HANDY: Volunteer Anne Marchant is known for getting stuck in at Seaside Treasures, climbing on stools and up ladders for co-operative store
founder Shirley Smith.
Age no barrier for 90-year-old Anne
• By Isabella Adams
AGE DOES NOT stop a
90-year-old from climbing
ladders at a co-operative
shop celebrating its 10-year
anniversary.
Anne Marchant volunteers
at Seaside Treasures in New
Brighton.
Her involvement started
when she wanted to sell her
handmade calendars at the
shop, which stocks crafts made
by members of the community
as well as other donated goods.
Anne was told if she volunteered
for a day, then she could.
So she did, and she’s still
there eight years later.
Seaside Treasures founder
Shirley Smith said Anne is “unbelievable”.
“She climbs up ladders, she
puts things up. It’s amazing.
Everyone else is a bit scared to
get up on stools and things, but
no, not our Anne.”
Anne repairs knick-kancks.
She also came up with the
idea to organise all the shop’s
buttons into colour-coded
boxes.
Despite all the tasks Anne
said she actually prefers “being
lazy”, but she does them to fulfil
a need.
“Well, there’s so many little
things that need doing. It’s a
little bit risky in a way that you
see something that needs doing,
and then you see something else
that needs doing, and you see
something else . . . it’s nice seeing
the finished result.”
Seaside Treasures opened on
July 14, 2014.
Shirley had moved back to
New Zealand after spending
16 years teaching english in
Turkey, when she came up with
the idea for the shop.
“I’d just come home from
Turkey and thought, oh, what
can I do to help New Brighton?
“I’d brought a lot of things
home that I needed to pass on,
and I did a bit of research and
discovered that a community
co-operative shop would be a
great thing for New Brighton.”
Seaside Treasures started with
seven volunteers and two rooms
in its Brighton Mall store.
Ten years later, there are
12 volunteers and seven
rooms filled with crafts from
the community and items
requested by customers.
Shirley cannot believe the
store has made it this far.
“It’s just absolutely a dream.
“(When it started) I thought,
well give it a year and it’ll
maybe fizzle out. And here
we are now, 10 years later, it’s
unbelievable.”
Shirley owes the store’s success
to its volunteers.
“Dedication with the
volunteers, working together,
and a great bunch of people,
and seeing the rewards.”
These “rewards” are the
donations they make to local
organisations.
Seaside Treasures has
donated between $4500 and
$10,000 to organisations and
charities in east Christchurch
every year since it opened.
The New Brighton Surf Life
Saving Club received a $1000
donation in February.
Chairperson Lachlan Hill
said the club is grateful for
every donation it receives.
“Our staff are volunteers
and they give up a lot of time
to the club.
“Any money from the
community means a lot to
us and it goes it goes very far
boats) and helping around the
club just to keep the lights on.”
Shirley said community support
has also allowed the store
to come a long way.
“(If customers are) looking
for anything, they’ll come in
and ask us first. If we haven’t
got it, they’ll go somewhere
else. Or if I can’t get it
sometimes I’ll say, ‘look I’ll get
it here tomorrow,’ and I’ll go
and find it and get it here for
them.
“The community is just
absolutely fabulous. It’s just
great to us. So supportive.”
Shirley hopes the store
will continue for as long
as possible.
Bike fix up a chance to
bond with neighbours
THE ARANUI Bike Fix Up
is more than just a weekly
repair shop – it helps bring the
community together.
Each week, people head down
to test ride bikes, drop off donations,
help with repairs, connect
with their community or just
have a chat and a cup of tea,
organiser Steven Muir said.
The free fix up has been running
for the past three years
on Thursdays from 3pm at the
Aranui Baptist Church.
Between five and 10 bikes
are donated and repaired by
volunteers each session. Donated
bikes are fixed up and given to
people who need them – mostly
rangatahi.
“We were aware that Aranui
doesn’t have many bike shops
and was in need of a service to
repair bikes or had need for new
bikes, which is why we started up
here,” Muir said.
