Skill, ingenuity reflected
in stunning hillside home
A MULTI-MILLION dollar
home perched on a cliff
overlooking Sumner won two
awards at the Canterbury
Region Registered Master
Builders House of the Year
competition.
The home, built by Hillview
Construction, was awarded
the Supreme House of the Year
over $1 million and the New
Home $2-4 million award in
the competition.
Perched on a steep hillside,
the ‘cliffhanging’ home appears
to float above the landscape,
showcasing exceptional skill
and ingenuity.
The judges said the home
embodies both beauty and
engineering excellence and is a
serene and artistic haven which
contrasts beautifully with the
dramatic view.
When viewed from the
entrance, this house presents as
an impressive one-storey build.
However, after venturing to the
opposite side, its spectacular
nature is revealed – a dramatic
two-storey cliffside façade
hanging above a nine-metre
drop.
The construction required
five-storey high scaffolding,
long-reach cranes, and
engineering mastery to anchor
the building securely to its
site, reflecting the unique
challenges of the location.
The Registered Master
Builders House of the Year
competition recognises the
finest homes, quality builders,
and craftspeople across New
Zealand. This year, the regional
competition saw close to 300
entries across seven regions.
‘Piano Man’
plays his
final tune
• By Dylan Smits
GLOBE-TROTTING musician
and actor Stig Eldred died
suddenly in his Sumner home
over the weekend.
The 72-year-old was a familiar
sight on Sumner beach and
performing in venues across
Christchurch.
Known as ‘The
Piano Man’ by
many, Eldred was
easily recognised
by his long white
hair and beard.
The musician
is remembered
by many for his
deep baritone
voice and piano skills while
Stig
Eldred
performing at The Chancery
before it closed due to the
earthquakes.
“He had to go and play for the
angels,” said close friend Clive
Greenwood of Stig’s death.
“He would walk into a room
and his smile would enhance
everybody in that room. He
would happily talk to anyone and
make them feel special.”
The Boy With The Star Tattoo
A Novel by Talia Carner
From acclaimed author of The Third Daughter comes an epic
historical novel of ingenuity and courage, of love and loss,
spanning postwar France when Israeli agents roamed the
countryside to rescue hidden Jewish orphans—to the 1969
daring escape of the Israeli boats of Cherbourg. 1942: As the Vichy
government hunts for Jews across France, Claudette Pelletier, a
young and talented seamstress and lover of romance novels, falls in
love with a Jewish man who seeks shelter at the château where she works.
Their whirlwind and desperate romance before he must flee leaves her pregnant
and terrified. When the Nazis invade the Free Zone shortly after the birth of
her child, the disabled Claudette is forced to make a heartbreaking choice and
escapes to Spain, leaving her baby in the care of his nursemaid. By the time
Claudette is able to return years later, her son has disappeared. Unbeknown
to his anguished mother, the boy has been rescued by a Youth Aliyah agent
searching for Jewish orphans. 1968: When Israeli naval officer Daniel Yarden
recruits Sharon Bloomenthal for a secret naval operation in Cherbourg, France,
he can’t imagine that he is the target of the agenda of the twenty-year-old
grieving the recent loss of her fiancé in a drowned submarine. Sharon suspects
that Danny’s past in Youth Aliyah may reflect that of her mysterious late mother
and she sets out to track her boss’s extraordinary journey as an orphan in a
quaint French village all the way to Israel. As Danny focuses on the future of his
people and on executing a daring, crucial operation under France’s radar, he is
unaware that the obsessed Sharon follows the breadcrumbs of clues across the
country to find her answers. But she is wholly unprepared for the dilemma she
must face upon solving the puzzle.
Cliffside rescue for stricken climber
• By Dylan Smits
A ROCK CLIMBER was seriously
injured and had to be airlifted to
hospital after falling from a cliff.
Sumner firefighters and a
paramedic had to assist the
patient up the steep gully
beneath the climbing wall near
Livingstone Bay in Lyttelton
Harbour.
The man’s climbing partner
called emergency
services for help
about 4.20pm on
Friday.
“It had taken
a bit of time for
him to get help,
so I think they
were relieved to Daryl Sayer
see us arrive,”
said Sumner chief fire officer
Daryl Sayer.
The man had been ascending
the 150m high Jane Fonda
Workout Wall which is a popular
spot for experienced rock
climbers.
Sayer and two other brigade
members were the first to trek
down the rugged and steep gully
to deliver first aid to the man.
He said the brigade’s recent
medical first response training
helped them treat the patient and
make him comfortable.
