Selwyn Loves Their Dogs
As an avid dog lover, they have always been a big part of my family and clearly, I am not the
only person in Selwyn who loves my dog. Did you know Selwyn has one of the highest rates of
dog ownerships in the country with one in five households owning a dog? Selwyn dog owners
also love the names Poppy, Ruby, Charlie, and Max. With 2,231 labradors registered for the year
2023/24, this breed is a clear favourite.
In the list of top 20 breeds for 2023/24, the Chihuahua made its debut, knocking off the
Bearded Collie from the previous year’s table. We love our dogs in Selwyn, so it is important for
us to make sure we have a good animal control service. Our team are on call 24/7 looking after
lost dogs and helping reunite you with your pets, helping with complaints, and running dog
safety education programmes and microchipping clinics.
With the district’s booming population (and pupulation) the Council has increased fees for
the first time in over three years to cover the increasing operational costs necessary to deliver
animal control services. Costs have been kept as low as possible, while still maintaining the
exceptional service and value for money the animal control team continually provide.

Recommendations for Local
Government
Last month a review made
recommendations for an overhaul
of Local Government, including that
Councils should have more control over
how public money is spent.
In New Zealand over 90% of public
money is spent by Central Government
leaving Councils to spend the remaining
10%. This makes it hard for us to provide
the infrastructure and services we know
you need.
The report also says that Government
should pay rates on Crown property,
for Selwyn this could mean valuable
new income from Defence and DoC.
We simply can’t continue to raise rates
to pay for the ever-expanding list of
things Central Government want us to
do, as well as tackling climate change
and caring for our environment.

Wow what an amazing time of the year
winter is. Frosts on the grass and on your
windscreens means extra care is needed
when driving, especially in case of

As our uniquely “New Zealand” New Year
we get to spend time together out in the
fresh winter air, walking Harts Creek or
Te Waihora or on the slopes. It’s even
better to come home to the fire and share
experiences with family and friends over
your favourite warm winter meals.
School is back and it’s fantastic to see
the new speed signs installed in our
communities.
This means a safer environment for
our Tamariki getting to and from kura
or school.
It’s an exciting time for Ellesmere.
The adoption of the Long-Term Plan
24-34 means Council’s focus will be on
delivering the new multi-purpose facility
“Whata Rau” for our communities now
and in the future.

Other recommendations in the report
might see Councils elected for a four-year
term, this would double the amount of
usable time between elections to deliver
for Selwyn. The report also asks Councils
to work together in our regions. Labour
and National have said they won’t be
considering the recommendations until
after the elections, so in the meantime I’ll
be working with our neighbours on issues
we can tackle together.

Census Data Reveals Selwyn Story
The first data released from the
2023 cencus continues to tell
the story of Waikirikiri Selwyn
as a fast-growing, young and
diversifying district.
Between 2018 and 2023
Waikirikiri Selwyn was the fastest
growing district in the country
with dwellings and population
both growing by 29%.
This increase is considerably
outpacing the rate for Aotearoa
New Zealand (6.3%) and Waitaha
Canterbury (8.6%).
Waikirikiri Selwyn residents are
younger, 37.6 years on average,
than those across the country
at 38.1 for all of Aotearoa New
Zealand and 39.1 for Waitaha
Canterbury.
While the population is younger
in general, there is a relatively
low population in the 20-29 age
group with only 10.3% within
this age group, compared to the
Aotearoa New Zealand average of
12.9%.
Over 50% of the total population
is under 40 years of age, while
50% of the population of Māori
descent are under 24 years of
age, with a median age of 24.7,
a full 13 years younger than the
total population.
Diversity is growing, as 84.1%
of Waikirikiri Selwyn residents
identify as European compared to
89.3% in 2018, and 91.9% in 2013.
Increasing number identify as
Māori (9%), Pacific Peoples
(2.4%), Asian (11.4%) and Middle
Eastern/Latin American/African
(1.5%).

Support New Zealand celebrates
a community champion –
someone who promotes
Neighbourhood Support
within their local community.
Last month’s June recipient
was Springs Ward resident
Lois Thomas.
Anyone who know Lois recognises
her as a tireless volunteer who
has given her time to many
past and current organisations.
She is a committee member
on the Liffey Lifestyle Village
body corporate and its local
Civil Defence co-ordinator; This
role is in association with her
participation in Lincoln’s Civil
Response Team under “Selwyn
As a committee member of the
Selwyn Lions and alongside
fellow members she helps
fundraise for community projects
through hosting events such as
“Designs and Desserts”; “Show
your Support”, a bra decoration
competition for Breast Cancer
and undertaking various catering
engagements.
While Lois has recently stepped
aside from her role as a volunteer
co-ordinator of the Springston
Enviro Community Garden,
a project she is most proud of is
the installation of the “pataka kai”
vege barrow located at the school
gate where you can purchase local
grown produce with the proceeds
being returned to the garden.

Relationship between Springfield and China celebrated
On 25 May, Luyi Duan the great granddaughter of Selwyn
resident Rewi Alley helped mark the ongoing relationship
between Springfield and China in a special ceremony with
the Chinese Minister of International Relations of the
Central Congress.
Educating Selwyn students on truck safety
To celebrate Road Safety Week in May, Selwyn District
Council and HEB Construction visited Springston School to
educate students on truck safety. This visit is part of a broader
campaign by the Council and HEB Construction, with more
visits planned.
New pipeline helps sustain Leeston wastewater
A $35.5 million wastewater pipeline project delivered by
CORDE across Ellesmere will futureproof the wastewater
system for Leeston. Our largest single infrastructure project
for the financial year was celebrated with a special ceremony
at Chamberlands Ford on 4 July.
New sculpture for district
Toro Atua, by Dr Areta Wilkinson (Ngāi Tahu), was unveiled on
6 July in Selwyn. Produced by SCAPE Public Art and funded
by partners including Rolleston Residents’ Association, it
draws on cultural narrative gifted by Ngāi Te Ruahikihiki ki
Taumutu.

