THE STORY of THE WSA PATCH
Since 1995 hundreds of players have proudly adorned their WSA kits with the WSA patch worn over their left chest area of both their home and
away jersey. The patch may also be seen on bags, warm-ups, team flags and occasionally decorating cars and offices. One of the only clubs in
Oklahoma to identify themselves with a patch, WSA can claim uniqueness in that regard. So what is the “story behind the patch”?
In 1992 the WSA Soccer Club was formed and aside from the club’s name, the only identifying features of the club were the navy blue
Umbro uniforms. In 1995 the WSA 80 boys team had worn out their old Umbro unis and decided to purchase a new kit and to identify their
team’s name somewhere on the jersey. To identify their team as “WSA” the squad was left with the choice of a large screen print of “WSA”
across the chest, or a patch. Realizing most other Tulsa clubs used the screen print idea the team opted for the patch. The rest of the WSA club
followed and the patch was born. (Since then most clubs have copied our great idea ).
The patch design was developed at the kitchen table of current WSA Coaching Director, Roger Bush, where several of his WSA 80 boy’s
team members (and his sister, Catherine) met to discuss what they thought their club and team should represent. After some brainstorming the
group realized many of the ideals and principles they believed their club stood for, were similar to Christian principles and values. Thus, the
idea of the cross was born. However, the group agreed that it did not want to bear the Christian cross on their uniforms on the field of play. So
the cross came to represent the merging of the club’s four main principles (cornerstones): DISCIPLINE, SPORTSMANSHIP,UNITY, and
LOYALTY.
While WSA’s primary home and away colors were Navy and White the color gold (or yellow) was chosen to represent how important those
ideals were to the WSA philosophy and tradition. That they would “shine brightly” and be “reflected” in every WSA endeavor was an important
part of the choice of colors.
The patch color was chosen as red and became WSA’s secondary color. That the patch is oft worn over the left chest area, and that the
patch’s color is red, were both meant to demonstrate the importance of the heart of the WSA player. Family is a huge part of the WSA Club
concept, and the “blood” color of the patch is meant to remind us of the importance of the family, the community, the tradition we are a part
of. The heart is meant to be each player’s most important weapon he or she takes onto the field. The patch, resting near the heart, is a constant
reminder of that during competition.
The rest of the design of the badge, the shape and lettering, is similar to the 1994 Brazilian national team’s badge. The patch bears the
club’s complete name: West Side Alliance, at the top. The cross bears the club’s more common namesake: WSA. The writing around the patch
says, “Eastern Oklahoma Soccer” and the date of the club’s inception,“Est. 1992”. This qualifies WSA as being the “western” club representative
of “eastern” Oklahoma soccer.
5
The blue line separating the top and bottom part of the patch represent the river on whose banks WSA's home match and
training grounds were founded. The three peaks at the top of the patch represent the three main goals (pillars) of the WSA
program:
a) Perseverance -- Player Development
b) Achievement -- To always strive for Excellence, Our Best
c) Perspective -- To win with Humility and face defeat with Dignity
Words are not capable of characterizing all the patch represents. It stands for every battle waged by WSA in the club’s
history. It stands for every lesson learned, and every lesson taught. WSA teams are notorious for overachieving, and for
their “blue collar” like work ethic. The patch is a symbol of all the blood, sweat, and tears of the all the players who have
played for the club. The patch is a symbol of tradition, brotherhood and sisterhood that the WSA club is proud of. It is a
badge of courage, a badge of honor, and a badge of character.
Wear your patch proudly. And know that year’s from now, some young boy, or young girl, will also bear the emblem and
will strive to represent the club by the same ideals, principles, and values you cherished as a player.
The Difference He Made
Amidst the morning mist of the swift returning tide
I set out on my daily run, my walkman on my side.
Lost within my private world apart from cares and woes
I ran along the moistened shore, the sand between my toes.
In the distance, I saw a boy, as busy as can be.
He was running, stooping, picking up, and tossing in the sea.
Just what he threw, I couldn't tell, I looked as I drew near.
