1969 GTO
Car owner: Jim Elliot
Car: 1969 Pontiac GTO
Jim owns this near mint condition 1969 Pontiac GTO convertible that we shot in the Crossroads
District in Kansas City, MO.
This iconic car features a 350 HP V8 @ 5100 RPM with a Rochester 4-barrel carburetor
that has 445 lb-ft of torque @ 300 RPM. It has a 3-speed automatic transmission, 4 wheel disc
brakes, dual exhaust and 411 POSI Track rear end. Jim added a mild cam and exhaust dumps. His
goal has been to keep it as original as possible.
He purchased the car from its previous owner in Overland Park, KS who owned it for
about 14 years. That owner purchased the GTO from someone who had a rotisserie restoration
done on it in 2006. This car spent most of its time in the previous owners garage, which
meant that Jim had to do some work on it due to it not being driven much. The GTO was
sold brand new in the KC metro area back in 1969 at Andy Klein Pontiac in Overland, Park,
KS. In fact for the last 55 years this car has never had an owner that lived outside of the KC
metro area.
Jim likes the fact that his GTO has always been a local car and that it still has all of its
original components. He commented, “since it is not a Judge style GTO, I can drive it more
often without the fear of damaging a car possibly worth an obscene amount of money!” He
says the reason he likes going to car shows is to hang out with his friends while getting to see
different cars and to see what people have done with them. “Mostly it’s about the great people
in the car community.”
He attends up to 16 car related events per year. Some annual events include the Ottawa,
KS car show in September, the Shawnee Mission Park Car Show that benefits the Special
Olympics and other events that support charities.
Jim also likes to fish and travel mostly in the U.S. but sometimes he likes to take trips
to Mexico and the Carribbean. He is planning to take a trip to England. He said that if
money were no object the car he would buy is a 1968 Ford Mustang GT 390 Fastback like
the one in the Classic Steve McQueen movie “Bullitt”which was released in 1968. This is
the movie that kicked off genre of the classic dramatic car chase scenes that have since been a
Hollywood movie staple to this day. (You’re welcome Fast and the Furious!) Jim also wants
a 1966 Ford GT 40 Like the ones in the movie Ford vs Ferrari. Lastly, Jim wants to give a
Shout Out to “The usual Suspect buddies” that he hangs around with.
1978 TRANS AM
Car owner: Brent Klusman
Car: 1978 Pontiac Trans Am SE (Smokey and the Bandit Edition)
Brent Klusman is the proud owner of this beautiful 1978 Pontiac Trans AM that we shot in front of
a recently painted Mural at the Northern base of the Forrester Rd bridge in the KC West Bottoms
area.
Brent’s Pontiac Trans AM in black is powered by a 6.6 Litre 400cu V8 engine with a shaker
on a 4-barrel carburetor that produces 220 HP @ 4000 RPM. It has a 4-speed manual transmission,
dual exhaust and a POSI Traction rear end. The Trans AM sports a T-top roof, dual head
lamps with a cross hatch grill, 15” snowflake pattern rims and 15” BF Goodrich T/A tires as well as
that iconic golden firebird emblem on the hood.
Brent purchased the car in 1983 from a guy who worked in the oil fields of Oklaohoma.
Brent had wanted this car since he was in high school after seeing the movie Smokey and the Bandit
back in 1977. It was his daily driver then and is still driven. As Brent puts it, “its not a trailer
queen.” In the summer of 1985, Brent and a buddy took a road trip to California for a two week
excursion driving the Southern route through New Mexico and Arizona sight seeing on their way
to San Diego. While at a San Diego bar with his buddy, Brent heard his name being called. As
it turned out, an old high school acquaintance the Brent had not seen in over 2 years at the time
recognized him from across the bar. He was in the Navy and stationed in San Diego. That chance
meeting turned out to be a fateful reunion that night since his high school acquaintance was murdered
in a carjacking incident in San Diego about one year later. Brent commented, “the weird
thing is I kept thinking what stars had to align for two guys from the Midwest to reunite by pure
chance at a bar in California when we had not seen each other in over two years?”
