Pupils putting innovation
and imagination on show
AN OVEN TRAY designed
for people with arthritis, an AI
application to help blind people
recognise when a bus approaches
their stop, and a longer lasting
ice cube are among the ingenious
creations to come out of a new
programme year 7 Selwyn House
students are undertaking this
year.
‘Ngā Huarahi Pūtaiao – The
Science Pathways’ was developed
by Selwyn House’s head of science
and mechatronics Simon Christie,
to provide an opportunity for
students to apply their creative
and innovative thinking to a
practical project in the science and
technology field.
“For many years, our school has
been participating in CREST, a
national awards scheme that had
previously been run by The Royal
Society Te Apārangi, however this
programme ceased to run a few
years ago,” said Selwyn House
principal Julie Calder.
“That opened up an
opportunity for us to purposedesign
our own science and
technology programme.”
The programme asks students
to identify a problem or an aim,
and then to take the science path,
te ara pūtaiao, or the technology
path, te ara hangarau, to solve or
achieve it.
“This is about our students
proving to themselves that they
possess the creative and critical
thinking skills to solve the world’s
problems,’’ Calder said.
Christie said purpose-designing
Ngā Huarahi Pūtaiao also
presented an opportunity to make
science and technology more
relevant to the New Zealand and
te ao Māori context.
“Students have been asked to
identify how their project relates
to any of four key concepts in
te ao Māori – rangatiratanga,
manākitanga, kaitiakitanga and
kotahitanga.
“This helps the students view
science and technology through
a more holistic lens, and to
recognise how they can harness
their skills to impact positively on
the world around them.
“Mentorship is another
important aspect of the
programme and the students are
encouraged to seek assistance
with their projects, either
within or outside of their school
community.
“We are fortunate to have
excellent connections with the
University of Canterbury that
we can call upon and we’re very
grateful to Dr Marie Squire
from the university’s chemistry
department who will judge the
final projects, along with some
female researchers who will spend
time speaking with the students
about their inquiries.”
Eight projects will be selected
to compete at the NIWA
Canterbury-Westland Science Fair
in September.
Wandering Larry’s celebrity status
• By Kate Paterson
ON THE Thursday before
Easter, Maria Kennedy, checkout
manager at Bishopdale New
World, noticed an unexpected
guest on the store’s doorstep.
A tabby cat was sitting right
outside, enjoying pats from
passing customers.
After a couple of hours, a
worried woman told Kennedy
she was taking the cat to the
vet, fearing he was either lost or
homeless.
The supermarket was closed
the following day, Good Friday,
but when Kennedy returned
on Easter Saturday, the cat was
back.
“He came back the next day,
which was the Saturday and
then he just started to appear all
the time,” Kennedy said.
Messages about the cat
streamed onto the Bishopdale
community Facebook page.
Members were eager to find
their new mate’s owner, if he had
one, and make sure he made it
home safely each day.
Worried about him walking
out in front of cars, a few
concerned community members
took him to a nearby vet clinic.
The mystery cat wound up
there seven times over the
next fortnight, becoming well
acquainted with clinic staff.
But the cat was not lost or
homeless. He had a very loving
home – and an owner who was
starting to get sick of collecting
him from the vet.
Three weeks after the cat’s
first appearance at New World,
he arrived wearing a collar
engraved with the name “Larry”,
and a phone number for the
owner.
“When I got into work, he had
a wee collar on. I rang the owner,
and he said Larry’s not homeless,
and doesn’t need people to take
him to the vet, he just comes
visiting,” Kennedy said.
The man who answered
Kennedy’s phone call was James
Cole, an engineer at Air New
Zealand, and the owner of the
wandering cat.
went and picked him up. And
then another day I got home
delivery from a veterinary
few streets down from the New
World, across Harewood Rd.
Cole hoped Larry’s collar
would put locals’ minds at
ease but it quickly led to
multiple phone calls a day
from concerned community
members.
