‘I HAVEN’T BEEN DRINKING’ SAYS DRIVER . . .
• By Felicity Dear
A DOG whisperer driving
to Christchurch for canine
training blew almost five times
the legal drink driving limit
when caught by police.
Belinda Gael Culling
initially told police she had
not been drinking. But the
breath test told otherwise: She
recorded a breath-alcohol level
of 1191mcg. The legal limit is
250mcg.
The 54-year-old, who owns
Dog Whisperer Services Ltd,
appeared in court on Tuesday
where she pleaded guilty to
aggravated drink-driving. It
was her seventh drink driving
offence.
She was sentenced six
months’ community detention
with a weekend curfew, and
was disqualified from driving
for 28 days, after which alcohol
interlock provisions will apply.
The court heard that on
February 9, police received
complaints about Culling’s
driving.
She was stopped in Timaru
and told police she had not
consumed any alcohol that
day, but an evidential breath
test revealed that was far from
the case.
The court heard Culling
had a flat tyre in Oamaru and
while it was being repaired
stood aside and drank wine before
continuing on her journey.
Culling told police she was
driving from Dunedin to
Christchurch to train her dogs
the next morning.
Counsel Rhona Daysh said
the high level was “immediately
shocking”, but her client
now accepted she was an alcoholic
and was receiving help.
Judge Michael Turner said
there were lots of potential
victims on the road during the
hours Culling was driving.
He noted Culling took
particular pride in her dog
training business, which she
was putting in jeopardy by
drink-driving.
“You’re saved from prison
today by the 14-year gap in
your offending,” Judge Turner
said.
New bid
to build
houses
near
airport
• By Daniel Alvey
CITY COUNCILLORS are
just weeks away from deciding
whether to support a bid to open
up land for housing affected by an
airport noise contour.
Current rules do not allow
houses to be built in Christchurch
Airport noise contour areas,
reducing the potential for future
anti-noise complaints.
If rules are changed, it has the
potential to open up development
opportunities on Memorial Ave,
on land to the east of Russley Rd
and Johns Rd, and in Yaldhurst.
City councillors will finalise a
staff submission to Environment
Canterbury on the issue on
August 7, as part of its Regional
Policy Statement review.
Mayor Phil Mauger appears to
be in favour of a rule change, a
position he had three years ago
when he was a city councillor.
Mauger, Selwyn Mayor Sam
Broughton and Waimakariri
Mayor Dan Gordon have met
over the issue. Selwyn and
Waimakariri want to be able to
build housing under contours in
their districts.
LIME HAS launched its new
seated scooters in Christchurch.
Along with Auckland,
Christchurch is one of just a few
cities around the world to get the
new model after successful pilots
in Nashville and Chicago.
Said regional general manager
ANZ at Lime, Hugo Burt-
Morris: “It is an inviting option
for those wanting to take longer
trips with the luxury of a seat
and a storage compartment
perfect for riding Lime to work
or home from the supermarket.
“We learnt from previous
vehicle pilots and in addition to
Lime’s internal research found
storage space to be a key factor
in riders choosing micromobility
as a transportation option.
ONE OF Canterbury’s favourite
rugby sons has revealed he was
once offered a rugby league
contract across the Tasman.
Former Crusaders and All
Blacks star Richie Mo’unga
turned down an NRL contract
offer six years ago in a face-toface
meeting with then-Warriors
coach Stephen Kearney.
Mo’unga, who has professed
to having a soft spot for rugby
league, had been in Brisbane
helping the New South Wales
Blues prepare for last night’s
third and deciding State of
Origin match.
Mo’unga told the Sydney
Morning Herald he had been
invited for “a bit of personal
development” after playing
at fullback in a practice game
against the NSW side.
Mo’unga’s older brothers both
played rugby league and the
30-year-old had been tempted to
play the 13-man code at school
level.
Mo’unga revealed he was
made a serious offer to join the
Warriors in 2018, the year he
played the first of his 56 tests.
“It got as serious as meeting
with Stephen Kearney, my agent,
my father-in-law and ‘Sully’
(Warriors recruitment manager
Peter O’Sullivan),” Mo’unga said.
“The reason I stayed was because
I played rugby and my only
dream and goal was to be an All
Black and to play at a World Cup.
“It’s one of those things you’ll
always have conversations with
your mates about, saying how
it would have been awesome (to
switch).”
Mo’unga began a three-season
convenience, aiming to attract
riders new to shared electric
vehicles and build on the
popularity of sustainable,
human-scale transportation
options in a city where
micromobility is ever growing.”
Burt-Morris said the seated
scooter is fully motorised
and has the potential to allow
more older riders and riders of
varying abilities to use them.
Children
found alone
after fire
alarm
sounded
A NEIGHBOUR of the young
children found alone in a
smoke-filled house says it’s “just
awful” they’d been left there.
Emergency services were
called to a smoke alarm sounding
at a Eureka St property in
Aranui, about 10pm on Tuesday
last week.
Police Canterbury area commander
Superintendent Lane
Todd said two young children
were found inside.
“Fortunately, they were rescued
from the address before a
fire started,” Todd said.
A neighbour, who did not
want to be named, said she
heard the fire alarms and panicked.
“Myself and another neighbour
went over to check what
was going on,” she said.
“We tried to get into the
house but all the curtains were
shut and doors closed, we had
no idea if the kids were in there.
“I called Fire and Emergency
because no one else seemed to
react.”
The woman said the alarm
kept going off and she became
concerned.
“It’s just awful, those kids are
just babies, you don’t leave your
kids alone at home, you just
don’t do it,” she said.
Fire and Emergency communications
shift manager Blair
Walklin said crews noticed “a
smell of burnt cooking on arrival”.
They found unattended
cooking inside the house.
Police thanked neighbours of
the property who called for help
and prevented a tragic outcome.
A 35-year-old woman
was taken into custody the
following morning. She is
facing charges for ill-treatment
of a child, resisting police, and
possession of a cannabis plant.
She is due to appear in the
district court on July 31.
