Speaking to ctrlfc.com,
Milnes explains how pleased
he is with the performances
he’s been putting on and how
happy he is at Wheldon Road.
“I’m loving it, I came here
with the idea of playing more
regular rugby and I’ve been
able to do that with a good
bunch of lads and the results
are coming now so it’s a good
feeling.”
“I’m really pleased, and that’s
one of the main reasons why
I came here, and I wanted to
respect myself as a regular
player. Obviously coming to
a new club, you have to earn
your stripes and the respect
of your peers and hopefully
I’m doing that now with my
performances and hopefully
they’ll start to bring results.”
After some tough results,
Milnes believes that the
place is now positive, and
the group is gelling well. It’s
a young squad, but that’s
not stopping the team from
putting in the hard work and
effort.
“The feeling amongst the
playing group. We’ve got a
young group with a fair bit
of inexperience and not as
many older heads as there
probably has been, so it
just takes a bit of time with
new players coming in and
learning what each other
wants us to do. So hopefully
the fans are starting to see
that, but hopefully we keep
improving every week.”
“I’d like to think theirs a lot
more to come from me, it
just takes time. I’ve been a
bit of a part player in the last
few years of my career and
when you start playing every
week like I am now you start
to get into a bit of a rhythm
of things and I’d like to think
I’m getting better and better
now until the end of the
season.”
Rowan travels in with good
friend Alex Mellor, but
believes that the group as
whole is one, and there are
no sub-groups, something
that can only bring the team
together further.
“It’s good, there are no clicks
we’re all just one group and
Mellor is a good lad, we travel
in together and he’s quality
so I’m enjoying that and
enjoying spending time with
all the other lads and sharing
the field with them.”
IT’S JUST
ANOTHER
GAME BUT
OBVIOUSLY
IT’S
IMPORTANT
GAME WITH
TWO POINTS
UP FOR
GRABS.
There are some huge games
coming up, and the Fords
number 16 believes that now
is the time to kick on and
show Super League what
they can do.
“It starts with London Friday;
it’s a massive game and it
was a massive game last
time out. If we don’t turn up
on Friday, then last week’s
result means nothing. It’s just
another game but obviously
it’s important game with
two points up for grabs. I’ve
enjoyed playing in front of
the Cas fans and hopefully
we can pack out The Jungle
against Catalan.”
COACH’S COMMENTS
CRAIG LINGARD
It’s very good, we’d spoke
before the game about
being in positions to win
games previously, or not
knowing how to get over the
line in close games and we
spoke at half time that we
thought the last 2/3 weeks
of game time and prep had
led us to this situation now,
where we’d learnt how to
win close games and we did
this week which was really
pleasing not only just any
game but over at St Helens
too.
It’s a very difficult place to
go and not many teams go
over and get the two points
so for us to go over and get
the two points like we did is
very pleasing.
We’re just focusing on
London, we’re not looking
too far ahead or too far
forward as we said in the
changing rooms, theirs
no point going over to
St Helens and beating
Saints then getting beat
by London. No disrespect
to London but we need to
be going down there and
beating them and that’s
what we’re fully focused on.
We’ll address where we fully
are after the London game
but if we can get two wins
back to back it takes us into
the Catalan game at home
where hopefully we can get
a lot of people down here
and pack the Jungle out
and get three on the bounce
for the fans.
Hi Cas fans,
First of all I’d like to thank
you for your continued
support. It really means
everything to the lads and
it keeps us in those tight
games that we’ve had
recently. Although we just
came up short agains Wigan
and KR, the positive signs
are there, and we continue to
thrive off that.
The win at Saints was hard
fought, and it shows what
this group can do and how
close knit we can be and we
need to kick on and back
that up now.
We can’t wait to see you at
The Jungle for the final four
games at home.
All the best,
A LETTER TO THE FANS FROM
MARTIN JEPSON
Dear Cas Fans,
I am writing to you personally to thank you
for your dedication and continued support of
Castleford Tigers in the 2024 season so far.
The first team are working hard under Craig
Lingard’s leadership to generate positive
performances each week, with recent
gripping games and close results against
two of the top sides in Super League, giving
them much-needed confidence to progress
into the second half of the season. With the
squad strengthened by our newest recruits
including Tex Hoy and Matty English along
with our young signings too, the on-field
performances are set to continue in a
positive direction. It was really great to see
Sam Wood receiving his first England callup
in the win over France. He gave a really
good account of himself and for that we
congratulate Sam on his hard work paying
off.
As we are now halfway through the season,
the board and I would like to provide an
update to fans on how we are progressing
towards increasing our IMG scores and the
essential part that you all continue to play
in this.
