presidential campaign. This<br />

powerful show of support came<br />

Zoom call, generating about<br />

$2 million for Harris and<br />

sending a resounding message<br />

of solidarity and resolve.<br />

<strong>The</strong> men’s call, led by<br />

Martin and co-hosted by<br />

Bakari Sellers and others, was<br />

a powerful statement against<br />

former President Donald<br />

Trump, who has been twice<br />

impeached and convicted of 34<br />

felonies. Martin, visibly moved,<br />

tweeted, “I have no words. And<br />

not just because I’m tired. My<br />

that 53,862 people registered<br />

video call. We raised $1.3<br />

for a special event paying tribute to<br />

the late Congressman John Lewis<br />

and highlighting the significance of<br />

Black votes in shaping our future. <strong>The</strong><br />

candlelight memorial and fish fry took<br />

place on July 17th at Burrows Electric<br />

Co. in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.<br />

<strong>The</strong> event featured free food and<br />

beverages, courtesy of Pleasure of<br />

the Sea, who donated fish for the<br />

occasion. Attendees lit candles and<br />

sang the Black National Anthem, “Lift<br />

Every Voice and Sing,” before hearing<br />

from candidates who spoke about the<br />

importance of this year’s election.<br />

<strong>The</strong> memorial honored John<br />

Lewis’ tireless work in the Civil<br />

Rights Movement and his unwavering<br />

said it commends Biden’s<br />

leadership in “passing the<br />

torch to Vice President<br />

Harris, who has a strong<br />

record of standing with<br />

Jewish Americans.”<br />

<strong>The</strong> group said it was<br />

proud to endorse Harris’s<br />

“historic candidacy for<br />

president” and remained<br />

deeply committed to<br />

ensuring the Democrats<br />

hold the White House, win<br />

back the House, and defend<br />

the Democratic majority in<br />

the Senate.<br />

Chaos! <strong>The</strong> Republican<br />

Party policies related to gun<br />

safety and access almost<br />

got their nominee killed –<br />

yet they pulled out their old<br />

gaslighting play book and<br />

found a way to blame Joe<br />

Biden knowing full well the<br />

perpetrator was a republican.<br />

It was the Republican<br />

nominee and his surrogates’<br />

aggressive rhetoric that<br />

infused vitriol into our politics<br />

lighting. the match that fuels<br />

mental instability. Joe Biden<br />

could have piled on with<br />

negativity; instead he called<br />

to make sure he was alright.<br />

quickly denounced the act<br />

that nearly took the man’s<br />

life and asked the same from<br />

the country. Those acts of<br />

kindness and humanity were<br />

repaid with name calling and<br />

ugly politics. It’s a special<br />

kind of man that couldn’t even<br />

recognize or graciously accept<br />

the decency of Joe Biden’s<br />

out reached hand. Instead,<br />

he held up his fist while<br />

being lifted and consoled by a<br />

female Secret Service Officer<br />

his party loves to denigrate<br />

and quickly returned to<br />

escalating the incendiary<br />

rhetoric. Even more egregious,<br />

blasphemously touting his<br />

escape from death as divine<br />

intervention. What a human<br />

being! Whether you are a<br />

democrat or a republican,<br />

decent human beings - and<br />

there are decent republicans<br />

- reject this kind of ugliness.<br />

newspaper last week was<br />

Boy oh boy, if my favorite lunch<br />

lady, Ms. Monica, had to tell it, I stay<br />

hungry. Crogman Campus Eatery is not just a café; it’s a<br />

hub where University you can have long more conversations, favorable adapt, weather adjust, prevails.<br />

and get to know what is now your extended family. Many<br />

people opt for food delivery services like Door Dash, and<br />

I’ve done that myself at times. However, there’s nothing<br />

like the experience at the café, or the buffet as I like to call<br />

it. <strong>The</strong> Engagement<br />

café is open late, until 10 p.m. at the latest, and is<br />

staffed by the kindest and most attentive people I’ve ever<br />

met.<br />

As freshmen, it’s required to get the all-inclusive meal plan,<br />

which includes 4 meal swipes and 100 dining dollars that<br />

can be University’s<br />

used at various spots like our Panther smoothie for<br />

the hottest days and tasteful acai bowls, Jazzman’s Café,<br />

or the best wing spot on campus, Wicked Wings. Missing<br />

out on the campus dining experience and opting for food<br />

delivery is a waste because, as a freshman a meal plan<br />

is mandatory. Upperclassmen have options. This setup<br />

encourages you to try new foods with new people and<br />

make contacts with the staff.<br />

Fried Chicken Wednesdays are a miss, but Taco Tuesdays<br />

are unmissable. I got so excited when it was it time to<br />

swipe that Paw Card, which is mandatory—otherwise, you’ll be turned away from the line.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se two days of the week are particularly popular, so I didn’t want to arrive after 11 a.m.<br />

<strong>The</strong> lines were long, so be mindful of when your favorite meals are being served at your<br />

institution.<br />

Engaging with campus dining is more than just about eating; it’s about building relationships<br />

and creating memories. From the friendly staff who learn your favorite dishes to the new<br />

friends you make over shared meals, the campus eatery is a cornerstone of your college<br />

experience. So as you prepare find inspiration for college, remember through that the staying downtime.”<br />

Black Music Appreciation Series<br />

(TriceEdneyWire.com) - Anyone conscious<br />

of Black progress during the 1960s, ‘70s and<br />

‘80s clearly remembers songs like James<br />

Brown’s “I’m Black and I’m Proud,” Marvin<br />

Gay’s “What’s Going On?” and Stevie Wonder’s<br />

popular “Happy Birthday” song to the<br />

assassinated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in<br />

pursuit of a national holiday in his honor.<br />

And then, there was that unforgettable 1963<br />

song composed and sang by singer-song writer<br />

and pianist Nina Simone that the Library of<br />

Congress has described as a “biting song about racial injustice”<br />

that was “more commentary than anthem”. <strong>The</strong> song, “Mississippi<br />

Goddam” was written in response to the June 12, 1963 assassination<br />

of civil rights activist Medgar Evers in Jackson, Mississippi and the<br />

killing of the four little girls in the Ku Klux Klan bombing of the<br />

16th Street Baptist Church<br />

in Birmingham, Alabama<br />

on September 15 that year.<br />

It was songs like these<br />

- among many others -<br />

that pushed for justice and<br />

social change by putting<br />

the words in the mouths<br />

of people, words that were<br />

already in their hearts,<br />

the words that oppressors<br />

needed to hear. <strong>The</strong> history<br />

and tradition of Rhythm<br />

and Blues, Soul music and,<br />

yes, even some Rap music<br />

– minus the misogyny<br />

and flagrant use of the<br />

N-word – have continued<br />

as a 21st Century weapon<br />

against racial inequality,<br />

White supremacy and a<br />

tool for the dismantling of<br />

structural racism, economic<br />

oppression, and the end to<br />

police brutality.<br />

In 2024, key artists,<br />

such as Academy Award<br />

winning John Legend, are<br />

clearly following the lead of<br />

these predecessors, who not<br />

only advocated for justice in<br />

their words, but used their<br />

money philanthropically<br />

toward advancement in the<br />

Democrats and the rest of the nation are<br />

once again turning to Black women to lead<br />

the charge in saving democracy, and they<br />

have again stepped to the plate and swung for<br />

the fences. Following President Joe Biden’s<br />

announcement that he would not run for the<br />

Democratic nomination, the network Win with<br />

Black Women organized a Zoom call to show<br />

how prepared and determined Black women<br />

were to take on this enormous challenge. <strong>The</strong><br />

call, held on Sunday, was a powerful display<br />

of unity and determination, with Black<br />

women leaders from across the nation voicing<br />

their unwavering support for Vice President<br />

Kamala Harris.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Zoom call reportedly drew an<br />

astounding 40,000 attendees and featured<br />

an impressive lineup of speakers, including<br />

Reps. Joyce Beatty, Maxine Waters, and<br />

Jasmine Crockett. <strong>The</strong> leaders passionately<br />

After exiting the race, President Biden’s<br />

made clear that his vice president should be<br />

the party’s nominee. “My very first decision as<br />

the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala<br />

Harris as my vice president,” Biden said. “And<br />

it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today, I<br />

want to offer my full support and endorsement<br />

for Kamala to be our party’s nominee this<br />

year. Democrats, it’s time to come together<br />

and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”<br />

A Florida grandmother is back home after she was<br />

arrested in Turks and Caicos for having two bullets<br />

in her luggage while trying to travel back to the U.S.,<br />

Sharitta Grier was visiting Turks and Caicos with her daughter for a surprise Mother’s Day<br />

vacation in May when she was stopped by security at Howard Hamilton International Airport.<br />

