How to manage competing financial priorities
StatePoint
Managing competing financial
priorities can be emotionally and
logistically complex, whether
you’re juggling college tuition bills
and mortgage payments, or you’re
carving out opportunities for travel
while planning for retirement.
According to CERTIFIED
FINANCIAL PLANNER
professionals, following these tips
can help you effectively make space
in your budget for everything that
matters to you:
Get started early: While there is
no wrong time to make a financial
plan, waiting until you achieve
a certain level of wealth can be
counterproductive. Having a plan
at the outset will help you achieve
your goals faster and with less
anxiety.
Set specific goals: Being precise
about your goals can help ensure
you’re prepared to achieve them.
For example, simply saving for
retirement is terrific, but having a
clear vision of what you want your
retirement to look like can help you
map out a financial plan that gets
you exactly where you want to go.
Be strategic about debt: If getting
out of debt is one of your financial
goals, be strategic about it. Pay
off credit card bills and loans with
higher interest rates first to reduce
the overall cost of your debt over
time and free up more of your
money for your other priorities.
Maximize savings: If you can
only afford small contributions to
your savings right now because
of other financial priorities, don’t
fret. You can actually maximize
every dollar that you budget for the
future if you play your cards right.
A CFP® professional can guide you
toward savings opportunities that
come with tax advantages, as well
as high returns and interest yields.
Protect your wealth: Unexpected
circumstances can disrupt even the
best-laid plans. Account for such
possibilities as market downturns,
loss of income and the need for
long-term care to reduce the risk of
your important goals going unmet.
Stay calm: Money is the source
of many emotions, including guilt
and anxiety, and it is easy to get
swept up in those negative feelings
when you unmindfully spend money
on vacations, dining out and other
lifestyle experiences. Creating a
budget can help you realistically
balance fun, short-term goals with
long-term financial security.
Partner with a professional: A
CFP® professional can help you
juggle competing financial priorities
gracefully. Not only will they sit
down with you to identify your
objectives, but they also possess
the expertise to guide you to the
tools and strategies that will help
you most easily reach your goals. A
CFP® professional is also someone
you can trust. As part of their CFP®
certification, they commit to act as
a fiduciary and provide financial
advice that is in their clients’
best interests. To find a CFP®
professional, visit letsmakeaplan.
From buying a house or car to
financing your child’s education
or wedding, smart strategies can
help you meet life’s many exciting
adventures with confidence.

Why a healthier mouth equals a healthier you
StatePoint
Better oral health is strongly
linked to better overall health,
helping you speak properly, eat
healthfully, and prevent certain
infections and disease. According to
experts, it all starts with preserving
your natural teeth.
“Your natural teeth are not
disposable. They are designed to
last a lifetime,” says Dr. Natasha M.
Flake, president of the American
Association of Endodontists (AAE).
“Taking steps to preserve your teeth
is fundamental to a healthy mouth, a
healthy body and a happy life.”
Unfortunately, millions of U.S.
adults don’t have dental insurance,
and many low-income adults
lack the means to acquire dental
services. As a result, they may forgo
preventive care and even emergency
care when issues arise.
“Delaying or avoiding care can
cause a snowball effect of additional
oral health and systemic health
issues,” says Dr. Flake. “Even a
minor oral infection can escalate
into a life-threatening situation if
left untreated.”
In an effort to urge Americans
to get timely oral health care, the
AAE has launched a multipronged
campaign highlighting the link
between oral health and overall
health. The campaign includes
digital billboards in Times Square,
advocacy messages in building
lights, and pop-up educational
events where free dental care kits
are distributed.
Many AAE members even
provide free root canal treatments to
those in need through organized free
root canal days. Flake points out
how critical this service is.
“All too often, the default
treatment for infection and tooth
decay is tooth extraction,” says Dr.
Flake. “The truth is that we can do
better for all patients, particularly
those in underserved communities.
In fact, outreach efforts funded by
the Foundation for Endodontics help
patients in underserved communities
receive much-needed dental care
and save their teeth.”