Housing rule change could open up
case for rapid transport link to airport
• From page 1
Broughton told his district
councillors he had met with
Mauger and Gordon to discuss
the subject.
“Phil, Dan and I all want to
see the protection of 24-hour operation
at the airport . . . but we
don’t think that should restrict
housing activity underneath the
airport contours,” Broughton
said.
Mauger
declined to answer
questions
from The Star
on whether he
would support
the rule change.
Instead, a city
council spokesperson
said: “We
Phil Mauger
are still forming a staff position
on the draft RPS and this will be
subject to council approval on
August 7.”
In 2021, when Mauger was
a city councillor and mayoral
candidate, he wanted the
restrictions gone.
He said the city was
“desperately short of land”
and the contour land was
“not beautiful marshland or
farmland. It is solid land that
EMPTY: Large sections of land on Memorial Ave are still undeveloped due to the airport
“We need more people paying
rates in Christchurch, to reduce
the burden on our ratepayers
of paying for infrastructure,”
Mauger said at the time.
“Fifty and fiffty-fifve decibels
is no worse than what you’ve got
in Memorial Ave with cars
going past.
“This is our chance. Here’s the
land – let’s bloody do it,” he said.
Mauger’s comments were
in response to a delegation of
landowners wanting the rules
changed.
The landowners said in 2021
the 50 decibel airport outer noise
contour was the only one in the
world. They were outdated and
based on obsolete house building
standards without sound
protection, now double glazing
was a requirement on all new
builds, they said.
a mass rapid transit link along
Memorial Ave to the airport,
which never made the business
case because of the contours
restricting the required
housing development needed
for MRT.
Said Broughton: “It is a big
problem for Kaiapoi and it
also restricts building down
Memorial Ave and was one of
the key reasons the proposed
MRT route didn’t have a line
towards the airport because we
couldn’t get the housing density
there.”
Gordon wanted the changes.
“As long as noise levels are
taken into consideration and
considered as part of the housing
and subdivision design, I believe
housing should be allowed
within these areas,” he said.
In a statement, Christchurch
Airport would not say whether
it supports housing under the
contours.
Rugby club alleged fraudster’s
former home renovated, for sale
THE FORMER home of an
alleged fraudster has been
just months after it was sold
cheaply.
‘Begging You For Mersey!’ the
Harcourts listing for the Mersey
St, St Albans, property reads.
Nicola Flint is accused of stealing
more than $100,000 from
the Christchurch Football Club
while entrusted with its finances.
She and her Kiwi husband
Andrew Flint and their two teenage
children left for the United
Kingdom in December.
The family home, with a rateable
value of $930,000, was left
behind in the process, along with
her husband’s building company,
Flint Construction.
The home was bought by a
property investor for $713,000
in April, allowing the rugby club
to retrieve the missing money.
A caveat had been placed on
the property after negotiations
between the club and Flint’s
lawyers.
Rugby club chair Craig Calder
previously said he was very
pleased by the payment.
“We’re delighted. That means
we can put money back into
Three months later, the house
has been spruced up and is back
on the market.
‘With every aspect considered
this family home has had a tasteful
renovation, ready for its new
owner to call it home,’ reads the
Harcourts Merivale listing.
The four-bedroom, two-bathroom
house has a new open plan
kitchen and dining area and has
been painted. It has a “generous”
living area, a separate lounge and
a fenced yard with spa.
The home goes to auction
on July 24 seeking offers above
$850,000, The Press reported.
Police have a warrant out for
Flint’s arrest, after she failed to
appear in court in June. She is
unlikely to face nine fraud-related
charges unless she returns to
New Zealand from the UK.
Most of the funds she was accused
of stealing were destined
for the club’s junior teams.
A police spokesperson said
they are unable to comment on
whether they were trying to extradite
Flint to New Zealand and
did not answer if they knew her
exact location in Wales.
“Extradition processes are on
a case by case basis, taking into
consideration the country and
nature of offending,” said the
spokesperson.
Flint is also accused of faking a
terminal cancer diagnosis.
Andrew Flint returned to
New Zealand in early June and
was spotted in Invercargill, but
returned to the UK after about a
week. His family have previously
pleaded with him to return home
with his children.
He claimed McFie had made a
racist remark towards him.
“Using your own words, you
totally lost it – anger took over,
and . . . this was the angriest
you’d ever felt,” Judge Graham
Panckhurst said before sentencing
him to life in prison, with a
minimum non-parole period of 10
years later the same year.
However, last week that
sentence was given an end date
as the New Zealand Parole Board
agreed to release Hoani in August.
“I’ve learnt patience which was
my worst enemy for carrying on
in life,” Hoani told the board.
“Everything is not done in a
flash.”
Hoani will be released into the
care of a rehabilitation centre
which will help him reintegrate
into the community.
McFie’s niece, Louise Wegner-
Parker said she found it hard to
believe Hoani had learnt patience
behind bars.
“He was a very, very angry
man,” she said.
KILLER: Colin Hoani at the High Court in 2013.
“How can he be so different to
how he was before he went to jail?”
Wegner-Parker said overall she
wasn’t surprised Hoani had been
released because “10 years is just
what you get for murder in New
Zealand.
“It’s still impossible to
understand that a 10-year
sentence is appropriate for a
murder that our family believes
was preconceived.”
Following McFie’s death at
the MacGibbon Pl complex,
get for murder in New
Zealand.”
the city council conducted an
independent review of its social
housing and made changes to the
way risks to its tenants and staff
were identified.
In 2013 at Hoani’s sentencing,
the court was told that there had
been a “history of disharmony”
between McFie and Hoani.
McFie made a complaint to the
city council and steps were taken
to try and resolve the differences,
including unsuccessful mediation.
On Saturday, July 20 at about
6.20pm, Hoani was sitting outside
his flat drinking a cup of coffee
and smoking a cigarette.
He claims that when McFie
returned home, she fired a racial
comment at him, which he later
said was the last straw.
He then took a boning knife
This report was produced by
Open Justice – Te Pātītī, an
NZME initiative funded by
NZ on Air
and stabbed her repeatedly in the
upper torso where she collapsed
and died on the spot.