“We launched initially as a
trial, when we found the perfect
open space at the church and a
container was donated by friends
who returned from overseas.
We’ve been going ever since.”
“Recently our 1000th bike was
donated, which was an exciting
milestone to reach.”
Muir said if people are interested
in helping out, the group
is always happy to receive donations.
To celebrate the end of another
successful year last year, the fix
up made the most of the city
council’s Summer with Your
Neighbours funding.
“We held a community barbecue,
which was a nice impetus to
get together,” Muir said.
“We often have kids coming to
the sessions, but don’t get to meet
their whānau, so having this
funding helped to make the end
of year celebration happen.”
Muir said he will be applying for
funding again for this summer.
“Anyone who wants to bring
their community together should
put an application in, it’s well
worth it.”
The Summer with your
Neighbours programme aims
to bring people together to
celebrate the unique and diverse
DON’T EXPECT to see the
usual decorations if you’re
driving through Zonta’s winter
Christmas trail on Sunday.
After a successful first run last
year, 10 more homes around the
city have been decorated for the
tour.
Two of them are in Ryman’s
Northwood and Kevin Hickman
retirement villages.
Zonta spokesperson Marie
Kyle-Stevenson said each house
has themed decorations which
fit the homeowner’s personal
interests.
“One of the houses is going to
focus predominantly on shoes,
so that’s going to be fabulous.
“The woman actually loves
shoes. So there’ll be shoe trees
and all sorts of things.”
Kyle-Stevenson said activities,
such as shortbread-making and
creating floral displays, will be
held during the tour.
Most of the money raised
from the event will go to the
Canterbury Charity Hospital
and children’s charity Foster
Hope. A small portion of the
funds will go to some on Zonta’s
international charities.
The first winter Christmas
trail last year raised $20,000.
The trail will open at 10am
and finish at 4pm, with the last
entry at 3.30pm.
NIGHTS SLEEP?
Sleep is so important to feeling and performing our best. Long
term poor quality sleep is associated with many chronic diseases
Fixing key transport routes a priority
A TOP CONCERN for east
side residents has been the poor
condition of roads and footpaths.
Last year’s annual residents
survey showed 31.5 per cent of
respondents were satisfied with
the city’s footpaths. The roads
fared even worse, with 28 per cent
satisfaction. Roads and footpaths
ranked among the top three
issues for Coastal Ward residents.
One road I’ve received a lot of
feedback about due to its poor
condition and many temporary
repairs is Bower Ave from New
Brighton to Rookwood Ave.
I was advised, despite concerns,
there were no further planned
improvements listed on the city
council’s works schedule for the
foreseeable future.
It helps when locals lend
support to lobbying for change
and with joint advocacy from
local businesses like Hopman
Motors, I was able to successfully
advocate for this road to be
Coastal Side
Celeste Donovan
moved forward into the budget
for this financial year – ten
years ahead of the previous road
renewals schedule.
Bower Ave has undergone
a transformation with a new
asphalt smoothing treatment
over the existing chipseal surface,
improving ride quality and
reducing vibrations for residents.
Alongside these changes,
footpaths have been upgraded,
and safety improvements made
to the Bower\Rookwood Ave
roundabout which are already
showing signs of reducing
incidents.
Said Jeremy Waldron of
Hopman Motors: “It’s great to
finally have a positive outcome
for Bower Ave – a key route that
so many east side residents and
businesses use every day. The
asphalt smoothing technique has
now made the road functional
and a pleasure to drive on.”
Elsewhere, there’s been progress
SAFER STREETS: Celeste Donovan with Jeremy Waldron,
left, and Andre Hopman from Hopman Motors at the new
and improved Bower\Rookwood Ave roundabout.
including improvements to
Rawhiti Domain carparks and
footpaths.
While there is more to do,
this completed work will greatly
enhance accessibility and parking
for almost 20 local clubs and
organisations from American
Football to the New Brighton
Silver Band.
Looking ahead, there’s other
significant works in the pipeline.
