Piping hot incentive
• By Dylan Smits
FILL A BUCKET with rubbish
from the beach and claim a free
coffee until springtime.
That’s the offer from Beach Bar
in Sumner, as it extends Plastic
Free July into August.
“We’re just trying to give back
little a bit to the community and
keep the beaches clean, and just
get some good karma out there,”
said manager Erin Walker.
Participants can collect a bucket
from the bar at 25 Esplanade and
once full, return it to the counter
for a free coffee.
Walker hopes more people will
take part after a rainy few weeks.
“When the weather’s nice, we
definitely have a lot of people that
are keen to get involved. So that’s
really cool,” she said.
People are encouraged to bring
rubbish in from Sumner to Scarborough.
The scheme has been running
since June and the bar has received
more than 30 buckets of
rubbish so far.
Plastic Free July is a global
initiative encouraging people to
stop using single-use plastics.
URBAN EXPLORERS have been
climbing down a cliff face in
Lyttelton to access a World War 2
tunnel system.
But authorities are trying to
stop them, because they fear
someone will fall. The tunnels are
also on restricted Lyttelton Port
Company land.
Urban exploring is a worldwide
hobby with groups like Urbex
New Zealand investigating abandoned
buildings and structures.
Urbex members made an
impact by going into the earthquake-damaged
Christ Church
Cathedral in 2014, sparking
outrage, with photos showing the
deteriorating building’s interior.
The groups have also visited
derelict film sets and Ripapa
Island while it was closed in 2016,
taking photos at the island’s
heritage sites, the pā, a quarantine
station and a prison.
The people going into the caves
below Sumner Rd have posted a
video on TikTok.
Police and Customs have
increased patrols on Sumner
SUMNER volunteer firefighters
are now on the frontline of
medical emergency responses to
relieve pressure on St John.
Chief fire officer Daryl Sayer
said 18 brigade members have
signed up for the fire first response
unit after training.
“It’s great to see the brigade
members actually do something
different together. It’s really
good team-building.”
The brigade covers from
Redcliffs to Taylors Mistake.
St John operations
manager
Sam Kellick said
it was a positive
move.
“Responses
into Sumner
can sometimes
Daryl Sayer
be challenging,
especially in
summer when
the population swells and traffic
flow is slow, or when one of the
two routes into Sumner are shut
due to road works.”
Over the past few months,
firefighters have been training to
reach a base ambulance clinical
level, meaning they can assess
and treat patients until an ambulance
arrives.
The firefighters completed
their training on Sunday with
St John staff at the Sumner Fire
Station.
Deputy fire officer Dan Ohs,
who is also ambulance operations
deputy chief executive,
to medical emergencies
helped co-ordinate the training.
Sayer said the firefighters will
“see things they haven’t seen
before” and will receive support
after distressing medical responses.
He said the volunteers are due
to start attending medical events
over the next few weeks.
station, with a dedicated and
passionate team who wanted
to provide more help to their
community”.
MOORING GIVEN UP
Only one renter of an Akaroa
Harbour mooring has given up
their space after Environment
Canterbury put out the call last
month. Owners of underused
moorings are being asked to
relinquish their spot ahead of
the main wharf upgrade when
there will be less moorings
available in the harbour. An
ECan spokesperson said the
harbourmaster is still reluctant
to take back any underused
THE CITY council is calling
Lyttelton Harbour.
It is inspecting the stormwater
network in Corsair Bay, Cass
Church Bay to identify potential
Said city council acting head
of three waters Gavin Hutchison:
“From leaking septic tanks, damaged
pipes, wastewater overflows,
private cross connections and
freedom camping, there are so
many potential sources.
“We’re keen to hear from the
public if they know of any issues
so keep your eyes peeled
when you’re out and about in the
Stories from the men and women who built, serviced and
flew aircraft in WWII
When we remember the Second World
War in the air, we think of fighter pilots and
bomber crews. But what was it like for the
men and women working as ground crew
and in the aircraft factories who also played
a crucial role in defeating Hitler? What was
it like making history? What sense did these
individuals have of what they were doing,
either at the time or later? Did they feel they
were caught up in the tide of great events? Or
were they simply doing their demanding and
often dangerous duty? Originally published
The Leftover Woman By Jean Kwok
‘I will find my daughter. No matter the cost...’ Jasmine
Yang thought her daughter was dead at birth. But five
years after she was taken from her arms, she learns that
her controlling husband sent the baby to America to be
adopted, a casualty of China’s one-child-policy. Fleeing
her rural Chinese village, Jasmine arrives in New York
City with nothing except a desperate need to find her
daughter. But with her husband on her trail, the clock
is ticking, and she’s forced to make increasingly risky
decisions if she ever hopes to be reunited with her child.
