The severe storm’s walloping winds broke off large tree limbs around town and knocked down a streetlight at Main and Center streets as well as a streetlight in the Founder’s Bend subdivision. A big tree limb made a loud cracking sound as it fell from a huge sycamore tree along College Street between Cherry Street and Canal Street. The falling tree limb struck a nearby power line and utility pole generating a bright white electrical flash and knocking out power. Several smaller branches from the tree were stuck on the power line and electrical equipment of the utility pole. Another large tree limb broke off a maple tree on the front lawn of Groveport Madison Middle School Central. Yet another good sized tree limb could be seen on the ground of a front yard on Cherry Street just east of Lesleh Avenue. Several other properties had large tree limbs fall and other damage from the storm. Throughout town broken tree limbs of various sizes were scattered on the ground and in the streets following the storm. The Madison Township Fire Department made several emergency runs in the area, including to the Groveport Recreation Center where smoke arose from the swimming pool pump room. Groveport Recreation Director Seth Bower said there was no fire and no damage. “There was no damage to the pump station, only to the Frog Slide pump,” said Groveport Finance Director Jason Carr. “There ended up not being a fire, the pump had overheated causing smoke.” When asked if there was any other significant damage to city facilities Carr said, “Regarding city facilities/buildings, there was not much noticeable damage. We mainly had tree branches broken and two street light poles knocked down. AEP came out and fully restored the power source at the Rec Center, Public Service, and lift station on Main Street.” According to the National Weather Service, wind gusts from the storm reached up to 60 mph. Recent high temperatures and humidity contributed to the severity of the storm. More than 10,000 electrical customers in central Ohio lost power due to the storm and the power was out for six hours or more depending on one’s location. Cruiser alumni athletes take the field again
Plus meet this fall’s teams
By Rick Palsgrove
Groveport Editor
There’s a treat in store this August for fans of
Groveport Madison Cruiser athletics.
The Groveport Madison Athletic Department will
host the Groveport Madison Athletics Alumni Games
and Meet the Teams Day on Aug. 17 at Groveport
Madison High School, 4475 S. Hamilton Road.
At 1 p.m., alumni games will be held simultaneously
on the specific sport based fields for softball, baseball,
and girls soccer. (The boys soccer alumni game
will be held Aug. 10 at 6 p.m.)
The Meet the Fall Teams Day begins at 4 p.m. featuring
cheerleading, football, softball, boys soccer, girls
soccer, cross country, girls tennis, golf, and volleyball.
Food trucks for the events will be located in the
school’s north tennis parking lot.
“Softball and boys soccer have always had a good
showing for their alumni games every year,” said
Groveport Madison Athletic Supervisor Tommy
Snyder. “(Cruiser softball coach) Chris Downing came
up with the idea of putting the alumni games together.
Our boys soccer couldn’t do it on Aug. 17 since it’s so
close to their season starting, so they will have their
alumni game on Aug. 10. So, my thought was, let’s also
bring back the baseball and tennis alumni games. I’ve
reached out to Dylan Frank and asked for his help to
put things together for the alumni. It made sense to
put the alumni games this on the same day as our
meet the teams night. We wanted each alumni team to
have enough time to finish their game and to walk
around and eat at the food trucks and then see the new
fall teams for this year. Usually that would just be for
football. (Football coach) Mitch Westcamp thought it
would be a good idea to have all the teams introduced.
I loved that idea.”
Added Downing, “Having the alumni games first
allows them the chance to mingle and eat before the
Meet the Teams event. Last year I held an Alumni
Softball game and it went so well I thought we could
incorporate everyone this year. Softball has had this
scheduled for a year so our numbers are good. Also, I
invite previous coaches and last year I had several
show up.”
At the Meet the Teams event the coaches and players
for each fall sport will be introduced on the football
field in Cruiser Stadium.
When asked about such an event for winter sports,
Snyder said Cruiser basketball holds it annual Red
and Black Night featuring an alumni game every year
organized by basketball coach Lamont Hampton.
Snyder said the Groveport Madison Athletics
Alumni Games and Meet the Teams Day will be fun
and good for the community.