“When someone rings, it will
come up with a number that I
don’t recognise. They’ll say, ‘I’m
so and so’, and I’ll break in the
conversation and say, ‘you’ve
Country Life is Now Calling
Having lived at 129 Mays Road since
1999, the owners have been drawn to
the country life and have found their
next home, which means you now have
the most amazing opportunity to secure
what is quite simply a stunning home
situated in a very popular suburb.
What does this property offer you and
why would you want to secure it? Firstly, it
is a post-earthquake built home. With the
previous home having been demolished,
the owners designed a home that they
would look to enjoy for many years
to come. Sited on 647sqm of land, it
enjoys the sun from early morning to
late afternoon. The configuration of the
interior is such that it will suit families of
all ages.
What more could you want? Except to
say that it is underpinned by excellent
educational options that cater from
Primary through to secondary school. The
neighbourhood is vibrant and so close to
cafes and other local amenities. This is
quite simply a classically designed and yet
a contemporary home that now must be
sold without delay.
Making Winter Work
It’s July, it’s over halfway through the
year and I, for one, am glad to be past the
shortest day.
It’s July, it’s over halfway through the
year and I, for one, am glad to be past the
shortest day.
Winter has its own set of challenges,
whether it’s starting at the office when it’s
still dark, which for me is 7:30am, to getting
home in the dark after 6pm and wondering
exactly where those hours in between have
gone.
Whilst many believe your productivity
is diminished at this time, it can be the
opposite if you utilize it as I do with some
winter rituals.
Not only do these simple steps keep that
feeling of a loss of motivation at bay, they
can also – at their most productive – provide
a strong sense of focus and happiness.
So, what’s involved in banishing those
winter blues?
The same pillars that provide the substance
and nurturance governing the other months
and seasons.
Movement is critical over winter, as much as
we all (and I put myself in this group) want to
go home, settle down to a Netflix marathon
and eat bowls of pasta. Without movement
it’s very easy to lose momentum.
I start every day – unless it’s raining so hard
I can’t bear it! – with a walk.
It’s always at an ungodly hour but those
two or three kilometres give me a chance
to think through what’s ahead of me and
completing this simple task provides a
sense of achievement that goes a long way
to mitigating some of the stress I encounter
once I start working.
If you prefer a more vigorous routine,
remember it’s all about consistency and
balance so don’t let the weather or the
season stop you from being your healthy
best.
Winter can also be a time to switch out
your usual activities to something different,
with common examples including yoga,
pilates or a dance class and personally
I’m intending to give each of these a go –
despite limited ability at two!
Hydration. With air-conditioning dominating
both work and personal environments,
it’s easy to become dehydrated, so whilst
drinking feels simple to remember in the
summer months, it becomes even more
important in winter.
Because I find it easy to forget this practice,
I try to get as much water on board as early
as I can and when I’m feeling particularly
motivated, I also take part in Dry July, along
with 61,000 other Kiwis.
At last count this simple practice has helped
raise $9 million for cancer sufferers and as
a winter practice it’s not only altruistic, it
is also extremely uplifting from a physical
wellbeing perspective.
I’m not going to discuss food choices
over the wintertime. I think we all know
what’s best but if ever there’s a time when
resistance goes out the window it would be
these next couple of months. So, good luck!
I’m in the ‘I love food’ camp, so let’s just say
it’s a work in progress.
Finally, dress for the weather. I’ve always
loved winter clothes. All the layers, coats,
scarves and hats.
Perfect for not only standing out from the
crowd but being warm enough to work hard
and think clearly, and if that isn’t enough
motivation then starting the day with a
cold shower – and I mean freezing cold! –
will certainly get you thinking about warm
clothing choices.
Well, it helps me at least and I’ve been doing
just that for the last 18 months.
Why do I try so hard in winter? Well, simply
put, there’s a lot of business to be done.
People choosing to sell or buy over
winter are usually deeply motivated,
not only because of their own intrinsic
circumstances but because there’s often a
lack of competition, creating the chance for
a premium.