It seemed to be a rock or shell - as I approached him I could hear:
"Back you go, where you belong. Your safe now hurry home.
Your family's waiting for you little starfish, hurry on!"
It seemed the evening tide had washed the starfish on the shore,
And the swift receding water left a thousand there or more.
And this self-appointed savior, was trying one-by-one
To toss them back into the sea, against the racing sun.
I saw his plight was hopeless, that most of them would die.
I called out from my private world, "Hey Kid, why even try?"
"Must be at least a thousand here, strewn along the beach,
And even if you had the time, most you'll never reach.
You really think it makes a difference, to waste your time this way?"
And then I paused and waited, just to hear what he would say.
He stooped and took another, and looked me in the eye.
"It makes a difference to this one sir, this starfish will not die!"
With that, he tossed the little life, back where there was hope.
He stooped to take another. I could tell this was no joke.
The words that he spoke to me cut like a surgeon's knife.
Where I saw only numbers, he saw only life.
He didn't see the multitude of starfish on the sand.
He only saw the little life he held there in his hand.
He didn't stop to argue, to prove that he was right.
He just kept tossing starfish in the sea with all his might.
So I too stooped, and I picked up, and I tossed into the sea,
And I thought, just what a difference, that this boy has made in me.
MANAGER CHECKLIST: CRITICAL
TEAM FORMATION: Ensure all players are duly registered,
appear your team roster, and have passcards.
UNIFORMS: Players must order online.
BANKING: Team should have bank account set up w/ at least one
coach signor and one team parent signor.
TEAM BUDGET: Coach should collaborate with manager on
submitting the team “annual” budget.
TEAM CALENDAR: Team should have a schedule for the season,
and a tentative schedule for the year. Schedule will include all
training, games, and tournaments. League game schedule will
not be precisely known sometimes until July/August.
TEAM COMMUNICATION: Make sure all team members are
connected to the club/team communication app. Encourage all to
follow club socials. There is a “get connected” page under
PARENTS on WSASOCCER.ORG.
TEAM MEETING: Coach should establish 2 preseason meetings
to present budget, schedule, calendar. If you believe you need a
director at this meeting please alert your director.
MANAGER CHECKLIST: IMPORTANT
TEAM MANAGER WORKBOOK: Create a MANAGER’S BOOK to be
present at all games, which will contain the following:
OFFICIAL TEAM ROSTER
fundraising, game filming, and other team operation positions.
ORGANIZING & TRACKING TEAM FINANCES & PLAYER ACCOUNTS
USING EXCEL TO TRACK PLAYER ACCOUNTS EXAMPLE
TEAM BUDGET & TEAM ASSESSMENTS
SET TEAM ASSESSMENTS: 4 PER SEASON or MONTHLY
OBJECTIVE: Facility planning and coordinating for team leaders.
Streamline collections for team. Ease communication between
manager and parents.
GOAL: Create less collections “per season”. Reduce “per event”
collections. Reduce payables for parents, enhance budgeting.
This method shows ACTUAL TEAM expenses and what you
ACTUALLY COLLECTED from each player. You tell at a glance what
each player still owes and see each player’s overall balance.
HINT: OVER COLLECT slightly (10%) throughout
the year, to create a cushion to cover time
sensitive expenses, and cover for late payers.
“Frugality includes
all other virtues.”
- Cicero
OUTCOME: More money in team account at all times means
meeting payment deadlines is easier.
KEY: Collection Due Date MUST meet all DEADLINES for entry
fees for events.
13
I. Team Budget - DUE AUG 1 - every team!
Submit within team onboard process.
Must use club’s budget workbook (see sample).
II. Must be finalized & approved by Head Coach.
III. Includes ALL FORECASTED expenses.
IV. WSA Team Budget Contents (see sample to right)
V. Calculate PER PLAYER (use 85% of roster size)
If 18 players calculate cost by 15 players, etc.
Round up to nearest $5 increment
EX: If tournament entry fee is $550 divided by 15 =
$40/player
VI. POLICY: All players are responsible for 100% of
the team budget. Their contribution is NOT
contingent on participation.