Our stadium developments are well underway,
with the Princess Street seats now in place,
extra corporate seats and upcoming plans to
improve the director’s seats and walkway.
Our broadcast parking area is now complete
and the remaining works to the media suite,
TV Studio and press area will be completed in
the next 2 months, well ahead of the grading.
THE LAST RUN IN…
We need to continue to pack The Jungle
at each of our last 4 games this season in
a final push towards gaining the highest
attendance figures possible and to create an
electrifying and intimidating environment to
motivate our players. We need your support
and here’s how you can help:
• If you’re planning on attending these games
then get your tickets early to help us plan
and give us a good idea of the support we
can expect.
• Take advantage of our ticket offers:
We now have our new big screen in place
and are in the final stages of costing up LED
systems for 3 sides of the pitch.
With all of the above being completed, we
are on track and confident that we should
receive maximum stadium points.
Our commitment to you as fans is clear and
we are doing everything within our control
to gain the IMG points needed to maintain
Super League status.
The points that we cannot directly control are
those related to the game day attendance
and these are points that could make a big
difference to the overall score – we are doing
everything within our power to drive more
support to The Jungle every game – whether
this is special offers, family fun and activities
or multi-ticket deals – we want to make it
as easy as possible for new and loyal fans to
see a game this season and help us pack The
Jungle.
I would also like to take this opportunity to
acknowledge our season ticket holders for
your loyal support of the club this season and
give a heartfelt thanks for your continued
attendance at the games and understanding
whilst we put on special offers to get new
fans into the stadium.
4 game membership - £80 for all 4
remaining home games (Concessions £52)
Kids for £1 – Catalan Dragons Sunday 21st
July – Join us for a Double Header Family
Fun Day and celebration of our Armed Forces
with lots of activities and games ahead
of the game as well as our women’s team
• Bring your friends, family and introduce
new fans to the sport to enjoy some great
summer rugby.
• Share our social media posts and messages
to help us reach more fans and gain more
people attending the games.
We are one team and without your support
over many years, the Castleford Tigers would
not be the committed community club it is
today, so we thank you in advance for all your
help in our final push as we head into the last
4 home games.
We look forward to seeing you all at The
TIGERS COME CLOSE
AT THE JUNGLE
A close encounter between
Castleford and Wigan saw
The Champions come away
with the two points after a
scrappy affair.
Wigan were the ones to get
us underway at The Jungle
with a Harry Smith high kick, it
weren’t long into the first half
when Cas made the first break,
Innes Senior was clear down
the line until he was caught by
Eckersley.
Cas thought they had a chance
early on after a Warriors error
however a poor scrum play on
the first saw The Tigers lose
possession.
The Fords had a positive start
and were miles on top in the
early stages, but poor execution
kept the scores level.
This came back to haunt Cas
moments later when Liam
Marshall walked in for his first
of the day.
Liam Marshall thought he’d got
over for his second, but quality
Cas defence forced the winger
to knock on over the line.
Cas hit back with 7 minutes to
play through Tex Hoy, a burst of
pace through the line saw the
fullback go 1 on 1 with Bevan
French, however the Tigers man
skipped round him with ease.
With 3 minutes to play Kruise
Leeming left the field with for
a HIA, several complaints from
the Wigan side however nothing
was given by referee Ben Thaler.
It was all square at the break
with Cas being the happier of
the two sides going into the
changing rooms.
Cas thought they’d struck first
in the second half when Elie El-
Zakhem came close to grounding
a Corey Hall kick in behind
however Video Referee Chris
Kendall gave no try.
Elie El- Zakhem came close
once again on the last, this time
Ben Thaler awarded Cas the
penalty for offside. Craig Lingard
instructed Rowan Milnes to take
the two points and he converted
to put The Tigers ahead.
Cain Robb left the field for 10
minutes after being sin binned for
a high shot.
Rowan Milnes was pinpoint with
his kicking once again as a
penalty for a high shot saw Cas
take the two and go four points
ahead.
Wigan struck back straight away
when Bevan French broke the line.
Jake Wardle then skipped over
finding Liam Marshall who dotted
down in the corner.
Wigan went ahead with 15
minutes to play after a late hit
on Harry Smith allowed Wigan to
take the extras from the middle of
the field.
The Warriors were the inside on
the front foot with 10 minutes
to play piling on the pressure
however strong Cas defence kept
them out until the end.
A much-improved performance
for our Tigers who unfortunately
just came up short to the recent
Challenge Cup winners Wigan
Warriors in a tasty affair at The
Mend A Hose Jungle.
