BLACK BELT KEEPS
KIDS OFF THE STREET
• By Geoff Sloan
AN 85-YEAR-OLD is offering
karate lessons with a difference.
For 35 years, Aranui
grandmother Mary Patu has
been helping youngsters build
self confidence by teaching
them self-defence.
The Okinawa-Te Karate
Aranui club has grown to
around 80 students. Mary
charges them just $2 a class,
a fee that hasn’t changed
since the sensei started
teaching.
She said there’s a more
important reason behind her
work than money.
“The whole angle is to get the
kids off the street and doing
something.”
The 7th dan black belt said
all the money goes back into
the community-based dojo,
purpose-built by her husband
and sons behind her house on
Breezes Rd.
“We’ve done everything in
here, like mirrors, matting and
that, we’ve (paid for) it with
barbecues and different
things.”
Mary started taking part in
Okinawa te Karate classes when
she was 48, after getting bored
just watching her sons at their
weekly lessons.
“I didn’t have any training
whatsoever, and the first thing
I ever did was do karate. That
nearly killed me when I was
first doing it.”
COMPOSTING for a school
garden in the red zone has
stopped after residents
complained about rodents and
flies.
The site is run by Ko Mahi
Ko Ora, which works under
the umbrella of Nōku Te Ao
Charitable Trust, and Te Pā o
Rākaihautū school on McLean St,
Linwood.
Composting at the site began
three years ago, with the end goal
a vegetable garden for students.
The group is creating soil by
composting above ground, to
avoid breaching city council
restrictions on digging into redzone
land.
Duncan and Paula Rogers have
been living on McBratneys Rd,
Dallington, for seven years.
The compost site is about a
block away from their home.
Duncan said issues began in the
area last summer.
“We had the worst infestation of
flies I’ve ever seen in my life. And
now I’ve already rid our garage
of a whole family of mice, which
we’ve never had before.”
Duncan also said he had seen
rats on his property and around
the area.
He believes the problems link
back to the compost site.
Avon Park to battle it out with the best
LINE UP: Stewart Reed, Dean Mooney (skip) and Mark
Coughlan will represent Avon Park at the New Zealand
Champion of Champions competition in Auckland.
• By Sam Coughlan
AVON PARK will get a second
chance of national honours when
they contest the New Zealand
Champion of Champions bowls
competition in Auckland this
weekend.
Dean Mooney, Stewart Reed
and Mark Coughlan won the
Canterbury competition in April
to qualify – only the second time
Avon Park has had a team at a
national competition.
Mooney, who is also club
president, competed alongside
Reed in 2021 in the New Zealand
men’s pairs in Dunedin.
He said it was a big deal for
Avon Park to make another
champion of champions competition.
“Canterbury is probably
consistently one of the strongest
regions in New Zealand, as far
as the quality of players that we
have here goes.
“I guess the privilege we have
is we are playing our interclub in
competitions against some of the
best players in the country.
“It’s a big deal to us that we
can still compete at that kind of
level.”
The Avon Park Bowling Club
was formed after the earthquakes,
when Burwood Park was
forced to merge with Dallington
due to their facilities being rendered
unplayable.
Mooney said the area had done
it tough for quite a long time.
“But we’re still trying to ply
our trade, and run our little
bowling club.”
He hopes some success this
weekend might raise the club’s
profile and convince more
people in the area to give bowls
a go.
“We’re hoping that results like
these do gather a bit of exposure
and, you know, we’re certainly
going there with the intent to
make it through as far as we
can.”
The tournament will be played
indoors at the Royal Oak Bowls
club in New Lynn, Auckland –
and with no indoor venues in
Christchurch, Mooney said it
CALM HAND: Mark Coughlan during the Canterbury
competition in April.
would add an element of uncertainty
for the team.
“It was certainly a big learning
experience for us three years
ago when we played in Dunedin.
For myself, that was the first
time I’d ever played on carpet
before.”
Mooney said playing on carpet
is completely different to playing
on grass.
“Generally the carpet is laid
on a concrete pad, and the
temperature of that concrete
really determines the speed at
which a green plays.
“In Christchurch, our greens
run traditionally, probably the
quickest in the world, and the
margins you’re playing with are
very fine.
“As the greens slow down,
then the resistance to a bowl is
increased and it means that you
tend to traditionally get a lot
less turn, so you’re adapting to
effectively a very different type
of surface and a different type of
game.”
Avon Park’s first match
is against Te Karaka, near
Gisborne, at 11am on Friday.
NOT HAPPY: McBratneys Rd
resident Duncan Rogers says
he’s been dealing with fly
and rodent problems due to
the red zone compost site.
keep teaching for as long as she can.
Best part of teaching
seeing students grow
• From page 1
Mary excelled in the style so
much she was later invited to
attend a three-week training
camp at the club’s United States
headquarters.
It was there Shihan, the club’s
master instructor, encouraged
her to start her own karate dojo
at home.
She said karate teaches self
discipline.
“It improves their schoolwork,
it improves everything. It builds
up that confidence. You see
some kids come in here and
they’re shy and don’t know what
to do. And then after a while,
you just see it slowly developing.
And that’s the best part of being
a teacher, is watching them
grow.”
Mary said the students are
part of her family. It wasn’t
uncommon for former students
to return with their kids, eager
to learn the martial art.
