this by being a key contributor to

the Local Skills Improvement Plan

(LSIP) for West Yorkshire.

To develop the skills plan,

we worked collaboratively

with the West & North Yorkshire

Chamber of Commerce, Bradford

University, Bradford Council,

the West Yorkshire Combined

Authority and hundreds of

micro, small and medium-sized

businesses across the Bradford

City Region. By listening to our

stakeholders and responding to

what they tell us, we are able to

align our education and training

offer with the precise needs of

Bradford’s business community.

Key regional sectors were identified,

in terms of growth potential and

skills needs - including Health &

Social Care, Digital & Technology

and Leadership & Management. Our

courses focus on enhancing existing

skills and launching future careers

in these sectors, and we provide the

flexibility to enable you to access

these essential skills.

With availability for classes to

be held on-campus, directly on

employer premises or hosted online

- and often at no cost - we can help

ensure a well-equipped future

workforce for Bradford.

Get in touch with Shipley

College today and join us in

shaping the future of our region.

Your business - is OUR business.

A talented workforce is key to

success, and we want to be your

first port of call when it comes

to developing your current staff.

We can help you train your

promising staff into your next

managers, upskill whole teams

or enhance your staff induction

programme with short courses

on everything from first aid

to cybersecurity, or food

hygiene to EDI.

This can be done via face-to-face

teaching or online. We have short

courses for skills and refreshers,

and longer-term vocational

training, all of which can be

tailored specifically to meet

your needs.

We offer sector specific training

such as Safeguarding and Childcare;

general business support such

as Leadership & Management,

Customer Service and Cyber

Security; and bespoke courses

that are designed with you to deliver

the strategic goals of your business.

Here at Shipley College we know

how important it is to work closely

with local businesses to support

our key sectors, and

specifically to develop

digital innovation in

Apprenticeships are a great way for

employers to address skills gaps in

their business and for apprentices

to earn while they learn.

An apprenticeship means

an employer can recruit new

staff and train them within their

organisation, usually for four days

a week, while the apprentice learns

the core skills required to work in

that sector as part of a one-day

-a-week qualification with

Shipley College.

The apprentice earns a salary

throughout, and Apprenticeships

are not just for school leavers

- because anyone over 16 can

take on a new adventure as

an apprentice!

Shipley College has over 30

years’ experience delivering

apprenticeships. We can

help both employee and

employer succeed.

We offer:

• Contacts with a variety of

companies across the

Bradford region

• A database of potential

apprentices to match with

the opportunity

• Knowledgeable, experienced

tutors

• Dedicated support

• Regular progress reviews

We offer apprenticeships in

Local Skills Improvement Plan

(LSIP) priority areas like Health,

Professional Services and Digital

Technologies - see the whole

list to the left, and contact

don’t meet the entry qualifications,

you can take the Access to Higher

Education Diploma and qualify for

university in just one year!

You will study 9.30am-4pm on

Mondays and Tuesdays, for a year.

We have an increasing demand

for health and care services in our

region, so we offer Access routes

into Health & Social Care careers

across the whole sector. Entry

requirements vary depending on

your chosen pathway and University.

Access to Health & Social Care

Health Professions Pathway:

Modules in Human Physiology, Psychology & Professional Health

Care Practice, to prepare you for university study for a wide range

of professions such as Nursing (Adult, Children or Mental Health),

Midwifery, Paramedic Science, Radiography and Occupational Therapy.

Social Sciences Pathway:

Modules in Social Issues in Health, Psychology and Professional Healthcare

Practice, to prepare you for university study in areas like Social Work,

Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Youth & Community Development,

Welfare, Counselling, Childhood & Youth Studies, and Primary Education.

Pre-Access evening course

If you don’t have the entry requirements to enrol onto the Access course

you might consider our pre-Access evening course which focuses on

addressing your skills in Health Science, English and maths. It may take a little

longer but this way you will be prepared with all the qualifications you need to

progress to Access, University and ultimately, into a job in the Health sector.

Free access courses!

Most people get an Advanced Learner Loan to pay for their Access

course, so you will not need to find the money up front. The even better

news is that if you do go on to University, and complete your University

course, then Student Finance England will ‘write off’ the money you

borrowed for your Access course, so you will not need to repay it!*

Teacher Training

Education is one of the five sectors that

employs the most Bradford residents and

we offer great opportunities for you to

qualify as a teacher.

