Recently, I bought a new car—my first in over 15 years. Before the ink was dry 

on the purchase agreement, I began questioning my decision. Should I have 

gone smaller? Should I have bought a used car? Why didn’t I pick a better color? 

When I called my older sister for some comforting words, she came through. 

“Karen, you always think there is a perfect decision out there,” she said. “And 

there isn’t.” 

Immediately, I knew she hit the nail on the head. Yes, the options were overwhelming, 

but I did lots of research and made a sound choice. Although there 

are still days when a convertible pulls up at a light next to me, and I think…. 

So, when a friend of mine started remodeling her kitchen and asked me for 

help, I shared my sister’s advice: There is no one right answer. Look at pictures. 

Pick a style. And try to not get overwhelmed with choices. Find something 

that works with your budget and makes you—not your neighbor, not your 

sister—happy. 

And while I always love to offer my two cents, I know for certain you will get 

a better answer from a talented designer, contractor, or other professional who 

knows the ins and outs of the industry. Spend the time to find the right team. 

Communicate your needs and wishes and let them take a bit of the decisionmaking 

burden off your shoulders.

Log cabin makeover taps into influence of previous owners

Looks can be deceiving... 

After an initial approach via a 

nearly half-mile-long drive with 

equestrian arenas to the left and 

to the right, you arrive at what 

you might guess to be a centuryold, 

hand-hewn log cabin. The 

scene is bucolic. The home sits 

amidst acres of open land with a 

bountiful supply of mature trees, 

a rippling pond, and horse stables 

and their residents trotting in 

nearby fields. 

While the trees, horses and 

ponds are what they appear, the 

main cabin is a bit of an illusion. 

Seasoned architects have estimated 

the home to be over 100 years 

old, but in fact it was built in 1981. 

The original owner, Ken 

Klosterman, of the Cincinnatibased 

Klosterman Baking 

Company, and his wife Judith purchased 

this 228-acre property in 

Goshen Township to accommodate 

Judith’s passion for horses. 

The log cabin they built here— 

with a design and materials from 

a firm in northern Quebec— 

included a lower level perfect for 

Kenneth’s favorite hobby—performing 

magic. Dubbed “Salon 

de Magie,” this space became 

home to the homeowner’s extensive 

magic collection, a widely 

respected historic compilation 

of over 50,000 books, posters, 

tricks and memorabilia. ➻

Nearby neighbors 

Kevin Malof and his wife Jodi lived across 

the street from the Klostermans for 20 

years. 

Once the land was passed on to the 

Klostermans’ children, there was interest 

from a production builder to place 600 

homes on the property. That’s when Kevin 

approached the family about buying the 

property with a plan to maintain as much 

rural land as possible. 

He contacted an acquaintance he met 

through his son’s school, Dan deStefano 

with deStefano Homes and Remodeling. 

The two men produced a scenario which 

parceled out just under 40 acres for luxury 

home development which they dubbed 

The Reserves at Stone Pillars Farm, the 

site of this year’s Homearama. Next, they 

allotted 11 parcels ranging in size from 11 

to 30 acres each. The “smaller” of these 

are for single residences, the largest is 

home to the equestrian facility, White Tail 

Eventing. The land includes four miles of 

riding and walking trails. 

The Malofs would hold on to 60 acres 

keeping the setting of the log cabin home 

idyllic. 

A bit of hesitation 

Meanwhile, Jodi was not enthusiastic about 

living through a remodel of the log cabin. 

“I didn’t want to live in a house with a lot 

of small rooms,” she says. “Plus, for 30 

years—our whole marriage—we’ve been 

renovating.” Between businesses the couple 

owns in Loveland—including Curated 

Fine Furnishings and Design and Bishop’s 

Quarter—and previous homes, she says it’s 

been a constant stream of remodeling work. 

When Kevin said, “We are going to hire 

someone to do it right,” Jodi’s attitude 

shifted. That “someone” was the team at 

deStefano Homes and Remodeling, led 

by Dan and Rocky deStefano. The couple 

closed on the property in October of 2022 

and construction began the following 

February. ➻ 

The hearth room’s fireplace is original, 

but a new floating mantel was added. 

An interior wall of hand-hewn timbers 

adds a rustic touch to the library.

First things first 

“At our first meeting, Kevin asked me 

if we could get the home to a point 

where Jodi liked it and it was functional,” 

Rocky says. 

One of the major roadblocks was 

the primary bathroom. The ceiling 

was angled so steeply that movement 

in the space was terribly limited. 

“There wasn’t even enough room to 

hang a mirror over the vanity,” Jodi 

says. 

It was important to Jodi, who suffers 

with back issues, to have space 

for a soaking tub. Not having that, 

she says, was a “dealbreaker.” To make 

the space work, the construction crew 

“completely blew out the dormer and 

roof” over the bath area, to now have 

the vertical space to include a wet 

room with a spacious shower and the 

requisite tub. 

