Commercial Driving<br />

CDL Hazardous Materials Training :<br />

This online class is for anyone who handles hazmat and is<br />

required by the regulations to have up-to-date training. If<br />

you are a CDL holder and would like to obtain the Hazmat<br />

endorsement, this class is for you. This class is ELDT certified.<br />

We will walk you through the critical information hazmat drivers<br />

must know. This class will include Hazard Classification (Classes<br />

and Divisions), Hazardous Materials Table, Shipping Papers,<br />

Marking and Placards, Loading and Segregation, Transportation<br />

Safety Awareness. This class will also walk you through the<br />

requirements you will need to go through. Upon completion,<br />

you will receive a certificate, verifying that training was<br />

complete.<br />

Class A Commercial Driver’s License Certificate<br />

(CDL)<br />

Looking to start a career in one of the fastest growing<br />

occupations? Hawkeye’s Class A Commercial Driver’s License<br />

(CDL) training program is designed for adults who would like<br />

to train for a high-demand career in a short-term time frame.<br />

We train on 10 speeds and automatics. The program focuses on<br />

developing safe driving skills including backing, turning, and<br />

driving on rural and suburban roads. You will receive handson<br />

training using full-size semi-tractor/trailers and virtual<br />

driving simulators. You must become proficient in every skill<br />

before testing. As soon as proficiency tasks are met two times<br />

without instruction, you may test. You have up to six weeks to<br />

become proficient. Upon being proficient, you will take your<br />

DOT vehicle inspection, skills, and driving tests at Hawkeye to<br />

obtain your Class A CDL. You will receive daily training on your<br />

schedule, choose your times: morning 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.,<br />

and/or afternoon 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and/or evening 5:00 p.m.<br />

to 9:00 p.m. Graduates can find employment in a variety of areas<br />

including, but not limited to, a truck driver, spotter, shag driver,<br />

and many more. There are many steps before you register, call<br />

319-296-4286 to get those steps. Must have (prior to class) CLP<br />

(Commercial Learner Permit) after you obtain your permit, you<br />

must register with FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse. Then<br />

Do you currently hold a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s<br />

License (CDL) and want to get back into truck driving? Bring<br />

your skills back up to speed with this 40-hour, individualized,<br />

School or Passenger Bus License<br />

Advanced school bus training will take your driving skills to the<br />

next level. Whether you are looking for a new occupation or<br />

want to experience the great feeling of helping people get to<br />

their desired destinations, this course is for you. Using an actual<br />

school bus and driving simulators you will obtain the skills to<br />

drive a bus in all types of situations. During this course you will<br />

learn to drive a school bus in many rural and urban situations.<br />

You will learn to maneuver, the school bus around corners, over<br />

railroad tracks, through backing exercises, and many other<br />

real-life experiences that occur while driving. You will complete<br />

this class with the confidence of driving a full-length bus with<br />

hands-on experiences under the direction of experienced bus<br />

drivers. Class will conclude with the confidence to pass DOT<br />

tests and obtain a bus driving position. This course is much<br />

more than your average training. You will actually be driving in a<br />

variety of “real life situations.” Note: You must have your school<br />

bus permit which will allow you to drive on the roadway, as well<br />

as your school bus and passenger DOT written tests.<br />

Driver’s <strong>Education</strong><br />

Hawkeye’s High School Driver <strong>Education</strong> Program is designed<br />