Endodontists are highly skilled
dental specialists in diagnosing
and treating tooth pain. When
performing root canals, they use the
latest in 3D imaging and advanced
technology to put safety first and
reduce the risk of infection. With
25 million procedures performed
every year, root canal treatments
are safe, convenient and widely
recommended. To locate a nearby
endodontist, visit the AAE’s useful
patient tool findmyendodontist.com.
If you’re experiencing tooth pain
or sensitivity, don’t delay your care.
Visit an endodontist to protect your
smile and your health.
Financing the care of loved ones with a disability
StatePoint
According to the U.S. Census
Bureau, over one in four Americans
are living with a disability and about
one-half of these individuals are
living with a severe disability.
Whether present at birth or caused
by a life-altering accident or illness,
severe disabilities almost always
create a significant financial burden
due to curtailed earning power and
ongoing expenses. That’s where a
specialized trust or savings account
may help both the individual with
special needs, and their families.
To honor Disability Pride Month
this July, Wells Fargo is sharing
information about Special Needs
Trusts (SNTs) and Achieving a Better
Life Experience (ABLE) accounts in
order to help individuals and families
understand their options.
What are special needs trusts?
SNTs are irrevocable trusts drafted
by an attorney. They’re used to set
aside money or property to cover
the needs of individuals living with
physical, mental or developmental
disabilities who may not have the
ability or legal capacity to manage
their assets and keep detailed records.
How are SNTs funded? The two
types of SNTs depend on the source
of funding:
• First-party SNTs are funded
with money the beneficiary owns,
or is awarded as compensation for
medical malpractice, personal injury
or another type of legal settlement.
Typically, they’re created by the
beneficiary’s parents, grandparent,
legal guardian, or a court, and are
for beneficiaries under 65. When the
trust terminates, Medicaid is entitled
to reimbursement of any funds
expended on the beneficiary.
• Third-party SNTs can be
established at any time by someone
wishing to provide for a minor or
adult with special needs, including
as part of an estate plan. Unlike
first-party trusts, they may be created
by anyone, and there is no age
restriction on the beneficiary. The
terms may be modified, and there
is no reimbursement requirement
to government programs. While
advantageous, their complexity often
requires professional assistance.
What are SNTs’ benefits? An SNT
can help you or a loved one:
1. Meet current cash flow needs
and plan for the future.
2. Preserve eligibility for
governmental benefits. People
living with disabilities may become
ineligible for state and federal
benefits if their income and resources
exceed certain thresholds. Under
federal law and regulations, an SNT
helps ensure a beneficiary remains
eligible for these programs.
3. Enhance quality of life by
providing financial support for
activities and services inadequately
covered by public benefits programs.
In addition to medical, dental and eye
care expenses, appropriate purchases
may include an accessible vehicle,
medical equipment, computer, gym
membership, therapy animals, music
lessons, supplemental caregiving
services, and even entertainment and
travel. The goal is to increase the
beneficiary’s ability to enjoy life and
participate in their community.
Is an SNT a good fit for my
family? Do you have an adult child
living with a disability who will
need care beyond your lifetime?
Are you receiving a personal injury
settlement? Do you need to protect
your public benefits eligibility? Are
you considering making provisions
in your estate plan for a loved one?
If so, then an SNT may be a good fit.
Wondering how to protect your assets?
The Law Office of Julie Low can help
The Law Office of Julie Low practices
exclusively in elder law, estate planning,
probate and estate administration, and
special-needs planning.
The firm designs customized,
comprehensive will-based and trust-based
estate plans to meet each client’s unique
needs. Whether your goal is to protect
assets from future long-term care costs,
minimize estate taxes and administration
fees, ensure a legacy for your descendants,
provide for your needs in the event of
incapacity or protect and provide for a
family member with special needs, the
Law Office of Julie Low can design an
estate plan that meets your objectives.
Attorney Low opened her Beverlybased
firm because she had a vision for the way
law should be practiced — with a focus on
the client instead of billable hours.