Two bullets were found in her carry-on bag. Grier pleaded guilty to one count of possession of<br />

ammunition. She was handed down a 23-week suspended sentence and a $1,500 fine.<br />

Following her arrest, Grier was released on a $15,000 bail, but she was ordered to stay on<br />

the island until her case was completed.<br />

<strong>The</strong> grandmother made it back to Orlando International Airport last week.<br />

“I’m just excited about everything, ready to get back home to my family and my grandkids,”<br />

Grier said. “It’s been a long time coming, but, you know, God is still good. I’ve seen the hand of<br />

God move during this whole journey, so I’m satisfied.”<br />

Grier previously said she was unaware that she had ammunition in her bag. She noted that<br />

she stores ammunition away from her grandchildren when they visit her, so the bullets may<br />

have fallen in her luggage while she was moving things around.<br />

“Only thing that I can think of was me putting it up in the top of my closet, the ammunition<br />

fell out the box inside of the, out the box inside of the suitcase, I’m gonna say carry-on and fell<br />

up under that flap in the carry-on,” Grier said.<br />

“It was no way for me to see it. I couldn’t just open the bag and see it in the bottom,” she<br />

added. “I would have to pull that whole flap out the bottom of that suitcase to see it. It was<br />

impossible for me to see it, hear it or anything in that bag.”<br />

SCOTUS decision seizes power to decide Federal Regulations Hardfought<br />

Consumer victories now at risk<br />

<strong>The</strong> Supreme Court issued<br />

several consequential rulings in<br />

its recently concluded term. One<br />

such decision reversed a 40-year<br />

precedent commonly known as<br />

the Chevron doctrine, that gave<br />

federal agencies the authority<br />

to write rules that enforced and<br />

implemented laws passed by<br />

Congress.<br />

But on June 28, a sweeping<br />

majority opinion authored by<br />

Chief Justice John Roberts<br />

ignored judicial precedent<br />

to hold that only the courts<br />

would decide regulation. In<br />

the SCOTUS majority view,<br />

judges alone would now decide<br />

highly specialized rules crafted<br />

to maintain reliable consumer<br />

safety standards governing our<br />

food, public health, occupational<br />

safety, clean water, higher<br />

education and more, bypassing<br />

the high-level expertise of civil<br />

servants in affected agencies.<br />

Roberts’ opinion included:<br />

“Perhaps most fundamentally,<br />

Chevron’s presumption is<br />

misguided because agencies<br />

have no special competence in<br />

resolving statutory ambiguities.<br />

Courts do… Courts must<br />

exercise their independent<br />

judgment in deciding whether<br />

an agency has acted within its<br />

statutory authority.”<br />

Covid-19 is yet to settle into<br />

a seasonal cycle, making it<br />

almost impossible to predict<br />

when new strains will emerge.<br />

Scientists believe that<br />

population immunity is far<br />

higher with pre-existing<br />

seasonal viruses than with<br />

Every July for the past four<br />

years, epidemiologists at the US<br />

Centers for Disease Control and<br />

Prevention (CDC) have noted a<br />

sudden spike in Covid-19 cases<br />

and hospitalizations, an annual<br />

trend which has been dubbed<br />

“the summertime surge”.<br />

This summer in the United<br />

States, Covid-19 rates are<br />

reportedly particularly high<br />

in Arizona, California, Hawaii<br />

and Nevada. In these western<br />

states, the number of positive<br />

tests reached 15.6% on the<br />

week ending July 6th, 1% up on<br />

the previous week. <strong>The</strong> CDC’s<br />

investigations show that viral<br />

rates in wastewater are also on<br />

the rise once again.<br />

A similar trend has played<br />

out on the other side of the<br />

Atlantic, where according<br />

to the UK’s Health Security<br />

Agency, positive Covid-19<br />

tests rose from 4% at the end<br />

of March to 14% by the end of<br />

June.<br />

<strong>The</strong> recent rise has been<br />

attributed to the FLiRT<br />

subvariants, the latest<br />

evolution of the Omicron strain<br />

of Covid-19 which emerged<br />

towards the end of 2021. This<br />

new raft of subvariants is the<br />

inevitable consequence of the<br />

virus trying out new mutations<br />

in its spike protein – a structure<br />

which is essential for Covid-19’s<br />

ability to enter human cells,<br />

but can also alert the human<br />

immune system to the virus’<br />

presence in the body. As a<br />

result, Covid-19 has found more<br />

effective ways of evading the<br />

neutralizing antibodies within<br />

most of our immune systems,<br />

while still being capable of<br />

locking onto the ACE2 receptor,<br />

a protein on human cells in the<br />

respiratory tract which allows<br />

it to enter the body. (Find out<br />

According to Shan-Lu<br />

Liu, who directs the Viruses<br />

and Emerging Pathogens<br />

Program at <strong>The</strong> Ohio State<br />

University and has studied the<br />

FLiRT subvariants, these<br />

latest Covid-19 viruses have<br />

managed to strike a balance<br />

between escaping the immune<br />

system and still being able to<br />

bind to cells, which is driving<br />

many of the new cases.<br />

“<strong>The</strong> elderly and<br />

immunosuppressed are<br />

particularly vulnerable to<br />

new subvariants due to their<br />

weakened immune responses<br />

to vaccination and natural<br />

infection,” says Liu. He explains<br />

that experts recommend that<br />

these groups receive booster<br />

shots including the XBB.1.5<br />

monovalent vaccine. This<br />

was designed to target the<br />

Omicron XBB 1.5 subvariant<br />

of Covid-19, which emerged in<br />

2022.<br />

Jewish Republicans are smearing Kamala Harris from Front Page<br />

Piling on, David Friedman, who served<br />

as ambassador to Israel in the Trump<br />

administration, wrote on X, “<strong>The</strong>re is now the<br />

widest gap in American history between the two<br />

candidates’ support for Israel. Donald Trump<br />

is the best ever — Kamala Harris would be the<br />

worst.”<br />

<strong>The</strong>ir campaign against Harris and her<br />

husband, Doug Emhoff, potentially the next<br />

president and first gentleman, will only grow<br />

more desperate and far-fetched as the election<br />

nears. Your job: Be very, very skeptical. <strong>The</strong><br />

shock troops of misinformation deserve high<br />

marks for speed, but not so much for accuracy.<br />

Watch the exchange that the RJC highlighted<br />

for yourself, and it’s clear that Harris certainly<br />

didn’t stay silent when a student at Northern<br />

Arizona University accused Israel of genocide and<br />

justified Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack. In fact, you might<br />

end up feeling grateful for Harris — as I did —<br />

because of the ease with which she demonstrated<br />

how to deescalate a tense interaction over the<br />

Middle East.<br />

You might, in fact, think the qualities she<br />

displayed in the interaction would make her<br />

quite a good president.<br />

“I believe Israelis and Palestinians both<br />

deserve peace, deserve self-determination and<br />

deserve safety,” Harris said — a stance that<br />

happens to have been mainstream, far-fromradical<br />

American foreign policy for the past 75<br />

years.<br />

She then blamed the “terrorist organization<br />

Hamas” for the atrocities of Oct. 7 and for<br />

instigating the ongoing war. “We must<br />

differentiate between a terrorist organization,<br />

Hamas, and the Palestinian people, and civilians,”<br />

she said, “and they should not be conflated.”<br />

Harris added that we all are distressed at the<br />

images of human suffering and we must “take it<br />

seriously.” <strong>The</strong> crowd broke out into applause and<br />

cheers. Harris had acknowledged the truth of the<br />

situation; spoken to a broad variety of concerns;<br />

and evaded a dangerous rhetorical trap.<br />

I have to thank the RJC and Friedman,<br />

because until their tweets pushed me to rewatch<br />

the video, I had not quite appreciated Harris’s<br />

skillful way of navigating past bias and semiinformed<br />

rage.<br />

why I can’t wait to vote for Kamala Harris<br />

When she ended by telling the young Latino<br />

man who asked the question, “I appreciate your<br />

question and I appreciate your leadership,” she<br />

wasn’t, as Friedman suggests, kowtowing to<br />

a Hamas supporter. She was, by showing him<br />

respect, quietly making a move to prompt him<br />

toward greater receptiveness to her centrist, pro-<br />

Israel message.<br />

It was not a display of political cowardice. It<br />

was a masterclass in how to open and change<br />

minds.<br />

bring us closer to the nation’s<br />

promises of freedom and justice<br />

for all. In two particular areas<br />

– fair housing and financial<br />

regulation – many hard-won<br />

victories aimed at addressing<br />

inequalities could be opened up<br />

to review and reversal.<br />

In a scorching dissent,<br />

Associate Justice Elena<br />

Kagen, joined by Justices<br />

Sonya Sotomayor and Ketanji<br />

Brown-Jackson, outlined the<br />

consequences of the majority<br />

ruling.<br />

“In one fell swoop, the<br />

majority today gives itself<br />

exclusive power over every open<br />

issue—no matter how expertisedriven<br />

or policy-laden—involving the meaning of regulatory law,” wrote Kagen. “As if it<br />

did not have enough on its plate, the majority turns itself into the country’s administrative<br />

czar…Today’s decision is not one Congress directed. It is entirely the majority’s choice.”<br />