Meanwhile, Rebecca Whitney seems to have it all: a highpowered
career, a beautiful home, a handsome husband
and an adopted Chinese daughter she adores. But when
an industry scandal threatens to jeopardise not only
Rebecca’s job but her marriage, this perfect world begins
to crumble. Two women in a divided city, separated by
wealth and culture, yet bound together by their love for
the same child. And when they finally meet, their lives
The future is in good hands. . .
MEET THE recipients of
the Sumner Ferrymead
Foundation’s Scholarships
amd Awards Programme and
you leave with the feeling that
despite all the doom and gloom
in the media, the future is
actually in good hands.
When you chat to them,
they all have a clear picture as
to what they want to achieve,
are socially aware, and have a
strong focus on giving back to
their communities.
With the financial challenges
that students face – university
fees, rent, unpaid work
experience, cost of tools etc – all
are greatly appreciative of the
scholarship or award they have
received.
• Ben Isles is the recipient of
the Science Scholarship, which
is sponsored
by a Redcliffs
resident,
majoring in
geography and
a minor in
sports science.
He would
like to work
in the field using the
Geographic Information
System skills that he is
currently studying. Ben is keen
to continue developing his
leadership skills so he can be
actively involved with surf life
saving at a club, community
and/or national level, whether
it be as a lifeguard, competitor
and/or young leader nurturing
others to reach their potential.
• Rupert Shepherd is the
recipient of the Humanities
Scholarship,
sponsored
in memory
of Richard
Brinkman, and
is majoring in
product design.
His five year
goal is to be
working in the product design
industry either for a company or
freelancing.
• Tilly Pritchard, the
recipient of the Health Sciences
Scholarship, sponsored by
RJ Begg & Associates, and is
majoring in neuroscience and
psychology.
She is aiming
to complete
her Master’s
by 2025/2026,
with the overall
goal of gaining
a PhD in
neuroscience
and become a neuroscientist.
Fast forward five years, and
Tilly hopes to be working in a
laboratory conducting her own
research in a specialist field
associated with neuroscience. In
her spare time Tilly volunteers,
teaching English as a second
language to migrants and
refugees to help them settle in
their new lives in Dunedin.
• The Seed Ladies are the
recipient of the Environment
Award which is sponsored by
a Sumner resident. The focus
of their group is many-fold. It
began with a wish to give back
to Papatuanuku/Nature, to
further advance the evolving
work of the ‘Te Awa Kura
Barnett Park Regreening Group’
whilst assisting Christchurch
City Council rangers. They aim
to involve as many members of
the community as they can. To
achieve their five year goal of
seeing their own plants thriving
in the valley and in other areas
along the Port Hills, they need
to have a continued consistent
team dedicated to each stage of
the project.
• Cara Brignull is the
recipient of the Outward Bound
Scholarship, funded in memory
of the foundation’s past patron,
Allan Williams. Cara is a year
13 student at Marian College.
Ask her to visualise what she
will be doing
in five years’
time, and she
says: “I will have
just returned
after attending
university
with a rowing
scholarship. I
would like to be building upon
the foundation I’ve created
through my rowing and
academic study in America.
Ideally, I envision myself as a
well-educated, highly skilled,
and competitive rower, ready
to take on new challenges and
opportunities.”
• Sam Price is the recipient
of the Apprentice Award,
sponsored by
Laser Plumbing
Christchurch
East. He is
an apprentice
drainlayer, and
in five years’
time he would
like to be a
foreman for
drainage company.
Sarah Angelo is a former
recipient of the Humanities
Scholarship and now a trustee
of the Sumner Ferrymead
Foundation.
By becoming a trustee Sarah
feels she can ‘pay it forward’ as the
scholarship offered more than just
financial benefits.
This year she was one of the
three trustees who reviewed and
shortlisted the applications, and
then interviewed the shortlisted
candidates alongside two other
trustees.
“They were an impressive
bunch so it required a lot of
thought and active discussion to
determine the final recipients.
Having been through the process
myself, I felt for them!”
The Sumner Ferrymead
Foundation is especially
grateful to the sponsors – local
residents and businesses - of
the Scholarships & Awards
Programme.
“Without their support this
annual programme would not
be possible,” said Martin Hawes,
foundation chair.
“We are always open to ideas
for new awards and scholarships,
and are keen to hear from
potential sponsors.
“The foundation’s programme
provides a simple opportunity
for locals to help their local
community.”