She believes in creating an inviting,
personable atmosphere where clients feel
comfortable discussing very personal
subjects. Attorney Low fully engages
her clients in the design process,
educating and guiding them to make
informed decisions. The end result is a
comprehensive plan clients understand,
rather than a set of documents that have
little personal meaning.
The firm charges fixed prices instead of
traditional hourly rates for estate planning.
Attorney Low believes clients appreciate
knowing the cost of services up front and
the open communication such an approach
fosters.
Client meetings are centered
around important issues — not the
clock — and are handled with a touch
of lightheartedness, when appropriate,
"because contemplating disability,
incapacity or death is not a delightful or
pleasant experience for most."
Clients are invited to contact Julie, or
a team member, with questions, without
worrying about being billed for extra time.
One of the firm’s specialties is the
creation of Long-Term Care Plans to
help clients navigate the complicated
regulations of Medicaid, Veterans Benefits
and other government programs.
Because Julie is knowledgeable in
planning for both types of Medicaid
(traditional nursing home and the lesser
known, but unbelievably beneficial,
community programs), she reviews
her clients’ options with an eye to all
programs to ensure each plan provides
later flexibility.
Julie is a member of WealthCounsel,
ElderCounsel, The National Academy
of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA),
and The Academy of Special Needs
Planners.
She graduated cum laude from Western
New England University School of Law
in 2007.
In her free time, Julie volunteers
with North Shore Elder Services’ Money
Management Program, assisting local
seniors with paying bills and budgeting,
and on Northeast ARC’s Human Rights
Your Guide to Estate Planning, Probate, and Trust Administration
in Massachusetts and Protecting Your Family’s Legacy
No one enjoys thinking about the complexities of estate planning or probate, but both are essential in protecting your family's future.
Whether you are looking to secure your family’s future through the implementation of an estate plan or navigate the complexities of
probate to ensure that your loved one’s wishes are honored, our team at Casey Lundregan Burns, P.C. is here to help guide you through
each process.
Navigating the Probate Process:
While probate may seem daunting, our team of experts at Casey Lundregan Burns, P.C. strive to make this a seamless process from filing
a petition through final distributions.
Probate is the legal process through which an individual’s estate is settled under the supervision of a court after they pass away. These
proceedings are critical for validating the deceased’s will, paying off debts, and ensuring assets are distributed according to the will or, in
the absence of a will, state law. Though essential, probate can be lengthy and public, leading many to explore alternatives through estate
planning.
Why Estate Planning Matters:
Effective estate planning is not limited to assets; it is a tool for peace of mind. An effective plan ensures your legacy remains intact and
your loved ones are provided for, even in your absence by utilizing personalized solutions that align with your individual needs and goals.
Careful and strategic planning often implements wills and trusts to outline how your assets will be distributed after your death as well as
powers of attorney which designates someone you trust to make financial and medical decisions should you become incapacitated.
Further, healthcare directives, also known as living wills, delineate your wishes regarding medical treatment if you are unable to do so
yourself. Beneficiary designations then ensure your retirement accounts, life insurance policies, and other financial accounts are up to
date, while guardians care for minor children in your absence.
Why Choose Us?
With three generations of combined experience, Casey Lundregan Burns, P.C. has built our firm legacy on strategically guiding families
through the intricacies of estate planning and probate law. We specialize in crafting meticulous plans that account for your individual
needs to secure your wishes and protect your family’s future.
Working Toward a Century of Service: Casey Lundregan Burns, P.C.
In 1924, William J. Landergan graduated from law school after earning his way through university by working shifts at his
family bakery. William's values remained attuned to the importance of hard work and asset conservation, and he
incorporated these ideals into his business model." when he opened a law firm of his own in 1926.