In August, as chair of the hearings
panel I will be presenting to
council the panel’s report on the
Pages Rd bridge project. These
plans will not only replace the
earthquake-damaged bridge but
will upgrade eight nearby roads
which are in extremely poor
condition, giving a much-needed
boost to the area.
The Waitai Coastal-Burwood-
Linwood Community Board is
finalising a $6 million upgrade to
Marine Pde following community
input, set to come before the
board in September following the
evaluation of submissions from
around the area.
Pages Rd bridge
As your local councillor, I’ve been
pushing hard for the Pages Rd
Bridge since being elected.
This bridge, originally opened
in 1931, connects the city to New
Brighton across the Ōtākaro/
Avon River.
Unfortunately, it suffered
significant damage during the
earthquakes and is currently
classified as earthquake-prone,
operating at just 15-20 per cent of
the required standard.
A replacement bridge is crucial
for our community. Not only
will it offer improved resilience
to seismic events, but will also
increase capacity for emergency
evacuations. It will be built at a
higher level to account for sea
level rise and incorporate future
flood stopbanks along the river.
The proposed bridge
replacement enhances transport
connectivity by linking New
Brighton to the city, as figures
indicate an increasing traffic flow
CRUCIAL: The earthquake-damaged Pages Rd bridge is a
vital connection to New Brighton and needs to be replaced.
in and out of the coastal suburb.
The popularity of the seaside
settlement is evident from
the influx of visitors and new
residential apartments, and a
future-proof bridge will provide
crucial emergency access during
natural disasters, as well as
improving walking and cycling
access.
Currently, the Pages Rd
approach is low-lying and prone
to flooding, with an undulating
carriageway and drainage issues,
much to the frustration of regular
users.
There has been quite a bit of
recent publicity around the bridge
and here’s an update on where we
stand. This year, we completed
community consultation on the
bridge. As chair of the hearings
panel, along with councillors Sara
Templeton and Kelly Barber, we
considered all the community
feedback. Our final report will be
presented to the city council on
August 7.
Following the council’s
approval of the proposed scheme
design, staff will start the detailed
design phase.
This includes design, site
investigations, land purchase and
statutory approvals. This work
is planned for 2024-2025, with
construction planned for FY26 to
FY28.
The project is included in the
council’s Long Term Plan budget,
meaning we can proceed with
the planning work and apply
for a contribution from the New
Zealand Transport Agency.
Initially, the project was
downgraded from the top priority
project in 2021 to No 12 in the
draft Regional Land Transport
Plan. I worked with the council
to highlight this project as one
of the city’s top priorities, and
successfully it raised to No 4
across the region.
Looking ahead, the NZTA
board will review the bridge
project later this year and we are
working with it on the business
case. Changes in transport
policies might delay the process,
but we expect updates on any
NZTA subsidy by September.
I think the cost of replacing
the bridge to improve emergency
access and resilience of essential
infrastructure in the New
Brighton area shouldn’t just be
paid by the ratepayers.
Together with Christchurch
East MP Reuben Davidson, I’m
pushing for NZTA or central
government to help fund this
project, just like they do with
other important transport
projects across the country.
Let’s keep asking for a fair deal
for our city and community!
with support to lift them
out of poverty.
Families in Ukraine
need your help!
The Sechka family live in a rural area
of Sarny region, western Ukraine, in
an old dilapidated house. Mykhailo,
40, and his wife Nadiya, 31, work hard to
provide for their family. They face a massive
challenge as three of their five children have
severe disabilities. One of their daughters
is unable to walk at all. The health of
their children means they need medical
examinations, check-ups, and treatment.
Which costs money.
Mykhailo used to work in forestry, but
when the war began, he lost most of his
wages then he had to quit. Since then, he
has focused on farming and keeps cows,
pigs, geese, and poultry to survive.
Son Mieko loves his parents and sees they
are hardworking. Mykhailo must cultivate
a lot of land to grow forage for the animals,
and vegetables and grain for the family. He
was using an old tractor that he bought 15
years ago. The tractor is 50 years old and
required constant repair. Mykhailo says that
after each working day he had to repair it
and it wasn’t worth the money. Since then,
the old tractor became a place where Mieko
and his siblings play.