Hoani’s defence counsel initially
asked for him to be assessed as a
Mentally Impaired Person but a
report found he had no mental
health problems that in any way
mitigated or explained the killing.
At a brief hearing before the
parole board last week, Hoani was
asked about his health.
He said he had “packed on a few
pounds” but was otherwise strong
and healthy.
“I’m 70 now, and I’ll be past my
used-by date in five years time,”
he said. “That’s my family history.
Everyone in my family has passed
away before they were 70.”
Following his first hearing after
becoming eligible for early release
a year ago, the board’s chair Sir
Ron Young described Hoani as
“bombastic, gruff and impatient”.
At his hearing, panel member
Professor Phil Brinded noted
Hoani seemed more open and in
good spirits.
“They say you can’t teach an old
dog new tricks, perhaps that’s not
true.”
Four teens
charged
over shop
break-in
FOUR TEENAGERS are facing a
variety of charges after a break-in at
a Cashel St shoe shop on Sunday.
Police were called to the store
about 2.15am after the alarm was
activated when the youths smashed
the glass and took several items
from the shop.
Christchurch Metro Area Commander
Superintendent Lane Todd
said the youths were aged between
14 and 16.
The charges against them
included burglary, unlawfully
getting into a motor vehicle and
wilful damage.
About 15 minutes after the
burglary, Todd said the teens were
spotted in a vehicle on Bridge St,
South New Brighton about 2.30am.
The driver failed to stop for police
when told to pull over. Officers
deployed road spikes at the Pages
Rd and Rowan Ave intersection to
stop the vehicle.
“The car was successfully spiked
and police soon located the vehicle,
with one young person inside, on
Idaho Pl, Burwood,” Todd said.
The other teens were located a
short time later in the Burwood
area.
SURVEY RESULTS show strong
support for increasing the speed
limit back to 100km/h on State
Highway 75 between Halswell
and Little River. Results also
show keeping the speed limit
between Little River and Akaroa
at mostly 60km/h.
More than 1600 people responded
to the survey, which has
been set up by Banks Peninsula
MP Vanessa Weenink. About
75 per cent favoured returning
the speed limit to 100km/h from
Halswell to Little River with the
rest opposed.
For the winding section
to Akaroa, about 80 per cent
favoured the lowered speed limit
which is mostly 60km/h.
Weenink wrote a
letter last Thursday to
New Zealand Transport
Agency Waka Kotahi in
support of the survey’s
findings. The survey is
still open.
After holding
community meetings
and reviewing the
survey results, Weenink said
blanket speed limit reductions
are “deeply unpopular” with the
“I was surprised with the
percentage of people who
wanted them back up. It’s
not a scientifically valid
survey, but it was a great
chance to be open and
listen to people,” she said.
Speed limits were
reduced on State Highway
75 in September 2022.
In the Government’s
draft speed rule, speed
limit reductions on rural State
Highways since January 1, 2020
will be reversed by NZTA, unless
there is demonstrated public support
for keeping the lower limit.
Weenink said the letter serves
as her key submission on the issue
and an expression of what the
community wants from NZTA.
Weenink told The Star in April
data she received from rural
Canterbury area police commander
Peter Cooper showed
fewer crashes after the speed
limit decreases, which changed
her mind on restoring the higher
limits.
This was after campaigning at
the election for the increase as
Weenink denies the letter to
NZTA is another reversal in her
position, saying “safety should
still be taken into consideration”
for any upcoming speed limit
changes.
“While I acknowledge that the
reduction in speed limits has led
to a decrease in crashes and no
fatalities, safety must be balanced
with practicality and community
sentiment,” Weenink said in the
letter.
COURT 11
‘No sentence will ever heal the wounds’
• By Adam Burns
THE GRIEVING mother of
an infant girl murdered by her
father has told him she will never
forgive him for what he has done,
the High Court has heard.
Thirty-seven-year-old Michael
John Topp was sentenced to life
imprisonment, with a minimum
non-parole period of 17 years, at
the High Court at Christchurch
on Tuesday by Justice Anne
Hinton.
He was found guilty by a jury
in May of fatally injuring the
3-month-old alongside two further
charges of grievous bodily
harm.
The infant, who has permanent
name suppression, was rushed to
Christchurch Hospital on New
Year’s Eve 2021 with a severe
head injury.
She died two days later.
An autopsy found the baby
sustained more than 30 fractures
to both legs and her ribs.
Prior head injuries were
believed to have been sustained
during the same month, consistent
with “very violent shaking”.
Topp said the baby’s death was
a case of manslaughter, and he
never intended to kill her.
The infant’s mother, who also
has permanent name suppression,
delivered a heart-wrenching
victim impact statement during
Tuesday’s sentence hearing.
sentencing for
murder at the
High Court.
MCKINNON/
RNZ
The judge had read further
victim impact statements from
family but these were not read in
court.
A photo of her daughter was
visible on the High Court display
monitor as the mother addressed
the court and Topp, who appeared
emotionless in the dock.
“No sentence will ever heal the
wounds Mike has inflicted on
me,” she said.
“Nor take back pain that (she)
endured until her heart gave out
as a result to Mike’s actions.”
Topp’s alleged lack of accountability
and remorse were
highlighted multiple times by the
mother.
The court heard further
disturbing details of the man’s
behaviour in hospital.
After expressing breast milk
for her daughter, nurses informed
her the milk would need
to be disposed of as the infant
was now “brain dead” and unable
to consume food.
“Mike drunk the milk in front
of the nurses and said ‘well, she
won’t need it anymore’.”
The mother described the pain
of losing her baby as like “my
entire world being blown up”.
“The pain was accentuated by
not understanding how or when
she was harmed.”
She also explained how her
mental health had “taken a hit”
following the horrific tragedy.
“I have to give myself a reason
to wake up every day, to accept
that I may never ever get real
answers, to accept I may never
get closure.
“Mike took it all from me.”
She implored the judge to
hold Topp accountable before
addressing her former partner
directly in closing her remarks.
