A word from the Principal...
Dear families,
As we race towards the summer holidays, I sit down to write my final Ludgvan school
newsletter. After 18 years at the school, 6 as Principal, it will be a strange feeling when
we finally break up in a fortnight, knowing that, unlike the previous 17 summers, I
will not be returning in September. When I first started, we were a 5 class school with
under 140 pupils. Since then, we have grown considerably, become a local school of
choice and continuously developed and broadened our provision so that our children
have the richest, most diverse primary experience we can offer. I’d like to take this
opportunity to thank each and every one of you for the support throughout this journey
and over my time at Ludgvan, it is a truly special community that I will greatly miss.
It’s been another busy few weeks as is always the case during the summer term with
visitors, trips and residentials, but there have been three particular highlights for me:
Moana. What an amazing set of performances! The children performed fantastically and
delivered every line with confidence and feeling, never dropping their focus throughout
the 3 evening shows. I’d like to thank the staff team who have dedicated hundreds of
hours to make the show the spectacle it was and something that our children will not
soon forget.
Sports Day. With the exception of a few drops of rain, the sun shone and great fun was
had by all; children, staff and spectators alike. I am a strong believer that sports day
is an important part of children’s development; it allows pupils to shine in areas they
may excel in, develops resilience in those who may not be as successful as they would
like or who find competing a challenge and further develops feelings of teamwork and
togetherness. I believe that we have the balance just right, with team events in the
morning and more individual efforts in the afternoon and I’d like to thank Mrs Wherry
and the staff team for executing the plan so smoothly. A huge shoutout to the FLS who
not only provided refreshments, but organised the colour run, which is always such an
amazing ending to a wonderful day.
New Intake. Recently, we welcomed our reception class for September 2024 into school
for their transition sessions. They were all incredibly brave, coming into a new building
with no tears and demonstrating fantastic behaviour throughout. We can’t wait to welcome
them into Ludgvan school on a full time basis in September.
We have a number of events still to take place, not least our Y6 Leavers Assembly, so
things are showing no signs of slowing! See you all on the gate in the mornings.
Kind regards,
Adam Anderson
Principal

Goodbyes
It is with great sadness that we bid a fond farewell to two members of staff at the
end of term.
Firstly, Mrs Barber, will be leaving to take on a role at Penzance Wave Academy. Mrs Barber
has worked at Ludgvan for 10 years, teaching from Early Years to Y5 and also leading our
additional needs provision in her role as SENDCO. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank
Mrs Barber for all of her hard work at Ludgvan and wish her the best of luck in her new role
in September.
Miss Hutton is also leaving to continue her teaching career at St Ives Infants from September.
Miss Hutton has been covering Mrs Barber’s maternity leave in our reception class and
has been a fantastic member of staff during her year with us. Good luck next year Miss Hutton!

Sports...
SPORTS
This term is always our busiest for sporting events and we always make sure we participate
as fully as possible with as many pupils as possible. We have taken part in tennis at Penzance
tennis club, Quadkids at Mounts Bay Academy, swimming galas at St Ives Leisure Centre, four
different cricket tournaments in St Just with our KS2 children, the Penwith Athletics event at
Carn Brea Leisure Centre, surf days with Global Boarders at Gwithian (partly funded by the
FLS, for which we are very grateful), balance bike sessions at school for our EYFS children,
three country cricket finals and we are hosting the annual local school orienteering event next
week. A huge well done to everyone for another fabulous sports day and thank you to the
FLS for the refreshments and the colour run and the MBA sports students for all of your help
When it comes to sport, we don’t shy away, we jump at the chance to play!
A huge well done to everyone for taking part in all sports this year, whether you have turned
up every week to your club either inside or outside of school, represented school in a sport,
or just challenged yourself to do something physical every day.
Over the next few weeks we will be applying again for the School Games Kite Mark award.
Last year we received Gold, so I am hoping we will match this again this year.

Farm Club...
FARM CLUB
This past month on the farm has seen lots of busy work around the vegetables. The children
have been caring for the vegetables they planted earlier in the year, weeding and removing
caterpillars, providing support structures where necessary and checking for signs of disease
as well as monitoring growth and progress. The potatoes are almost ready to harvest and the
courgettes are well underway. Unfortunately, the strawberries and raspberries have not lasted
long enough to harvest properly - they are picked and eaten by the children as soon as they
appear!
We have also welcomed our newest arrivals; turkey chicks. So far we have had three hatch
successfully and we are hoping that there will be a few more to come. The last time we
hatched turkeys, they did not make it to Christmas due to predators, but hopefully we will
have more luck this time.

EYFS
Wow! Well what a return to school we have had. This half term has been a very busy one for
rainbow class!!
We started by exploring the Olympic Games, learning all about the opening ceremony and its
traditions. The children created their own Olympic torches using a new technique they learned
called collage. This term’s big question, “Have I got what it takes to be an Olympic hero?”
guided us in examining different types of heroes and what qualities make someone a hero. In
Drawing Club, we drew pictures of our heroes and discussed what makes them special.
Our visit to St Michael’s Mount was a highlight, as we arrived by boat and walked back across
the famous causeway. We learned about the Mount’s history, the legend of the giant and his
heart, and even met Lady Mary, who lives in the castle.
Sports Day was a fantastic event. The children competed in their team colours, participating
in a range of activities and races in front of the parents in the afternoon. They showcased
their super speed in the races, their balancing skills in the egg and spoon race, and their
jumping skills in the sack race. All the children were a credit to the school.
With only a few weeks left before the summer holidays, I want to express how proud we are
of all the children in Rainbow Class and thank the parents for their support throughout the
year!