And I’ve witnessed some significant
premiums in our auction rooms recently,
which I haven’t seen for some time.
That’s the beauty of any property cycle. You
never know exactly when it’s going to turn
and often you can have optimistic moments
just to keep you guessing.
So, enjoy the winter and get excited about
where it can go because if there’s one thing
I know for sure ‘momentum will always
provide a platform for success’.
TWO ST Albans Primary School
pupils have won first place in a
Lego-building competition.
The Build for Change competition
was created by Imagination
Station and the Christchurch
Brick Show.
Tasked with the challenge of
solving a community issue, pupils
used Lego to arrive at creative
solutions.
Jacob York, 10, and Noah Heise,
10, from St Albans primary took
first place with their ‘fun park’
vision for the red zone.
They are looking forward to
having their exhibit on display this
weekend at the Christchurch Brick
Show at Wolfbrook Arena.
“Our project is titled ‘Future
versus past battle’. It features two
ships, one from the future with
atomic weapons and zappers, and
an old pirate ship with a cannon
and a plank,” said Noah.
Jacob said the idea was to create
a playground for the red zone, inspired
by the pair’s collective love
of pirates and carnivals.
“It’s really fun, and for the most
part we built it using only our
imaginations,” he said.
The pair recently exhibited their
work at Tūranga Library, where
they won the people’s choice
award as well.
“I was just really surprised . . .
and happy,” said Jacob.
“We’ve both been using Lego for
as long as we can remember, probably
since we were four-years-old.”
Jacob and Noah belong to the
school’s Lego club, which now has
close to 60 pupils.
“We fundraised to buy the Lego
for the competition,” said supervising
teacher Sam Pelham.
“We wanted to enter multiple
teams in the Build for Change
competition. The school hosted
a colour run fundraiser, and our
PTA kindly donated $1000 of the
proceeds for Lego. It’s been really
amazing to see the students following
their passion.”
Noah said his favourite thing
about the pair’s build is “all the
different stories” contained within
it.
“The guy at the cannon we’ve
called Dynamite Joe . . . I really
like just being able to open up my
mind and build something new.”
Jacob agreed.
“We work really well together,
and we just brainstorm and build
as we go . . . we’re really happy
with the end result.”
The school is already eying
up its next project – Waitākiri
School’s ‘Brick by Brick’ show in
September.
RANGI RURU Girls’ School
welcomed their new principal
this week.
Tracy Herft joined the school
on Monday, taking over from Dr
Sandra Hastie who left at the end
of last year.
Originally from Melbourne,
Herft was deputy principal at
Strathcona Girls Grammar,
where she previously held
positions as acting principal,
head of mathematics and dean
of studies.
She is looking forward to
the transition from deputy to
principal.
“There is a mix of excitement
and determination in taking
on the role of principal,
and I am looking forward
to having a pivotal role in
shaping the experiences of
our Rangi Ruru students,” she
said.
Herft said she hasn’t spent
much time in Christchurch
yet, but has already noticed
similarities between the Garden
City and Melbourne.
“Arts, sport, food, and of
course, some of the weather.
“Christchurch has a real buzz
to it, and its surroundings are so
naturally beautiful. I am looking
forward to exploring more of the
region.”
As principal, Herft intends to
settle into the school community
shaped by the staff who came
before her.
“Rangi Ruru and the wider
school community are in very
good spirits. Dr Hastie, the
principals before her and all the
staff have done an amazing job
building a unique culture and
an environment where students
thrive. This is something I aim
to protect, but I am excited to
see what we can achieve in the
coming years as a school and
community.”
Herft will be the 11th principal
Tight tussle for final spot in playoffs
• By Sam Coughlan
TWO TEAMS have secured spots
in the Miles Toyota Premiership
semi-finals as the competition
breaks for the school holidays.
Frontrunners Nelson College
and defending champions
Christchurch Boys’ High will
finish in the top four, with a host
of teams lining up to join them
with two rounds to go.