“I’m a Groveport alumni and I love to see people I
haven’t seen in a while,” Snyder. “These games bring
us all back together for a good time.”
Email Chris.downing@gocruisers.org or
Tommy.snyder@gocruisers.org for information.
The Groveport Madison Cruisers have been fielding
athletic teams since the school formed a baseball team
the 1890s.
Football and boys and girls basketball teams followed
in the early 1900s.
Other sports then were organized in later years.
During their history, the Cruisers have competed in
three leagues - the Franklin County League, Mid-
Eight League, and Ohio Capital Conference.
that included alumni players from the 1970s,
School district land
transfers a tough task
By Rick Palsgrove
Groveport Editor
A requested transfer of territory from
Groveport Madison Schools to Hamilton
Local Schools would not be an easy task.
“It’s difficult to do and not common,”
said attorney Adam Miller during a presentation
to the Groveport Madison Board
of Education on July 10. “It’s as rare as a
full solar eclipse in Ohio.”
Residents from a neighborhood located
in Obetz and Hamilton Township, but
whose children attend Groveport Madison
Schools, are seeking to transfer their area
to Hamilton Township Schools. The neighborhood
in question, McFadyens Acres, is
located within the boundaries of the city of
Obetz and Hamilton Township, just west of
Alum Creek Drive.
Miller said in his presentation that,
after a citizen petition is filed, the two districts
would have to negotiate boundaries
and financial equities, both districts would
have to approve a resolution of transfer,
and then the issue would have to go before
the State Board of Education for a decision.
“Even if the two districts agree, the
State Board may not approve,” said Miller,
adding that the State Board weighs factors
such as the impact on tax values and
financial aspects, district funding, racial
balance, a district’s place on the state’s
facility funding list, and a district’s place
on the state’s financial equity list.
He said the State Board also considers if
the proposed territory transfer is best for
the students and the districts involved.
“The State Board of Education disapproves
most transfers,” said Miller.
Two McFadyens Acres residents spoke
at the June 12 Groveport Madison Board of
Education meeting and requested the
transfer. They stated the neighborhood
consists of 11 streets and that a petition
signed by 178 of the 230 registered voters
in the area favor the transfer request. They
said their neighborhood is part of the
Obetz and Hamilton Township community,
participates in activities there, and residents
feel “very displaced” in Groveport
Madison. They said their kids play with
Hamilton Township children, especially in
Obetz area sports. They added, “We belong
in Hamilton Township, it’s good for our
kids, it’s what they need.”
According to the Ohio Revised Code,
school district property transfers can only
be requested in even numbered years.
The Groveport Madison Board of
Education took no action on the issue at its
July 10 meeting.
When asked how such a transfer would
affect the district financially and by enrollment,
Groveport Madison officials previously
declined comment.
According to Hamilton Local Schools
Superintendent Mark Tyler, “This is something
coming from members of the community.
The school district is in no way
involved. We are not in anyway attempting
to take property from any other school district.”
According to city of Obetz officials, the
city of Obetz has taken on a mediator role
to ensure its residents’ concerns are heard
and addressed appropriately.
“We have not received any further information
regarding the transfer request
between Hamilton Local Schools and
Groveport Madison Schools at this time,”
Obetz Public Relations Manager Kaitlin
Duncan. “I know it was a topic on
Groveport Madison’s Board of Education
agenda on July 10, but it was just a presentation
from their lawyers about the
process. The city of Obetz is here to be a
mediator between the districts, if needed,
to ensure that the residents' concerns are
heard and addressed appropriately. Our
commitment is to support our residents
through this process and facilitate constructive
dialogue between all parties
involved. We do not have an official position
on the transfer request itself, but we
are aware that a substantial number of
residents signed the petition for transfer.
We are committed to supporting our residents
through the process and facilitating
constructive dialogue between all parties
involved. The request is being led by a
group of concerned citizens. ”
According to Duncan, approximately
124 students would be involved in the
potential transfer to the Hamilton Local
Schools.
“This number is based on the latest
demographic data we have for the neighborhood,”
said Duncan.
It’s possible this number could be lower
as some students may be home schooled or
attend a private school.