“Other than the arduous
TRICKY: Firefighters and a paramedic had to negotiate a
narrow walking track down the gully to reach the seriously
injured man.
conditions trying to get to him, he
was in a reasonably safe location.”
A Canterbury West Coast Air
Rescue helicopter then dropped
off a paramedic who took the lead
giving the man medical attention.
“It’s fortunate we did have the
helicopter because otherwise it
would have been a very arduous
task to get them all the way out of
there,” said Sayer.
The firefighters and paramedic
helped the climber walk 40m out
of the gully and away from the
cliff so the helicopter could return
and winch him up on a stretcher.
“Everyone was knackered after
climbing down and climbing back
up that hill section.”
Sayer said responses to climbing
accidents are rare for the Sumner
brigade and he wasn’t aware of
any falls from the Jane Fonda wall
in the past.
“It’s certainly made us more
aware of what’s around the hills.”
Two appliances from Sumner
also attended the scene and were
backed up by an appliance from
the Woolston station.
LIFT-OFF: A rock climber was rescued after falling from
a cliff near Livingstone Bay in Lyttelton Harbour. Three
firefighters and a paramedic assisted the seriously injured
man out of a deep gully on Friday evening so he could be
airlifted by a rescue helicopter.
Pancreatitis in Dogs and Cats: Max’s Journey at Kōwhai Vet
Pancreatitis is a serious condition in both dogs and cats, often
requiring prompt and intensive veterinary care. At Kōwhai
Vet, we recently encountered a severe case in a Miniature
Schnauzer named Max, whose journey through pancreatitis
and a subsequent rare complication highlights the importance
of early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment, as well as the
benefits of pet insurance.
What is Pancreatitis?
Pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas, an organ
crucial for digestion and insulin production. Inflammation
can be acute or chronic and is more common in middle-aged
to older pets, although it can occur at any age. The condition
can be triggered by various factors, including high-fat diets,
obesity, certain medications, and underlying health issues
such as diabetes.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
Common symptoms of pancreatitis in dogs and cats include:
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Abdominal pain
• Lethargy
• Loss of appetite
• Fever
These symptoms are not specific to pancreatitis and can
be associated with other problems, so diagnosis typically
involves blood tests to check for elevated pancreatic
enzymes, ultrasound imaging, and sometimes more advanced
diagnostic tools.
Max’s Story: A Case of Pancreatic Abscess
Max, a beloved Miniature Schnauzer, presented to us at
Kōwhai Vet feeling very sorry for himself, in a lot of pain and
having not eaten for a few days. His symptoms and initial
blood tests supported a diagnosis of pancreatitis. Max was
hospitalised, and medical therapy with intravenous fluids,
pain relief and medications to reduce nausea was initiated.
Despite aggressive treatment over the weekend and lots of
TLC, his condition was not improving. To find out what was
impairing his recovery, further investigation was carried out
and an ultrasound scan revealed an unusual complication: a
pancreatic abscess.
Max looking sharp after a groom
Pancreatic abscesses, while rare, are serious and can
complicate the treatment of pancreatitis. They require
immediate attention and often surgical intervention.
By this stage, repeat blood work showed that Max’s albumin
levels (a blood protein) had dropped significantly. This meant
that undergoing surgery at this stage would be high risk.
The decision was made to hold off on surgery until we could
stabilise him. To do this, Max needed a plasma transfusion to
provide him with essential blood proteins and, having barely
eaten for nearly a week by now, placement of an oesophageal
feeding tube to enable us to feed him easily and maintain his
nutrition during this critical period.
36 hours later, Max’s albumin levels had improved
dramatically. We were confident he was stable enough to
proceed to surgery. Such surgeries are complex and the
prognosis for Max, even with treatment, was not in his favour.
Max’s owners were understandably anxious, but they were
committed to giving him the best chance of recovery.
Thanks to the comprehensive care of our team at Kōwhai Vet,
the surgery went as smoothly as we could have hoped, all we
could do now was wait and see if Max would pull through. The
first 24 hours after surgery was a tough time for everyone as
Max remained listless and we weren’t sure which way things
were going to go. However, by the next day the transformation
was evident as Max perked up significantly and for the first
time started to eat some food of his own accord. After a full
week in hospital, Max was finally ready to return home, much
to the delight of his owners. We’re pleased to report that six
weeks on, Max is a box of fluffies and has more energy on his
walks than ever.
The Role of Pet Insurance
Max’s successful recovery highlights the critical role of
pet insurance. His treatment involved significant medical
interventions, including surgery, transfusions, and intensive
care. Pet insurance provided Max’s owners with the financial
support needed to pursue the best possible treatment without
hesitation which may not have been the case otherwise.