Council and Lincoln University formalise relationship
Selwyn District Council and Lincoln University have signed a
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to identify and capitalise
on economic opportunities and expand knowledge sharing
activities including internships and staffing exchanges. The
MoU strengthens the long-standing relationship between the
two organisations.
Māori population
grows to 9%
Foster Park wins award
At the recent Recreation Aotearoa Awards, Foster Park was
named Active Park/Sportsground of the Year. Selwyn District
Council, RSL Consultancy and MCL Contracting accepted the
award on behalf of the many people and clubs involved with
Foster Park since 2009.

could escape
huts eviction

NGĀI TAHU has been asked
to allow iwi members to stay at
Greenpark Huts – but others who
live there will still be forced to go.
The move comes from
Taumutu Rūnanga which wants
Ngāi Tahu to reconsider its
controversial decision to evict all
of the 32 bach owners who have
to leave by June 30 next year.
The rūnanga’s council voted
11-10 to ask Ngāi Tahu to allow
the five iwi bach owners at the
huts to stay.
The rūnanga’s chair Dr Liz
Brown did not respond to
questions from Selwyn Times.
Questions included the motive
for the decision, and why only
Ngāi Tahu bach owners were
included in the recommendation.

In 2020, Ngāi Tahu told bach
owners they would have to go

Several weeks before the date,
Ngāi Tahu gave residents another
year to allow them more time.
In June, Selwyn Times revealed
Ngāi Tahu was to establish a
mahinga kai centre of excellence
on the site, surprising bach
owners. Ngāi Tahu has revealed
few details about the centre
including its size, location, and
timeline for its construction.
Bach owners will be responsible
for the demolition of their huts.
But in a twist, Selwyn Times can
now reveal Ngāi Tahu will pay
for the demolition if bach owners
sign an agreement by October
30. If bach owners do that, they
effectively lock themselves into
leaving by June 30 next year.
Bach owner Kane Scarrott said
it was “scare tactics’’.
“It’s holding people at ransom.
Either sign here shut up and go or
pay to get rid of your place.
“When they rang me, I told
them it was scare tactics.”

“ABSOLUTELY over the moon.”
That’s what Ellesmere College
board of trustees presiding
member Vanessa-Amy
Greenwood said about the
school’s redevelopment finally
getting under way next week.
The project had been
announced in 2019, but there
was uncertainty as to whether it
would go ahead.
Last May, the Ministry of
Education revealed unstable land
had caused the expected budget
of the redevelopment to go from
$30 million to $63 million.
It also said the project would
have to be done in stages, which
meant it wouldn’t be completed
until at least 2028.
Ellesmere College was also
waiting on final consent from
the council, which contributed to
further delays.
Greenwood said the first stage
of the redevelopment, storm
water enabling works, will begin
next Friday.
She said the school is thrilled
they’ve made it through the final
hoop to get the build under way.
“We’re absolutely over the
moon that it’s finally happening
and that our students are finally
going to get a school that is worthy
of them.”
The project is a redevelopment
of the entire school.
Once completed, it will
have new learning hubs, an
administration building and an
auditorium.
Greenwood said the gymnasium
will also be redone.
The final budget and end date
are still undecided, as it has to go

for an establishment board
for Rolleston South. When
appointed, the board will work
with the community to develop
the vision and values for the
school and determine how it
operates.

VAN CRASH LEAVES
TWO INJURED
One person was seriously
injured and another moderately
after a van rolled on Thursday.
Fire units from Lincoln and
Little River were called to
the accident on Christchurch
Akaroa Rd in Price Valley
at 10.30am. On arrival, one
person had already been
assisted out of the vehicle while
another remained trapped.

Bus closure prompts
meeting on user needs

A COMMUNITY meeting
will be held to discuss public
transport options for the wider
Southbridge area.
Enviro Ellesmere is hosting the
meeting in response to Environment
Canterbury axing the No 87
bus route between Southbridge
and Lincoln in June.
The meeting will be held at Leeston
Library at 6pm on August 8.
The intention is to identify
the community’s transportation
needs. Suggestions will then be
presented to ECan at a later date.
Enviro Ellesmere’s Jade Arnold
hopes the meeting will establish
just how necessary public transport
is for residents in the area.
“I’ve spoken to a lot of people, a
lot of workers that have said they
actually want an earlier bus and
then many workers want a later
bus. Many retired folk would like
to be able to use their gold card,
so they don’t really want to have
to go at 6.30am in the morning,”
she said.
Gold cards can only be used
after 9am.
In a previous statement, ECan
public transport general manager
Stewart Gibbon said they worked
closely with the community to
give the trial of the route every
opportunity for success.
ECan attributed the route’s
closure to lack of passengers.
Arnold hopes a meeting with
ECan at a later date will answer
outstanding questions from the
community.
“(Gibbon) says that he engaged
with the community or he gave
the community every chance, but
I really don’t see any evidence
of that. So my question to him
would be, what engagement did
you actually do? Who did you
talk to? Which groups?”
Ellesmere Ward councillor
Elizabeth Mundt is hoping to
attend the meeting.
She believes all public transport
options were not adequately
explored when trialling the 87
route.
“I feel that they (ECan) haven’t
gone about the whole process in
the right way.
“By first installing the buses
without a community decision
and the community input, and
then removing them again
without the community input.
“There is always a solution to
every problem in my opinion
and we just need to find the right
one that meets the targets for
everybody.”

Bach owner Don Brown, who
is Ngāi Tahu, went to Taumutu
and asked for iwi members to
be allowed to stay at
Greenpark Huts, which
led the rūnanga to hold
the vote.
Brown has a centuriesold
connection to the
area. He traces his
whakapapa back to
pre-Ngāi Tahu Ngati
Māmoe and Waitaha, iwi
which used the lake as
a valuable food source 400-500
years ago.
He has lived in his current
bach on-and-off for 30 years.
“I felt confident Taumutu
rūnanga were supportive of my
continued occupation,” he said.
In March, Brown told Selwyn
Times he would not be leaving
Don Brown
and said he was considering
taking legal action.
“My son and I are looking at
where to from here.
“We’re fishermen, we’re
not lawyers or have any legal
experience.’’
Scarrott said legal action
would follow if Ngāi Tahu
residents were able to stay
while others were evicted.
“There would definitely
be legal action,” Scarrott
said.
Scarrott was unaware
of the Taumutu vote until
told by Selwyn Times.
“I did hear a whisper
there was a vote but I did
not know it was only Ngāi
Tahu residents,” Scarrot said.
Another bach owner Ross
Wilson was unsure if he would
take legal action but said if Ngāi
Tahu granted the Taumutu
request, others probably would.
“It would open it right up. It’s
something I’d have to consider if
it was an option,” Wilson said.