“Mike, I will never forgive
you.”
The court then heard submissions
from both the Crown and
the defence, where Topp’s mental
health struggles and inability
to cope with parenthood were
touched upon.
Justice Hinton addressed the
mother and said after assessing
all the evidence, that she was an
excellent and devoted mother,
who could not have suspected
what would occur.
The judge also agreed Topp
was not “genuinely remorseful”
for the killing.
“She should’ve been safe in
your care but she was the complete
opposite.
“You abused your position of
trust.”
In handing the sentence down,
Hinton said violence against
young children “was regrettably
all too common in our society”.
“There can be no excuse for
abusing a child.
“Your actions must be roundly
denounced.”
Religious order
asked to leave
Catholic diocese
PHOTO: RNZ
• By Niva Chittock
THE CATHOLIC Bishop
of Christchurch has asked
a religious order accused of
holding prolonged, unsanctioned
exorcisms to leave the diocese.
The Survivors Network of
those Abused by Priests complained
to the Catholic Diocese
of Christchurch and police
about reports of ritualistic abuse
and other forms of faith-based
abuse by Sons of the Most Holy
Redeemers clergy since August
2021.
The traditionalist order, also
known as the Transalpine Redemptorists,
was a conservative
movement within the Catholic
Church. Its mother house or
principal community was
Golgotha Monastery Island in
Scotland.
SNAP national leader Dr
Christopher Longhurst said the
allegations included children
being told they were possessed
by Satan, people having lengthy
exorcisms performed on them
without prior medical examination
and isolation of parents
from their children.
Some of the
claims made by
children and
their parents
were horrifying,
he said.
“It gave me
goosebumps to
hear what was
being disclosed
to me on the
phone.”
Christopher
Longhurst
Longhurst said he was also told
a young pregnant woman was
tied to a chair and beaten, under
the pretext of having the “devil
cast out of them”.
The Sons of the Most Holy
Redeemers were yet to respond
to RNZ’s request for comment.
The Catholic Church’s national
body was informed of the complaints
and SNAP was told it was
working with the order to follow
safe-guarding protocols.
Longhurst said it was not clear
what monitoring was put in
place.
When Michael Gielen became
Christchurch’s bishop in 2022,
Longhurst said SNAP informed
him of the complaints and called
for action.
He said few responses were
received from Bishop Gielen until
a Holy See investigation was
launched in November last year.
Australian Bishop Robert Mc-
Guckin conducted the inquiry
and sent a report to the Vatican.
Bishop Gielen this week accepted
the recommendations of
the Vatican department overseeing
the investigation.
He did not detail what the
recommendations were, nor
how the investigation had been
conducted or what it found.
Bishop Gielen
stripped the
priests of their
faculty, meaning
they would no
longer be able to
practise within
the rules of the
Church, effective
from July 14.
All professed
members of the Sons of the
Michael
Gielen
Most Holy Redeemers were also
asked to leave the Christchurch
diocese.
But Longhurst said the Catholic
Church’s response was not
good enough.
“The current Pope, Pope
Francis, has a zero tolerance
for abuse. So presumably, the
complaints have been upheld on
some level,” he said.
“The priests just have to leave
that particular diocese. So
where’s the zero tolerance? Because
the consequences are that
they go somewhere else and the
risk is they continue.”
Longhurst said the complainants
SNAP was supporting had
not seen the report to the Vatican
or the recommendations,
and had not been informed
about the Bishop’s move before it
was publicly announced.
“Put the victims first, don’t put
the institution first. The victims
are harmed because of what’s
taking place in the institution.
Protect them and the institution
will be a safer place for them.”
Police told RNZ they were
unable to respond to queries
that “seek to establish whether a
specific person or organisation
is, or has been, the subject
of a police complaint or
investigation”.
Mosque terror attack
hero set for assault trial
A man who received a bravery
award for his actions during the
mosque terror attacks will go to
trial on an assault charge next
year. Abdul Aziz Wahabzadah
appeared at the district court on
Tuesday. He pleaded not guilty
to a charge of assaulting with
intent to injure, and opted for a
judge-alone trial, which has been
set for next March. He intends
to represent himself. Aziz was
awarded a New Zealand Cross
for bravery in 2021. During the
mosque attack in 2019 he picked
up a discarded gun, chased
the terrorist and threw it at his
departing car, smashing the back
window.
Gang associate busted
A Christchurch gang associate is
facing drugs and weapon charges
after a police bail check. The
27-year-old man, who was wanted
for breaching bail, was arrested at
a Burnham address about 9.30am
on Monday. Senior Constable Matt
Barraclough said officers “smelt
cannabis on the man and initiated
a search, locating MDMA, cocaine,
cash and items consistent with
drug supply in his bag and vehicle”.
He is due to appear at the district
court on July 29, charged with
possession of an offensive weapon,
possession of cocaine, possession
of ecstasy, participating in an
organised criminal group, and
CANTERBURY author Sue
Heazlewood has followed up her
recent award-winning Tails of
Tangleby Gardens book series
with her latest offering – Tea
Party Recipes.
The book is part of an ongoing
commitment by the author to
produce one children’s and an
adult cook book each year.
Her latest children’s story/cook
book focuses on 24 recipes, with
photography and illustrations,
and is designed to help children
learn to create in the kitchen.
It all started for this known
property developer, back in 2015
when while on holiday she says
she got bored one day and decided
to write a children’s story
book.
‘‘When I finished I discovered
I enjoyed the experience so
much, I wanted to write more,
so I sat down and wrote an adult
cook book.’’
The popular Tails of Tangleby
series was inspired by the
oversized playhouse Heazlewood
built in her expansive garden
in Ohoka for her six children,
hoping they would have some
grandchildren for her to spoil in
the coming years.
In the meantime, the grandmother
of three is writing books
combining her passion for children,
cooking and gardening.
The tales tell the story of two
‘‘The books are read at nighttime
she says.
She has also launched an
Two of her books have recently
won awards.