Boys’ High coach Rhys
Archibald said he was happy to
have secured a semi-final spot.
“That’s what we were aiming
for. Hopefully we can win one of
our last two games and secure a
home semi, it’ll be a bit nicer.”
Following them are St Thomas,
who have a seven point buffer to
fifth-placed St Bede’s and look
set to join Nelson and Boys’ High
in the playoffs, needing one win
from their final two games.
Currently in fourth place is
Christ’s College – who are just
three points ahead of St Bede’s,
and the two teams will go headto-head
in the penultimate round
after the break.
Christ’s College head coach
Reuben Thorne said it would be a
huge game.
“They (St Bede’s) look to have
had a bit of a slow start, but they
look like they’re playing really well
at the moment.
“Our guys are well aware of the
situation. If we win, then we’ll stay
in the top four, if we lose, then it
Andrew’s College.
makes that next game afterwards
super vital. It sort of takes that
destiny out of our hands, so it’s a
big one for us.”
Thorne said his side would be
looking for more consistency at
the business end of the season.
“At times we’ve played some
really fantastic rugby. If anything
we want to find a way of being
more consistent, and particularly
finishing games off well.
“We’re in control now. We’re
not chasing or relying on other
results. If we can try and win
those games, then we’ll stay in
that top four.”
Marlborough Boys’ College
are level on points with St Bede’s,
although they have an inferior
points difference.
Shirley Boys’ High and St
Andrew’s are still in the fight,
sitting five and seven points
outside the playoffs as things
stand.
They will square off in the first
‘Aquathon’
swimmers
notch up
big distance
• By Isabella Adams
A SWIM club challenged
themselves to swim the length of
the South Island in a week.
The Aquagym swim club ran
their first ever “aquathon” to fundraise
for the club.
The goal was to swim the
length of the South Island, a total
of 840km, which they achieved
through weekly training sessions
and a wrap-up event at the end of
last month.
Club president Mike Walker
said the idea came from one of the
parents.
“What we wanted to do was raise
money at the club for supporting
our coaches, getting equipment for
the swimmers and things like that.
“One of our mums said, ‘well,
why don’t we swim the length of
the South Island? And we’ll count
it, we’ll do it over a week, and we’ll
count all our trainings together’.”
The club set a goal of $6000 and
fundraised through Givealittle.
They raised $7037.
Walker said they would run a
similar event in the future.
“The people who got behind it
that I saw and swam with seemed
to have a good time and really
enjoy it. I think we’ll definitely do
it again.”
Extra two years for landfill
OPERATIONS will continue
on part of the Burwood landfill
until 2026.
The 9.62 ha section of the
Burwood Resource Recovery
Park was expected to close when
its resource consent expired on
June 30.
But a two-year extension for
operations at site C has been
granted by Environment Canterbury.
Said city
council resource
recovery manager
Dr Alec
McNeil: “We had
anticipated we’d
need to close site
C by 2024 when
it was expected
to have reached
capacity, but soil
Alec McNeil
volumes delivered to the site have
been lower than predicted, so
there’s enough room for another
two years of operation.”
McNeil said there are no
other soil disposal sites in the
Christchurch area that could fill
the gap in the market.
“Continuing operations here
means we don’t need to travel
outside of Christchurch to other
disposal sites, which cuts costly
transport distances and provides
time for the industry to open
new landfill sites.”
The Burwood Resource
Recovery Park was established
by Transwaste Canterbury to
EXTENSION: Operations at Burwood landfill will continue for another two years after a
resource consent extension was granted.
process earthquake waste from
the city’s demolished buildings.
Since 2019, Burwood landfill
has been progressively closing,
with only site C remaining
open.
The small section of the landfill
is used to dispose of soils that
contain low levels of contaminants.
No hazardous material is
accepted.
“Continuing at site C until
it reaches capacity is the best
and most economical option,”
McNeil said.
