Huts residents may get extra consultation time

UPPER SELWYN Huts residents
have forced the council to
reconsider the future of the
settlement.
But it has cost the residents
more than $10,000.
Hut residents have put pressure
on the council since March
when it set an eviction date for
June 30, 2039.
Councillors will today vote
on six recommendations, which
include pausing the current
process and extending the
current deed of licence – due to
expire on August 26 – to July 1,
2025, with the council using the
10 months to engage with the
huts community and potentially
set a new eviction date.

Information Act requests from
residents to council has now forced
its hand.

when he got his first look at the All
Blacks environment: Mum Katrina was
the team’s nutritionist, and at times he
would be in a front pack when she went
about her work.
Fast forward 24 years and the now
2.03cm, 110kg lock made his All Blacks
debut against Fiji in San Diego on
Saturday, coming off the bench for the
last 20 minutes in the 47-5 win.

the Fijian test.
The family is from West Melton, where
Sam and siblings Tom, Charlotte and
Alice, played their junior rugby.
“It was a real special moment. I was
just so excited for him,” Hunter told the
Selwyn Times as he headed home from
the United States earlier this week.
“Until you get onto the field, you’re not
an All Black. It was great to see him get
across the chalk.”
Hunter had been in Auckland with
friends – including Selwyn Times
columnist Bevan Sisson – for the
previous weekend’s England test and a
few rounds of golf.

THERE ARE concerns noise
from a planned quarry near
Burnham will keep soldiers
at the military camp awake at
night.
Fletcher Building subsidiary
Burnham 2020 Ltd wants to
turn 361.9ha of farmland into
a quarry about 500m from the
camp. It has applied to Environment
Canterbury for resource
consents.
The proposed quarry will be
operated by Fletcher Building
subsidary Winstone Aggregates.
In its submission to ECan,
the New Zealand Defence Force
said if noise was not managed
by the quarry, it would disrupt
personnel and other Burnham
residents.
“NZDF is concerned that
noise generated by any proposed
quarry nighttime operations
could disrupt residents and staff
sleeping in barracks,” it said in
the submission.
It also wants assurances about
the quarry’s potential effects
on water sources and transport
routes, and how dust will be
managed.
“NZDF seeks that the resource
consents if granted, include appropriate
measures and conditions
to mitigate potential effects
on the camp. Otherwise, NZDF
requests that the application be
declined.”

concerns they would like addressed,
while the residents are
all opposing the application.
FENZ wants clarification
about the amount of water
available on site for firefighting,
while the Ministry of Education
wants dust, traffic and any other
effects on Burnham School
managed.
NZTA was concerned about
the quarry’s traffic management
plan not having restrictions on
which roads trucks would use.
Nearby residents are opposing
the quarry for its size, dust,
effects on underground water,
increase in traffic and noise, and
the impacts on rural lifestyle.
Fletcher Building declined to
answer questions from Selwyn
Times.
All the company would say
was: “We’re currently working
through the submissions
received and will actively
engage with submitters to better
understand and address their
concerns. This includes the
Defence Force and FENZ.”
A date for a hearing is yet to
be set.

Burn pile branch blaze
contained by digger
A digger was used to help
contain a burn pile gone wrong.
Hororata Fire chief Bruce Sayer
said they attended the blaze
at Snowden Station last week
after flames from a burn pile
jumped into a separate pile of
branches that wasn’t supposed
to be burned. The owners of
the property had a digger ready
when crews arrived so they
could create a fire break. Sayer
said the blaze was contained by
8pm.
Battery recycling back
Battery recycling stations have
been relaunched in the district.
The council has collaborated
with New World and Phoenix
Recycling Group to install the
new stations in an attempt to
keep batteries out of landfills.
All types of household batteries
can be dropped off at Pines
Resource Recovery Park, as well
as Lincoln and Rolleston New
World supermarkets.
Sister cities trip
The Selwyn Sister Cities
fellowship will be based
in Lanzhou City in Gansu
Province, China, not Shandan
as was reported last week.