The Gourmand Awards are the
major food culture event in the
world, which started in 1995 for
authors of cookbooks and wine
Heazlewood continues to
write using the farm animals to
discover the wider world around
them based on her own travels to
many exotic destinations.
The next children’s book will
see them in the United Kingdom,
followed by one about their journey
through France and Italy.
Heazlewood says her cats
feature prominently in all her
books.
‘‘All the photos are taken here
on site and the garden might
be ready for people to look at
Aerospace firm
confirms US ties
A CHRISTCHURCH-based
aerospace company says it has held
initial talks with the United States
military and NASA about using
its rocket-powered space plane
as it starts testing at the Tāwhaki
National Aerospace Centre.
The aerospace centre is located
at the 25km-long Kaitōrete Spit
which separates Lake Ellesmere
from the Pacific Ocean.
Dawn Aerospace has received
approval from the Civil Aviation
Authority to fly its Mk-II Aurora
aircraft at unlimited speeds at up
to 80,000 feet.
Co-founder and chief executive
Stefan Powell said the US military
would not use its plane at the aerospace
centre or anywhere in New
Zealand if the talks progress.
“Under current parameters (i.e
our current certification from
the CAA), we cannot fly any
payloads for external parties, let
alone a military one, let alone
any foreign military, from any
NZ aerodrome,” Powell said in a
statement.
It comes as Birdlings Flat
residents say they have been blindsided
over possible vertical rocket
launches from the aerospace centre,
12km from the settlement.
They say the aerospace centre’s
owner Tāwhaki Joint Venture
committed to horizontal
and drone launches only at a
community meeting in June 2021.
Powell said Dawn Aerospace has
no involvement in Tāwhaki’s plans
for vertical rocket launch pads at
the aerospace centre as it does not
build any vertical launch vehicles.
“We have never talked about
this with Tāwhaki as we have no
interest in it.”
Tāwhaki is jointly owned by the
Crown and the two Ngāi Tahu
rūnanga located near the spit, Te
Taumutu and Wairewa.
The potential military uses
for the Aurora Mk-II include
simulating and detecting rocket
trajectories.
The plane will be tested at the
centre until September with an
aim to reach supersonic speeds.
It is beyond belief that anyone
would consider launching rockets
into space from the Kaitōrete Spit,
Birdlings Flat, Lake Ellesmere area
(The Star, July 11).
This is a highly sensitive natural
environment for birds and other
wildlife. Who in the right mind
would think that firing rockets
from here wouldn’t have any
impact on the wildlife?
Add to that the claim that the
rocket site would create 1300 jobs.
Do we really want that number
of people driving out to Kaitōrete
every day?
There is no doubt that the result
of a rocket launch site in this area
would be increased pollution,
terrified birds, reduced access for
the public and a few organisations
with bigger bank balances.
Such a shame that the assertion
of being at one with the land often
melts away when the opportunity
to make some money appears.
Hopefully Environment
Canterbury and the Christchurch
City Council will decline any
future consent applications for
this facility and help protect this
incredible part of our country.
Residents of the Greenpark
Huts were told they had to move
because of sea level rise, although
no flooding has ever happened
there. Then they had to go so
Ngāi Tahu could build a centre of
excellence for gathering food on
that spot. No worries of sea levels
rising for that building.
Now we are getting closer to
the real reason why they are being
evicted with plans for vertical
rocket launches on the spit being
disclosed, and all the land around
being part of the exclusion zone
or safety zone for when things fall
back to earth. I expect those living
in Birdlings Flat will have eviction
notices as plans and funding
develop.
Depending on the rocket
fuel used, there are all kinds of
detrimental outcomes for our
environment, including warming
of the atmosphere, permanently
damaging the delicate wildlife on
the dunes and the lake itself.
Who will be the winner in
Akaroa and nearby bays house prices
PROPERTY IN Akaroa and its
nearby bays are becoming more
affordable as sellers slash their
prices.
Some of the homes have been
looking for new owners since the
start of the year and the owners
have now dropped the asking
prices to around $750,000.
The houses had failed to sell at
auction earlier this year and had
been on the market for between
three and six months as buyers
were wary of buying a holiday
home due to high interest rates
and tough economic conditions.
There are currently more than
20 houses in Akaroa listed for
sale on OneRoof, which is a stark
change from two years ago when
there were only nine properties
for sale and buyers were clambering
over each other to get into
the market.
Bayleys listing
agent Philippa
Linton said most
of the owners
were permanent
residents and
either moving
to a retirement
village or relocating,
so had
genuine reasons for selling.
Philippa
Linton
“We are just trying to meet the
market. They are all enthusiastic
sellers, they all want to sell so
they have agreed to drop their
OPPORTUNITY: A do-up at 19 Muter St, Akaroa, has dropped in price to $750,000.
prices and some of them are selling
well under the RV,” she told
OneRoof.
“All of these people are trying
to move on. They are not
desperate – I need to make that
very clear – but they are ready
to move so if somebody wants
something amazing so this is the
time when they will get something
for a very good price.”
The properties ranged from a
do-up to move-in ready in and
around Akaroa, which Linton
said would have fetched between
$800,000 and $900,000 at the
peak of the market.
Linton told OneRoof high-end
properties were still in demand,
but the mid-range properties
were taking a bit longer to sell
because they mainly attracted
out-of-towners looking for a
second home.
“I think a lot of people are
waiting to see what happens
with the interest rates, now we
know about (the) bright-line side
of things. I think people have
been tentatively holding their
foot over the brake just waiting
to see if they need to brake or
accelerate.”
An original four-bedroom,
one-bathroom property at 19
Muter St offered a huge opportunity
for people wanting to
buy the “worst house on the best
street”, she said. Not much had
been done to it since the owner
moved in 52 years go.
“You spend $250,000 to
$300,000 on (renovating) it and
you are only just cracking the
million-dollar mark where the
houses on Muter are over $1m
easy – $1.1m to $1.3m sort of
thing.”
The property had an RV of
$930,000 and was on one of
Akaroa’s most desirable streets,
she said. The owner was selling
the 1950s home to move to a
retirement village.