Relief for residents as evictions on hold

KIRRILY FEA had tears in her
eyes when councillors voted to hit
pause on the Upper Selwyn Huts
eviction process.
Councillors unanimously voted
at their meeting last week to give
residents 10 more months to
argue their case to stay. They were
previously facing removal from
their homes by June 30, 2039,
with little consultation.
But residents fought back, saying
the initial council consultation
process was flawed – which
cost them more than $10,000 in
legal fees.
Fea has been living at the huts
since 2019 and thought it would
be her forever home.
She said the new approach is
the best outcome.
“It has been a huge relief, I had
tears in my eyes. This was the best
outcome we could have hoped for.
“We feel the council are really
wanting to collaborate with us
now and they accept this is a high
significance level that requires
full collaboration,” Fea told the
Selwyn Times after the meeting.
Councillors voted in favour
of six recommendations, which
included pausing the current
process and extending the
current deed of licence – due to
expire on September 30, 2024 –
to July 1, 2025, with the council
using the additional 10 months to

Fea said the whole process had
been very stressful.
“It affects your mental health
and it affects it permanently so
this stress will not leave me for
the rest of my life.
“Their (residents) mental health
has suffered. They have literally

been crying, people have not been
going to work because the stress
is too much.”
Legal pressure and more
than 200 queries and Official
Information Act requests from
residents to council have now
forced its hand.
Prior to the council vote, Fea
and the residents’ barrister Clare
Lenihan presented to councillors
laying out concerns which
included the future being finite
and proposed hut inspections.
“We note the finite decision
made back in March as well as
the inspection programme have
not been included in the scope for
this extended consultation.
“We believe all issues should be
included in this collaboration,”
Fea told councillors.
Whether the finite period
will be reconsidered was not
discussed, but council executive
director enabling services Tim
Harris said the inspection
programme was about ensuring
the safety of residents.
Harris said the consultation
will cover a range of issues
including the future timeline
for hut occupation, the potential
for a district-wide rate and
compensation for residents.
Lenihan said a draft report
conducted by Underground
Overground Archaeology said
the huts should be protected.
The residents have previously
tried to get the settlement
heritage listed but failed. Heritage
New Zealand has yet to consider
the application.

Not all in
favour of
new ward
structure

SEVERAL councillors are
concerned for the future of
the rural voice in a new ward
structure.
It comes as district councillors
approved a new eight-councillor
four-ward option, with no
community boards, to go out for
public consultation next week.
The decision was not
unanimous, with Springs Ward
councillor Debra Hasson,
Ellesmere Ward councillor
Elizabeth Mundt and Malvern
Ward councillors Bob Mugford
and Lydia Gliddon voting
against it.
Under the proposal, Ellesmere
and Malvern wards would drop
to one councillor from two,
while West Melton would join
the Springs
Ward, all to
balance the
number of
people each
councillor
represents to
plus or minus 10
per cent of the
population.
It was the
recommended option from
the representation review
Debra
Hasson
committee, which is made up
of councillors, the mayor, a
Malvern Community Board
representative, and a youth
council representative.
Mundt, Mugford, and Gliddon
were worried about what the
proposal would mean for their
wards.
Said Mundt: “I’m concerned
about the rural representation
with the changes because
obviously this is based solely on
population rather than distance
travelled.”
Mugford
called the
proposal “a bit
of an insult,”
saying if it was
going to work
they would
need support
from other
councillors.
Gliddon said the extra
Bob
Mugford
workload would be unbalanced.
Hasson voted against the
proposal after failing to get an
amendment passed. As part of
the consultation process, the
amendment would have asked
the public if they supported
community
boards in all
four wards
rather than
recommending
the
disestablishment
of the Malvern
Community
Board.
Prior to the
voting, Malvern community
Lydia
Gliddon
board member Calvin Payne and
chair Bruce Russell presented to
the councillors, asking them to
retain the board.
“We do not support either
of the current options in the
preliminary consultation as we
do not believe either provides
elected representation in Selwyn
District, in particular for our
rural wards,” Payne said.
He said the only way to keep
effective representation would be
to retain the board.
Meanwhile, Environment
Canterbury is proposing Selwyn
gets its own regional council
constituency. ECan voted 9-7 in
favour, with the proposal going
out to public consultation.
Currently, Selwyn is part of
Mid-Canterbury but Selwyn’s
population growth has pushed
it outside the population
requirements of plus or minus 10
per cent (plus 24.07 per cent).
If the proposal gets the green
light, Selwyn would get two
ECan councillors.
ECan is expected to consult on
the proposal next month.
The district council’s
consultation will run for five
weeks from August 8.

Push for public submissions on
new organics processing plant

SELWYN’S DEPUTY mayor
Malcolm Lyall wants people to
have a chance to oppose a major
organics processing plant.
Ecogas has lodged a resource
consent application with
the Christchurch
City Council and
Environment
Canterbury for its
organics processing
plant in Hornby, about
two kilometres from
Prebbleton, which will
replace the troubled
Bromley facility in mid-
2026.
The proposed plant would
be built on Aruhe Rd, a heavy
industrial-zoned area.
Because of the zoning, there
is a possibility only direct
neighbours of the plant will be
able to submit.
Both councils are currently
processing the application and
are expected to decide whether
LINCOLN University’s end-ofyear
Garden Party will make a
comeback after a battle to get its
special licence approved.
The event, which is run by the
Lincoln University Students’
Association and celebrates
the end of lectures, has had a
tumultuous few years.
It was cancelled in 2021 due to
concerns with Covid-19, while
last year’s attempt to rebrand it
as the ‘Lawn Party’ and exclude
Canterbury University students
lead to another cancellation due
to low ticket sales.
LUSA’s application for a
special licence had initially
been opposed by police, but that
was withdrawn after multiple
meetings with the association to
discuss police concerns.

Lyall said he would be
disappointed if it wasn’t.
Prebbleton Community
Association chair Jane Elms
agreed with Lyall.
“There is certainly a feeling
people want to have
their say, which I think
is important in the
process,” said Elms.
Lyall called on ECan
to learn from past
experiences. In 2020,
Waste Management
applied for resource
consent to operate
a hazardous waste
treatment and stabilisation plant
at Marshs Rd, with only people
with properties 500m from the
plant allowed to submit.
“We have 5000 people living
in this community and to not
notify it publicly would be very,
very disappointing, and I’d hope
that ECan learnt from the fiasco
that was last time,” said Lyall.
In the original alcohol
management plan, LUSA
requested a four-drink serve,
which means attendees could
order four drinks at a time when
at the bar.
It has been moderated to a
two-drink serve, a recommendation
by the Medical Officer of
Health.
The party will be held on October
18 on campus grounds.

Swing dancers contributed to a fun night at the
Ellesmere Big Band concert on Saturday. Fifty people
went along for a night of music from the ‘40s to ‘80s,
performed by the 18-member band. Band member
Alex Haywood said they were pleased with the
turnout. Swingtown Rebels, a swing dance group
from Christchurch, provided extra entertainment. “We
let them know that we were playing at Rolleston and
they came out and contributed to the evening very
well,” he said.