Conclusion
Pancreatitis in dogs and cats is a serious condition that
requires prompt veterinary attention. While most cases
respond well to medical treatment, complications like
pancreatic abscesses can occur and necessitate advanced
surgical care. Max’s story is a testament to the resilience of
pets and the importance of comprehensive veterinary care and
pet insurance.
At Kōwhai Vet, we are dedicated to providing the highest
standard of care for all our patients. If you notice anything
of concern in your pet, do not hesitate to contact us. Early
intervention can make a significant difference to outcomes in
a variety of illnesses and we want to make sure we can achieve
the best outcome possible.
Vegetation poses no risk to
road drainage – council
• By Dylan Smits
DYERS PASS Rd users want
more regular clearance of
drainage channels to prevent
flooding and icy conditions
during winter.
The city council and the New
Zealand Transport Agency
completed a $7.5 million upgrade
of Dyers Pass Rd, widening the
road, adding guardrails and the
gutters, in June 2021.
Governors Bay resident Phil
Jackson uses the road most
days to commute to work and
has concerns about how often
the gutters are maintained by a
roading contractor.
“They’ve put all this money
into building all this extra
infrastructure and then its not
being taken care of consistently,”
Jackson said.
Vegetation and debris could
be seen in the gutters on several
sections of the city side of the
road last Friday.
City streets maintenance
manager Steve Guy said the
roading contractor is expected to
clear the drainage sumps every
six months and the gutters when
needed.
He is confident any blocks
in the drains do not pose a
safety risk.
“The channel has been
designed that if it is partially
blocked, it still allows water
to flow to the next sump.
RISK: Dyers
Pass Rd users
say drainage
channels need
to be cleared
more often to
prevent flood
and ice risk
during winter.
The debris and
vegetation,
pictured last
Friday, were
cleared on
Monday.
This is why the channel is so
wide,” he said.
Guy said the gutters were
cleared on Monday ahead of
forecast rain this week.
There are no plans to change
the frequency of clearances and
Guy believes the current level of
maintenance is adequate.
Jackson reported his concern
to the city council on July 4 after
witnessing water flowing over
the road on the Governors Bay
side of Dyers Pass Rd.
“It was predicted to be below
zero that night. I was really
concerned it would create a sheet
of ice right across the road.”
The blockage causing the
flooding was cleared by
contractors soon after the report,
but Jackson believes the drainage
channels need to be cleared
more often to prevent similar
issues.
Another resident who wished
to remain anonymous has
submitted reports to the city
council three times – in September,
in May and on July 20 asking
for clearance of the gutters.
“It needs to be done monthly,
and especially before winter
starts they need to clear it thoroughly,”
he said.
Guy would not comment on
whether the contractor had
cleared the gutters after each
of these reports, saying he was
unable to respond before Bay
Harbour News’ deadline.
“He had such a unique voice.
He would just sing around the
Eldred was born in Sweden,
but was adopted by an American
couple and grew up in Los
He came to New Zealand as
a way to start touring with his
“When we’d have a drink on
the other 75 per cent of the time
“He is an amazing actor
Corcoran said Eldred was
He was also a professional voice
Always on the go, Eldred
typically spent three to six
Eldred enjoyed dressing
“He was very enthusiastic and
definitely had the look for it.”
Former addict’s programme
embraces power of the waves
A FORMER drug addict who
says surfing saved his life is now
using it to help others recover.
Brad Sparrow, 44, launched
Surf Ora last year to support
people recovering from addition
through surfing.
He set up the charitable
trust in collaboration with the
Christchurch City Mission.
Sparrow’s journey to sobriety
has been challenging. His addiction
started in Australia; by the
time he was 19, he was homeless
and reliant on meth, heroin and
alcohol.
“I went through a lot of childhood
trauma,” Sparrow told the
New Zealand Herald.
He experienced a relapse after
moving back to Christchurch in
2019.
“I was quite desperate and ended
up on the streets here. I ended
up in Hillmorton Hospital,” he
said.
One day his counsellor suggesting
going for a dip in the
ocean.
“I guess I started swimming
and had my first surf lesson in
2020, with Brittany Andrews
at Learn to Surf over in Sumner
… it just took off from there,”
Sparrow told the Herald.
Sparrow has gone on to
become a surf instructor and
mental health support worker.
He believes surfing saved his
life.
He says of the first lesson with
Andrews: “Something sparked
inside of me, and it just went
from there.”
Without knowing it, Andrews
helped trigger Sparrow’s recovery.
