GILMANTON, NH<br />
Incorporated in 1727, Gilmanton is a classic New England town<br />
comprised of three villages: Gilmanton Corners, Gilmanton Iron<br />
Works, and Lower Gilmanton. Gilmanton Corners is a true “Currier<br />
and Ives” setting with its large, white historical homes gracing<br />
the gradual approach into the village. The huge old Church, the<br />
Gilmanton Academy (where Ralph Waldo Emerson attended school),<br />
the 1793 Tavern (with 18th-century wall stencils) and the village<br />

Holderness<br />
HOLDERNESS, NH<br />
Holderness is a lakeside community on New Hampshire’s secondlargest<br />
lake, Squam. Squam Lake includes 6,755 acres of water<br />
area with 67 islands. It is blessed with abundant natural beauty<br />
that has been protected and preserved over the years. The town’s<br />
pace is leisurely, and its people are friendly. Holderness is best<br />
known as the filming location for the movie “On Golden Pond.”<br />
The area is also home to the Squam Lake Science Center, a 200-<br />
acre site with exhibit trails and animals in natural enclosures with<br />
a unique outdoor classroom for all ages. The center includes exhibit<br />
trails and features native New Hampshire animals in their natural<br />
environments. The town is conveniently located off of route I-93<br />
and is within proximity to Plymouth State University, which offers<br />
many cultural and educational opportunities. Holderness School, a<br />
private school, is located within the community. Major ski areas are<br />
within a 30-minute drive. Nearby recreation includes town beach,<br />
golf course, restaurants, marinas, lodging, shops, and Squam Lake<br />

Laconia<br />

The 17,000-resident “City on the <strong>Lakes</strong>” is nestled on the shores<br />
of three of New Hampshire’s largest lakes: Winnipesaukee,<br />
Winnisquam, and Opechee.<br />
With the picturesque Winnipesaukee River running alongside its<br />
downtown area, Laconia is a beautiful place to live and work. It is the<br />
largest city in the <strong>Lakes</strong> <strong>Region</strong>, with advantages that smaller towns<br />
often lack. It hosts Concord Hospital — Laconia, a 137-bed general<br />
medical and surgical facility with 24/7 emergency care, and <strong>Lakes</strong><br />
<strong>Region</strong> Community College, which offers 28 Associate Degrees and<br />
37 certificate programs; LRCC is home to over 1,200 students. The<br />
city has a well-respected school system and excellent sports programs.<br />
Saturated near the geographical center of New Hampshire, Laconia<br />
is the hub of the area known as the “<strong>Lakes</strong> <strong>Region</strong>” and offers yearround<br />
recreational activities. Laconia’s downtown offers a variety<br />
of shops, eateries, banking, and live entertainment, including the<br />
beautifully restored Colonial Theatre, the Cake Theatre, and the<br />
popular Lakeport Opera House in the village of Lakeport. Summer<br />
recreation includes all of the water sports (boating, sailing, water<br />
skiing, swimming, watching, fishing, jet-skiing, and windsurfing).<br />
The Laconia Country Club is an outstanding 18-hole golf course.<br />
While you’re in Laconia, check out the Belknap Mill, constructed in<br />
1823 and the nation’s oldest unaltered brick textile mill and “New<br />
Hampshire’s official meeting house.”<br />
A popular lake cruise leaves from Laconia’s famous Weirs Beach,<br />
aboard the Mt. Washington cruise ship, which holds 1250 passengers.<br />
Weirs Beach buzzes with beach-goers and thousands of tourists<br />
walking the waterfront boardwalk, shops, restaurants, arcades, and<br />
expansive public docking system. Laconia hosts the famous Laconia<br />
Motorcycle Week, the oldest motorcycle rally in the world, each June<br />
and the World Champion Sled Dog races each February.<br />
As for winter activities, Laconia offers proximity to skiing at<br />
Gunstock Mountain Resort, cross-country trails, snowmobiling, ice<br />
skating, ice fishing, and winter hiking.<br />
Many special events take place in and near Laconia throughout<br />

Winnipesaukee, Meredith is a small New England town in the<br />
state’s <strong>Lakes</strong> <strong>Region</strong>. Antiquers will love the tax-free shopping at<br />
its many antiques and collectibles stores, while outdoor adventurers<br />
can get their fill of hiking and boating in summer or ice sailing and<br />
snowshoeing in winter. Don’t miss a trip on the 1849 Winnipesaukee<br />

Meredith, with a population of 6,764, hosts numerous craft festivals,<br />

award-winning inns, fine restaurants, specialty stores, antique shops,<br />

Lake Winnipesaukee, Winnisquam, Waukewan, Wicwas, and<br />
Pemigewasset all spread out throughout the town. Leavitt Beach and<br />
Waukewan Beach are popular town beaches. The Winnipesaukee<br />
Playhouse and The Interlakes Summer Theatre offer great cultural<br />
events. Four seasons of recreational enjoyment are widespread<br />

