Piping hot incentive
to clean up beach
• By Dylan Smits
FILL A BUCKET with
rubbish from the beach and
claim a free coffee until
springtime.
That’s the offer from Beach
Bar in Sumner, as it extends
Plastic Free July into August.
“We’re just trying to
give back little a bit to the
community and keep the
beaches clean, and just get
some good karma out there,”
said manager Erin Walker.
Participants can collect
a bucket from the bar at 25
Esplanade and once full,
return it to the counter for a
free coffee.
Walker hopes more people
will take part after a rainy few
weeks.
“When the weather’s nice,
we definitely have a lot of
people that are keen to get
involved. So that’s really cool,”
she said.
People are encouraged to
bring rubbish in from Sumner
to Scarborough.
The scheme has been
running since June and the
bar has received more than 30
buckets of rubbish so far.
Plastic Free July is a global
initiative encouraging people
to stop using single-use
plastics during the month.
Charges laid
after police
respond
to firearm
incident
A MAN was arrested after armed
police were called to an incident
involving a firearm in Papanui on
Monday night.
The 38-year-old was charged
with preparing to commit a
crime, unlawfully possessing a
firearm, possessing utensils for
methamphetamine, and possessing
cannabis.
Christchurch metro response
manager, Inspector Leairne Dow,
said the man was allegedly seen
with a firearm on Papanui Rd
about 7.30pm.
Police seized the weapon and
were speaking to witnesses. No
one is understood to have been
injured during the incident.
Witnesses told chrislynchmedia.com
armed police could be
seen swarming over Papanui Rd,
near Kentucky Fried Chicken
“with their guns drawn”.
“Police swiftly responded
locating and apprehending the
38-year-old man in under 10 minutes,”
said Dow.
“A sawn-off shotgun, cannabis
and methamphetamine was
located and seized.
“Police work hard to hold
dangerous offenders to account,
especially those who show little
regard for the safety of our
community.
“Police continue to be out in the
community ready to respond to
any unlawful behaviour by gangs
and anyone who believes that they
are above the law.”

Museum final resting place
for late Queen’s Colour flag
A SIGNIFICANT reminder of
the reign of Queen Elizabeth II
has reached its final resting place
at the Air Force Museum of New
Zealand.
The Queen’s Colour – a special
flag presented to the Royal New
Zealand Air Force – will rest for
all time at the Wigram museum
as a reminder of “duty well done”.
The RNZAF’s original Colour
flag was first presented by the
Queen in December 1953 – and
is regarded as the air force’s most
precious treasure.
“The assets of an air force,
being primarily airmen and
machines, are constantly
changing,’’ RNZAF biographer
Geoffrey Bentley wrote in 1969.
“The permanent possessions
are few.
“The most treasured of these
is the Queen’s Colour and the
fact Her Majesty presented it in
person adds another dimension
to its value.
“It is a beautiful thing. While
its intrinsic value can be assessed
and will be known to a few, its
value as a symbol is beyond
price.’’
There is only ever one Colour
flag in service at a time but,
HONOUR: Squadron Leader Dan Garnett hands the Colour
over to museum director Wing Commander Brett Marshall.
because they are in use, they
wear out over time.
The first Colour from 1953 was
retired and put to rest in 1976 at
the Wellington Cathedral of St
Paul.
The second Colour is laid up
at the Chapel of St Mark at the
RNZAF Base Woodbourne.
And the third flag now resides
at the museum for safe-keeping
and display.
The Colour was received
by museum director, Wing
Commander Brett Marshall,
who said it would go into
the collection area until a
suitable display space could be
developed.
One option is to put it
alongside NZ3551, the Queen’s
C-47 Dakota plane, which has
been preserved as it was when
she flew aboard it on her 1953
tour of New Zealand.
“It’s a privilege for us to be
able to look after this taonga,’’
Marshall said.
“We’re looking forward to
displaying it so that as many
people as possible can get to
enjoy it and learn about its
history and traditions.’’
The flag-bearer party included
Warrant Officer Chris Wilson,
who is a previous Queen’s
Colour Warrant Officer;
and Warrant Officer Phil
Wansbrough, a previous Queen’s
Colour escort.