For example, the 1968 Fair Housing Act was strengthened by a HUD rule known as<br />

Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH). Originally a 2015 initiative of the Obama<br />

administration, an updated version was proposed in 2023 by the Biden administration that<br />

according to HUD would “achieve integrated living patterns, overcome historic and existing<br />

patterns of segregation, reduce racial and ethnic concentrations of poverty, increase access to<br />

homeownership, and ensure realistic and truly equal access to opportunity and community<br />

assets.”<br />

Central to the rule was the development of written local ‘Equity Plans’ that incorporated<br />

citizens’ concerns into a meaningful plan of action.<br />

Similarly, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), created by 2010’s Dodd-Frank<br />

Wall Street Reform & Consumer Protection Act, implemented in 2017 a payday lending rule<br />

that required requiring lenders to determine whether consumers had the ability to repay before<br />

approving predatory loans like payday, vehicle title and certain other high-cost installment<br />

ones.<br />

But two years later, a change in administration and agency director led to a court-ordered<br />

stay in rule implementation. In response, a coalition of advocates that included the Center for<br />

Responsible Lending wrote then-CFPB Director Kathleen Kraninger with warnings of how the<br />

agency was abandoning its consumer protection mission.<br />

“[S]ince its 2017 leadership change, the CFPB has repeatedly failed to support the August<br />

19, 2019, compliance date the agency established for these important provisions,” the coalition<br />

wrote in part. “<strong>The</strong> Rule’s payments provisions will protect consumers from significant harm by<br />

restricting an unfair and abusive practice: payday and vehicle-title lenders’ repeat attempts to<br />

debit borrowers’ bank accounts, after two consecutive withdrawal attempts fail due to insufficient<br />

funds… <strong>The</strong>se safeguards are important under any circumstance, but even more so because the<br />

agency has delayed and is proposing to undo the ability-to-repay protections.”<br />

With yet another change of administration, in 2020 and under current President Joe Biden,<br />

CFPB updated the rule, to include emerging predatory loans like longer-term loans with balloon<br />

payments, and other consumer loans that charged 36 percent annual percentage rates (APR) or<br />

higher.<br />

Strong and swift reactions to the Chevron reversal came from academicians and advocates.<br />

“When I went to law school, the most conservative legal scholars railed against just such<br />

creep of judicial policymaking,” said Deborah A. Sivas, a chaired professor at Stanford Law<br />

School in a recent Q&A blog. “Now they basically embrace it.”<br />

“Beyond the SAVE repayment plan and student loan forgiveness, this ruling could also have<br />

an impact on other regulations from the Education Department including gainful employment,”<br />

according to a statement by the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators<br />

Resurgence of<br />

Political Violence<br />

in America<br />

NNPA NEWSWIRE — Violence is nothing new<br />

in association with politics in America. What<br />

has become different, however, is how it is<br />

reported in the so-called mainstream media<br />

and in the various channels of social media.<br />

For nearly 200 years the Black Press has had to call<br />

out and confront the evils of violent racism, hatred,<br />

oppression, imperialism, slavery, and fascism. Violence<br />

begets violence. Extremism begets extremism. Political<br />

violence begets political violence. In a democracy,<br />

political violence cannot and should not be condoned,<br />

As we approach the 200th Anniversary of the Black Press<br />

of America in 2027, the National Newspapers Publishers<br />

Association (NNPA) is obliged to speak and plead for our<br />

own cause considering the resurgence of political violence in<br />

America. <strong>The</strong> attempted assassination of former President<br />

Trump in Pennsylvania was the latest violent contradiction<br />

that, unfortunately, remains deeply embedded in American<br />

life, culture, and politics.<br />

America is rapidly approaching another violent and<br />

counterproductive abyss of division, hatred, and antidemocratic<br />

repression.<br />

For nearly 200 years the Black Press has had to call out<br />

and confront the evils of violent racism, hatred, oppression,<br />

imperialism, slavery, and fascism. Violence begets violence.<br />

Extremism begets extremism. Political violence begets political<br />

violence. In a democracy, political violence cannot and should<br />

not be condoned, tolerated, or normalized. As President Biden<br />

stated, “Hate must have no safe harbor in America.”<br />

Racial hatred and violence as well as political hatred and<br />

violence are abhorrent to freedom, justice, and equality for all.<br />

We don’t need another bloodstain on the character of America,<br />

and we don’t want to see this country implode from within due<br />

to politics of violence. Even though we are concerned about the<br />

political climate of this country, we are keenly aware that the<br />

current escalation of hate and outward racism comes at a time<br />

when political differences are hotly contested.<br />

Unfortunately, the association of violence and politics is<br />

nothing new in America. However, what has changed is how<br />

political violence is reported by the so-called mainstream media<br />

and amplified across social media channels.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Black Press has not only emerged as the trusted voice<br />

of Black America, but as an authentic voice for all Americans<br />

who demand equality over inequality, justice over injustice,<br />

freedom over bondage, and nonviolence over violence.<br />

American journalism needs to be rescued from the fake,<br />

false, frailties of extremist propaganda and subjective refusal to<br />

courageously publish and distribute facts and truth. Millions of<br />

people throughout the nation continue to be polarized because<br />

of disinformation and misinformation.<br />

Again, we reaffirm the value, purpose, and impact of the<br />

Black Press. We intend this year to mobilize our NNPA member<br />

publishers and constituencies across the nation to ensure the<br />

Party Convention, Trump was totally in<br />

control of the money, power, and policies of<br />

every detail in the convention. Trump is the<br />

dictator of the party, and every one must<br />

march in line.<br />

Trump is a convicted felon, and what other<br />

laws he has broken, you must still march in<br />

line. Criminals are consisted a badge of honor, and if he wins<br />

the election June 6 criminals and insurrections will be let<br />

out of jail. Donald Trump does not respect federal’s laws, and<br />

Americans are following a crook and con man down a road of<br />

violence.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is nothing that you can believe that comes out of<br />