And despite her age, she’s
aiming to continue running the
community karate classes for as
long as she’s able or “until I kick
the bucket”.
Resolving compost
problems a priority
• From page 1
Compost site worker Keith
Murphy was shocked to hear
about the issues two weeks ago.
Murphy said composting at
the site was immediately stopped
and won’t continue until a
community meeting has been
held.
“We’re going to try and make
everyone as happy as possible.
“We’re all volunteers there, and
we’re trying to teach our kids
about healthy living, growing
healthy food.”
Nokū Te Ao Charitable Trust
chair Rangimarie Parata Takurua
said the city council alerted them
to concerns regarding the project
on July 10, but they were resolved
by July 17.
“This was a positive learning
experience for us. Like any
committed organisation, we are
always looking to refine and
improve our work.”
Since composting stopped,
Duncan has not noticed any
issues with infestations.
Murphy wished he was aware
of these issues sooner, as he
would’ve done something to
resolve them.
“It doesn’t feel good at all. We’ll
just have to work past it.”
He is hopeful a positive result
will come out of discussing and
resolving the issues with the
community.
Artists gear up for annual showcase
THE SUMNER ART Society
will hold its annual exhibition at
the weekend.
Previously held at the Redcliffs
Bowling Club, the exhibition is
being held at the Mt Pleasant
Yacht Club this year.
It overlooks the Estuary and is
where many art society members
meet each Wednesday morning
to work on their art, enjoy the
company of fellow artists and
share creative ideas.
Established in 1959, the Sumner
Art Society has about 60
members. Several have been busy
preparing for the exhibition.
Among them is Sharon
Soderberg-White, who uses
acrylic fluid pouring to produce
hand-embellished works, and
has donated one of her paintings
as a raffle prize.
Exhibition organiser Kilmeny
Keyse’s landscapes and figurative
works also feature.
Other exhibitors include Maxine
Burney, who has a studio
at the Arts Centre, and awardwinning
artist Geri Parawa, who
works in ink.
Suzanne Roberts’ quirky figurative
works will be on display,
as will Barry Mattingley’s semiimpressionist
acrylic paintings.
Pastels are the favoured medium
of portraitist Rose Croft, while
Robyn Cassidy draws animals in
coloured pencils. Rae Manson
prefers acrylics and her subjects
often have a coastal theme.
FLAIR: Artists exhibiting at the Sumner Art Show include Daphne Rolston (top left) and Kilmeny Keyse.
Exhibitors also include watercolourist
Sandra Palmer, pet
portrait artist Chris Threadwell
and miniaturist Deanna Smith.
Potter Lisbeth Hansen will
also be there.
The exhibition opens on Friday,
5.30-7.30pm, and continues
Saturday and Sunday, 10am-
5pm. Entry is free.
Artworks can be purchased
and taken home on the day.
Anyone interested in joining
the art society is invited to speak
to the artists.
The exhibition is sponsored
by Ray White Prier Manson Real
Estate Ferrymead.
Also on display are works by Elaine McDonald (left), Rae Manson and Sandra Palmer.
IT'S YOUR
LITTLE LOCAL
IN THE HEART OF
LINWOOD VILLAGE
Whether you're meeting mates
for a catch up over drinks or
after somewhere to take the
family for a delicious meal,
Bridie's Bar and Bistro on
Stanmore Road is the perfect
spot.
The Irish themed pub has been
a mainstay in the local
community for over ten years
Friendly staff and regular
entertainment coupled with
amazing family friendly food
and great drinks specials has
made Bridie's a popular
destination with patrons across
the city.
MEET THE CHEF...
Recently appointed, Germanborn
Chef Christoph (Chris)
Locker took over Bridie's Bistro
at the end of April.
"We have a great team at
Bridie's. It's good to be here,"
said Chris.
Before joining Bridie's, Chris
was based in Central Otago
chefng at a popular gastropub.
Prior to this he was living in
Korea where he was
restauranteur of The Peppercorn
Bistro in Seoul.
"At The Peppercorn we offered
European home cooking fused
with Korean," said Chris.
Currently working on a new
season menu, Chris says he
intends to retain some of the
traditional favourites and
introduce some of his signature
German/European and Asian
dishes.
Chris stresses that fresh
produce and quality ingredients
are essential to great food.
"Bridie's is associated with
some of the best local suppliers."
Grass fed Canterbury meat.
Beckenham Butchery
Cumberland Sausages & Deli
goods. Fresh sour dough breads
by the Hand to Hearth Artisan
Bread Company. Vivace beans
for their expertly extracted
barista crafted coffees.
Despite only taking over the
kitchen a couple of months ago,
Chris has already released a new
breakfast menu and updated the
lunch/dinner menu with some
tantilising new dishes as well as
adding a fresh spin on some of
Bridie's tried and true
favourites.
The breafast menu is available
daily until 1pm, however the
mains menu is available all day,
everyday from opening.
Let's not forget the kids.
Bridie's offers family-friendly
dining and the kid's menu has
many choices with something to
satisfy the fussiest eater.
Anniversaries, Birthdays,
Family gatherings, Work Do's.
Bridie's can cater to any event
or function at any budget. They
can provide set menus, platters,
and group catering. Enquire
today about hosting your special
event.
Food allergy? Let the staff
know. Many of Bridie's meals