In the slightly more affordable
Duvauchelle, the owners
of a two-bedroom home at 18
Haywards Ln are also wanting
to relocate, while a two-bedroom
Lockwood home at 8 Bayview
Cres, currently being used
as a holiday home, is being
marketed as a holiday home.
Both have price indications of
$749,000/$750,000-plus. The
RVs are $570,00 and $810,000
respectively.
Linton said recent sales in Duvauchelle
usually fetched around
the high $800,000s to the mid
$900,000s.
“With us going offers over
$750,000, it’s really getting you
into the market.”
The fourth property to
take a price drop is a modern
architecturally inspired twobedroom
home with water views
at 13 Seaview Lane, Wainui,
which is inviting inquiries over
$775,000. Its RV is $780,000.
Linton told OneRoof: “The
difference is Wainui you drive
there as a destination and it’s this
beautiful quiet oceanside.
“It’s a bit of a hike, but once you
are there you are there. There’s no
shops, but it’s a beautiful beach
and good community.”
Linton said Akaroa had benefited
from remote workers moving
there after Covid, which had
pushed the average house price
up to past $1m. But two years
on, the main buyers tended to be
people looking for holiday homes.
OneRoof-Valocity figures
show Akaroa’s average property
value has grown
5.4 per cent
year-on-year to
$1.069 million,
but much of that
growth was in
the second half
of 2023 with values
dipping 0.83
per cent in the
last six months.
Alan
Nobbs
Harcourts salesperson Alan
Nobbs said the market was slow
which was not uncommon at
this time of year, but the cheaper
properties had been most affected.
“The buyers who have been
paying the million-dollar-plus
can afford it, whereas before our
bottom of the market where people
used to try and get themselves
HOLIDAY HOME: The two-bedroom, one-bathroom house
at 8 Bayview Cres sits above the boatsheds in Duvauchelle.
into a bach or holiday investment
type property and that market
has dropped out a little bit so the
competition hasn’t been as hard
in the low-end of the market than
the top.”
A three-bedroom, onebathroom
cottage for sale at 47
Selwyn Ave, Akaroa, had also
dropped its asking price from
$750,000 to $715,000 since being
listed in March, which was below
its RV of $810,000.
Nobbs said it was a “DIY
dream” in one of Akaroa’s
popular streets, but a lot of
holiday homeowners didn’t
want to spend their weekend
renovating a property and
wanted something already done.
Those buyers who were around
and had not headed overseas during
winter were also trying their
luck, he said, and a lot of offers
were being made well under the
property’s RV.
“Offers are coming in low and
“Buyers are quite tough. They
are going, ‘the media is telling
us it’s a buyer’s market so we will
just wait it out’.
“That lolly scramble has
gone where they knew they
had competition, now they are
coming into auction properties
and things and they are the
only one.”
‘Strong injustice demands strong
Racist slurs and a tin
of corned beef – Frank
Film’s Sally Blundell
finds out how awardwinning
poet and
performer Tusiata Avia
came to be the voice of
New Zealand Pasifika
THERE’S A moment in Tusiata
Avia’s hugely successful,
darkly funny and utterly
uncompromising performance
Wild Dogs Under My Skirt when
a Samoan woman saws open
a can of corned beef with a
machete.
“The reason corned beef is so
popular on the islands,” she tells
the audience, “is because it so
closely resembles the taste of human
flesh.”
There’s an intake of breath,
then laughter.
The line was taken from travel
writer Paul Theroux’s 1992 book
The Happy Isles of Oceania,
in which he argues the reason
why the “former cannibals of
Oceania” feasted on Spam (or,
later, corned beef) was because it
came nearest to the “porky taste
of human flesh”.
It was an outrageous comment
by anyone’s measure but
for award-winning poet and
performer Avia, it was “the
beginning”.
“I was writing about race and
justice – and why wouldn’t I be?”
said Avia, sitting on the sofa of
her childhood home in Aranui,
where she lives with her teenage
daughter and elderly mother.
“It is part of me, and it’s part of
my experience.”
Born in 1966, Avia grew up in
the 1970s and ‘80s, the daughter
of a European mother and Samoan
father. This was the time of
dawn raids, immigration checks,
racist slurs and discriminatory
job and housing practices.
As a young child, said Avia, “It
leaked right through my skin.”
She remembers as a sevenyear-old,
standing before the
bathroom mirror, patting her
face with talcum powder to see
what she would look like with
white skin.
“There was nothing cool about
being brown, particularly in my
teenage years it was something
that I tried to deny, which was
nonsense because” – she circles
an elegantly tattooed hand
around her face like a portrait
frame – “I look like this.”
Avia began writing when she
was just 10. In year 8, she was
awarded the school literary prize,
but by 15 she had put writing
aside.
“I’d lived long enough by then
to realise brown girls like me
do not go on to become writers.
It was a decision – I remember
writing my final poem and that
was it.”
ACHIEVEMENT: Tusiata Avia’s The Savage Coloniser Book won the poetry prize at the Ockham New Zealand Book
Awards in 2021, where read out her poem about Captain Cook. Above right – Avia in year 8.
She studied at Canterbury
University then took on a teaching
role at Hillary College (now
Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate)
in Auckland – a 1990 photo
shows her in embroidered shirt,
shell necklace, ankh earrings,
her signature straight-ahead,
unflinching gaze.
After a decade of overseas
travel, she returned to New
Zealand in 1999 to find “this big
flowering of Pacific and Māori
arts that I had completely missed
out on. I suddenly thought, these
are people like me, maybe I can
do this too.”
She undertook a creative
writing course at Whitireia Polytechnic
then the creative writing
programme at Te Herenga Waka
Victoria University.
Wild Dogs Under My Skirt
premiered at the 2002 Dunedin
Fringe Festival. Since then it has
been performed nationally and
internationally, first by Avia then
by an ensemble of actors.
Her work since then has won
accolades, earning her a New
Zealand Order of Merit, an Arts
Foundation laureateship and
the Prime Minister’s Award for
Literary Achievement.