14
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
Largest such program in the Midwestern U.S.
Coordinator: WSA Board & Finance Committee
PLEASE KEEP THIS INFORMATION CONFIDENTIAL. Some players will have “reduced fees” that have been “approved” by the WSA Financial
Assistance Committee. These fees MUST be remitted timely and in full each month. The player account information should not be shared with
the team. The team should know that the club is supporting some of the team’s expected expenses on behalf of players.
WHAT IS NOT COVERED BY WSA FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE:
Team Fees (i.e. tournament entry fees, ref fees, coach travel expesnes, etc)
Registration Fee (annual fee)
Tournament Fees, including Hotel, Travel and Food
Player Uniform Fee
WHERE THE $ COMES FROM:
Volunteer based and club wide fundraisers
Coach’s and Club Directors working for reduced pay (across the board)
Generous contributions (often of parents on the team).
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where
moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and
steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in Heaven,
where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves
do not break in and steal.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
WHERE THE MONEY DOES NOT COME FROM
Money does NOT come from the contributions of paying players
Annual Membership Fees. EVERY player (paying or financial assistance) contributes equally to the financial assistance program through the
annual registration fee ($50-$100 per player pending player’s club program).
COACH’S COMMITMENT TO “NO PLAYER TURNED AWAY FOR FINANCIAL NEED”
Coach’s may forfeit pay for any player not paying their share of the agreed upon amount
Coach’s will be provide minimum of 2 monthly pay cycles to communicate w/ WSA Executive Council
IF YOU ALWAYS GIVE,
YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE.
MANAGERS ROLE
Attempt collections from team families (if you are not successful we can help – if you are negligent you are responsible for affecting your
team’s debt)
COMMUNICATE – even though this is a volunteer job the obligation, duty, and responsibility of communicating the payment records to the
coach and club is not reduced in standard or expectation. MANAGERS MUST COMMUNICATE DETAILS OF COLLECTIONS MONTHLY.
TRAINING REQUEST MUST BE SUBMITTED BY TEAM DURING ONBOARDING
SCHEDULE & MAP WSASOCCER.ORG HOMEPAGE
PRIORITIES & CONTEXT FOR TRAINING SCHEDULE:
About 80% of the teams request Mon/Thurs at 530 PM. We will create a 2-phased
schedule providing 530 PM slots to half of the teams, and 700 PM time slots to
teams for 6 week Phases. We will also provide alternatives and potential other
opportunities for teams to rotate if those teams must keep the 500/530 PM slot.
Our priorities in making determinations of team requests
are listed below in order:
1. Teams sharing a coach. If a coach has multiple teams the coaches sessions must
be scheduled "back-to-back" so that all athletes receive proper attention from the
coach. Note that is NOT punishing a team whose coach does not have multiple
teams, but advocating for athletes who have a coach with shared responsibilities.
Part of being in a community includes sacrifice and compromise.
2. Age of team. Youth teams aged U6-U10 will receive first priority for earlier time
slots.
3. Space Requirements. Some of our older teams have combined teams to help
conserve space. For example, and almost exclusively, in our U15-U19 teams, the
periodization schedule lightens during the Spring, and teams begin to combine
sessions. Since these player have reduced opportunity with their club teams, due
to high school soccer conflicts, the one session per week, in a combined setting,
becomes a high priority to schedule around and within the context of the athlete's
busy high school schedule. This priority is in effect Jan 15 thru April 15 to help
ensure these teams remain connected to "each other" and in "form" for the
athletes competition schedules during this time.
TRAINING NIGHT RULES of THUMB:
1. Safety is a non-negotiable part of the WSA Way Game Model.
Abide by all weather alerts and directives, as well as all goal
safety practices.
2. Abide by your assigned location, field #, field space, time.
3. Reminder that if you are scheduled 530-700 PM and begin at
600 PM and intend to end at 730 PM, contact the team coach
scheduled for 700 PM seeking a coordinated plan for the 30
minute overlap from 700-730 PM (when your team is ending and
the next team is beginning).
