CENTER HARBOR, NH 

This scenic resort town of about 1,040 residents features shoreline 

on Lake Winnipesaukee and Squam Lake, New Hampshire’s largest 

lakes, plus shorefront on Lake Waukewan. More than 19% of the 

town’s 16.5 square miles is water. The town is centrally located 

between Meredith and Moultonborough harbors (hence the name

FRANKLIN, NH 

Franklin has a small-town feel but is considered a city with about 

8,831 residents. It is situated at the confluence of the Pemigewasset 

and Winnipesaukee rivers, at the headwaters of the Merrimack 

River, and is host to 606 acre Webster Lake. Famed Congressman 

and Secretary of State Daniel Webster was born in Franklin. Trestle 

View Park in Franklin serves as a gateway to the city’s downtown 

and a trailhead for the Winnipesaukee River Trail. The Franklin 

Falls trail is a popular spot for mountain bikers in the region. New 

England’s first white water park located on the Winnipesaukee River 

has become a catalyst for downtown’s revitalization. 

GILFORD, NH 

Settled in 1777, the 7,860-resident town of Gilford preserves 

historical charm while attracting newcomers with its natural 

beauty and convenient location. The village, with its white 

clapboard antique homes, country store, and annual Old Home 

Day parade, retains the ambiance of bygone days. Recognized 

for its quality of life, Gilford is also home to a well-respected 

school system. The town’s lovely historic district includes the 

circa 1838 Benjamin Rowe House, which is on the National 

Register of Historic Places and serves as one of Gilford Village’s 

museum buildings. The Gilford Town Library serves as a cultural 

and educational resource. Next door is the Gilford Youth Center

beautiful Community Church is also tucked away in this corner of 

Gilford, just down the road from the Village Store. Gilford offers

from spring to fall. Gunstock Mountain Resort is one of New 

Hampshire’s oldest and most popular ski areas, and it is just ten 

minutes up the road from Gilford’s quaint main street. Along with

GILMANTON, NH 

Incorporated in 1727, Gilmanton is a classic New England town 

comprised of three villages: Gilmanton Corners, Gilmanton Iron 

Works, and Lower Gilmanton. Gilmanton Corners is a true “Currier 

and Ives” setting with its large, white historical homes gracing 

the gradual approach into the village. The huge old Church, the 

Gilmanton Academy (where Ralph Waldo Emerson attended school), 

the 1793 Tavern (with 18th-century wall stencils) and the village 

store lend a rich, historic feel to this community. Nearby attractions 

includes skiing and year-round activities at the Gunstock Mountain 

Resort, the Gilmanton Pub, the Gilmanton Winery, Crystal Lake, 

Shellcamp Lake and Sawyer Lake. 

Holderness 

HOLDERNESS, NH 

Holderness is a lakeside community on New Hampshire’s secondlargest 

lake, Squam. Squam Lake includes 6,755 acres of water 

area with 67 islands. It is blessed with abundant natural beauty 

that has been protected and preserved over the years. The town’s 

pace is leisurely, and its people are friendly. Holderness is best 

known as the filming location for the movie “On Golden Pond.” 

The area is also home to the Squam Lake Science Center, a 200- 

acre site with exhibit trails and animals in natural enclosures with 

a unique outdoor classroom for all ages. The center includes exhibit 

trails and features native New Hampshire animals in their natural 

environments. The town is conveniently located off of route I-93 

and is within proximity to Plymouth State University, which offers

within a 30-minute drive. Nearby recreation includes town beach,

Laconia 

LACONIA, NH 

The 17,000-resident “City on the Lakes” is nestled on the shores 

of three of New Hampshire’s largest lakes: Winnipesaukee, 

Winnisquam, and Opechee. 

With the picturesque Winnipesaukee River running alongside its 

downtown area, Laconia is a beautiful place to live and work. It is the 

largest city in the Lakes Region, with advantages that smaller towns 

often lack. It hosts Concord Hospital — Laconia, a 137-bed general 

medical and surgical facility with 24/7 emergency care, and Lakes 

Region Community College, which offers 28 Associate Degrees and 

37 certificate programs; LRCC is home to over 1,200 students. The 

city has a well-respected school system and excellent sports programs. 