He got into showing his car when he saw some advertisements on Facebook for a fund raiser
for a kid who had passed away. So he went to the fund raiser to support the cause and was surprised
at how much attention his car was getting. He then started doing shows and won some awards.
Later he started showing the car more regularly. “It is amazing how popular the car is and how
many people remember this car from the movie (Smokey and the Bandit).” “People talk about how
this is the car that they always wanted!” “I try to keep some small miniatures of the car in my trunk
and if the kids are really interested in the car I will give them a miniature to take home to play with.”
Brent attends up to 10 shows annually, local and small town shows . Some of the shows Brent attends
regularly are Rev It Up in Lawrence, KS in the fall, the Paola Car Show and the Heartland
Car Show.
Brent’s hobbies include wood working and traveling in his RV. If money was no object
Brent says he would buy a bright Red Lamborghini Countach and the Munsters Koach from the
1964 TV show. He would like to give a shout out to his late father Ernest who bought a new bright
red 1979 Trans AM when he was a kid and to his late father in law Don who later helped Brent repaint
the car as a gift to for his dad.
1971 Chevelle SS
Car owner: Jim Flack
Car: 1971 Chevy Chevelle SS
We shot this beautiful 1971 Chevelle SS owned by Jim Flack at E.H. Young Park in
Riverside, MO on the banks of the Missouri River near the Argosy Casino.
This iconic muscle car sports a 7.4 L 454cu V8 engine with a 4 barrel Edelbrock carburetor.
The engine produces 312 KW, 425 HP @ 5600 RPM with a 3-speed automatic transmission,
dual exhaust, and a Cowl Induction hood, with a POSI Track rear end. Though
allot of the car is still in its original condition, some modifications include a chrome air
cleaner, chrome valve covers, a digital dash, a classic looking bluetooth radio with 5 speakers,
a USB port, as well as 17” Foost Legend wheels and 17” Nitto 555 G2 tires. The car is
painted in classic black with white stripes. With it’s sleek profile and wicked stance to me it
looks like a car that is straight out of a “John Wick” movie action scene. When asked about if
he would make any additional mods to the car, Jim said that he would like to add fuel injection
to the engine.
Jim purchased the Chevelle from the owner of the company he used to work for who
purchased it from someone sight unseen.1 When it was delivered, his boss was not impressed
by the condition it was in, so Jim reached out to his brother who then restored the
car. Once restored, Jim’s boss kept it for a year then sold it to Jim who has owned the car for
the past 13 years.
Jim has always liked cars. A friend of his invited Jim to hangout with his friend who
owned a hot rod shop where a group of guys would get together with their cars, grill some
burgers and talk about cars. They called themselves “The Roosters.” The first show that Jim
took his car to was in Clinton, MO. There he won a handful of awards such as best engine,
best paint, etc. After watching him win the awards, they agreed that they would never be
able to get rid of him now. Jim attends at least 10 shows per season. Some of the annual
shows he attends are in Springfield, MO, Salina, KS, Ottawa, KS, Smithville, MO, Gower,
MO and Pattonsburg, MO. Jim commented, “I’m proud of the car, I like the way it looks.”
“It’s fun to see everybody’s cars and talk to people who have similar cars and hot rods of all
kinds.” “That’s what car shows are all about, meeting new people.”
Some hobbies he enjoys is Golf as well as formerly playing guitar in a band. One thing
is for certain. Jim’s Chevelle truly represents the golden era of pure american muscle cars.
BUMBLE BEE
Car owner: Ken Lee
Car: 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28
Car Name: “Bumble Bee”
Ken is the owner of this awesome Chevy Camaro Z/28 that is still in its original condition.