THE HORORĀTĀ Hall, an
integral part of the area since
1890, is returning to community
ownership.
Following discussions
between the Hororātā
Community Trust and the
council, the title of the hall and
adjacent land has officially been
transferred to the trust.
The transfer of ownership
means the trust will now bear
all costs related to the hall’s
operation and make all future
decisions for the facility.
Previously, the council
was responsible for the hall’s
ownership and covered all
repair, maintenance, and
operational costs.
The decision was confirmed
in the council’s Annual Plan
2022/23.
As per the Long-Term
Plan 2021/31, the council has
allocated $1 million in funding
(less legal costs incurred) to be
transferred to the trust.
Deputy mayor Malcolm Lyall
said he was enthusiastic about
transferring ownership of the
hall.
“It is great (the hall) will be
restored and nurtured and

become an even greater asset for
the local community.”
Trust chief executive officer
Cindy Driscoll said the group
was grateful for the work of the
council to allow the deal to take
place.
She said the historic hall now
had a bright future.
“Now is the time to not just
add to or renovate the Hororātā
Hall but reimagine and
repurpose it to stand the test of
time while honouring its history
and architectural heritage.
“While we plan for the next
12 months, it will be status quo.
The hall will be available for
hire and community use. We
will work with existing hall
users and welcome new groups
or businesses to be part of this
project,” Driscoll said.

Quilter sets sights on Houston ‘Olympics’

A ROLLESTON mum is
dreaming of a once-in-a-lifetime
trip to the United States after her
hand-made quilt was selected for
the Houston International Quilt
Festival.
Daena Schofield, who has
epilepsy and autism, was
delighted to find out her artwork
– Experiencing Epilepsy – had
been chosen for the juried
exhibition at the USA’s largest
quilt show in October.
“Houston is the absolute
bucket list event to get into.
Getting into Houston is like
getting into the Olympics,” she
said.
“I really didn’t think my
quilt would get selected, but I
decided to submit it anyway. It
was around 3am when I got the
email and I woke my husband up
saying, ‘I’m in! I’m in! I’m in!’”
The quilt is particularly special
to Schofield as she created it to
represent what she feels when
having an epileptic seizure.
“I was diagnosed with epilepsy
when I was five and in 2022, I
thought, ‘how can I show what
its like to have a seizure in a
quilt’,”she said.
“For me, it’s like my brain
is telling me the universe is
exploding. My brain just can’t
process it and I wanted to show

that in this quilt.”
Schofield used pinks and
purples to represent the
explosions she feels during a
seizure with a silhouette of a
woman’s head in profile and
metallic threads to portray brain
activity.
The piece has previously been
displayed in the Canterbury
Patchwork and Quilting
Guild Show where it was
awarded Best Art Quilt and Best
in Show before going on to win
Best Art Quilt at the 2023 Great
New Zealand Quilt Show in
Rotorua.
Now the quilt has arrived in
Houston, Texas, where it will be
showcased against the ‘best of
the best’ and its creator would
love to be there to see it.
Unfortunately, Schofield isn’t
able to self-fund such a trip,
but was encouraged to set up a
fundraiser by her friends in the
quilting community.
“Members of the quilting
community in New Zealand and
Australia – and even in America
– have been getting in touch and
telling me, ‘you need to be in
Houston, you need to be there to
stand next to your work’.
“But because I’m a disabled
artist, and I can’t work, it’s really
difficult,” Schofield said.
“We’re a one-income family.
It’s really, really hard, but I’m
desperate to get to Houston and
represent my work on the world
stage.”

Young Farmer loving life on the land
Charing Cross dairy
farmer George Dodson
was the winner of
the prestigious Young
Farmer of the Year title.

catches up with him
EARLY MORNING starts don’t
faze George Dodson.
Getting up before the sun rises
is part of the job and he finds it
relatively easy to get his head off
the pillow when the alarm rings.
The 22-year-old is secondin-charge
for owner operators
Andrew and Hayley Slater at their
430-cow farm on 113 hectares.
“The early starts aren’t too bad
and I’m pretty used to it now. I’m
not one of those people that needs
a helluva lot of sleep. I suppose if
you are one of those people who
needed that, it’s not well suited for
you, but I’ve just got used to it.”
As for the grind of double daily
milking, he’s at peace with that
too.
“You just sort of zone out and
daydream and listen to music with
a bit of singing and you’ll be right.
The more you focus the harder it
gets I suppose.”
Through the milking season
he’s up at 4am and out the door
getting the cows to the milkshed
with the cups on at 5am.
Milking, followed by the cleanup,
is usually finished by 7.30am
at the 36-bale rotary shed with
cup removers, auto drafting,
feeding and cow manager tags.
“It’s real good, especially if
we are mating as it’s essentially
a one-man operation. Then we
go for breakfast for an hour and
depending who’s on that day, we
might be shifting irrigation.
“We’ve got three Rotorainers
and a few sprinklers so shifting
them around is a few hours. Then
we’ve got a few odd jobs like
setting up breaks and doing the
effluent for an hour or so and then
it’s lunch,” he says.
In the afternoon, more jobs are
ticked off the list before the second
milking with cups on at 2.30pm
and out the shed by 4.40pm if they
are quick, and then it’s one last
check of the cows and irrigators.
BUSY: The working week is a blur for Charing Cross dairy farmer George Dodson who was
recently crowned Young Farmer of the Year.
Ten minutes later he’s back
home and – in theory – can put
his feet up.
The Slaters have been supportive
since he moved to the
high-performing operation just
over a year ago, both on and off
the farm.
Dodson had been managing
a larger farm and wanted to
connect with a farm owner who
was a good operator and got good
output out of his cows.
“Probably Andrew more than
anything [was the reason I came
here]. I was managing 550 cows so
slightly bigger in Southland, but
all my family and friends are up
here so I wanted to come back.
“He was probably the main
reason. I probably could have got
a managing job somewhere, but I
wanted to come work here and for
the opportunities that are going to
come in the future. ”
Usually a relief milker is
employed during the irrigation
season. Otherwise, the pair look
after the operation themselves,
with Hayley managing the calfraising
during this busy stage of
the season.
For someone so young, Dodson
has already built up a strong
resumé of dairying experience.
His latest role follows a stint last
season managing a larger farm of
about 550 cows under the Fortuna
Group in Southland’s Woodlands.
Before that he was on a dairy
farm on the shores of Lake
Ellesmere, near Lincoln, relief
milking initially as a 16-year-old
and progressing his way up from
herd manager to farm manager.
While he’s since gained dairying
qualifications, university was
bypassed.
“I just went straight out as I
don’t like sitting in a classroom or
at a computer. Dairying is definitely
very practical and it has lots
of variety. I do like the outdoors,
sometimes more than others.”
Dairying is in the blood.
His parents, Fred and Sarah
Dodson, were in an equity
partnership on a Southland farm
before they moved to Rolleston
when he was 11. His father is now
managing a Hororata farm.
Sisters Emma and Grace, one
studying teaching in Dunedin and
the other still at school, pitch in
with farm work in the holidays.
“I was brought up on a farm
until we moved into town when
we came here and I didn’t really
have much to do with farming
until I was 16 and was working on
the same farm near Lincoln.
“I did agriculture at school, but
never really thought it was going
to be the path for me, but sort of
ended up falling into it after high
school. It’s good diversity and I’ve
learned a lot of skills.”
Never one to sit still for long,
he will restart studies towards
a agribusiness management
diploma that were put on hold for
his Young Farmer title bid.
In the medium- to long-term,
Dodson’s goals are to stay with the
Slaters until the end of the 2024-
25 season and then he’s keen to go
into a sharemilking partnership
with them on another farm.
The arrangements have yet to
be sorted, but he might run the
sharemilking and put in some
equity into the partnership with
“room to grow”.
Failing that he would like to
progress to contract milking on a
600-800 cow farm.
Yet to invest in his own cows,
he’s put his money elsewhere to
get a good return on investment.
“There’s a bit in the bank. I’m
just sitting on my hands trying to
work out what’s my next move. ”
Mentors he taps into for advice
include the Slaters, his former
Lincoln employer Tony Dodunski
and his father.
They’ve all taken different paths
and this helps him to find his own
middle ground.
Further into the future is the
goal of owning his own farm.
“Hopefully I’d like to get a
family farm of some description
that can be passed down to the
generations and keep the passion
for farming going. ”