Saturated near the geographical center of New Hampshire, Laconia 

is the hub of the area known as the “Lakes Region” and offers yearround 

recreational activities. Laconia’s downtown offers a variety 

of shops, eateries, banking, and live entertainment, including the 

beautifully restored Colonial Theatre, the Cake Theatre, and the 

popular Lakeport Opera House in the village of Lakeport. Summer 

recreation includes all of the water sports (boating, sailing, water 

skiing, swimming, watching, fishing, jet-skiing, and windsurfing). 

The Laconia Country Club is an outstanding 18-hole golf course. 

While you’re in Laconia, check out the Belknap Mill, constructed in 

1823 and the nation’s oldest unaltered brick textile mill and “New 

Hampshire’s official meeting house.” 

A popular lake cruise leaves from Laconia’s famous Weirs Beach, 

aboard the Mt. Washington cruise ship, which holds 1250 passengers. 

Weirs Beach buzzes with beach-goers and thousands of tourists 

walking the waterfront boardwalk, shops, restaurants, arcades, and 

expansive public docking system. Laconia hosts the famous Laconia 

Motorcycle Week, the oldest motorcycle rally in the world, each June 

and the World Champion Sled Dog races each February. 

As for winter activities, Laconia offers proximity to skiing at 

Gunstock Mountain Resort, cross-country trails, snowmobiling, ice 

skating, ice fishing, and winter hiking. 

Many special events take place in and near Laconia throughout 

the year, including country fairs, antique car and boat shows, flea 

markets, regattas, and arts and crafts shows.

Meredith, with a population of 6,764, hosts numerous craft festivals, 

fishing derbies, pond hockey tournaments, and chowder fest events 

and features an exquisite combination of lake and mountain scenery, 

including a scenic waterfront park and town docks. There are several 

award-winning inns, fine restaurants, specialty stores, antique shops, 

and galleries.

Lake Winnipesaukee, Winnisquam, Waukewan, Wicwas, and 

Pemigewasset all spread out throughout the town. Leavitt Beach and 

Waukewan Beach are popular town beaches. The Winnipesaukee 

Playhouse and The Interlakes Summer Theatre offer great cultural 

events. Four seasons of recreational enjoyment are widespread 

throughout the community, and the town has a well-respected 

school system with a wide selection of sports programs. 

If shopping and dining are your sports, Mill Falls at The Lake include 

four unique country inns surrounded by a restored 19th-century mill

MOULTONBOROUGH, NH 

By landmass, Moultonborough is the largest lakefront community 

in the Lakes Region, with 60 square miles of land area and 15 square 

miles of water with 66 miles of shorefront encompassing several 

lakes. Moultonborough, with 5,163 residents, is noteworthy for 

having one of the lowest property tax rates in New Hampshire while 

offering an excellent school system. The area’s numerous lakes and 

ponds provide many water port activities. The village’s Old Country 

Story is on the National Register of Historic Places, and at the Loon 

Center, you can walk along quiet lakeside paths and listen for their 

call. 

Moultonborough abuts Sandwich to the north, Tuftonboro to the 

south, Center Harbor to the west, and the Ossipee Mountains just 

north of Lake Winnipesaukee. Moultonborough is one of eight 

towns with shorefront on Lake Winnipesaukee. It is unique among 

its neighbors in that its shorefront includes many “fingers” of land 

that jut out into the lake, allowing for countless surprise spots to 

situate a home or cabin. 

The main waterfront areas are along the so-called “Neck.” Down the 

length of the Neck, Moultonborough Neck Road eventually leads to 

a short bridge and onto Long Island, which covers 1,200 acres. Long 

Island is Winnipesaukee’s largest island and one of only five bridged 

islands on the “Big Lake.”

New Hampton

NEW HAMPTON, NH 

New Hampton, with a population of 2,572 spread over nearly 

40 square miles, is virtually at the geographical center of New 

Hampshire. It is a rural New England village located at Exit 23 off 

routes 93 and 104, offering North/South, East/West access to all 

things New Hampshire. Situated between Lake Winnipesaukee and 

Newfound Lake, the Pemigewasset River intersects the community. 

New Hampton also has several additional lakes within its boundaries: 

Lake Waukewan, Lake Winona, Pemigewasset Lake, Jackson Pond, 

and Sky Pond. The village is home to the New Hampton School, 

a college preparatory school for high school-aged and postgraduate 

students. New Hampton embodies rural characteristics with its 

farms, fields, and antique homes. New Hampshire’s best ski resorts 

are within 30 minutes. 