This Camaro has a 302cu Turbo V8 engine with a 4-barrel carburetor that delivers 290 HP
@ 5800 RPM. The Cowl Induction hood allows for a cold air intake into the engine that
helps to boost horsepower. It has a 4-speed manual Hurst shifter, dual exhaust, a POSI Traction
rear end with 14” Rally wheels and 14” BF Goodrich tires.
This car has won numerous awards including being the 5 time winner of the AACA
(Antique Automobile Club of America) Preservation Award. Ken is the 2nd owner of this
Camaro. In an ironic twist it turns out that both Ken and the original owner of this car are
from the Independence, MO area. He bought it from a high school friend that purchased
the car after he got out of the military. Ken had been wanting this car for quite a while and
his friend was aware of his interest in buying it One day his friend called Ken and told him
that he was ready to sell the Z/28. Ken quickly seized on the opportunity and made the
purchase. The sale made him both excited and yet he felt a bit sheepish about buying the car
since usually he and his wife Trish usually discuss purchases like this ahead of time. Trish
had seen the car before and knew that Ken wanted it. When Ken informed Trish that he had
bought the car, Trish paused and then replied, “well that was a no brainer.” Ken has owned
the car for 8 years.
Ken is very competitive with his cars and has competed for many years. He likes to
compete on a national level. He tries to make annual trips to the Carthage, MO Maple Leaf
Festival and car show. He commented, “When you bought a Camaro from Chevrolet you
bought a race car.” “People can’t believe this Z/28 has survived for more than 50 years in its
original condition.” “ It’s fun to drive.” “ The acceleration time is so fast you had better have
you hand on the shifter!” It is a very unique car for it’s era.”
Ken’s hobbies include landscaping and travel. Ken’s other showcar is a 1965 black corvette
Coupe named “Tuxedo” that is featured on the cover of EPMSC issue 16.
If money were no object, Ken says that he would buy a 1965 Corvette Coupe in Nassau Blue
with blue interior.
Ken would like to give a shout out to his wife Trish as they have celebrated 54 years of
marriage. “She has been very supportive of my love of cars and of the car clubs that I started
and participated in since 1974.” “ Cars and car shows are our family hobby.”
1987 MONTE CARLO SS
Car owner: Sean Iles
Car: 1987 Chevy Monte Carlo SS
We did this shoot with Sean Ile’s impressive 1987 Chevy Monte Carlo SS in the Crossroads
District near downtown Kansas City, MO.
The original 305cu engine in the “87 Monte” was replaced by a 5.7 litre 350cu V8 bored over
40 which produces 400 HP @ 6000 RPM. It has a 4-barrel carburetor, 4-speed automatic transmission
and 4 wheel Air-Ride suspension. The car has dual exhaust with Glass Packs as well as 17”
wheels and tires. Sean is considering adding fuel injection to the engine.
Sean has owned the Monte Carlo for around 13 years. He purchased it for $4,000 from the
previous owner who lived in Cassville, MO near the Arkansas border.
Sean has wanted a car like this since he was 16 years old. The car was originally purchased new from
Quality Chevrolet in Wichita, KS. The car currently has 108K miles on it so far.
He likes the following that this edition of Chevy Monte Carlo has. Most everyone who has
commented on the car says that they either had a car like this or knew somebody that had one back
in their high school days. “It’s my cruising car.” Sean enjoys the appreciation that people have for
the car as well as having an understanding of the time, work and money that has been put into rebuilding
this vehicle.
Sean has been a car person since he was a little. His mother was a car person. She had a 1970
Chevy Nova SS back in the day. His uncles had Camaros and Chevelles. Back then Sean aspired
to be a car designer when he grew up. When he was younger as Sean puts it he was “bitten by the
Speed Bug.” He had a 1999 Hyundai Accent and he competed in street racing. As Sean got older
he wanted something more stylish and something that he could make his own. Sean commented,
“You see allot of Monte Carlo SS’s in black.” “ You don’t see many in white.”
Sean says that he didn’t start showing the car until about 8 years after he purchased it. He won his
