National Urban League Conference Comes
to New Orleans July 24-27
Over A Century of Making Impact
The 2024 National Urban League Conference is an event that will bring together leaders from across the country to explore the challenges and strategies to
deal with the problems of systemic barriers to equality and opportunities for all Americans. Also, it will address the importance of civic engagement and the
threats to democracy.
National Urban League: Leading
the Struggle for Democracy
In these perilous times, where the future of the nation’s
journey to becoming “A More Perfect Union” is
in question, this November, Democracy is on the ballot,
and citizens must decide to become civically engaged.
Civil Rights leaders from across the nation will
convene at the National Urban League Conference in
New Orleans from July 24th-27th to educate, inform,
and inspire that the struggle for equality, justice, and
freedom continues.
During this several-day event, where empowerment
of the NUL Conference will explore the challenges of
systemic racism, discrimination, and barriers to opportunities
in every aspect of the current social and
economic landscape and bring together leading innovators
and trailblazers in business and industry, government,
and community.
Additionally, this year’s conference is especially significant.
It marks a special homecoming for National
Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial,
who was elected to the first of his two terms as Mayor
of New Orleans 30 years ago. Where his leadership
and vision helped reduce crime, created economic opportunities
for many, and was a champion in fighting
for justice and fairness for all citizens. This is what he’s
brought in his tenure as CEO of the National Urban
League since being chosen to lead the organization.
New Orleans Native and President and CEO of Bright
Moments, William “Bill” Rouselle Jr., has died at 77
Rouselle Leaves an Enduring Legacy of Hope
Data News Staff Edited
Report
William “Bill” Rouselle, Jr., native
and proud New Orleanian who
broke barriers and changed the
lives of countless people through
his motto of “Speak Truth to the
People”, fought a fight grounded
in hope and optimism for equity
among all people.
Born in New Orleans on August
3, 1946, his life in the media is rooted
in a desire for the truth, a commitment
to change, and a will to
leave this world a better place. The
son of a public school teacher, Bill
grew up in Uptown New Orleans.
Nurtured by the rich New Orleans
culture, he developed a love for his
city, its people and a commitment to
speaking truth to power!
For 40 years, Rouselle and his
company provided public relations,
marketing, and advertising services
to a long list of clients including
Liberty Bank, Total Community Action,
The City of New Orleans, Entergy,
New Orleans Public Schools,
and New Orleans East Hospital.
One of the City’s leading political
strategists, he managed successful
campaigns for Public Schools and
City Millage Elections, as well as
numerous political candidates such
as Dorothy Mae Taylor, the first
William “Bill” Rouselle Jr
Black Woman Legislator in Louisiana,
U. S. Senator – Mary Landrieu,
Mayors Ray Nagin, Mitch Landrieu,
and the first Female African American
Mayor of New Orleans, LaToya
Cantrell to name a few.
A 1967 Honors Graduate from
Xavier University, Rouselle landed
a publishing intern position with
Time, Inc. in New York. That next
year, he became the first African
American on-air news reporter in
New Orleans at WDSU TV.
After leaving WDSU, he would
be appointed as Deputy Director of
the City’s Human Relations Committee
where he engineered the
passage of a local Public Accommodations
Ordinance, opening restaurants
and bars to all citizens.
In the mid-70s, Bill hosted a
weekly TV show on the public
television station, WYES TV called
Nation Time, while also serving
as Producer for the Free Southern
Theater. During this period, Rouselle
joined the board of the New
Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation
following a protest for Black
involvement in the event. He would
eventually serve as president and
help oversee the development of
the festival into one of the world’s
premier music events.
Rouselle later worked as Director
of the Parent Community Alliance,
an organization developed
to organize parents to be more
involved in public school policy.
He learned about community organizing
in this role under the tutelage
of Oretha Castle Haley, his
most important mentor. In the late
70’s, Bill headed the Ad Hoc Committee
for Accountable Police,
which won increased civilian oversight
citizen interactions.
In the early 1980s, Rouselle
Magazine, a Black-owned and operated
national publication based
in New Orleans. Then in 1984, he
and former Black Collegian Editor,
doors of Bright Moments Public
Relations Firm.
In the 1990s and early 2000s,
while managing the day-to-day operations
of Bright Moments, Bill
hosted the Sunday Journal Radio
Show every Sunday from 7 to 9 AM
on WYLD FM Radio. He simultaneously
hosted a weekly TV show
on the Cox Cable Access Channel
called The Liberty Network – sponsored
by Liberty Bank. Both shows
featured news analysis, feature interviews
and hard hitting, honest
dialogue between the host and the
viewing and listening audience.
In 2007, Rouselle was honored
with the local advertising industry’s
EPA Provides $50 Million Grant for New Orleans to Tackle
Pollution, and Effects of Climate Change.
Eric Connerly
Data News Weekly
Contributor
New Orleans is set to receive almost
$50 million in federal funding
to counteract pollution and climate
change. The money comes as part
of an Environmental Protection
Agency Program funded by the Inflation
Reduction Act, part of President
Biden’s Investing in America
Program.
New Orleans is one of three cities
across the nation chosen as a
grant recipient. With the funds,
New Orleans aims to reduce the
harm from Greenhouse Gas Emissions
in the city over the next five
years. Key aims for the funding include
improving air quality, alleviating
urban heat islands and reducing
the city’s carbon footprint, which
helps reduce the impacts of climate
change.