“I want to assure local residents
that apart from the change
to the resource consent, all
operations will remain the same
and will not involve any new
excavations or an increase in size
– we’re adding material to the
existing site area.”
The city council will not be
seeking a further extension when
the consent expires in June 2026.
Once closed, the site will
be incorporated into the
neighbouring Bottle Lake Forest
Park.
Adding ginger for
warmth in winter
Ginger’s warming magic makes these ginger kisses in a lined muffin tray,
it a great edition over the winter simply because it’s easier and tidier than
months, writes Penelope Maguire piping on to oven trays and sandwiching
with butter cream, but you can do that too.
Topped with fluffy ginger buttercream and
glacé ginger, these pack a gingery punch.
Pear and ginger layer cake with
chocolate ganache
This is a beautiful
cake that is
reminiscent of
sticky ginger toffee
pudding (and is
equally good served
warm with vanilla
ice cream) but is
re-imagined as a
sophisticated layer
cake sandwiched
between rich dark
chocolate ganache.
Ingredients
340g butter
1½ cups firmly packed brown sugar
1½ cups golden syrup (540g)
3 ¾ cups flour (450g)
2 Tbsp ground ginger
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1½ tsp baking powder
1½ tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
1½ cups of milk (375ml)
3 eggs, lightly whisked
4 large ripe pears, sliced
Method
• Preheat oven to 180°C and grease and line
two deep 20cm cake tins.
• Melt butter, brown sugar and golden syrup
in a saucepan until smooth and combined.
• With a whisk, stir together flour, salt,
ginger and cinnamon then sift in the baking
powder and baking soda in a large bowl.
• Mix eggs and milk in a separate bowl.
Then very gently combine the eggs and milk
with the dry ingredients and butter/sugar
mixture in the large bowl, folding until
combined. It should be a reasonably wet
mixture.
• Pour batter into the cake tins and top with
sliced pear, then bake for 50-60 minutes
until a skewer comes out clean.
• Allow to cool in pan for 20 minutes before
turning out on to a cake rack and allowing
to cool completely before layering together
with the whipped chocolate ganache (see
below).
Whipped chocolate ganache
Ingredients
375g 70% dark chocolate, finely
chopped
1½ cups cream
Method
• Place the finely chopped dark chocolate in
a heatproof bowl.
• In a saucepan, heat the cream until it
barely comes to a simmer, but do not let it
boil.
• Pour the heated cream over the chopped
chocolate. Let it sit for about 2-3 minutes to
soften the chocolate.
• Gently stir the chocolate and cream
together until the chocolate is completely
melted and the mixture is smooth and
glossy.
• Allow the ganache to cool completely in
the fridge then whip in an electric mixer on
high till doubled in size before topping each
cake and sandwiching together.
Triple ginger and
cardamom kisses
Similar to the classic; however, I like to do
Ingredients
Makes 12 medium cupcakes
2 cups flour (240g)
¾ tsp baking soda
¾ tsp baking powder
3 Tbsp ground ginger
2 tsp ground cardamom
1 tsp ground cinnamon
115g butter, softened
¾ cup white sugar (150g)
4 Tbsp golden syrup
3 large eggs
½ cup milk
Ginger butter cream and
glacé ginger to serve
Instructions
• Preheat your oven to 180°C. Grease and
line a 12-cupcake tin with paper liners.
• In a large mixing bowl, cream together
the softened butter, sugar and golden syrup
until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a
time, beating after each addition.
• In a medium bowl, sift together the flour,
ground ginger, ground cardamom, ground
cinnamon, baking soda and baking powder.
Set aside.
• Gradually add the dry ingredients to the
butter mixture, add milk and mix until just
combined.
• Spoon the batter into the prepared muffin
tin, filling each cup about ⅔ full.
• Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20
minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into
the centre of the cake comes out clean.
• Allow the muffins to cool in the tin for a
few minutes before transferring them to a
wire rack to cool completely. Then pipe on
big dollops of the buttercream (see below)
and top with glacé ginger.