Her collection The Savage
Coloniser Book (Te Herenga
Waka University Press) won the
‘(My daughter) has a
different relationship with
being Samoan than I did
at her age’ – Tusiata Avia
poetry prize at the Ockham New
Zealand Book Awards in 2021.
In accepting the prize she read
one of the poems, that poem:
250th anniversary of James
Cook’s arrival in New Zealand, a
response to the 2019 commemorations
marking the anniversary
of Cook’s arrival.
It was funny, it was tough
• Watch the
video at www.
(“I’ve got my father’s / pighunting
was provocative.
As she wrote on a Substack
blog, “Strong injustice demands
strong words. Why should I play
nice? What was I afraid of? Who
was I going to offend? And what
kind of people would be offended
by such a poem?”
Several kinds, it seems, including
ACT leader David Seymour,
broadcaster Sean Plunket and
a rabid pack of anonymous intimidators.
There was hate mail;
there was a death threat.
“It was scary. It left me feeling
particularly vulnerable because
I’m the mother of a 16-year-old
girl and I look after my 90-yearold
Mum.”
Her third book, Big Fat Brown
Bitch, includes a response to the
abuse: “Oh, that’s right: / this
is real life and someone really
does want me gone / an actual
man, with an actual name, in my
actual city // has threatened me
and would prefer me to be silent
or hurt or maybe even dead.”
It is terrifying, and poignant,
but now, as her daughter Sepela
performs the graceful moves of a
traditional Samoan dance before
her mother and grandmother,
Avia recognises a strong sense of
cultural identity.
“She has a different relationship
with being Samoan than I did at
her age. Also, the climate in this
country for young brown kids –
there’s some definite pride there,
when there was really none that I
can remember in 1981.”
She turns to her daughter.
“You’re proud, eh?”
Crusaders forwards bring
the mana for finals clash
• By Sam Coughlan
MARIST ALBION have been
boosted by the availability
of Crusaders Dom Gardiner
and Tahlor Cahill for their
preliminary final this weekend.
Cahill, a lock, has played for
the club regularly this season,
while loose forward Gardiner has
not been available for selection
since his last appearance in
April.
Co-coach Ross Kennedy said
the pair brought a lot to the
team.
“They bring with them a lot of
mana. It’s great to have them in
the group when we can.”
Cahill’s last match was for
Marist against Burnside in late
June, while Gardiner hasn’t
played since coming off the
bench for the Crusaders in their
final-round Super Rugby clash
with Moana Pasifika on May 31.
They’ll take on a resurgent
Linwood, who recorded their
second upset win in a row in the
semi-final, beating HSOB 30-27
thanks to a last-second penalty
from Josh Jennings.
The other preliminary final
sees Canterbury University host
Sydenham – the top two sides
after the regular season.
University won their qualifying
playoff against HSOB 41-38
to earn a week off, while Sydenham
came the hard way, beating
Sumner 27-25 in the semi-final
after losing to Marist in the
qualifying playoff two weeks ago.
Kennedy said his side would
be wary of the threat posed by
Linwood.
“They’ve built good
momentum in the last few
weeks and they’re a dangerous
Top-of-table Tech still happy despite loss
• By Sam Coughlan
AFTER THEIR first league
defeat of the season, Cashmere
Technical are regrouping ahead
of this weekend’s clash with
Selwyn United.
Tech went down 2-0 to Coastal
Spirit on Saturday – the first time
they’d been held scoreless in a
Southern League match since
July 2021, when they lost 1-0,
also against Coastal.
Head coach Dan Schwarz said
his side weren’t too disappointed
following the defeat – with
Tech still leading the way in the
Southern League.
“We’re still where we need to
be – at the top. We’ve still got
everything in our own hands,
and we’re still very happy with
where we’re positioned.”
runners.
“It was about 43 to 30-something
(47-36), when we played
them earlier this year, so it was a
high scoring affair.”
At this stage of the competition
last year, Linwood bowed out at
the hands of Marist, but head
coach Brendan Nolan said
they wouldn’t take any extra
motivation from that result.
“We’ve got a lot of respect for
them, I think it goes both ways.
“We just look at what’s
happening in front of us, not so
much what’s going on behind, in
the past.”
A CRUNCH final-round
Canterbury Rugby League
premiership clash awaits the
Halswell Hornets and Eastern
Eagles.
The two sides will meet at
Halswell Domain on Saturday,
both on the verge of making the
semi-finals but simultaneously
close to their season ending.
The winner will qualify for the
playoffs and potentially make the
top-two if other results go their
way. Halswell can still make the
top four with a loss if Riccarton
Knights lose to Linwood Keas.
Halswell coach Ray Hubbard
was under no illusions as to the
task facing his side, who missed a
chance to confirm their place in
the semi-finals against Hornby
Panthers last weekend.
“It’s going to be a massive
challenge, Eastern are a dangerous
side. They are super-physical, and
they like to play footy.
“When they get going and get
aggressive, they can really galvanise
and turn it on so we’ve got our
work cut out for us making sure
we’re ready to get into the contest
physically.”
Eastern have won their last three
games to stay in finals contention,
but a loss will see them miss out.
Head coach Archie Jacobs said
his side were glad to be in control of
their fortunes.
“The good thing about this week
is that our whole future is in our
own hands now.
“Previously we might have had
to rely on some results, but now
we don’t have to rely on anyone’s
results, we just have to rely on our
own performance.’’
Linwood, who have locked up
top spot and the Massetti Cup with
a round to spare, host a Riccarton
side who are also looking to confirm
their spot in the playoffs.
The other match sees Hornby,
who have also secured a semifinal
spot, make the trip over the
Compensation not criticism needed
Bevan Sisson
Rugby matters
AS THE CLUB season reaches
the pointy end of the competition
for both Metro and Country,
I headed out to the grounds to
watch some footy.
While watching an enjoyable
game I heard a passionate
supporter yell to the ref “how
much did they pay you? Open
your eyes!”.
That got me thinking. Why
don’t we pay them? We can’t do
much for his perceived lack of
vision but we can look at how we
support our unsung heroes of the
footy field.