Take your first steps into a

career in teaching with the

Award in Education & Training,

or progress onto a Cert Ed or

PGCE with our professional

qualifications, delivered in

association with the University

of Huddersfield.

There are routes available to

those who already have degree

qualifications, including PGCE,

and routes like Cert Ed open

to those who have vocational

experience and would like to

apply that experience to making

the move into becoming a teacher.

Our courses run on 12 Saturdays

across the year allowing you to

teach during the week and study

on the weekend. In two years

you will be a qualified teacher

in lifelong learning.

43.

CASE STUDY

Our PGCE & Cert Ed courses are a great

way to get into teaching and some of our

own staff have qualified through this route.

Steph, one of our Health and Social Care

lecturers, spoke to us about her experience

on the Cert Ed course and moving from

working in industry to teaching in College.

"Before working in FE I was the managing

director of a care company. I was MD for

4 years and manager for 5 years before

that. I had worked in Healthcare since I

left school. As managing director I had

various responsibilities including meetings

with directors of NHS trusts, working

on compliance, interviewing staff and

procurement.

After years of working in an environment

where I was hiring and managing healthcare

staff I wanted to move into a field where I

could help teach and mould the healthcare

staff of the future! I knew what was expected

and what the reality of working in healthcare

was so I knew I would be able to provide

valuable insights and real world experience

to the students.

Starting the Cert Ed course and teaching

was a culture shock, I'd gone from being in

charge to being told what to do! However,

the tutors were amazing and whilst it

can seem daunting to be going back into

education, it's definitely worth it and the

tutors and support I received made the

experience easier.

I finished my Cert Ed in June 2023 - it was

a great experience and I am really glad I

did it. I learnt a lot about myself and proved

that I could do things I didn't think I could.

I am now the course coordinator for T

Level Health and I really enjoy teaching.

I’d definitely recommend moving into

teaching and doing it through the PGCE

or Cert Ed course depending on your

previous qualifications."

Moving into teaching was a complete change

in career and direction. I applied to be a

student teacher at Shipley College despite

having no teaching qualifications because

it was a way for me to earn and learn on

the job, I would be able to gain my teaching

qualification whilst working at the college. I

didn't have a degree, only a Level 5 Diploma

in Leadership and Management in Adult Care

so I went through the Cert Ed route as you

only need a Level 3 qualification to start. It

was a great way to get into teaching without

going to university.

Other opportunities

for those on low income

or seeking work

If you are not working at the moment, or are on

a low income and are looking for your next role,

there are lots of free training opportunities to

help improve your chances of success.

SWAPs

Sector-based Work Academy

Programmes (SWAPs) are courses

for unemployed people which

are delivered in partnership

with employers who have real job

vacancies they are wanting to fill.

You will learn new skills, gain

qualifications and learn about

the work that the employer does.

At the end of the course, if you

have successfully completed the

training, you are guaranteed an

interview and have a real chance of

securing a job in your chosen field.

Students on SWAPs at Shipley

College have gone on to secure

roles with local businesses

including Marks & Spencer,

Bradford Metropolitan District

Council, GXO, Servo Rail &

Incommunities.

“I really enjoyed the training,

especially the parts on shrub

planting and choosing seedlings.

We also got machine training

on everything we will be using

– strimmers, hedge cutters

and blowers”

"The college helped me with my CV, which was a big plus to be honest.

It’s great to have been successful on the programme – Incommunities

is a large company and once you’ve worked for a season you have

a great chance when full-time vacancies come up.”

Gary, former SWAP student

59.

“I’ve done lots of other jobs in

things like retail and security, but

I prefer to be outdoors. I also liked

that you got a guaranteed interview

at the end of the course.”

"The best things about the job are working in a team and making a positive

difference to each place – the older generation especially appreciated

what we do. Also, the pay is good!”

James, former SWAP student

“I haven’t done anything like this

before – I have been doing it a

month now and it is going brilliant.

I’m really enjoying it, just being

outside, travelling to different

places every day."

