The ASD shows provide a unique environment<br />

where buyers and sellers come together to do<br />

business. By having the entire show under one roof<br />

at the Convention Center it makes it convenient<br />

for attending buyers to cover more exhibits and<br />

spend more time with the exhibitors to make their<br />

purchases. The show continues to evolve and<br />

improve by separating product categories such as<br />

gift, toy, fashion and general merchandise making<br />

it easier than ever for buyers to pinpoint specific<br />

areas to see the products they are interested in.<br />

In addition, the show will offer seminars on topics of<br />

interest to the current retail environment including<br />

social media, search engine strategies, e-commerce<br />

and global sales strategies. All seminars will take<br />

place on site at the Las Vegas Convention Center.<br />

For over 63 years, ASD Marketweek has been serving<br />

the unique community of buyers and sellers in the<br />

wholesale and mass retail arenas. The show will<br />

take place from <strong>August</strong> 4th - <strong>August</strong> 7th, <strong>2024</strong> at the<br />

Las Vegas Convention Center and is expected to<br />

draw over 45,000 buyers including large chain<br />

retail stores, independent retailers, online retailers,<br />

distributors, boutique franchisers, mall carts and<br />

kiosks. The show offers the most comprehensive<br />

selection of general merchandise under one roof<br />

in the country.<br />

RETAILERS are starting to market backto-school<br />

as the summer is mid-way<br />

through. It is time to shake the sand from<br />

your sandals and start planning for the new<br />

season. The season that often equates to a<br />

bulk of most retailers annual sales.<br />

TRADITIONALLY back-to-school kicks<br />

off the largest sales volume since the<br />

passing of mothers and father’s day. After a<br />

summer that is often slow for retailing, we<br />

now gear up for the start of the best times<br />

to come.<br />

AUGUST is the start of school buying<br />

frenzy as students and parents scurry<br />

around to get supplies for their children of<br />

all ages. The highest spending is done for<br />

college-bound students who will require<br />

everything for their dorm or apartments.<br />

This is a great sales opportunity for<br />

retailers who specialize in house and home<br />

merchandise.<br />

YOUR store needs to be prepared for the<br />

onslaught of shoppers, many of whom<br />

will be last minute stocking up right after<br />

sending their students off to school. Make<br />

sure that you have enough inventory.<br />

Don’t be a day late and a dollar short. The<br />

season is fast and furious and you need to<br />

capitalize on it.<br />

BUYING patterns also indicate that<br />

apparel sales are the heaviest in late<br />

summer as most back-to-school outfits are<br />

purchased well before the school bell rings<br />

the bulk of buying will be at this time with<br />

Small Business Optimism Creeps Up<br />

OPTIMISM among small business owners is climbing, though it’s hard to call them “optimistic.”<br />

That’s according to the latest edition of the NFIB.<br />

IT shows that while the index reached its highest reading of the year last month at 91.5 — up<br />

1% from May — that figure has still been below the historical average of 98 for 30 straight months.<br />

“Main Street remains pessimistic about the economy for the balance of the year,” the federation’s<br />

chief economist, said in a news release. “Increasing compensation costs has led to higher prices all<br />

around. Meanwhile, no relief from inflation is in sight for small business owners as they prepare for the<br />

uncertain months ahead.”<br />

ACCORDING to the report, inflation remains the number one issue for small businesses, with 21%<br />

naming it as their chief problem, compared to 22% in May. Among the other key findings in the report,<br />

22% of business owners said they planned to increase compensation in the next three months, a fourpoint<br />

increase since May. A net negative 2% of business owners (that figure is seasonally adjusted)<br />

said they plan to make inventory investment in the coming months, up four points from May, while<br />

52% reported capital outlays in the last six months, the lowest reading since <strong>August</strong> 2022. And 4% of<br />

business owners said their borrowing needs were not completely satisfied, up one point from the prior<br />

month and the highest reading since <strong>August</strong> 2022.<br />

Walmart Shakes Up Business World<br />

WALMART may still be the world’s largest retailer, but a new report from Deutsche Bank says the<br />

consumer heavyweight is poised to become a non-retail powerhouse, too. While Walmart is still<br />

doing well in its core retail operations, Deutsche says it’s gathering steam from alternative value<br />

streams, which are boosting revenue and pumping up profits.<br />

SPECIFICALLY Walmart is doing well in five pools of opportunity within the ecommerce world,<br />

including Walmart Connect, its retail media network, membership fees, marketplace transactions,<br />

fulfillment services, and data monetization. “These five value streams are fast growing with high<br />

margins, and management emphasized that these categories are key drivers in the underlying<br />

transformation of the business,” writes Krisztina Katai, an analyst who follows Walmart for Deutsche<br />