New parking restrictions will come into
place early August for the Rolleston
Town Cente, to support good access
and help businesses.
Hororātā Hall returns to community ownership
A new stage of life has been confirmed for the
historic Hororātā Hall.
The Council has transferred ownership of the hall

Keeping safe when driving on icy roads
Winter is here and along with chilly weather
and earlier nights, challenging driving conditions
are unfortunately part of the package. It is
important to plan ahead; stay alert; slow down;
and drop back.
When driving in winter, prepare for ice on the road.
Ice can be particularly hazardous in sheltered areas
of the road where it might not thaw during the day,
or after a flurry of snow when it may be thicker.
You may not see it. If you can’t avoid these areas,
go slow on the roads.
To increase your safety you can:
• Increase your following distance so you have
more time to react to other road users.
• Avoid braking suddenly or accelerating rapidly.
• Give your brake pedal a few gentle taps rather
than one hard push to avoid skidding.
• Carry snow chains and put them on your
vehicle when necessary.
• Check the weather before driving. If it
looks particularly bad, avoid driving.

Selwyn communities to have
their say on new proposed
representation model
The Council has approved a proposal to go
out for consultation to change the make-up
of the council and its wards to better reflect
the population.
The proposal largerly keeps the same ward
boundaries, but the number of councillors
would be reduced from 10 to eight, with the
Malvern and Ellesmere Wards moving to one
councillor, with three councillors each for the
Rolleston and Springs Wards. It also proposes
a model without Community Boards.
The proposal was agreed upon after extensive
research and consultation among Selwyn
communities and aims to ensure fair and
effective representation at the 2025 local
government elections.
A preliminary consultation held in April invited
the community to suggest new names for
the wards. Based on the feedback and in
conjunction with the Rūnaka, names reflecting
the area’s history and landmarks have been
proposed: Tawera Malvern Ward, Kā Mānia
Rolleston Ward, Te Waihora Ellesmere Ward,
and Kā Puna Springs Ward.
The proposal will be out for people’s feedback
from 8 August to 12 September 2024.

DARFIELD HAVE completed
a Coleman Shield campaign of
two halves by lifting the trophy
for the second time in the club’s
history.
The 25-14 win over Prebbleton
on Saturday at Kirwee Domain
sealed a turnaround from their
first four games of the campaign
– which they lost, before winning
their last three regular-season
games in a row to take the fourth
and final semi-final spot.
There, they upset previouslyunbeaten
Waihora away from
home before tipping up defending
champions Prebbleton in the
final.
Head coach Chris Lea said he
never stopped believing in his
side.
“There’s no lack of heart in the
boys. You’re playing a final every
week, so we knew we had to be
on for those five games. It was
in our own hands and the boys
did that and I was pretty proud
of how they worked over the last
five or six weeks.”
Lea said his side’s defence won
them the game.
“It was a typical final, it was
pretty tight, a bit of a dogfight.
First provincial match for Foster Park

THE ROLLESTON Rugby Club
is gearing up to host its first ever
provincial match at Foster Park.
Canterbury will play Otago in
a pre-season match on Friday at
2.05pm, before the NPC gets under
way the following Saturday.
But the match has already been
hit with complications.
When inspecting the field last
week, Canterbury Rugby officials
found Foster Park’s No 1 pitch in
poor condition and unfit to hold
the game. It has now been moved
to the No 2 field.
Rolleston president Nicky
Ruki said it was a disappointing

was) just a typical arm wrestle.”
He hailed one moment – with
the team leading 18-14 with five
minutes to play but defending
their own line – as key to victory.
“We’d led most of the game,”
said Lea.
“Then they were hot on attack,
but we ended up turning it over
and scoring at the other end.
“We got a couple of penalties
and kicked down there and
scored, so that turned the game.”
Darfield captain Harrison
Groundwater said the game-plan
was simple – keep Prebbleton in
their own half.
“We just wanted to play down
their end.
“We didn’t want to give away
penalties deep in our half so it
was just trying to stay down their
end, capitalise and take points
when we could.
“Otherwise they’re a pretty
good attacking team, we knew
that if they got down our end
they could turn it into points.”
Groundwater said this triumph
meant more than their 2022
win – their first in history.
“This one was a bit more special,
looking at where we’d come
outcome for the club.
“They (Canterbury Rugby)
have come and looked at the
field and, even though we haven’t
trained or played on it for about
five weeks, the rain has just absolutely
annihilated it.
“From our point of view, it’s
really disappointing that our
field is not up to scratch for the
game, so they have to move it to
2.”
Ruki said not having the match
on the No 1 field meant a worse
viewing experience, and more
logistics for the club. A generator
would probably be needed to
run scoreboards, while sponsors
would have to watch the game
from, qualifying fourth, then to
get that result just showed how
tight-knit as a group we are, playing
for each other and the community,
and we gave ourselves a
highlight on Saturday.”
Prebbleton did claim three
other titles on finals day, with
their division 2, division 3 and
colts teams winning their competitions.
It was their second-successive
colts title, but the women’s
team joined the men’s in failing
to defend the title they won
last year, going down 32-10 to
Springston.

