About<br />

My name is <strong>Lucas</strong> <strong>Wihlidal</strong>, I am a second year student in the <strong>Architectural</strong><br />

Technology program at George Brown College. Over the past year and a half I have<br />

been honing my design skills in several computer programs including: AutoCAD,<br />

Revit, and SketchUp. I have also been developing my skills in creative programs<br />

such as Adobe photoshop and InDesign to further enhance the visual appeal of my<br />

architectural drawings. While at George Brown I have been studying the Ontario<br />

Building Code and basic building engineering principles to help further inform my<br />

design decisions. This portfolio contains a portion of my selected works to date, if<br />

The Hillcrest Community<br />

School Art Studio


Objective<br />

When approaching the design of the Hillcrest Community<br />

School Art Studio my goal was to create a space that promotes<br />

the health and well-being of the community as a whole. By<br />

taking plenty of inspiration from the Diogene project by Renzo<br />

Piano, I knew I wanted to acheive a design that was simple in<br />

shape and effective with its intentions. The space should feel like<br />

it is perfectly serving the occupants’ needs, while also inviting<br />

them to explore the importance of eco-concious living practices.<br />

This aim was acheived by focusing intensely on sustainability<br />

throughout the entire design process. Environmentally friendly<br />

solutions for providing water and energy to the building were<br />

thoroughly explored before any design work took place. As the<br />

building developed I made a concious effort to always keep these<br />

solutions at the forefront, and considered them first and foremost<br />

when making design decisions. The end result is a building that<br />

is highly aware of its resposibility to the environment it exists<br />

within. By utilizing recycled materials, non-destructive energy<br />

and water systems, and building automation technology, the<br />

Hillcrest Community School Art Studio stands as a testament to<br />

the community, and a reminder of our resonsibility to respect our<br />

environment, to respect each other, and to respect ourselves.<br />

Objective<br />

For this project the objective was to<br />

produce a set of working construction drawings<br />

for a three storey townhouse. The concept<br />

and reference drawings for the townhouse were<br />

already provided, and my task was to model the<br />

building in Revit, and produce a set of working<br />

construction drawings for the building. This<br />

project provided an excellent opportunity for<br />

me to dive deeper into Revit and develop my<br />

skills. While working on this project I was able<br />

to practice some more advanced techniques in<br />

building information modeling such as designing<br />

walls by stacking material layers, and creating<br />

schedules corresponding to building elements.<br />

At the culmination of this project I found that I<br />

had dramatically developed my skills in Revit<br />

and I had gained a much deeper understanding of<br />

residential design principles.<br />

Massing & Shadow<br />

Objective<br />

The objective of this assignment was<br />

to create a simple massing study based on the<br />

mixed residential/commercial block surrounding<br />

the George Brown Casa Loma campus.<br />

This assignment provided an excellent<br />

opportunity for me to practice transfering and<br />

scaling files between AutoCAD and Revit. It also<br />

was a great way to get more experience using<br />

the massing tool in Revit to recreate the general<br />

outline of a common city block.<br />

In addition to massing, I also set the<br />

project location to Toronto, Ontario, and was<br />

able to develop a preliminary shadow study<br />

based on the trajectory of the sun at any given<br />

point during the day.<br />

One of the most useful parts of this assignment was learning how to use the sun path<br />

settings to be able to mimic the location of the sun at any given time. For example, I was able<br />

to model what the shadows in this particular city block would look like on a Spring afternoon<br />

in April, and compare them to a Fall morning in October (pictured above). This is an extremely<br />

useful tool to use for making design decisions such as where to place windows, or how to align a<br />

front entrance.<br />

Twirling Villa<br />

Objective<br />

The aim of this project was to design and<br />

develop a set of working construction drawings for<br />

a two storey residential home. After being assigned<br />

a particular lot and a list of client preferences, I<br />

worked with a partner to establish a spatial analysis<br />

diagram. From there we developed prliminary<br />

floor plans and elevations to present to the client for<br />

approval. Once approved, we performed a building<br />

code analysis as per Part 9 of the Ontario Building<br />

Code, and developed the designs into a full set of<br />

working construction drawings, including; construction<br />

notes, site plan, floor plans, elevations,<br />

cross-sections, and wall sections.<br />

Being the first large project where our group<br />

was tasked with designing all aspects of the building<br />

and developing construction drawings, this was<br />

a huge learning experience. I learned a ton about<br />

how to apply the OBC to ensure a design will be approved<br />

for permit. Also during this project I gained a<br />

ton of experience transferring files between Autocad<br />

and SketchUp.<br />

ACME Cosmetics Warehouse<br />

Objective<br />

The purpose of this project was to design and create a set of construction drawings for a steel frame<br />

warehouse in Vaughn, Ontario. The site, a list of client requirements, and a general outline of the warehouse were<br />

given, and my partner and I were tasked with designing the warehouse and to produce working drawings for it.<br />

We began the project by completing a site plan fasibility study, utilizing the city of Vaughn Bylaw to<br />

determine; lot coverage, setbacks, landscaping, and parking requirements. We then developed the drawings based<br />

on client feedback until we got the layout just right. Next we cross referenced our warehouse with the Ontario<br />

Building Code to ensure compliance and developed our layouts into a set of working construction drawings.<br />

Objective<br />

The following pages consist of several vignette<br />

drawings I comlpeted for a visual communication<br />

class. I thoroughly enjoyed working on these<br />

hand sketches and they provided excellent practice<br />

in perspective drawing and examining formwork.<br />

This assignment also helped me to realize the<br />

usefulness of drawing by hand as opposed to always<br />

utilizing computer programs. Through drawing these<br />

interior and exterior vignettes I felt that my understanding<br />

of spatial relationships was strengthened<br />

and I better developed my awareness of how edges<br />

and lines come together to create the architectural<br />

form of a building.<br />

The objective for this project was to desgin a car dealership located in Vaughn Ontario.<br />

There was a building with several drive through bays for car maintenance existing on the property,<br />

and our task as a group of two was to design a fresh dealership incorporating the existing<br />

bays. The two storey building included a variety of spaces, such as; a new car showroom, a<br />

used car showroom, an area for VR customer experienece, a part sales/storage area, a customer<br />

waiting area, various staff areas, and offices. This project provided a great opportunity to<br />

practice problem-solving design skills when laying out the required spaces within the space<br />

limitations.<br />

Objective<br />

For this project, the goal was to develop working construction drawings for a three storey mixed use building in Vaughn Ontario. After<br />

being given the site, a ground floor layout, and a list of clients for the commercial space, our task was to work as a group of four to produce a full<br />

set of working construction drawings. Since this was the first large building I had the opportunity to design, this project was extremely informative<br />

and eye opening. Through the process of working on this project I learned how to set up a project grid for a large bulding, how to interpret and<br />

apply Part 3 of the Ontario Building Code to a set of drawings, and how to design a large building containing both commercial and residential<br />

occupancies.<br />

In this section I have Included only the drawings completed by myself from the final drawing set.<br />
