On July 17, 1902, Willis Haviland Carrier designed the first
modern air-conditioning system, launching an industry that
would fundamentally improve the way we live, work and play.
I’ll admit, there’s nothing like coming in from my garage on a hot afternoon,
after working in the yard or playing a game of tennis and being welcomed with a
blast of cold air as I walk through the door. But I try to not let the temperature
keep me inside for too long. There are so many reasons to get out of the house
this time of year.
Speaking of tennis, I love the energy and excitement surrounding the
Cincinnati Open at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. Several of the world’s best
tennis players will be on the courts August 11 through August 19. Having served
as past president and board member with Tennis For Charity (TFC), an organization
instrumental in the development of the Cincinnati Open, I am proud to
have played a part in this event as well as all the amazing local programs funded

Then there’s an annual favorite, HOMEARAMA ® . Ellen and I are getting ready
to expand our outdoor living area and we know we will be inspired touring six
incredible homes priced as high as $2.2 million. (Preview on page 31)
My son Bobby is also behind another great reason to get outside in August—
Tour de CROWN—a bike ride for all abilities with three distance options starting
and ending at Fifty West Brewing Company, right off the Little Miami Scenic
Trail. Proceeds benefit Tri-State Trails. (See calendar of events on page 42)
And finally, there’s the hot food fans’ favorite: Jungle Jim’s Weekend of Fire,
which celebrates all the hot and spicy foods we love. It’s a hugely popular event
which draws thousands of hotheads each year. (Details on page 25)

Ten ideas to help create
an inviting first impression
We’ve all walked or driven past those homes that just call to us like sirens. Sometimes the
call is strong enough that we actually dream of living there. At the very least we want to
be invited inside and meet the people who surely must be as charming or elegant as their
home.
Maybe it’s the perfect splash of robin’s egg blue paint on the front door. Or it might be the
overflowing planters that hang like jewelry from the windows. If you are passing by at night,
it could be the inviting landscape lighting that turns each tree into a work of art.
Chances are, it’s multiple layers such as this that give a particular home a more welcoming
vibe than its neighbors. We invite you to take a step out to your own curb, turn around and
face your home and see which of these ideas might work to make it more inviting—or if
you are considering selling anytime soon—more marketable. ➻

Seating on the front porch, perhaps
in the form of two rockers
or a swing is a great way to add to
the inviting feel of your home. Plus it
encourages you to engage with neighbors
and the activity on your street.
If you don’t have a porch—or even if
you do—a bench placed farther out in
the yard or along the driveway is another
great option.

Whether it’s a cluster of ceramic
pots at your front door,
or window boxes framing your
windows, containers full of your favorite
flowers and greenery offer a serious
amount of charm and color. Mix
and match your selections to suit your
lighting conditions and color scheme.

Start right at the curb with
your mailbox. If your mailbox
door won’t stay closed or the
post is tilting like the Tower of Pisa, it
might be time to replace it with a new
version. A bed of drought-tolerant
flowers around the base or a climbing
clematis begin the charm streetside.

Clean is simple. No need to
hammer this home. Clean windows,
and power-washed siding,
driveways and walkways are hard
to beat when it comes to that wellcared-for
look.

If your door needs a bit more than a paint
refresher, you might consider replacing it.
New doors, typically constructed from steel
or fiberglass, will most likely be better insulated,
more durable, more secure and require less maintenance.

If your doorknobs, knocker, or street numbers
are dingy or outdated, think about
replacing them with something fresh and
modern. If you don’t have street numbers, think
about adding them either at the mailbox or near
your front door. Oiled-bronze finishes work well for
a traditional style, while brushed nickel adds a more
contemporary vibe.

Lighting, in layers, adds to the nighttime
charm of your home. Create a clear path to
your front door by placing fixtures in trees
so that they shine down on the walkway. Uplight
a specimen tree for a dramatic effect. Incorporate
a variety of lighting fixtures to create a feeling of
warmth and provide a sense of security. If you
aren’t able to use lights that require wiring, think
about solar fixtures.

Stairs, walkways and driveways all will benefit
from a fresh coat of paint or sealer. You
might want to cover your front steps with
an exterior grade tile. Or, if the budget permits, consider
reshaping your front walkway from a straight
concrete line to a curved paver approach. This adds
visual interest and often serves as a free-form type
of edge for your planting beds. ➻

Add splashes of color in
planting beds placed strategically
around your home—
the front of your yard near the street,
along driveways or walkways, and
immediately in front of the house.
Choose plants to frame, rather than
hide, your façade. Include a mix of
sizes, colors, and textures with a
blend of annuals, perennials and evergreens
for year-round color. Prune,
weed and mulch for that well-caredfor
look.

In homes with frontfacing
garages, garage
doors make up a significant
portion of what passersby see
from the street. Similar to your front
door, these can be painted and hardware
can be replaced. A color that
matches your siding will make garage
doors blend in, while a contrasting
color—perhaps the same as your
front door—will make them stand
out. And again, should it be time to
replace, newer garage doors are often
more durable and better insulated.

In its 15th year, the largest fiery food show in the Midwest returns to the international

Showgoers of all ages will love the live music and creative entertainers including stilt walkers, fire performers,
balloon twisters, LED performers, and more. A 360 Photo Booth will be available to capture the day’s
fun memories.

GPS Address: 6791 OH 48 (Oakland Road), Loveland, OH 45140
From I-275 North or South, take the Wards Corner Exit. Go east on Wards
Corner Road (toward Loveland). Turn right on Loveland-Miamiville Road,
(turns into Paxton Road, proceed straight). Turn right on OH 48 (Oakland
Road) and proceed about 1 mile to the entrance of The Reserves at Stone
Pillars Farm. Parking will be available on-site. There is no entrance to
HOMEARAMA ® from Smith Road.
IMPORTANT SHOW INFORMATION
There is no charge for parking as the ticket price includes on-site parking.
Parking is located on-site and will be a gravel lot. The HBA, HOMEARAMA ®
or the developer are not responsible for valuables that are left in cars, muddy
cars, gravel dust or muddy shoes. If it is raining, or if it has rained for a considerable
amount of time, you can assume that the lot could be muddy and
you should plan accordingly.
Delicious food, beer and wine will be available from Bishop’s Quarter and
The Wicked Pickle at HOMEARAMA ® . There are many fabulous shops, bars
and restaurants located in Goshen Township and nearby Historic Downtown
Loveland that you can visit on your way to the show or after the show. A
restroom trailer and ADA Accessible restrooms will be available on site.
Numerous events are being planned for HOMEARAMA ® 2024. All events and
details are listed on the HOMEARAMA ® website CincyHomearama.com.
No strollers, wagons or child backpacks with metal frames are permitted in
the show homes. No pets are permitted within the show site, except for service
animals (documentation is required for service animals). We suggest you
wear gym shoes or flat shoes to HOMEARAMA ® . There is a considerable
amount of walking at the show and there are steps in most of the homes.