TWINS LANCE and Kieran
Meikle are celebrating their
second Coleman Shield title
together for Darfield, playing a
big part in win.
Lance, a halfback, scored with
five minutes to go to stretch the
Ducks’ lead out beyond seven
points.
He said it was special for the
pair to go from junior rugby
to Coleman Shield titles.
“It was bloody epic, couldn’t
think of a better person to play
alongside than with your twin
brother, it’s pretty cool,” said
Lance.
The 28-year-olds were able to
celebrate together after Lance’s
try, with wing Kieran gripping
his brother’s jersey and screaming
into the crowd (pictured).
“I didn’t even know there was a
camera there,” said Kieran.
“Just the crowd, they were just
yelling and screaming and there
was a whole lot of bloody supporters.
It was just, yeah, I don’t
know, in the moment.”
The brothers were a part of the
Darfield team which won the
club’s first-ever Ellesmere title in
2022. Kieran said being able to
take their second trophy so soon
afterwards meant a lot.
“We lost a lot of finals over the
last 100 years and then won it in
‘22, (but I) never thought we’d
actually get our hands back on it,
to be fair.
“We’re a team of battlers and
I guess we just keep punching
above our weight, get the job
done.”
Wightman added to NZ team
Selwyn runner Cooper Wightman has been called
up to represent New Zealand at the junior world
championships in Peru. Wightman, 16, was a reserve
for the squad when it was named in May, but has been
added to the team to compete next month, running
in the 1500m. He recently medalled in both the 800m
and 1500m at the U18 Oceania Championships in Fiji
in June, winning silver in both.
Douglas holds own at Silverstone
Motor racing driver Jacob Douglas has made a solid start to his
GB3 championship career in his debut race weekend at Silverstone.
Competing at the iconic English racetrack, Douglas, from Lincoln,
finished 17th, 19th and 16th in his first three races for team Chris
Dittmann Racing. Fellow Cantabrian Louis Sharp took the lead in the
championship, with two second-place finishes across the weekend.
The next race weekend is at Doningon Park in England, from
September 7-8.

MY PRIDE AND JOY
This story is about a holiday “love
at first sight” encounter—not in the
traditional sense, but Chrissy fell hard for
a 1969 replica MG TA car while visiting
England.
It all started with a lunch outing and
a drive through Oxfordshire, England.
Chrissy couldn’t take her eyes off a
unique-looking car at Judds Garage,
Woodleys, Woodstock. After a test drive,
she decided that this was the car for her.
Despite numerous obstacles, navigating
red tape, dealing with unhelpful service,
and issues with removing it from the
docks, determined Chrissy managed to
bring the vehicle to New Zealand.
The replica is based on the MG TA,
the first model in the MG T-type series

of open two-seater sports cars produced
from 1936 to 1940. The MG TA was a
popular pre-war sports car known for
its famous radiator design, swept wings,
running boards, folding windscreen, and
large, foldable, accessible bonnet with
side curtains.
Since purchasing the car, Chrissy
has maintained it in its original 1969
condition. However, bringing it up to
New Zealand certification standards
required a lot of verification and
installing higher taillights, a new steering
rod, and seatbelt anchors. She has also
replaced the canopy due to yellowing
windows. After receiving numerous
referrals from other car owners, this work
was done by local experts Sue and Brian
from Advanced Upholstery in Darfield,
known for their outstanding reputation.
Chrissy’s partner has also used them for
his boat and camper home. Bridgestone
Rolleston’s fantastic service was also
appreciated when they came to her aid
when the car had tyre issues on the drive
to Advanced Upholstery. They were
surprised with the vehicle’s toolkit, which
included a quirky wooden tool to remove
unusually shaped nuts on the wheel.
The unique and sporty look of MG
TA makes it stand out. With a navy
blue paint job and orange wheel spokes,
the car is an eye-catcher. After a run to
Kaikoura, Chrissy left a store to find a
couple sitting in the MG. She was happy
to take their photo with them sitting in
it. Another car run to Akaroa saw a man
showing intense interest in the vehicle.
After Chrissy approached him and

chatted, she found out that he was from
England and that he also had one back
home.
Chrissy says the car drives like a
dream and is a top-notch performer. She
confirms she has no regrets about buying
the vehicle and has a list of people who
want to be first in line if she wants to sell
it. This stunning replica is used during
car rallies and to carry Chrissy in style
during Sunday outings to enjoy a quiet
drink and catch up with others.

Tiny SUV packed with pep and personality
The Ignis, along with the new
generation Jimny are the funky,
fun and affordable members of the
otherwise staid Suzuki NZ model
line-up.
They are smallest new SUVs
sold but have giant sized
personalities. Along with the
popular Swift hatch they are
driving the brand’s continuing
strong sales growth here. It seems
us Kiwis love Suzukis and our
loyalty to the brand is rock solid.
One of the main reasons they
are in this enviable position is
down to an appealing mini and
compact urban SUV range. In
today’s world of rising prices
they are affordable new vehicles
people want and are reliable and
cheap to run. This takes on even
greater importance with tougher
economic times ahead.
With a unique design and
trendy, yet slightly retro,
appearance, the Ignis made a
triumphant return in 2016 after
a long absence, having an almost
immediate and positive impact.
With its distinctive SUV looks
and roomy passenger cabin, as
well as sharp pricing, the Ignis
ticks a lot of boxes for those on a
limited new car budget.