"I found out about the opportunity through the Jobcentre and liked the

sound of it. The 5 weeks of training was fun, and the plan now is to be

taken back on after September.

Shipley College were brilliant – the whole thing is a big stepping stone!”

FUNDING

YOUR STUDIES

Many of the courses we offer

are fully or partially funded by

the government which means

they are either free to all, or

free to students who meet certain

criteria, depending on the course.

Contact us to find out

more about funding:

enrolments@shipley.ac.uk

01274 327327

Many students are eligible for a full

or partial fee reduction depending

on personal circumstances, such as

your current salary, postcode, what

previous qualifications you have, if

you currently claim certain benefits

or are unemployed.

You can find detailed information

about this by visiting the funding

page of our website, but if

you contact our friendly and

knowledgeable Enrolments team

we can check all of the details and

advise on what funding is available

towards the cost of your course.

To check what funding you

are eligible for we will ask for

information about you, and

may need to see evidence.

The Government’s Free

Courses For Jobs funding

means that more people

than ever can qualify for

free courses!

See page 56 for more information.

Childcare, travel and equipment

costs don’t need to be barriers to

learning. There is support available

through the Learner Support Fund

for eligible students aged 19 or

over. You may even be eligible for

help with the costs of course fees.

62.

Advanced Learner Loan

If you’re aged 19+ and studying an

approved course at Level 3, 4, 5 or

6, you can apply for an Advanced

Learner Loan.

Eligibility for the loan doesn’t

depend on your income and

there are no credit checks.

enrolments@shipley.ac.uk

01274 327327

You don’t start paying back your

loan until you have finished your

course and your income is over

£25,000 per year. Even then, you

only pay back the loan on any

earnings over £25,000 - so it’s an

affordable way to access education

as an adult.

If you take out a loan to cover the

costs of an Access to HE course,

and then progress to university,

then the loan does not need to be

repaid*

*Conditions apply and all funding

information is subject to change.

STUDENT

LIFE &

SALTAIRE

Glorious Saltaire

The college is located in the UNESCO

World Heritage site of Saltaire. It'

an extraordinary place where Sir

Titus Salt, a Victorian mill owner

and entrepreneur, built an Italianate

style village for his mill workers to

reside. Salt had a dream that his

village would provide vocational

education to its residents. Today,

we take pride in preserving some

of the historic buildings that were

part of that vision.

Our buildings are close to several

other popular tourist attractions

such as Salts Mill and Roberts Park

and just a short walk away from a

wide range of independent shops,

bars, and restaurants that Saltaire

is renowned for. You will have plenty

of options to meet up with your

friends before your class or

to unwind after it.

The Saltaire Collection

The Saltaire Collection

was initiated by the people of

Saltaire to tell the unique story

of the World Heritage Site and

is managed by the Charity, The

Saltaire World Heritage Education

Association on behalf of

Shipley College.

The Collection has a wealth

of information for researchers,

schools, adult learners and visitors

to the World Heritage site of

Saltaire. The time period covered

is from the origins of Saltaire in

the 1850s, with plans for building

the village, to the present, with

a strong focus on social history.

The Collection covers all aspects

of work and life in the village and

the surrounding area, and its

international connections, told

through a variety of documents,

maps, plans, oral histories,

images, and objects some

of which belonged to the

founding Salt family.

There are over 6000 items in

the collection, and the online

catalogue has been improved.

In April 2024, a new website was

launched to make the collection

more accessible.

If you want to see the collection

in person, you can make an

appointment by emailing

saltairestories@gmail.com

The intention is for the

collection to be relocated

to a publicly accessible

space in 2025.

Unleash your

creativity and

ambiance of our

historic buildings

in Saltaire.

Our selection of ‘do something

courses at Shipley College can

be journeys of self-care or of selfdiscovery.

Learn a new language,

take up an artistic discipline, join

a class that gets you active

- or all of the above!

Lots of our Lifestyle & Leisure

students will come back time

after time - to join ‘improvers’

courses, to choose something

new, or for the social aspects.

Unlike our qualification courses,

these courses do not qualify for any

funding so we need to charge fees,

but the costs for Lifestyle & Leisure

courses are kept as affordable as

possible, to be accessible to as

many people as possible.