Despite Mykhailo and Nadiya’s efforts,
the family’s situation became very difficult.
The loss of income, health issues and the
ongoing war has taken its toll.
Mieko’s family need help with resources,
such as tools and machinery, so they can
grow food for themselves.
Right now, the Ukrainian economy
is shrinking, and inflation is rising. So,
supporting families just like Mieko’s with a
self-sufficiency project will be a lifeline.
Mieko’s anxiety and uncertainty and have
resulted in physical and psychological
issues. There is no doubt that the impact
of war will be felt by his family and many
others for years to come.
Support MiSSion Without BorderS
At Mission Without Borders, we regularly reach
out to Kiwis who respond by giving, praying,
and offering their unwavering support.
If you would like to help, here are
some ways we can make a difference
together:
1. A gift of $30 will supply an emergency
food and hygiene parcel to help
displaced and vulnerable people in the
Ukraine.
2. Sponsor a family: we have families
in Ukraine waiting right now for
sponsorship. You can enable and
encourage a whole family to lift
themselves out of poverty and become
self-sufficient for $45 a month.
3. Consider donating towards a selfsufficiency
project for a family like
Mieko’s. This will give them the
opportunity to not only survive but
thrive ‒ $25 will provide a packet of
seeds to grow life-sustaining fruits
and vegetables.
50 years in the trade a major milestone
Five decades, 50 years, half a century – no
matter how you put it, that’s a long stretch of
time in anyone’s reckoning. And that’s how
long Greg Box, owner/operator of Amazing
Auto Electric, has been involved in the autoelectrical
trade.
It all started when he began as an apprentice
with Benson Bros in Gisborne on June 24,
1974, learning the nuts and bolts of the trade
and acquiring the skills needed to pursue
a successful career as an auto-electrical
engineer.
After spending almost seven years there,
Greg headed overseas, and over the following
eight years he worked in the motor trade in
the UK, and for a large part of the time, in
the mining industry in Alaska, Australia and
Africa.
Photographed in his Coleridge St
workshop, Greg Box is about to mark 50
years in the auto-electrical trade.
Family matters brought him back to New
Zealand, plus he was also keen to start his
own business here. With that in mind he
re-located to Christchurch in 1989, initially
working for a local firm, before launching
out as a sole trader in 1993.
A decade later he established his current
business, Amazing Auto Electric, opening a
workshop in Coleridge Street and employing
staff.
As a business it has proved a great success,
and while it is a challenging trade, and
one that can be stressful, it’s a trade he has
thoroughly enjoyed over the last 50 years. He
says for a person that enjoys working with
machinery and fixing things as he does, it’s an
ideal career.
“For an apprentice starting out it takes five
years to qualify, but for those that can stick to
it, it’s a great trade to be in.”
With auto-electrical systems being redesigned
every five to 10 years, ongoing
training with online and on-site courses is
also an important part of keeping up in the
industry, Greg says.
He is proud of the service he and his
two staff – one fully qualified and the
other undergoing his apprenticeship, offer
customers.
“Many of the problems people have with
Greg Box, left, with staff members Anton
Weir, centre, and Shane Gallop.
their vehicles are related to the electrical
system. When that warning light comes up on
the dashboard, it indicates there’s something
wrong, and we can fix it,” Greg says, adding,
“Over the years we have been blessed with the
best customers and staff any business could
wish for and we wouldn’t be here without
them.”
We have some of the latest and greatest
scanning tools and software available to
help diagnose and solve problems,
nine in total.
Amazing Auto Electric provides service for
all types of vehicle from trucks, to commercial
vans to family cars. Located at 65 Coleridge
Street, it is open 8am to 5pm Monday to
Friday.
And in just a few weeks’ time, Monday June
24 will be a red-letter day for owner Greg, as
he reaches his 50th anniversary in the trade, a
significant milestone by any measure.