“I definitely didn’t think that at
the time . . . I think I really was
just a small cog in a wheel that
contributed,” she told the Herald.
Sparrow saw how surfing had
benefited his recovery, and began
to think about how the waves
could help others.
“If it worked for me, maybe it
‘If I could say one thing, it
would be just don’t give
up . . .’ – Brad Sparrow
might work for another person
that’s battling out there.”
He took his idea to Peter
Mannix, who runs Surf-able, a
popular surfing programme for
the disabled.
“Brad was talking to me one
day and he said he was interested
in running a surfing well-being
programme . . . he started talking
about his background and
what he was trying to achieve,
and I was in,” Mannix told
the Herald. “His story is quite
remarkable, you know, his transformation.”
Sparrow approached Harriet
English at the Christchurch City
Mission about the possibility of
collaborating. He had previously
given a talk at the mission about
his journey. English said “absolutely”.
The pilot programme was a
success, with Mannix, Sparrow
and Andrews working together.
A big part of its success is the
integration of Te Whare Tapa
Whā. Sparrow’s support worker
introduced him to the concept,
the Herald reported. Te Whare
Tapa Whā is a well-being model
developed in 1984 by leading
Māori health advocate Sir Mason
Durie.
“So you’ve got your hinengaro,
your mental health and
emotions, you’ve got your
wairua, which is your spiritual,
you’ve also got your whenua
from the land or the ocean
and whānau,” Sparrow told the
Herald.
“It’s about living in balance
with all those things.”
Surf Ora is not just about
surfing; it brings together all
elements of Te Whare Tapa Wha.
“It takes all those elements, I’ve
got friends now for life . . . so it’s
sort of like whānau and passing
the skill of surfing down to my
whānau, my nephew, my nieces,”
Sparrow said.
“It’s really good for your
emotions, just being out, out in
the ocean . . . I guess spiritually,
just being in something bigger
FRESH START: Surf Ora creator Brad Sparrow at New
Brighton beach and instructing at Learn to Surf at Sumner.
than yourself, it’s a sense of
calm.”
English told the Herald
the results from the pilot
programme were “incredible”.
“The buzz on the way back, the
excitement of doing something
that maybe they’d always
dreamed of doing and never had
a chance to . . . it was just pure
joy,” she said.
“What we had straightaway
was people wanting to come on
board and do it again and get
better and improve themselves.”
English said she noticed in
clients a newfound desire to stay
sober so they could get better at
surfing.
“If you’re using drugs, you
can’t do it very well . . . therefore,
if you think ‘I want to get better
at this, I’m not going to use so
much . . . I won’t drink so much,
because otherwise, I’ll be useless
next week’,” she told the Herald.
English said initiatives like
Surf Ora give clients something
to be sober for.
Sparrow says he knows surfing
isn’t the magical answer to
addiction. But he has witnessed
firsthand how it can change lives.
“Surfing is one tool in a multifaceted
recovery journey. I don’t
think you can think, ‘I’ll just surf
and that’s it, I’m all recovered’,
but it definitely helps,” Sparrow
told the Herald.
He has a message for people
struggling with addiction.
“If I could say one thing, it
would be just don’t give up . . .
I’ve been rock bottom in Kings
Cross in Australia with a needle
up my arm, really low.
“I just want people to know
there’s always hope and just hold
on to that hope, don’t give up,
and reach out to people.”
Tunes and bevvies bolster new market
• By Dylan Smits
A NEW MARKET has come to
Ferrymead with a range of stalls
and live DJs.
The Evil Genius bar hosted
the first Hightide Market with
about 200 people turning out on
Sunday.
“It was a really good time. It
was really busy for a first-time
market,” organiser Nat Halliday
said.
Several Lyttelton residents had
stalls, including Halliday himself
with Portside Notebooks. Dead
Video were selling CDs and
VHS, and Down Below Print Co
custom t-shirts.
The market was held in the
bar’s new space, The Lair, which
adjoins it.
“It’s a really good space for a
market because its something
that’s not really offered outdoors.
It has the freedom to drink, and
the DJ music,” Halliday said.
Lyttelton-based DJ Cafe Dre
helped provide a relaxed atmosphere.
Halliday hopes it will become
a regular market, but wants to
hear feedback from stallholders
and bar staff before committing.
Evil Genius plans to turn The
Lair into an events venue over
the next few months.
The market ran from 2-6pm at
1091 Ferry Rd.
ON THE DECKS: Lytteltonbased
DJ Cafe Dre
provided a range of tunes
throughout the afternoon.