his mouth, and lies are what he builds his campaign on.”Over<br />

the past four days, we’ve seen speaker endorse a far-right,<br />

dangerous vision that would see Americans’ basic liberties<br />

stripped away andreplace the rule of law with the rule of<br />

Trump,” says DNC Chair Jaime Harrison.<br />

Trump wants to go back, where White men were in control<br />

and made the decisions for other cultures and races. Women<br />

were considered second class-citizens, and they could not make<br />

decisions about their own bodies.<br />

As the Republicans go down this dangerous path, Trump is<br />

only concerned about himself and the money he gets paid. In<br />

this new Republican Party, there is only space for unquestioning<br />

loyalist who will put Trump above our democracy and the law.<br />

At the age of seventy-eight, considered<br />

old, President Biden entered the 2020<br />

presidential race primarily to save<br />

America’s democracy from again falling<br />

into the hands of former President<br />

Trump, a corrupt demagogue. He<br />

defeated Trump and became America’s<br />

46th President. During his four years,<br />

he rescued the economy, halted the<br />

spread of COVID-19, and stimulated<br />

unprecedented job creation. Yet, there<br />

remains more work to solve political and<br />

social issues dividing the country.<br />

President Biden, now eighty-one, accepted the challenge and<br />

became the Democrats’ 2024 presidential candidate. Despite a<br />

poor debate and waning health, which caused doubt amongst<br />

fellow Democrats and donors, he wanted to remain in the race.<br />

However, his love for America, Democracy, and, even more<br />

so, its people led him to make a selfless sacrifice, a testament<br />

to his unwavering commitment to Democracy. This sacrifice,<br />

driven by his heartfelt devotion to saving the soul of this great<br />

Nation, is a powerful demonstration of his dedication and love<br />

for the country.<br />

On Sunday, July 21, 2024, President Biden wrote a terse<br />

letter to the American people stating that he was dropping<br />

out of the 2024 presidential race and endorsing VP Harris as<br />

his replacement. When Biden selected Harris as his VP, he<br />

undoubtedly saw a hidden strength that could be relied upon<br />

to defend and save America’s Democracy if needed.<br />

Florida prisons look to<br />

on inmates as an unnecessary form of surveillance<br />

A Florida Department of Corrections requirement that<br />

inmates wear electronic bracelets to monitor their movements<br />

in one facility is raising concerns among some family members<br />

and advocates that refusal to wear the devices is resulting in<br />

punishment.<br />

Denise Rock, with inmate advocacy group Florida Cares,<br />

said that “rampant conversations” are happening about the<br />

program among loved ones of inmates on social media because<br />

of the lack of information given out by the department.<br />

One of the concerns expressed during the conversations is<br />

that the bracelets are being used to monitor inmates’ heartbeats<br />

to detect illegal drug use.<br />

“We asked the department if that was going to be done and<br />

we were told that it is not, that it’s simply to assist with the<br />

count procedure,” Rock said. “Unfortunately, the department’s<br />

doing what it’s very often done, which is not providing people<br />

with information, so they get scared.”<br />

Last year, the department began using artificial intelligence<br />

to surveil inmates’ outgoing phone calls using key words,<br />

although the system screens out calls with doctors, lawyers<br />

and spiritual advisers, the Tampa Bay Times reported.<br />

declined to take up a fight<br />

stemming from a “financial<br />

impact statement” that will<br />

appear on the November<br />

ballot with a proposed<br />

constitutional amendment on abortion rights, saying the case<br />

is moot because the statement was revised last week.<br />

A three-judge panel of the 1st District Court of Appeal,<br />

however, raised the possibility that Floridians Protecting<br />

Freedom, a political committee sponsoring the proposed<br />

constitutional amendment, could launch a new legal challenge<br />

to the revised statement — and that the state could reiterate<br />

its arguments that a circuit judge doesn’t have authority to<br />

decide such cases.<br />

“To the extent that appellees (Floridians Protecting Freedom)<br />

may wish to raise new claims about the revised financial<br />

impact statement, they may do so in a separate proceeding,”<br />

said Monday’s ruling shared by Judges Stephanie Ray, Ross<br />

Bilbrey and Susan Kelsey. “Appellants (state officials) can<br />

again raise their arguments concerning the circuit court’s lack<br />

of jurisdiction in a case where there is an actual controversy<br />

presented.”<br />

In briefs filed last week, lawyers for Floridians Protecting<br />

Freedom and the state argued the appeal was not moot.<br />

hustle jobs 52 percent of workers<br />

took on second jobs in past 3<br />

years, says survey<br />

means, taking a second job<br />

has been a go-to option for<br />

seasonal and/or short-term<br />

additional earnings. Whether<br />

planning for special holidays,<br />

noteworthy family events,<br />

or a one-time purchase, a<br />

“side hustle” has enabled<br />

many families to have a few extra comforts to make life more<br />

enjoyable.<br />

But a new consumer survey finds that in recent years,<br />

an increasing number of workers are taking on second jobs<br />

for household needs, instead of wants. As the costs of living<br />

continue to creep upward, many working Americans are finding<br />

that one full-time job is simply not enough.<br />

More than half of workers - 52 percent – have taken on<br />

second jobs in the past three years, and nearly one in three<br />

survey respondents believe they will always need a second<br />

income just to make ends meet, according to Bankrate.com.<br />

“While it’s admirable that so many Americans are putting<br />

in extra time and effort on their side hustles, it’s unfortunate<br />

that most are doing so simply to fund their expenses,” noted<br />

Ted Rossman, Bankrate senior credit card analyst.<br />

<strong>The</strong> workers who most frequently turned to side hustles<br />

were: Generation Z ages 18 to 27 (48 percent); parents with<br />

children younger than 18 (45 percent); and Millennials, ages<br />

Dr. Enid Curtis Pinkney, a remarkable figure in Miami’s<br />

history, has died. Her passing was announced in a Facebook<br />

post this morning by the Brownsville Civic Neighborhood<br />

Association, Inc.<br />

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of historian,<br />

community icon and BCNA Past President: Dr. Enid C.<br />

Pinkney. Her legacy of work for our community has chartered<br />

a course in historic preservation for generations to come …<br />

Thank you, Dr. Pinkney, for all of your pioneering work in the<br />

community; for pushing the next generation to stand up and<br />

fight to preserve our history and for paving the way for African<br />

Americans to hold leadership roles in preservation, here in<br />

Miami. You will be sorely missed. May you rest peacefully in<br />

the Master’s arms.”<br />

Born in Miami of Bahamian heritage, Pinkney graduated<br />

from Booker T. Washington High School in 1949. She held a<br />

B.A. degree from Talladega College and a M.S. degree from<br />

Barry University and received honorary doctorate degrees<br />

in Humane Letters from both St. Thomas University and<br />

Talladega College. Pinkney worked as a social worker from<br />

1953 to 1955, after which she worked in the Dade County<br />

Public School System until she retired as assistant principal at<br />

South Miami Middle School in 1991.<br />

Her contributions to the community throughout her lifetime<br />

were extensive.<br />

Dr. Pinkney conducted research on African American<br />

burials that took place from 1896 to 1990 in the City Cemetery.<br />

<strong>The</strong>n in 2012, she led a re-interment service at the Lemon<br />

City Cemetery, where human bones unearthed in 2009 were<br />

re-buried. She also wrote articles and columns about Miami’s<br />

history, including “Fifth Court Revisited” and “Overtown was<br />

My Town.” Additionally, she produced documentaries on topics<br />

such as the Historic Hampton House and historical perspectives<br />

of Brownsville.<br />

As the first Black president of Dade Heritage Trust and<br />

Natives of Dade, Dr. Pinkney played a pivotal role in saving<br />

the Miami Circle from demolition. She also saved the Historic<br />

Hampton House from demolition and led its restoration efforts.<br />

<strong>The</strong> segregation era Green Book motel now serves as a cultural<br />

center and museum in Brownsville.<br />

Last April, at age 91, she spoke against Hialeah’s plan to<br />

annex part of Brownsville at a news conference held by the<br />

Brownsville Civic Neighborhood Association (BCNA).<br />

“Please do not let anybody take your heritage,” she said.<br />

community. We have a rich history. We need<br />

to learn it, so we can defend it.”<br />

Just look to Overtown, she warned, which<br />

has been trying to restore its legacy since<br />

Black residents were pushed out and divided<br />

by new highway constructions in the 1960s.<br />

“You have to be very careful when the<br />

government comes through with a proposal,<br />

because that’s how we lost out on Overtown,”<br />

Pinkney said. “<strong>The</strong>y came through with this<br />

urban renewal, which was nothing but Black<br />

removal.”<br />

Dr. Pinkney served on the Board of<br />

Directors of the Florida Conference of the<br />

United Church of Christ and was a founding<br />

member of <strong>The</strong> Church of <strong>The</strong> Open Door. She<br />

used media platforms to inform the public<br />

about critical issues, such as preventing the<br />

construction of an ecotourist resort on the<br />

historically significant “Colored” Beach at<br />

Virginia. <strong>The</strong>n in 2022 she came to a city of<br />

Miami budget meeting to express her outrage<br />

at the commission’s firing of the all-Black<br />

Virginia Key Beach Park Trust board and its<br />

public takeover by commissioners. She also<br />

vehemently opposed the city’s plan to move<br />

homeless people to the key, a plan that was<br />

eventually abandoned.<br />

NEW YORK, NY --It is with profound sadness that<br />

civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton announces the<br />

passing of his longtime attorney, confidante and brother<br />

in the movement, Attorney Michael Hardy. From the<br />

infancy of National Action’s Network inception in 1991<br />

to the present day, he had an enormous impact on the<br />

evolution of the organization. For over thirty years,<br />

Attorney Hardy stood beside Rev. Sharpton as a brilliant<br />

legal counselor and steadfast friend who was a legal<br />

architect behind some of the most important civil rights<br />

cases of our time. Even while seriously ill, he walked<br />

with NAN until his very last step. While memorial<br />

service arrangements have not been formalized, many<br />

in the movement pause today to acknowledge Michael’s<br />

memory and to thank a higher power that he was such a great human being. We are praying for his widow, Dr.<br />