OSSIPEE, NH 

Ossipee is a residential town of 4,349 residents in Carroll County. 

Some of the villages in Ossipee include Center Ossipee, Ossipee 

Valley, Water Village, and West Ossipee. Ossipee, where the first 

snowmobile was invented in the USA, borders Lake Ossipee, Duncan 

Lake, and the Ossipee Mountains. With much to enjoy outdoors

Plymouth 

Northfield 

NORTHFIELD, NH 

Located across the Winnipesaukee River from Tilton, this Merrimack 

County town with a population of 4,895 serves as a residential 

community and is very convenient for commuting to Laconia or 

Concord. The small town is filled with country properties scattered 

through its gently rolling hills — a reminder of its 

agricultural past. Highland Mountain Bike Park 

is a big draw, and it is an easy commute to nearby 

shopping and factory outlets at Exit 20. 

PLYMOUTH REGION 

Plymouth, with a population of 6,417, is a bustling college town, 

home to Plymouth State University, with an enrollment of 3,536 

undergrads. Easily accessible for the Newfound Lake Region’s rural 

communities of Rumney, Hebron, Alexandria, and Danbury, its 

quaint location is at the foothills of the White Mountains of New 

Hampshire. The Pemi River flows through the town, and “floating

Sanbornton 

England charm. Sandwich enjoys some of the most spectacular fall 

foliage scenery in all of New England. It is also home to the famous 

Sandwich Fair, which is a yearly statewide attraction. Squam Lake 

provides a breathtaking setting for this historic community. 

Tilton 

SANBORNTON, NH 

Sanbornton, with a population of 3,058, embodies all that 

one expects to find in an old New England town. This historic 

community features many original homes, churches, and gathering 

buildings constructed by early settlers. The rural character of the 

town is enhanced with stone walls, open fields, and grazing livestock. 

Agriculture is important to this community, as evidenced by its many 

small farms. Located on the highlands between Lake Winnisquam 

to the east and the Pemigewasset River to the west, there are many 

attractive reasons to settle here. Inspiring and marvelous views can be 

seen in all directions. There are 2 town beaches on Lake Winnisquam 

and Hermit Lake. Sanbornton offers a rural lifestyle to its residents, 

yet its proximity to exit 20 off I-93 offers unlimited conveniences, 

shopping, and restaurant choices. 

Sandwich 

TILTON, NH 

One of the “Twin Towns” of the Lakes Region with a population 

of 4,067, Tilton hosts Exit 20 on Interstate 93, a major jumpingoff 

point for local excursions. Located in the southwest corner of 

Belknap County, it’s a local business and trade center. Tilton is home 

to the fifty-plus store Tanger Factory Outlet Mall, Lowe’s, Wal- 

Mart, Home Depot, Staples, J.Jill group distribution, BJ’s Wholesale, 

Market Basket supermarket, and other retailers. The prestigious 

Tilton School is located in town. Several small industrial companies 

have located or expanded here. Tilton’s Riverfront Park project, 

fronting the Winnipesaukee River, has revitalized the downtown 

district. Tilton borders Lake Winnisquam and is host to the 18-hole 

Lochmere Country Club on Route 3.

Sandwich has a small population of 1,538 and is a quaint New 

England village with crisp, white antique capes, colonials, and a village 

influenced by artisans and fine craftsmen. This scenic town is a very 

artistic community yet has retained its country atmosphere. Located 

in the foothills of the Sandwich Range and Whiteface Mountain, old 

fashion swimming holes dot the river in the scenic landscape. The

Located just west of Wolfeboro, Tuftonboro is called “The Diamond 

in the Heart of New Hampshire.” The town comprises the villages 

of Mirror Lake, Tuftonboro Corner, and Melvin Village, with a 

total population of 2,429. It has miles of water frontage on Lake 

Winnipesaukee, Mirror Lake, and part of Dan Hole Pond, with 

scenic lake and mountain views. Located on the northern side of 

Lake Winnipesaukee, this charming small New England community 

has a wonderful feel of bygone days. Mount Shaw has an elevation 

of 2,930’. The Bald Peak Colony Club in charming Melvin Village 

features a historic private country club and private residential 

community along the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee. Melvin Village 