After the ceremony, the Colour
party made a traditional toast
to the late Queen. They read out
a verse from poet and soldier,
Sir Edward Hamley, about the
significance of the Colour.
The verse goes: “A moth-eaten
rag on a worm-eaten pole, it
doesn’t look likely to stir a man’s
soul; ‘Tis the deeds that were
done ‘neath the moth-eaten rag;
‘When that pole was a staff and
the rag was a flag.”
This sale is the 3rd property Cam has sold for me. I could not speak more highly of the
service, communication and professionalism. Cam’s experience speaks for itself, from the
appraisal to the sale everything went perfectly. Cam’s true colors really did shine when
I asked him questions about a separate property not related to himself, he was open to
answer all my questions and provide advice.
There is a very strong team working with Cam, they are always helpful.
I strongly recommend if you are looking to sell or buy a property or simply want
a casual chat about property, get in contact with Cam and the team. There is a
reason he receives the outstanding awards, he truly does deserve and earn them.
Remembering the life
The death of street
icon John Raymond
Truman, also known
as ‘Radio Ron’, after
an illness last week
impacted many
people in the
community. Here are
some of the tributes
made to Radio Ron
John had a passion for radios,
batteries, and coffee. He was a
familiar face in the city centre
and Riccarton Mall, often visiting
independently by bus to see his
many friends. His enthusiasm for
these simple pleasures reflected
his vibrant spirit. More than a
familiar face, John was a friend
to many and a vital part of our
community. He was well-known
and loved, even having his own
dedicated Facebook page, which
he cherished. He took great joy
in sharing it with the staff and
friends who read it to him. His
memory will live on in our hearts
and in the many stories we share
about his remarkable life.
– Environment Canterbury
councillor Deon Swiggs
Radio Ron Truman was such an
icon for Christchurch who cannot
be replaced. A very special,
unique and harmless man. He
will be missed by the community.
We won’t see you around
anymore but you’ll be shining up
above with radio signals.
– James Cousins
Radio Ron was a memorable
figure in the central city, always
turning heads and eliciting
a range of reactions, mostly
of amusement, as he strolled
the streets with a radio on his
shoulder, humming loudly. He
will be fondly remembered as a
long-standing institution in the
city. His unique presence and
charismatic personality made him
a beloved character among locals
and visitors alike.
People would often smile and
share stories of their encounters
with John, highlighting his ability
to bring joy and laughter to those
around him. John once confided
in me that he wanted to live
forever.
With his infectious smile and
warmth, it’s clear that our city
is better off for having had such
a vibrant identity among us.
His wish to live forever is, in a
way, fulfilled through the lasting
impressions he left on the many
people he connected with.
– David Lynch
I was 17 or 18 when I first saw
Radio Ron in town. I’m now 37
and used to love listening to him
sing with his radio. He always
knew when you’re sad or down as
he would always make you smile.
Rip Radio Ron, fly high and free
with your wings wide open.
– Teresa Boese
Feel like the Christchurch City
Council should erect a plaque to
honour him in one of his places,
like they did with the ‘bird man’
in the square. RIP John.
– Lee Purves
Marie Kyle-Stevenson,
winter Christmas trail.
Christmas arrives early on winter trail
• By Isabella Adams
DON’T EXPECT to see the
usual decorations if you’re
driving through Zonta’s winter
Christmas trail on Sunday.
After a successful first run last
year, 10 more homes around the
city have been decorated for the
tour.
Two of them are in Ryman’s
Northwood and Kevin Hickman
retirement villages.
Zonta spokesperson Marie
Kyle-Stevenson said each house
has themed decorations which
fit the homeowner’s personal
interests.
“One of the houses is going to
focus predominantly on shoes, so
that’s going to be fabulous.
“The woman actually loves
shoes. So there’ll be shoe trees
and all sorts of things.”
Kyle-Stevenson said activities,
such as shortbread-making and
creating floral displays, will be
held during the tour.
Most of the money raised
from the event will go to the
Canterbury Charity Hospital
and children’s charity Foster
Hope. A small portion of the
funds will go to some on Zonta’s
international charities.
