LaDawna Dent has always been
enthralled by the sight of the big
yellow school bus.
She remembers with fondness
all of the time she spent waiting
and watching in anticipation for
the vehicle to make an appearance
in her neighborhood, ready to collect
her two brothers and whisk
them away to a place called school.
“It was so fascinating to me,”
she said. “To watch it travel down
the road, looking so big when it
stopped at our driveway, then slowly
getting smaller as it disappeared
over the hill.”
She could not wait until she was
old enough to join her brothers on
that bright, beautiful and strange
looking bus.
When the time came for Dent to
begin kindergarten, she was filled
with nerves: nerves for her first day
of school and nerves for her first
time riding the school bus.
“I was excited and unsure of
what would happen, even though I
knew my brothers were on the bus
with me,” she said.
After walking through the doors
and making her way up those
curved steps, she looked around
with a sense of awe.
“The bus seemed massive inside,
windows everywhere with people
you did not know,” she said.
What she remembers the most
from her first ride was the kindness
that was shown by the bus driver,
Mr. Scott.
“It didn’t take long for me to feel
at ease thanks to my bus driver,”
she said. “He was always welcoming
and looked out for everyone.”
As Dent spent more time on the
bus, she says she became more
comfortable while riding on it. She
says she even began to have fun.
“Every day got better and better,
and it was fun to ride that bus,” she
said. “You make new friends while
looking out of a big window, watching
everything go by. I looked forward
to it every day of school and
who knew later in life I would
become a driver and route supervisor
myself.”
Dent has been a bus driver for
over two decades now and is currently
employed as a route supervisor
at the South-Western City
School District. The district’s transportation
department will soon
host its annual riding event to ease
the fears of its first time bus riders.
Dent’s previous feelings of
uncertainty on riding the big yellow
school bus are shared by many
in the country. It was part of the
reason why the district created the
First Time Riders program in 2015.
“Particularly with our younger
students entering preschool and
kindergarten, the intent behind the
First Time Riders Day was to alleviate
both parent and student hesitancy
and anxiety about riding the
school bus,” said Evan Debo, the
district’s executive director of communications.
“By providing families
with an opportunity to hear
directly from drivers about bus procedures
in and around the bus, parents
and students can experience
those important first time riding
experiences together — providing
both comfort and ease to the transportation
process.”
The First Time Riders Day will
take place on Aug. 3 at Central
Crossing High School, 3500 Big
Run South Road in Grove City. The
three-hour event starts at 9 a.m.
and it will be divided into learning
stations.
In addition to meeting a
few of the bus drivers and
route supervisors at the
transportation department,
www.columbusmessenger.com
Easing fears with First Time Riders event
the district says participants will
learn basic rules on being a passenger
on the bus and important tips
on how to be safe while entering
and exiting the bus.
A bus ride around the neighborhood
will be provided for children
and parents.
The district will also host a
Kindergarten-Parent Connect
event concurrently with First Time
Riders Day.
“Beyond becoming acclimated to
a school bus, we know that the
transition to kindergarten encompasses
so much more,” said Debo.
“To that end, the Kindergarten-
Parent Connect welcome event
held inside Central Crossing High
School offers families with a number
of resources to support them in
the start of their child’s educational
journey. Whether it be providing
information on math and reading
supports, free and reduced lunch
applications, or meeting new faces
at your child’s school, we have set
up plenty of stations families can
rotate through by need and by
school.”
Debo said the school stations
will be staffed by a rotation of staff
members that include kindergarten
teachers and/or principals.
Kindergarten students that visit
each station will be offered a supplemental
school supply kit free of
charge.
In other transportation news,
the district is asking parents and
guardians of students in preschool
through grade 10 to complete a new
transportation out-in/opt-out form
on or before Aug. 1 at 5 p.m.
According to Debo, the district created
this new form so the transportation
department can have an
accurate ridership count to “maximize
routing efficiencies among the
fleet of buses.”