It instantly gets runs on the
board with its cute front end,
chunky wheel arches and eye
catching angled roofline.
I like how the styling touches
pay homage to previous Suzuki
models from the mists of time.
These include the “C” pillar slits
from the 1970s Giugiaro-designed
Fronte coupe, while the clamshellshaped
bonnet and guard garnish
are a nod to the original 1988
Vitara SUV.
Plenty of smart thinking has
gone into the Ignis. A lot has been
applied to what has been a fairly
dramatic weight loss programme
for this model, lessening the
load on the engine and chassis,
laying the foundations for more
assured handling. Every 100kg
shed, equates to a 5-6 per cent
improvement in fuel efficiency.
Advances in high-tensile steel
manufacturing with fewer welds
and joins, all help the Ignis tip the
scales at a lean 820kg in manual
transmission form and 865kg in
the automatic.
The three-strong model line-up
leads off with the $22,990 GLX
manual, with a $1500 premium
for the automatic. The higher spec
LTD being reviewed here is only
available as an automatic and sells
for $26,500.
A 1.2-litre 4-cylinder, 16-valve
double overhead camshaft engine
is common across all three
models. This multi-point fuel
injected powerplant has variable
valve timing technology and
produces 66kW and 12Nm of
torque at 4400 rpm.
Dualjet engine technology
features twin fuel injectors for
greater fuel economy. Improved
thermal efficiency and lowfriction
technology reduce engine
emissions. It does this brilliantly,
with the manual producing just
107 grams per litre of CO2, and
the automatic slightly more at 114
grams per litre. These figures are
better than several hybrid models,
which cost considerably more
than the humble Ignis.
While these aren’t the
ingredients for fire-breathing
performance, the engine
has sufficient flexibility and
responsiveness to satisfy most
owners without sending their
pulses racing.
Acceleration is lively and the
motor shows far more tenacity
than its modest capacity would
suggest but at higher revs it does
become coarse and lumpy. In
terms of power and torque, the
motor has changed little from
its days in the mini sized 2008
Suzuki Splash. This was good for
69kW of maximum power.
Ratings out of 10: Performance 6; Handling 6; Build Quality
6; Comfort 5; Passenger and Load Space 7; Value for
money: 7; Safety – Not rated.
Overall points out of 10: 6.5
The automatic in the test car
proved smooth and efficient in
lower speed urban driving. At
open road pace it’s less agreeable,
proving slow to kick down under
hard acceleration when you need
that extra burst of power. While
the revs rise appreciably, along
with your hopes for more oomph,
these never materialise.
The 1.0-litre turbo in the
Suzuki Swift hatch would
transform the Ignis, and most
likely the price upwards, and this
would be detrimental to what
is after a vehicle for the costconscious
new vehicle buyer.
The cabin is modern, inviting
and offers a decent amount of
space for a diminutive hatch.
There is plenty of head and
legroom for front and rear
occupants, while good ground
clearance makes it easy to enter
and leave.
An elevated seating position
ensures great all-round visibility.
The LTD includes two individual
sliding and reclining rear seats.
The load area with the rear seats
in use is a handy 271-litres,
extending to 1104-litres with both
folded down.
For such a small car, this one
is big on safety equipment with
electronic stability programme
(ESP), brake assist, six airbags
and side impact beams. CVT
models have hill holding control
and shift lock. Pedestrian
protection is to the fore with extra
shock absorption built into the
bonnet, front wiper area, front
bumper and bonnet lip to reduce
collision impact. A decoupling
mechanism for brake and clutch
pedals, an ISOFIX child seat
restraint system and child seat
tether anchorages are standard.
The LTD is well appointed with
cruise control with speed limiter,
power steering, electric windows
and electrically adjustable door
mirrors. A computer displays
fuel consumption (instantaneous
and average), six-speaker audio
system, Bluetooth audiostreaming
and hands-free calling,
and 60:40 folding rear seats.
Other standard features worth
a mention, include keyless entry
with push button start, Apple
CarPlay, Android Auto and a
reversing camera.
Playful and surprisingly
composed road holding are
a good fit with the vehicle’s
effervescent personality. However,
being taller and narrower than
other cars in this class, body
lean enters the handling frame
sooner when nudging things
along through tight corners or
over undulating terrain. This
only becomes if you continue to
unreasonably push the vehicles
handling limits.
The steering is light and not
as direct as I prefer, but fine for
the around-town driving life
this car is designed for. Another
plus for urbanites is the vehicle’s
excellent turn-on-a-dime 4.7
metre turning circle, that makes
light work of U-turns in narrow
streets.

MILITARY EXERCISE
Range Activity
5th-9th August 2024
The general public is to be advised that a New
Zealand Army Exercise will be conducted at the
West Melton Rifle Range area over the period
5-9 August 2024.
The exercise will involve up to 70 personnel of
2/1 Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment from
Burnham Military Camp.
Training will involve soldiers conducting night time
range firing and a Pack March from West Melton
Rifle Range to Burnham Military Camp.
Activities will be conducted during normal range
operations during the week. A night shoot will be
conducted on the nights of 6 and 8 August and will
finish no later than 9:00pm.
Soldiers will then be conducting a Pack March on
foot back to Burnham Military Camp from 8.00am
until 12.00pm on 9 August 2024.
The New Zealand Army takes fire risk seriously and
will ensure fire mitigation is present.

POSITIONS VACANT – UNDERGROUND MINING CREWS
Snowy River Mine is currently expanding our mining crews and we
welcome applications for Underground Mining Crews to work
alongside our current crews.
Our Mining crews are multi skilled and trained to undertake a variety
of tasks including operating mobile equipment such as loaders,
trucks and IT’s. Our crews also undertake installation of ground
support, mine services and charging explosives to support our mine
development activities.
Mining crews work on an attractive 7on/7off rotating days and nights
roster and can benefit from bus transport to/from Greymouth, private
health insurance, and access to our Employee Assistance Program.
Experience in mining is not essential as full training will be provided.
Those with transferable skills such as working with heavy machinery
or in forestry or farming will be highly regarded as will any previous
mining experience in either hard rock or coal.
Satisfactory completion of a pre-employment medical including
drug and alcohol testing, and clean police clearance is part of the
recruitment process. Federation Mining has a zero tolerance for drugs
and alcohol and daily testing will be mandatory onsite. Federation
Mining is a smoke free workplace. A clean driving record and ability to
drive a manual vehicle is necessary for this role.
These roles are on a short term contract with a view to extend or
become permanent in the next stage of funding for Federation Mining.

A DARFIELD farmer has
spoken of watching a man leap into
the flooded Hawkins River to try and
save himself after a helicopter winch
rescue operation failed.
Rod May had taken his tractor to
the scene on Greendale Rd, to try and
reach the middle-aged man who had
been clinging to the branches of a tree
in the rising waters on Sunday night.
The man had driven into the
flooded river, escaped from his car
and ca led emergency services from
his ce lphone which he managed to
keep with him.
Ultimately, a second helicopter
winch operation plucked the man
to safety after he was swept downstream.
It was a happy ending to the
ordeal which had lasted more than
three hours. The rescue was among
several in Canterbury on Sunday in
flooded rivers.
May said he and his family had just
had dinner when a neighbour alerted
them. Arriving about 8.50pm, he saw
the floodwaters were too high for the
tractor, however, he used its lights for
i luminating the site where the man

four times by youth believes a
family group conference was a
waste of time.
The meeting involved one
of the teens, a 13-year-old,
his family, Oranga Tamariki,
police and four other victims,
including another dairy
owner.
Facilitated by Oranga
Tamariki, youth justice family
group conferences are
intended to help youth take
responsibility and leave them
with a plan for the future.
While the victims could
speak a the meeting, Sangeet
Mehta said the decision had
already been made as to what
would happen with the youth.