Year 1
Year 1 have been busy learning about the five oceans of the world and have been finding out
lots of interesting facts. We read the story of ‘The Lonely Sea Dragon’, and afterwards the
children created beautiful pictures of the sea dragon. They worked incredibly hard retelling
the story and produced some lovely written work.
As part of our whole school topic, we have been learning about the Olympics. The children
made their own Olympic torches! They all enjoyed the online assembly with the Paralympian
Stefanie Reid.
Sports day provided a great opportunity for the children to experience a variety of sporting
activities in the morning carousel. They had lots of fun racing in the afternoon with all the
parents watching!
Well done Year 1.

Broad and Balanced...
Year 2
This term is all things Olympics! We have immersed ourselves in the Olympics throughout the
curriculum in preparation for Paris 2024 and most importantly, for our very own Sports Day.
In English, Year 2 have been writing biographies about a variety of Olympians such as Usain
Bolt, Tom Daley, Simone Biles and Rebecca Adlington. Hopefully a copy has reached home by
now, but I am happy to share again for any parents.
In Art, we have used our sketching and oil pastel skills to create flags for the horticultural
show as well as for Sports Day. It was fantastic to see the knowledge the children already had
about different flags around the world.
In PE, we have explored athletics through different activities including running and the high
jump. All of the class amazed me with their determination when it came to tackling the high
jump. We’re now moving onto rounders for the final weeks of term.
A special well done to Year 2 in this year’s Sports Day. Each and every child tried their best
and supported those around them. They all have fantastic sportsmanship and represented the
school so well.

Year 3
Year 3 have had a very busy few weeks. We have worked closely with the Minack Theatre
team to prepare for our performance on the stage at the Minack Theatre at the end of term.
We have been singing, dancing and acting with John Brolly. We sound great so far and can’t
wait to get on the stage for our final performance.
We have thrown ourselves into our new Olympic topic and have found out about the ancient
Olympics and about Paris 2024. We have written biographies about our favourite sporting
hero. As well as designing and writing recipes for a healthy snack for an athlete, which we
then made and tested!
During computing we have used Scratch to create an Olympic scene and we were all able
to make mini animations of a sport of our choice. In science lessons we have been learning
about forces and magnets and have been investigating friction and magnet strength. We had
lots of fun doing these investigations.
Lots of us have also been in and out of class representing the school in sporting activities.
Well done Year 3, you’re working very hard. Keep up the good work.

Year 4
It has been a really busy week for Year 4. We were proud of their efforts at Sports Day and
they enjoyed their trip to the cinema on Tuesday, courtesy of the FLS.
The residential trip has been the highlight of the year, although the energetic Year 4’s nearly
broke the staff team on their first night with their ability to stay awake. They had fun on the
water, kayaking, stand up paddle-boarding and coasteering on their first day, followed by
dinner and evening entertainment. On the second day, they tested their skills at archery and
axe-throwing in the morning and on the high ropes and leap of faith in the afternoon. They
were very brave with the caving, learning how to get out of tight spaces. They enjoyed raving
in the rain at the silent disco, one of the quietest parts of the trip. The last morning was spent
learning bushcraft and survival skills including den building and toasting marshmallows.
It has been a really amazing adventure year 4!

Broad and Balanced...
Year 5
Year 5 have enjoyed a fantastic month, including a surfing day, pizza making and sports day.
In June, we spent a beautiful, sunny day at Gwithian learning to surf with Global Boarders.
Most of us managed to stand up on our boards and catch at least one wave!
We also had the opportunity to learn about pizza making with Educatering and made our own
pizzas as part of our DT project.
This term, our curriculum has been focused around the Olympic Games and as part of this,
we chose our own Olympian to write a biography on. It was really interesting to research all
of the different sports and people who make the Olympics as special as it is.
Year 5 have worked really hard and I am very proud of them all. Keep up the good work!

Broad and Balanced...
Year 6
Since year 6 finished their SATs, they have had an amazingly fun, yet busy June.
We completed our penultimate unit of science related to living things and their habitats; in
particular, the classification of the animal kingdom and bacteria / fungi. It was interesting to
learn about the biologist, Carl Linnaeus and his pyramid of taxonomy and how this evolved to
help understand and classify all living things. We created our very own unique creatures with
characteristics of a mixture of creatures (mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish and birds).
We also conducted an experiment to grow our own mould on slices of bread. The experiment
was to determine if more moisture would increase growth rate, and there was conclusive
evidence that it did. We also ensured fair-testing by considering many factors that could be
controlled to ensure the experiment was accurate, such as washing hands thoroughly. We
avoided touching the materials unnecessarily, sealed the bag from the outside environment,
and kept the entire experiment in a stable temperature. Although the results were disgusting,
it was fun to see the variation of colours and growth on each slice.
Year 6 also took part in their final residential of their primary school lives. It was a long trip to
the south coast of Devon, where we stayed in a beautiful hostel within Beer. On our trip, we
visited Adrenaline Quarry where we did go-kart racing and the total wipeout water activity,
visited Devon’s Crealy, and also visited Paignton zoo. We were very lucky with the weather,
which made it an even better experience.
Finally, to end our exciting June, Global boarders invited us to the beach for a surf session,
which was partly funded by a generous donation from the team at FLS. We were very lucky
with the weather; the sun was shining and the conditions were great in the water. Most of the
children really enjoyed the trip, which included some beach games and rock pool jumping.