The opt-in/opt-out form can be
found on the district’s website at
ing the contract with Tarazi for a number
of reasons. They include allowing the new
superintendent, Randy Banks, the opportunity
to “build rapport” with the board
without legal counsel in the background;
her lack of involvement in a board decision
to solicit the legal services of Tarazi; and
what she feels is a lack of fiscal responsibility
to the taxpayers.
“I do question if we are honestly being
financially responsible with the district
and taxpayers’ funds when we are voting
on a contract for this purpose or expense,”
she said.
According to the service agreement,
Tarazi will be compensated with a flat rate
of $9,000 per month for routine services.
This includes attending regular and special
board meetings at the request of the board
president; drafting legislation upon
request of the board or administration; and
drafting routine documents, legal memoranda,
and legal opinions as requested by
the board or administration.
The routine services also include providing
legal advice on public law; responding
to district officials about legal matters; and
providing legal training for school board
members and administrators.
Tarazi will also bill the district at a separate
rate of $300 per hour for non-routine
services. In the agreement, non-routine
services are described as any legal service
that is not covered under the routine category.
Non-routine services will have to be
authorized by the board.
Additional provisions in the contract
state that Tarazi may charge the district
for expenses incurred on its behalf. This
may include, but is not limited to, the
duplication of binding documents; telecopy;
telefax; fax and long-distance telephone
calls; postal services; and expenses for computerized
legal research and other business
expenses as approved by the board.
Tarazi has provided legal services to the
district since January of 2024. He was contacted
by D’Angelo Steele who says the
board wanted clarification and guidance on
how to navigate a significant personnel
matter. That personnel matter was the
investigation into an elementary school
principal and a school nurse who were
accused of improperly handling a suspected
case of child abuse. The board later
cleared the principal, Jenniffer Kauffeld of
Buckeye Woods Elementary, of wrongdoing,
The legal matter with the nurse is still
unresolved.
D’Angelo Steele said during the meeting
that she reached out to Tarazi because she
did not feel as if the board, which had just
sworn in three new members that month,
were receiving sufficient information to
guide them through the legal process.
“When we were brought onto this board,
a lot was thrown at us and we needed clarity
that we were not getting,” she said. “We
were trying to answer a lot of your questions
(about the matter), answer a lot of
your emails, and we needed some help.”
A service agreement with Hillard-based attorney Omar Tarazi has raised the ire of
some members of the South-Western City Schools District community. All of the seats
at the special meeting, which was held at the South-Western Career Academy’s event
center, were filled. A majority of the crowd were holding signs expressing their displeasure
at the board’s decision to approve the service agreement with Tarazi.
At the time, the board did not vote on
approving a contract with Tarazi. His legal
services were approved via a verbal motion
under an item for discussion. Peterson also
did not vote in favor of the motion, stating
that she was not involved in his selection to
provide legal services to the district.
In March, Tarazi assisted the district in
the search for a new superintendent following
the retirement of Dr. Bill Wise.
According to district officials, Tarazi
worked in conjunction with search firm K-
12 Business Consulting to help draft the
contract for the new superintendent. The
district set a budget of $75,000 for the
search process. Tarazi billed the district
roughly $39,000 for his legal services in the
superintendent search.
Since Tarazi began working for the
board and district in January, he has billed
the district approximately $85,800 for legal
services. Included in that amount is the
invoice for the superintendent search. In
comparison to the other law firms and
attorneys the district employs, the district
has paid $112,000 to Rich & Gillis;
$102,000 to Bricker Graydon; $10,000 to
Ice Miller Law; $5,000 to Zeiger, Tigges,
and Little LLP; and $1,000 to Scott
Scriven. The district also uses the services
of Frost Brown Todd but the Columbusbased
law firm has yet to bill the district as
of June 30.
The employment of Tarazi has raised
the ire of some members of the community.
All of the seats at the special meeting,
which was held at the South-Western
Career Academy’s event center, were filled.
A majority of the crowd were holding signs
expressing their displeasure at the board’s
decision to approve the service agreement
with Tarazi.
Chandra Fredrick called the employment
of Tarazi a “gross misuse” of taxpayer
dollars.
“He is making more money than our
teachers do,” she said.