4. If you CANCEL a SESSION please CANCEL on BOOK-A-FIELD.
This helps others know that the field is available. Need a book-afield
account - click here. Each time we transition from one
"phase to another phase", the Book-A-Field info will lag behind by
about one week as we udpate it.
5. Do NOT move goals. West Bank Sports Complex: The current
allocation of goals allows for 2-3 goals "per field".
17
REFEREES: FEES & EXPECATIONS
“The trouble with referees is they just don’t care which side wins.”
REFEREE FEES: Know your league policy for paying referee fees. Referee rates are posted on WSASOCCER.ORG under REFEREES.
Referee Fees are NOT included in your OPC, NPL, ACS, RL league fees. If paying a referee cash be sure to pay at least 30 minutes prior
to kickoff. Thank the referee for being there. Do NOT make any cynical commentary about payment. NEVER withhold payment.
HOW TO FIGURE PLAYER PORTION:
Find the referee pay rates for your league and age division. Multiply total ref pay for a single game by 6 games/season or 12/year.
Divide that amount by the # of players. I.E. 11U Boys, ref pay is $50 Center, $25 AR X 2 = $100. $100 x 6 GAMES = $600 / 13 players =
$46.15 plus $5 = $51.15. This is auto-computed in your TEAM BUDGET WORKBOOK.
GAME CANCELLATIONS:
PLEASE REMEMBER RESCHEDULES ARE NOT ALLOWED. THE ONLY EXCEPTION will be if the fields are closed due to weather/field
conditions. The consequence of not abiding by this rule is that your team will be responsible for paying the referee fees for late
cancellations.
REFEREEE TREATMENT/SIDELINE BEHAVIOR: THE WSA WAY
All players, coaches, and parents will have signed the Sideline Code of Conduct. Expect WSA to enforce this code of conduct. We do
expect team managers to assume leadership of their parents for sideline conduct. We do expect team managers to hold club
leadership accountable for proper education, support and modeling for proper sideline conduct.
REFEREE INCIDENT REPORT:
At WSASOCCER.ORG under “referees” there is an evaluation form for referees – you can report extraordinary work via this form -
either positive or negative – and we will communicate this to our referee assignors. This form is available to all parents and coaches.
REFEREE CERTIFICATION ENCOURAGED:
Each WSA team is requested to send one candidate to the Referee Course per season. We are in need of a home-based pool of
referees to keep up with our expanding membership! PLEASE HELP US PROMOTE THESE COURSES throughout the year!
HELPING MY TEAM’S
COLLEGE SEARCH
1. Work with club coach on outlining a “Showcase” Tournament Schedule and agenda
i. Fundraising for the events is critical
ii. Travel arrangements
iii. Making CERTAIN that ALL players contact schools 15-20 days before departure w/ multiple follow-ups closer to date
2. Create Your Team Profile Booklet (see examples provided)
i. Keep in mind “easier” is better for college coach
ii. Anything to make your booklet standout is good
iii. Profile Booklet should be “Professional” – pay the extra $$$ to produce a “professional” and
“serious” looking brochure - ALWAYS COLOR COPIES
3. On Game Day Find College Coaches and Hand Deliver the Team Profile Booklet
i. Greet the college coach briefly and offer the booklet
ii. College coaches are NOT allowed to speak to parents or players or it counts as an NCAA “contact”
so coach will keep conversation non-specific not to be rude – to follow rules
iii. Be nice and cordial – you want coach to remember your team
4. Make sure Team Profile Booklet is UPDATED
i. Pictures of ALL players
ii. Players already Verbally Committed are NOTED (and which college) iii. All GUEST PLAYERS are listed
iv. All JERSEY NUMBERS ARE CORRECT!
v. All players Graduation Dates are listed and correct
vi. Contact info on team coach and players – email addresses – provided!