to help the beginner driver develop the knowledge, skill<br />

and attitude necessary to become a safe, responsible driver.<br />

Hawkeye Community College provides 30 hours of classroom<br />

instruction, 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, and 6<br />

hours of in-car practicum. This program meets the requirements<br />

of the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) and Motor<br />

Vehicles Division (DMV) for individuals to obtain a graduated<br />

driver’s license (GDL). The student will be required to be<br />

proficient in their driving at the end of our course or will be<br />

required to drive with the DOT to get their license. Students<br />

must have the ability to schedule after-school and week-end<br />

driving times, and they must bring their permit to every class.<br />

The student must have a minimum of 10 hours of driving time<br />

before the class begins. Attendance is required for ALL sessions.<br />

No exceptions. Students must have an Iowa driver’s permit<br />

before enrolling. Fee can be waived or reduced for students who<br />

qualify in the Waterloo Community School District. Mandatory<br />

Zoom Orientation will be held for parent/legal guardian<br />

and student, notification of day and time will be sent after<br />

24-Hour OWI Weekend<br />

This class is for those that were arrested for an OWI, and are<br />

currently over the age of 18. The class is either required by the<br />

courts or used in place of 48 hours jail time. It does include the<br />

requirements of the Department of Transportation. Check-in<br />

will be between 4:30pm and 5:30pm on Friday. You will not be<br />

Motorcycle: Basic Rider Course<br />

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Basic Rider Course<br />

is a learn-to-ride education and training safety program that<br />

consists of the online MSF Basic eCourse to address basic<br />

motorcycle knowledge, five hours of classroom instruction with<br />

a RiderCoach to address rider perception and risk management,<br />

and 10 hours of on-cycle, hands-on instruction. Motorcycles<br />

are provided for use during the course. Prior to the first day of<br />

class you will need to read the Rider Handbook and complete<br />

the eCourse online. Price of the eCourse is included and student<br />

will receive an email two weeks before the class start date with<br />

a redemption code. Riders must be able to balance a bicycle to<br />

participate in the riding portion of the course and successfully<br />

complete a riding skills test. This course does have a written<br />

and a riding skills test. Successful completion of BOTH tests is<br />

required to receive a DOT certificate of completion. A course<br />

completion card may provide an insurance discount. This course<br />

is required by Iowa law to obtain a motorcycle operator’s license<br />

for all residents under the age of 18. If you are a minor, you must<br />

have a valid driver’s permit and you must have written consent<br />

from your parent or guardian at time of registration. If under age<br />

of 18, registrations are done in person at Hawkeye’s Cedar <strong>Fall</strong>s<br />

Center.<br />

Motorcycle: Returning Rider Course<br />

Refresh your riding skills with this course that combines the<br />

elements of the Basic Rider Course in one day. This program<br />

consists of the online MSF Basic eCourse to address basic<br />

motorcycle knowledge, with a 1 day hands -on instruction. Prior<br />

to class you will need to complete the e-Course online and print<br />

a completion certificate. Bring your eCourse certificate, full<br />

finger gloves, long sleeve shirt or jacket, long pants, and sturdy<br />

over-the ankle footwear to class. Helmets and eye protection<br />

must be worn and will be provided if you do not provide your<br />

own. You will not be allowed to ride without this equipment.<br />

Riders must be able to balance a bicycle to participate in the<br />

riding portion. If you possess the basic skills but have not been<br />

riding for a while, this course is for you. This class includes a<br />

knowledge and skills test and may allow you to receive your<br />

motorcycle license without having to drive your motorcycle at<br />

the Department of Motor Vehicles. Motorcycles are provided for<br />

use during this courses, however, personal motorcycles may be<br />

used if they meet requirements. This course does have a written<br />

and a riding skills test. If student is under 18 years of age they<br />

must register in person at Hawkeye’s Cedar <strong>Fall</strong>s Center with a<br />