A BAR patron who won $1200
on the pokies may have been
targeted by thieves moments after
she co lected the money.
A group of men who were in
the bar a the same time are the
focus of police inquiries. It is
believed they watched her being
paid, and then quickly swooped.
The incident happened at The
Famous Grouse Hotel in Lincoln
two weeks ago.
After she was paid out a the
bar, the men who had been
si ting nearby went over and
congratulated her. While she was
distracted the money disappeared
from her handbag. She only
realised it was gone after she left
the hotel.
Police have taken CCTV
security camera footage from the
hotel which shows the men going
over to the woman and mobbing
her in a congratulatory way. The
footage also captures a hand from
one of the men going towards the
bag.
Police say they may have
identified one of the group but
aren’t saying anymore about
the incident. The Selwyn Times
understands the men are from
the Amberley area.

racing in New Zealand. The animal welfare group says
that New Zealand is one of only seven countries left
operating commercial-level greyhound racing. Most
recently the US states of Arkansas, Florida and Iowa a l
announced phase-outs of greyhound racing.

adequately address its animal welfare problems.

society. A recent survey carried out by an independent
research company on behalf of SPCA reports that
74% of New Zealanders would vote to ban greyhound

Winter’s here...
clear the gutters and
keep them clean
Before clearing the gutter of any debris, it’s
best to securely block off the tops of any
downpipes with a large rag or old towel.
This prevents any of the collected sludge
being washed down and potential causing
a blocking. Beginning at one end, carefully
scoop out any leaves and sludge (either
with a purpose made gutter scoop or small
plastic trowel) and deposit the debris in a
bucket. Work your way along the length
of each section of guttering, emptying the
bucket as necessary. Once the guttering
is clear of mess, remove the rag or towel
and sluice the gutter with clean water,
scrubbing (if necessary) with a stiff-bristled
brush.
Once you’re satisfied the inside of the
gutter is clear and clean, use a preparatory
house or paint wash (diluted with
warm water to the recommended ratio)
to carefully scrub the guttering and
downpipes with a brush, rinsing off any
soapy residue with clean water. For any
really stubborn or unsightly areas of
mould, consider using a preparatory moss
and mould killer. While up the ladder,
do a routine check on the condition of
the guttering, ensuring that water runs
away freely and there are no splits, gaps in
the joints or broken brackets along each
section. Check also along the edge of the
roof for any potential maintenance issues
as now is the time to address any signs of
rust or other damage.
BLOCKED DRAINPIPES
Should the water not flow freely along the
guttering and exit via the downpipe, it
may be there’s a blockage in the downpipe
that will need clearing. Begin by carefully
feeding a garden hose down the top of the
drainpipe until it stops; then turn it on
full. This may be enough to dislodge the
blockage. Failing that, consider using a
length of strong wire or a thin rod to shift
the compacted debris. For truly stubborn
blockages, it may be necessary to remove
the downpipe completely. Beginning at the
bottom of the pipe, unscrew each bracket
and carefully remove the downpipe (or
each section, as necessary) and free the
inside of any blockage with a piece of
garden stake (or strong bamboo). sluice the
pipe out with running water. In extreme
cases it may be necessary to use a water
blaster. Once unblocked, replace the pipe,
screwing back the brackets in reverse
order.
PREVENTION
Prevention is better than cure so consider
placing plastic netting or mesh over
guttering to act as a filter and stop leaves
and other large debris causing a problem.
There are also a number of other custommade
gutter products on the market
including brush-like ‘whiskers’ and other
‘gutter guards’. Remember, however,
that even with these gutter protectors
you’ll still need to check your guttering
system annually to ensure run-off flows
freely. Small particles of dust and dirt can
still accumulate underneath any gutter
protector causing a build-up of sludge, and
inhibiting water flow, both of which can
lead to potential damage. If in doubt, seek
advice from your building professional.
TOP TIPS
Instead of blocking downpipes with
a rag or towel, consider installing a
water diverter on each. This purpose
made device is simple to fit and readily
diverts debris from the downpipe by
way of a plastic flap. When not being
used, the flap is clicked the other way,
and water will flow normally through
the pipe and into the drain.

paint, or new wallpaper, can make all the
difference and can be done on a shoestring
budget without the need for calling in the

To really make the room work for you,
carefully consider storage options – fitted
wardrobes and units are a great way to
maximise on space, while shelves and
bookcases can be used to store and display
your favourite items.
However, your bedroom is the perfect
room to allow your personality to shine –
if you’ve always fancied hoping on a trend,
such as going big with maximalism, then
the bedroom is a great place to start.
You can do yourself a favour when it
comes to getting a decent night’s sleep
by investing in some heavy curtains or
blackout blinds.
Blackout blinds are especially handy
for shift workers, or during the summer
months when there’s more hours of
daylight – but can also benefit anyone who
enjoys a long lie in without sunlight or
light pollution ruining it.
On a similar note, the lighting you
choose for your bedroom plays a
crucial role in creating the right sort of
environment for sleeping.
A good tip for bedrooms is to ‘layer’ your
lighting. This means opting for a mix of
three sources of light: task, decorative, and
ambient.
As the name suggests, task is the light
you’d use when completing a task. For your
bedroom, this could be a bedside lamp you
use to read or light-up mirror on a dressing
table.
Decorative lighting can add some fun
details – think a glitzy chandelier, a feature
standing lamp or some unusual table lamps
for your bedside tables.
For ambient, or general lighting, consider
recessed lights, spotlights or a simple
pendant light. You can give your room a
quick and cheap update by swapping out a
pendant shade whenever you fancy.
Layering doesn’t just apply to lighting,
either.
You can make the space cosier and more
comfortable by mixing up fabrics and soft
furnishings. If your room has an arm chair,
load it up with comfy cushions and drape
a throw across it; if you have wooden or
tiled floors, a fluffy new rug can amp up
the cosy-vibes; while pillows, cushions and
comforters can be piled on the bed to sink
into at the end of a long day.