FAREWELL: The Lyttelton Harbour Rotary Club is on hiatus after 60 years of fundraising
and support for community initiatives. The last six members, from left, are, Libby Ornsby,
Robyn Struthers, Neil Struthers, Donna Heenan, Ray Adams and Dick Brown.
• By Dylan Smits
A NEW GENERATION will
need to revive the Lyttelton
Harbour Rotary Club as the
group goes on hiatus, members
say.
The club has raised more than
$1.5 million for initiatives in the
harbour area during its 60-year
history, but low membership and
a lack of new volunteers has led
to the group calling it quits.
“It’s a real shame, but we’re
going into recess with the hope
that perhaps somebody might
pop up and go, ‘look I want to
keep this going’,” said treasurer
Libby Ornsby.
What remained in the club’s
coffers has been dispersed to the
Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade,
Cholmondeley Children’s
Centre, Lyttelton Netball Club
and Lyttelton Sea Scouts.
Once a busy club, it had
dwindled down to six members
which is under the specified 10
needed for legal recognition as
an incorporated society.
Being an incorporated society
is required under Rotary rules.
The club has not found any
new volunteers to fill the gaps
and the last members are retiring
or joining other community
LAST SUPPER: The club held a dinner to celebrate its
achievements after stopping operations.
fundraising groups.
“We’d like somebody else to
take over. It’s time to pass the
baton,” said president Robyn
Struthers.
The club stopped operations
on June 24 after a dinner held
to celebrate the work of its last
members.
Ornsby is proud of the club’s
work, from running car show
fundraisers to sending books to
children in Samoa.
“It’s always been about
supporting youth and the elderly
in particular with whatever
projects were needed.”
Struthers and Ornsby’s advice
to anyone who may want to take
up the Lyttelton Rotary mantle
is to stick to the organisation’s
core values of neutrality and
community service.
“You can’t have agendas.
You’ve got to be for the
community regardless of who
they are and can’t judge when
someone asks for money.”
The annual Christmas carols,
raffles and appearances at the
farmer’s market are just some
of the club activities members
believe will be missed by
harbour residents.
club can contact Libby
The Sumner Art Society will hold its annual art
exhibition this weekend, with the public invited to
view and purchase members’ artworks covering
an exciting variety of mediums and subjects.
Previously held at the Redcliffs Bowling Club,
this year’s exhibition is being held at the Mt
Pleasant Yacht Club. Overlooking the Estuary,
the clubrooms are where many of the art
society members meet each Wednesday
morning to work on their art, while enjoying
the companionship of their fellow artists and
sharing creative ideas.
Established in 1959, today the Sumner Art
Society has some 60 members, many of whom
have been busy preparing works for this year’s
exhibition. Among them are Sharon Soderberg-
White, who uses acrylic fluid pouring to produce
beautiful hand-embellished works, and has
generously donated one of her paintings as
a raffle prize. Suzanne Roberts, creates quirky
figurative works while Barry Mattingley paints
detailed, semi-impressionist paintings in
acrylics. Pencils and pastels are the favoured
mediums of some, including Rose Croft, who
creates portraits using pastels, and Robyn
Cassidy who draws exquisite animals in artist’s
coloured pencil.
Organiser of the exhibition, Kilmeny Keyse, paints
in oils on canvas, her subjects being landscapes
‘I’ve always considered myself
a Canterbury Draught gal’
Lion Breweries has
pulled the pin on
Canterbury Draught.
Denise Garland
reminisces
I DON’T REMEMBER the
last time I drank a Canterbury
Draught. Nor the first time,
come to think of it. But ever since
I’ve been old enough to drink,
I’ve always considered myself a
Canterbury Draught gal.
I did most of my growing up
in Christchurch, where my dad
was the head brewer at Lion’s
Canterbury Brewery. My family
had relocated there when Lion
shut its Hawke’s Bay plant in 1997,
and as I grew old enough, the
sweet, slightly bitter, but mostly
inoffensive flavour of Canterbury
Draught called to me.
I would go to high school
parties armed with a six-pack
of Canterbury Draught, sipping
from the cold black-and-red cans
as my friends downed bottles of
raspberry Vodka
Cruisers and
Smirnoff Ice
RTDs.
“I don’t know
how you can
drink something
so bitter,” they
would remark.
Canterbury
Draught always
had a bit of a
challenge in
trying to remain
a strong presence
in a market
saturated with
beers of the same
style, which
included fellow
Lion brands
Speight’s and Lion
Red, as well as Tui
and DB Draught
from its biggest
competitor, DB.