Iowa Independent Used Auto Dealer Update<br />

This course is the basic course on understanding dealer<br />

responsibilities. This class will serve as a refresher course and<br />

will teach the requirements of being an auto dealer in Iowa<br />

and how to maintain a dealer’s license. Updates of changes<br />

to state and federal law, rule and regulation will be provided.<br />

The trainer will discuss new laws enacted during the most<br />

recent legislative session impacting auto dealers as well as<br />

providing new information from federal and state agencies<br />

pertaining to the auto industry. Dealers will be encouraged to<br />

bring forth areas of concern to assist with possible solutions<br />

to these concerns. Dealers will review videos from the staff of<br />

Leadership plays an integral part in the development of<br />

businesses and industries as well as organizations within<br />

communities. To that end, Hawkeye Community College and<br />

Buchanan County Economic Development Commission have<br />

teamed up to provide an exceptional leadership program with<br />

extraordinary presenters. The classes will help participants<br />

Support Curriculum. Students will be prepared for certification<br />

as a Prepare to Care Health Support Professional, and<br />

prepare paramedics to provide advanced critical care during<br />

This course prepares the LPN to perform procedures related<br />

to the expanded scope of intravenous therapy in a licensed<br />

renal dialysis unit. Major emphasis is placed on the<br />

specialized skills needed to provide IV therapy for clients age<br />

12 or older and weighing 80 pounds or more. The textbook is<br />

included in the course fee. To be eligible to enroll in the course,<br />

the licensed practical nurse shall hold a current unrestricted<br />

Iowa license to practice as a licensed practical nurse and<br />

documentation of 1040 hours of practice as a licensed practical<br />

Fundamentals of Crew Leadership is designed to support<br />

leadership training for front line construction leaders, such as<br />

crew leaders and foreman, to ensure their crews contribute<br />

safely and productively to active projects. We will cover<br />

National Center for Construction <strong>Education</strong> & Research<br />

(NCCER) Fundamentals of Crew Leadership curriculum which<br />

This course expands upon foundational hydraulic skills,<br />

providing in-depth knowledge of hydraulic components and<br />

Office Hours<br />

The Business and Community <strong>Education</strong> office is located at the Cedar <strong>Fall</strong>s<br />

Center, 5330 Nordic Drive, Cedar <strong>Fall</strong>s. The office is open from 8:00 a.m. to<br />

4:30 p.m.<br />

Enrollment<br />

Pre-registration required. Register through Hawkeye Business and<br />

Community <strong>Education</strong> prior to class start. Payment is required at the time<br />

of registration.Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. You are<br />

officially enrolled once we receive your completed registration form and<br />

payment. Please register early!<br />

Children in Class<br />

Children are not allowed in class, unless noted in the class description or<br />

the class is designed for children (ex. kid’s camp).<br />

We value and encourage your input at any time. Evaluations are<br />

Technical Program Policies<br />

Applying Credits to a Technical Program at Hawkeye<br />

If it is determined that the course(s) taken are similar in course content<br />

to a required course in one of Hawkeye’s technical programs, a copy of<br />

your transcript will be submitted to the respective Hawkeye academic<br />

department for evaluation. It is the department’s discretion to accept or<br />

not accept the credit for the program.<br />

Student Conduct<br />

Hawkeye Community College students are expected to obey federal, state<br />

and local laws and regulations; show respect for properly constituted<br />

authority; and exhibit and maintain integrity and honor in all matters<br />

related to Hawkeye. Student behavior which, after due process, is found to<br />

be disruptive to classes, which interferes with the rights of others or which<br />

damages property, may result in probation or suspension from Hawkeye.<br />

Each student shall be expected to behave in a mature, adult manner. At<br />

all times, the rights of all students and Hawkeye personnel must be the<br />

HIGH SCHOOL COMPLETION<br />

The High School Completion Program offers standards-based<br />

instruction to prepare students for a High School Equivalency<br />

diploma and to improve their basic skills in reading, writing, and<br />

mathematics. In addition, digital literacy, financial literacy, and<br />

transition to college assistance are components of the program.<br />

Punctual and regular attendance is necessary for success.<br />

Students have the option of attending all classes remotely.<br />

The High School Completion Program offers three pathways to<br />

earn a High School Equivalency Diploma. Students can enroll in<br />

the HiSET pathway, the High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED)<br />

by Credit pathway, or the HSED by Foreign Postsecondary degree<br />

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING (ELL)<br />

English language instruction assists individuals of limited English<br />

proficiency to learn the English language. Students are required<br />

to register and take an entry assessment to determine the<br />

appropriate class level. ELL classes are available in seven different<br />

levels. Classes meet at the Van G. Miller Adult Learning Center, 120<br />

Jefferson Street, Waterloo.<br />

Punctual and regular attendance is absolutely necessary for<br />

success. Students, please be on time and attend class every day!<br />

Students have the option of attending classes remotely.<br />

Integrated <strong>Education</strong> and Training (IET) class. We offer Commercial<br />

Driver License (CDL) IET, Hospitality Management I-BEST, and<br />

Basic Construction Skills IELCE (ELL only). We also offer Computer<br />

Numerical Control (CNC) I-BEST, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)<br />

I-BEST, and Child Health, Safety, and Nutrition (IELCE). Register for<br />

ELL or HSC to qualify.<br />

FAMILY LITERACY – FREE<br />

Parents enrolled in Hawkeye’s High School Completion Program<br />

or English Language Learning Program with a child 18 or younger<br />

living at home may register for the Family Literacy Program<br />

(FLP). The FLP provides programming for parents who seek to<br />

strengthen their role as their child’s first teacher as well as free<br />

children’s books and materials. The program also provides oneon-one<br />

assistance to parents interested in transferring to college<br />