She explained that she does not have an
issue with the district spending money on
legal representation, nor does she have an
issue with the district employing a number
of law firms and attorneys. She said what
concerns her about the employment of
Tarazi is his “lack of experience” in education
law.
“He is not experienced in education law,
and that law firm that he runs out of his
home office is not an education law focused
firm,” she said. “All of the other law firms
that the district uses are experienced in
education law. That is what they have been
doing for our district for a long time. They
handle the personnel issues, they handle
workers compensation, they handle the
hirings and firings, and they handle financial
issues and lawsuits. Omar Tarazi is
not experienced in any of that.”
The Grove City Messenger reached out
to Tarazi, who was not present at the special
meeting, to inquire about his experience
in education law and his school-based
clientele. He has not provided a response
as of press time. On the Tarazi Law website,
it states that he has “successfully represented
hundreds of clients in a diverse
Life’s lessons get thrown at us from our
moment of birth and never cease until we
do. Some of us learn quickly, others struggle
to grasp the teachings throughout life. I
fall into yet another category, one that may
be summed up by the title of the 1985 country
hit song by Steve Wariner who sang,
“Some Fools Never Learn,” a song that
explores realizing the error of one’s ways
but repeatedly and inexplicably still making
the same mistakes. Even if life was
graded on a big curve, as many of my old
classroom teachings were, I’d still flunk.
Yes, the tipoffs that I was in store for a difficult
lifelong journey of learning came
early for me. In retrospect, perhaps Dennis
the Menace was not a good hero for me to
have mimicked.
I quickly learned mom was a force to be
reckoned with. I could never fool her, she’d
always know when I was fibbing, which
was quite often. When she told me to clean
my bedroom, she always knew I threw
everything under my bed or into the closet.
Did I wash my hands and brush my teeth?
“Sure mom.” She never bought it. Did I raid
the cookie jar? “No mom.” “You still have
cookie crumbs on your cheeks.” I thought
I’d mastered the covert art of shoveling my
dreaded green peas into my napkin with
my fork at the dinner table when she
wasn’t looking, but she always knew, and it
was no dessert until I retrieved and ate
them. Dad wasn’t so difficult to fool. I could
run almost anything by him. The key was
waiting for him to become totally hypnotized
by one of his sports shows.
When I entered school, I was (un)fortunate
to have an older brother around to
give me (un)sound advice and ensure I
made the same growing mistakes that he
did. He taught me to, “never do today what
you can put off until tomorrow.” As I grew
older and kept testing the wisdom of that
advice it finally dawned on me that it never
worked for him, and my teachers will attest
it certainly never worked for me throughout
my school years. All it did was create
unnecessary last second fire drill assignment
completions and probably lower
grades than I could have had.
As the years ticked on by so did the
learning moments. We all remember those
family trips barreling down the road when
we drove mom and dad crazy yelling out,
“are we there yet.” Now, in my golden
years, I know silence is better. I fear hearing
a clap of thunder with blinding lightening
and a stern voice echoing from above
and yelling down, “sooner than you think
so you’d better repent and straighten up
fast.”
During my school days I dreaded having
to read a book more than mowing our lawn
on a hot and humid summer day. When my
English teacher called on me to answer a
book report question, she’d quickly catch on
that I hadn’t read a page. But I’ve finally
learned books aren’t so bad. I just finished
reading “Oppenheimer,” 600 pages that I
thoroughly enjoyed. My teacher would have
been so impressed, once they treated her
for shock.
The years have rolled on by since those
childhood days and so have the lessons. I’ve
confirmed dogs are man’s best friend and
always leave us too fast. Jim Croce’s ‘72 hit
song, “You Don’t Mess Around with Jim,”
guided me with lifelong wisdom on how to
stay out of trouble and deal with bullies
when he sang, “you don’t tug on
Superman’s cape, you don’t spit into the
At the same time, I learned Murphy’s
law. It’s proven itself to be true all my
years since. If something can go wrong, it
most probably will, so plan on it and get
used to it. I’ve also learned life is not fair
and don’t expect it to be. I’ve come to appreciate
life is truly a short journey and there
isn’t an answer for everything, sometimes
you must accept that it’s just the way it is.