17m comms tower for new Lincoln
town centre a potential ‘eyesore’

A 17M-HIGH communication
tower for the district’s emergency
services is set to be built in the
centre of Lincoln, with some
calling it a potential eyesore.
The tower is part of a national
programme to improve communication
for emergency services,
and is expected to be completed
later this year.
Once built, it will sit between
two public plazas which are part
of a $46 million town centre
upgrade, to be carried out over
the next 10 years.
The upgrade is designed to
make Lincoln’s town centre
more attractive. It includes
new car parks, cycle lanes,
streetlights, reconstructed
roading and footpaths to address
longstanding maintenance
issues, and putting overhead
lines underground.
Coffee Culture will be across
the road from the tower. Owner
Steve Jaeger said other locations
should have considered.
“Why can’t it be behind the
event centre or something where
there’s no one really around?
It shouldn’t be an eyesore for

everybody,” Jaeger said.
Next Generation Critical
Communications is in charge
of the project, but Selwyn Times
understands a separate company
applied for a certificate of
compliance to build the tower on
Lyttelton St next to the library.
The company and the full details
of certificate of compliance
have remained confidential.
Jaeger said the application
should have been made public.
“I think the best thing would
have been if they had a conversation
with the community.”
Chorus owns the land the
tower is expected to be built
on and leases it to the council
for community uses, including
the Lincoln Farmers and Craft
Market.
Market chair Gary Miller also
said the tower will be an eyesore
in the town centre.
“Anything three to four times
the size of anything around it is
going to stand out.
“It is going to impact on people
and businesses and livelihoods
and it should have been something
discussed to begin with,”
Miller said.
He said the tower has the
potential to impact at least seven
stalls and disrupt the flow of the
market.
An NGCC spokesperson said
the application was kept confidential
for security reasons.
“New Zealand’s emergency
services do not promote the
names or locations of radio sites
in the interests of site security
to ensure the ongoing provision
of a radio service for frontline
responders – to be safe from the
risk of potential actions from
‘bad actors’.”
NGCC would not say whether
other locations were considered,
but said the site was chosen due
to its existing infrastructure.
“The site is on Chorus land
which means it benefits from the
existing resilient infrastructure
the exchange provides. This
resilience, including the power
supply, supports the emergency
services’ requirement for the
continuous provision of a
radio service so they can stay
connected, and respond to
everyday jobs and also large
events, for example, weatherrelated
emergencies in the
area.”

out from the applicant
if other Grant Miller
locations were
considered.
“In an ideal world, of course
we wouldn’t want it there but
if it’s absolutely necessary to go
there and it’s the only place it can
go we’ll have to make the best of
it,” Grant said.

were always a benefit. He
said the brigade has never had
any major issues with radio black
spots.
A St John spokesperson also
said it had not experienced any
black spots.

and no one’s ever happy with it,
but perhaps we haven’t handled
it very well,” Lyall said.
Council chief executive Sharon
Mason said the council has
done what it said it would do.
“What we’ve always said all
the way along is that we want
to get feedback from the community
and we have been really
open about that and what you’re
seeing is a reflection of that,”
Mason said.
“We’ve had a number of town
hall meetings, we’ve had a number
of conversations with the
community, I’ve been down to
visit the community myself and
taking on the feedback
from that we’ve said here’s
an alternative route.”
In 2019, it was decided
the community’s future
would be short-term and
finite. Mason said the term
will still be finite, but no
eviction date has been set.
When the decision was
made, climate change and
the future of the wastewater
system were the major concerns.
The wastewater issues have now
been solved with a pipeline to