“The transfer process is still in its early
stages,” said Duncan. “As we understand,
there are two main paths for a boundary
change. The first includes a petition, and
ultimately approval by the state. The
other, involves a negotiated agreement
between the two school districts. We are
aware that a petition was submitted, but
did not make the deadline and was rejected
by Groveport Madison. As a result, the citizens
are now approaching the Groveport
Madison school board and asking that they
engage in the negotiated process. As far as
we know, the Groveport Madison board
has yet to determine whether it will engage
in the negotiated change. The timeline for
this process is not yet defined and will
depend on various factors, including the
willingness of the boards to participate,
regulatory requirements, stakeholder
engagement, and state approval (if
required).”
Groveport was like in
the 1820s.
Surrounded by farms,
Groveport was a small town of a few hundred
people with log homes and businesses scattered
along a tree stumped filled, rutted,
often muddy Columbus-Lancaster Road (now
Main Street).
In those days the few people living, doing
in a truly local economy. The people here
back then mostly produced, bought, and sold
and bartered goods and services with each
other, which was a limited market to say the
least.
There was no railroad yet. The electric
interurban railway was a far off idea. There
are several creeks, but they are shallow and
not great for navigable shipping. No paved roads. The only major
transportation outlet was the aforementioned dirt Columbus-
Lancaster Road and Columbus was a far off place in the 1820s.
That all changed in 1831 when the Ohio and Erie Canal opened
in Groveport. Suddenly the town had a water route that put the
word “port” in Groveport. Now there was a way for farmers to ship
their goods all over Ohio and beyond. Local businessmen could
bring in more outside goods to sell as well as ship products efficiently
and swiftly for the era.
The canal formed a natural transportation intersection with
the Columbus-Lancaster Road (Main Street) that encouraged
The Lunch Box
This is a photo of the Lunch Box restaurant located on Main
Street in downtown Groveport as it looked in 1962. A notation
with the photo reads, “Mrs. George Leigh, proprietor.”
Though situated in a small building, the Lunch Box attracted
a loyal group of customers who enjoyed its offerings of plate
lunches, coney islands, and pizza. A sign on the door boasts
that the restaurant is “air conditioned.” The restaurant was
located on the south side of Main Street across from
Groveport Town Hall. It was demolished many years ago and
the expanded Groveport-Canal Animal Hospital now stands
on the site.
business growth much like the businesses that spring up around
modern freeway interchanges today.
The water of the Ohio and Erie Canal brought more people to
Groveport. Log cabins were remodeled and nice brick homes
sprang up. The canal gave more variety to the town’s business
offerings and also brought ideas to help the culture flourish.
The canal made Groveport. Without it, the town may have
become one of many ghost towns that are shadows on the Ohio
map.
As you walk around town looking at the historic canal sites, let
your imagination wander and envision the town as it looked in the
1800s in the heyday of the Ohio And Erie Canal. Picture the
homes and the people of that era going about their business.
Notice the chickens and pigs moving freely about town foraging.
Imagine a canal boat being pulled along by a team of horses or
mules and hear the steady “clop clop” of the steeds’ hoofbeats.
Imagine the wooden covered bridge and then the iron bridge that
replaced it on Main Street. Listen back through time and hear the
hammers of boat builders as they construct and repair canal boats
in what is now Blacklick Park. Feel the sensation of the water
whooshing out of Lock 22 as it raised and lowered canal boats to
meet the terrain. Realize how the landscape has changed over the
nearly 200 years since the canal opened. There are areas in town
where the canal passed through that were at a much lower level
than what the built up ground looks like today.
Temporarily remove the sights and sounds of the modern world
and connect with our ancestors by looking up at the sky and think
about how they, too, on a nice day would notice puffy, white clouds.
The canal days ended in the early 20th century when the boats
were replaced by trains, cars, trucks, and airplanes. But the
waterway served its purpose. It helped create a community.
Imagine it all. It is the town’s past that helped make Groveport
what it is today. It is your past. Embrace it.
National School Lunch
and Breakfast programs
Groveport Madison Schools announced
its participation in the Community
Eligibility Provision of the National School
Lunch Program and School Breakfast
Program for the 2024-25 school year. The
program allows all students enrolled at
Groveport Madison Schools to receive free
breakfast and lunch regardless of household
income.