A golden retriever never winning the
Westminster Kennel Dog Show has no
answer. I’ve learned to slow down, take my
time, question what the hurry is and read
directions first, before plodding on and
making so many stupid mistakes.
I’ve learned there’s truth to the saying,
the squeaky wheel gets the grease. I’ve
seen so many things in my lifetime get controlled
by a vocal minority while the silent
majority inexplicably puts up with it. I’ve
learned you can’t please some people no
matter how hard you try. Lobby efforts and
causes are good for someone but most probably
not you. The Public Utilities
Commission of Ohio looks out for big business
interests but rarely ours. Free is not
free, someone pays for it in the end, and
that’s probably you. Don’t try to figure out
the Stock Market, you’ll age before your
time. Everyone is after your money, most
notably the government. So, spend wisely
and control it and remember what rock you
hid it under. The government has taught
me you don’t need a budget or to spend
responsibly.
Over the years I’ve learned from studies
that say some food is bad for us while other
food is good for us. I’ve also learned that if
you wait long
So, eat
you read an article
that quotes experts
and anonymous
sources to draw supporting
conclusions.
There are undoubtedly
even more of
the same who can
claim just the opposite.
Life has taught
me that as sad, difficult
and painful as
times can be, passing
time will at least
help to gradually
soothe the hurts.
I’ve learned that
anything good will
eventually get ruined by us, usually out of
our insatiable greed. We’re currently seeing
the steady demise of sport after sport.
The loss of beautiful habitat and countryside
and irreplaceable history is being lost
and replaced with one housing development
after another. As the years roll on by,
I’ve learned to appreciate even more the
sacrifices so many made for our country. I
recently watched the events of 80th
anniversary of D-Day and wondered if our
society’s new attitude of me first, give me,
and I want more, can ensure the longevity
of our country if ever called upon again.
I’ve learned the biggest source of our
global warming is the hot air emanating
from our U.S. Capital building.
Congressional hearings are a complete
waste of time that rarely result in anything
productive. Partisan political hacks could
care less about finding the truth and do
nothing but filibuster as they try to protect
their party and behave with less maturity
than preschoolers out on the playground.
We’ve all learned our government is a
cesspool of corruption and deceit at almost
every level, along with a tattered and broken
justice system that’s being held together
by frayed duct tape. I’m still hoping to
learn how so many politicians have managed
to become so wealthy on their unimpressive
salaries upon finally leaving office.
There’s a song titled, “Ooh La La.” Its
chorus has a catchy line with a powerful
message that always sets my mind in
motion. ‘I wish I knew What I Know Now
When I Was Younger.’ I always wonder If
I’d have done things differently. I’d like to
think so, but then again, let’s not forget,
‘Some Fools Never Learn.’
Grove City’s Melissa Kwast captured a big win at the annual Rock N’ Race that ran
from July 11-14 at Dragway 42 in West Salem, Ohio. The Nostalgia drag race and
music fest features older drag cars and hot rods from across the country. Kwast
claimed her win on the first night of competition in a Gambler’s race made up of all
types of racers from a number of classes who all battle it out for the purse. Kwast
won seven rounds, outlasting the field of 101; even taking out one of her best friends
along the way. Her best time covering the quarter mile was 10.65 seconds at 125
miles per hour. Kwast started racing her Dodge Neon when she was a Grove City
High School student, then in 2008 moved behind the wheel of her dads 1968 Dodge
Dart. Ron Kwast is shown here directing Melissa through her burnout in the final
round. Drag racing is a team effort for the Kwast Family and the win was a great gift
to help celebrate Ron and Debi Kwast’s 50th wedding anniversary.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine recently announced that
the state has distributed one million fentanyl test strips in
an initiative to combat the opioid crisis. The strips serve as
crucial tools in harm reduction efforts, allowing users to
test substances for the presence of fentanyl, a potent synthetic
opioid that has been increasingly found laced in various
street drugs, contributing significantly to overdose
fatalities.