TIGERS PIPPED
AT THE LAST
The Tigers lose out to The
Robins after a Jez Litten drop
goal late on.
The visitors got us underway
at The Jungle, a high boot was
collected by Innes Senior and
Cas were ready to get started.
Rowan Milnes’ defensive effort
within minutes put Cas in good
field position forcing the error
from Ryan Hall.
Jason Qareqare thought he
was close to opening the game
but referee Aaron Moore gave
obstruction and a penalty was
awarded to The Robins.
Cas hit the front after 13
minutes through former KR man,
Sam Wood. The centre leaped
high and caught Milnes’ kick
before dotting down.
Some Mikey Lewis magic
allowed Hull to hit back as the
England international broke
through and found Tom Opacic
on the inside.
Minutes later Elliot Minchella
put The Robins in front as Jez
Litten broke the Tigers defence
and found Minchella on the
inside.
Sylvester Namo came off the
bench and made an instant
impact with a crunching tackle,
the PNG man then came within
inches of scoring before losing
the ball from an offload.
Peta Hiku went over for Hull
KR from a great play from Niall
Evalds however, obstruction was
given, and Cas were let off the
hook keeping them within six
points.
It was a tight first half between
the two sides after the opening
40 minutes. Hull KR were in
the lead 6-12 after a quality
contest.
It was a forceful start to the
first half for Craig Lingard’s men
as Cas’ strong defence forced
the error from Tanginoa.
This led to Sylvester Namo
crashing over for what he
thought was his first Castleford
try since signing in 2024.
www.castlefordtigers.com July 2024 21
Unfortunately, his effort was
knocked on over the line as a stray
leg stopped him in his tracks.
Matty English was hit high in an
incident similar to Cain Robb’s
yellow card against Wigan
Warriors however nothing was
given.
The Fords were then penalised for
a high shot moments later and
Mikey Lewis took the two points
to go eight points ahead with half
an hour to play but Lewis was
unsuccessful as his conversion
went wide.
Peta Hiku’s effort in the second
half was sent up the video referee
as no try after being held up by
Alex Mellor, a close call for Cas
but they once again held out The
Robins.
It was another former KR man who
crossed over to put the scores
level, Rowan Milnes received a Joe
Westerman pass that allowed him
to throw a dummy and brush off
Mikey Lewis in the process.
Cas were gifted an opportunity 35
metres out when Mikey Lewis’ kick
attempt was deemed as a knock
on. Unfortunately, a loose pass
from Westerman squandered the
chance for Cas.
Jez Litten put The Robins in front
with 5 minutes to play through a
drop goal 10 metres out.
Cain Robb gave Cas a glimmer of
hope after forcing the error with
2 minutes to play but a Sylvester
Namo error from the play of the
ball blew another Tigers chance.
A huge effort from our Tigers
against Hull KR but The Robins run
away with the spoils after a late
Jez Litten drop goal. A spirited
performance but unfortunately
not enough to get over the line.
FANTASTIC FORDS
WIN ON THE ROAD
It was the Tigers who looked
the stronger outfit after ten
minutes after having the
majority of the ball, a last
tackle shift out the back to
Tex Hoy nearly put Cas in the
lead but his pass to Qareqare
was loose and went into
touch.
Saints had back-to-back sets
near the Tigers line five minutes
later, but a poor kick and a
forward pass allowed Cas to
stay level after fifteen minutes
played.
Possession started to lean
towards the home side after
multiple repeat sets after
quality kicks. Saints couldn’t
take advantage as a last tackle
kick fell into the hands of Alex
Mellor in the left centre.
After such a strong defensive
display from Cas, St Helens
crossed over after through
Sam Royle. The Saints second
row managed to squeeze past
Jacob Miller with 2 minutes to
play in the first half to put St
Helens four points ahead at
the half.
Both sides were in the game at
half time, a four-point gap was
the difference between both
sides in what was a ferocious
first forty minutes of rugby
league.
St Helens broke through the
line early on in the second half,
forward Agnatious Paasi was
the man to go up against the
fullback but the pass to Lewis
Dodd was spilled before the line.
Referee Tom Grant gave St
Helens a penalty for a ball steal
after ten minutes in the second
half, Mark Percival was the man
to step up and slot the penalty
to take the hosts to six points
ahead.
Cas got themselves off the
mark when Innes Senior
dotted down in the corner, a
wraparound play from Robb
allowed Miller to find Senior on
the edge to put Cas within two
of the hosts.
Rowan Milnes sent the ball high
towards Tee Ritson on the last
who dropped the spiral bomb. Cas
looked to take advantage of the
field position but a forward pass
from a repeat set gifted Saints
the ball back.