“That’s now one of my favorite 

rooms,” Jodi says. 

Respectfully updated 

As it was with the primary bath, the 

major goal for the entire home, Rocky 

says, was to keep the integrity of the 

original structure, but bring it up to 

spec. “We were shooting for a happy 

medium between adding modern 

amenities and keeping with the style 

of the cabin.” 

The log cabin’s construction method 

presented challenges to the renovation 

team. “The exoskeleton of 

these homes is independent of the 

interior walls,” Rocky says. “Inside, 

a system of beams holds the whole 

place up.” 

Thankfully, a few obstructing interior 

walls were able to be removed. 

This made a significant difference to 

how the floor plan flowed and functioned.

Something old, something new 

To hold on to the charm, many of the log cabin’s original elements remained in 

place. Existing hardwood floors, true-divided light windows and interior and 

exterior doors were refinished. 

As for the mechanics, all the plumbing was updated, lighting fixtures were 

replaced, a new roof was added and the exterior was re-stained. Plus, the 

kitchen and baths were remodeled from the floor up. 

The original kitchen had one island, but a wall and an enclosed butler’s pantry 

were removed for a more open flow between the kitchen and dining and 

living areas. A second island was added which provides additional seating and 

when needed, acts as a serving area for the dining room. 

A pantry and wall were removed to make room for a second island. 

The front dual staircase was kept, but a 

new iron stair rail gives it some panache.

Easy does it 

The lower level, which had housed much of Klosterman’s collection was converted to what Jodi and 

Kevin refer to as their “speakeasy.” Illusions begin as guests access the space, via an elevator, which 

(they are told) will make the 83-foot descent into the space previously held by an old mineshaft. 

In what had been Klosterman’s museum, there is now a well-equipped bar, poker room, billiards 

room and hidden doors and revolving bookcases mixed in for added fun. Across the room, the magician’s 

original stage and lighting were left in place and are a huge hit during the couple’s recently 

added karaoke nights. 

“The fact that it’s a stage with lights makes all the difference,” Kevin says. “People want to be on 

stage.” The couple has collected old keyboards and guitars so that performers can really rock out. 

“You get to see a whole new side of your friends,” Jodi says. ➻ 


More horsing around 

This newly improved home has revealed 

a whole new side of Jodi as well. Possibly, 

in channeling the spirit of the previous 

lady of the house, she has taken up, and 

taken to, horseback riding on Annie, her 

12-year-old Tennessee Walker. 

“I have never been around horses in my 

life,” she says. “At first I was nervous. But 

now I groom her, tack her and do everything 

myself.” 

Kevin, who has been around horses his 

whole life, saddles up Levi, his 5-yearold 

Rocky Mountain Horse. The couple’s 

sons, Max and Alex, who are in their 20s, 

don’t ride, but given the setting of their 

parents’ compound, that could change in 

the future.

Happy trails 

Completing construction in November 

of 2023, the Malofs are thrilled with how 

their new home maintains the character 

that its original owners created, yet 

provides them with the modern conveniences 

they require. That was the mission 

with which the deStefano team was 

tasked. 

“We gave them our vision and they 

met every challenge, “Jodi says. “They 

were amazing. When we first considered 

buying this property, I was definitely 

hesitant, but now, I love it here!”

Home steeped in history gets age-appropriate makeover

Anyone who purchases a home built in the 1880s must have a good dose of 

respect for the story that has been unfolding within its walls for nearly 150 

years. Fortunately, the Columbus neighborhood of German Village happens 

to have a slew of homeowners who have the honor of carrying on this community’s 

rich traditions. 

One such homeowner, Meghan Carey, is a devotee of the area. These 

brick-paved streets have been her home for several years, as she moved 

from one address to another within the community. This is where she met 

her husband Michael (at Lindy’s) and where she is raising her two young sons. 

“I love the walkability, character, charm, and especially the people,” Carey 

says. “There’s a wonderful variety here, we’re not all in the same box.” ➻

quintessentially German Village. 


Interior re-design 

The uniformity of the village’s red-brick exteriors, wrought iron fencing and tree-lined streets 

are an undoubtable draw for Carey and others who live here or visit the area. But as an interior 

designer and owner of City Park Interiors, it’s inside one of these homes, where she had fun putting 

her own stamp. 

“I wanted the home to be happy, open and fresh, but honor the traditional,” she says. 

Previous owners had converted what had been a connected, side-by-side two-family home to a 

single residence. But a staircase running right through the center of the home, dissecting living 

spaces, remained. It was the suggestion of architect Andy Melaragno, to move the staircase. That 

was a game changer. 

“Moving that staircase was really huge,” says Carey. “Before the front two rooms were unusable. 

It was like walking through a tunnel to get through to the back of the home.” 