The CEP is a provision from the
Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010
that allows eligible schools to offer free
meals to all students by eliminating the
need for household applications. School district
officials said, by participating in the
CEP, Groveport Madison Schools aims to
reduce food insecurity among students,
ensure that all students have access to
nutritious meals, and create a more positive
and inclusive school environment.
“We are excited to implement the
Community Eligibility Provision for the
upcoming school year,” said Groveport
Madison Schools Superintendent Jamie
Grube. “This program aligns with our commitment
to supporting the well-being and
academic success of all our students.”
Groveport Madison Schools families will
not need to submit meal applications for
the free meal benefits, as all enrolled students
are automatically eligible. The CEP
also eliminates any stigma associated with
free or reduced-price meals, promoting
equality and fostering a supportive atmosphere
for all students.
Bond issue moves closer to ballot

GROVEPORT MADISON SCHOOLS
Welcome Center
4400 Marketing Place, Suite B
Groveport, OH 43125
(614) 491-8288
By Rick Palsgrove
Groveport Editor
A proposed $78.3 million bond issue for
new Groveport Madison schools has taken
another step closer to being placed on the
Nov.5 ballot.
At the Groveport Madison Board of
Education’s July 10 meeting, the board
voted 3-2 to approve the Resolution of
Necessity for the bond issue. Board members
LaToya Dowdell-Burger, Seth Bower,
and Libby Gray voted in favor while John
Kershner and Kathleen Walsh opposed it.
“The next step is the July 29 board
meeting to do the final step of Resolution to
Proceed,” said Groveport Madison
Treasurer Adam Collier. “Then I will file
with the county.”
To place a bond issue on the November
2024 ballot, the board must file with the
county auditor in July and with the
Franklin County Board of Elections in
August. If the board wishes to wait to place
a bond issue on the May 2025 ballot, then
the ballot filings would be made in January
and February of 2025.
According to Josh Predovich of SHP
Architects said, if the bond issue passes, it
would take a year for design work and then
two years to construct the buildings, so the
new schools could open in the fall of 2027.
The district’s Master Facility Plan calls
for replacing the district’s existing six elementaries
and three middle schools with:
•Three new elementary schools for
grades K-4 with a capacity of 866 students
each;
•Three new middle schools for grades 5-
8 with a capacity for 706 students each;
•Additions to the high school that
include space for expanding the student
dining area, storage areas, and career tech
at the rear portion near Cruiser Stadium
and a two story classroom addition at the
southeast corner of the building.
The project has an estimated total Ohio
Facilities Construction Commission
(OFCC) co-funded cost of $273.1 million. It
could be done in two phases with the high
school addition and middle schools being
built first at an estimated cost of $134.8
million. Then the new elementary schools
could be constructed in a later phase at an
estimated total OFCC co-funded cost of
$107.1 million.
Predovich said the district is in line to
receive Ohio Facilities Construction
Commission funding for 53 percent of the
cost of the project with local funding providing
47 percent. He said there could also
be costs for locally funded initiatives, such
as for things like a middle school auditorium,
that would have to be funded 100 percent
locally. There will also be abatement
and demolition costs.
For the new middle schools and high
school additions in the first phase, the cost
would be funded with $71.4 million in state
funds and, according to the bond issue
Resolution of Necessity, $78.3 million in
local funds would be raised to construct,
improve, furnish, and equip the proposed
three new grades 5-8 middle schools and
constructing, improving, furnishing, and
equipping an addition to the high school.
Potential school locations
According to Predovich -First phase:
•Two new middle schools would be built
in the northern part of the district - one at
the current Middle School North site and
the other on land the district owns on Noe-
Bixby Road. One middle school would be
built in the southern portion of the district
at the Middle School South site.
Second later phase:
•There would be two new elementaries
built in the north - one at the current
Dunloe Elementary site and the other at
the current Sedalia Elementary site. An
alternative new elementary site could be
on land the district owns in Independence
Village, but there are concerns that this
site may be too small. An elementary
school would be built in the southern part
of the district at the existing Glendening
Elementary site, but a second option would
be to build this new school at the current
Groveport Elementary site where the baseball
fields now stand.