The first winter Christmas trail
last year raised $20,000.
The trail will open at 10am and
finish at 4pm, with the last entry
at 3.30pm.
John was a fixture at all my
Age no barrier for
90-year-old Anne
• By Isabella Adams
AGE DOES NOT stop a 90-year-old from
climbing ladders at a co-operative shop
celebrating its 10-year anniversary.
Anne Marchant volunteers at Seaside
Treasures in New Brighton.
Her involvement started when she
wanted to sell her handmade calendars
at the shop, which stocks crafts made by
members of the community as well as
other donated goods.
Anne was told if she volunteered for a
day, then she could.
So she did, and she’s still there eight
years later.
Seaside Treasures founder Shirley Smith
said Anne is “unbelievable”.
“She climbs up ladders, she puts things
up. It’s amazing. Everyone else is a bit
scared to get up on stools and things, but
no, not our Anne.”
Anne repairs knick-kancks. She also
came up with the idea to organise all the
shop’s buttons into colour-coded boxes.
Despite all the tasks Anne said she actually
prefers “being lazy”, but she does them
to fulfil a need.
“Well, there’s so many little things that
need doing. It’s a little bit risky in a way
that you see something that needs doing,
and then you see something else that needs
doing, and you see something else . . . it’s
nice seeing the finished result.”
Seaside Treasures opened on July 14,
2014.
Shirley had moved back to New Zealand
after spending 16 years teaching english in
Turkey, when she came up with the idea
for the shop.
“I’d just come home from Turkey and
thought, oh, what can I do to help New
Brighton?
“I’d brought a lot of things home that
I needed to pass on, and I did a bit of
research and discovered that a community
co-operative shop would be a great thing
for New Brighton.”
Seaside Treasures started with seven
volunteers and two rooms in its Brighton
Mall store.
Ten years later, there are 12 volunteers
and seven rooms filled with crafts from
the community and items requested by
customers.
Shirley cannot believe the store has
made it this far.
“It’s just absolutely a dream.
“(When it started) I thought, well give it
a year and it’ll maybe fizzle out. And here
we are now, 10 years later, it’s unbelievable.”
Shirley owes the store’s success to its
volunteers.
“Dedication with the volunteers, working
together, and a great bunch of people,
and seeing the rewards.”
These “rewards” are the donations they
make to local organisations.
Seaside Treasures has donated between
$4500 and $10,000 to organisations and
charities in east Christchurch every year
since it opened.
The New Brighton Surf Life Saving Club
received a $1000 donation in February.
Chairperson Lachlan Hill said the club is
grateful for every donation it receives.
“Our staff are volunteers and they give
up a lot of time to the club.
“Any money from the community
means a lot to us and it goes it goes very far
towards medical equipment and IRBs (inflatable
rescue boats) and helping around
the club just to keep the lights on.”
Shirley said community support has also
allowed the store to come a long way.
“(If customers are) looking for anything,
they’ll come in and ask us first. If we
haven’t got it, they’ll go somewhere else.
Or if I can’t get it sometimes I’ll say, ‘look
I’ll get it here tomorrow,’ and I’ll go and
find it and get it here for them.
“The community is just absolutely fabulous.
It’s just great to us. So supportive.”
Shirley hopes the store will continue for
as long as possible.

Bike fix up a
chance to bond
with neighbours
THE ARANUI Bike Fix Up is more than
just a weekly repair shop – it helps bring
the community together.
Each week, people head down to test
ride bikes, drop off donations, help with
repairs, connect with their community or
just have a chat and a cup of tea, organiser
Steven Muir said.
The free fix up has been running for the
past three years on Thursdays from 3pm at
the Aranui Baptist Church.
Between five and 10 bikes are donated
and repaired by volunteers each session.
Donated bikes are fixed up and given to
people who need them – mostly rangatahi.
“We were aware that Aranui doesn’t
have many bike shops and was in need of a
service to repair bikes or had need for new
bikes, which is why we started up here,”
Muir said.
“We launched initially as a trial, when
we found the perfect open space at the
church and a container was donated by
friends who returned from overseas. We’ve
been going ever since.”