Robin, and his family.<br />

Civil Rights Gladiator Dies, Final Rights for Reverend Fred Taylor<br />

not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him<br />

That biblical verse preached by Trinity Baptist Church<br />

of Atlanta founder-pastor T. Dewitt Smith, Jr. fit<br />

homegoing Civil Rights gibraltar Reverend Frederick<br />

(Fred) Douglas Taylor to a tee.<br />

“Fred was a humble man,” said Smith who eulogized<br />

to congregants who came out July 12th at historic<br />

West Hunter Street Baptist Church in Atlanta’s West<br />

End community. “Not unlike many of us, he would fall<br />

but he always picked himself up and got back in the<br />

race.”<br />

A plethora of others who marched, sang, prayed<br />

and supported Taylor through his near 40-year career<br />

as a virtual unsung hero in ministry, Civil Rights<br />

and specifically the Southern Christian Leadership<br />

Conference (SCLC) echoed Pastor Smith’s remarks<br />

during the near two-hour ceremony.<br />

Tyrone Brooks, a former member of the Georgia<br />

general assembly, veteran foot soldier and SCLC’s<br />

longtime national communications director, recited<br />

a litany of Taylor’s trek through his own attempts<br />

toward righting the wrongs of injustice, bigotry, bigots<br />

and violence, including their first eyeball-to-eyeball<br />

meeting.<br />

“In 1969, I was at the front desk of SCLC headquarters<br />

sitting in and answering the phones when Taylor<br />

walked in looking for Reverend T.Y. Rogers who was<br />

director of chapters and affiliates,” said Brooks, as he<br />

stood in West Hunter’s center aisle clad in the Civil Reverend Fred Taylor and Daughter<br />

Rights attire of bib overalls and red shirt [he got that from Hosea Williams]. When Rogers died in an auto<br />

accident in 1971, Taylor became the new director. “I told Vanya [Fred’s daughter] that, from that point, Fred and<br />

I hit the road.” Brooks began schooling the neophyte Taylor on the good, bad and ugly of Civil Rights activity.<br />

“This is what we do. We march, go to jail, picket, get beat up, tear-gassed; the dogs might bite us, and we might<br />

get shot or assassinated. Fred got excited.”<br />

“He [Fred] didn’t let us stand on the sidelines,” said newly re-elected Georgia State Senator Donzella James.<br />

“Through his leadership, he embodied all of us. When we would fight against poverty, injustice or hunger in the<br />

General Assembly, Fred would show up at the state capitol with other leaders and give us inspiration.” “Fred<br />

Taylor was legendary,” said longtime State lawmaker Nan Orrock. “We are grateful to Reverend Taylor for his<br />

service. We must now emulate that service.”<br />

“Fred and I were both born in Prattville, Alabama,” said longtime State Senator Ed Harbison of Columbus<br />

Georgia. “We both moved from Prattville to Montgomery, Alabama. We both participated in the Montgomery<br />

bus boycott [1955], though we were tiny then. We marched right along though because we had that fire then. You<br />

should have seen Fred in high school. He was fired right up.”<br />

“For 21 years, Fred preached behind the pulpit of Trinity Church,” said Smith. He was named associate pastor<br />

and there was never a more loyal person that a pastor or preachers could have. Fred Taylor’s steps were ordered<br />

by the Lord. Can’t you hear him with that bullhorn marching in and out of the line yelling, ‘What do we want?:<br />

FREEDOM!’ ‘When do we want it!: NOW!’ I want you to know, Vanya, that your father was a walking sermon!”<br />