“By providing access to fentanyl test strips, we empower
individuals to make informed decisions and potentially
Evans Center, 4330 Dudley Ave. Adults of all ages are
avert tragic consequences associated with opioid use,” said
DeWine.
Unintentional drug overdose fatalities among Ohio residents
decreased by 5 percent in 2022, totaling 4,915
deaths, while nationwide there was a marginal 1 percent
rise in overdose deaths during the same period. Fentanyl
was involved in 81 percent of those deaths, often in combination
with other drugs.
Since April 2023, RecoveryOhio, the Ohio Department
of Health, and the Ohio Department of Mental Health and
Addiction Services have been working in cooperation
to distribute fentanyl test strips. Numerous
channels are being utilized, including county health
departments, harm reduction organizations, colleges,
law enforcement, Project DAWN sites, and
local outreach programs, ensuring broad accessibility
across the state.
Project DAWN (Deaths Avoided With Naloxone)
is a network of opioid overdose education and naloxone
distribution programs coordinated by the Ohio
Department of Health. By the end of 2023, Project DAWN
sites had ordered 795,300 fentanyl test strips.
This landmark distribution of fentanyl test strips aligns
with Ohio’s broader initiative that includes providing wide
access to the life-saving drug Naloxone.
Naloxone, when administered during an opioid overdose
(from heroin, fentanyl, or prescription pain medications),
blocks the effects of opioids on the brain and quickly
restores breathing.
In 2023, Project DAWN distributed 292,419 naloxone
units. In addition, the state of Ohio has installed cabinets
containing free doses of Naloxone on 48 public and private
college and university campuses, and more than 130 cabinets
at 65 rest areas across the state.
Ohioans can order free naloxone and fentanyl test
strips to be delivered to their homes through
naloxone.ohio.gov. For more information on resources
Proper sleep is
vital for students
If your child tends to doze off in class, it could be due to more
than a dull lecture.
Longer school days, extracurricular activities and after-school
jobs make today’s students busier than ever. “Sleep debt,” or sleep
deprivation, can lead to increased stress, moodiness and poor academic
performance, says the Better Sleep Council.
Students have less ability to learn and retain new concepts
when they are sleepy. In addition, it is dangerous for that same
tired student to drive to school, since sleep deprivation can lead to
impaired driving abilities. The number of driving accidents caused
by fatigue is increasing steadily.
Getting the proper amount of sleep is just as important to a student’s
health as diet and exercise. One way to be sure that your
children get the proper amount of sleep is to create a comfortable
sleep environment.
Following are four factors that can help you create a “dreamy”
sleep environment for students of any age:
• Mattress and foundation – Be sure your child’s mattress and
foundation meet his or her needs for support and comfort. It’s difficult
to get deep, restful sleep on a mattress that is too small, too
soft, too hard or too old.
• Light – Light is one of the body’s most powerful time cues. A
dark room is the most conducive for sleep, day or night.
• Noise – Sudden, loud noises from inside or outside the home
can disrupt sleep. Steady, low sounds like a fan or air conditioner
are soothing because they help block out other noises.
• Temperature – The ideal bedroom temperature is between
60 and 65 F, or 16 to 18 C.
Each school year floats on a sea of schedules – from
homework assignments to band practice and even
study hall.
Developing good organizational skills are a key
ingredient for success in school and beyond. While
some children may be naturally more organized than
others, there’s no need to worry if your child is more of
a “messy Marvin” than a “neat Nancy.” Parents can
put routines and systems in place to help children
become more organized. Follow these strategies to help
you get started:
• Designate a “study space.” Children should study
Back to school success
every night in the same location.
• Allocate a “study time.” Setting aside the same
time every night for studying and doing homework will
make it easier for children to approach the task.
• Get into the planner habit.
Parents should enlist the help of teachers as children
learn the ropes of planner use. Teachers can also
help reinforce the planner habit in the classroom.
Organization is the key to school success, and a few
steps is all it takes to help children move to the head
of the class this year.
LeBeau pens book about 2008 Steelers defense
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
In 2008, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defensive unit was a
dominant force in the National Football League, leading all
other teams in nearly every major statistical category and
playing an integral role in the team’s AFC Championship
and Super Bowl XLIII victories.