“As New Orleans works to reduce
our emissions contributing
to climate change, this substantial
funding will fuel seven Pivotal
Greenhouse Gas Reduction Measures
that align with a cross-section
of goals from the City’s Climate
Action Plan and the Southeastern
Louisiana Priority Climate Action
Plan” Mayor LaToya Cantrell said
in a statement.
In addition, the initiatives include
increasing energy efficiency
in city buildings, solar panel
installations, improved access to
transportation options such as
walking and biking paths as well
as increasing native plant populations
in the city.
New Orleans was one of 25
awardees of Climate Pollution Reduction
Grants, which distributed
over $4.3 billion to state, local and
tribal governments in over 30
states.
The grant specifically targets
“improving the health and well-being
of local low-income and disadvantaged
communities,” according
to the EPA website.
“President Joe Biden’s legacy
stands as a testament to his unparalleled
commitment to our nation.
As a Senator, Joe Biden was a steadfast
advocate for civil rights, voting
rights, and the rule of law. His
dedication to these principles was
unwavering,” said Congressman
Troy Carter.
“As President, Joe Biden leveraged
his deep institutional knowledge
and strong congressional
relationships to pass transformative
legislation that has significantly
empowered families in
Louisiana and across the country.
His leadership has brought about
meaningful change and progress.
Notably, President Biden made
history with the nomination of
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson as
the first African American woman
to the Supreme Court of the United
States, further cementing his
legacy as a champion of equality
and justice.
“Today, we honor the substantial
contributions of the 46th President
of the United States. His decision
to pass the torch to Vice President
Kamala Harris is an amazingly selfless
act that resonates deeply with
the American people. I have every
confidence in Vice President Kamala
Harris to continue the great
work they have done to strengthen
our nation.
We love you, Mr. President!”

Democrats and the rest of the nation
are once again turning to Black
women to lead the charge in saving
democracy, and they have again
stepped to the plate and swung for
the fences. Following President
Joe Biden’s announcement that he
would not run for the Democratic
nomination, the Network Win with
Black Women organized a Zoom
call to show how prepared and determined
Black women were to
take on this enormous challenge.
The call, held on Sunday, was a
powerful display of unity and determination,
with Black women leaders
from across the nation voicing
their unwavering support for Vice
President Kamala Harris.
The Zoom call reportedly drew
an astounding 40,000 attendees and
featured an impressive lineup of
speakers, including Reps. Joyce Beatty,
Maxine Waters, and Jasmine
Crockett. The leaders passionately
emphasized Black women’s critical
role in the upcoming election and
shared personal stories about Harris
that underscored her qualifications
and leadership qualities. Other
notable attendees included DC
Mayor Muriel Bowser, Maryland
Senate hopeful Angela Alsobrooks,
Civil Rights Leader Bernice King,
and Black Voters Matter Co-Founder
LaTosha Brown.
The call highlighted the urgency
of fundraising and voter registration
as critical strategies for supporting
Harris’s campaign. The
participants raised over $1 million
during the call. “We have a plan.
This is not arbitrary. We are ready.”
asserted Holli Holiday, one of the
call’s moderators.
Enthusiastic attendees expressed
their readiness to work
tirelessly to elect Harris. “This is
work. Roll up your sleeves; we got
work to do,” one attendee insisted.
Another attendee declared, “Fired
up and ready for this moment led
by an Intergenerational Legion of
Black Women. Let’s get to work.
Let’s gather our sons, daughters,
nieces, and nephews. Let’s do what
Black women do!”
After exiting the race, President
Biden’s made it clear that his vice
president should be the party’s
nominee. “My very first decision
as the party nominee in 2020 was to
pick Kamala Harris as my vice president,”
Biden said. “And it’s been
the best decision I’ve made. Today,
I want to offer my full support and
endorsement for Kamala to be our
party’s nominee this year. Democrats,
it’s time to come together and
beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
In the hours following Biden’s
announcement, Harris’ campaign
saw a surge of support, with about
$50 million in grassroots donations
pouring in. Democratic officials nationwide
quickly followed Biden’s
lead, voicing their endorsements
for Harris. Governor Roy Cooper
of North Carolina praised Harris,
saying, “Kamala Harris should be
the next President. I’ve known her
since our days as AGs, and she
has what it takes to defeat Donald
Trump and lead our country
thoughtfully and with integrity.”
Governor Kathy Hochul of New
York added her voice to the chorus
of support: “I’m proud to stand beside
Kamala Harris. She is the right
candidate to unite our country; I am
confident she will deliver for New
Yorkers. Let’s get to work.”
Governors Janet Mills of Maine,
Gavin Newsom of California, and
Jared Polis of Colorado echoed similar
sentiments, highlighting Harris’s
capacity and readiness to lead.
Senator Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin
declared, “I’m proud to endorse
VP Kamala Harris for President.
Today is a new beginning for
our party and our country, and I’m
excited to keep working together to
lower costs for Wisconsin families,
grow our Made in America economy,
and restore our fundamental
rights and freedoms.”
Harris has repeatedly stated the
importance of the 2024 election. “I
will do everything in my power to
unite the Democratic Party—and
unite our nation—to defeat Donald
Trump and his extreme Project
2025 agenda,” she said.