Groveport Madison officials have stated
overcrowding is a central issue facing the
district, but other factors considered in the
facilities planning process included the
age, condition, efficiency, adaptability, and
cost to maintain the existing elementary
and middle schools.
Visit gocruisers.org for information on
the Master Facility Plan.
Battelle-Darby Creek welcomes five baby bison
By Kristy Zurbrick
Staff Writer
Battelle-Darby Creek Metro Park welcomed
five baby bison this spring. They
were born at the park between May 24 and
June 16.
Park staff knew to expect them, just not
precisely when. A veterinarian performs
wellness checks on the herd a couple of
times a year. Earlier this spring, the vet let
park staff know five of the females were
pregnant. Staffers discover the babies during
routine perimeter checks of the bison’s
summer pasture.
“The babies weigh 30 to 40 pounds at
birth. By the fall vet check, they will weigh
300 pounds,” said Jill Snyder, Metro Parks
visitor engagement manager. Bison tip the
scales at about 800 pounds at maturity.
This year’s new additions bring the current
herd count to 14: one adult male, eight
adult females, and five babies.
Metro Parks first introduced bison at
Battelle-Darby Creek in 2011 in partnership
with The Wilds, a conservation center
in southeast Ohio for threatened and
endangered animal species. The park started
with six females.
Since then, several babies have been
born at the park, but rather than allow the
herd to grow without limit, the park works
with The Wilds to maintain a head count
that makes sense for the space and food
available to the animals and to ensure
genetic diversity. To do this, some members
of the herd are rotated out of the park
to other locations, including The Wilds.
“For us, it isn’t as much about having a
big herd, but more about the habitat being
as true to what it once was,” Snyder said.
The bison are part of the park’s habitat
restoration project. For example, some
prairie plants only grow after the seeds are
processed through a bison’s gut and with
the help of the bison’s hooves churning up
the soil.
“It’s a way to learn how a prairie benefits
from having large animals on it, since
historically they would have been there,”
Snyder said.
The public is welcome to visit the park
for a chance to see the bison which are currently
located in the summer pasture in
front of the nature center. The park also
has a winter pasture behind the nature
center.
Snyder notes that unlike animals at a
zoo, the bison aren’t always easy to spot.
They roam a much larger area and can be
shrouded by tall grasses.
Additionally, mothers sometimes hide
their young.
“You have to be patient and let them
show themselves,” she said.
The park has a bison camera that helps
rangers monitor where the bison are in the
pasture. Snyder recommends visitors stop
by the center first for help from a ranger
who can point them in the right direction
for the best chance to see the bison. She
also recommends visitors bring binoculars.
Fun fact: Baby bison are called “red
dogs” because their coats are a rusty
orange-red color.
“It’s a good way to distinguish them
when looking at the herd,” Snyder said.
To celebrate the new arrivals, the park
is hosting a “Bison Baby Shower” on June
30 from 1 to 3 p.m. Baby shower games are
planned. Follow signs from the nature center
to the pasture, about a five-minute
walk.
The Battelle-Darby Creek Nature
Center is located at 1415 Darby Creek Dr.,
Galloway, just outside of West Jefferson.
From April through September, the nature
center is open 9 a.m.-8 p.m. and the park is
open 6:30 a.m.-10 p.m. From October
through March, the nature center is open 9
a.m.-6 p.m. and the park is open 6:30 a.m.-
8 p.m.
For more information, call (614) 878-
Baby bison are known as “red dogs”
because their coats are a rusty orangered
color.
With the birth of five babies this spring, the bison count at Battelle-Darby Creek Metro
Park currently sits at 14: one male, eight females, and five babies.

July 28, 2024 -- GROVEPORT MESSENGER - PAGE 9
As our country continues to engage in
heated discourse over the role of senior citizens
in positions of power, there is only
one individual who is capable of uniting the
masses in the battle to become our overlord:
the great June Squibb.