It is that season that London native and Pro Football
Hall of Famer Dick LeBeau chose as the focus of his forthcoming
book, “Legendary: The 2008 Pittsburgh Steelers
Defense, the Zone Blitz, and My Six Decades in the NFL.”
Published by Triumph Publishing, the book is slated for
release on July 9.
A football lifer, LeBeau was a member of Ohio State
University’s 1957 national championship team. He went
on to play for the Detroit Lions for 14 years, then
embarked on a 45-year NFL coaching career, spending 16
of those seasons guiding the Steelers’ defense. He retired
from the NFL in 2017 and decided a few years ago to look
into writing a book about the 2008 season.
“I thought it would be good if there was something down
in writing to commemorate what these guys did in that
year,” he said.
“Legendary” marks LeBeau’s first journey into authorship.
“They say everybody’s got one good book in them. It was
kind of fun to jump in the water and see what the temperature
was. I enjoyed it,” LeBeau said of the writing process.
That process spanned two-and-a-half years and
involved meticulous research.
“We had to substantiate a lot of stuff and research the
numbers,” LeBeau said, referring to the statistics that set
the team apart. “I went back and looked at every game
from that season and contacted a lot of the players and did
a lot of interviewing.
“I had a good memory of the general things that happened,
but I wanted to be pretty exact in what I was writing
about.”
LeBeau praised his co-authors, sportswriters Scott
Brown and George Von Benko, for their work on the book.
“The way we pieced it together, it makes for interesting
and light reading,” LeBeau said. “Readers can jump
around if they want. Each chapter covers a couple of different
areas.”
In addition to detailing the 2008 season, the book
includes anecdotes from LeBeau’s nearly 60 years in the
league, as well as recollections from players who helped to
bring LeBeau’s groundbreaking defensive strategy to life.
Those players include Hall of Fame Safety Troy Polamalu,
2008 NFL Defensive Player of the Year James Harrison,
and essential linebacker James Farrior, to name a few.
Born in 1937, LeBeau graduated from London High
School in 1955. He currently lives in Cincinnati with his
wife, Nancy.
About his hometown, LeBeau said, “I couldn’t have had
a better place to grow up, better people to grow up with, or
a better environment to prepare myself to have a very
happy life.”
In Entertainment
“Thelma” is like a warm hug
Columbus and Franklin County Metro
Parks will hold its inaugural Bark Bash
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 24 at Prairie
Oaks Metro Park. The event promises a
day of canine-centric activities and entertainment
for dog lovers and their fourlegged
friends.
In previous years, an event known as
Wag! Fest, organized by an outside group,
took place at the park every August.
Organizers of that event announced on
their website that the 2024 Wag! Fest had
been cancelled “due to unforeseen circumstances.”
“We were sad to hear WAG! Fest was
cancelled and knew the dogs and people
would miss the fun,” said Metro Parks
Executive Director Tim Moloney. “By providing
an alternative event, it allows us to
build upon the success of our previous
As our country continues to engage in
heated discourse over the role of senior citizens
in positions of power, there is only
one individual who is capable of uniting the
masses in the battle to become our overlord:
the great June Squibb.
Ever since the actress snagged an
Academy Award nomination for her supporting
role as a foul-mouthed octogenarian
in Alexander Payne’s 2013 sleeper hit
“Nebraska,” Squibb has become one of the
world’s most beloved character actors, an
elderly woman with razor-sharp wit who
steals scenes from major stars and
enthralls audiences everywhere with her
presence and comic timing. But like any
worthy ‘rags to riches’ tale, she was not
exactly a newcomer when the indie movie
catapulted her into the spotlight.
Decades prior to landing the role that
would put her into contention as a national
treasure, Squibb had been steadily honing
her craft on the stage and screen for more
than 50 years, just waiting for that breakout
opportunity that would bring her wider
acclaim.
Since she works in the entertainment
industry, a place notoriously averse to
allowing women over the age of 35 to have
a leading role in a movie, the Illinois-born
actress had to wait until she hit the age of
92 before she was given a feature-length
showcase. And what a showcase it turned
out to be.