Tee Ritson made a half break
down the left with fourteen to play
but a cover tackle from Qareqare
forced a poor pass inside to Dodd
who dropped the ball ten metres
out.
Two consecutive penalties allowed
Cas to then march up the field,
Craig Lingard was quick to get the
message on and Cas took the two
points to level the scores with just
over ten minutes left.
A Jacob Miller high kick came
on the last tackle from the next
set, Jack Welsby was underneath
the kick but unable to take it. An
accidental offside then allowed
Rowan Milnes to take the two
points to put Cas two points
ahead.
Saints were piling on the pressure
in the final moments but an error
from Paasi allowed Cas to scrum
down.
An end-to-end game but it was
Cas who took the spoils at the
Totally Wicked Stadium, a spirited
Cas performance who really dug
in until the end.
an experience that Nick was
pleased to be there for.
It’s great to be asked to be
the doctor, obviously, I hope
that I don’t have much work
to do as I hope all the players
are fit and healthy but it’s
really good to get involved
to see how things work at
that international level and
getting to see all the best
Performance Analyst with
England Women and explains
how the performance was
more important than the
result, but was pleased to get
the win.
“My involvement is prepping
the team in what to expect
and giving them parameters
to work within as well as
goals to hit during the game.
So, we do a lot of work on
our stats and different
instances within the game
and where we want to end
up. We tend to look at the
overall performance instead
of the result. It was a good
trip, I was able to be with
some good people and pick
their brains and getting a win
always tops it off nicely. We
work as a diverse team with
a lot of people from different
clubs so we do different
things across the sport so it’s
always good to sit and talk
rugby with them and see if I
can get a different viewpoint
on things.”
Elsewhere, there was a win
for the England Community
Lions! Castleford Tigers
Scholarship Head coach,
Richard Garbett. He spoke
of his pride in representing
England, and how pleased
he is to see the lads set up a
showdown with Wales.
“It was really good, obviously
a different environment with
the under 16 Community
Lions, but it was brilliant
and a real good experience
as well as a good day for all
the players and even better
that we got the win against
Ireland, and it sets us up
well for Wales in 3 weeks.
It’s brilliant and I love going
into the representative
environment with England
and it’s great to come back
to scholarship and share
things alike and benefit
both programmes moving
forward.”
Into the Academy picture
“It’s been a great few days
been aiming towards for a
long time. You have a pretty
good idea of how things
will run and had a chance
to speak to Rob and a few
friends who’d been there
before but it was still a bit
surreal on that first morning.
I settled in quickly; it was a
great staff team and a group
of lads to work with.”
“From a medical point of view
with everyone coming into
camp fit, you’re more there
in an emergency care role
and new injury triage role, so
I spent a fair amount of time
gaining further insight into
the pathways programme
from Paul Anderson and the
wider support team. Overall it
was a great first experience
in the environment and
hopefully be back again with
more players and staff from
the club.”
Rob Nickolay reflected on
his time away with England
Academy, an environment
that he is already familiar
with, but also paid homage
to the other members of
staff at the club, who were
also called up on for national
team duties.
“First and foremost, it was
an honour to be asked to
represent my country and be
involved in that programme.
As you’d imagine, going
into that international
programme it would be a
step up and the learnings
we get from there are what
we try to bring back and
implement at Cas Tigers.
It was fantastic barring
the result against a strong
French side.”
“It’s special, you get to
work with different players
from different clubs and
it changes slightly every
time and I get to take
some learnings from it, so
it’s a massive honour and
something I don’t take for
granted. It was great to see a
friendly face in camp in Karl,
in and around the place.”
“The amount of staff we
have working in and around
the England setups shows
the calibre of people that
we’ve got here at Cas and
what’s building for the club
behind the scenes moving
forward. So, it’s a lot of
recognition for all their hard
work and they thoroughly
deserve it.”
The Dacia Duster from just £10,995*
Rugged, robust and better-looking
Ok, car-cliché, what have we got this time?
Freedom and a 4x4, obviously – taking you off into the
horizon with not a care in the world, just a latte in the
cup-holder, air-conditioning through your hair. And yes,
the Duster is a fully functioning, hard-working 4x4.
And a beautifully made, well-equipped SUV.
So do feel free to throw the buggy in the boot with
the surfboard, if you wish. (Insert clichéd car-model
family here).
But, with the Duster, you get a different, much more real
kind of freedom. Because, from just £10,995 * , buying
the Duster leaves you considerably freer to find
something else to spend your hard-earned money on.
Like a sunset you can’t actually get to by car, perhaps.
Liberating, isn’t it?