Dedra
Cordle
The Reel Deal
Ever since the
actress snagged an
Academy Award nomination
for her supporting
role as a foulmouthed
octogenarian
in Alexander Payne’s
2013 sleeper hit
“Nebraska,” Squibb
has become one of the
world’s most beloved
character actors, an
elderly woman with
razor-sharp wit who steals scenes from
major stars and enthralls audiences everywhere
with her presence and comic timing.
But like any worthy ‘rags to riches’ tale,
she was not exactly a newcomer when the
indie movie catapulted her into the spotlight.
Decades prior to landing the role that
would put her into contention as a national
treasure, Squibb had been steadily honing
her craft on the stage and screen for more
than 50 years, just waiting for that breakout
opportunity that would bring her wider
acclaim.
Since she works in the entertainment
industry, a place notoriously averse to
allowing women over the age of 35 to have
a leading role in a movie, the Illinois-born
actress had to wait until she hit the age of
92 before she was given a feature-length
showcase.
And what a showcase it turned out to be.
In “Thelma,” the soon-to-be 95-year-old
Squibb is allowed to explore the range of
emotions, feelings, and perils that come
with being a senior citizen, especially one
who has been the victim of a crime. Her
character is angry, feisty, funny, and ready
to do revenge on those who crossed her.
Under the direction and writing of Josh
Margolin, who based the film and character
on his grandmother, both Squibb and
Thelma become a sight to behold, a genuine
force of nature who you want to rally
behind.
The film follows Thelma Post (Squibb), a
nonagenarian widow who is living on her
own but is regularly visited by her only
grandchild, Danny (Fred Hechinger).
Unlike some grandchildren, Danny always
looks forward to seeing his beloved grandmother,
even if she peppers him with hundreds
of questions about using the computer,
how to stream movies so she can watch
“Mission: Impossible,” and how she can
link up her cellphone to her Bluetooth so
she can better improve communication
with her family and remaining friends.
Through snippets of conversation and
There is a real sensitivity and
warmth to this movie. It’s kind of
like a sweet hug with a soft pinch
on the cheek afterward.
scenes of engaging in activities together, it
is clear that grandson and grandmother
truly adore one another, which is how
Thelma ultimately falls victim to the reallife
grandchildren telephone scam.
Instead of letting her ringing phone go
to voicemail for an unknown number,
Thelma accepts the calls and hears a frantic
“Danny” on the other end. Out of breath
and in tears, Danny tells his grandmother
he struck someone with his vehicle and is
currently in jail. In order to post bond, he
needs her to send $10,000 immediately to
the post office box of his attorney.
Desperate to help, Thelma wrangles up the
money to pay for said defense attorney,
only to later find out that she has been the
unwitting victim of a scam.
Her anger and frustration over the situation
is further compounded by the fact
that her daughter Gail (Parker Posey), her
son-in-law Alan (Clark Gregg), and grandson
have started having “the talk” about
placing her in an assisted living home.
Wanting to prove that she is still capable of
being independent, Thelma takes it upon
herself to find the scammers and recoup
her lost money. It matters little to the 90-
something year old that she may have to
lie, cheat, steal, or maybe even kill in order
to exact revenge.
Writing from a mostly comedic perspective,
Margolin is nonetheless unafraid to
explore the realities and perils of those who
are at an advanced age. While undertaking
her mission, Thelma knows that a hard fall
could spell disaster, yet she climbs several
flights of stairs to steal a gun from a
friend’s home. She knows that she has to
take pills to keep her blood pressure
steady, yet she continuously exerts herself
to get to Point A to Point B, which is the
business that has the P.O. Box inside.
Under a different director or screenwriter,
this movie could have easily gone to
a place that pokes fun at Thelma and her
somewhat willing partner-in-crime/old
friend Ben (the late Richard Roundtree) for
their declining mental and physical
prowess, but their advanced ages and capabilities
are never treated as a joke. Perhaps
it is because Margolin wrote the script as a
love letter to his grandmother, or perhaps
it is because all of the actors treat their real
and fictional counterparts with equal parts
exasperation and tenderness, but there is a
real sensitivity and warmth to this movie.
It’s kind of like a sweet hug with a soft
pinch on the cheek afterward.