TOUGH economic conditions
have forced the unexpected
closure of the Lincoln HQ bar and
restaurant.
“Despite our best efforts and
unwavering dedication we have
faced continuous operational
challenges and an uphill battle
since opening in the midst of the
Covid-19 pandemic in 2021,” HQ
management posted to Facebook.
“Unfortunately, the financial
pressures and the ever-changing
business landscape have made
impossible for us to continue
operating.”
The post thanked customers,
the community and staff for their
support.
Meanwhile The Bridge Bar and
Eatery in Prebbleton, which was
damaged by a fire in April, could
be closed for a while yet.
Owner Murray Smith said they
are not expecting to reopen until
late this year or early next.
After the fire Smith was hoping
to be open within two months,
but more roof repair work was
needed.
In Rolleston, Andy Jacques and

IN RESPONSE TO your article in
Selwyn Times on July 17, we live under
the flight path on Weedons Rd, or I
should say a very small portion of the
land we reside on.
I have lived in the Rolleston and
Weedons area for most of my life and
when Rolleston finally got the go-ahead
to expand, most of us realised it would
grow to where or past where it is now.
We have had an earthquake that sped
up the process, but it was always going to
happen.
The bylaws in place are outdated and
are a hindrance to further growth.

flight path of Christchurch Airport. I
used to really enjoy watching all the
flights take off and land.
The noise was an issue in an old,
single-glazed house, especially with the
bigger planes, but building styles and
materials have come a long way and can
help combat that now.
I would like to be able to subdivide my
family property in Harewood but am
unable to due to the zoning restrictions.
I’m in a position of having to sell
it as-is, and potentially lose out on
substantially more money.

regarding the big jump in motorists
caught speeding.
So many speeders have been caught in
Brookside Rd because someone thought
it was worthwhile putting an unmarked
van with a speed camera in it every
Monday and most Thursdays around
8am.
Heaven knows where these two vans
spend the rest of their time, but it
certainly isn’t in Irwell where I live.

Tonight, I reported yet another
motorist travelling at nearly 100km/h
through Irwell to the police, something I
do regularly. The speed limit is 60km/h.
I regularly report speeding motorists
to the police, or their employers if they’re
in work vehicles – driving billboards
for their businesses. The drivers usually
forget they’re so easily identified.
How a village resident hasn’t been
mown down by a speeding vehicle while
leaving their driveway is really a miracle.

Speed limits to change
around Selwyn schools
New speed limits have been put in place
around Selwyn schools to help keep children
safe, just in time for schools starting back.
Most Selwyn schools will have a reduced
speed limit of 30km/h during peak times of
the day when children are travelling to and
from school.

The variable speed limits will come into force
as the signs are installed outside each school
and is a part of the Council’s Interim Speed
Management Plan.
For most schools, the times of day when the
reduced speed limits will be in place is from
8.30am to 9am and 2.45 to 3.15pm.
During these pick-up and drop off times,
please be alert for kids getting off and on
school buses, in and out of cars and travelling
by foot, bike and scooters.
The Council’s Executive Director Infrastructure
and Property, Tim Mason says the rollout of the
new speed limits is a great outcome for local
school children and their families.
“Selwyn’s roads have been getting busier and
busier as our population grows. Our speeds
around schools need to account for this so
that our kids can safely get to and from
school each day.”
“This was something that came through in
the community feedback on the draft Speed
Management Plan last year, and aligns with
the Government’s intentions on setting
speed limits.”
“We’re pleased to begin rolling out these safer
limits for our schools.”
The Council’s Interim Speed Management
Plan has been certified by NZ Transport
Agency Waka Kotahi.