In “Thelma,” the soon-to-be 95-year-old
Squibb is allowed to explore the range of
emotions, feelings, and perils that come
with being a senior citizen, especially one
who has been the victim of a crime. Her
character is angry, feisty, funny, and ready
to do revenge on those who crossed her.
Under the direction and writing of Josh
Margolin, who based the film and character
on his grandmother, both Squibb and
Thelma become a sight to behold, a genuine
force of nature who you want to rally
behind.
The film follows Thelma Post (Squibb), a
nonagenarian widow who is living on her
own but is regularly visited by her only
grandchild, Danny (Fred Hechinger).
Unlike some grandchildren, Danny always
looks forward to seeing his beloved grandmother,
even if she peppers him with hundreds
of questions about using the computer,
how to stream movies so she can watch
“Mission: Impossible,” and how she can
link up her cellphone to her Bluetooth so
she can better improve communication
with her family and remaining friends.
Through snippets of conversation and
scenes of engaging in activities together, it
is clear that grandson and grandmother
truly adore one another, which is how
Thelma ultimately falls victim to the reallife
grandchildren telephone scam.
Instead of letting her ringing phone go
to voicemail for an unknown number,
Thelma accepts the calls and hears a frantic
“Danny” on the other end. Out of breath
and in tears, Danny tells his grandmother
he struck someone with his vehicle and is
currently in jail. In order to post bond, he
needs her to send $10,000 immediately to
the post office box of his attorney.
Desperate to help, Thelma wrangles up the
money to pay for said defense attorney,
only to later find out that she has been the
unwitting victim of a scam.
Her anger and frustration over the situation
is further compounded by the fact
that her daughter Gail (Parker Posey), her
son-in-law Alan (Clark Gregg), and grandson
have started having “the talk” about
placing her in an assisted living home.
Wanting to prove that she is still capable of
being independent, Thelma takes it upon
herself to find the scammers and recoup
her lost money. It matters little to the 90-
something year old that she may have to
lie, cheat, steal, or
maybe even kill in
order to exact
revenge.
Writing from a
mostly comedic perspective,
Margolin is
nonetheless unafraid
to explore the realities and perils of
those who are at an advanced age. While
undertaking her mission, Thelma knows
that a hard fall could spell disaster, yet she
climbs several flights of stairs to steal a
gun from a friend’s home. She knows that
she has to take pills to keep her blood pressure
steady, yet she continuously exerts
herself to get to Point A to Point B, which
is the business that has the P.O. Box
inside.
Under a different director or screenwriter,
this movie could have easily gone to
a place that pokes fun at Thelma and her
somewhat willing partner-in-crime/old
friend Ben (the late Richard Roundtree) for
their declining mental and physical
prowess, but their advanced ages and capabilities
are never treated as a joke. Perhaps
it is because Margolin wrote the script as a
love letter to his grandmother, or perhaps
it is because all of the actors treat their
real and fictional counterparts with equal
parts exasperation and tenderness, but
there is a real sensitivity and warmth to
this movie. It’s kind of like a sweet hug
with a soft pinch on the cheek afterward.
Central Ohio
Projects in the
State’s Capital Budget
In my last column, I wrote about the construction
projects in our district that received funding in the
community portion of Ohio’s capital budget. You
may recall that, out of the total $4.2 billion capital
budget, $870 million was allocated to community
building projects--$170 million as a regular amount
and $700 million in one-time funds resulting from
the last biennium budget’s surplus in unanticipated
collections.
Over 130 projects totaling over $500 million of requests
surfaced from throughout central Ohio. The
Columbus Partnership, the public/private entity
that is charged with promoting our region’s economic
growth, acted as a clearinghouse for the collection
of information about all the proposals.
Columbus area legislators, both Democratic and Republican,
came together to prioritize the projects
and recommend funding for those we deemed the
worthiest. I was encouraged by the spirit of camaraderie
and collaboration among my colleagues. All
of us wanted to do what was in the best collective
interest of our area of the state and our work got accomplished
accordingly. Today I will describe some
of the projects that will affect central Ohio.