“Recently our 1000th bike was donated,
which was an exciting milestone to reach.”
To celebrate the end of another
successful year last year, the fix up made
the most of the city council’s Summer
with Your Neighbours funding.
“We held a community barbecue, which
was a nice impetus to get together,” Muir
WORK: Steven Muir repairs a
said. “We often have kids coming to
the sessions, but don’t get to meet their
whānau, so having this funding helped to
make the end of year celebration happen.
Muir said he would be applying again
this year, and encouraged others to as well.
“It’s well worth it.”
DON’T EXPECT to see the usual
decorations if you’re driving through
Zonta’s winter Christmas trail on Sunday.
After a successful first run last year, 10
more homes around the city have been
decorated for the tour.
Two of them are in Ryman’s Northwood
and Kevin Hickman retirement
villages.
Zonta spokesperson Marie Kyle-
Stevenson said each house has themed
decorations which fit the homeowner’s
personal interests.
“One of the houses is going to focus
predominantly on shoes, so that’s going to
be fabulous.
“The woman actually loves shoes. So
there’ll be shoe trees and all sorts of
Kyle-Stevenson said activities, such as
shortbread-making and creating floral
Most of the money raised from the
Ecogas organics plant one step closer
• By Daniel Alvey
CHRISTCHURCH’S new
organic waste plant is now one
step closer.
Ecogas has lodged a resource
consent application with the
city council and Environment
Canterbury for its organics processing
plant in Hornby, which
will replace the troubled Bromley
facility in mid-2026.
The proposed plant would
be built on Aruhe Rd, a heavy
industrial-zoned area.
Both councils are currently
processing the application and
will decide whether it will be
open for public submissions.
Hornby Ward councillor Mark
Peters said it should be.
“Legally it’s up to the councils
as to how they weigh that up.
Personally, I would certainly
be open to the idea of it being
opened up to public consultation
and input.”
Peters was part of a city council
funded trip with other community
leaders in February to
visit two of the company’s North
Island plants.
“From what I picked up on the
tour, it was a case of yes there
was a little bit of an odour. That
was only in the very near vicinity
of the buildings, by the time you
got anywhere near a boundary
there wasn’t a skerrick of odour,”
he said.
Also on the trip was Greater
Hornby Residents Association
chair Derek Phelps.
He also said the consent
should be publicly notified.
“I think it
would be a
good idea, at
this stage they
(Ecogas) have
been very open
and up front
about everything
so I can’t
see where it
would hurt to be
Derek
Phelps
open for (public) submissions,”
Phelps said.
An Ecogas spokesperson said
it would be up to the councils to
decide how the consent is notified.
“Ecogas is committed to ongoing
dialogue with the local community
to understand its priorities
and to share information
about the facility and what it can
offer the Hornby community, the
city, and the region.
“However, Ecogas is equally
committed to delivering the
facility in a timely manner to
enable the existing organics
processing plant in Bromley
to be closed. Environment
Canterbury and Christchurch
City Council resource
consent processing teams will
determine the appropriate level
of notification required for a
development of this kind in a
heavy industrial zone.”
PLAN: An artist’s impression of the Ecogas processing plant, expected to open in 2026.
Below – the troubled Bromley plant.
Peters said
he understands
some people being
a little “gun
shy” following
the trouble at
the Bromley
plant, with residents
plagued Mark Peters
by odour issues
for more than a
decade.
Unlike Bromley, the Ecogas
plant is an enclosed process.
Said an Ecogas spokesperson:
“The Ecogas Ōtautahi
Christchurch Organics
Processing
Facility is a
bespoke renewable
energy and waste
management
solution, combining
anaerobic digestion
technology
and biomass
processing to
provide renewable
alternatives for
Canterbury
industry and
agriculture. The new facility
will be enclosed with no
outside storage or processing
Both councils are expected
to make their decisions in late
Huge first three months for Matatiki
MATATIKI HORNBY Centre
has had a bumper first three
months of operation.
Since opening in April,
Christchurch’s newest pool,
library and customer service
hub has welcomed over 80,000
visitors.