FOR SONIA Fletcher, seeing the
smiles on people’s faces when they
come into the op-shop where she
volunteers is her favourite part of
the job.
Sonia has been volunteering at
the Hope Op Shop in Rolleston
for the past two years and never
thought receiving an award for
her work could be a possibility.
To her surprise, she was recently
a recipient at the Volunteering
Canterbury recognition awards.
The 79-year-old has always
enjoyed volunteer work, so when
she saw the Hope Op Shop
advertising for staff, she applied.
“I enjoy giving back to the
community. You can see their
happy faces when they come in
and buy stuff.
“I just enjoy meeting people and
try to bring a bit of happiness into
their life if I can.”
Her main job at the shop is
packing purchases for customers,
and likes to chat with them as she
packs.
She couldn’t name a favourite
memory during her time
volunteering, but said the people
she works with make the job a lot
more fun.
“There’s lots of laughs, lots of
jokes. I have a good support group
that I work with, fantastic group.”
As well as the op shop, she also
volunteers with the Rolleston
Lions Club.
Sonia was shocked when she
learned she would be receiving an
award and was then told she had
been nominated twice, from both
the op shop and the Lions.
“I was gobsmacked. I just did
not expect it at all.
“I said ‘surely it could go to

position on the sideboard. I felt
quite humble actually.”
When Sonia is not volunteering,
she keeps busy with line dancing
classes and helping out at Hope
Church.

years, Ellesmere Big Band will
be hosting a concert to tap
into the growing Rolleston
population.
The band will be performing
songs from the 1930s to present
day at the Rolleston Community
Centre on Saturday.
Band member Alex Hayward
said the band is hoping the
concert will bring some interest
to their music.
“(The concert is) an attempt to
try and get the music out there.
“The population of Rolleston
has obviously grown considerably,
and we thought that it’d
be an opportunity to see if we
could tap into the growing
population.”
The 18-member band usually
performs at festivals in Selwyn
and Christchurch, but wanted to
try something different by putting
on its own concert.
“We wanted to get another
gig and we thought we’d do it
ourselves.”

Prebbleton hoping for silverware
to send off departing head coach

PREBBLETON will look to
farewell head coach Simon
Fitzgerald with the Coleman
Shield on Saturday.
After two years at Prebbleton,
as head coach of the division 1
team and director of rugby, this
weekend’s final against Darfield
at Kirwee Domain will be
Fitzgerald’s last.
He has loved his time with the
club, last year helping them win
their first Coleman Shield since
1974, while
they also made
the combined
country final in
each of the last
two years.
“It’s been
awesome. It’s
a really good
rugby club, not
just in one area,
but in all areas.

Really strong culture and as far as
an amateur rugby club experience
goes, you can’t really do better
than what we’ve had at Prebbleton
for the last couple of years,” he
said.
Fitzgerald, who is from
Northern Ireland, is heading to
Vancouver, Canada, when his visa
expires next month.
He lived there for four years
before coming to Prebbleton.
“I’m just moving on to the
next stage of life. I’ve got some
friends there and I’m a permanent
resident.”
But he’s ‘probably not’ going to
work in rugby.
“(I’ll) just focus on getting a bit
of money,” he said.
Fitzgerald said culture was
a key part of the Prebbleton’s
div 1 success – the side have
made all four finals across the
combined country and Ellesmere
competitions during his reign.
“We’re delighted we get to
have one more week together.
Everybody in the group gets on
really well with each other. Some

strong friendships are made
through the club, and through
rugby,” he said.
“The boys are just happy to keep
doing what they enjoy doing with
each other.”
In the weekend’s semi-finals,
Prebbleton and Darfield both won
away from home
Prebbleton scored late to beat
Southbridge 22-19 while Darfield
caused one of the upsets of the
season, beating competition
favourites Waihora 30-22.
Darfield head coach Chris Lea
was stoked with the result.
“There was a bit of expectation
I think. They’re the top side and
they’ve played pretty well. They’ve
been the benchmark all season.
“We knew we had to turn it on
and the boys played really well.
I’m very happy.”