slave to be granted freedom<br />

through trial by jury…” She<br />

was born about 1719 as the<br />

child of a free white Woman<br />

her life as a free woman until<br />

And So It Begins: A Call for Vigilance Amidst Threats to FAMU’s Future<br />

As many of you know, Dr.<br />

Larry Robinson has recently<br />

announced his decision to<br />

step down as President of<br />

Florida A&M University<br />

(FAMU). This development<br />

comes at a time of significant<br />

uncertainty and concern<br />

for our beloved institution.<br />

While Dr. Robinson has faced<br />

criticism and made some<br />

mistakes, including the recent<br />

high-profile embarrassment<br />

with the Gerami Donation,<br />

which was used as a pretext<br />

for him to step down under<br />

pressure. It is undeniable<br />

that he has kept FAMU on an<br />

upward trajectory, achieving<br />

remarkable successes.<br />

heights, earning a place in<br />

the top 100 national public<br />

universities, outperforming<br />

notable institutions in<br />

Florida according to the<br />

2024 U.S. News & World<br />

Report. Specifically, FAMU<br />

(#91) ranks higher than<br />

Florida Atlantic University<br />

(FAU #112) and is closely<br />

positioned behind the<br />

University of Central Florida<br />

(UCF #64) and Florida<br />

International University<br />

(FIU #64). Dr. Robinson will<br />

go down in FAMU history as<br />

one of its most consequential<br />

presidents. We must hope<br />

that in this climate, we retain<br />

enough control of the search<br />

process to identify and select<br />

a president with the academic<br />

prowess, political acumen,<br />

fundraising stature, and<br />

judgment to steer this great<br />

university through a period<br />

of “High Stakes” of the most<br />

complex order.<br />

Adding to this<br />

uncertainty, the Florida<br />

Board of Governors (FBOG)<br />

has threatened to eliminate<br />

several key programs at<br />

FAMU, including the law,<br />

nursing, and pharmacy<br />

schools. During a recent<br />

committee meeting, Vice<br />

Chair Alan Levine expressed<br />

his discontent by stating, “I’m<br />

prepared to vote to take these<br />

programs away if we can’t do<br />

Medicaid Contracts Spark Lawsuit<br />

TALLAHASSEE — A<br />

losing bidder has filed a<br />

lawsuit seeking to prevent<br />

Florida health officials from<br />

moving forward with new<br />

Medicaid managed-care<br />

contracts while legal protests<br />

continue.<br />

ImagineCare LLC filed<br />

the lawsuit last week in Leon<br />

County circuit court after it<br />

was told it was “out of the<br />

running” for a contract, the<br />

lawsuit said. <strong>The</strong> multi-year<br />

contracts involve tens of<br />

billions of dollars, as about<br />

3.14 million people received<br />

care through the Medicaid<br />

managed-care system as of<br />

May.<br />

After a year-long process,<br />

the state Agency for Health<br />

Care Administration in April<br />

announced plans to award<br />

contracts to five managed-<br />

care organizations. That<br />

prompted bid protests from<br />

ImagineCare and other health<br />

plans and led to settlement<br />

discussions.<br />

<strong>The</strong> lawsuit said<br />

ImagineCare, after being<br />

shut out, intends to continue<br />

pursuing a protest through the<br />

administrative-law system. In<br />

the lawsuit, the health plan<br />

seeks an injunction to prevent<br />

the agency from moving<br />

forward with contracts while<br />

such protests play out.<br />

“Allowing AHCA and<br />

Secretary Weida (agency<br />

Secretary Jason Weida) to<br />

proceed with executing and<br />

implementing contracts<br />

while these protests remain<br />

pending will greatly prejudice<br />

ImagineCare and other<br />

protesting parties, cause<br />

irreparable harm to the<br />

Medicaid enrollees of the<br />

state of Florida and will<br />

violate both Florida law and<br />

the express provisions” of part<br />

of the bidding process known<br />

as invitation to negotiate, the<br />

lawsuit said.<br />

<strong>The</strong> lawsuit, filed by<br />

attorneys with the Panza,<br />

Maurer & Maynard law<br />

firm, said AHCA has sought<br />

to dismiss the ImagineCare<br />

protest based on an issue<br />

related to a bond requirement.<br />

ImagineCare disputes the<br />

agency’s position on the issue.<br />

Lawmakers in 2011<br />

created a system in which<br />

most Medicaid beneficiaries<br />

are required to enroll in<br />

managed-care plans. <strong>The</strong><br />

agency has gone through<br />

lengthy contracting processes<br />

three times, including the<br />

process that started in 2023.<br />

In the past, it awarded<br />

contracts in 11 regions of the<br />

state; that was scaled back<br />

to nine regions in the latest<br />

it the right way” (Tallahassee<br />

Democrat, June 28, 2024).<br />

<strong>The</strong>se words are alarming<br />

and remind us of a troubling<br />

past when FAMU’s law school<br />

was defunded and repurposed<br />

to Florida State University<br />

(FSU). Now, discussions<br />

suggest a similar fate could<br />

befall the law school again,<br />

this time repurposed to the<br />

University of Central Florida<br />

(UCF).<br />

<strong>The</strong>se issues resonate<br />

deeply with me, not just as a<br />

major donor and fundraiser to<br />

the university, but as the son<br />

of Dr. Frederick S. Humphries,<br />

who played a pivotal role in<br />

restoring FAMU’s law school<br />

and its prominence during his<br />

process.<br />

<strong>The</strong> agency announced<br />

in April that it planned to<br />

award contracts to Florida<br />

Community Care, LLC;<br />

presidency, commonly known<br />

as the “<strong>The</strong> Humphries Era”.<br />

<strong>The</strong> potential elimination<br />

of these programs would<br />

be a devastating blow,<br />

undermining all of the<br />

progress and legacy built over<br />

the years. To be clear, in this<br />

environment, these are not<br />

idle threats but must be seen<br />

as a direct threat and nothing<br />

short of a promise.<br />

One need look no further<br />

than the politicization of<br />

New College of Florida and<br />

the recent appointments of<br />

right-wing political figures<br />

at the University of Florida,<br />

former US Senator, Ben<br />

Sasse and New College<br />

of Florida. When Florida<br />

Humana Medical Plan, Inc.;<br />

Simply Healthcare Plans, Inc.;<br />

South Florida Community<br />

Care Network, LLC, which<br />

does business as Community<br />

Governor Ron DeSantis<br />

appointed six new members<br />

to the board of New College<br />

of Florida, he signaled a clear<br />

intent to shift the college’s<br />

direction. One appointee,<br />

conservative activist<br />

Christopher Rufo, made it<br />

explicit: “We are recapturing<br />

higher education,” he wrote<br />

on Twitter (now known as<br />

X). His agenda includes<br />

eliminating diversity, equity,<br />

and inclusion programs and<br />

hiring new faculty aligned<br />

with conservative values.<br />

Move to Reclassify Cannabis<br />

Raises Public Safety Concerns<br />

<strong>The</strong> federal government’s<br />

proposal to reclassify<br />

marijuana from Schedule 1<br />

to Schedule 3 has sparked<br />

debate over its impact on drug<br />

testing, especially in safetysensitive<br />

jobs. Schedule 1<br />

drugs lack accepted medical<br />

use and have a high potential<br />

for abuse. <strong>The</strong> process for<br />

a Controlled Substance Act<br />

rule change could take a<br />

year, and approval would not<br />

automatically end the federal<br />

ban on marijuana.<br />

Mark Magsam, a drug<br />

testing expert and founder of<br />

remedyNOW Consulting, has<br />

warned that reclassification<br />

could “challenge” established<br />

drug-free workplace policies.<br />

Magsam explained, “<strong>The</strong><br />

Department of Transportation<br />

(DOT) is only allowed to test<br />

for Schedule 1 and Schedule<br />

2 illegal drugs.” He believes<br />

that the reclassification is<br />

likely to significantly impact<br />

the industry, leading to<br />

changes in how policies are<br />

written and how testing may<br />

be conducted, if at all.<br />

Under Schedule 3,<br />

Magsam explains that<br />

marijuana might be treated<br />

more like a prescription drug.<br />

This change could potentially<br />

allow workers in federally<br />

regulated industries, such as<br />

mass transit, aviation, and<br />

commercial trucking, to use<br />

marijuana without employer<br />

testing legally.<br />

Magsam suggests enacting<br />

federal legislation or issuing<br />

executive orders to reaffirm<br />

along with being a Black man in this country,”<br />

Sellers said. “I am not sure people understand<br />

what it means to stand strong in this country.<br />

To have your back against the wall. But I am<br />

going to stand with her because she stood with<br />

me during my darkest moment when I almost<br />

lost my daughter. When I had to protect my<br />

wife.”<br />

<strong>The</strong> Zoom call resonated with the slogan,<br />

“We Rocking with Kamala Harris,” reflecting<br />

the participants’ unyielding support. This<br />

extraordinary event followed President Joe<br />

Biden’s announcement that he would not seek<br />

the Democratic nomination, prompting the<br />

Win with Black Women network to organize<br />

a Zoom call showcasing their preparedness to<br />

back Harris.<br />

<strong>The</strong> women’s call drew an astonishing<br />

40,000 attendees and featured influential<br />

speakers such as Reps. Joyce Beatty, Maxine<br />

Waters, and Jasmine Crockett. <strong>The</strong>se leaders<br />

passionately emphasized the vital role of<br />

Black women in the upcoming election and<br />

shared compelling stories about Harris that<br />

highlighted her qualifications and leadership<br />

qualities. Distinguished attendees included<br />

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, Maryland Senate<br />

hopeful Angela Alsobrooks, civil rights leader<br />

Bernice King, and Black Voters Matter cofounder<br />

LaTosha Brown. “We have a plan.<br />

This is not arbitrary. We are ready,” asserted<br />

Holli Holiday, one of the call’s moderators.<br />

<strong>The</strong> energy was electric, with attendees<br />

voicing their readiness to work tirelessly<br />

to elect Harris. “This is work. Roll up your<br />

sleeves; we got work to do,” one attendee urged.<br />

Another declared, “Fired up and ready for this<br />

moment led by an intergenerational legion of<br />

Black women. Let’s get to work. Let’s gather<br />

our sons, daughters, nieces, and nephews.<br />

Let’s do what Black women do!”<br />

In a less-publicized yet equally significant<br />

gathering, a large group of Black men and<br />

boys convened in Atlanta to discuss the state<br />

of America and the importance of Harris’s<br />

candidacy against Trump in the 2024 election.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se weekly discussions are critical for<br />