In extensive consultation with community leaders,
municipal and county elected officials, and business
leaders, six projects were identified that would have
far-reaching impact across the region. Collectively,
these six projects garnered about two-thirds of the
region’s total funding. They include $20 million toward
the Ohio Center for Advanced Technologies at
Columbus State Community College. The Center
will help train many area residents to take the
emerging jobs in high tech manufacturing, biological
sciences, medicine, construction, and information
technology coming to our region as a result of
Intel, Google, and others locating major facilities
here. The Columbus Symphony will obtain $18.5
million toward its new concert hall and expanded
performing arts outreach initiatives.. The Downtown
Capital Line, the first phase of a comprehensive
downtown area activity development effort for
residents and tourists alike, will receive $10 million.
The Heritage Bicycle Trail expansion will be funded,
in part, with $8 million. The $2 billion John Glenn
International Airport expansion will receive $7.5 million
in seed money. Finally, renovations for Nationwide
Arena will get $2 million for its facility
modernization. Although all these projects will require
significant additional private investment, the
state felt it should supplement such efforts for initiatives
that will affect so many folks throughout our
community.
I will describe some of the many additional smaller
central Ohio projects that obtained the remaining
funding in my next communication with you.
(Dave Dobos represents the 10th District in the Ohio
House of Representatives, which consists of parts of
have experience in education law, primarily
working in the private sector with private
regarding Tarazi’s employment was a perceived
“veil of secrecy” surrounding his services.
Fredrick noted the heavily redacted
public records requests that sought to
explain the services he was providing to
the district.
“It just feels like they are trying to skirt
open records laws,” she said.
The board said they are not violating
the Ohio Public Records Act by allowing
legal matters to stay private.
“It is hard to be transparent (with some
of the legal cases),” said D’Angelo Steele. “I
believe in HIPPA (the Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability Act), and I
believe in privacy for families that need
that privacy.”
She said she hopes that the board will
be able to provide clarity to the public on
some legal matters in the near future.
Prior to the vote for the contract for
Tarazi, Liskany said that Tarazi’s perspective
on legal matters have proven beneficial
to the board. Like D’Angelo Steele, she
said the board was not breaking district
policy by hiring Tarazi, nor were they violating
state and federal law by not sharing
all of the services he has provided to the
board and district.
“Tarazi Law has given this board an
opportunity to see things that have been
happening that we might not have otherwise
seen,” she said. “He has handled many
different situations that have arisen in the
district and there are things we cannot discuss
(publicly).”
Some members at the meeting seemed
unconvinced, raising questions as to why
the board put the contract proposal on the
agenda at a meeting where the public could
not provide comment.
Board president Boso said it was his
decision to call the special meeting and add
Tarazi’s contract to the agenda. He
explained that the special meeting was
needed to put newly hired employees on
the payroll and to fix a wording error on a
10-year 0.75-mill operating levy request for
the Southwest Public Libraries.
He said the contract for Tarazi was presented
to the board by outgoing superintendent
Wise and the administration. He
added that he felt it was necessary for the
board to “get it out of the way” before
Banks officially takes the position on Aug.
1.
One member of the audience disagreed,
stating loudly that the board only placed
the contract on the agenda to “shut them
up.”
Boso said they could believe what they
would like but added that it was an untrue
statement by the audience member.
Jackson Township Cleanup
Residents of Jackson Township, the city
of Grove City, and the village of
Urbancrest will be permitted to drop off
their unwanted household items at the
Jackson Township Administration
Building, located at 3756 Hoover Road,
Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4
p.m., holidays excluded. The service will
run through Oct. 4.
Items accepted include residential bulk
trash, bulk items, scrap metal and tires.
The latter item is limited to four per vehicle
per trip. Hazardous items will not be
accepted, nor will batteries.
E-waste, with the exception of monitors
and televisions, are accepted year round.
Although anyone within the township,
the city, or the village can participate in
the community cleanup campaign during
normal hours of operation, township officials
have requested participants sign in at
the office and let them know which materials
they are seeking to dispose of.