the competition – they didn’t win
any of their first four games – but

A LINCOLN karter has made a
step towards his racing dreams
with victory at the National
Schools Championship in
Nelson.
Lincoln High’s Izaak Fletcher,
15, won the Rotax Max Junior
class at the event two weeks ago.
Izaak was four seconds clear
of second-place Levi McMillan
from St Bede’s College – the
biggest winning margin of
the three races held at the
competition.
He said it was a ‘really special’
victory.
“I’ve been trying to win that
championship for quite a few
them sneak into the top four.
“We scraped through on bonus
points, same with the combined
comp,” said Lea.
He said their uptick in form
was thanks to the team growing
used to the new coaching system,
with Lea and Steve Devereux as
co-coaches.
“I think it’s just time with the
gameplan and the boys really
getting clarity on what they’re
doing.”
Prebbleton’s recent form had
been the opposite. Before their
semi-final win, they had won just
one of their previous four games
dating back to the combined
country final loss to Glenmark-
Cheviot in late June.
That included a 47-38 loss to
Southbridge in the final round,
before Prebbleton reversed that
result on Saturday.
Fitzgerald said their semi-final
win was one of their best.
“We discussed as a group to
years now, so it was real good to
finally be able to win it.”
Izaak is already on the way to
achieving his dreams of being a
professional race car driver.
Last year he competed in
Formula Ford – a nationwide

would say that was one of our best

of pressure off us,” said Lea.

Obviously when I first started
in the car, it’s a lot different
to karting so I was a little bit
nervous around all the other
drivers, especially in a bigger
car.
“It’s hard to get used to it
because it’s a different size and

weekend, coaches are making
slight adjustments to their game
strategy now they know who
they will face in the finals.
Work out who is fit, what the
bench will look like and which
players will make the greatest
impact.
Ultimately, who gets selected
is often the difference between
winning and losing.
One thing coaches may have
to navigate is the tricky selection
of returning players who may
have been unavailable for a
number of weeks, but are now
able to play.
Do you stick with the players
who got you to the finals, or
do you pick the strongest team
available? Will it create issues
with the team’s continuity or
do you back a player who is
one of the best in the team to
make a much needed impact, in
a game that for many will be
the highlight of their amateur
career? It is a very fine line
indeed.

MINISTERIAL APPOINTMENTS TO THE ESTABLISHMENT
BOARD OF TRUSTEES ROLLESTON SOUTH PRIMARY
SCHOOL, ROLLESTON
Registrations of Interest are invited for individuals wishing to be considered for
appointment as trustees on the Establishment Board of the new Rolleston South Primary
School.
The establishment board will develop the new school’s charter. It would also appoint the
principal and staff, and work with its community to build a vision and school culture
which supports learning and achievement for all its students.
This establishment board would be in place until board elections are held in 2026.
Applicants should preferably have knowledge and experience of schools and/or school
governance. They need to work well in a team, be able to put plans in place for the
school’s future, have good communication skills and represent the diversity of the
school’s students. The overriding focus and objective of effective trusteeship is the
quality of education that the students are receiving and commitment to Te Tiriti o
Waitangi.

West Melton Rifle Range
28 – 30 July 2024
The general public is to be advised that a New
Zealand Army Exercise will be conducted at the
West Melton Rifle Range over the period 28 – 30
July 2024.
The exercise will involve personnel of 2/1 RNZIR,
Depot Company from Burnham Military Camp.
Training will involve soldiers conducting low light
and night firing from Sunday 28 July – Tuesday
30 July 2024. All activities will be conducted at
West Melton Rifle Range. Live rounds will be used
between the hours of 07:00am until 11:30pm. The
exercise will also involve the movement of troops
and vehicles by day and night.
The New Zealand Army takes fire risk seriously and
will ensure fire mitigation is present.