spreading accurate information and countering<br />

misinformation.<br />

“<strong>The</strong> reason that we’ve gathered tonight<br />

is that there is so much misinformation,<br />

disinformation, that is being put out. So,<br />

we wanted thought leaders from across the<br />

political spectrum to come in tonight and talk<br />

directly to Black men about what they know,<br />

what they experience, and what some of the<br />

real statistics and facts are,” said Attorney<br />

Mawuli Mel Davis, cofounder<br />

of the non-profit<br />

hosting these discussions.<br />

“That’s critically important<br />

because the sources of our<br />

information are important<br />

for us to make sure that<br />

we’re basing our decisions on<br />

good quality information.”<br />

Kamala Harris could make<br />

American Jewish history: If<br />

Harris is nominated and wins,<br />

her husband Doug Emhoff<br />

would be the first Jewish<br />

spouse in the White House.<br />

A Harris victory, of<br />

course, would make her<br />

the first woman president.<br />

It would make Emhoff the<br />

inaugural first gentleman.<br />

He’s embraced being second<br />

gentleman and has been a<br />

visible presence in Harris’s<br />

campaigns.<br />

Since he came into the role<br />

in 2021, Emhoff has especially<br />

leaned into his position’s<br />

Jewish aspects, from lighting<br />

a menorah in the official<br />

residence to focusing on<br />

antisemitism and Holocaust<br />

remembrance.<br />

“I didn’t realize what a<br />

big deal it would be not only<br />

to the Jewish community and<br />

to faith communities but to<br />

myself,” Emhoff said in 2022.<br />

“It’s actually driven me closer<br />

to faith. It has opened my<br />

eyes to a lot of things.”<br />

<strong>The</strong> spouse of the<br />

president takes an even<br />

more prominent place in the<br />

public eye and is expected to<br />

choose a set of issues to focus<br />

together. Donald Trump,<br />

who is running for another<br />

term, also has a Jewish<br />

immediate family member,<br />

his daughter Ivanka, who<br />

served as an adviser during<br />

his administration.<br />

As second gentleman,<br />

Emhoff has been at the front<br />

and center of the Biden<br />

administration’s efforts to<br />

fight antisemitism, including<br />

the unveiling of its national<br />

plan on the issue last year. In<br />

2022, he chaired a roundtable<br />

of Jewish organizations to<br />

discuss rising antisemitism,<br />

which has spiked further<br />

in the months since the<br />

outbreak of the Israel-Hamas<br />

war on October 7, according<br />

to watchdogs. In April, he cochaired<br />

a meeting of Jewish<br />

leaders to discuss Biden’s<br />

support for Israel in the war.<br />

In 2023, Emhoff took a fiveday<br />

working trip to Holocaust<br />

and Jewish heritage sites in<br />

Germany and Poland along<br />

with Deborah Lipstadt,<br />

the State Department’s<br />

antisemitism envoy. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

visited Auschwitz-Birkenau,<br />

met with Holocaust survivors<br />

and Jewish leaders, and toured<br />

Emhoff’s ancestral village<br />

in Poland, Gorlice. Emhoff<br />

called the conversation with<br />

survivors a “real emotional<br />

and intense way to finish the<br />

trip.”<br />

Last year, Emhoff’s guest<br />

at Biden’s State of the Union<br />

address was Ruth Cohen, a<br />

Holocaust survivor, then 92,<br />

from the Washington, DC,<br />

area. This year, he spoke at the<br />

groundbreaking ceremony for<br />

a new Tree of Life synagogue<br />

in Pittsburgh, the site of the<br />

worst antisemitic attack in<br />

American history.<br />

each year. Last year, they<br />

lit three: one designed by<br />

a Holocaust survivor, one<br />

salvaged from a community<br />

encouraged, but a new list<br />

reveals all schools aren’t<br />

created equally.<br />

<strong>The</strong> U.S. News & World<br />

Report released its ongoing<br />

list of the nation’s top colleges<br />

and universities which ranks<br />

the institutions based on a<br />

myriad of factors.<br />

“In total, 77 HBCUs that<br />

were eligible to be included<br />

on the list were ranked,” the<br />

outlet states. “Among the 77<br />

ranked HBCUs, schools that<br />

place in the top 90% display<br />

their individual ranks.”<br />

<strong>The</strong> schools were ranked<br />

according to their graduation<br />

Emhoff was raised in<br />

a Jewish family in New<br />

Jersey, where he attended<br />

Cedar Lake, a Jewish camp,<br />

and excelled in tennis and<br />

soccer. He has frequently<br />

described wearing a threepiece<br />

brown velour suit to his<br />

bar mitzvah. And as an earlycareer<br />

attorney in California,<br />

Emhoff was involved with<br />

Bet Tzedek, a Jewish legal<br />

Collins safely back to earth.<br />

We must also pay tribute<br />

to the brilliant work of<br />

mathematician, Katherine<br />

Johnson, the legendary<br />

African American woman at<br />

NASA, known as Woman of<br />

the 20th Century, who helped<br />

to calculate the trajectory for<br />

the successful Apollo 11 flight<br />

to the Moon, thereby helping<br />

to fulfill President John F.<br />

Kennedy’s mission to the<br />

Moon.<br />

In 1959 at NASA,<br />

Katherine Johnson’s vital role<br />

was expressed simply when<br />

she told them, “Let me do it…<br />

Tell me where you want the<br />

man to land, and I’ll tell you<br />

where to send him up.” In her<br />

Memoir, Katherine Johnson<br />

lays out exactly what her<br />

contribution to the Apollo 11<br />

mission entailed, stating, “My<br />

job was in general the same<br />

as it had been in previous<br />

missions: to compute the orbit<br />

to the desired destination and<br />

back and compute the launch<br />

window, telling the engineers<br />

what time the astronauts<br />

would get to their destination<br />

and what time they would<br />

get back to Earth. <strong>The</strong><br />

calculations for the moon orbit<br />

were quite intricate because<br />

there were so many factors<br />

involved.”(p.189) According to<br />

the book Hidden Figures that<br />

revealed for the first time the<br />

historic work of Katherine<br />

Johnson and the other<br />

human computer women<br />

at NASA during the Space<br />

Race, Katherine Johnson “…<br />

considers her work on the<br />

lunar rendezvous, prescribing<br />

the precise time at which the<br />

lunar lander needed to leave<br />

the Moon’s surface in order<br />

to coincide and dock with the<br />

orbiting command service<br />

module, to be her greatest<br />

contribution to the space<br />

program.” (p.248)<br />

Netflix's UNTOLD documentary series will return<br />

next month featuring an episode about the murder of<br />

former Alcorn State and NFL quarterback legend Steve<br />

McNair.<br />

<strong>The</strong> McNair doc is part of a three-week event that<br />

will begin Aug. 20 with the premiere of UNTOLD: <strong>The</strong><br />

Murder of Air McNair, which is directed by Rodney<br />

Lucas and Taylor Alexander Ward.<br />

<strong>The</strong> death of McNair in a 2009 murder-suicide, two<br />

years after his retirement from the NFL, shocked fans then<br />

and since and has left lingering questions.<br />

He was shot and killed by Sahel "Jenni" Kazemi,<br />

his 20-year-old mistress, on July 4 of that year. Kazemi<br />

shot McNair while he was asleep on her couch and then<br />

shot herself in the head. <strong>The</strong> deaths were quickly ruled<br />

a murder-suicide by authorities but suspicion still lingers<br />

that it was a double execution.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Tennessee Titans held a two-day memorial for<br />

McNair following his death and retired his No. 9 jersey.<br />

Athletic Conference (SWAC)<br />

who won the 1994 Walter<br />

Payton Award as the top<br />

His scintillating play in his<br />

senior campaign saw him finish<br />

an unprecedented third in the<br />

1994 Heisman Trophy race, the<br />

highest finish ever for a black<br />

college player. In his college career, he passed for SWAC<br />

and I-AA records of 14,496 yards and 119 touchdowns<br />

and set numerous I-AA single-game and career records for<br />

total offense.<br />

He was drafted third overall in the 1995 NFL Draft<br />

by Houston and played 11 years for the Oilers who later<br />

moved to Nashville, Tennessee and became the Titans.<br />

McNair played the final two years of his 13-year career<br />

with the Baltimore Ravens. He was a three-time Pro<br />

Bowler and 2003 co-MVP who led the Titans to Super<br />

Bowl XXXIV in the 1999 season.<br />

<strong>The</strong> series will also include documentaries about<br />

Michigan football's sign stealing scandal and Hope Solo's<br />

battle against U.S. Soccer.<br />

HBCU BASKETBALL SHOWCASE ON CBS:<br />

NEW YORK – CBS Sports will present two HBCU<br />

rivalry games in the CBS Sports Classic:<br />

HBCU Showcase, a men's college<br />

basketball doubleheader highlighting<br />

the HBCU experience.<br />

<strong>The</strong> action begins on Saturday,<br />

December 28 with North Carolina<br />

A&T hosting North Carolina Central (NCCU) at 2:00<br />

PM, ET and is followed by Howard visiting Hampton at<br />

4:00 PM, ET.<br />

<strong>The</strong> games, which will be hosted by the teams from<br />

the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA), will be played on<br />

campus – North Carolina A&T’s Corbett Sports Center<br />

NASHVILLE — <strong>The</strong> Tennessee State football team was picked<br />

fourth in the Big South-OVC Preseason Poll as the league released the<br />

ranking ahead of last Wednesday's Virtual Media Day.<br />

Led by fourth-year head coach Eddie George, the Tigers received<br />

41 points in the poll, a promising position for a team<br />

coming off its first winning season since 2017 (6-5,<br />

2-4).<br />

<strong>The</strong> Tigers had a total of 12 players at every<br />

position chosen to the league's Players to Watch list.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y include lineman Eriq George, linebacker Ahmad<br />

2025 will be hosted in Atlanta at the Gateway<br />

Center Arena.<br />

basketball tournaments in the city of Atlanta," said SWAC Commissioner<br />

Dr. Charles McClelland. "<strong>The</strong> Atlanta Fulton County Recreation<br />

Authority (AFCRA) has been a tremendous partner in working with us to<br />

make the relocation of our basketball tournaments a reality."<br />

Nunnie on the Sideline<br />

I have become increasingly more enamored<br />

with the WNBA, the amazing talent level<br />

and compelling personalities representing<br />

the league along with the national media<br />

scrutiny based on increased attendance.<br />

Much of today’s success can be attributed<br />

to trailblazers like Cheryl Swoopes, Maya<br />

Moore, Lisa Leslie, Tameka Catchings and<br />

Sue Bird. Juxtaposed that lineage with today’s<br />

present and rising stars like Breanna<br />

Stewart, Brittany Griner, A’ja Wilson, Angela<br />

Reese and Caitlin Clark, very much indicative of a viable,<br />

ascending sports enterprise. <strong>The</strong> league’s marketing department<br />

also deserves credit for its innovative approaches to<br />

the game’s growth and national appeal. <strong>The</strong> skills challenge<br />

pre actual all-star game was brilliantly marketed, then having<br />

the sagacity during an Olympic year to pit the USA select<br />

team against the WNBA all-stars was masterful. <strong>The</strong> competitive<br />

nature of the ladies made for a compelling game because<br />

neither wanted to lose to the other. Notre Dame alum Arike<br />

Ogunbowale’s 3-point shooting in second half catapulted the<br />

WNBA All-Stars to victory. Trust result is not an omen of Paris<br />

Olympics performances.<br />

<strong>The</strong> US men’s basketball team, on paper as talented as the<br />

1992 Dream Team led by Michael Jordan, has had some close<br />

calls in 6 exhibition games, particularly Australia, South Sudan<br />

and Germany. With Lebron James, Steph Curry, Anthony<br />

Edwards, Jason Tatum, and Anthony Davis leading the way,<br />

one would think that most games wouldn’t even be competitive.<br />

Nothing could be further from the truth, however. Of<br />

particular note: all those teams have NBA caliber players on<br />

their rosters, <strong>The</strong> fact, simply put, is that the world basketball<br />