Ginger buttercream
butter on medium speed until smooth
and creamy and gradually add icing sugar,
beating on low, then medium speed until
well combined.
combined.
• Add cream or milk, one tablespoon at a
time, until desired consistency is reached.
They will recommend the most
energy-efficient and cost-effective system
Nowadays, customers are often
wanting whole home solutions to be
able to maintain even temperatures
throughout the home both in Winter
and Summer. This can be achieved by
using ducted systems or multi systems
and Enviro Master are experts in
designing, installing and commissioning
these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy offering 80 per cent
of the cost of a new heat pump up to
$3000 including GST.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer
Kiwi Homes initiative and is available
to Home owner/occupiers with a
Community Services Card, a SuperGold
combo card or who live in a low-income
area as determined by deciles 8-10 on
MG4 X-Power potent but lacking polish
THE X-POWER is the wild child
hot EV hatch in the MG4 range
that has a bit of larrikin thrown
into the mix, adding intrigue
and excitement to its multidimensional
personality.
The adrenalin charged,
X-Power is easily the fastest and
most potent production MG ever.
It is capable of knocking out the
0-100km/h dash in a vivid 3.8
seconds, boasting dual-motor
power of 320kW and 600Nm of
torque all for $69,990.
It’s a performance car steal even
in a post Clean Car Discount
world. Nine months ago it would
have attracted a healthy $7015
rebate, meaning you could have
driven away in this barnstormer
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
for an absurdly cheap $62,975.
Specification enhancements
include orange brake calipers, a
two-tone black roof, 18-inch alloy
wheels and polished trim accents,
and an exclusive attention
grabbing new Hunter Green
colour option that the test vehicle
sported.
Not only is this compact fivedoor
hatch quick, it’s also a fast
charger capable of recharging at
up to 140kW, in a charge time of
only 26 minutes from 10-80 per
cent using a 150kW DC rapid
charger.
The X-Power is equipped
with an all-new dual motor
configuration delivering up to
320 action packed kilowatts of
Ratings out of 10: Performance 9; Handling 7; Build Quality
7; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 7; Styling 7; Value
for money 9; Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 8
peak performance to all four
wheels, via front (150kW) and
rear (170kW) electric motors.
Its accelerative powers are
remarkable with throttle
response both breathtaking and
instant.
Tyre rumble, especially on
coarse road surfaces, becomes
especially niggly on longer trips.
Apart from this irritation, it’s
smooth and silent around town,
ticking even more boxes for an
already appealing vehicle.
The claimed 450km plus allelectric
driving range shrinks
rapidly if you binge on the
X-Power’s addictive performance.
A modern and thoughtfully
designed cabin is well
put together but given its
performance hero status in the
MG family, the interior doesn’t
have the expected X-factor.
On the outside, the generic EV
styling looks far too much like its
mainstream siblings. A bit more
X-factor wouldn’t go amiss here
either.
The X-Power has almost every
technology base is covered.
I especially liked the clever
dual-screen technology with
configurable driver display,
featuring a floating infotainment
screen, and an audio system with
Apple Car Play and Android
Auto.
A rotary dial gear selector is
intuitive and easy to use, while
getting to where you want to
go is made easy with satellite
navigation.
The MG Pilot system makes
a compelling safety statement
off the back of a comprehensive
package of standard safety kit.
The test car felt super solid,
agile and stable on the road and
body roll is superbly contained
under brisk cornering.
Direct and well-weighted
steering with just the right
balance of road feel, rounds
things out nicely. However, as
an overall ride and handling
package it falls short of the best
hyper hot hatches, although you
have to cut the X-Power a little
slack as most of are priced well
north of this one.
Even making those allowances,
more finessing is required to take
some of the edge off the hard
low-speed ride. Another work-on
is dialling back the suspension
noise that’s fairly strident over
more demanding patchwork and
potholed road surfaces that ask
the hard questions of a vehicle’s
suspension.