Snowy River Mine is currently expanding our mining crews and we
welcome applications for Underground Mining Crews to work
alongside our current crews.
Our Mining crews are multi skilled and trained to undertake a variety
of tasks including operating mobile equipment such as loaders,
trucks and IT’s. Our crews also undertake installation of ground
support, mine services and charging explosives to support our mine
development activities.
Mining crews work on an attractive 7on/7off rotating days and nights
roster and can benefit from bus transport to/from Greymouth, private
health insurance, and access to our Employee Assistance Program.
Experience in mining is not essential as full training will be provided.
Those with transferable skills such as working with heavy machinery
or in forestry or farming will be highly regarded as will any previous
mining experience in either hard rock or coal.
Satisfactory completion of a pre-employment medical including
drug and alcohol testing, and clean police clearance is part of the
recruitment process. Federation Mining has a zero tolerance for drugs
and alcohol and daily testing will be mandatory onsite. Federation
Mining is a smoke free workplace. A clean driving record and ability to
drive a manual vehicle is necessary for this role.
These roles are on a short term contract with a view to extend or
become permanent in the next stage of funding for Federation Mining.

A DARFIELD farmer has
spoken of watching a man leap into
the flooded Hawkins River to try and
save himself after a helicopter winch
rescue operation failed.
Rod May had taken his tractor to
the scene on Greendale Rd, to try and
reach the middle-aged man who had
been clinging to the branches of a tree
in the rising waters on Sunday night.
The man had driven into the
flooded river, escaped from his car
and ca led emergency services from
his ce lphone which he managed to
keep with him.
Ultimately, a second helicopter
winch operation plucked the man
to safety after he was swept downstream.
It was a happy ending to the
ordeal which had lasted more than
three hours. The rescue was among
several in Canterbury on Sunday in
flooded rivers.
May said he and his family had just
had dinner when a neighbour alerted
them. Arriving about 8.50pm, he saw
the floodwaters were too high for the
tractor, however, he used its lights for
i luminating the site where the man

four times by youth believes a
family group conference was a
waste of time.
The meeting involved one
of the teens, a 13-year-old,
his family, Oranga Tamariki,
police and four other victims,
including another dairy
owner.
Facilitated by Oranga
Tamariki, youth justice family
group conferences are
intended to help youth take
responsibility and leave them
with a plan for the future.
While the victims could
speak a the meeting, Sangeet
Mehta said the decision had
already been made as to what
would happen with the youth.

A BAR patron who won $1200
on the pokies may have been
targeted by thieves moments after
she co lected the money.
A group of men who were in
the bar a the same time are the
focus of police inquiries. It is
believed they watched her being
paid, and then quickly swooped.
The incident happened at The
Famous Grouse Hotel in Lincoln
two weeks ago.
After she was paid out a the
bar, the men who had been
si ting nearby went over and
congratulated her. While she was
distracted the money disappeared
from her handbag. She only
realised it was gone after she left
the hotel.
Police have taken CCTV
security camera footage from the
hotel which shows the men going
over to the woman and mobbing
her in a congratulatory way. The
footage also captures a hand from
one of the men going towards the
bag.
Police say they may have
identified one of the group but
aren’t saying anymore about
the incident. The Selwyn Times
understands the men are from
the Amberley area.

greyhound industry to improve greyhound welfare,
the organisation says the industry has been unable to
adequately address its animal welfare problems.

obligations and is no longer acceptable in New Zealand
society. A recent survey carried out by an independent
research company on behalf of SPCA reports that
74% of New Zealanders would vote to ban greyhound