wise has definitively closed the talent gap since the days of the<br />

Dream Team. To win Gold, the women’s and men’s teams will<br />

have to earn it as nothing would be more satisfying or rewarding<br />

to competing countries than to relegate the USA to a silver<br />

or bronze medal.<br />

<strong>The</strong> opening Olympic ceremonies begin on Friday, July 26,<br />

and the expectation is that the Paris Olympics may be historically<br />

the most anticipated and competitive. Let’s hope so.<br />

TALLAHASSEE, FL –– Florida A&M (FAMU) football is<br />

coming off one of their most historic seasons after finishing<br />

12-1 for the second time in program history, winning their<br />

16th HBCU National Championship and entering the season<br />

ranked 20th in Lindy’s Sports preseason ranking.<br />

“It’s a testament to what the team accomplished last year<br />

and the recruiting the football staff did for this season,” said<br />

Head Coach James Colzie III. “Our goals are to be higher than<br />

that, and we can only show that on the field. I’m excited about<br />

the ranking, but our goals and expectations are to be higher<br />

than that once the season ends.”<br />

<strong>The</strong> Rattlers open the season in 33 days versus Norfolk State<br />

in the official start of the HBCU football season, the MEAC/<br />

SWAC Challenge. <strong>The</strong> Rattlers will face the Spartans in week<br />

zero for the first time since the 2019 season.<br />

Florida A&M football enters the Southwestern Athletic Conference<br />

(SWAC) season with seven players selected for eight<br />

positions for preseason All-SWAC honors. <strong>The</strong> Rattlers were<br />

also selected to finish second in the East.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Rattlers have four players make the All-SWAC First<br />

Team, led by defensive back Kendall Bohler and kicker Cameron<br />

Gillis, as they finished 2023 on the first team. Defensive<br />

back Deco Wilson joined Bohler on the First Team, and offensive<br />

lineman Ashton Grable moved up to the first team after<br />

finishing 2023 on the second team.<br />

Joining the Preseason All-SWAC Second Team is Celebration<br />

Bowl Offensive MVP Kelvin Dean Jr. and wide receiver Jamari<br />

Gassett. On the defensive side of the ball, Allen Smith Jr. made<br />

the team. Gassett also made it as a return specialist.<br />

Allen University and Edward Waters University, along<br />

with two other colleges and universities, will become NCAA<br />

Division II members after completing provisional membership.<br />

<strong>The</strong> approval was made last week during its meeting in<br />

Indianapolis, thus bringing the number of Division II schools<br />

in 2024–25 to 293 in total.<br />

Edward Waters and Allen University have achieved notable<br />

success in the SIAC, especially in football. Edward Waters<br />

recently concluded a strong 6-4 season. <strong>The</strong>ir 5-3 record in<br />

the SIAC placed them in a tie for third place in the conference<br />

alongside Allen University.<br />

Former Allen coach Teddy Keaton departed the program<br />

following the 2023 season to assume the role of head coach for<br />

the Clark Atlanta University Panthers. As they aim to revamp,<br />

the Panthers are coming off a commendable season, concluding<br />

with a 7-3 record, including a 5-3 standing in the SIAC.<br />

Furthermore, both Thomas More University and the<br />

University of South Carolina Beaufort—which were leaving<br />

the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics—have<br />

progressed to the third year of the provisional membership<br />

procedure. Five universities—Jessup University (NAIA), Menlo<br />

College (NAIA), Roosevelt University (NAIA), Sul Ross State<br />

University (Division III), and Vanguard University (NAIA)—<br />

moved on to the second year of the temporary membership<br />

procedure.<br />

Four schools were also granted provisional membership by<br />

the committee. <strong>The</strong> University of Texas at Dallas will leave<br />

Division III, while Point Park University, the University of<br />

California, Merced, and the University of Jamestown will<br />

leave the NAIA. Jamestown, Texas-Dallas, and UC Merced<br />

were granted admission to the two-year expedited temporary<br />

membership process. In the first year of the three-year<br />

provisional membership procedure, Point Park will commence.<br />

<strong>The</strong> National Collegiate Athletic Association is a member-led<br />

organization dedicated to the well-being and lifelong success of<br />

college athletes. Every year, the NCAA awards approximately<br />

$3.5 billion in athletic scholarships.<br />

Over 500,000 collegiate athletes participate in all three<br />

levels, representing approximately 1,100 member institutions<br />

across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and<br />

even Canada. Back in 2021, the NCAA changed its policy to<br />

allow student athletes to engage in NIL activities.<br />

All membership decisions will be reviewed by the Division II<br />

Management Council during its meeting on July 22–23. Sept. 1<br />

is when the reforms will go into effect.<br />

women’s basketball<br />

standout passes away<br />

Jazmin Boyd was a key part of Grambling’s most recent NCAA<br />

women’s basketball tournament team to date in 2018.<br />

Saturday, the university announced that Boyd passed away.<br />

Sources tell HBCU Sports Boyd passed away in a car accident<br />

in nearby Ruston, Louisiana Friday.<br />

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our former women’s<br />

basketball student-athlete and GSU alumna, Jazmin Boyd,”<br />

Tigers athletic director Trayvean Scott said in a statement. “Our<br />

thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, teammates<br />

and all who were touched by her remarkable life.” We ask for<br />

everyone to keep the Boyd family in your prayers during this<br />

very difficult time.”<br />

Boyd played for the Tigers from 2015-2019, averaging 12<br />

points and 3 rebounds per game. Boyd was a part of the 2017-<br />

18 Grambling team that defeated No. 2 Texas Southern and<br />

and No. 1 Southern on back-to-back nights to win their first<br />

Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament title since 1999.<br />

She scored a team-high 19 points in the 66-59 SWAC semifinal<br />

win over Texas Southern and led the team in scoring with 20<br />

points in their NCAA tournament first round loss to Baylor.<br />

Michael Vick to appear at HBCU<br />

girls and women’s football clinic<br />

To kick off its football media festivities, the Mid-Eastern<br />

Athletic Conference will have a well-known former quarterback<br />

in attendance this weekend to help grow the game.<br />

Newport News native and former Atlanta Falcons and<br />

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick will lend his<br />

time and expertise to the MEAC’s second annual “Girls on the<br />

Gridiron” Flag Football Clinic on Saturday at Norfolk State<br />

University. <strong>The</strong> clinic runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dick Price<br />

Stadium, and as of Wednesday, registration is still open to the<br />

public and free.<br />

“With the growth of women’s flag football nationally, the<br />

MEAC is proud to champion the sport and its upward trajectory,”<br />

MEAC commissioner Sonja Stills said in a statement. “Flag<br />

Football has gained recognition from the most elite bodies in<br />

sport, and it will be introduced on the Olympic stage in 2028.<br />

As such, it is important for the MEAC to drive diversity and<br />

gender equity efforts forward to include all of our fans from<br />

each of our Elite Eight member institutions. This clinic allows<br />

us to bridge DE&I initiatives while also engaging in activities<br />

within the community.”<br />

the NAACP’s national convention,<br />

American Federation of<br />

Lee Saunders delivered<br />

a speech on the importance<br />

of civic activism, especially in<br />

this critical election year.<br />

During the event, William<br />

“Bill” Lucy — a key organizer<br />

of the 1968 Memphis Sanitation<br />

strike and former secretary-treasurer<br />

of AFSCME<br />

— was awarded the prestigious<br />

NAACP Inaugural Legacy<br />

Award, which he accepted<br />

via video. In his speech that<br />

followed, AFSCME President<br />

Saunders outlined the historic<br />

organizing work Lucy did to<br />

build lasting bridges between<br />

civil rights and labor rights:<br />

“At the age of 34, [Bill Lucy]<br />

walked off the job to protest<br />

poverty wages and degrading<br />

This was about dignity and<br />

respect. It wasn’t just about<br />

recognition of their union,<br />

but recognition of their basic<br />

humanity. That was reflected<br />

in their iconic slogan that Bill<br />

Saunders also honored the<br />

memory of the late Rev. James<br />

Lawson, who passed away in<br />

June and was instrumental<br />

in persuading Dr. Martin Luther<br />

King Jr. to join the striking<br />

dream to sit back and<br />

watch us fight each other<br />

and create chaos,” said<br />

state Sen. Shevrin Jones, a<br />

Miami Gardens Democrat<br />

who chairs the Miami-Dade<br />

County Democratic Party.<br />

“But we don’t have to show<br />

them chaos. We can show<br />

them unity, and we can show<br />

them strength.”<br />