Every weekend, men and
women head out to the park
and endure the mutterings and
sometimes abusive behaviour
from the sidelines.
For most referees it’s not just a
single game on the day, they may
go from refereeing at grade or
age group, then need to rush to
the next game to be an assistant
referee, subs controller or assist
in other areas. All this can take
up the best part of the day, and
for no compensation.
Referees are not running out
there with the expectation of
payment. They are doing it for
the love of the game. But a small
amount of financial support to
show some appreciation would
be a great start to what can be a
WHISTLE BLOWER: Being a referee at any level of sport can be a difficult job, but should
they be compensated for their time?
PHOTO: GETTY
challenging day out.
Implementing this could work
a number of ways – for example
Queensland have a match day
referee fee attached to their
playing subs for the year.
I know the bane of every team
manager’s year is getting subs out
of players and increasing them
slightly may add to this.
In Christchurch, the subs pay
for coaching, playing gear and
occasionally a bite to eat after
Thursday training. The subs
remain cheap and to include a
referee match fee for half the cost
of an after-match drink seems
good value.
European clubs have a different
version where the home team
pays for the referees on the day.
Sisson’s views. Email
barry@starmedia.kiwi
Keep responses to 200
words or less
Payment figures could be $50
for the main referee and $25 for
the assistants. If you had your
standard 22 players on game day,
that’s roughly $4.50 per player,
only when you are playing at
home.
A referee who had officiated
a Div 2 game and then was an
assistant for a senior game could
finish the afternoon with $75
which would help ease some of
the pressures of the day.
It would take quite a shift
in perception from players,
clubs and supporters knowing
there is now compensation
paid and it would create a
different expectation, but let’s
be honest, they get a hard time
anyway and it’s their time that
is being compensated not the
performance.
So while the All Blacks are
playing and we are between
Super Rugby and NPC/FPC,
head out to a club game and
if you pass one of the officials,
give them a word of thanks, not
criticism.
Mixed views on Robertson
after first game in charge
Star News Facebook
posters react to Bevan
Sisson’s column
last week on Scott
Robertson
Interesting opinions Bevan. I do
hope he wins every game too.
I think we all want the ABs to
beat every team into submission
– dreams are free. I think the
Boks are the team to beat. Rassie
has got this team humming and
I don’t think we have the cattle
to beat them, if you look at how
they dismantled the Irish on
weekend. However, if we can get
Will Jordan and Richie Mo’unga
back – they’re world class – look
out, Boks.
– Eddy Clark
Look how long Foster hung on
with all the losses he racked up,
safe to assume any coach is going
to be there for a while.
– David Wright
Pressure won’t change his
approach at all. But I have no
doubt his approach, his tactics and
his rugby rationale will change as
he identifies where those changes
are needed and what they should
look like. He will continue to learn
and grow as a coach, as he always
has.
– Bryan Searle
That is not by any stretch of the
imagination a good All Blacks
team. He has a long way to go.
– Paul Coyle
Hansen and Foster took us to
the RWC finals. Let’s see if this
dancing clown can get us through
the quarter-finals.
– George Tawhai
Razor knows what he’s doing.
All he has to do now is get Richie
back.
– Jocelyn Rowe
“Robertson has had the safety
of being a big fish in a very
small pond, with his coaching
success coming in a Super Rugby
competition that was greatly
weakened with the withdrawal of
the South African teams.” Can we
stop this lie? The first three titles
all came in a full competition.
– Matt Hurley
Given the Poms had six games
together and the ABs none, they
really should have beaten us well
and truly, but they didn’t. That
tells me that Razor is the man for
the job.
– Carl Pungaman
Yes the first three titles had South
African teams and an Argentina
side. As you know, his first Super
Rugby title win was the by far the
most difficult that any travelling
coach has ever had to face. He
faced a red hot Emirates Lions
side at Ellis Park 1800m above
sea level and his Crusaders won
convincingly. This was a very
weakened Crusaders with no
Richie McCaw or Dan Carter
and hadn’t won a single title
under Todd Blackadder.
– Deon Arioka
He better have. One
unconvincing singular point
win against a third rate English
side does not a star All Black
coach make. I’d like to remind
the media circus that we see no
reason to breakdance right at the
moment.
– Michael Loretz
WINNING START: Columnist Bevan Sisson wondered whether
the pressure of the All Blacks coaching role would change
Scott Robertson’s approach.
PHOTO: GETTY
Another thought provoking
article by Bevan Sisson, (July
11), this time on new All Black
coach Scott Robertson. It is
different being All Blacks coach
to coaching the Crusaders,
but one thing is sure, he will
continue to be himself. He is
authentic.
On the comments about his
success with the Crusaders:
While since 2020 South African
teams have not been involved,
the Crusaders under Razor won
their first title in Johannesburg
against the Lions in South
Africa, (obviously). Then
beat that same team here the
following year. Beating a South
African team on their home
turf was viewed by many as
mission impossible. Seven titles
with the Crusaders is enough
to justify a statue re the new
stadium.
– Graham Paterson
This article comes across as
sour grapes from the first
paragraph. There’s nothing
wrong with having a plan
and the drive to see it come
to fruition. Shouldn’t we give
credit where’s it’s due?
Sisson comes across as
petty and almost jealous of
ST MARGARET’S College
has made history a the South
Island secondary schools
junior netball tournament.
The school’s year 9 and
year 10 teams won their
competitions a the event – the
firs time a school had won
both in the same year.
Leanne Chambers, who
coaches the year 9 team and
coached the current year 10
team last year, said it was a
special moment for her and the
school.
“It was a pretty awesome
experience, seeing the hard
put in with me last year as
year 9s, not always seeing
the results, but seeing them
learn as netball players. For
them to come through and
win a tournament was
amazing.
“And then for my (year 9)
St Margaret’s netball and for
me personally.”
The tournament was held last
week at Ngā Puna Wai.
The year 10 team’s 36-30
triumph over Dunedin’s St
Hilda’s Collegiate was the first
Community board chair Emma
Norrish acknowledged the decision
had been a long time coming
for those living in Flockton St.