City council head of
recreation, sports and
events Nigel Cox said
the mixed used site has
been “a winner”.
“A typical visit could
include taking an aqua
fitness class at the pools,
picking up a new read at
the library, registering
the dog at the customer
service desk, and maybe even a
bit of 3D printing in the creative
space,” said Cox.
Cox said the new indoor pools
have had more than 30,000
visitors since April.
“New enrolments for
Swimsmart lessons have almost
hit 500 since we opened, which is
a great first three months,” said
Cox.
Aqua fitness classes are also
on offer, along with an inflatable
obstacle course on Sundays.
“We’ve had a strong start and
expect numbers to pick up even
further as we head towards the
warmer months,” he said.
The customer service desk has
recorded over 1800 inquiries
since opening.
Nigel Cox
The new library, which
relocated from its former site on
Goulding Ave, has seen a huge
spike in the number of items
cycling through each month.
“The number of items being
checked out or returned each
month has almost doubled.
Around 25,000 items are
coming through monthly,
up from roughly 13,000
at our previous site,” said
acting head of libraries
Elaine Sides.
The new creative spaces
have also been a hit,
with regular bookings
from schools and groups.
Drop-in sessions are also
propular, she said.
The Auahatanga Creative
Space is equipped with a wide
variety of tech equipment for
customers to design, build,
invent and create.
Sides said they are piloting
a new school programme,
Aquabots, where school teams
design and build underwater
vehicles to compete in themed
challenges with other teams
across the country.
“Between the pools and the
creative technologies suite,
Matatiki is the perfect spot to
introduce this fun challenge,”
she said.
50 years in the trade a major milestone
Five decades, 50 years, half a century – no
matter how you put it, that’s a long stretch of
time in anyone’s reckoning. And that’s how
long Greg Box, owner/operator of Amazing
Auto Electric, has been involved in the autoelectrical
trade.
It all started when he began as an apprentice
with Benson Bros in Gisborne on June 24,
1974, learning the nuts and bolts of the trade
and acquiring the skills needed to pursue
a successful career as an auto-electrical
engineer.
After spending almost seven years there,
Greg headed overseas, and over the following
eight years he worked in the motor trade in
the UK, and for a large part of the time, in
the mining industry in Alaska, Australia and
Africa.
Photographed in his Coleridge St
workshop, Greg Box is about to mark 50
years in the auto-electrical trade.
Family matters brought him back to New
Zealand, plus he was also keen to start his
own business here. With that in mind he
re-located to Christchurch in 1989, initially
working for a local firm, before launching
out as a sole trader in 1993.
A decade later he established his current
business, Amazing Auto Electric, opening a
workshop in Coleridge Street and employing
staff.
As a business it has proved a great success,
and while it is a challenging trade, and
one that can be stressful, it’s a trade he has
thoroughly enjoyed over the last 50 years. He
says for a person that enjoys working with
machinery and fixing things as he does, it’s an
ideal career.
“For an apprentice starting out it takes five
years to qualify, but for those that can stick to
it, it’s a great trade to be in.”
With auto-electrical systems being redesigned
every five to 10 years, ongoing
training with online and on-site courses is
also an important part of keeping up in the
industry, Greg says.
He is proud of the service he and his
two staff – one fully qualified and the
other undergoing his apprenticeship, offer
customers.
“Many of the problems people have with
Greg Box, left, with staff members Anton
Weir, centre, and Shane Gallop.
their vehicles are related to the electrical
system. When that warning light comes up on
the dashboard, it indicates there’s something
wrong, and we can fix it,” Greg says, adding,
“Over the years we have been blessed with the
best customers and staff any business could
wish for and we wouldn’t be here without
them.”
We have some of the latest and greatest
scanning tools and software available to
help diagnose and solve problems,
nine in total.
Amazing Auto Electric provides service for
all types of vehicle from trucks, to commercial
vans to family cars. Located at 65 Coleridge
Street, it is open 8am to 5pm Monday to
Friday.
And in just a few weeks’ time, Monday June
24 will be a red-letter day for owner Greg, as
he reaches his 50th anniversary in the trade, a
significant milestone by any measure.