By landmass, Moultonborough is the largest lakefront community<br />
in the <strong>Lakes</strong> <strong>Region</strong>, with 60 square miles of land area and 15 square<br />
miles of water with 66 miles of shorefront encompassing several<br />
lakes. Moultonborough, with 5,163 residents, is noteworthy for<br />
having one of the lowest property tax rates in New Hampshire while<br />
offering an excellent school system. The area’s numerous lakes and<br />
ponds provide many water port activities. The village’s Old Country<br />
Story is on the National Register of Historic Places, and at the Loon<br />
Center, you can walk along quiet lakeside paths and listen for their<br />
call.<br />
Moultonborough abuts Sandwich to the north, Tuftonboro to the<br />
south, Center Harbor to the west, and the Ossipee Mountains just<br />
north of Lake Winnipesaukee. Moultonborough is one of eight<br />
towns with shorefront on Lake Winnipesaukee. It is unique among<br />
its neighbors in that its shorefront includes many “fingers” of land<br />
that jut out into the lake, allowing for countless surprise spots to<br />
situate a home or cabin.<br />
The main waterfront areas are along the so-called “Neck.” Down the<br />
length of the Neck, Moultonborough Neck Road eventually leads to<br />
a short bridge and onto Long Island, which covers 1,200 acres. Long<br />
Island is Winnipesaukee’s largest island and one of only five bridged<br />
islands on the “Big Lake.”<br />
Recreational opportunities include town beaches, camping, Squam<br />
Lake, Lake Winnipesaukee, Lake Kanasatka, Wakonda Pond and<br />

New Hampton<br />

New Hampton, with a population of 2,572 spread over nearly<br />
40 square miles, is virtually at the geographical center of New<br />
Hampshire. It is a rural New England village located at Exit 23 off<br />
routes 93 and 104, offering North/South, East/West access to all<br />
things New Hampshire. Situated between Lake Winnipesaukee and<br />
Newfound Lake, the Pemigewasset River intersects the community.<br />
New Hampton also has several additional lakes within its boundaries:<br />
Lake Waukewan, Lake Winona, Pemigewasset Lake, Jackson Pond,<br />
and Sky Pond. The village is home to the New Hampton School,<br />
a college preparatory school for high school-aged and postgraduate<br />
students. New Hampton embodies rural characteristics with its<br />
farms, fields, and antique homes. New Hampshire’s best ski resorts<br />
are within 30 minutes.<br />
OSSIPEE, NH<br />
Ossipee is a residential town of 4,349 residents in Carroll County.<br />
Some of the villages in Ossipee include Center Ossipee, Ossipee<br />
Valley, Water Village, and West Ossipee. Ossipee, where the first<br />
snowmobile was invented in the USA, borders Lake Ossipee, Duncan<br />
Lake, and the Ossipee Mountains. With much to enjoy outdoors<br />
in all four seasons, recreational opportunities include municipal<br />
parks, golf courses, tennis, campgrounds, fishing, hunting, boating,<br />
snowmobile trails, cross-country skiing, and beach/waterfront<br />

Located across the Winnipesaukee River from Tilton, this Merrimack<br />
County town with a population of 4,895 serves as a residential<br />
community and is very convenient for commuting to Laconia or<br />
Concord. The small town is filled with country properties scattered<br />
through its gently rolling hills — a reminder of its<br />
agricultural past. Highland Mountain Bike Park<br />
is a big draw, and it is an easy commute to nearby<br />
shopping and factory outlets at Exit 20.<br />
PLYMOUTH REGION<br />
Plymouth, with a population of 6,417, is a bustling college town,<br />
home to Plymouth State University, with an enrollment of 3,536<br />
undergrads. Easily accessible for the Newfound Lake <strong>Region</strong>’s rural<br />
communities of Rumney, Hebron, Alexandria, and Danbury, its<br />
quaint location is at the foothills of the White Mountains of New<br />
Hampshire. The Pemi River flows through the town, and “floating<br />
the Pemi” is a very popular pastime. Many rock climbing enthusiasts<br />
flock to nearby Rumney Rock. Tenney Mountain Ski Area, the Flying<br />
Monkey, and the Silver Center for the Arts are other attractions. The<br />

foliage scenery in all of New England. It is also home to the famous<br />
Sandwich Fair, which is a yearly statewide attraction. Squam Lake<br />

Tilton<br />

Sanbornton, with a population of 3,058, embodies all that<br />
one expects to find in an old New England town. This historic<br />
community features many original homes, churches, and gathering<br />
buildings constructed by early settlers. The rural character of the<br />
town is enhanced with stone walls, open fields, and grazing livestock.<br />
Agriculture is important to this community, as evidenced by its many<br />

One of the “Twin Towns” of the <strong>Lakes</strong> <strong>Region</strong> with a population<br />
of 4,067, Tilton hosts Exit 20 on Interstate 93, a major jumpingoff<br />
point for local excursions. Located in the southwest corner of<br />
Belknap County, it’s a local business and trade center. Tilton is home<br />
to the fifty-plus store Tanger Factory Outlet Mall, Lowe’s, Wal-<br />
Mart, Home Depot, Staples, J.Jill group distribution, BJ’s Wholesale,<br />
Market Basket supermarket, and other retailers. The prestigious<br />
Tilton School is located in town. Several small industrial companies<br />

Located just west of Wolfeboro, Tuftonboro is called “The Diamond<br />

Nestled in the foothills of the White Mountains and on the shores of<br />
Lake Winnipesaukee, Wolfeboro, with a population of 6,609, traces<br />
its history back to 1759 and is “the oldest summer resort town in<br />
America.” South and North Main streets display shuttered white<br />
colonial homes, and the town offers lively shopping at the water’s<br />
edge on Wolfeboro Bay. Town docks, quaint shops, fine dining,<br />
boutique inns, and cultural events are enjoyed year-round in this<br />
thriving small town. There is an 18-hole public golf course, plus<br />
upscale private courses in the immediate area, tennis courts, marinas,<br />
cross-country skiing trails, and downhill skiing. The summer months<br />