Home heating –
electricity, gas or wood?
How you heat your home depends on a
number of factors. Figuring out the best
way to heat your home continues to be a
matter for debate.
Several things are undisputed. A
warm, dry home is essential for
comfort and good health, good
insulation dramatically increases
the efficiency of any heating
system and ventilation is an
important consideration.
Most homes are
heated by electricity,
gas, or wood. In
New Zealand,
heating accounts
for approximately
30 percent of a
home’s annual energy
consumption. There are many
things you can do to reduce
consumption and cost.
The World Health Organisation
recommends a temperature of 18 deg C
for indoor living areas, and slightly less for
bedrooms. It recommends slightly higher
temperatures for vulnerable people – the
elderly and small children. Studies have
shown that indoor temperatures below 12
degrees can disrupt sleep.
Among all these considerations, how
you heat your home is a matter of personal
choice, with many options available.
Heat pumps are generally the most
common and cost-effective form of home
heating in New Zealand. Used properly,
they heat quickly and are convenient.
However, you need to have the right sized
unit for the area and they don’t work when
electricity is not available. They tend to be
room-specific but ducted heat pumps are
becoming more popular and are costeffective,
especially in new builds, but can
also be installed into established homes.
Modern wood burners may be the
closest you can get to an open-fire feel, but
are much more efficient. Wood is generally
a renewable fuel, and if you have a cheap
or free supply, a wood burner may be
the least expensive heating option. They
heat large areas and are not dependent
on electricity but there is the chopping
and stacking to be done, flues need to be
cleaned regularly and older models can
contribute to air pollution and may violate
strict air quality regulations – www.mfe.
govt.nz has detailed information regarding
this.
Pellet fires are typically more efficient
than wood burners but can have a smaller
output. They require electricity but
some have a battery backup and they are
thermostatically controlled with timers.
These must comply with regulations which
are also detailed on the Ministry for the
Environment website.
Gas heating is common and convenient.
Central heating systems can be zone
controlled and provide warm air
circulation. Flued gas heaters are best, as
unflued and portable gas heaters produce
lots of moisture and emit pollutants that
can be unsafe. Flued gas heating systems
can be installed in most homes. They are
fast heating and are relatively inexpensive
to run. However gas is not a renewable
resource and prices can vary widely.
The greatest source of energy is actually
free. Harnessing the sun can dramatically
reduce heating costs and is the most
environmentally friendly way to heat your
home. Passive heating combines insulation
with good design, accomplished more
effectively in new builds but also able to be
incorporated into existing homes.
Getting the sun’s warmth into your
home is a function of the design; keeping
it in is a function of the insulation. There
is a wealth of information online as passive
heating becomes normative in the design
and building industry.

Preparation for moving in
Congratulations! You’re all set to move
into your new home, and now it’s time
to start the packing and shifting process.
To make the transition easier, reduce the
stress with the following tips.
Before packing, it’s a great time to take
stock of your furniture and belongings.
Assessing what needs to be moved,
donated, or sold helps reduce clutter and
makes packing more manageable. Sort
items on how fragile they are and their
size to determine appropriate packing
materials. You can often find suitable
packing boxes and wrapping being given
away on social media; always get more
than you think you will need. Also, have a
supply of sturdy tape, sharp scissors, and
marker pens.
Packing materials
Use packing materials to prevent
damage to your items. Choose sturdy
cardboard boxes that aren’t too large
and bulky, bubble wrap, packing tape,
and furniture blankets to protect items
from scratches and impacts. You can use
foam/polystyrene packaging, corrugated
cardboard, bubble wrap, or linen for
fragile pieces.
Packing
Start packing things you won’t need right
away to avoid a last-minute rush and
stress. Pack items in layers with plenty of
cushioning in between, with space at the
top for more cushioning. Try to keep like
with like items together. Don’t be tempted
to overfill a box. Use furniture blankets,
old blankets, towels, or packing material,
but make sure any items with glass are
bubble-wrapped or safely wrapped in
linen. If possible, disassemble large
furniture, making it easier to handle and
transport. Bag up and label all screws and
bolts removed for when you reassemble
the furniture.
Organisation
Clearly label all boxes with the contents
and the room they belong to. Keep an
inventory of all packed items to save time
and confusion when unpacking. Leave
cords attached to electronics, or take
photos of where cords are plugged in to
make it easier to set up when you arrive.
Use moving blankets to protect from
damage, dust, and dirt.
Choose a space out of the way to put the
boxes you’ve completed packing. Use a
moving trolley to move heavier items and
avoid injury. Clean empty cupboards and