During the extensive remodel, the interior of the home was almost completely gutted. New 

windows and new flooring were installed. The load-bearing brick wall, which originally separated 

the two units, still stands but is now painted a soft gray. 

Replacing the original center staircase, with this grand version, added both beauty and

A burled wood island adds a traditional touch to the kitchen with its white perimeter cabinetry and marble countertops. 

While renovation efforts were underway, the couple rented a house right around 

the corner. “The house sat vacant for six to nine months while we were working on 

plans,” Carey says. 

Working with Andy Melaragno along with Todd Schmidt and the team at 

Renovations Unlimited, the decision was made to add eight feet to the upper floor 

to allow for the reconfiguration of three smaller bedrooms. Now this floor features 

four bedrooms with a primary suite moving from the back of the home to the front. 

On the main floor, a larger addition addressed many of the homeowners’ concerns. 

“We wanted a nice big kitchen,” Carey says. We wanted a mudroom and a big 

walk-in closet. Storage was key. We really wanted to maximize that.” ➻ 


Good timing 

Construction concluded in December 

of 2019, shortly before the effects 

of Covid-19 would change how 

the remodeling industry—and the 

world—would function. Fortunately, 

Meghan, Michael, and their infant 

son, had a haven of just under 3000 

square feet where they could isolate 

and grow accustomed to their new 

family dynamics. 

While supply chain issues would 

delay getting many of the interior furnishings 

in place, the home now had a 

footprint that functioned beautifully 

for the young family. 

“We wanted it to feel warm and 

cozy when you walk in the front 

door,” Carey says. “The entry serves 

as an open walkway to the rest of the 

house.” 

A wall that previously held what 

Carey says were “useless built-ins” 

has been replaced with gray-painted 

woodworking that serves multiple 

functions including display shelving 

and drawers for much needed storage. 

“There are mittens and hockey 

gear in those drawers,” she says. 

In between is an upholstered banquette 

that serves as a handy spot 

for removing shoes, or on occasion 

listening to Michael as he tickles the 

ivories. Renovation plans reserved 

this specific spot for the baby grand 

piano Meghan gave him for a recent 

birthday. 

On the other side of the original 

brick wall is a formal living room. 

While many of her clients might want 

to see patterns and colors match a 

bit more than she does, Carey has no 

issue mixing geometric, floral, solid 

and textured fabrics. The overall take

of this room shows the designer’s 

penchant for “wanting the space to 

feel collected.” This is a space where 

she gravitates to on those rare occasions 

of alone time. 

Between the living room and the 

kitchen, stands a dining room. “I 

wanted an actual formal dining 

room,” Carey says. “Not a lot of people 

are doing dining rooms anymore, 

which I understand, but find a bit 

sad.” To make gatherings more inviting 

and encourage guests to linger, 

the designer selected a 72-inch round 

table and comfortable seating for six. 

On the opposite side of the wall, 

still in the footprint of the original 

existing space, is the striking new 

staircase, which makes the traffic 

pattern make so much more sense. 

And just down the hall is a half bath 

decked out in gold and blue geometric 

Schumacher wallpaper. 

“A powder room is always a good 

place to have fun with design choices,” 

says Carey. 

The back of the home, which 

includes a breakfast nook, kitchen, 

great room and living area, is a lightfilled 

space. In a similar fashion as in 

other rooms of the home, a dramatic 

light fixture hangs from the center of 

this room’s ceiling. 

“Ten-foot ceilings allow for larger 

fixtures,” Carey says. “I prefer to use 

statement lighting over can lighting 

anytime I can.” Also, as it is in other 

rooms of this home, formal drapery 

panels flank the large windows and 

French doors. 

“I love drapes, I think they soften 

the room,” Carey says. “And I like 

using pattern.” ➻

An existing garage was removed and replaced with this flagstone patio and grass courtyard 

and a new garage closer to the rear alley.

Pops of color 

While most of the furniture, cabinetry, woodwork, and window treatments 

stick to a neutral palette of soft beiges, warm grays and caramels, carefully 

selected pieces of art add inviting bold splashes in each room. 

“Art is my way of bringing color into the house,” Carey says. 

Even in the back courtyard, the furnishings adorn elegant white slipcovers. 

But here the art comes in the form of ivy-covered fencing, rows of arbor vitae, 

and overflowing containers of annuals and succulents. 

This inviting space is a favorite warm weather hangout for the young men 

of the house. It was enlarged once an existing garage was torn down and a new 

one was built closer to the rear alley. 

And when the mood strikes for the family to step out, it’s an easy walk to dinner 

at one of the community’s many fine restaurants, or a stroll through nearby 

Schiller Park—creating family traditions in this community that happens to be 

steeped in tradition.