1920s-1950s
After founding his practice in 1926, William shortly thereafter navigated the stock market crash and fiscal crisis that turned
lives and fortunes upside down. His devoted service to clients and the surrounding community led to his election as a State
Representative for West Lynn in the General Court for the Massachusetts Legislature in 1935. William continued in service
as the First Assistant Attorney General and was eventually appointed the Presiding Justice of the Lynn District Court in 1952
where he served in that capacity until his death in 1970
1960s-1980s
Judge Landergan’s daughter, Pauline, kept the legal practice in the family when she married Joseph David Casey, a Boston
College and New England School of Law graduate. Joseph, a skilled litigator, was simultaneously appointed to serve as an
Assistant District Attorney for Essex County, while continuing to manage a thriving private practice and remain devoted to
the local community. Joseph served as Legal Counsel for the Lynnfield Center Water District, the Essex Agricultural and
Technical Institute and President of the Essex County Bar Association.
1990s-2000s
Pamela and Christopher, two of Pauline and Joseph Casey’s five children, earned their law degrees and joined the
family firm. Christopher redirected the practice’s focus to probate litigation, probate administration, and estate
planning. Pamela left the practice to focus on Public Service. Christopher brought his wife, Sharon, into the practice.
The couple met in Washington, D.C., during their law school clerkships and married in 1992. Sharon naturally took on
a Supervising Partner role with the Real Estate Department until her appointment at the Judicial Nominating
Commission. She later became Clerk-Magistrate of the Cambridge District Court, where she remains today.
Casey Family Joins Forces with Lundregan Team
In 2006, Christopher merged the Casey firm with the well-respected firm of Lundregan and Lundregan. The firm was
managed by the husband-and-wife team of William J. Lundregan and Jane T. Lundregan, Boston College Law School
graduates. The merger was a natural fit for two strong firms with a focus on family and asset protection.
2010s-Present
In 2017, Attorney Allison Rose Burns joined the firm’s Litigation Department after graduating Suffolk Law School cum
laude. Allison has earned a reputation as one of the best probate litigators in Massachusetts and was named a Rising Star
by SuperLawyers Magazine three (3) years in a row. Casey Lundregan Burns, P.C. now includes eight attorneys supported
by knowledgeable administrators, paralegals and assistants all devoted to protecting families in Massachusetts with
fiduciary litigation, probate administration, estate planning, and real estate assistance throughout the Commonwealth.
How compounding pharmacies
Most consumers know how a traditional
Here’s everything you need to know about
these specialized healthcare facilities, and
how they have the potential to improve your
wellness.
What is a compounding pharmacy? A
compounding pharmacy employs the art and
science of creating personalized medications
based on a patient’s specific requirements,
ensuring an individualized approach to
healthcare.
“The conventional, mass-produced,
one-size-fits-all approach to medication
unfortunately does not work for all patients.
Compounded medications however can help
ensure patients get the therapies they need
safely,” says Shaun Noorian, CEO and founder
of Empower Pharmacy, a compounding
pharmacy that specializes in men’s health,
women’s health, dermatology, hormone
replacement, weight management, IV therapy,
longevity, sexual wellness, mental health and
gender affirming care.
Why is this important? Compounded
medications are crafted to address individual
requirements, such as allergies to certain
ingredients, dosage adjustments, or the need
for alternative forms of medication (for
example, needing a liquid instead of a pill
form). In short, compounded medications
deliver therapy required for individuals to
live healthier, happier lives in a form that can
optimize their care. These medications can
also play a vital role in addressing challenges
related to FDA-approved prescription
medication shortages.
Tips to have a safe
and healthy summer
StatePoint
Summer is a great time to try new
activities and get outdoors, but the
season also brings with it unique
risks, according to medical experts.
“Regardless of where you are
in your fitness journey, the warm
weather months offer opportunities
to reevaluate your wellness goals
for the remainder of the year. But as
you and your family get active, it’s
important to prepare. Understanding
water safety and sun safety, and
recognizing the signs of heat-related
conditions are all critical,” says
Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, M.D., M.P.H,
president of the American Medical
Association (AMA).