But CD drinkers were fiercely
loyal. My father told me a
Canterbury University student
once legally changed his name
to “Canterbury Draught” for one
year on the promise of regular
free beer. One of the old stands
at Lancaster Park had its roof
painted in Canterbury Draught
branding, despite DB being the
main sponsor of the Canterbury
men’s rugby team at the time.
And when my dad appeared
alongside former All Black
player and coach Alex “Grizz”
Wylie in a TV ad for Canterbury
Draught, he would get stopped by
kids in public and asked for his
autograph.
When I moved to Wellington
for university, I was disappointed
to find neither the liquor store
in Karori, nor the suburb’s
two supermarkets, stocked
Canterbury Draught.
When I visited Christchurch
the following month for my older
brother’s 21st birthday – held at a
function room at the Canterbury
Brewery on St Asaph St, no less – I
shared my conundrum with one
of my dad’s fellow brewers.
“Lion Brown is almost exactly
the same,” I was told. “Just drink
that instead”.
And so I did. And
Castlepoint. And
Southern Draught.
All Lion-brewed
sweet, fizzy, brown
beer that scratched
my Canterbury
Draught itch.
But each time I
returned home to
Christchurch, I’d
reach for a cold
CD out of the
fridge – my old
friend.
A couple of
years later, my
boyfriend brought
a four-pack of a
Belgian beer home
from the New
World where he
worked, that they’d
just got in.
It tasted so different to the beer
I was used to. It had so much
flavour! So much complexity! And
so I began drinking all sorts of
different beer styles; pilsners and
wheat beers at first, then stouts
and porters, even expanding into
sours.
Independent craft breweries
started popping up all over the
place and their beers became
more widely available. My dad
lost his job at Lion and so when
I returned to visit Christchurch,
the fridge was filled with beer
from Matson’s, his new employer,
instead. But even still, when I
spotted Canterbury Draught on
tap at a bar, I’d have to try a glass.
The news that Lion has pulled
the pin on its Canterbury
Draught brand, while not all that
surprising perhaps, did come a bit
out of the blue. Lion is too big of
a player and the draught style too
LONG GONE: The former Canterbury Draught brewery on St Asaph St.
cemented in New Zealand beer
culture for the growth of craft to
be behind its demise.
Canterbury Draught’s death
probably became a forgone
conclusion when Lion was forced
to close its Christchurch brewery
after it sustained major damage in
the February 2011 earthquake.
While CD continued to
be brewed in Auckland and
Dunedin, the fact the large, red
and black building no longer
loomed large at 36 St Asaph St
with its copper brewing vessels
in the large street-front windows,
would certainly not have helped
the brand’s cause. Having to
compete with the ever-popular
Speight’s for market share would
also have played a part.
Lion’s decision brings to an end
34 years of Canterbury Draught,
the beer that started me on my
journey to becoming a beer lover,
judge and now certified cicerone
(a certified hospitality professional
with expertise in selecting and
serving beer).
While it is a sad moment in
time for this Canterbury Draught
gal, I know all is not lost; I can just
take a cold can of Lion Brown,
close my eyes, and let the beer
transport me way back to all those
Canterbury Draught memories.
TREASURES FROM THE PAST
Saving Kilwinning Lodge – a close run thing
• By Liz Grant
THE BUILDING situated at 26
Canterbury St once more stands
proud in Lyttelton’s landscape. But
without some fierce determination
and commitment to the town’s
heritage, this could have been yet
another empty section reminding
the community of the damage
wrought by the 2010/2011
Canterbury earthquakes.
It was a close-run thing. At the
time of the quakes, Kilwinning
Lodge was owned by renowned
painter Bill Hammond, for whom
it was home and studio.
Because of the extensive
earthquake damage, the building
was deemed uninhabitable and
Hammond had to move out.
Lyttelton builder Lester Wilson
quickly put in wooden props as a
temporary measure to give it some
stability.
At that time CERA
(Christchurch Earthquake
Recovery Authority) had been
given extensive powers and could
order demolition. One day in
2011, word came through the
grapevine that a team was being
sent to demolish Kilwinning
the following day. Nobody had
informed Hammond.
Locals rallied. Christchurch
engineer Endel Lust got a stay put
on the order, but was granted only
30 days to come up with a plan.
Jane McBride, Hammond’s
widow, said that in the end
he spent around $30,000 on
measures to make Kilwinning
safe, until such time as it could be
properly restored. It was then a
case of finding a buyer who would
take on what would undoubtedly
be a complex and expensive
repair.
In December 2015, Hammond
sold Kilwinning to Kotahi
Engineering Studio.