Custom-built home artfully blends rustic elements

They say inspiration can come from anywhere, and for this family of five living 

in Greater Dayton, the inspiration for their dream home came from the 

mountains of Colorado. After spending multiple vacations skiing the slopes of 

this state, the family fell in love with the mountain-style homes they saw there. 

Wanting to bring a piece of that rustic elegance back to Ohio, the homeowner 

began her own visionary journey, meticulously collecting photos 

and references as her North Star. To pull all these elements together, she 

partnered with Dan DeVol of Daniel DeVol Custom Builder and his team 

of expert craftsmen. 

“When it came time for my team to join, the homeowners already had 

a clear idea about what they were looking for,” DeVol explains. “We 

specialize in helping our clients select the right materials that bring their 

vision to life.” ➻

Carefully crafted 

The home’s exterior is framed by real 

stone, which is then carried inside 

throughout the kitchen and great room. 

DeVol sourced the stone from out of state 

to get the precise color needed for the 

project. Hand-scraped maple hardwood 

floors, and custom millwork throughout 

the home further embrace the natural 

design. 

The kitchen features an array of materials 

and textures, combining contrasting 

wood, stone, and metal into a harmonious 

fusion. The farmhouse sink, which 

looks as though it was dropped in directly 

from one of the homeowner’s inspiration 

pictures, is custom-made of copper. 

This metal acts as an accent theme in the 

kitchen, culminating in the hand-made 

hammered copper range hood. 

An entertainer’s haven 

At first glance, the bright kitchen, spacious 

great room, and sunny outdoor 

space might feel like the go-to place 

for entertaining, but the family’s secret 

showstopper is their wine cellar and basement 

bar. 

Thanks to the couple’s many trips 

to California, their wine collection has 

grown extensively over the years, resulting 

in a need for storage. “The interior 

of the wine cellar is lined with reclaimed 

barn wood for a rustic touch,” DeVol says. 

“We coupled that with a modern display 

structure that showcases each wine label 

so they can really absorb their collection.” 

A large glass window looks out over the 

rest of the bar which is made from white 

oak. The bar is finished with a custom 

countertop, and features ample storage 

for everything from spirits to specialty 

glasses. ➻ 


Fit for function 

A functional layout was key for this family, ensuring each room had a purpose 

and they had plenty of places to relax. 

The kitchen touts a hidden walk-in pantry with an oversized lazy Susan, 

while built-in storage keeps countertops free from mess and clutter. And, to 

stop any potential clutter before it enters the home, a mudroom lines the 

garage entryway with designated locker-style cubbies for each of their children. 

A combined laundry-office-craft room serves as a catch-all for the family’s 

day-to-day activities, while the upstairs level serves as a playground for their 

three children. The space was intentionally made versatile enough to grow as 

they did, supporting their changing hobbies and interests. The dance studio, a 

once-popular place for their children to practice their dance and cheer routines, 

has since been transformed into the preferred dressing room for school dances, 

while the craft room now often serves as a mess-free nail salon. ➻ 

Comfy seating and a fireplace give the upper level outdoor space year-round appeal.

The back yard features a generously-sized pool, waterfall, hot tub, pizza oven and fire pit. 


The stone portico to the right leads to a four-car garage. 

Soak up the sun 

Another favorite is their expansive back yard, complete with a two-story outdoor living space, a 

pool and hot tub, and backyard bar. The pool, with its stone wall and waterfall, is a popular spot 

for their kids and their friends. The stone wall is often used as a jumping point, while the hot tub 

makes the outdoor space enjoyable year-round. 

“If we’re not in the kitchen, we spend a lot of our time outside. No matter where we start in the 

house, we always seem to end up out there,” the homeowner laughs. “One of the reasons we bought 

our land was for the sunsets, so whether we’re lighting a bonfire or having a glass of wine, we’re 

probably ending our days outside.” 

The landscaping was carefully chosen by Doug Rhinehart and his team at Grandma’s Gardens 

to balance the need for easy maintenance with regional suitability. Again, referencing their rustic 

vision, aspens and similar plants surround their home, bringing a bit of Colorado into Ohio. 

An extended family 

“I worked with Dan and his team almost every day for two years, so it got to the point where they 

all felt like family,” says the homeowner. 

One key member of the “family” was Bruce Landes, who worked on the DeVol team as their cabinetmaker 

for close to 20 years. “Bruce was brilliant; I’d bring the wildest ideas to him, and he was 

able to run with them and bring back something better than I had ever imagined,” the homeowner 

reminisces. Bruce passed away in May of 2022, but his knowledge and keen eye are still celebrated 

in the family’s dream home. 

Today, the family makes great use of every room in the house, enjoying both solo time in their 

individual spaces and time together outside or in the great room. 

“Designing and building our dream home is one of the best experiences I’ve ever had,” the homeowner 

proudly shares. “I wanted to create something timeless for our family, and now we get to live 

in something we love for years to come.”