To help you enjoy a safe and
healthy summer, the AMA offers
these tips:
1. Be smart about sunscreen.
When shopping, look for a broad
spectrum sunscreen of at least
SPF 30. Also, understand that no
sunscreen is waterproof, and you’ll
need to reapply it every couple of
hours and after exposure to water or
sweat.
2. Make sure your family is upto-date
on their vaccines. Before
summer travel or camp season,
double check everyone’s vaccine
status. If you have questions,
speak with your physician and
review trusted resources, including
getvaccineanswers.org.
3. Prioritize water safety. Ensure
everyone in your family achieves
water competency skills. Teach
children to ask permission before
going near water, have them and
inexperienced swimmers or boaters
wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved
life jackets, and, at the beach, always
swim in lifeguarded areas.
4. Reduce your intake of
processed foods and sugar-sweetened
beverages, especially those with
added sodium and sugar. Eat less
red meat and processed meats,
and add more plant-based foods to
your diet, such as fresh fruits and
vegetables, olive oil, nuts and seeds.
Also reduce your consumption of
sugar-sweetened beverages and drink
more water instead. Drinking sugary
beverages, even 100% fruit juices,
is associated with a higher all-cause
mortality risk, according to a study
published in JAMA Network Open.
5. Take advantage of warmer
weather and find ways to be
physically active. Exercise is
essential for your physical and
mental health. Adults should get
at least 150 minutes of moderateintensity
activity or 75 minutes of
vigorous-intensity activity each
week.
6. While exercise is important,
it’s essential to be smart about it. If
exercising outside, avoid the early
afternoon (noon to 3 p.m.) when
it’s hottest. Drink water before,
during and after physical activity,
and wear light-colored, lightweight,
moisture-wicking clothing. Be on the
lookout for signs of heat exhaustion,
including cool, moist, pale skin,
heavy sweating, headache, nausea
and dizziness. CDC’s Heat Risk
Dashboard informs on how best to
protect yourself when temperatures
can impact your health.
7. If consuming alcohol, do so in
moderation as defined by the U.S.
Dietary Guidelines for Americans—
up to one drink per day for women
and two drinks per day for men, and
only by adults of legal drinking age.
8. Know your blood pressure
numbers. Visit ManageYourBP.org
to better understand your numbers
and take necessary steps to get
high blood pressure, also known as
hypertension, under control.

How to erase negative
self-talk and feel better
StatePoint
It’s been four years since the
collective trauma of the pandemic
created widespread grief, anxiety
and isolation, but the psychological
wounds of this period have not fully
healed.
The American Psychological
Association reports continued
elevated rates of anxiety and
depression among Americans,
and mental health experts say
that negative self-talk plays a
large role in these conditions and
other psychological issues. The
good news? Individuals can work
on subtracting a harmful inner
monologue from the equation.
“Simple tools can help people
break the cycle of negative self-talk
and find some inner peace,” says
Elizabeth Scott, PhD, a wellness
coach, health educator and author of
“8 Keys to Stress Management.”
That’s why Pilot Corporation of
America (Pilot Pen) is supporting the
Erase Self-Negativity Initiative in
partnership with key mental health
and wellness experts, including
Dr. Scott, and with guidance from
America’s largest grassroots mental
health organization, the National
Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
As part of the initiative, Dr.
Scott and NAMI have created a
guided exercise to help individuals
begin their journey toward erasing
the disempowering influence that
negative self-talk has on their lives.
The exercises include writing down
the negative beliefs one holds about
themself and then destroying or
erasing the writing, a practice that
has been found by research to be
helpful in minimizing those beliefs.
“Simply externalizing these
negative thoughts empowers us to
rewrite our narrative and opens the
door to giving ourselves more grace,”
says Dr. Scott.
Dr. Scott stresses that similar
to maintaining physical health,
consistency is key with mental
health. This is why every April 10
will be recognized as National Erase
Self-Negativity Day and the initiative
will use the 10th of each month, as
a day to start or revisit the writing
exercise and reflect on personal
progress.