5. Keep Record of All Schools Who Have Watched Your Team Play – Date, Tournament, School, Coach Name
i. Keep a record log of all the coaches who have watched your team play
ii. Follow up and encourage players to “follow up” with all coaches who came to watch them play
6. Be the ADVOCATE for your team’s PLAYERS to FOLLOW THE ACTION PLAN oF SELF- PROMOTION
A FEW CLUB POLICIES
FUN POLICY: Have a great time! We are blessed and fortunate to be able to serve. Serve
selflessly. Live honorably. Help others enjoy their time!
SCRIMMAGE POLICY: No scrimmages on Thursday evenings, August 1 - May 1, due to training. May 1- July 20, State and Regional
Tournament promoted teams take precedence on scheduling.
LIGHTNING POLICY: Obey the command of the club official who closes facilities. We know it’s frustrating, we know the session or
game is important. Your safety is something we care about!
FIELD CLOSURE POLICY: We dedicate about an hour of many days in correspondence on weather forecasts using radar, etc. We
attempt to make decisions before 3 p.m. for the convenience of all. Sometimes we might get one wrong - fields closed and the sun
comes through! We expect all to support and abide by the authority of the facility managers.
UNIFORM POLICY: Wear the club uniforms for each match. Do not deviate. Make certain all players are in their kits. Use club
“outerwear” as “pre match” attire. Be professional. It will enhance club pride, and sense of belonging - important aspects of youth
sports experience.
CLUB LOGO USE POLICY: You must require permission to use the club logo in print or on apparel.
YOUR OWN APPAREL POLICY: It is a great idea. And it is not permissible. To UNIFY and STRENGTHEN our brotherhood and
sisterhood we must be intolerant to certain thresholds of individualism to honor and sanctify team unity.
TRASH POLICY: Pick yours up. Pick other’s trash up. We appreciate it. If we haven’t located a canister near your field we appreciate
you taking your trash with you.
PLAYER TRANSFER POLICY: Any requests of this nature must first be approved by the team coach. All of the players’ “team” and
“club” fees must be current, and all future fees paid. The WSA board will serve as final authority on player releases, and will act under
advisement of the team coach. The “best interest of the player” will NEVER supersede that of the “team”, and the interest of “every”
player is our interest as a club. Once joining WSA, you have given up certain individual privileges for the sake of responsibility to
“team”. We will always HONOR that which is bigger than our “self”, and we will do this in a “player-centered” manner.
CONDUCT POLICY: All WSA parents, players, coaches are expected to abide by the Code of Conduct. This will be taken seriously and
the privilege of game day and training day participation and spectatorship is only granted by abiding by this agreement. Those noncompliant
will be removed from the game or training environment, and then will meet with a club leader before reentering the
environment.
Dear God. Thanks for this beautiful life. And forgive
me if sometimes it seems if I don’t love it enough. 27
RISK MANAGEMENT
FOR GAMES & TRAINING
Know Your Facility!
Know your facility safe places,
evacuation routes, policies, etc.
WEATHER EVACUATION
ONE LONG AIR HORN BLAST - see immediate shelter in cars or buildings. Site coordinators will communicate on site and/or text
communications to indicate to team leaders if the facility is to be evacuated, or if it is a “delay”. Most delays require 15-30 minutes of
“all clear” for weather, lightning, etc. If it is a delay, during and throughout the delay all players and staff are REQUIRED to be in cars -
NO EXCEPTIONS. Those violating will lose facility privileges per Roger.
TORNADO SHELTER - know your facilities tornado shelter areas if evacuation is not permissible.
GOAL SAFETY
ANCHOR - all goals should be anchored at all times. Use of counter weights or sandbags should be employed. Goals should be placed
on their face when/if not anchored.
GOAL STORAGE -
Flat Faced Goals should be returned to their storage area at the end of the session. If you see a goal left out after training because a
coach was busy or distracted please remind coach to return the goal, or grab a couple of parents to get the job done.
Full Sized Goals should be stored on their “face” when not in use and at the end of a session.
WIND ALERTS - If you receive a “high winds alert” text message this may mean portable goals are off limits for training that night. In this
case all goals should be placed on their “face” and should not be used.