Bank.<br />

ADVERTISING is a significant component. “It is a $3.4 billion business growing at 20%-25% annually,<br />

with about a 70% contribution to margin. The key difference between Walmart and other digital<br />

advertisers is the ability to attribute an ad to a specific customer in both a digital and physical<br />

experience,” she says. That means Walmart can deliver a digital ad and see how it impacts<br />

customers a week later in a store. “Further, Walmart can monitor advertisements and track trends,<br />

which can be shared with brands, giving them the ability to monetize in different ways.”<br />

“Initially, I spoke for just an honorarium,<br />

but within a few years, I worked up to almost<br />

$1,000 plus expenses per speech, and<br />

it wasn’t long before I commanded $2,500<br />

per presentation.” Jeanine started out as a<br />

consultant who used speaking as a marketing<br />

technique to attract new clients. Today, 50%<br />

of her business is private coaching and 50%<br />

who tend to speak for free make it hard<br />

for professional speakers to get the fees appropriate<br />

professional organization, for the chamber of<br />

is equally valuable to your prospects and<br />

your business. There is a plethora of financial<br />

planners holding investment seminars and<br />

attorneys sponsoring living trust seminars.<br />

Real estate brokers offer free workshops on<br />

how to buy a condo or how to get the most<br />

value from home fixer-upper projects. These<br />

workshops are typically offered at no charge.<br />

Jean Nave, owner of Motivational Dynamics<br />

and author of three books, including<br />

Women: The World’s Greatest Salesmen, left<br />

her position as marketing director for a computer<br />

firm to launch her own sales training<br />

company. She set her sights on having corporations<br />

book her for in-house training. To<br />

get her feet wet and to earn leads, she offered<br />

off-site seminars on how to decide if a career<br />

in sales is for you. She booked a room at a<br />

local hotel for $100 for half day and charged<br />

$35 per person for the seminar. She spent<br />

$20 on printing flyers, which she distributed<br />

to corporations, primarily through the administrative<br />

assistants. “In most cases, since my<br />

original topic was centered around my book<br />

and women in sales, I was able to interest the<br />

administrative assistant in the program herself,<br />

and once she bought into it, it was easy<br />

to get flyers posted.”<br />

nurses and teachers. “I knew from research I<br />

did for my book women in nursing were well<br />

educated but frustrated with their careers<br />

and teachers were also intelligent individuals<br />

but underpaid for their ability. My seminars<br />

let them evaluate if sales was for them and<br />

gave them tips on how to sell. I filled the<br />

seminar each time, and most of the women<br />

who attended were from large corporations,<br />

so they later became my connections to book<br />

corporate seminars.”<br />

After hosting ten seminars of her own, for<br />

which she made about $5,000 or more per<br />

day, Nave had the entrée she needed to take<br />

her talks in-house. Today, she is still getting<br />

calls from individuals who attended one of<br />

her original seminars. “They liked what I did<br />

and hung on to my name.”<br />

Nave says that what makes her memorable<br />

is that she is completely original. “I didn’t<br />

read what anyone else was doing in sales training<br />

when I started, instead, I looked inside at<br />

what I had been doing as a coach, manager,<br />

and self-motivator. Then I poured out what I<br />

did and developed a seminar around it.”<br />

After starting with the obvious night school<br />

and university classes and moving on to<br />

speaking to corporations, stockbroker Ronald<br />

Kent decided to find new ways to spread<br />

his reputation. He did the unthinkable and<br />

approached his competitors. He convinced<br />

savings and loans, banks, and federal credit<br />

unions that his conservative philosophy was<br />

Association, Kent sells his speaking talent<br />

as much as his financial expertise. His most<br />

developing creativity for problem solving. If<br />

people want to speak to promote themselves<br />

or their business, Kent advises them to tap<br />

into their creative reservoir to develop a personal<br />

trademark. When you are first starting<br />

as a speaker, learn the traditional, recognized<br />