The earthquake-damaged Kilwinning Lodge, with bracing in place and the carefully
restored building.
PHOTOS: KOTAHI ENGINEERING STUDIO
“There were a few interested
buyers,” said McBride. “But these
were the right people”.
As locally-based structural
engineers, the team at Kotahi
(formerly Structex) were aware
how many historic Lyttelton
buildings had been lost, and knew
they had the expertise to restore
this one example of the town’s
heritage.
In 2015, Kilwinning Lodge
became a Listed Heritage Place in
the Christchurch District Plan in
recognition of its historical and
social significance. For almost
120 years it had been home to
Lyttelton Freemasons, until it was
bought by Hammond in 2000.
Kotahi’s plan was to retain key
elements of the building’s design
and style, such as historic masonic
symbols, but also to make sure it
could be used as a modern office
space.
Hammond was very pleased
Kilwinning was being restored
with such care. Sadly he did not
get to see it finished – he died in
January 2021.
It was a huge and complex
Artist Bill Hammond inside Kilwinning Lodge.
undertaking. For a long time the
dominant visual of the building
was the exterior bracing –
essential due to structural damage
in the triple-brick walls. The
team built new foundations and
structural walls, which required
removing the original walls and
foundations, section by section.
Support structures, such as
steel posts, were introduced into
the external walls of the second
storey, which was remarkably
undamaged. When the original
brick foundation was removed,
the foundation stone was revealed.
In a cavity underneath were
coins of the day, a scroll with the
name of the lodge, the date of the
consecration ceremony and the
names of the master and officers
of the lodge. Along the way, any
heritage materials that could be
preserved or repurposed were
retained.
Restoring Kilwinning Lodge
was a really challenging project.
PHOTO: HOLLY BEST
On top of the engineering
complexities, there was Covid,
supply chain issues, time delays,
escalating costs and a difficult site.
But Kotahi held their nerve. The
restoration was completed in May
2023 and Kilwinning Lodge is
now Kotahi’s Christchurch office
space.
The Canterbury Kilwinning
Lodge had been formed in
Lyttelton in 1875, when the
Freemasons bought the land,
beginning construction of the
building three years later. It was
designed by lodge member John
Barnes, a London-born builder
and joiner who arrived in New
Zealand in 1874.
Originally it was a substantial
single-storey brick building
featuring classical elements
such as the entrance columns,
which have been retained in
the restoration. This style of
architecture was associated with
the masonic movement. The
under an English or Scottish
Constitution. Kilwinning Lodge
was the 585th lodge under the
Scottish Constitution. In the early
1890s it became the 23rd lodge
of the new Grand Lodge of New
Zealand. Freemasonry had grown
strongly in the late 19th and
early 20th centuries, playing an
important role in New Zealand as
a philanthropic organisation, and
in local politics.
John Grubb is celebrated as
the builder of one of the oldest
surviving colonial cottages in
Lyttelton, now a listed historic
place. He was actively involved
in the Freemasonry movement
and was a founder of Kilwinning
Lodge, and for many years its
treasurer.
In 1903, the original building
was badly damaged by fire. In that
rebuild, the brick walls were kept
and a first floor was added with
a timber façade with corrugated
iron on the rear and side walls.
When Hammond bought
Kilwinning, he had windows put
into the harbour-facing side of the
first floor, which gave it “beautiful
light and a great view,” McBride
said.
Kotahi Engineering Studio has
held several popular community
open days and has received very
positive feedback about what they
have achieved.
“Lyttelton people have a strong
connection to this building”, said
Kotahi’s Jo Leabourn.
Not only has the community
applauded the firm’s dedication to
the landmark Lyttelton building,
Kotahi recently received two
awards at the Property Council of
New Zealand awards.
26 Bay Harbour News Wednesday July 31 2024
Hilux overhaul brings a more supple drive
TOYOTA IS looking to take the
sales fight to the top selling new
Ford Ranger with some upgrades
to its current Hilux launched in
2015, and now among the oldest
Japanese utes on our market.
With an all-new replacement
still a while away, this version is
feeling the sales heat from a bevy
of newer rivals.
The aura and power surrounding
the Hilux brand combined
with a large and loyal customer
base will help it in the sales scrap.
However, that will only go so
far, and Toyota has responded
with some worthwhile changes
to its flagship Hilux 4WD SR5
Cruiser.
The major talking point among
ute aficionados is the upgraded
suspension and wider track,
with increases of around 140mm
front and rear. One thing you
notice almost immediately is the
substantial 20mm increase in rise
height to around 250mm.
