Kinesiology
Every Fall and Spring semester, TWU Kinesiology students participate
in the Texas Space Grant Consortium Design Challenge sponsored
by NASA.
The Fall 2023 all-female team, dubbed Team Atlas, took the top overall
prize with its exercise device aimed at reducing muscle deterioration
that occurs in astronauts, especially in the lower body, in microgravity.
To address this lower limb atrophy, the TWU team built a working
prototype for both resistance and aerobic exercise that targeted
lower-body muscles.

Network, serve the community or share a hobby
with Pioneers like you. Whether it’s a sorority or
fraternity, support group for veterans, or finding
your new bestie in knitting club (yes, knitting),
more than 140 groups let you discover who
you are.
Cooking the Books
Honors student Alexandra Mack, a May
2024 nutrition and dietetics graduate,
developed a free cookbook for students
as part of her capstone research project.
What makes Mack’s cookbook unique
is the majority of the recipe ingredients
can be found at Minerva’s Market, a free,
on-campus food pantry. There’s also two
versions — recipes that can be prepared
in a traditional kitchen and another
where the recipes have been adapted for
students who typically only have access
to microwaves.
An Enduring Inspiration
A historic building on Denton’s
campus got a facelift after students in
TWU’s Visual Arts mural class painted
an inspirational and colorful work of
art stretching 17 feet along the side the
structure. The mural celebrates the
university’s diverse student body and
honors the university’s traditions and
iconic campus landmarks.
Going for Gold
As a freshman, Maya Schwickert is
already a champion artistic swimmer,
award-winning chemistry student,
and accomplished mathematician. She
was one of the top artistic swimming
prospects in the nation with her pick
of programs and chose TWU. In the
classroom, Schwickert works with
green scientist Dr. Nasrin Mirsaleh-Kohan
in the chemistry labs, but while in
practice, she has her eyes set on the
artistic swimming U.S. Collegiate
Championships gold medal.

Poland
Texas Woman’s may be nestled in the

globe. From study abroad to research,

Guatemala
Theodore Fields III combined his
passions for traveling and service
with a tailor-made trip to Antigua,
Guatemala. The dual MBA/MHA
student helped create and improve
procedures at Casa Jackson Hospital
for Malnourished Children. The
hospital has helped more than 2,000
children recover from malnutrition
and starvation.
Peru
TWU nursing students shared
clinical rotations and presentations
on current nursing practice with
Peruvian nurses and students. Dr.
Tuong-Vi Ho said the trip expanded
the world view and nursing
philosophy of her students while
they did the same for students at
Universidad Maria Auxiliadora,
nurses at Hospital Nacional Sergio
E. Bernales and Vidawasi Children’s
hospital, and citizens at a health fair
in San Juan de Lurigancho.
The war in Ukraine has displaced millions
of refugees into Poland — mostly women
and children. The children still need to learn
and still need teachers. In a partnership with
a Fulbright Scholar from Poland, Dr. Mandy
Stewart and her Literacy & Learning
students are providing biliteracy online
professional development and innovative
research to teachers of refugees.
Brazil
A team trip to Brazil proved to be a
unique opportunity to experience a
new culture and serve the community
for the Pioneer volleyball team. The
team visited São Paulo and Rio de
Janeiro, where they scrimmaged
against local teams and immersed
themselves in the culture of the home
country for two of their teammates.

Each year, Remy Odukomaiya’s Mass
Production Techniques class pushes
the boundaries of fashion. The 2023
class crafted clothing for children in
prolonged hospital treatment and
encumbered by medical traction
equipment.
Not the stuff of runway shows but
a lot more rewarding. The project
required a fundamental shift in the
design, patterning and assembly
process for the garments to fit over
the halo traction equipment often
worn throughout the day for months.
More than 15 garments designed
around the physical restrictions of
scoliosis patients were presented to
patients and their parents at Scottish
Rite for Children in Dallas.

Nari Miller
BBA in Management
TWU Wrestling Teammate
When Nari Miller joined her high
school wrestling team, there was no
women’s league. Nari wrestled against
men for much of her high school
career, working to prove women
belonged on the mat. She now
wrestles for TWU.