Marina and Lanes End Marina serve this community. Recreational 

opportunities include beaches, boating, marinas, snowmobiling, 

bicycle trails, cross-country skiing trails, fishing, hunting, and a

WOLFEBORO, NH 

Nestled in the foothills of the White Mountains and on the shores of 

Lake Winnipesaukee, Wolfeboro, with a population of 6,609, traces 

its history back to 1759 and is “the oldest summer resort town in 

America.” South and North Main streets display shuttered white 

colonial homes, and the town offers lively shopping at the water’s 

edge on Wolfeboro Bay. Town docks, quaint shops, fine dining, 

boutique inns, and cultural events are enjoyed year-round in this 

thriving small town. There is an 18-hole public golf course, plus 

upscale private courses in the immediate area, tennis courts, marinas, 

cross-country skiing trails, and downhill skiing. The summer months 

bring an increase in the population of up to 20,000 people. 

There is much to enjoy in Wolfeboro, including the Town Docks on 

Lake Winnipesaukee, the Lake Winnipesaukee Golf Club in New 

Durham, and Kingswood Country Club. Several town beaches and 

parks, the Libby Museum, Great Water Music, craft fairs, the Wright 

Museum, Clark House, and Kingswood Summer Theatre. Huggins 

Hospital has been serving Wolfeboro for over 100 years. The town has 

an excellent school system and sports programs. Brewster Academy’s 

80-acre campus sits on the water’s edge with its ½ mile of shorefront.

beaches. Popular for lake trout and/or 

salmon fishing, there are boat/speed 

restrictions. 

Paugus Bay

Location: Laconia 

Info: Lake Winnipesaukee feeds directly 

into Paugus Bay through the Weirs 

channel. Paugus Bay then flows into 

Lake Opechee through the Lakeport 

Dam. The city of Laconia obtains its 

municipal water from this lake. Access 

via the Paugus Bay State Forest; or 

private marinas (fee). 

Pemigewasset 




Location: Meredith, New Hampton 

Pleasant Lake 


Located: New London 

Info: Pleasant Lake flows out to the 

Blackwater River. The lake is classified 

as a cold and warm water fishery, with 

observed species including trout, 

salmon, smallmouth bass, pickerel, 

and horned pout. The state record 

landlocked salmon was caught in 

Pleasant Lake in 1914 (36.00”, 18 lbs., 8 

oz.).

may be restrictions on boat launch 

limits. Accessible via the Sunapee State 

Park, Sunapee Harbor, and other sites. 

Lake Waukewan 




Location: Meredith, New Hampton 

Info: 2.1 miles long with a width of .9 

miles. It is Meredith’s water supply, 

featuring clean water and an average 

depth of 22 feet. Waukewan flows into 

Meredith Bay of Lake Winnipesaukee 

through the Inn at Mills Falls. 

Webster Lake 




Location: Franklin 

Info: Webster Lake is a popular quiet 

lake in Franklin dotted with second and 

primary homes. Accessible via a ramp at 

Legace Beach. 

Lake Wentworth 

Area: 3,017.6 acres 



Shoreline: 14 miles 

Location: Wolfeboro 

Info: Lake Wentworth is located in 

scenic Wolfeboro, the oldest summer 

resort town in America. Lake Wentworth 

is the seventh-largest lake located 

entirely in New Hampshire. The 50-acre 

Wentworth State Park offers public 

access to the lake. There are at least 18 

named islands on the lake.

Hampshire’s largest and most famous 

lake, as well as the sixth-largest natural 

lake entirely inside U.S. borders. With 

approx. 72 square miles of surface area, 

it has 258 islands, approximately 625 

billion gallons of water, about 178 miles 

of shoreline, and a driving distance 

around the lake of about 63 miles. 

Winnipesaukee is surrounded by three 

mountain ranges: Ossipee, Belknap, 

and Squam. Also visible is the Sandwich 

Ridge and the Presidential Range, 

including Mount Washington. 

Winnipesaukee is a popular lake for 

all water sports, with many lakeside 

restaurants dotting its shoreline. The 

largest island on the lake is Long Island 

(1,186 acres), followed by Bear Island 

(780 acres), Cow Island (522 acres), 

and Governor’s Island (504 acres). The 

Lake Winnipesaukee area was rated 

the #1 retirement place in the country 

under the category of “leisure living for 

recreational and cultural opportunities” 

by MacMillan Travel’s Fifth Edition of