This should be plenty for
more adventurous owners to
comfortably navigate even the
trickiest cross-country terrain
and protrusions, such as rocks,
and branches.
To accommodate the track
increase, Toyota engineers
overhauled the Hilux suspension
by extending the front arm and
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
stabiliser bar length and adjusting
the shock absorber angle for
greater efficiency. At the rear,
axle length is increased, and
the suspension dampers moved
further out.
For the first time, and in the
quest for improved cornering
stability and ride comfort, we
have a Hilux sporting a rear
stabiliser bar. How radical is that!
As a result of the suspension
changes, roll rigidity has
been enhanced by 20 per
cent, improving steering feel
when cornering and changing
either traffic or farm lanes. To
accommodate the increased track
width, wider over-fenders and
mud flaps are fitted, while the
front body extension is widened
to integrate with the front
bumper and fog lights.
More effective stopping
power is provided by new rear
ventilated disc brakes in place of
the former drum brake set-up,
while slightly larger front discs
are convincing show stoppers.
Those seeking a more
upmarket ute will find it in the
premium $63,390 SR5 Cruiser
six-speed automatic being
reviewed here.
Toyota’s drive-away pricing
covers all on road cost bases
with WOF, registration, 1000
kilometres of road user charges,
a full tank of fuel, fixed price
servicing package, floor mats,
and decidedly average three
year or 100,000km warranty. If
owners meet certain conditions,
the warranty that can be nudged
out to five years or 150,000km,
provided the scheduled servicing
is carried out at a Toyota dealership.
In reality all this does is
bring the warranty into line with
most its competitors.
Ample power is provided
by Toyota’s super dependable
150kW 2.8-litre turbo-diesel.
There’s an abundance of low
speed pulling power with 500Nm
more torque than the motor it
replaced three years ago.
This additional grunt is the
result of modifications to the
cylinder block, pistons, turbo
design and revision to the
cooling system.
The good news doesn’t end
there, with the extra muscle
ready to roll up its sleeves and
get down to some serious work
sooner, with 80 per cent of the
motor’s substantial bank of
torque available to draw on from
just 1200rpm. On the open road,
the engine is strong and effortless
in everything it does.
In low-speed town driving,
I felt noise levels were overly
intrusive for a premium ute,
especially given the additional
sound-deadening material
allotted to models at this end of
Hilux food chain.
Ratings out of 10: Performance 7; Handling 7; Build Quality
7; Comfort 6; Passenger and Load Space 6; Value for
money: 7; Safety – Five Star ANCAP rating.
Overall points out of 10: 7
The motor revels in off-road
terrain with plenty of throttle response
and pulling power to take
charge. The six-speed automatic is
an‘ oldie’ but definitely a ‘goodie’
and perfectly paired to the motor,
and it should be as they’ve
been working as a top-notch gear
changing combo for eight years.
Thanks to the wide body
enhancements, the double cab
feels bigger and more generously
provisioned than before. It’s
loaded generously with car-like
features such as a driver seat
height adjustment and there is a
telescopic and height adjustable
steering column. The steering
wheel houses multi-media and
phone controls with Bluetooth
capability for added convenience.
The touchscreen has also been
upgraded and the audio system
now includes Apple CarPlay and
Android Auto.
The premium ute push continues
with niceties such as push
button engine start, carpeted
cabin, satellite navigation, LED
daytime running lights and
chrome exterior door handles.
It’s not done there, with
standard features such as a ninespeaker
audio system, 18-inch
alloys, leather seating, fully size
alloy spare wheel and a driver
seats with eight-way power
adjustments.
There’s an equally impressive
arsenal of safety kit allotted to
the wide track Hilux 4WD SR5
Cruiser.
This is delivered by Toyota’s
acclaimed Safety Sense package
that adds a pre-collision system
with autonomous emergency
braking for vehicles, pedestrians
and cyclists, plus dynamic radar
cruise control, lane departure
alert and road sign assist. A
reversing camera puts you in
the picture and takes out the
guesswork when backing.
A clever re-work of the
leaf spring rear end and coil
sprung double wishbone front
suspension improves driver
and passenger comfort both on
and off road. More compliant
dampers and spring suspension
settings, have conjured up a more
supple ride than the firmer load
carrying biased suspension of the
work orientated SR version.
With the extra 20mm of
ground clearance there is more
body roll for the driver to
contend with when pushing the
pace through sweeping corners,
and over undulating roads.
Drivability would go up a level
or two if more work went into
tuning the steering so it’s sharper
and more responsive. It lacks
those two critical ingredients,
and consequently is off the classleading
ride and handling pace
set by the excellent Ford Ranger.