Here’s what’s needed to get
started:
1. A quiet, restful location,
2. A desire to create change
3. Paper
4. A FriXion erasable pen, which
offers more than just the ability to
write and erase completely; but also
symbolizes the power individuals
have to change things and write more
positivity into their story.
The Erase Self-Negativity
Worksheet can be found by visiting
eraseselfnegativity.com. For
additional resources to understand
how common, and treatable mental
health issues can be, visit nami.org.
“While we can’t control the
negative messages we might receive
from the outside world, we can work
on what we tell ourselves. With just
a few minutes of quiet time, we can
harness the transformative power of
writing in a way that will challenge
the damaging assumptions we hold
about ourselves and foster more selfcompassion,”
says Dr. Scott.

How to keep feet and ankles in good shape this summer
StatePoint
Summer fun and chores alike
come with potential hazards to feet.
According to the American College
of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, here’s
how to protect feet and ankles from
the most common seasonal hazards:
Be DIY Safe
DIY projects like power washing,
roofing and decking require ramped
up safety measures. Always wear
closed-toed shoes with traction to
prevent injuries, splinters, puncture
wounds and falls. Mowing can
be particularly hazardous. The
U.S. Consumer Products Safety
Commission estimates more than
37,000 Americans suffer a power
mower-related injury annually.
“Lawnmower blades whirl at
3,000 revolutions per minute. Yet
we see patients who’ve been hurt
operating a mower barefoot,” said
Matthew Dairman, DPM, FACFAS,
a board-certified foot and ankle
surgeon and a Fellow Member of
the American College of Foot and
Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS). “Foot
injuries range from dirty, infectionprone
lacerations to severed tendons
to amputated toes. People need to
take lawn mowing safety seriously
because the injuries can, indeed, be
Delta Dental & Blue Cross
Provider and accept most
insurances
very serious.”
To avoid becoming a statistic,
follow these sensible guidelines:
• Don’t mow a wet lawn. Losing
control from slipping on rain-soaked
grass is the leading cause of foot
injuries caused by power mowers.
• Wear heavy shoes or work
boots—no sneakers or sandals.
• Never pull a running mower
backward.
• Keep the clip bag attached
during operation to prevent
projectile injuries.
• Use a mower with a release
mechanism that automatically shuts
it off when hands let go.
• Always keep children away
during mowing.
• If an accident occurs, even a
minor one, consult a foot and ankle
surgeon right away.
Wear Sunscreen
Many people skip their feet when
applying sunscreen, but did you
know that the skin on your feet is
highly susceptible to melanoma?
In fact, it’s the most diagnosed and
fatal site of this form of skin cancer.
Other types of skin cancer can also
be found on the foot, including
squamous cell and basal cell
carcinoma. To keep your feet safe
How Hearing Aids Help
You Hear Your Best
At Atlantic Hearing Care we
are passionate about keeping you
connected to your friends and
loved ones through better hearing!
We know that many individuals
experiencing hearing loss can start
to feel isolated and withdrawn from
the people and activities they once
loved. Hearing all the sounds in the
world around us not only helps keep
us connected but it also helps to
keep our brains healthy.
We recommend everyone over
the age of 50 have a baseline
hearing evaluation completed.
Then, if hearing loss is discovered,
hearing aids may be recommended.
The hearing aids used today are
full of innovative technology that
is personalized to each individual
user. Hearing aids can determine
the type of environment the listener
is in and make real time, automatic
adjustments to cater to the listener’s
needs in that environment, allowing
you to hear at your best everywhere
you go. They are discreet and easy
to use. Most modern hearing aids
also have additional features such
as Bluetooth streaming, hands
free streaming of phone calls, and
rechargeability.
At Atlantic Hearing Care, we
continue to learn about and adopt
the most cutting-edge hearing aid
technology available to best support
our patients. With our clinic, not
only will you be able to work with
innovative hearing aid technology,
but also a team that cares about your
personal listening goals and works
hand in hand with you to achieve
them! Give us a call at 781-581-
