PROGRAM NOTES:<br />
AS WE GET OLDER, WE DISCOVER DEEPER PARTS OF OURSELVES THAT PROCESS<br />
INFORMATION FROM UNLOCKED ANGLES THAT WERE NOT PREVIOUSLY AVAILABLE<br />
WITHIN OUR PAST SELVES. FOR MYSELF, I SIT WITH MISTAKES I HAVE MADE, SUCCESSES<br />
I RACK UP, AND FEELINGS THAT I COLLECT AND TRY TO TAKE THE TIME I NEED TO<br />
REFLECT ON THE MANY FACETS OF MY LIFE. I CALL THIS “SELF-REFLECTION” AND I DO<br />
IT OFTEN. I TRY MY BEST TO DO IT WITHIN A SPACE THAT SITS within the<br />
UNCONDITIONAL LOVE INSIDE OF ME.<br />
AS I MENTIONED EARLIER, WE DISCOVER MORE OF OURSELVES AS WE GET OLDER. AS<br />
WE GET OLDER, HOW WE SELF-REFLECT CHANGES, AND THINGS THAT ONCE WERE,<br />
CAN BECOME MORE SOUR… PAINFUL… HAPPIER… OR EVEN JOYFUL. THIS PIECE IS<br />
TITLED “SELF REFLECTIONS” AS IT PROVIDES MY MUSICAL INTERPRETATION OF THE<br />
CYCLICAL NATURE OF HOW SELF-REFLECTION WORKS FOR ME AS I PEER INTO THE<br />
DIFFERENT FACETS OF MY OWN HUMANITY.<br />
I THINK IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT FOR YOUNG PEOPLE TO ACQUIRE THE TOOLS<br />
THAT ARE NECESSARY TO JOURNEY THROUGH LIFE BEYOND JUST KNOWING HOW<br />
TO PASS STANDARDIZED TESTING AND MAKE IT TO CLASS ON TIME. I THINK<br />
EMOTIONALLY STRONG PEOPLE MAKE FOR COURAGEOUS PEOPLE. I HOPE THAT THIS<br />
PIECE CAN SPARK CONVERSATION AMONG YOU AND YOUR STUDENTS ABOUT<br />
CONCEPTS SUCH AS AGENCY, PROACTIVENESS, AND SELF-REFLECTION BECAUSE IT<br />
MAY BE WHAT HELPS THEM GET THROUGH THOSE MOMENTS THAT ARE SOUR,<br />
PAINFUL, HAPPY, AND JOYFUL IN THEIR FUTURE.
PERFORMANCE NOTES:<br />
SELF REFLECTIONS IS MY SECOND DIVE INTO WRITING FOR FLEX BAND. THIS PIECE<br />
TAKES IDEAS THAT I PRESENT FROM MY FIRST STRING QUARTET AND IT ALLOWS THE<br />
STUDENTS TO DIVE INTO JAZZ HARMONY WHILE ALSO BEING Conscious OF THEIR<br />
DYNAMIC CAPABILITIES.<br />
EVERY PART PLAYS A UNIQUE ROLE IN THE HARMONIC LANGUAGE AND I BEGAN<br />
STUDYING THIS IDEA OF UNIQUE FOUR-PART HARMONIES WHILE LISTENING TO THE<br />
MUSIC OF MASAHI HAMAUZU. I RECOMMEND LISTENING TO THE MUSIC OF FINAL<br />
FANTASY 13 TO GAIN A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THIS STYLE OF MUSIC<br />
CAN SWAY AND DANCE.<br />
